How can women bridge the retirement gap?

arch 8 is International Women’s Day, a day for celebrating all the accomplishments of women around the globe. But many women still need to make up ground in one key area: retirement security.

Women’s challenges in achieving a secure retirement are due to several factors, including these:

Pay gap – It’s smaller than it once was, but a wage gap still exists between men and women. In fact, women earn, on average, about 82 cents for every dollar that men earn, according to the Census Bureau. And even though this gap narrows considerably at higher educational levels, it’s still a source of concern. Women who earn less than men will likely contribute less to 401(k) plans and will ultimately see smaller Social Security checks.

• Longer lives – At age 65, women live, on average, about 20 more years, compared to almost 17 for men, according to the Social Security Administration. Those extra years mean extra expenses.

• Caregiving responsibilities – Traditionally, women have done much of the caregiving for young children and older parents. And while this caregiving is done with love, it also comes with financial sacrifice. Consider this: The average employment-related costs for mothers providing unpaid care is nearly $300,000 over a lifetime, according to the U.S. Department of Labor — which translates to a reduction of 15 percent of lifetime earnings. Furthermore, time away from the workforce results in fewer contributions to 401(k) and other employersponsored retirement plans.

Ultimately, these issues can leave women with a retirement security deficit. Here are some moves that can help close this gap:

• Contribute as much as possible to retirement plans. Try to contribute as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or similar employersponsored retirement plan. Your earnings can grow tax deferred, and your contributions can lower your taxable income. (With a Roth 401(k), contributions aren’t deductible, but earnings and withdrawals are tax free, provided you meet certain conditions.) At a minimum, contribute enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered, and try to boost your contributions whenever your salary goes up. If you don’t have access to a 401(k), but you have earned income, you can contribute to an IRA. Even if you don’t have earned income, but you have a spouse who does, you might be eligible to contribute to a spousal IRA.

• Maximize Social Security benefits. You can start taking Social Security at 62, but your monthly checks will be much bigger if you can afford to wait until your full retirement age, which will be around 66 ½. If you are married, you may want to coordinate your benefits with those of your spouse — in some cases, it makes sense for the spouse with the lower benefits to claim first, based on their earnings record, and apply for spousal benefits later, when the spouse with higher benefits begins to collect.

• Build an emergency fund. Try to build an emergency fund containing up to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid account. Having this fund available will help protect you from having to dip into your retirement accounts for large, unexpected costs, such as a major home or car repair.

It’s unfortunate, but women still must travel a more difficult road than men to reach retirement security. But making the right moves can help ease the journey.

Paul Reizen started his professional career in Japan, where he traveled to after graduating college. He spent close to four years there, eventually becoming the international marketing director for a large electronics company. In 2004, Paul graduated from law school and began working at the District Attorney’s Office as a prosecutor, where he remained for nearly 15 years. In 2019, he became a Realtor here in Sandpoint and since 2020 has been one of the top agents in the local MLS. By late summer 2022, he started his own successful brokerage called 48th Parallel Realty, which was operating until he merged with PureWest Christie’s International Real Estate in January 2024.

Nedra Kanavel comes from a journalism background, first as an assistant editor and editorial writer for a USA Today daily newspaper in the Southeast and Midwest. She moved on to public relations, which began her professional journey with marketing. She decided to pursue real estate in 2018 and joined Paul at PureWest Christie’s International Real Estate in January 2024 as an Associate Broker.

Paul, Nedra and the entire PureWest Sandpoint team are devoted to setting a new standard when it comes to exceeding client expectations. With two lawyers, a star journalist, psychologist, chemist, Northwestern grad and a veteran house flipper among their ranks, the team is brimming with talent. Their strength comes from their tight-knit culture and their willingness to use their respective talents to achieve their long-term vision — building relationships for a lifetime.

Q.Paul, what inspired you to pursue opening Idaho’s first PureWest Christie’s International Real Estate brokerage?

Paul: We had an amazing year serving clients in 2023 with 48th Parallel Realty, but I realized that to really provide maximum exposure for my sellers and buyers I needed a locally focused brand with an international presence. There was no better brand that fit my requirement than PureWest Christie’s International Real Estate.

PureWest is an independent brokerage and the largest brokerage by sales in Montana for four years running. Their partnership with Christie’s International Real Estate and Leading Real Estate Companies of the World (invitation-only network of the world’s market-leading independent brokerages) gives them a national/ international presence beyond Montana and Idaho. With all the crossover business between Sandpoint and Whitefish/Kalispell, for example, this means we can open up a previously untapped pool of buyers for our local property owners.

