Welcome to June’s edition of Lincs Scene. It would be foolish of me to predict tomorrow’s weather with certainty, let alone two weeks ahead when this edition lands on your doormat. However, the experts are predicting a six week heatwave to kick-start summer.

With the summer event season in full swing, this will come as great news to organisers of the many events across the county over the next few weeks. Highlights include the Lincolnshire Show, The Magic of Motown Under The Stars, Tattershall Castle Medieval Falconry Weekend and the long awaited return of Lincoln Castle Dog Friendly Weekend. As all of these events are outdoors, I really hope that the weather predictions are on the money.

Simon Ruddlesdin visits Meridian Meats in Louth to source Lincolnshire’s finest bangers in ‘Rate My Sausage’ and whisky expert Nick Ridout is back to share with us his choice of whisky of the month in ‘Distilled’. We visit The Ferry Boat at Washingborough for Sunday lunch in our ‘Table For Two’ review and Sadie Hirst shares her classic and delicious Scotch Egg recipe.

Magic of Motown Under The Stars at Lincoln Castle

Last Summer saw the Magic of Motown – Under the Stars wow a 5000-strong crowd at Rochester Castle and similar numbers were left dancing in the aisles at Chepstow Castle, Leeds Millennium Square and London’s O2. Lincoln business woman makes national award shortlist Owner of local aesthetics and wellness clinic Body Lipo Lincoln, Louise White, is celebrating after being shortlisted for the national Woman Who Achieves Awards 2019.

Health and wellness expert Louise has made it onto the shortlist for two of the awards’ prestigious categories - the ‘Woman Who Achieves Micro Business’, which aims to celebrate and recognise small businesses making a difference, and ‘Woman Who Achieves and Innovates through STEM’, recognising careers and business in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

She said: “I am incredibly proud to have set up a small business in Lincolnshire and to have been shortlisted for not only one, but two awards is a real honour.

“It’s important for my clinic to offer niche, bespoke treatments that are designed to help women suffering from a variety of female-specific health issues, whether it is incontinence or symptoms of the menopause. I’m proud to be offering these treatments to so many women who need them.

“A big part of the work I am trying to do is campaigning to break down the taboos of these so-called ‘embarrassing’ conditions such as bladder leakage. I’ve centred my business and personal life around trying to help other women feel more confident in themselves and I’m thrilled to have been recognised for that.”

The awards were set up by Sandra Garlick, the founder of Woman Who, to celebrate the achievements of inspiring businesswomen across the UK and inspire future female entrepreneurs.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in June 2019 held at Coombe Abbey Hotel in Coventry.

Don’t be so short-sighted!

A recent survey by the DVLA, suggests that 50% of motorists are not aware of the minimum eyesight standards needed for a licence.

Obviously if you are noticing any signs that your eyesight is deteriorating, such as finding it more difficult to see when driving at night or finding it harder to judge distances, you should book in with your optician immediately rather than waiting for your next check-up.

Your eyes are obviously the most important of the senses when driving, so it’s vital to make sure your vision is up to the legal standard.

If you should (but don’t) wear glasses or contact lenses, as well as putting yours and other people’s lives in danger, you risk huge fines, penalty points and even jail time.

The law states that you must be able to read (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) a car number plate made after 1st September 2001 from 20 metres. You must also meet the minimum eyesight standard for driving by having a visual acuity of at least decimal 0.5 (6/12) measured on the Snellen scale (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) using both eyes together or, if you have sight in one eye only, in that eye.

Since 2013, Police Officers have had the power to request an urgent revocation of a licence through the DVLA if they believe the safety of other road users is at risk if a driver remains on the road.

The Snellen test is administered by an optician, and usually consists of a number of rows of letters which get smaller as you

read down the chart. You must also have an adequate field of vision – talk to your optician about this and take a test.Your vision can naturally deteriorate over time and research shows you can lose up to 40% of your vision before noticing the difference.

You should regularly check your vision by assessing whether you can read a licence plate from 20 metres away (this is approximately five car lengths or 26 steps for a man and 33 steps for a woman), as well as going to the opticians. The NHS recommends you should get your eyes tested every two years (more often if advised by your ophthalmic practitioner or optometrist).

