Christmas tree recycling scheme to support St Barnabas Hospice

News Amelia Mochan, Event Fundraiser for St Barnabas Hospice said: “Our Tree-cycle is the easiest way to get rid of your Christmas tree after the festivities are over and every donation made will make a real difference to the care and services we offer across the county.

St Barnabas Hospice will be offering a Christmas tree recycling service in the New Year for thousands of households across Lincolnshire

“It certainly is the greenest and most charitable way to clean up after Christmas.” The hospice will collect trees from select postcodes throughout Lincolnshire. For the full list of postcodes and to register your tree, go online to

The Tree-cycle service will take place on Saturday 12th January 2019, when St Barnabas Hospice will collect and recycle unwanted Christmas trees from select postcodes across Lincolnshire.

For further information about the scheme please telephone 01522 540 300 or email fundraising@

Last year the charity recycled 1,500 trees and raised £10,000 to support families living with a life limiting or terminal illness in Lincolnshire.

Bransby Horses Christmas Fayre

Join in the festive fun at Bransby Horses’ Christmas Fayre on Saturday 8th December, 11am-4pm. There is something for the whole family to enjoy. The wide variety of stalls on the day and the charity’s Gift Shop, with this year’s Christmas gifts inside, gives ample opportunity to start the Christmas shopping or pick up those last-minute gifts. Sing along with the choir in the courtyard, who will be providing the festive entertainment for visitors to enjoy. There will of course be a special appearance from Santa himself and visitors can meet him in the grotto throughout the afternoon. Visitors can warm up and enjoy some deliciously hearty food in the Feedroom Café, including the much-loved homemade cakes. There will also be mulled wine for adults and homemade mince pies for all to buy and enjoy. All funds raised from the Christmas Fayre go directly back to helping to care for the equines living at the charity. It will also allow the dedicated and knowledgeable staff to continue their vital work to help horses in need and improve their welfare.

‘Rate my sausage’ Simpsons Butchers Lincolnshire Sausages We are delighted to welcome guest writer, Simon Ruddlesdin to our team. Simon, a life long Leeds United supporter and enthusiastic allotment tenant who has not so much opted for the full on ‘Good Life’ but enjoys growing and eating his home grown produce and finding good value wherever possible. Over the next few editions we will follow Simon as he trawls through the county finding the best bangers in ‘Rate my sausage’. First up, Simpsons Butchers... Simpsons is a chain of butchers in Lincolnshire, and are part of the Q Guild – this is a real mark of excellence, and my dealings with them have so far confirmed that they are deserving members. I visited their Sleaford shop and was, as usual, impressed with the experience. Unusually for a high street butcher Simpsons run their own rewards scheme, available for both in-store customers and for online shoppers. This is a great marketing idea to ensure their customers keep returning – however I think people probably make return visits due to the quality of produce on offer, and not just to top-up their Simpcard. They have a functional website too, where you can order online for delivery anywhere in the UK. Have a look, but not before you finish reading this review - There are six lovely Simpsons stores dotted around, but this one is located inside Four Seasons Garden Centre at Silk Willoughby. Head out of the market town of Sleaford on London Road and after a mile or so you will find them on the right hand side. Don’t turn to the left or you’ll find yourself in Birdies, which claims to be a golf centre and not a “gentlemen’s club” but we shall never know the truth.... If you’re using SausNav use the following postcodes for their shops: Sleaford NG34 8NY, Lincoln LN2 4SX, South Hykeham LN6 9NT, Heckington NG34 9RW, Spalding PE11 1SG and Stamford PE9 4BB. Stanwatch: If you’re a fan of the men in white coats pottering around behind the scenes then you will love this place. There’s an almost

12 | Lincs Scene

Food & Drink

constant buzz of activity behind the counter. Stans carrying freshly baked pastries hither and thither, stans topping up the professional looking chilled display cabinet, and a whole host of stans in the actual butchery area, which you will spot off to the right behind the counter. Flavour: These bangers are very herby, the mouth is filled with sagey flavour, almost (but not quite) too much. Did Stan the butcher cough when weighing out the herbs and adding them to the mix? The pork is light and sweet and definitely takes a supporting role. These sausages taste a million times better than some sludgy monstrosity from a supermarket. Texture: First thing to note is the skins – and how they are not like Amanda Holden’s lips. That is, they are not made of collagen. These natural sausage skins are a delight, there’s a lovely snap when you cut them and a nice resistance when you’re chewing. Take a look at the filling in the pictures and you’ll see that is quite fine and juicy – a little too fine to be perfect for us but still pretty good. We love the range of sizes we found in this offering from Simpsons, from the proverbial “blind cobbler’s thumb” right the way up to some large and chunky meat torpedoes. Good stuff, and proof that these are hand-made and not squirted out of an automated machine onto a conveyor belt. Vital Statistics Average Weight: Meat Content: Value For Money:

