My weather predictions have been a bit wide of the mark to say the least over the last couple of editions, but I’m glad to say that summer did finally embrace us with its presence. Who’d have thought we’d ever see temperatures reach 39 degrees in this country and then a week later experience rain of biblical proportions?

Some people might justifiably say that us Brits are not happy unless we’re moaning about the weather. They could be right, but that’s our perogative. It’s either too cold and rainy or too hot and muggy but I’m actually quite pleased the temperatures have dropped to more reasonable levels. We’re just not equipped to deal with these extreme weather conditions.

Bradley Wiggins: An Evening With Join Britain’s most decorated Olympian Sir Bradley Wiggins as he visits Lincoln’s Engine Shed on Friday, September 06 in the first leg of a theatre tour showing throughout the UK with his insightful and at times hilarious live show.

‘Bradley Wiggins: An Evening With’ provides a rare opportunity for fans to see the five-time Olympic Gold medallist and Tour De France winner share exclusive tales, prized memorabilia and career highlights in a unique and intimate live setting. In November last year Wiggins released his latest book Icons (published by HarperCollins) taking readers on an extraordinarily intimate journey through his time in sport that made him a legend.

Everything you need to know about microblading

Microblading eyebrows is a form of permanent makeup that creates natural, beautiful eyebrows with a handheld microblade. It’s perfect for people who have over-plucked or those who want to define, darken or reshape their eyebrows.

Microblading originated in Asia over 25 years ago and has gone by many names: eyebrow embroidery, feather touch, microstroking and even “the Japanese Method.” By 2015, microblading became popular in the United States.

Technically, microblading is a form of eyebrow tattooing.

But unlike traditional tattooing, which uses a machine, microblading artists apply each hairstroke with a handheld microblade. This produces a very fine line that resembles real hair. Each individual hairstroke is hand drawn by the artist and blended in with the client’s existing eyebrow hair. With a strong artist at the helm, the results can be very lifelike and difficult to distinguish with real hair. The hair strokes are far more natural and finer than any tattoo and there is no electrical gadget that permeates deep in this technique.

At the initial consultation process a microblading artist will discuss the desired shape and colour of your eyebrows to match your face shape and skin tones. Eyebrows are drawn on with a waterproof pencil, so the artist and client can agree on the look.

As with the permanent makeup treatment the area will look 2030% darker than the colour you have chosen in consultation, but this will fade within 3-4 days to reveal your chosen colour. The treatment generally takes around 1-2 hours and will leave you with highly defined, ultra-realistic looking brows.

The second appointment is a touch up at least 30 days after the first session. This allows enough time for the ink in the epidermis to naturally slough off, and the colour to settle into your skin. In the touch up appointment, the artist can see how your skin has received the ink and make any necessary corrections.

Sometimes a client’s skin undertones may have unexpected effects on the ink’s colour, and the artist may need to add colour to adjust. These kind of corrections are normal with any microblading artist and an essential part of the process, as everyone’s skin is different and receives ink differently.

You will also be required to complete a medical consent form and carry out a patch test to ensure you have no reactions to the pigment or numbing cream applied.

Pigments are then implanted into the channels created by the microblades in the dermal layer of the skin. The sensation is similar to a little scratch but you should not feel any discomfort.

Your brows will eventually fade away if you don’t continue with top ups every 18 months or so. There is no scaring or discolouration with the pigments used, so you wouldn’t know if you left them to fade out.

Bigger fines for drivers that let cars idle while parked

Motoring

Drivers face significantly higher fines for letting their engines idle while parked in air pollution crackdown.

Motorists that let their engines idle while parked might face larger fines in a bid to improve air quality in the UK, the Department for Transport warned. It argued that an idling car produces enough exhaust emissions to fill one-hundred and fifty balloons per minute – although clearly there is a lot of variation.

The Department also emphasised that emissions contain pollutants such as cyanide, NOx (nitrogen oxide), and PM2.5 (particulate matter). These substances cause health issues that shorten lives such as heart attacks, lung disease, strokes, plus various cancers.

Chris Grayling, Transport Secretary, said: “We are determined to crack down on drivers who pollute our communities by leaving their engines running – particularly outside school gates where our children are breathing in the toxic air. Putting a stop to idling is an easy way to drive down dangerously high levels of pollution”.

Highway Code Rule 123 explains how motorists are expected to behave. It says: ‘Generally if the vehicle is stationary and is likely to remain so for more than a couple of minutes, you should apply the parking brake and switch off the engine to reduce emissions and noise pollution.’ However, there are some exceptions.

