Welcome Contents

Welcome to August’s edition of Lincs Scene. Those of you who can recall my notes from last month will remember my foolish prediction of a heatwave. What followed was the most consistent rainfall we have experienced in years! Anyway, have I learned from my error? Nah!... Summer is definitely here now we are finally experiencing some temperatures to rival the Mediterranean. Our diary date section is rammed with a great selection of events to compliment the sunny season including the 152nd Heckington Show (the largest village show in England), the Conningsby and Tattershall Beer Festival, Lincoln 40s Weekend and Outdoor Theatre’s production of Alice in Wonderland at Lincoln Castle. I really hope that my sunny predictions don’t anger the weather gods this time! Simon Ruddlesdin returns to an old favourite, Odlings of Navenby to source Lincolnshire’s finest bangers in ‘Rate My Sausage’, whisky expert Nick Ridout is back to share with us his choice of whisky of the month in ‘Distilled’ and we visit Harbour Lights’ floating restaurant at Burton Waters in our ‘Table For Two’ review. We are offering a pair of tickets to see Doves supported by Idlewood at Zebedee’s Yard in Hull and another competition to win a pair of tickets to see Steve Harley’s Acoustic Trio play Louth Town Hall. Thank you for reading and if you want to call us, please note the new telephone number below.

Doves plus Idlewild set to perform at Zebedee’s Yard, Hull

Competition

Doves and Idlewild announce Summer show at Hull’s – Zebedee’s Yard on Thursday 22nd August 2019. One of British music’s rarest treasures, Doves’ reputation as a committed and consistent albums band is gilded by timeless singles including There Goes The Fear, Pounding and Black And White Town. The Manchester band’s four albums to date, the Mercury Prizenominated brace of Lost Souls and The Last Broadcast, followed by Some Cities and Kingdom Of Rust stand as monuments of refined song writing craft.

Above: Manchester’s Doves. Below: Edinburgh’s Idlewild.

Each recalls the band’s broad span of musical reference points, from the glinting riches of golden age soul and gritty garage to the woody rhythms of folk. Beyond their dancefloor-friendly singles, Doves’ universe moved around emotive soundscapes and gently sparkling love letters. Demand for their sell-out live performances saw them routinely headlining festival stages, from repeated Glastonbury appearances to 2003’s Teenage Cancer Trust concerts and the BBC Electric Proms.

Doves promise a superb night of entertainment. Be sure to get your tickets for a perfect Summer’s evening, a gig not to be missed.

Doves stepped off stage in 2010 and Jimi Goodwin, Andy and Jez Williams went their separate ways for an indefinite period. Yet the lines between them remained connected and their threedecade long friendship persisted as the hiatus drew on. In the absence of a plan, the next chapter began to fall into place and in 2018 they announced their long-awaited return.

Competition: Win tickets to see Doves perform at Zebedee’s Yard

The deafening response to the news that Doves would play their cherished songs again has set the optimistic course for what lies ahead.

Tickets are available now priced at £32.50 and £45.00 for VIP tickets. Telephone box fffice on: 0844 249 1000 or order online at: www.hullboxoffice.com/ and www.eventim.co.uk

Lincs Scene have teamed up with Inner City Live and MP Promotions to offer one lucky reader the chance to win a pair of tickets to see Doves and Idlewild perform at Zebedee’s Yard, Hull on Thursday 22nd August. To be in with a chance of winning this fantastic prize, answer the following question and email your answer, name and address to design@lincsscene.com. Please type “Doves” in the email subject line. Closing date for entries: 08-08-19. Winners will be chosen at random and notified by email. Question: Doves 2000 singles from their debut studio album ‘Lost Souls’ was titled..... A) Catch the sun B) Catch the breeze C) Catch the moment

Local girl raises £150 for Bransby Horses in memory of her own mare

Charity News

Local girl, Eve Corrigan, 11, visited Bransby Horses Rescue and Welfare on Saturday 29th June to present a very special cheque for £150. Eve has been raising money in memory of her own horse, Bracken, who passed away earlier this year. From cake sales to odd jobs, Eve has raised this money for the charity, so that neglected and mistreated horses and ponies can be cared for and get a second chance at life. Having loved and cared for her pony Bracken for 18 months and being the best of friends, Bracken became ill with a tumour and the difficult decision was made to euthanase her. Since that moment, Eve has dedicated her energy to raising funds for her favourite equine charity and a place which she had visited many times with her family. Eve worked hard raising money by holding a cake sale, a toy sale and by doing jobs for friends and relatives. When Eve told Bransby Horses she had raised £150 for them, they invited her to their site for a very special tour, to meet the team and some of the four-legged residents too. Eve Corrigan said: “I will really miss Bracken and still love her so much so I wanted to do something to help other ponies and horses. I wanted all the sadness I felt about losing my own pony to become something positive. I am so pleased to have been able to raise this money and hope it makes a difference to the hundreds of animals this charity helps.”

