A Season to Celebrate Those We Love and Remember and Honor Those Lost

As we make our way through spring and into summer, we find ourselves celebrating those important people in our lives, and honoring those who sacrificed their lives for us.

Mother’s Day, always held the second Sunday in May, is May 14 this year, while Father’s Day is June 18, the third Sunday of June. These days are set aside for us all to take the time to truly reflect back on all our parents, or guardians, have done for us—and continue to do. Motherhood and fatherhood can feel like thankless callings at times, but know that your role is so important in your child’s life, and you are raising those who will lead others one day—whether families of their own, a business, a nonprofit. The sky’s the limit, and it starts at home.

On Monday, May 29, we honor and remember those who lost their lives serving our nation in order to keep this place we call home a land of the free. Our families, our communities, our nation, will forever be indebted to those

Natural stone, brick and various forms of concrete have been used as building materials for thousands of years. As a natural element, stone can lower your heart rate and elicit a sense of peace. The symmetrical lines of brickwork are both artistic and grounding. Concrete brings versatility and unique architectural elements while giving spaces a minimalist, urban-industrial vibe.

Materials like brick, stone and concrete are great options to add texture to a dated or dull area when updating your home’s aesthetic. Deciding which material is right for you depends on your home, project and budget. Here’s everything you need to know when choosing which option is best for your home.

Natural Stone

From the Egyptian pyramids to the Roman Colosseum and the Washington Monument, humans have used stone to build durable, elegant structures for centuries. As a building material, stone is fire resistant, long lasting,

and able to withstand nature’s elements. As a natural resource, stone connects us to the earth, while the unique beauty and various colors, shapes and sizes of each stone allow for artistic flexibility.

While images of quaint English stone cottages might come to mind, adding stone to a fireplace or as an exterior accent may be a more manageable approach—unless you have the urge to start knocking down walls. Using brick as a primary structural building material should be considered at the time of construction and completed by a professional brick mason. Between the added steps in the brick production process, the heaviness and subsequent transportation difficulty, and the need for professional installation, including brick as

an accent is often a more feasible option. Like stone, a brick veneer is often used for aesthetics rather than structural support. Though not as durable as solid brick, brick veneer is better at keeping moisture away from the exterior wall and tends to last decades longer than traditional siding.

Concrete

Using concrete as a building material is nothing new; in fact, Thomas Edison designed and built the first concrete homes in 1908. Due to the strength, durability and fire resistance, Edison predicted a boost in homes built with concrete. Over 100 years later, homes constructed with concrete are known to have many benefits, including being more energy-efficient, better at controlling temperature fluctuations, minimizing noise, and economically valuable. Concrete-style homes are also the epitome of modern minimalistic design.

The decision to build an entire house with concrete is one to be made prior to construction, but incorporating concrete in different aspects of your home has increased in popularity.

There’s something about the sun’s direction and intensity as we head into early summer that shines a spotlight on even the slightest hint of drabness. Updating the paint colors in your home is a relatively quick way to make a huge impact on how your house looks and feels. Modern Minimalist

Minimalist styles begin on a neutral foundation, but they’re not limited to shades of white. Natural hues found in wood and stone are a great place to start when considering minimalist colors for the interior or exterior of your home. A neutral base color, such as Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl (2137-60) with White Dove (OC-17) trim, allows you to easily incorporate other pops of color. Add Hale Navy (HC -154) for the kitchen island or monochromatic office and Chelsea Gray (HC-168) for powder room cabinets or to coordinate with brick on your exterior.

Earthy and Grounded

When it comes to Earth tones, gone are the days of dull browns and brassy beiges. Shades like Benjamin Moore’s Baked Terracotta (#1202) in the dining room or on lower kitchen cabinets add color while exuding a feeling of warmth and groundedness. A neutral beige like Manchester Tan (HC-81) as a flow color ties in the terracotta with an emerald sage such as Peale Green (HC-121) in the office. Finish this palette with Sherwin Williams’ White Flour (SW7102) trim and an accent color, such as Warm Brownie (2101-30) for a cohesive wholehouse color palette.

Warm and Inviting

Traditional colors representing warmth are dark, saturated hues in the red, orange, gold or brown family, but the deepest shades of cool colors can be very comforting. Entryway walls painted with Benjamin Moore’s Yellowstone (HC-10) with Cotton Balls (OC-122) wainscoting invites people in. Adding America’s Heartland (#197) as a flow color extends the warmth from the entry and ties in Nightshade (2116-10) on the kitchen island. Racoon Hollow (#978) in the bathroom or office pulls the interior look together but is also a versatile exterior color option.

Vibrant and Lively

After several years of cool color trends, vibrant colors are making a big comeback. Benjamin Moore’s 2023 color of the year, Raspberry Blush (2008-30), is a bold statement color that energizes a room or front door. Include other rich colors like their Wenge (AF-180) for a moody bathroom or exterior accent color and North Sea Green (2053-30) in the formal dining room for a more balanced feeling. Coupling Stone Harbor (2111-50) for the flow walls or main exterior paint and White Heron (OC-57) for trim helps highlight the vibrant colors without making them seem overwhelming.