Q.Nedra, how/when did you first connect with Paul? And what led you to join his team at PureWest Christie’s International Real Estate?

Nedra: Funny enough, my husband and I were seated across the table from Paul and his wife at a Pack River Tasting Dinner a couple years ago. Being such a small community, we inevitably connected for showings and deals since then. I have the highest respect for Paul — his work ethic, his value of family and his knowledge as a licensed attorney.

Bringing the highest level of marketing and customer service is something I take very seriously. Years ago, I thrived in a powerhouse boutique brokerage in the Carolinas that allowed me to do just that. When Paul shared his vision for a tight-knit team with remarkable luxury marketing tools at their disposal, I couldn’t resist.

Q.Can you tell our readers more about PureWest Christie’s International Real Estate?

Paul: PureWest Christie’s is built on a legacy of excellence and a longstanding commitment to relationships for life dating back to 1972. There's a reason PureWest has a reputation for real estate excellence, professionalism, and cutting-edge market savvy. As a Christie’s International Real Estate affiliate, PureWest is a premier real estate concierge brokerage specializing in prestige properties. We are dedicated to being the leading luxury real estate brand in Idaho and Montana. This is apparent in everything we do, from the quality of our properties to the integrity of our interactions. Our agents and brokers have years of successful experience in buying and selling prestige properties, knowledge of the marketplace, and a deep passion for these beautiful lands and community.

Nedra: What I love most about PureWest Christie’s International Real Estate is that they are two individually powerful brands and organizations. PureWest Real Estate not only provides an enormous amount of digital advertising for agents and clients, they also have a stellar home office staff. Add in the power of Christie’s International Real Estate’s remarkable client interaction platform and luxury marketing, it makes for a fantastic combination I’ve not seen before.

Q.What do you believe PureWest Christie’s International Real Estate will bring to the community?

Paul: We have many wonderful agents in this community, but we think as a brokerage we can bring so much more to the Sandpoint area than previously imagined. Professionalism and honesty are the cornerstones of our brokerage. They are two of the most important qualities I can think of, and they’re something we bring to every transaction. These values, plus PureWest Christie’s International Real Estate’s incredible marketing strength, ensure our clients receive the greatest exposure for their properties while delivering world-class service on a local level. We’re bringing close ties with the Christie’s Auction House to our community. We can help sellers with not only real property but their art collections as well. Those ties work both ways, and the Auction House staff and clientele are fully connected to the real estate side.

Nedra: I literally cannot sleep at night knowing that we are bringing unparalleled service and value to the Sandpoint area. Our team is shaping up to be a stellar group of individuals who place a high value on honesty and hard work and are dedicated to being genuine and trustworthy. We’re not only well versed in the intricacies of this market, we’re some of its highest performers. Buyers and sellers in this market can walk in our doors and know they will receive unparalleled service.

Q. What differentiates PureWest Christie’s International Real Estate from the other brokerages in the area?

Paul: In addition to the above, I think we have the best marketing and property exposure in the industry. On top of what PureWest does, Christie’s International Real Estate and Leading Real Estate Companies of the World both give us incredible reach outside of the area to help us sell homes faster.

Nedra: PureWest’s focus is on not only relationships within the real estate world but also the local community. They provide every agent with matching funds to contribute to the local charity of their choice, in addition to PureWest giving to various community organizations and events. We’re excited to strengthen North Idaho charities and events with those contributions.

Q.What do you enjoy most about being able to live and work in this wonderful community?

Paul: I love walking into the coffee shop or supermarket and always running into someone I know. Sandpoint is still a small town with great people and values.

Nedra: My husband and I love the natural beauty of everyday life here and the freedom and flexibility to raise our two young boys here.

WONDEROUS Woven Wishes

MAKE-A-WISH IDAHO’S NEW NOOK IN NORTH IDAHO

In the tranquil expanse of North Idaho, where the rugged mountains meet the serene lakeshores, lies an organization of courageous and compassionate humans: Make-A-Wish Idaho. With its new regional office situated in the heart of Post Falls, the organization brings the magic of wish-granting closer to the communities it serves. Michelle John, the North Idaho regional manager for Make-A-Wish Idaho, shares insights into the organization's mission and its transformative impact on the lives of wish children and their families.

"The establishment of our new regional office in Post Falls signifies a significant milestone in our commitment to serving the needs of wish families in North Idaho," she remarks. "It reflects our dedication to accessibility and community engagement."