six months alone, the charity have taken in 52 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. The charity now has almost 1,000 animals in their care, with 444 on site and 520 in foster homes. To find out more about the charity, the work they do or to learn about ways you can support them, please visit: www. bransbyhorses.co.uk Above: Eve and Bracken. Below: Eve with Jo Plummer and Lance the miniature Shetland Pony.

A spokesperson from Bransby Horses said: “Eve has done something so special for us and the ponies we rescue and care for. It is because of very special people like Eve, that we can continue to do the work we do. On behalf of the team and the residents here, a huge thank you Eve, from the bottom of our hearts.” Bransby Horses has been rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming equines for more than 50 years and in the last

Self driving cars Are driverless cars really the transportation of the future, or simply a passing tech fad? Whilst they may seem like the sort of thing from a sci-fi film, there are new developments in the driverless car space all the time. Fully-driverless tech is still at a testing stage, but partial automated technology has been around for a few years. An example of this is automated parking, which can even be controlled remotely.

Motoring will no longer be as boring as the technology will bring the opportunity to turn cars into leisure rooms where you can relax and watch a movie or even sleep as you wait to arrive at your destination. On the down side, the research and development required into producing driverless cars is very costly. When self-driving cars eventually come to market, they will be very expensive until manufacturers find a way to bring down the price.

Whilst we are a long way away from the roads being flooded with driverless cars, we took a look at the potential benefits a fullydriverless car could bring, as well as the hurdles manufacturers will need to overcome to make driverless cars a reality. On the plus side, with more than 90% of car accidents caused by human error, the adoption of autonomous vehicles has the potential to make our roads much safer. Many experts point to the remarkable safety record of modern aircraft to illustrate the potential safety of self-driving cars. Flying is recognised as one of the safest modes of transport, with just one fatal accident occurring for every three million large commercial passenger flights. Commercial aircraft are only in the hands of a human for about three to six minutes each flight (mainly during landing and take-off), with automated systems in charge for the rest of the time. A huge benefit of self-driving cars is that it could give more independence to disabled people. Those who can’t see well or those with physical difficulties that prevent them from driving often rely on others to get around. In 2012 Google gave Steve Mahan, who is legally blind, the opportunity to test a Google self-driving car. Mr Mahan sat back as the car steered itself using sensors, allowing the car to position itself safely in traffic. He was taken to get food from a drive-through and to pick up his laundry from the dry cleaners. Most of the driverless vehicles in existence now are fully electric. Whilst the battery charge is still indirectly contributing to emissions, it is at a much lower level than traditional petrol or diesel engines. Not only that, driverless vehicles also cause less air pollution by using less fuel and energy when driving. Most fuel is burned when driving at high speeds, braking and re-accelerating excessively. The driving style of autonomous vehicles cut these factors out - meaning less fuel is burned. Reduction in traffic Whilst also being an environmental benefit, we felt this needed its own shout out. If all vehicles on the road were driverless, the AI could communicate with all other vehicles to avoid creating traffic jams. Not only would this benefit the air quality, it would also mean a reduction in the dreaded commute. Self-driving cars bring the great benefit of not having to concentrate on what is happening on the road. Commutes

28 | Lincs Scene

As drivers, we face many obstacles on the road that require us to use our judgement. It would be easy to program a driverless car to make an emergency stop if it detects an object in the middle of the road. However, the driverless car may struggle in calculating the likelihood of being hit from behind due to sudden braking. A huge pile up could be potentially caused by a cardboard box in the road due to a machine simply not being able to comprehend how much danger the box presents. Many driving scenarios require a human component which is derived from understanding consequences and being familiar with certain situations. It will take much trial and error until we can be confident that self-driving cars are up for this task. From judgement calls, we also arrive at moral dilemmas. In the event of an accident, should driverless cars be programmed to protect the occupants of the vehicle at all costs, or should they be programmed to do the least amount of damage to people and other vehicles that could be in its way? Should they swerve to avoid a dog and risk a collision with another car? Its accepted that normal driving carries risks, however we as drivers have some level of control. Asking people to put their lives into the hands of technology is a huge step. The media outcry from the car accidents involving driverless cars demonstrate that we have a much lower tolerance for mistakes caused by this modern technology than human drivers.