‘It is permissible to leave the engine running if the vehicle is stationary in traffic or for diagnosing faults’, the rule confirms.

The Road Traffic (Vehicle Emissions) Regulations 2002 already enable councils to fine motorists that let engines idle. Wardens She further confirmed that explanation rather than punishment is often enough to change behaviour. Once drivers know the damage idling causes most are happy to switch their engines off, she revealed. Many then ‘think twice’ before they idle again.

“Fines should be a last resort”, she suggested. “We prefer to ask nicely”.

The Department for Transport plans to launch a public consultation to see whether there is support for increasing the fine for motorists that idle while parked.

Public consultation likely to take place toward the end of summer 2019. All interested parties will have a chance to comment.

Long-term foster carers welcome a child or young person into their home and will care for them for the rest of their childhood.

This type of care gives a child or young person the stability of living in one family home, as well as a sense of belonging. With consistent routine, love and understanding, they can begin to flourish and be better prepared for adulthood.

Being a foster carer can be a challenging role, but it is also hugely rewarding. Many foster carers say that by far the biggest reward for them is watching the children in their care develop and flourish, knowing they had a big part to play in that.

Get your boots on for the fifth South Lincolnshire Walking Festival Heritage Lincolnshire, a charity based in Heckington, is urging anyone who enjoys walking to discover the hidden gems and varied landscape of south Lincolnshire in the fifth South Lincolnshire Walking Festival .

The walking festival will take place between 28th September and 25th October this year and will feature guided walks in North and South Kesteven, Boston and South Holland.

There are 59 guided walks led by organisations such as the Ramblers, Walking for Health, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, RSPB, CurlyDog Walking and Adventures, Ales and Trails UK plus many more.

From the Lincoln Edge in the west to the Fenlands of the east South Lincolnshire has an extremely varied landscape that has witnessed Bronze Age burials, Iron Age mints, roman forts, the Knights Templar, castles and abbeys.

But the festival isn’t only for history lovers. Whether you want to roam with Ramblers, have an adventure with your kids, get snapping on a photography foray or take you pooch out for a guided ‘walkies’, there’s something for everyone.

“Our pilot festival in 2015 attracted over 1,400 walkers, including 200 children and young people and last year over 2,000 walkers enjoyed the delights of the Lincolnshire countryside by taking part in our walks, which shows that there’s a real need in this part of the county. We greatly encourage families to get involved in the festival and we have 31 Family Friendly Walks to explore this year. The walks will take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and the official launch event will take place on 28th September at at one of Lincolnshire’s hidden gems, Grantham House. This National Trust Property has never been open to the public before and will be showcasing exclusive guided tours of the house and the gardens.

There’s lots to see and do on launch day including a treasure hunt to explore and two guided walks, between 4 and 6 miles for walkers to enjoy. Refreshments and toilet facilities are available on-site as well as stalls from selected partners.

This month Simon Ruddlesdin visits an old favourite in his quest to find Lincolnshire’s best bangers in ‘Rate My Sausage’ with a trip Manor Farm Butchers in Leasingham, just outside of his old stomping ground of Sleaford.

We reviewed some Lincolnshire sausages from Manor Farm in 2016 and were interested to see if standards had been maintained. I have been shopping regularly at this farm shop ever since, to me it means guaranteed high quality produce, be it veg, dairy, meat, you name it.

A traditional Breakfast Sausage has a light flavour that should not dominate the other items on the plate – it should act as supporting actor and not a self-proclaimed spotlight attracting star. A Brian Murphy instead of a Brian Blessed. This is not to say that they should taste bland, they certainly should not, ideally the breakfast sausage will contain delicately seasoned meat that should still please the taste buds. How will Manor Farm’s version rate? Read on, sausage fans...

Flavour: Warm and rich flavours with no over-powering individual ingredient. Just as any good breakfast sausage should be – the sidekick to the other superhero ingredients. The back-up to some special bacon. If you are looking for a powerfully flavoured banger as the centre-piece for your meal then these sausages are not the ones you seek.

Texture: Firm and resistant to the eating irons, quite fine filling which sticks together like a bunch of missionaries trekking up the Amazon. I prefer a much coarser filling in a sausage but in this case it suits the bijou size of each link. If you could magically enlarge these bangers to the size of a regular sausage the filling would be lumpier, and more to our peculiar taste. Nowt wrong with the texture in these snorkers!