Calm and Relaxing

Hues of green can reduce anxiety, invite harmony and bring the serenity of nature indoors. A fresh green/blue/gray shade like Benjamin Moore’s Hollingsworth Green (HC-141) on lower kitchen cabinets radiates relaxation while adding a deep green like Sherwin Williams’ Billiard Green (SW 0016) in the office or powder room is reminiscent of a peaceful rainforest retreat. Warm white colors like Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee (OC-45) on the walls and crisp white Chantilly Lace (OC-65) on the trim paired with soft charcoal Wrought Iron (212410) accents complement the interior green shades and highlight the colors of nature when used on the exterior.

Classic and Timeless

Finding a color palette that can transcend time and bringing in color with furniture, art or wallpaper is always in style. Sherwin Williams’ neutral greige shades like Agreeable Gray (SW 7029) for walls or cabinets and Pure White (SW 7005) on trim are versatile options that coordinate well with warm or cool tones. A monochrome design in Dovetail (SW 7018) for the dining or powder room adds elegance, while a chameleon hue, like Seasalt (SW 6204), adds depth by appearing to change color depending on the light. Finish this palette with Iron Ore (SW 7069) interior accents or as a dramatic exterior color.

Buyers Enter Back into the Market!

Spring has sprung, and buyers are feeling the heat!

Spring is seasonally the beginning of an active market here locally, and this year appears to be no different. Open house traffic has exceeded years past for a second month in a row, proving that our spring market is finally here! While it may look a little different than past spring markets, we shouldn’t be surprised. This past year has been temperamental, filled with rate hikes, inflation at record highs, and a constant murmur of a recession.

But we are here with some good news!

The Northwest Multiple Listing Service reported 7,904 new listings for March. This means we are still very much dealing with inventory woes; however, new listings have doubled from February to March. This surge is making buyers get off their computer search and into the open houses!

Even with the added new listings, that is only six weeks of inventory on an absorption rate. We believe this trend will carry us through the summer (a normal market carries six months of inventory). Something unusual about today’s market is low inventory typically drives up prices; however, home sellers are hesitant to jeopardize their current low-interest rate to purchase and replace with a new mortgage at the highest interest rate in the past 23 years. This hesitance is keeping the supply low, yet the high rates are keeping prices stable but not increasing. For those who are entering back into the market, we are seeing an interesting return on bridge loans and home equity loans. Buyers are securing their new home before selling their current—and using large levels of equity to do so successfully.

The key to success in this “swing” market is appropriately pricing your home. The homes that are priced right are resulting in the pending sales being up from February by 14.5 percent. Wellpriced homes are generating multiple offers, while overpriced homes are sitting and getting stale. The days of throwing out any old high number is gone for now.

Our market continues to be infiltrated by out-of-state buyers feeding the tech and medical industries. If a real estate move is in your future, avoid sitting this one out. We have a feeling it is going to heat up again as soon as rates stabilize.

Make sure to have a good representative by your side to guide you through this swift “swing” market. Once rates and inflation are under control, the handcuffs will come off, giving buyers a small window of opportunity before things possibly get crazy again.

School Expansion

Popular nonprofit school expands in order to serve more students

Early childhood education gives children the foundation they need for long-term success in learning and life. However, preschools often have extensive waitlists, and the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation’s (GGHF) Curious by Nature School was no exception. Their nature-based STEM program with a 100 percent outdoor curriculum is in high demand, with dozens of waitlisted students. When the opportunity came to purchase a second property and serve more students, the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation jumped into action.

“After careful review of the purpose designed building and appurtenant 3.5 acres of mostly forested lands along the salmon-bearing Crescent Creek, and evaluation of the business plan developed for the proposed acquisition, while a big decision, it was an easy one for the 11 member GGHF’s Board of Directors,” states Dr. Julie Ann Gustanski, CEO and president emeritus of the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation.

dedicated to bringing impactful resources to the greater peninsula community. The CBNS does that through childhood education, enrichment programs for homeschooled students, and summer camps for children ages 5 to 10. Their one-of-a-kind nature-based early childhood program supports kids’ exploration and discovery of our native environment. Students go outside every day, rain or shine, and learn about seasons, plants, animals, ecosystems, habitats, people, cultures and more.

Serving More Local Students

The school’s first location off Wagner Way was at maximum capacity with more than 30 students on the waitlist—some since 2021. The community-focused GGHF planned to expand the Curious by Nature School, but various obstacles kept postponing that plan. That is until late 2022, when a preschool in the Crescent Valley

area closed their doors and presented GGHF with the opportunity to purchase the property—a 4,780 squarefoot building on 3.52 acres, already built and zoned for early childhood education. Dr. Gustanski recalls, “When I received an email from the owner of the former Arcadia Montessori School, I called her immediately.”