‘parkrun Practice’. Is your GP surgery signed up?

Activity Scene

On Saturday 1st June over 2000 GP surgeries participated in parkruns across the country to celebrate the 1st Anniversary of ‘parkrun Practice’ as part of the GP parkrun Pledge Day. ‘parkrun Practice’ is an initiative created by parkrun UK and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) to encourage GP surgeries to promote positive healthy lifestyle choices to patients and staff by prescribing parkrun and developing close links with their local parkrun. Involvement in ‘parkrun Practice’ supports local surgeries to: Improve the health and wellbeing of patients and carers, reducing the need for lifelong medication. Improve the health and wellbeing of practice staff. Raise awareness amongst the parkrun community of services that GP surgeries provide. Contribute to the development of a local community and environment that is centred around wellness generation. Support the UK-wide movement to scale up social prescribing activities. There are now over a dozen certified ‘parkrun Practices’ in Lincolnshire with four based in the Lincoln area including the University of Lincoln Health Service, Cliff House Medical Practice, Branston Surgery, and Brant Road and Springcliffe Surgery. Is your GP surgery signed up? If not perhaps you could encourage them to register. Would you be in interested in becoming a ‘parkrun Practice’? It is really easy to register and more information can be found at www.rcgp.org.uk/parkrun.

Above: Representatives from Branston Surgery. Below: Parkrun briefing. Both images courtesy of Tom George. parkrun is free to enter and is organised by local volunteer teams. You are welcome to walk, run, jog, volunteer or spectate – you can participate in any way that suits you and there is certainly no obligation to run. It is open to all, including those who are inactive, have health conditions or disabilities and provides a great opportunity to socialise, make friends and be part of a welcoming and supportive community. Runners who have completed the “milestones” of 50, 100, 250 or 500 separate runs are rewarded with a free t-shirt. Juniors also receive a t-shirt for completing 10 runs. So why not join your local parkrun? It’s a fun way to get fit and socialise with like minded people and new runners are always offered a warm welcome. Register online at www.parkrun.org.uk/ You will need to print your ID barcode and bring this with you on the day to your chosen run. No barcode no time.

So what is parkrun, you may ask? parkrun is a weekly five kilometre event, held every Saturday morning in areas of open space with 850 locations across the UK. Junior parkrun is a spinoff event that provides a two kilometre run for children aged four to 14 and their families on Sunday mornings. There are several parkruns across Lincolnshire including Lincoln, Gainsborough, Belton House, Market Rasen, Scunthorpe, Normanby Hall, Cleethorpes and Boston parkrun with the possibility of new events starting over the coming year. Runners (or ‘tourists’ as they have become known) are encouraged to travel to and complete any parkrun and there are many unoficial challenges to take part in such as “Londone” which involves running every event in London.

GROW - Creating gardens in Lincolnshire hospitals

Charity Scene

Hospital patients will be able to enjoy a new garden sooner than expected following a generous donation to a charity that is transforming hospital gardens. Local charity GROW, which stands for Gardens Restore Our Wellbeing, are planning to design and build practical but tranquil gardens for patients, visitors and staff at Lincolnshire’s hospitals. The first garden to be transformed is ward 6 at Grantham and District Hospital, and following a huge £9,500 donation from the League of Friends of Grantham Hospital, the garden can now blossom.

Above: 3D visualisation of proposed design for the “Adopt a Garden” scheme at Grantham Hospital, Ward 6 by Applewhite Garden Design.

Health professionals acknowledge that there is increasing evidence that exposure to plants and green space, and particularly to gardening, is beneficial to mental and physical health, and so could reduce the pressure on NHS services.

The bespoke garden design will be accessible for all patients on the ward, will have plants which can weather all seasons and will be a great habitat for wildlife.

Health professionals should therefore encourage their patients to make use of green space and to work in gardens, and should pressure local authorities to increase open spaces and the number of trees, thus also helping to counteract air pollution and climate change. Simon Needham, chairman of the League of Friends of Grantham Hospital, which has raised around £1 million for the hospital in the last 49 years, said: “We are delighted to have been able to make this donation. It has only been possible thanks to all of those who’ve supported the League of Friends, especially those who have been tirelessly fund-raising for us.” Ward 6 cares for people who have had a stroke or have respiratory issues, and the new garden will aid patients with their rehabilitation. It will also provide a much needed space for family and friends to go when visiting their loved ones. Nikki Applewhite, GROW founder and garden landscaper, said: “When my father was in hospital for a long period, there was nowhere for us to take him or for us to go if we needed some time to ourselves. We hope that GROW will make people’s time in hospital, whether as a patient or a visitor, a better experience. “We can’t thank the League of Friends of Grantham Hospital enough for this donation. It’s a great boost and will allow us to complete the garden before the end of summer.”