Last year, Make-A-Wish Idaho achieved a remarkable feat by granting 127 wishes statewide, with nearly 30 of those wishes originating from North Idaho. Michelle emphasizes the importance of local representation, stating, "Having a local office and a dedicated regional manager allows us to build stronger connections with wish families, volunteers and supporters, ensuring that no eligible child's wish goes unfulfilled."

The decision to establish a regional office in Post Falls resonates deeply with the organization's ethos of fostering stronger community bonds. With an increasing number of wish children in North Idaho, the presence of a local office provides a beacon of hope, offering personalized support to families navigating the challenges of critical illness. Michelle underscores the significance of proximity, stating, "Being closer to wish families enables us to provide tailored assistance and guidance throughout the wish-granting process. It's about fostering a sense of belonging and reassurance during difficult times."

The spirit of compassion thrives here in Sandpoint, reflecting in the community's support for Make-A-Wish Idaho’s initiatives in North Idaho. Among the wish children awaiting their moment of magic are Oliver, Riley and Aden. Oliver, with his infectious smile and adventurous spirit, dreams of exploring the vibrant landscapes of Hawaii, swimming with dolphins and experiencing the warmth of a traditional luau. Riley's journey, marked by resilience in the face of leukemia, converges at the gates of Disney World, where every corner holds the promise of enchanting adventures. Similarly, Aden, a young warrior battling

leukemia, finds solace in the prospect of frolicking with dolphins amidst Hawaii's pristine shores.

"The outpouring of support from the Sandpoint community has been truly heartwarming," affirms Michelle. "Local businesses and individuals have rallied behind us, demonstrating their commitment to brightening the lives of wish children."

The community's collective efforts serve as a testament to the transformative power of unity and empathy, weaving a tapestry of hope that sustains Make-A-Wish Idaho’s endeavors here in North Idaho. As the calendar unfolds, two seminal events beckon on the horizon, amplifying the organization's message of hope and compassion. April marks the advent of World Wish Month, a celebration honoring the legacy of granting life-changing wishes. Throughout the month, a myriad of events and initiatives unfold, inviting individuals and businesses to join the cause of wish-granting. Michelle explains, "World Wish Month encapsulates the essence of our mission. It's an opportunity to raise awareness and rally support for wish children and their families. We invite the community to join us in spreading joy and hope."

On June 1, the inaugural Walk for Wishes North Idaho event promises to be a celebration of unity and resilience. Held at Coeur d'Alene's Riverstone Park, the event invites participants to embark on a journey of solidarity, walking side by side to support wish children and their families. Michelle expresses, "This event is a testament to the power of community. By walking together, we demonstrate our commitment to making wishes come true."

The impact of these events transcends mere fundraising tallies, as each dollar raised breathes life into the dreams of wish children. With the average wish costing $10,000, every contribution serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path toward a brighter tomorrow for children battling critical illnesses. From corporate sponsorships to grassroots initiatives, the community's unwavering support ensures that no wish remains unfulfilled.

Amidst the tapestry of wish fulfillments in North Idaho, one story stands out as a testament to the transformative power of compassion. Aven, a spirited soul grappling with a gastrointestinal disorder, found solace in the companionship of a Golden Retriever puppy named Hope.

WITH EVERY STEP FORWARD, MAKE-A-WISH IDAHO

ILLUMINATES THE PATH TO A WORLD WHERE EVERY CHILD'S DREAM IS WITHIN

REACH.

"Aven's wish embodies the essence of our mission," reflects Michelle. "Through the generosity of our wish-granters and the unwavering support of the community, we were able to create a moment of pure joy and companionship."

For those eager to join the ranks of wish-granting heroes, opportunities abound for engagement and support. Whether through volunteering as wish granters, participating in fundraising events, or spreading awareness, individuals and organizations in Sandpoint can play a vital role in shaping the dreams of wish children. Michelle extends an invitation to all, urging them to become ambassadors of hope in their own right.

She reiterates the organization's unwavering commitment to its mission, stating, "We are on a trajectory to grant more wishes than ever before. With each wish granted, we sow the seeds of hope, resilience and joy in the hearts of wish children and their families. Together, let us embark on this journey of compassion and transformation, one wish at a time."