Uncooked 61 grams, cooked 52grams 68 % £3.69 for 8 sausages weighing 485 grams £7.60 per kg and 46p per banger We rate this as very good value for money

Next month: Hambleton Farms at Doddington Hall. See more from Simon at or on Twitter @RateMy Sausage

Sadie’s quick and easy Lincolnshire plum loaf Looking through my old local cookbooks, it’s clear to me there is no definitive recipe for plum loaf. With no consensus on the name, ingredients or method and it doesn’t even have any plums in it! Plum was actually the old generic term for any dried fruit. What we can agree on is that in our county any self-respecting Christmas spread wouldn’t be complete without a plate of plum loaf, sliced, spread with butter and topped with a good hard cheese.

Recipe minutes. Cool in tins for ten minutes before turning out onto a cooling rack. When completely cold, wrap and store in an airtight tin for at least 24 hours before slicing. May I take this opportunity to thank you for your lovely feedback on my recipes throughout the year, I’m so pleased you enjoy making and eating them! Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

With there being so many variables, I’m quite relaxed about my “shortcut” of incorporating a jar of mincemeat. Especially as we approach the festive season, when both time and money are perhaps under more pressure than usual. This recipe yields two large 2lb loaves. It freezes well, so it is just as easy to make two, one for now and one in reserve. The inclusion of lard gives a wonderful melting texture, but it is quite crumbly when you first make it, so I recommend giving it 24 hours before slicing. It keeps really well in an airtight tin. Ingredients 680g self-raising flour 340g caster sugar 340g lard cubed ½ tsp salt ½ tsp ground nutmeg ½ tsp ground ginger 310g currants 450g jar mincemeat 3 eggs, lightly beaten 425ml milk Method: Preheat oven to 180°C / 170°C fan / gas mark 4. Grease and line 2 x 2lb / 900g loaf tins. Sieve flour, sugar, salt and spices together. Rub in the lard. Stir in currants and mincemeat. Pour in beaten egg and milk and mix well. Divide mixture between the tins, bake on centre shelf for approximately fifty

Have a seriously glorious Christmas in 2018 with Cosy Club

Competition Serving up some seriously delicious courses, Cosy Club is offering 3 courses for £27.95 per person between 22nd November - 24th December and you can book now. The menu, packed with scrumptious dishes, boasts a starting sharing platter, from the mouth-watering smoked salmon blinis with lemon and chive crème fraiche and baby rocket to baked camembert with olive oil toasted sourdough soldiers and fig and date chutney. For the delectable mains, the Norfolk turkey and smoked bacon pie or hearty halloumi and winter vegetable wellington will keep you warm from the winter chill.

The former Lincoln Corn Exchange building was restored in February of this year and given an impressive new lease of life as a quirky restaurant when the Lincoln Cosy Club opened as part of the new Cornhill Quarter development.

If that doesn’t sound quite enough (and if you’ll still have room for more), the puddings will polish off the Christmas feast spectacularly. Whether a chocolate brownie and cinder toffee trifle with chocolate fudge sauce and salted caramel cream or the limoncello cheesecake is up your street, the Cosy Club Christmas menu will kick start the festive season perfectly.

The restoration of this Grade 2 listed historical building into a fabulously grand bar and restaurant is very impressive. Standing proudly in the original building, Cosy Club have elegantly transformed the space with 1930s decor whilst retaining a number or original features like exposed beams, original marketplace advertisements and portraits of those who previously walked the floors of the building. If you are planning a Christmas party or a cosy Christmas dinner for two, The Cosy Club Christmas menu will offer all your Christmas favourites and get you into a fabulously festive spirit.