34 | Lincs Scene

Staff, patients and the people of Grantham continue to fund-raise for the ward 6 garden, as the total cost of the transformation is around £15,000 Ward 6 sister Tracy Pemberton said: “All of us on the ward would like to say a huge thanks to the League of Friends for their incredibly kind donation. We’re looking forward to taking our patients outside to enjoy the sunshine and our occupational therapists will be able to do some gardening with them too. This will make such a difference to our patients and we’re very excited.” GROW is hosting various fund raising events over the course of the year to help fund more ambitious garden projects including a bank holiday extravaganza at The Kings Arms, Grantham and a guided talk and tour at Ashfield House Arboretum in Branston. Once it’s ready for patients and visitors to enjoy, GROW will start work on another garden for United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust, which has hospitals in Grantham, Lincoln, Boston and Louth. Steve Harley Acoustic Trio play Louth Town Hall

Competition

Steve Harley Acoustic Trio play Louth Town Hall on Friday, 13 September 2019 . Steve Harley, the original Cockney Rebel, tours frequently with his Acoustic Trio, playing an intimate, unique and atmospheric show. The performance promises subtle lyricism, mingled with great improvisation and rocky rhythms. Steve will be accompanied by his Cockney Rebel band-mates of long-standing, Barry Wickens (violin and guitar) and James Lascelles (piano and percussion). The set will be built around tracks from any or all 13 of Steve’s original albums and will include all-time favourites like Mr Soft, Judy Teen, Mr Raffles, Sebastian, and of course the world-wide classic hit, Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me), all blending in with more recent tracks from critically-acclaimed albums The Quality Of Mercy and Stranger Comes To Town. “Playing the songs in an acoustic format gives me time and space to enjoy every second. And we improvise, which is always a big excitement for any musician. We can loosen off the arrangements and really explore. It gets pretty exciting during the acoustic sets,” says Steve Harley. Steve Harley Acoustic Trio perform a set which is an unmissable chance for fans to connect with the man Rod Stewart has

described as “One of the finest lyricists Britain has ever produced”, in a special setting. MOJO said simply, “Harley creates rock songs that are proud, lyrical and full of yearning.” Steve has also been described as “A consummate performer at the top of his game,” and this show will bear that out. Tickets for the Steve Harley Acoustic Trio – Friday, 13th September 2019 show are available from: Louth Town Hall. Box Office No: 01507 354336. Doors – 7.30pm / On-Stage – 8.00pm. Odlings of Navenby – Bomber County Sausage

Rate My Sausage

This month Simon Ruddlesdin is making a surprise return visit an old favourite in his quest to find Lincolnshire’s best bangers in ‘Rate My Sausage’ with a trip to Odlings Butchers at Navenby. We only ever make return visits for two reasons – to confirm how good a sausage was on the first visit, or to confirm how utterly foul. Which is it? Well we reviewed Odling’s Lincolnshire variety last year and raved about the quality, the flavour, the staff – everything. So you can probably guess why we’ve gone back. Opening Hours: Monday – 0600 to 1800 Tuesday – 0600 to 1800 Wednesday – 0600 to 1800 Thursday – 0600 to 1800 Friday – 0600 to 1800 Saturday – 0600 to 1730 Sunday – 1000 to 1600

Texture: First thing to note is all the different shapes and sizes. We like this a lot. They are made up of lovely big bobbly bits, which is what we like. Lovely large lumps of extremely local, high quality pork and fat combine beautifully to make eating them a real treat. The skins are also very good, almost “pingy”, and when you cut into the sausage the skin yanks the banger apart like a reverse-action Venus fly trap. It’s as if the sausage is desperate to be eaten. You’ll find it hard to squish your fork through these beauties, so they’re a million miles better than any supermarket sausage. Vital Statistics:

Flavour: The unique selling point for the Bomber County variety is that they’ve used Bomber County real ale in place of water. Wow, what a difference this makes. The flavour is full and fabulous, and cuddles your taste buds rather than slapping them. Seasoning is very well balanced, there’s enough of a hint of pepper to let you know it’s there but not overpowering. Such a homely and comforting flavour, very impressive, it will take you straight back to eating bangers and mash after school, while watching Take Hart and Animal Magic.