As the sun sets over the tranquil landscapes of North Idaho, the promise of tomorrow shines bright, fueled by the collective efforts of a community united in its pursuit of granting wishes and spreading joy. With every step forward, Make-A-Wish Idaho illuminates the path to a world where every child's dream is within reach. Like the gentle breeze that whispers through the pine forests or the shimmering reflections dancing upon the serene waters, the organization's presence brings a sense of solace and joy to those it touches. Each wish granted is not merely an event but a producer of smiles, laughter and shared moments that weave together to form a masterpiece of love and resilience. In the embrace of community, amidst the warmth of support and understanding, every wish fulfilled becomes a testament to the indomitable spirit of humanity, where dreams take flight and miracles unfold.

As the sun rises over the verdant hills and shimmering waters of the northern panhandle of Idaho, the spirit of compassion and solidarity continues to thrive within the community. Make-A-Wish Idaho's presence resonates deeply, serving as a catalyst for kindness and generosity. Through collaborative efforts and unwavering support, individuals and businesses alike come together to uplift the spirits of wish children and their families, infusing their lives with hope and joy.

The stories of wish children, like Oliver, Riley and Aden, serve as poignant reminders of the resilience and courage that reside within each young heart. Their dreams, though born from adversity, carry the power to inspire and unite communities in a shared mission of compassion. With each wish granted, a ripple of positivity reverberates throughout North Idaho, fostering a culture of empathy and inclusivity. Amidst the vibrant tapestry of wish fulfillments, Make-A-Wish Idaho celebrates the diverse dreams and aspirations of each wish child. From magical Disney adventures to serene encounters with nature's wonders, every wish is a testament to the resilience and spirit of these young warriors. Each wish journey is uniquely tailored to reflect the individual hopes and desires of the child, fostering a sense of empowerment and joy that transcends the boundaries of illness. Through the collaborative efforts of volunteers, donors and community partners, Make-A-Wish Idaho continues to weave moments of magic and happiness into the lives of wish children, igniting sparks of hope that illuminate their darkest days.

Looking ahead, Make-A-Wish Idaho's journey continues to unfold, guided by the unwavering dedication of volunteers, supporters and wish families. As the organization forges ahead, it remains steadfast in its commitment to serving the needs of every eligible wish child, ensuring that no dream goes unfulfilled. Together, as a community bound by compassion and shared purpose, North Idaho shines brightly as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path toward a future where every child's wish is granted with love and compassion.

"The outpouring of support from the Sandpoint community has been truly heartwarming. Local businesses and individuals have rallied behind us, demonstrating their commitment to brightening the lives of wish children."

Revitalize Your Living Space

20
Best spring-cleaning ideas for your home and garden

As the winter chill begins to fade away, it's time to usher in the warmth and freshness of spring. Along with blooming flowers and chirping birds, spring brings the perfect opportunity to revitalize your living space. Embrace the season by incorporating the best spring-cleaning ideas for both your home and garden. From decluttering your living spaces to rejuvenating your outdoor haven, these tips will help you achieve a fresh start for the warmer months ahead.

DECLUTTER AND ORGANIZE:

Begin your spring-cleaning journey by decluttering your home. Tackle one room at a time, sorting through items and deciding what to keep, donate or discard. Consider adopting the KonMari Method, where you keep only the items that "spark joy." Organize closets, shelves and drawers to create a more streamlined and visually appealing space. This not only enhances the aesthetics of your home but also contributes to a more serene living environment.

DEEP CLEAN CARPETS AND UPHOLSTERY:

Winter can leave behind dirt, dust and stains on your carpets and upholstery. Invest in a good carpet cleaner or hire professionals to deep clean your carpets. For upholstery, use appropriate cleaning solutions to refresh sofas, chairs and cushions. A thorough cleaning not only improves the overall hygiene of your living space but also breathes new life into your flooring and furniture.

REFRESH WALLS AND PAINTWORK:

Consider giving your walls a fresh coat of paint to brighten up your interiors. Opt for light and airy colors to reflect the spirit of spring. Attend to scuff marks, chipped paint and any other imperfections on walls and trim. This simple update can make a significant difference in the overall ambiance of your home.

REVAMP OUTDOOR SPACES:

Extend your spring-cleaning efforts to the great outdoors by revitalizing your garden and patio. Sweep away debris, power wash surfaces and clean outdoor furniture. Consider adding new planters, cushions, or even a fresh coat of paint to outdoor furniture, to create an inviting outdoor oasis. Plant colorful flowers and add seasonal décor to enhance the vibrancy of your garden.

At Northwest Auto Body we are committed to a quality repair and getting you back on the road quickly. Making things even more convenient –we provide pick-up and delivery.