If you are pulled over and fail a roadside eye test, the police now have the facility to contact the DVLA and have your driving licence revoked within a few minutes. This power is known as Cassie’s Law, named after 16-year-old Cassie McCord, who lost her life when a man lost control of his vehicle. It later emerged

he had failed a police eyesight test a day earlier, but a legal loophole meant he could continue driving.

To ensure you are safe to drive on the road, get your eyes tested regularly, inform the DVLA if you have any problems with your eyesight – and wear your glasses!

Lincolnshire’s finest food and drink producers to be celebrated at Revesby Country Fair

One of Lincolnshire’s oldest country fairs is back for 2019 with a celebration of Lincolnshire food and drink, and a world-famous headliner with a difference.

Revesby Country Fair will feature a headline appearance from The Imps Motorcycle Display Team, set against the backdrop of the historic Revesby park, the former home of famous botanist Sir Joseph Banks.

The team previously headlined the main ring back in 2014 and has performed across the world for millions of people, making show-stopping appearances at The Edinburgh Military Tattoo and on the BBC. The one-day show on Sunday 4th August 2019 will be championing the best local fayre, with the award-winning Fairburns Eggs, Lincolnshire Brewing Company and Redhill Farm already confirmed to be there, as well as Oslinc, Gelston Lamb and Rosie’s Country Kitchen. Lincolnshire’s celebrity chef Rachel Green will also be making a special appearance.

Daring displays and the ‘money saving expert’ set feature at Lincolnshire Show

Events being held at the Showground and the tenth birthday of the Epic Centre, so we’re thrilled to be unveiling such exciting highlights.

The amazing RAF Falcons will be parachuting into this year’s Lincolnshire Show to wow the crowds with their daring aerial displays. The Falcons made a special appearance at last year’s Lincolnshire Show, which was themed around RAF 100, but they are back by popular demand to showcase their non-contact parachute demonstrations.

‘The Martin Lewis Money Show’ is also set to take a stall at the Show, offering visitors the chance to meet the financial guru and answer the questions from the public over the two days. Over the years Martin has saved the nation millions of pounds with his frank advice on energy switching, credit card debt and savings.

This year’s event, held on 19 and 20 June at the Lincolnshire Showground, will feature special celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society; the charity that organises the hugely popular county Show.

The two-day programme is packed full of events including a Dakota flypast, acrobatic stunts from the UK’s top freestyle motocross riders Broke FMX, the Shetland Pony Grand National, and performances from the Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue band.

Oslinc, Horncastle - Ostrich and tomato sausage The King of Sausages is back and this month Simon Ruddlesdin has thrown us a complete curve ball in his epic quest to find Lincolnshire’s best bangers in ‘Rate My Sausage’ with a banger made from ostrich meat courtesy of Oslinc.

We have written many, many reviews of pork sausages.

Sausages made of pig. This one is something entirely new and challenging for us. These bangers are full of bird. And the bird in question is ostrich.

According to the World Ostrich Association “Ostrich meat is a ‘red meat’ similar in colour and taste to beef. The meat from an ostrich comes from the leg, thigh, and back. An ostrich has no breast meat like the chicken and turkey. Even though ostrich meat tastes like beef, the ostrich does not have fat marbling in the meat like beef. Ostriches have fat, but it collects outside the muscles and is easily removed during processing. Therefore, the cuts of meat are very lean with very low fat content.”

So there you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth. Or ostrich’s beak.

Meridian Meats Louth – Best Lincolnshire Sausage

This month, Sausage Meister General, otherwise known as Simon Ruddlesdin, is revisiting an old favourite in his continual quest to find Lincolnshire’s best bangers in ‘Rate My Sausage’ with a trip to Meridian Meats of Louth.

If you have perused Rate My Sausage previously then you will probably already know the name Meridian Meats. They’ve progressed from a kitchen-based tiny operation, through many awards and prizes, into the town centre in Louth and are now a must-visit establishment. Headed by former ‘UK Young Butcher of The Year’, Jim Sutcliffe, I have never had a bad product from this shop, which is just what you would expect from a member of the elite butcher’s Q Guild.