Average weight uncooked = 63 grams. Average weight cooked = 55 grams. Meat content = 85 %. Value For Money: £4.29 for 8 sausages weighing 504 grams. This works out as £8.52 per kg and 54p per banger. We rate this as fantastic value for money. The Imaginatively Titled Next Day Cold Sausage Test: The surviving bangers travelled with me to work the next morning. I had planned to taste them combined with an array of sauces and condiments. It didn’t happen. When I popped the lid off of the box the delicious aroma was just too tempting and they were guzzled in double quick time. On reflection I ‘m saying this was a positive result, and these sausages tasted just as nice the day after frying. And Finally, Esther: A successful return visit, carried out to confirm the high quality of our first experience. Odlings is a great butcher and their bangers are highly recommended. See more reviews from Simon on Twitter @RateMySausage or online at: www.bangersandsausages.blogspot.com

Lunch at Harbour Lights

Review

Harbour Lights is situated in the building that was previously occupied by the Chinese buffet restaurant Harbour City and boasts stunning marina views of Burton Waters with a new outdoor terrace, ideal for alfresco dining or drinks on a pleasant summer’s evening. On arrival we were greeted and shown to a window table with a view of the harbour. The restaurant is fabulously decorated, with beautiful industrial lighting hanging from dark walnut beams, matching tables and cladding with high quality upholstered booths for private dining, all with panoramic views of the marina which generated a warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The staff are friendly and efficient. It is worth noting that the service was not rushed, just the right kind of tempo for the sort of casual lunch we were looking for. For a midweek visit, our sensible drinks consisted of a still water for Niamh (my dining partner and daughter) and a Coke for me. We decided on a no alcohol policy (on a school night) but had a good look at the extensive drinks menu including 14 cocktails, a range of draught beers, lagers and ciders (including Batemans, Staropramen and Aspalls), champagne and impressive wine list. Our drinks soon arrived and we were ready to order. This was the moment I was dreading! My beautiful daughter is a self confessed ‘Gym Bunny’ and counts her macros daily (whatever they are). I was expecting hours of deliberation and off-menu requests but was pleasantly surprised to see a more than average selection of dishes available to health conscious diners. The chefs at Harbour Lights have prepared a high quality British and Mediterranean menu and are very passionate about providing the very best local cuisine with fresh fish landing daily from Grimsby Docks and locally sourced seasonal produce, including Mountains famous Boston sausage. Armed with this information, I placed my order of Boston sausage scotch egg. This was quickly followed by Niamh’s unhesitant selection of soup of the day with fresh bread. Our starters arrived soon after and both plates were visually stunning. The scotch egg (highly recommended) was a huge cricket ball sized portion, freshly made with a distinctive flavour profile of the Boston sausage encasing a perfectly cooked runny yoked egg, served with a tangy red onion chutney and fresh mixed leaf salad. Niamh declared her carrot and star anise soup as deliciously creamy with a sweet aniseed-like fresh aftertaste. The talking soon stopped whilst we both dived into our generously portioned starters.

40 | Lincs Scene

With both plates almost licked clean, we eagerly anticipated our mains which came out in good time. It was difficult to choose from the extensive menu but we were pleased with our choices. My sea bass (two large fillets) fresh from the North Sea, was cooked beautifully, paired with a Thai coconut cream with cockles which gave the dish a pleasant and fragrant kick of heat, providing a perfect balance to this delicately flavoured fish which was finished off with wild basmati rice and pak choi. Niamh’s choice of fillet steak was cooked to perfection, medium rare and was served with sun-blushed vine ripe tomatoes, a large portabello mushroom, watercress and a mixed leaf salad which she preferred to the triple cooked chips. After clearing our plates of two generously sized dishes, we were too full to tackle a pudd, although the chocolate delice of praline cream, candied hazelnut and chocolate ganache was tempting Niamh, she couldn’t quite bring herself to break through her allotted calorie intake for the day and as much as the classic sticky toffee pudding was calling my name, I made a mental note for next time. All in all Harbour Lights is excellent. The idyllic setting is probably one of the best in Lincoln. The food, service, value for money and atmosphere are on par with the very best restaurants we have reviewed. Will I return? Absolutely.. I will be dining at Harbour Lights very soon with my (less judgemental) good lady wife and will have my pudding without fear of a ‘you are what you eat’ lecture from mini me! Venue: Parking: Cost: Verdict:

Harbour Lights, Burton Waters Marina, Lincoln. Ample free parking on-site. £58.95 inc. drinks. Delicious food in a beautiful setting.