CLEAN WINDOWS AND WINDOW TREATMENTS:

Let the natural light flood into your home by cleaning windows thoroughly. Remove dust, grime and streaks for a crystalclear view of the outdoors. Don't forget to clean window treatments such as blinds, curtains and drapes. Freshly cleaned windows not only improve the aesthetics of your home but also contribute to a brighter and more uplifting atmosphere.

PURGE AND ORGANIZE THE GARAGE:

The garage is often a neglected space when it comes to spring cleaning. Take the opportunity to purge items you no longer need, organizing tools, sporting equipment and other items. Install shelving or storage systems to maximize space and keep everything in order. A well-organized garage not only makes finding items easier but also provides a sense of accomplishment.

INSPECT AND MAINTAIN APPLIANCES:

Spring cleaning is the ideal time to inspect and maintain your household appliances. Clean out the lint trap in your dryer, vacuum refrigerator coils, and clear debris from dishwasher filters. Schedule professional maintenance for your HVAC system and check for leaks in plumbing. Regular maintenance not only extends the lifespan of your appliances but also ensures their optimal performance.

CREATE A GREEN CORNER INDOORS:

Bring the freshness of spring indoors by adding greenery to your living spaces. Consider placing potted plants or flowers on windowsills, tables or shelves. Indoor plants not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home but also contribute to improved air quality. Choose low-maintenance plants such as snake plants or pothos for a hassle-free green touch.

SWAP OUT BEDDING AND LINENS:

Give your bedrooms a seasonal makeover by swapping out heavy winter bedding for lighter, breathable options. Wash and store winter linens and bring out fresh, spring-themed bedding. Consider incorporating floral patterns or pastel colors to infuse a touch of springtime charm into your sleeping quarters.

EMBRACE SUSTAINABLE CLEANING PRACTICES:

As you embark on your spring cleaning journey, consider adopting eco-friendly and sustainable cleaning practices. Opt for natural cleaning products or make your own using simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda and lemon. Sustainable cleaning not only benefits the environment but also creates a healthier living environment for you and your family.

Spring cleaning is not just a chore; it's an opportunity to refresh and rejuvenate your living space. Embrace the renewal that spring brings, and enjoy a revitalized home that reflect the beauty of the season.

Broker with Tomlinson

Sotheby’s International Realty

Committed to helping clients achieve their real estate goals

26

“While I was in charge of Mousetrap, a 72-foot Viking yacht in Mexico and later in San Diego, the owner decided to sell it,” Tomlinson Sotheby’s International Realty’s Associate Broker Shannon Schulz recalls, looking back on how her real estate career began.

Shannon began her love of real estate by working in yacht management and maintenance in the maritime industry, where she managed anywhere from 50 to 100 boats at a time. When it came time to sell Mousetrap, Shannon remembers, “I prepared the yacht for the listing and worked closely with the broker on the sale. I fell in love with the process and immediately knew I wanted to steer my career in that direction.”

It was during this transaction that Shannon learned a lot about herself. She loved meeting new people, developing trusting relationships, learning about their needs and goals, and helping them achieve those goals. “There are innumerable ways to execute a sale, ensuring the client receives the most value. The entire process – from beginning to end – is so rewarding,” she shares.

Shannon and her family purchased their first North Idaho property in 2010. “We fell in love with North Idaho from the start – the sense of community, natural beauty, lakes, mountains, and abundant recreational opportunities,” she reflects. In 2018, they moved to Sandpoint, and Shannon says, “We wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, but the very best part of North Idaho is the people. SANDPOINT, IDAHO

Navigating the Spring REAL ESTATE MARKET

A guide for buyers and sellers

As the frost thaws and the flowers begin to bloom, the real estate market comes alive with the promise of new opportunities. With its picturesque landscapes, abundant outdoor activities, and small-town charm, Sandpoint continues to attract buyers seeking a slice of North Idaho paradise. Likewise, sellers can expect increased activity as the spring market brings renewed interest and higher demand. Here's what both buyers and sellers can expect in the vibrant Sandpoint real estate scene during the spring months.

For buyers, the spring season in Sandpoint offers a plethora of options to explore. With the melting snow revealing the stunning natural beauty of the area, prospective buyers can expect to find a variety of properties, from cozy homes perfect for a growing family to luxury waterfront estates. However, with increased demand comes heightened competition, so

buyers should be prepared to act quickly when they find a property that meets their criteria.