Where To Find Them: Stroll along Eastgate in the lovely market town of Louth and you can’t miss them. Look for the little pigs dangling over the footpath and you’re there. Alternatively look for the metal banding set into the ground – this marks the passage of the zero degrees longitude meridian which gives the shop its name.

Stanwatch: There always seems to be a couple of knowledgeable and very helpful ladies beavering away at the front of the shop, serving customers with a lovely smile and good advice. Whenever I’ve visited the top man, Jim, has been grafting away toward the back, also more than willing to engage with the punters. Service here is exemplary.

Flavour: The flavour of Jim’s Best Lincs is full and well rounded, there’s a little less pepper here but there is added mace and nutmeg.

The seasoning blend is made in the shop rather than bought in as occurs at many places. As usual I asked for the exact recipe and as usual it was refused. The star turn in these sausages is the great light flavour of the local pork, which almost squeaks as you chew.

Texture: Really firm and extremely juicy. These sausages firm up so much in the frying pan. Very hearty sized chunks of rare breed pork abound and they simply ooze goodness when you press the fork down. The skins are natural and I loved them, however my breakfast partners thought they were slightly on the thick and tough side. Heathens.

Vital Statistics: Average weight uncooked = 68 grams. Average weight cooked = 62 grams. Meat content = 85 %. Really low amount of shrinkage, ensuring you really do get what you pay for. Fab. Value For Money: £3.44 for 6 sausages weighing 405 grams. This works out as £8.50 per kg and 57p per banger. We rate this as good value for money.

Table For Two

Sunday lunch at The Ferry Boat Expect the unexpected when you visit the Ferry Boat at Washingborough for the first time. A trip to the High Street pub is highly recommended and we believe you will be impressed by its combination of vintage village charm and city chic.

Arriving in its spacious car park the Ferry Boat looks like a thriving, well-maintained village pub complete with beautiful hanging baskets, so there is an expectation of a cosy, rustic interior.

But forget the chintz and nooks and crannies you might associate with a pub that dates back to 1625, instead, as you walk in the back entrance, the Ferry Boat has an opulent open space that would not be out of place on a trendy street in York or Leeds. The bar and decoration have a modern feel, despite the traditional style.

Indian oak tables, floral patterns and leather all reinforce this impression.

Manager Rosie Webster (no relation!) explained the extension had been built in the 1980s and was completely refurbished before being taken over by the Ever So Sensible Group who also own the Horse and Groom, Royal William IV and The Duke William in Bailgate which benefited from a £350,000 refurbishment in 2015.

After arriving at the spacious bar area and being welcomed by our server, Julia, we were promptly shown to our table, where a drinks order was taken and we were handed the menu for the day.

As tempting as the excellent selection of beers and lagers including Birra Moretti, Guinness Extra Cold, Staropramen, Doom Bar and Harry Sparrow, Aspall Cyder (to name but a few) all were, we opted for a bottle of Neptune Point Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, a lovely fruity and aromatic wine, ideally served with chicken or pork, which would compliment our dinner choices to come.

The pub’s menu regularly changes and the management’s ethos is to eat the seasons by producing menus that make the most of produce when it’s at its very best. They always source local produce wherever possible.

I chose salmon and dill fishcake for starters, which was delicious, served with a horseradish crème fraîche and fresh green salad and my dining partner was equally pleased with her choice of classic duck and orange pâté, served with crunchy griddled toast and salad with a balsamic glaze.

Our main courses were just as nice. We both opted for a traditional Sunday lunch. I chose lemon and thyme chicken

which comprised of a succulent whole chicken breast cooked on the bone with skin left on. My wife ordered slow roasted pork, which had been sliced into two thick portions and was served with delicious pork crackling.

Both roasts were served with generous portions of roast potatoes, creamy mash, stuffing, red cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower cheese, cabbage, baby carrots and Yorkshire pudding. Both colourful food mountains were a visual delight and were thankfully served on warm plates with piping hot thick gravy. So often, eateries serve their meals directly on cold plates, which ruins the overall result, but nothing was going to ruin this meal.