The new campus officially opened on February 2, 2023, and will serve an additional 60 students.

Odette Alina, executive director at the Curious by Nature School, explains that transitioning some existing students and veteran teachers from the Wagner Way campus to the Crescent Valley campus allowed for new programs to be opened at both locations. It also offers more flexibility to families to choose which campus was more convenient for them.

“With the school’s expansion, we were delighted to welcome families from the waitlist to our spring and fall programs, and we’re excited to offer early education and the opportunity to experience the wonder and joy of learning in an outdoor environment to even more children across several communities.”

Crescent Valley Campus

Easily accessible from Crescent Valley Drive, the new campus is a picturesque image of Pacific Northwest living. A quaint red building is filled with art and supplies, books, a mini-indoor greenhouse, specimen jars and microscopes used to examine findings of their daily explorations.

“It’s truly magical to have the opportunity to explore and have open-ended play,” shares Deborah Toney, head teacher. “We are able to offer real-world learning and cater our curriculum to mirror what’s going on outside—which is very engaging for kids. I’ve been teaching in the classroom for 10 years, but this is a step above to do it in real life.”

Walk outside and you’ll find a butterfly statue where a homeschool enrichment class has planted butterfly-attracting plant seeds. Next to the ADA-friendly entrance is a garden bed, and behind the building is a private wooded area of various native trees and plants, with exploration trails backing up to Crescent Creek. Students are encouraged to dig, get dirty, and ask questions as they investigate.

“We brought the enrichment (homeschool) program to the new campus, and now we can expand that program. Right now they’re studying and exploring the nooks and crannies of the forested area to think critically about ways to use the space without disrupting the native plants,” says Nikki Gant, CBNS teacher.

The proximity to Crescent Creek also offers new possibilities for students. Students recently raised salmon in a tank in the classroom. They tested ammonia and nitrate levels of the water and watched as the eggs grew into salmon chum. Once ready, the chum were released into Crescent Creek, which naturally flows into the harbor and Puget Sound.

The relationship between the Curious by Nature School with the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation is unique in that both are nonprofit organizations designed to benefit the whole community. The GGHF has five core areas of focus within its mission: arts and culture, education, the environment, recreation, and social capital. Everything from the school’s indoor/outdoor classrooms and the holistic learning environment to the expansion itself is aimed at benefiting our community.

Library Specialist and Author Goodman Middle School

Jen Nielsen is the library specialist at Goodman Middle School, teaching sixth through eighth grade. Simply put, Jennifer is a librarian. However, the title library specialist seems to better encompass her responsibilities to her students, as well as to the greater school district.

Jen earned her master’s in education in 2004, previously working as a mental health specialist. Once she completed her masters, she would go on to teach English and social studies all over the country. But it was her passion for books and literature, as well as the individual attention she is able to give to students, that turned her focus toward being a full-time librarian.

Jen is currently focusing on Information Literacy, which is teaching students to navigate the wide world of information to find relevant information for their focus or interest. Her other responsibilities include interacting personally with students to find characters and stories that inspire them, making sure students have working apps and devices, repairing old books and acquiring new books. In her work, she is able to interact with students of all grades and backgrounds! She is so proud of her students and actively encourages their aspirations for writing, learning and connecting.

Under her mentorship, students have started their own book club, and several are attending the Cavalcade of Authors Young Writers Conference in May. The minds of students only expand where information is

In her free time, Jen, of course, enjoys a lot of reading and likes to keep up with new authors and award winners. She also writes and recently published a book entitled The Claiming—“An apprentice mage. A faerie princess. And one slight miscalculation.” When outside the classroom, she can be found wearing her “author’s hat” (as Jen dubbed it), where she attends book signings, edits and revises her work, or works on drafting the next manuscript. If ever she gets downtime, she spends it with her family skiing, hiking, biking, boating, or catching a game of pickleball. She loves to be outside with the people she loves most.

Jasmine Amelia Grace Lopez is a 17year-old senior at Gig Harbor High School. It is close to the end of the year, but she’s not quite decided on where she’ll go to school after graduation. She has applied to many different universities, and because of her good grades she has been accepted to all of them. She’s stuck deciding between two schools: Linfield University and Whitworth University. They are both offering her equal amounts of financial aid, and she will be making her decision in the coming months based on whichever school is able to offer her the most opportunity.

She may not have quite decided on where she’ll go next, but Jasmine is absolutely sure what she’ll do next. She plans to go to school for nursing and be a traveling nurse starting right after graduation. She has been in and out of the hospital since childhood and has been directly impacted by her nurses. Jasmine wants to provide children with the same comfort that she was given.

Right now, though, she is very busy in school. Her English class offers college credit while she’s still on the high school campus, and she’s busy with her Passion Project. This is an active project in line with each student’s passion that brings about real-world change. Jasmine’s focus is on inspiring the elimination of racial discrimination. Her Passion Project is consistent with her actions throughout her high school career; she started the first Black Student Union in the Peninsula School District as a place of refuge for students of color experiencing racial slurs and hate speech and to allow these students a voice.