Cheers Value For Money: £3.99 for 12 sausages weighing 466 grams. This works out as £8.56 per kg and 33p per banger. The label states “Minimum 445 grams” and I am pretty sure that every pack contains more than that. We rate this as good value for money.

And Finally, Esther: A decent breakfast sausage. Would play a perfect foil to some high quality black pudding. Or maybe kidneys. Or beef bacon.

Blackberry Ripple Ice-cream

Recipe

When I went foraging for brambles around our beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds countryside, it was a balmy late summer’s evening. Ice Cream, I thought, would be a perfect use for my brambles. However, such are the joys of the British summertime, that as I write, it hasn’t stopped raining all day and feels decidedly autumnal.

Despite it not being ice cream weather today, this recipe makes tasty use of the yearly free bounty in our hedgerows. So, I do hope that you will embrace this seasonal gem, whether we’re melting in a heat wave or digging out the wellies.

My tasty Blackberry Ripple Ice Cream is inspired by a recipe featured in a 1960s bestselling Hamlyn Cookbook, edited and compiled by a very young Mary Berry. I did a talk a couple of years ago in Boston and this book was part of my display.

One of the ladys present was overjoyed to be reunited with the ice cream recipe within. She had lost it some years ago and it was her daughters’ favourite when growing up. Said daughter was about to celebrate her 50th birthday and her mum was delighted to be able to make this childhood favourite for her as a surprise.

I love sharing my collection of books with community groups and this is a lovely example of just how powerful food memories can be and the importance of preserving these old recipes and cookbooks.

This ice cream is far quicker and easier to make than a custard based ice cream and the inclusion of condensed milk avoids the need for churning or any special equipment.

It is quite rich, so you don’t need a very big portion and I find it is best served sandwiched between wafers (as shown) or on a cone, it does need something with a bit of texture with it.

It melts very quickly, therefore remove it from the freezer and serve it and most importantly eat it as quickly as possible. You can adapt this recipe to use whatever soft fruit is in season or needs using up, just adjust the amount of sweetness needed and flavour of jam accordingly.

Ingredients • 300g blackberries • 4 heaped tbsp blackberry jam (or any flavour compatible jam of your choice) • 600ml double cream • 397g tin condensed milk

Method Blitz blackberries and jam in a blender/liquidiser and sieve into a bowl. Whisk the double cream and condensed milk together until stiff peaks form.

Fold the sieved puree through the cream mixture to give a ripple effect. Then pour into a freezer proof container with a lid. Freeze until firm.

Serve sandwiched in wafers or scooped onto a cone.

Whisky of the month: Old Pulteney single malt whisky

We’re back to mainland Scotland this month, with a visit to the Old Pulteney Distillery at Wick on the far north east coast.

Until recently, it was the most northerly distillery on the British mainland, but when another one was built at Thurso a few miles further north and west, it lost that accolade.

Unusually for a Scottish distillery, it is named not for its location, but for the patron of its location’s founder. The port was built as a model village from 1800 – 1820 by the famous Scottish civil engineer Thomas Telford and named Pultneytown after Sir William Pulteney, Director of the British Fisheries Society. Wick was then the largest herring port in the world, so it was a logical step to build a distillery there in 1826. So remote was it that there was no road; all the raw materials had to come in and finished product go out by sea. It was said that barrels of silver (herring) and gold (whisky) flowed out of Wick.

The maturation sheds are right down by the sea and the finished whisky reflects that, being known as The Maritime Malt. Because wooden barrels are porous, they breathe. Most people know about the Angels’ Share, the percentage of spirit that evaporates over time, but the process is two-way; as spirit gets out, air gets in and the characteristics of that air will affect the taste of the whisky. Hence fresh sea air will give the spirit a briny, slightly salty flavour.

Old Pulteney produce a wide range of expressions, including occasional special releases and a number for travel retail only.

The core range consists of the slightly smoky Huddart with no age statement and the 15, 18 and recently released 25 year old, not peaty and all quite briny. The entry level in this range is the 12 year old. It is matured wholly in American oak ex-Bourbon casks and comes out deep amber in colour with a slight pinkish

Above: Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Below: Old Pulteney Distillery at Wick. copper hue. The nose is intense and fruity with a distinct whiff of sea air. The mouth is medium bodied with notes of honey and cream, faintly salty and spicy. The finish is sweet and longlasting.