Despite the ‘Man versus Food’ sized portions of food, we both managed to clear our plates but our food babies prevented us from ordering pud which was a shame as there are few classics on the dessert list that were crying out to me including New York cheese cake, sticky toffee pudding and lemon meringue pie... maybe next time.

The Ferry Boat menu provides plenty of choice and a more than average range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options.

It is supplemented by special Sunday lunches, light bites and themed nights throughout the week, such as an extremely popular Burger Night. This had definitely caught my attention, but so did Pie and Pint Night.

Whatever the reason, we will definitely be heading out to the Ferry Boat again and wish the team continued success.

Changes in the law for landlords

Housing Law

Landlords may have been left feeling bewildered and a little anxious following recent changes in the law.

Provisions will also be made to simplify the court process and speed up possession proceedings. With burgeoning “generation rent” and the increase in demand for rented property, it is right to ensure greater security of tenure for good tenants.

Changes to the old Section 21 Notice came into force from 01st October 2015, introducing the Section 6a Notice and provisions preventing retaliatory evictions by landlords.

The outcome will probably be the end of “no fault eviction” notices, but with an overhaul of the present court system to help landlords legitimately regain possession.

The arrival of a Section 21 notice could force tenants out of their homes for no reason, traumatised and struggling to find anywhere to live, with only eight weeks to work out how to safeguard their future.

Many people approach the City Council for help with housing, due to the sheer cost of accessing the private rented sector. The Tenant Fees Bill 2017, which came into force on 01st June, has been welcomed by tenants and Local Authorities.

The aim of the new legislature was to simplify the notice procedure and remove confusion surrounding the correct notice period. A “Section 21” or “no fault notice” now has to be either served on the prescribed form 6a (which can be downloaded on the gov.uk website) or must be in substantially the same form ie contain the same information.

The Act puts a cap on deposits of up to five weeks’ rent. It also bans the charging of fees to tenants, or prospective tenants.

Tenants simply have to be given two clear months’ notice but the 6a cannot be served until after four months into the tenancy and if served during the term, must expire at the end of the tenancy.

The provisions will make a significant difference to tenants on lower incomes and protect them against those unscrupulous letting agents who have been charging extortionate fees.

However, the government has acknowledged that further changes will have to be made to stem the rising tide of homelessness. The main cause of homelessness in the private rented sector is the service of “no fault” notices.

Proposed changes to the law are currently under consultation.

The main changes are understood to be the removal of Section 21 notices and introduction of longer tenancies.

There are a few exceptions, such as charging for lost keys and landlords can request a refundable “holding deposit” of no more than a weeks’ rent.

Some of the losses may be passed on to landlords in the form of higher service fees from agents.

Lincolnshire Scotch Eggs by Sadie Hirst

Recipe

Scotch Eggs seem to have had a bit of a trendy makeover of late, with all manner of combinations to be found, in all sorts of “foodie” haunts, from festivals, funky street food markets to Michelin star restaurants.

Chefs have been getting very creative with this retro dish and I’m all for it, if it moves us away from the rather sad prepacked offerings that can be found up and down the land at every motorway service station.

A proper homemade traditional Scotch Egg, using good quality Lincolnshire sausage meat and local free -range eggs, is a thing of joy. Perfect picnic and adventure fodder for these warmer days and lighter nights.

This recipe calls for medium sized eggs, resulting in a Scotch Egg about the size of a tennis ball, which has got to be a bonus surely? They aren’t very quick to make, but none of the processes are particularly onerous and the result, I think, justifies that little bit of effort.

This recipe will make six “tennis ball” size Scotch Eggs. If possible, please try and use real Lincolnshire sausage meat from your local independent butcher and good quality local free -range eggs. It will make all the difference to the flavour and reward all your culinary efforts.

Divide sausage meat equally into six and flatten into patties.

• 6 Eggs, local free range, medium

Have three shallow bowls, first one for seasoned flour, second for two beaten eggs and last one for breadcrumbs. (Panko breadcrumbs give a lovely crunchy coating but use whichever you prefer).