Mobile phone users can now switch network with just one text

Technology

The new ruling which came into force at the beginning of July makes it easier for users to get PAC code without their provider trying to persuade them to stay. Consumers are now able to switch their mobile phone provider simply by sending a text message – avoiding the cumbersome process which had been in place previously. The new rules from the regulator Ofcom apply from Monday and are aimed at making it quicker and easier to leave one provider and start with another. The move comes after many consumers find switching difficult, as it requires requesting a PAC code from their provider.

According to Ofcom, many people become frustrated when their provider attempts to make them stay. Almost half of those who chose not to switch said the process was too time-consuming,

Under the new “text-to-switch” process, consumers text PAC to a number, after which the code is sent back. The code is valid for 30 days. The response from the provider will also need to include details of early termination charges or pay-as-you-go credit balances. The consumer can them pass the number on to their new provider. The service is switched within one working day. “The new process is designed to be quick and easy, so customers could request their code while looking for a new deal – for example, while on the phone to a new provider, or in store,” says Ofcom.

Consumers have also sometimes encountered difficulties in paying both their old and their new provider at the same time when switching. Ofcom has now banned mobile providers from charging for notice periods running after the switch date. Ofcom estimates this will result in savings to the consumer of £10m a year.

Minted lamb burgers with herb mayonnaise

Recipe

These minted lamb burgers taste delicious and are quick and easy to make. They are perfect for a quick dinner or a great crowd pleaser at a summer barbecue for friends and family. Lamb mince is perfect for burgers and adding in plenty of fresh mint to the mix too makes something extra delicious - a classic flavour combination. To finish this burger we’ve topped it with some herb mayonnaise which adds a lovely extra freshness. Ingredients: Burgers (serves four): • 500g lamb mince • A handful of fresh mint leaves • ¼ tsp salt Herb mayonnaise: • 4 tbsp mayonnaise • Small handful of fresh mint leaves • Small handful of fresh coriander • Couple of sprigs of fresh thyme (leaves only) • Zest of ¼ of a lemon • Salt Method: Pre-heat oven to 220°C/200°C fan. Finely chop the mint leaves (a handful) and put them into a large bowl. Add the lamb mince (500g) and salt (¼ tsp) and mix with your hands until the mint leaves and salt are evenly distributed. Divide the mixture into four and shape into burgers. Make a little dent in the centre of each one (as the meat naturally puffs up as it cooks, so this will ensure that you end up with a flat burger). Cook your burgers in the pre-heated oven for 12-14 minutes. Alternatively cook under a grill, on a barbecue or pan fry for six to seven minutes on each side. While the burgers are cooking, make the herb mayonnaise.

46 | Lincs Scene

Put the mayonnaise (4 tbsp), herbs (a small handful of fresh mint leaves, a small handful of fresh coriander, the leaves from a couple of sprigs of fresh thyme) and the zest of ¼ of a lemon into a bowl. Blitz with a hand blender until the herbs are finely chopped and evenly distributed in the mayonnaise. Season with salt to taste. Our burgers were served in toasted burger buns, a generous portion of mayonnaise, a leafy salad and red onion. Whisky of the month: Armorik Double Maturation single malt whisky

Distilled

Celtic culture, rugged landscapes, a bracing maritime climate and a background of sudden, sharp storms; sounds like the standard recipe for a typical coastal or island Scotch or Irish distillery, doesn’t it? Well, you would be wrong. This month, we are paying a visit to Warenghem Distillery in – Brittany. Let’s get one thing sorted out first. Breton whiskies are not French whiskies, they are Breton whiskies. After all, you wouldn’t call Scotch whisky British whisky would you (although technically it is)? Brittany is France’s Celtic fringe and has its own Celtic language closely related to Welsh. Indeed, Edward III’s Welsh archers were apparently astounded to be able to understand the locals when campaigning there during the Hundred Years War. Warenghem Distillery was founded in 1900 to distil traditional local fruit spirits and liqueurs. Then in 1983, the family decided to put their years of experience in distilling and maturation in wooden barrels in to making whisky. The distillery is fortunate enough to be sited over a natural spring, the Rest Avel (The

Wind’s Dwelling). Although the unprepossessing access is via a manhole cover in a concrete plinth, by drilling down below 100 metres, they can draw pure and crystal clear water that has been filtered for hundreds of years through Breton granite. They use Breton wheat to produce grain for their blended whiskies and barley from France (see, there’s that difference again) for their single malt whiskies. Their wood management utilises ex-bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks together with a selection of Brittany oak casks; these latter lend a natural sweetness and delicate woody notes. After seeking inspiration in Scotland, they first produced a blend