Jasmine is also the student board representative for Gig Harbor High School. She uses this position as an opportunity to advocate for her classmates; to make sure that her school environment is one that benefits everyone. “Before I start doing something at school, I ask myself, ‘How will this impact current and future students? Will this make a lasting impact on students’ lives?’”

When Jasmine isn’t advocating or shooting for the stars, she’s expressing her emotion through art. She especially loves doing portraits of her favorite musicians or creating pieces for others. Art for her is an act of love. Going forward, she will carry this love with her.

Evanté Heming is a 19-year-old senior at Peninsula High School. Evanté is nearing the end of his final year of high school, which means graduation! And his plans for the future are well underway.

Evanté is currently focusing on his school work, with all the tests and such that require his attention before he moves forward. Performing also consumes a lot of his time, both during and after school, as he is very involved in band and theater. He made state in solo and ensemble and recently performed at CWU (Central Washington University). It goes without saying that performance art requires hours and hours of consistent practice to ensure a smooth performance, and that can be a lot on top of everything else.

Creative expression through music and theater falls in line with Evanté’s plans for the future. “I am interested in taking on a career as a music educator and eventually

becoming involved in music production and performance,” he shared. To achieve this, he will spend his first two years at Tacoma Community College, which will allow him to stay close to home and save money. From there he will transfer to a public university in sunny Florida to complete his four-year degree.

In addition to his performance art class, Evanté enjoys history, as he loves learning about the world and the events that make up its past. Aside from all his responsibilities at school, and his extracurricular activities, Evanté is also hard at work at the Tom Taylor YMCA in the Child Watch Department. When not in school, performing or at work, you will find him singing, reading, writing, and creating art. In all this he is supported by his teachers and school. Most importantly, he is supported by his family.

When asked which teacher was most inspirational to him, he is quick to respond that his mom is his favorite teacher. She taught him in the third grade, when he was in foster care. After she and her family adopted him, his third-grade teacher became his mom. She is now his lifelong teacher and role model.

With the love and support of his family, Evanté feels confident moving forward in the exploration of his art.

A look at motherhood in today’s world

In some ways, the challenges of motherhood are the same as the many women who have labored before us. All mothers have felt the sacrifice of motherhood in her body, through her body, and from her body. We have all fought to recover what it means to be both an individual and a plural. Every mother has felt both her child’s pain and joy as if it were her own. Every mother has felt the pull of that first cry.

But every generation of mothers also has its own unique struggles. We struggle with what it means to protect, encourage and bolster our children to be thriving adults in this current environment. We make different decisions and take advantage of new opportunities. Today’s moms have more opportunities to pursue avenues not available to our foremothers. We are moms, yes, but we are also women pushing boundaries in a culture whose societal rules have yet to catch up with our ventures. We are showing our children what is possible.

One such modern woman is Annalee Baimbridge. She began her career in the Air Force, where she met her husband Brandon. Together they share custody of Brandon’s son but eventually decided

it would be a blessing to add another member to the family. After 16 years, Annalee left the Air Force for a job as an airline pilot with FedEx. It wasn’t soon after that she joyfully became pregnant with their daughter. She continued to work and pilot right up until three weeks before the baby was born. Since there was no family leave available, she combined her sick leave and vacation time to take six months off. She used that time to heal, adjust to the addition of a new baby and breastfeed.

As the time approached to go back to work, she steeled herself for having to spend long blocks of time away from home (and home for large chunks of time). She instructed her niece on the care of her daughter, who would also be the nanny while she was gone. “It takes a village,” says Annalee. “If anyone besides my niece was watching her, I would have turned around and gone home.” Thankfully, Annalee had the support she needed—both from her husband, who would adjust his schedule while she was gone, and her niece. She had her village. She was ready to go. Now to figure out the logistics of breastfeeding while flying all over the world.

THERE HAVE BEEN MANY TIMES WHERE SHE’S HAD TO ADVOCATE FOR HERSELF

and the priorities of her family.

Annalee’s life when not working was pumping and catching the odd hours of sleep. Pump, fly, shower, pump, sleep, fly, eat, pump, eat, fly, sleep … again and again. One of her first trips back on the job from her time at home was a flight to Paris. While in France, she continued to pump on her regular schedule but was informed that she wouldn’t be able to get back through Paris airport security. There would be no liquids at all; breast milk was out. However, throwing away all that “liquid gold” was absolutely not an option. After asking around she found a loophole: She would be allowed to transport the breast milk with a doctor’s note. One of her fellow gentleman pilots (most all airline pilots are male), volunteered to fly for her to give her more time to get her doctor’s note. She had just barely got her note and flew the next flight. However, it ended up being a non-issue because the milk was frozen when they went through security. All that fight for nothing!