One key consideration for buyers in the Sandpoint market is the impact of seasonal fluctuations on pricing. Historically, spring sees a slight uptick in home prices as demand increases, but this can vary depending on factors such as inventory levels and overall market conditions. Working with a knowledgeable local real estate agent can help buyers navigate these fluctuations and make informed decisions.

Another factor for buyers to keep in mind is the importance of conducting thorough due diligence, especially in a competitive market. This includes obtaining pre-approval for financing, conducting home inspections, and researching neighborhood amenities and property

values. By being prepared and proactive, buyers can position themselves for success.

For sellers, the spring season presents a prime opportunity to showcase their properties to a broader pool of potential buyers. As the weather improves and outdoor activities resume, more buyers are likely to be actively searching for homes, making it an ideal time to list. Additionally, the spring market often brings an influx of out-of-town buyers, drawn to Sandpoint's recreational opportunities and laid-back lifestyle.

To maximize their chances of success, sellers should focus on enhancing their property's curb appeal and making necessary repairs or upgrades. Professional staging and photography will also help make a property stand out in online listings, attracting more attention from prospective

buyers. Pricing competitively based on current market trends and comparable sales is essential for generating interest and securing offers.

In a competitive market like Sandpoint, and lack of inventory, sellers may also have the advantage of receiving multiple offers on their property. While this can be advantageous, it's crucial for sellers to carefully evaluate each offer in terms of both price and terms before making a decision. An experienced real estate agent can provide valuable guidance throughout the negotiation process, helping sellers achieve their desired outcome.

Regardless of whether you're buying or selling, one thing is certain: The spring real estate market is brimming with potential. From stunning natural landscapes to a tight-knit community vibe, Sandpoint offers something for everyone, making it a highly desirable destination for both permanent residents and vacation home seekers alike. By understanding the unique dynamics of the market and working with a trusted real estate professional, buyers and sellers can navigate the process with confidence and achieve their real estate goals in this idyllic Northwestern gem.

SANDPOINT LIONS CLUB

EGG HUNT

A CELEBRATION OF SPRING

Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 30, for this year’s annual Egg Hunt, presented by the Sandpoint Lions Club. Always held the Saturday before Easter, the hunt begins at 9am sharp, rain or shine (or snow) at Lakeview Park (901 Ontario Street), so be sure to get there early!

Kids will once again have the chance to win one of several prizes, with eight bikes as well as skateboards, scooters and other age-appropriate riding toys. Be sure to check your eggs before you leave to see if you’ll walk away one of the lucky winners!

Dedicated volunteers come together to continue this fun-filled morning filled with laughter and smiles; the perfect way to kick off those Easter festivities and celebrations a day early.

Be sure to dress for the weather and be ready for an exciting, fastpaced morning. Each year, around 2,000 children and family members show up to the hunt to search for the hundreds of candyfilled plastic eggs. Hunts are broken down by age: 1 and younger (no

candy for this group, rather little stuffed animals and bath toys); 2 and 3; 4 and 5; 6 and 7; 8 and 9; 10 and 11. The hunting is usually over in less than 10 minutes!

“Our favorite part of our traditional Egg Hunt is watching the excitement on each kid's face as they hunt for eggs,” shares Janice Rader, Sandpoint Lions Club president. “Easter is the best part of spring. You can tell that the kids (and parents) are excited to get out and visit with their neighbors.”

The Sandpoint Lions Club will provide hot cocoa, and Evans Brothers Coffee Roasters will provide the coffee.

“We want to thank everyone in our community for their support by joining in our fun events!” Janice adds. “We look forward to seeing everyone bright and early Saturday, March 30!”

Keep an eye out as additional details are announced online at Facebook.com/SandpointLionsClub.

SOURDOUGH BOYS IN SAGLE

BACHELORS MAKING DUE WITH DOUGH

Have you heard of an area in Sagle called Sourdough? If you have, do you know how that area got its name? According to a local born in 1890, Maynard H. McDuffie, the Sagle District was called “Sourdough Flats” in the late 1890s because there was a “preponderance of bachelors that lived over there.”

You may be wondering what our historical neighborhood of bachelors has to do with the yeasty

fermenting dough. This was because the bachelors were not bread makers, due to lack of time and home economics lessons, so they kept a sourdough pot in a warm place for easy and cheap resources to fuel them through their long workdays on the railroad or logging. A week of work looked like 10-hour days, six days a week, and so they would say, “You would have to have something that would stick to your ribs.”