48 | Lincs Scene

Above: Amorik Sherry Cask and Double Maturation single malt whiskys. Below: Warengham Distillery, Brittany. in 1987 and then a single malt in 1998. Their range is now Breizh blended whisky (the modern Breton name for Brittany) and the Armorik range of single malts (the name for Brittany in preRoman times). Breizh is a pleasing, light blend ideal for cocktails or in a highball. The single malts come in a variety of finishes, but my favourite is the Armorik Double Maturation. Matured for many years in locally designed unique Brittany oak casks, it then has a second maturation in ex-Oloroso casks for richness and elegance. It has citrus and apple on the nose backed up by salted caramel butter. The mouth has fine woody and cereal

notes with a full mouthfeel and touches of heather honey. The finish is long with pleasant cereal and marine notes. Brittany is a lovely place to spend a few days in and there is plenty to do there. Warenghem is a pleasant, friendly distillery to visit and offers the chance to try their whisky and to buy on site; tours are available in English. Are you ready for the challenge?

Standard: 15 September £20.50 (13 miles) £23.50 (26 miles). Late entry: 06 October £23.50 (13 miles) £26.50 (26 miles). There will be no entries on the day. Children aged 14-16 can take part in the walks or the 13-mile run if accompanied by an adult.

It’s a marathon like no other – the Spires and Steeple Challenge 2017 will take participants into the heart of Lincolnshire’s heritage.

There are 5 checkpoints along the route all with water stations and toilet facilities. The route is comprehensively signed with marshals located at strategic points.

The route of the challenge on Sunday, October 13, roughly follows the village-to-village trail from Lincoln Cathedral to St Deny’s Church, Sleaford, which can be tackled as a full or half marathon.

Entrants need to sign in prior to the start to receive participant number and wristbands. The number must be worn and be visible as the event uses a wristband system in order to keep a track of participants who must deposit one of the bands at each checkpoint and at the finish when they will be given a memento.

Event News

Public footpaths and bridleways are marked through the picturesque villages south of the city in North Kesteven that make up part of the district’s Spires and Steeples Arts and Heritage Trail. “The name Spires and Steeples refers to the spires of churches once used as landmarks to navigate from village to village and to the rural sport of steeplechasing, races from steeple to steeple,” said North Kesteven District Council events officer, Donna Sutton. “It also recognises the part the churches have played in the lives of these communities, as well as being a reflection of the times, families and cultures that created, altered and rebuilt them.” The longer event will start in Lincoln at 8.30am for walkers and 9.30am for runners and the shorter at 11am from Metheringham Playing Fields on Prince’s Street while both will finish on Eastgate green outside Sleaford’s National Centre for Craft and Design. The event, which has been held since 2008, is open to anyone over 16, but places are limited to 1,000 entrants. Fees as follows: Early bird: 30 June £18.50 (13 miles) £20.50 (26 miles.

Minster wins national green business award

News

Lincolnshire based civil engineering firm, Minster Surfacing has been recognised for its commitment to recycling and green technology at the BusinessGreen Leaders Awards 2019. Minster, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, won Circular Economy Project of the Year for its work to reduce waste and for its commitment to recycling. The BusinessGreen Leaders Awards are one of the most prestigious green awards in the country and are organised by the UK’s leading website for green business news and analysis, BusinessGreen. Minster is a civil engineering firm which works on major developments across the country as well as working on roads across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. The company also works on construction and maintenance projects for the Ministry of Defence and the RAF. More than 350 businesses entered the awards, with judges including senior figures from business, politics and environmental organisations. The judges were hugely impressed by Minster Surfacing’s commitment to slashing environmental impacts and its pioneering techniques for recycling old roads to create new ones, which have been credited with slashing waste levels, boosting recycled content, and cutting emissions by almost a third.

Above: Bruce Spencer-Knott with host Rachel Parris at Business GreenLeaders Awards. with the majority of ‘new’ material being produced using secondary aggregates. The company also used removed road material to create 100% recycled farm tracks and yards. Overall, Minster’s use of technology to improve the way it works has helped it to dramatically cut the carbon footprint of its work and it has prevented tens of thousands of tonnes of material from going to waste. It has also reduced the need for mineral aggregate and oil (the main ingredients of asphalt) from needing to be extracted, refined, processed and transported.

The Circular Economy Project of the Year category at the BusinessGreen Leaders Awards recognises innovative work that eliminates waste and uses recycling to deliver financial and competitive benefits to an organisation or community.