Now her daughter is 5 years old, and Annalee has a certain level of seniority at work. There have been many times where she’s had to advocate for herself and the priorities of her family. She shares a calendar with her husband, calls home often, and adjusts her schedule to ensure that she’s home during the important events and milestones—a feat that is much easier as her children continue to grow.

This modern mom has learned to balance everyone’s needs and aspirations, including her own, and relies on the support of those who see, listen and understand her. “I rely on my faith in God and am thankful for my husband, who is the foundation of support for our family,” says Annalee.

Today’s mother may look a little different. She may navigate new challenges and overcome new hurdles, but she’s not alone.

Saturday, June 3, the Maritime Gig Festival starts outside with a hearty pancake breakfast, located in Skansie Brothers Park, just after the parade. The pancakes will serve as fuel for the Family Fun Run and 5k, as well as the Kids Dash, on Judson Street. For some, it’s a brick house with a white picket fence, while others crave a low-maintenance condo in the city—either way, it’s likely you have more non-negotiables than you initially realize. As potential buyers start viewing homes, they can quickly get distracted by the beautiful countertops and professionally staged presentation. Relying on an imagined picture in your head can lead to overlooking

must-have features. There’s nothing worse than falling in love with a house only to remember later that you swore you’d never share a closet with your spouse again.

Make a list. Have each person involved in buying the home and who will be living in the home make a list of the features they most want and things they truly need. Then you can review the list—maybe drop the wall-towall trampoline room requested by your 7-year-old—and rank the features by importance. Doing this will help narrow down properties during your search and keep you focused as you visit potential properties.

“Location, location, location” is a common phrase in real estate. Besides being in an area where you want to live, the location is also directly linked to the current and future home value. The features that determine what constitutes a good location differ for each home buyer, but there are some generally accepted objective factors to consider. The location determines which schools your children will attend, how long your commute to work will be, and which community you will be involved with daily. “Do your homework and work with an agent who is an expert in your target area,” recommends Jackie.

Researching an area and working with a knowledgeable Realtor also helps when evaluating neighborhoods. Take a walk in the neighborhood and talk to people who live there. This will help you get a feel for the mood of a neighborhood but can also provide invaluable insight into real-time issues or benefits of the neighborhood.

Another factor to consider are the future plans for the area. New construction neighborhoods are popping up all over—depending on your needs, you may want to hold out for one of the new builds, or you might not want to buy right next to a future construction site. You should also consider the crime in the area, if there are any benefits such as recreation facilities, and if there are HOA dues that will affect your monthly payment.

Remember, your location also includes the lot on which the home stands. You can remodel and renovate a house to your every specification, but the lot will remain the same. Consider the lot location and size carefully when viewing homes. Does it get enough sunlight? Will the driveway be difficult to navigate when it snows? Is the yard large enough for your kids and dog to run around? Are you prepared for the amount of maintenance needed for this size yard? If anything about the location or the lot seems concerning or feels like a compromise to you, don’t hesitate to walk away. It will be easier to find another property in a better location or lot than to live with frustrations that could’ve been avoided.

Know your budget and the market. While this sounds simple enough, it can be a complex process. You need a clear picture of your finances to determine a down payment amount and the maximum mortgage payment you can afford. Your real estate team can help review various mortgage payment scenarios and point out sleeper costs, including HOA dues, homeowner’s insurance, and property taxes. “Home buyers need to have all their documents in order

and hire a solid team to help them purchase a home. This team will consist of a local, full-time real estate professional, a full-time knowledgeable lender, and expert local vendors,” explains Ben.

The market, interest rates and inventory have been rapidly changing over the past few years, but real estate is cyclical. Depending on your circumstances, now might be a great time for you to buy, but not ideal for others. As Jennifer explains, “This market is healthy, but rates are high. … If you have substantial equity in your home, now is a great time to buy, and there are a lot of options available that you wouldn’t be able to capitalize on when the market is hot.”

Summer camps can be a great option for kids of all ages and interests. There are a variety of camps available, from traditional day and overnight camps to specialized camps focused on specific activities like sports, arts or technology. Many of these camps also offer specialized programs for children with special needs or those looking for a unique experience, like wilderness camps or adventure camps. If your child is interested in sports, there are a variety of summer programs available that can help them improve their skills and stay active. OVERCOMING TRUST BARRIERS IN DIVORCE SETTLEMENTS

When meeting with a newly separating couple at the onset of their divorce mediation, I often ask them the following: “On a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being the least trusting and 10 being the most trusting, how would you describe your level of trust with the other person?”

If infidelity in the marriage was present, the other party very often opens with this: “My spouse had an affair, so I don’t think I can trust them to be truthful with anything now. I’m not sure mediation will work.”

However, rather than allow the parties to accept defeat at the outset, I learned a long time ago in my practice to always include another caveat on the trust scale. I ask them to describe their level of trust to specific areas of their relationship, as opposed to one overall label. Those areas include financial, such as bill paying, accumulation of assets and debts, and disclosure of relevant information pertaining to finances.