Arran Distillery 14 year old Single Malt Whisky

This month, we’re crossing the sea again but still remaining in Scotland. The Isle of Arran Distillery is at Lochranza, on the northern tip of the island. It is one of the newest distilleries in Scotland, having started production as recently as 1995. This may seem a rather long time ago, but in an industry that takes three years to produce its basic product and whiskies of 18 years old or more are not unusual, it is quite recent. The reason for this is that the spirit from a whisky still must be matured in oak barrels for at least three years and a day before it can legally be called whisky. This maturation period was introduced by David Lloyd George in 1909 when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer; the teetotal Welsh politician thought that making drinkers have to wait two years for their whisky to mature (later extended to three) would encourage people to drink less. Ironically, the result was to make whisky far tastier and therefore more popular than ever. The distillery produces both unpeated whiskies, under their own name, and peated whiskies, which they call Machrie Moor, named after a desolate highland area of the island where legendary giant warrior Fingal is reputed to have tethered his favourite dog Bran to a rock. So successful has this been that the distillers are in the process of building a second distillery on the island at Lagg, at the extreme opposite tip of the island from Lochranza, to concentrate on peated whiskies. Production is expected to start in January 2019, so you can expect to see Lagg whisky hitting the shelves in about 10 years’ time. Something to look forward to!

Above: The Arran Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. Below: Isle of Arran Distillery. itself is beautiful and the visitor centre, built in a time by which visitors to distilleries had become the norm, is a fully integrated part of the whole, with an excellently guided and interesting tour of an exceptionally well laid out and easy to understand distillery. Arran Scotch Whiskies are available at Lincoln Whisky Shop. See the advertisement on page 35 for contact details.

Geography also gives the distillery its logo of two Golden Eagles, from the pair that nests in the hills overlooking the distillery. Arran’s entry level whisky is a 10 year old. They also have an 18 year old, a number of cask finishes such as Amarone and Port and a series of special releases every so often. There is a Robert Burns in both single malt and blended versions; Isle of Arran is the only distillery authorised by the Burns Estate to use his name, as he worked as an excise official for a time and lived on the mainland coast overlooking the island. To my mind, the most interesting of the regular expressions is the 14 year old. It is a whisky full of character and complexity, fragrant on the nose with peaches, brandy and sweet ginger. The flavour is creamy and spicy, with summer fruits and nuts and a lingering, nutty and dry finish. Isle of Arran is another distillery well worth a visit. The island

UK drivers are addicted to breaking the speed limit

Driving Force the speed limit. The numbers themselves look pretty damning but in reality, when you’re on the motorway it does seem that about half the other motorists are exceeding the speed limit. Interestingly, the drop-off is quite substantial as the speeds increase, as only 11% of motorists exceed the 80mph limit.

It happens. You’re plodding along the motorway, minding your own business and going with the flow of the traffic, when suddenly you look down to see you’ve crept up towards 80 mph. What’s more concerning is that everyone else around you seems to have done the same. Speeding is a widespread issue and statistics from the Department for Transport show that this addiction may be more common than most of us would have thought. The DfT has completed a study observing car journeys at 74 separate sites across the UK. Their study recorded the journeys of 446.6 million motorists and the results are shocking, to say the least. The most concerning findings were that roughly 86.6% of journeys through 20 mph zones are at speeds exceeding 20mph. Bear in mind that 20mph zones are typically found around primary and secondary schools, hospitals, old people’s homes, busy shopping districts and in built-up residential areas. On the motorways, the results of the survey were less surprising but still very poor. Of the journeys monitored in 70 mph zones, 48 per cent of motorists were recorded exceeding

52 | Lincs Scene

Does this suggest that the speed limit is set too low, with 80mph being a more reasonable limit? Bear in mind that we have the second safest roads in Europe, second only to Sweden, yet almost half the people using the motorway network are speeding. Interestingly, only 1% of motorists monitored in the survey were noted to be speeding above 90mph. The survey concluded that people are most likely to exceed the speed limit on normal roads with 30 mph limits in place. In fact, in the study conducted by the Department for Transport, they found that 52% of motorists would typically break the limit in a 30 mph zone. At the other end of the spectrum, the Department of Transport uncovered some particularly dangerous statistics about slow drivers. Of the 446.6 million motorists who were monitored, there were a significant 13.7 million cases of drivers going below 50 mph on the motorway, where the limit is 70mph and almost half the motorists are travelling at 80mph. It goes without saying that this is particularly hazardous and can be a massive cause for congestion. The DfT was keen to point out that the 13.7 million slow drivers were recorded at a time where the traffic was free and flowing.