Speaking about the award, Minster’s Managing Director, Bruce Spencer-Knott said: “Being recognised on a national level for our work to eliminate waste, cut emissions and reduce our reliance on quarrying is absolutely fantastic. Road surfacing and civil engineering have been slow to adapt to greener ways of working, but we’re leading the way and proving that the industry can be safer, cleaner and greener.

Minster’s internal project, named ‘smarter, cleaner, greener road surfacing’, saw the firm combining a wide range of technologies, tools and techniques to reduce waste, improve safety and improve quality at all stages of the construction process.

“I’m very proud of our team and the way they’ve embraced new ways of working. We’re modernising an industry, we’re making the roads better, we’re helping the environment and we’re putting Lincoln on the map.

This includes the use of vehicle-mounted 3D laser scanning technology to measure roads with pinpoint accuracy. This is used to create computer aided designs and measurements, providing detailed instructions for construction teams and automated machinery, enabling material to be used more efficiently and to high level quality.

“We were up against some really impressive companies at the BusinessGreen Leaders Awards and it was inspiring to see so many green innovations across a wide range of sectors. To have our company among the winners is a major achievement and I couldn’t be more proud.”

In addition to this, temperature monitoring systems and GPS tracking is fitted to machinery so that the quality of the material is recorded and measured as it gets used for quality assurance and quality control which also reduces waste. Also, around 50% of the material used on roads was recycled either on-site or using material removed from other old roads,

35,000 copies delivered door to door

The next year could bring about even more green accolades for Minster as the company is currently developing a new system which it hopes will enable it to produce roads that are made from 90% recycled material. Working alongside Lincolnshire County Council’s in-house materials laboratory, the company aims to have the new system in-use by the end of 2019. Motorhome staycations on the rise

Lifestyle

A staycation is the idea of taking a trip somewhere a little closer to home, such as taking the opportunity to visit somewhere in your home country as opposed to travelling abroad. Whether you choose to take a short trip or go somewhere for a little longer, there are many advantages of staying closer to home. It was an icon of the ’60s, a carefree, hippy way of motoring around the country, stopping for the night by the roadside in front of stunning views. Now the campervan is making a comeback, growing even faster than the boom in family camping. But far from the “turn on, tune in, drop out” vibe of 50 years ago motor homes are being sold for six-figure sums, close to the average house price and containing everything from gas hobs to wine coolers. It is a telling pointer to the increasing popularity of modern motorhomes and the parks and sites they go to that the industry expects a record number of ‘staycationers’ this summer.

Above: Newer model motorhomes come complete with all the fixtures and fittings for a luxury staycation. Below: The iconic 60s campervan. with the popularity of staycations and a buoyant motorhome market, the company are receiving many enquires from new and experienced campers looking to upgrade.

With the vast improvements in the lightweight and more durable construction of the latest tourers, be that caravans or motorhomes, and the matching advances in the quality and user-friendliness of the sites they visit it is no wonder that more people are waking up to the appeal of holidaying in this country. Touring is as easy as packing and hitching and setting off to a destination of your choice. There is much more freedom than jetting off on a package tour and, of course, there is the added benefit that a motorhome can be used at any time of the year, for a short weekend break or a longer holiday. We can sometimes forget what’s on our own doorstep; there is so much culture and so many sightseeing points only a matter of hours away. Whether you fancy spending some time relaxing on a beach or you’d prefer exploring a city you’ve never been to, you’ll find tons of fun without leaving the country. And this, plus the investment they represent, is driving the increasing popularity. Unlike the cost of a one-off holiday abroad, a motorhome holds its value well, which makes them very good value for money. Indeed, trade experts say that registrations of new motorhomes increased by 16 per cent in the January to April period this year, against the same time a year ago and dealers are predicting a strong year. Steve Williamson franchisee operator for one of the largest motorhome dealers in the UK, Motorhome Depot, said that

60 | Lincs Scene

He said people are looking for a more comfortable way of enjoying the outdoors and consider a motor home as a sound lifestyle investment. He added: “Motorhome Depot stock a huge range of motorhomes to suit all budgets and have vehicles available throughout the country. “We take the stress and hassle out of buying and selling, by matching customers with genuine enquiries and eliminating the time wasters. We arrange your viewings, submit an offer for you, manage negotiations, agree a sale and even handle the payments and administration... it’s a simple and secure process. “Sales have increased dramatically as more and more people buy into the benefits of owning their own motorhome and we see this trend continuing as staycations increase in popularity”. If you are interested in buying or selling a motorhome the quick and easy way, check out the Motorhomes Depot advertisement on page 54.