I also ask about their level of trust with respect to parenting. How do they feel about the other parent’s ability to stick to a schedule, their timeliness and ability to reliably get a child to school or an activity, and their ability to refrain from alcohol or other substance abuse when with the children?

Not surprisingly, many of these couples report very high levels of trust in their co-parenting relationship, as well as high levels of trust regarding their money, even though the trust level for the intimate partnership aspects of their relationship may be slim to none. Once

we begin to unravel this “all or nothing thinking” by breaking down the various areas of their relationship into categories, the reluctant party can begin to feel more confident about how mediation can succeed.

Measuring trust is a great illustration of the creative use of divorce mediation. It opens the door to gradually rebuilding overall trust, as each party feels safer to more openly negotiate their issues to get to settlement, while helping each party push through their respective vulnerabilities that might be holding them back. The process certainly takes time, patience and accountability, but small wins along the way can help launch both parties to get to an outcome they can feel good about. (A side benefit: The parties can do all this without resorting to telling their stories in publicly accessible court documents.)

Granted, in the words of the wise Lady Gaga, “Trust is like a mirror, you can fix it if it’s broken, but you can still see the crack in that reflection.” The goal in mediation is to normalize the complicated emotions following an affair that leads to a divorce, while not letting them interfere with the practical and common-sense decisions that need to be handled to help each party feel less broken as they begin their next chapter.

What You Should Know

Same-sex marriages are legal nationwide, and these marriages enjoy the same rights and benefits bestowed by state and federal law on traditional marriages. As a legally married same-sex spouse, you’ll want to be aware of several retirement plan rules that apply specifically to married individuals.

Beneficiary rights

If you participate in a 401(k) or similar plan at work, federal law provides that your spouse is automatically the beneficiary of your account in the event of your death. You can name someone else as beneficiary, but only if your spouse agrees in writing.

IRAs aren’t subject to this federal law, although your state may impose its own similar requirements.

Even without a requirement that you do so, naming your spouse as beneficiary is often the best choice. One reason is that a spouse beneficiary has more options and flexibility in terms of post-death distributions than a non-spouse beneficiary. For example, spouse beneficiaries generally may take required distributions from employer plans and IRAs at a later date, and over a longer period of time, than non-spouse beneficiaries.

Your surviving spouse may also have two other options that are not available to other beneficiaries. First, your surviving spouse may choose to roll over inherited IRA or plan funds to his or her own IRA or plan. Second, your surviving spouse may elect to simply leave the funds in an inherited IRA and treat that account as his or her own account. In either case, the potential may exist for significant

estate planning and income tax benefits. This is because your surviving spouse may defer taking distributions of the inherited funds until his or her own required beginning date and may also designate new beneficiaries of his or her choice (your children, for example).

Your right to a qualified domestic relations order

While we all hope our marriages will last forever, unfortunately that’s not always the case. The issue of how retirement plan benefits will be handled in the event of a divorce is especially critical for spouses who may have little or no retirement savings of their own.

Under federal law, employer retirement plan benefits generally can’t be assigned to someone else. However, one important exception to this rule is for “qualified domestic relations orders,” commonly known as QDROs. If you and your spouse divorce, you can seek a state court order awarding you all or part of your spouse’s retirement plan benefit. Your spouse’s plan is required to follow the terms of any order that meets the federal QDRO requirements. For example, you could be awarded all or part of your spouse’s 401(k) plan benefit as of a certain date, or all or part of your spouse’s pension plan benefit. There are several ways to divide benefits, so it’s very important to hire an attorney who has experience negotiating and drafting QDROs. The key takeaway here is that these rules exist for your benefit. Be sure your divorce attorney is aware of them.

Why overfat, not obesity, is the real concern

Excess body fat is associated with a wide range of cardiometabolic disorders, as well as most non-infectious chronic diseases.

The traditional measure of body composition, Body Mass Index (obesity defined as BMI > 30), however, is notoriously unreliable, as 30 percent of individuals with “healthy” BMIs are found to be metabolically unhealthy. BMI typically underestimates body fat content, and individuals with large muscle mass are often inappropriately categorized as obese.

What is “overfat”?

The presence of excess body fat is more properly defined as “overfat,” which includes the presence of at least one additional risk factor of impaired cardiometabolic or physical health. Excess body fat is measured by increased body fat percentage or waist circumference.

Downstream metabolic consequences of excess body fat are related to chronic inflammation and insulin resistance, such as abnormal glucose, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and dementia. Some of the negative effects on physical health include low back pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and reduced productivity.

On the other extreme, underfat is also a relevant problem. In addition to starvationrelated malnutrition, underfat is also prevalent in chronic illness and in eating disorders.

The majority of people are overfat.