• 1lb 5oz/ 600g Lincolnshire Sausage meat • 2 Tbsp Plain Flour, seasoned with a generous pinch salt and ground white pepper • 2 Eggs, beaten for crumbing Local, free range, medium

Coat the peeled hard-boiled eggs in seasoned flour, then gently form the sausage meat all around the egg. It’s easier to do this with latex gloves on or wet hands.

• 4oz/ 100 g Breadcrumbs of your choice (I used Japanese Panko breadcrumbs)

Coat again in the seasoned flour, then the egg and then breadcrumbs.

• 1 litre vegetable oil

Then coat again in egg and final second coat of breadcrumbs.

Pop on a tray and chill until ready to fry.

Method: Boil six eggs. I put eggs that are at room temperature into a pan of cold water, bring up to boil and then simmer for six minutes.

Run cold tap on them as soon as they are cooked to avoid black

Heat oil to 140°C in a pan large enough to take the oil and plenty of space to spare or use a suitable deep fat fryer.

Gently lower two eggs into the oil and fry for 12 minutes.

If necessary lower the temperature of the oil, you don’t

Whisky of the month: Tobermory 12 year old single malt whisky

Distilled

Once more we are crossing the water for this month’s distillery visit, to the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. The main town is Tobermory and it is here that we find the eponymous distillery, the only one on the island.

Tobermory Distillery was founded in 1798 by John Sinclair who saw a business opportunity and leased some land in an area known as Ledaig (“Safe haven” in Gaelic and pronounced Led-chick) to build a distillery. This makes it one of the oldest legitimate distilleries in Scotland. It was probably a wise move on his part, since the village had originally been founded in 1788 as a fishing port but the scheme foundered; however, whisky always has a market!

The distillery was originally named Ledaig and, as was usual in the nineteenth century, its whisky was heavily peated and smoky. It has had a fairly chequered career over the years and has several times been closed down, the longest period being 1930 – 1971. It has also had changes of name, being known at various times as both Tobermory and Ledaig Distillery.

During this period, Tobermory whisky was not available except for a small supply at the distillery, much to the disappointment of its many fans. However, the good news is that it has now re-opened and Tobermory whisky is back on the shelves. The original core of the range was a 10 year old, but that has now been replaced by a 12 year old. It is a pale gold colour with a fruity nose of fresh orchard fruits, ripe barley and a touch of cinnamon pastry. The mouth is very malty, slightly oily and with a full flavour of fresh fruit. The finish is quite short with orange zest and toffee.

Finally in the 1990s they shook themselves out and went firm in their naming policy. Tobermory Distillery now produces two very different styles of whisky; an unpeated single malt called Tobermory and a heavily peated one called Ledaig. They are unchill filtered and of natural colour. There are a number of special releases of both versions produced, although many are available only from the distillery shop.

Mull is a beautiful island to visit, with much to see. The distillery visitors centre has a range of tours to suit every pocket (and level of interest), whilst visitors of a certain age may have a sense of déjà vu when landing at the port of Tobermory – it was used as the set for filming the popular early-2000s children’s programme, Balamory!

Entries open for 12th Spires and Steeples Challenge

This year the Spires and Steeples Challenge will take place on Sunday 13 October and is a real test for runners and walkers over a full or half marathon distance.

The ethos and format of the challenge remain the same but with a couple of little added extras to look forward to including the introduction of a bib timing system to better track participants progress and for those wishing to keep a record of their times.

This year’s challenge is organised by North Kesteven District Council’s new leisure provider Better. Better is the consumer facing brand of GLL, the UK’s leading leisure charitable social enterprise who provide access to quality community health and fitness facilities.

Starting in Lincoln (or Metheringham for the 13 mile option), the challenge follows the Spires and Steeples Arts and Heritage Trail which winds through the villages and beautiful countryside of North Kesteven finishing on Eastgate Green in Sleaford.

“This event brings the community together” says Donna Sutton, Events Manager for Better in North Kesteven. “We have people take part from all over the county not to mention the UK but it’s great to see everyone supporting each other along the way whether they know each other or not. That’s what makes the challenge what it is.”