Frankly, there’s not a lot to do in Wick itself, but it’s a nice place to use as a base. The coastline is lovely and John O’Groats is just up the road. However, the distillery tour is well worth the trip on its own. Like many tours, various options are available

depending on time and budget, but included in the more indepth visits is the opportunity to bottle, seal and label your own single malt straight from the cask. That is a wonderful souvenir to take away from a fascinating visit.

Carols Travel 18 years creating personal travel packages for a grateful clientele Over 18 years ago, founder Rodney Dodson was working, driving for another company taking Calais Shoppers over the water. Carol was a passenger and started talking to Rodney about her love of travelling.

Bondage to Liberation brings together iconic pieces of footwear and clothing by designer Vivienne Westwood (right) from the private collection of Lee Price, and ‘The Sex Pistols Mural’ by radical artist and activist Jamie Reid.

The work of Westwood and Reid epitomises a key moment in British cultural history; the 1970s punk movement. Westwood opened her first boutique SEX in 1974 with Malcolm Mclaren and later renamed the store Seditionaries in 1976. Around the same time Jamie Reid was protesting social injustices with his now signature ransom note collages.

The pair became infamous for the creation of the punk and new wave aesthetic when the Sex Pistols started wearing many of the items from Seditionaries and commissioned Reid to create artwork for their records, such as ‘Nevermind the Bollocks’ and ‘God Save the Queen’.

Set against the backdrop of Lincoln Castle’s Victorian Prison and the Magna Carta Vault, the exhibition includes pieces from

the 1970s onwards and celebrates the pairs’ legacy of nonconformity throughout the decades.

Blue sky thinking – An indoor bowling revolution

In an all out challenge to tradition, the Lincoln and District Indoor Bowling Club is hoping to attract lots more members through it’s doors by offering a thoroughly modern twist to their already world class indoor bowls facility.

Situated on Hall Drive, at the rear of Boultham Park (LN6 7SW) and including a bar and council rated five Star restaurant, the club has stood since 1971, offering a social facility to the people of the Boultham area as well as promoting indoor flat green bowls for all ages, at whatever level suits best.

The club can boast national and international champions and even a former World Indoor Singles Champion in Billy Jackson who took the coveted crown at Potters in front of thousands on TV a decade ago.

Now, as a revolutionary statement, designed to herald the start of another 50 years, the club has taken the bold step of installing a blue bowling surface to replace the traditional grass inspired green carpet. The bowling surface has been renewed this year after 22 years of loyal service and the new colour is causing a bit of a stir with some of the club’s elders who are finding it hard to take in.

The idea coincides with the TV portable rink, the surface, on which local hero Jackson took the World crown in 2009. “It’s a fact that when people switch on the TV in January to watch the World Championships on the BBC, they see matches being played on a blue carpet” says General Manager Danny Brown who has overseen several key changes at the club since his appointment back in 2006.

“We have a very loyal but inevitably ageing membership. I’ve been playing over 40 years myself and a lot of the people I played bowls with when I started were all middle aged and ultra competitive” says Danny. “Some of those are still going strong, now well into their 70s and 80s, but the club needs to look forward and try and attract new members who can sustain it well into the future”.

The club can still boast 1150 members which already makes it one of the largest in the UK. 900 of those are bowlers with around 250 taking advantage of the social side which includes Bingo on a Wednesday and Saturday night and full use of the facilities other than the bowls.

Contrary to it’s stereotypical image, indoor bowls at the highest competitive level is a young persons game, but it’s also a sport that older generations can play on equal terms and one that caters for disabled players.

At the Lincoln club, families play together and there are leagues, competitions and social bowling activities at whatever level players wish to aim for.

The weekend friendly match scene is particularly popular for people who want to enjoy the social side of the game. The club subsidised away matches take members to other clubs, often involving a bus trip and a two hour game of bowls followed by a two course meal – all for the sum of just £10 per person. Little wonder it’s well supported.

The club is hosting an open day on Saturday, September 14 (09:30 - 16:00) where it hopes to attract more newcomers to the game. “We’re also trialling a new ‘club facilitator’ (or ‘buddy’) role where established club members take the new starters under their wing and make sure they play a game that’s rights for them” said Danny.

What’s more, anyone who joins on or after the open day will be eligible for the club’s free membership promotion which gives new starters all the club membership benefits until the end of the calendar year.

There’s virtually no restrictions. The facility can be enjoyed by young or old, male or female, disabled (bowling facilities are available for wheelchair users) or able bodied. So why not pay the club a visit and see for yourself?... you won’t go home feeling blue!