It was estimated in 2017 that 91 percent of American adults could be classified as overfat, along with 69 percent of children. Excess body fat in childhood also is a significant risk for overfat status later in life and development of chronic disease. Sadly, and largely due to this overfat pandemic, children now have a lower life expectancy than their parents.

Is “overfat” insensitive?

With the negative stigma in our culture over terminology about excess body fat, in recent years, the health care community has avoided using the term “obese” in favor of euphemisms such as “unhealthy weight.” It turns out, however, that the term “obese” is only more upsetting for non-obese patients, whereas obese patients find the euphemism more upsetting.

Focus on the real issue.

Terminology such as “overweight” can be misleading, due to the fact that it draws attention away from the real cause of disease, focusing on weight rather than fat. Thus, people may believe that weight loss, rather than specifically fat loss, will improve their health.

In order to solve a problem, one must first understand what matters. Weight is mostly irrelevant, whereas fat content is what’s driving chronic disease.

Bottom line: Measure what matters.

In theory, our eyes work perfectly as a team, pointing together seamlessly at the object you are looking at, each sending identical information to the brain allowing you to see one clear image. Nerves control the six eye muscles and the eye movements, causing them to move in sync together. What happens if they DON’T work together well? If one eye is pointing in a slightly different direction? One eye could be pointing up or down, in or out, so instead of receiving the same info from each eye, the brain receives two disparate images. This confuses the brain, causing the six eye muscles to have to work overtime to relieve the stress on the brain and to keep the brain from seeing two images.

The muscle strain leads to a multitude of symptoms including anxiety, dizziness, difficulty driving, learning and reading issues, and poor concentration. These are mistakenly attributed to being caused by psychiatric issues, traumatic brain injury, dyslexia, MS, or even stroke, rather than the eyes. The patient is mislabeled or put on medications that are not treating the root cause.

I have just described binocular vision dysfunction (BVD), a condition where the eyes don’t work together as a team, and it is estimated 20 percent of the population suffers from it. That is a HUGE number of undiagnosed patients suffering, in pain, unable to drive or do well in school.

The most common symptoms of BVD are headaches or migraines. They often occur in the forehead, temples, or back of the head, are worse in the afternoon or after school, and can occur in all ages. Patients find some solace on the weekends, as there is less need to focus on near work, which requires even more muscle control and concentration. They also seek relief in other ways, most often with drugs, whether pills or injections. Neurologists and headache doctors recommend MRIs to make sure there is nothing scarier involved. They might recommend acupuncture, meditation, and other nonstandard ways to alleviate the pain, all of which cost thousands of dollars and take hours and days away from the patient.

Occasionally an optometrist may be sought to check for a visual component. However, binocular vision dysfunction is not found at a regular vision exam and instead requires detailed testing by a neuro-visual specialist. The patient first takes a questionnaire to check all aspects of symptoms, the neurovisual specialist takes a detailed history, checks external and internal health, takes many measurements to check for an eye muscle imbalance, then prescribes prism-aligning glasses.

WHAT OYSTERS CAN TEACH US ABOUT LIFE

No grit, no pearl!

Recently, I was enjoying some scrumptious oysters in a curry broth. Unexpectedly, I encountered a granule of sand … and everything came to a screeching halt!

Instead of refocusing on savoring the flavors, I hyper-focused on the sand and negatively labeled my entire experience! Have you had a similar “all-or-nothing” reaction to a situation? I laughed at myself; yet, it also got me thinking about oysters, and what we can learn from their resilience.

Did you know an oyster coats an irritant (the sand) with thousands of layers of nacre (mother of pearl), and slowly over time, a strong, resilient and iridescent pearl begins to form? What if we treated life’s situations like an oyster does; just an irritant to calmly face and work through?

Follow these three steps to discover your pearl:

1. Find Your Grit. Grit means strength of character or perseverance forged through facing “irritants.” Start by taking a moment to visualize a situation, curiously and neutrally, as your own pearl being made. It can take the charge out of the fear or anxiety you have toward a situation. It also helps you realize you can handle it.

2. Respond vs. React. An event happens and you can choose how to respond. You choose

to “coat” (acknowledge) it and mindfully observe your thoughts/feelings that come up. Instead of reacting by throwing a tantrum, disrespecting someone, or with worry (based on assumptions, unvoiced expectations, or past patterns), you respond by neutrally and curiously acknowledging the situation. This influences your perception of the outcome and future actions.

3. Face It. Build your “iridescent” resilience by neutrally facing the situation, followed by curiously asking what you can do to address/ resolve it. Then take it a step further and see if you can lean into, and face, a situation with curious excitement and a “Let’s do this!” attitude.

The reality is there will always be “irritants” in our lives. Think about amazing or key events in your life. In order to experience them, you likely had some challenges to face. Doing so made the outcome more enjoyable and memorable.

These steps empower us to handle a situation or obstacle like an oyster (just a tiny “irritant”), an opportunity to learn and grow, keep a more balanced perspective, and make it easier to move forward in a productive and creative way.

A Place for Families, Community, Comradery ... and Golf!

Do you ever walk into a place that feels like home? That’s what Gig Harbor Golf Club is for every member.

Gig Harbor Golf Club (GHGC) is more than just a pristine 9-hole golf course that highlights the best parts of the Pacific Northwest. With its towering evergreen trees, views of Mount Rainier, and the occasional wildlife spotting, the course has become a second home for its members. Welcoming both young and old, the club’s various year-round social events further strengthen the ties amongst its members.

The golf course was constructed in tranquil Artondale by fishermen, businessmen and other community leaders in 1954. They were seeking a place to socialize and golf. In 1961, the course was opened on its current 65-acre location. The membership has continued the club’s goal of growing and reinvesting back into the facility.

In 2021, the current Director of Golf Operations, Jake Gregus, was hired. Under his direction, the course has undergone major improvements, including adding a covered bay for the driving range, remodeling the original club house, expanded patio to include a family size fire pit, and resurfacing the driveway and cart paths. The Proshop was recently remodeled and now includes golf attire, hard goods, and a golf simulator for lessons and general practice.

In 2023, members approved new and upgraded course equipment, remodeled tee boxes and a refreshing new look to the members’ bar. Plans are in the making for a redesigned practice area—expanding both the chipping and putting greens—along with enhancements to the course entryway, slated for 2024.

One of the most celebrated upgrades to the club is the redecorated event space within the club house. The remodeled space offers a warm and inviting atmosphere for families to come together. It’s created a meeting point for families to celebrate their children—from first birthdays to high school graduations, weddings, and every other milestone in between.

Orchestrating these milestone events in the members’ lives, you’ll find Jackie Scothorne—the Club House Manager. She and her energetic hospitality team are always welcoming the members with a smile and a drink. Jackie organizes events that strengthen GHGC’s community and highlights that the club is more than just a place to golf. Members meet up for steak nights, card games, trivia contests, billiards and corn hole games. She provides hospitality support to the men’s and women’s club events. Kids get special visits from Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and Halloween goblins during the many holiday celebrations. The club hosts an annual Father’s Day fishing tournament for the children, served up with breakfast too. These GHGC community experiences have built GHGC into the family based organization it is today.

Members have access to private lessons from Troy Kelly, former PGA Tour player, and Jared Eacrett, assistant golf professional. Whether you’re a lifetime golfer or just starting out, Troy and Jared can help you develop your skills. Among the many group outings, Jared leads

the ladies in the summer at the weekly Sip and Chip—a hit in more ways than one. There is a plethora of junior golf opportunities from April to August—expert instruction designed to give your junior golfer a deep love for the game and the abilities to perform on the course. PGA Junior Academy is designed exclusively for kids from ages 7 to 17 years old. Instruction is given to develop the skills of golf, from beginner to advanced proficiency. Sushi at Home!

• Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Drain the rice and add it to a pot with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Cook for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water has been absorbed.

• While the rice is cooking, make the sushi vinegar by mixing together the rice vinegar, sugar

• Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and add the sushi vinegar. Use a wooden spoon or rice paddle to gently fold the vinegar into the rice until it’s well combined. Let the rice cool to room temperature.

• Place a sheet of nori seaweed on a bamboo sushi mat or a piece of plastic wrap. Wet your hands with cold water and grab a handful of rice. Spread the rice evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top edge.

• Add a few strips of fish, cucumber and avocado to the center of the rice. Use the bamboo mat or plastic wrap to roll the sushi tightly, tucking in the filling as you go. Press the sushi roll gently to make sure it’s compact and the filling is snugly packed.

• Repeat the process with the remaining ingredients, making three more sushi rolls.

• Use a sharp knife to slice each sushi roll into eight pieces. Serve the sushi with soy sauce, pickled ginger and wasabi on the side.

• Enjoy your homemade sushi!

Celebrate Mother’s Day weekend at the Spring Market & Festival

Spring is in full swing here in the harbor, which means there’s no better time to get outdoors and celebrate all this season has to offer. Mark your calendars for May 13 for a new market you won’t want to miss!

The Local Makers Spring Market & Festival, in partnership with the City of Gig Harbor, will make its debut just in time for Mother’s Day. From 10am to 3pm, the community is invited to gather together to celebrate spring and the immense creativity that can be found right here in Gig Harbor.

Held at Gig Harbor’s Civic Center Green (3510 Grandview Street), the Local Makers Spring Market & Festival will feature more than 50 local makers and artisans, as well as “minimakers” (youth entrepreneur makers) showcasing their skills. Discover the diverse array of handmade goods, everything from jewelry and pottery, to skin care, to baked goods—and, of course, a whole lot more!

In addition to the dozens of makers and artisans selling their goods, there will be local food and beverage vendors, DIY creative and pampering workshops, face painters, balloon artists, an aerial artist, and much more! Live music from local performers will fill the air throughout the event. And be sure to
