"Carmen was excellent. First she sold my house in 2 days. She was instrumental in telling me what I needed to do to sell and it showed in the quick sale of my home. She worked very hard to find me a new house and guided me on the offer. It was immediately accepted because it was fair to both parties. I would highly recommend Carmen Hamner as an exceptional real estate agent." ~Scott Sewell, Owner

That is what Feather told me about Williamsburg Lifestyle when she first introduced me to the magazine one year ago. That mission spoke to me, and I felt that there was definitely room for more beautiful and uplifting media in our community. Watching her successfully

launch this publication in the midst of a pandemic is a testament to her, and the quick reputation she built Williamsburg Lifestyle Magazine as a widely enjoyed local luxury publication. When I learned Feather was looking for a successor to focus on her pursuit of a doctorate in physical therapy, I leapt at the opportunity to ensure the mission carried on. I moved to Williamsburg from Rochester, NY in 2013 with my beautiful wife, Kristin, to be closer to family. In the eight years since, we have had three beautiful children John (6), Henry (4) and Marie (2) and have only started to discover all the wonderful sights, sounds and experiences our area has to offer. Each year we uncover a few more gems that make this area special. If last year taught us anything, it’s that you need to make the most of what you have, in every moment. As the new owner and co-publisher of Williamsburg Lifestyle, I can’t wait to highlight all that makes Williamsburg Wonderful, and help you make the most of it. It is my privilege to introduce my partner and publisher, Leslie Pearce, who made my decision possible. Leslie moved to Williamsburg with her husband, Steve and son, Paul in 2014 from Charlotte, NC. Steve owns a local handyman service and is a member of the National Guard, and Paul is a senior at Jamestown High.

development. It only seemed natural that we reconnected on this project. This month, please take a moment to read our feature article, Dine Different. I wrote it to give a voice to the restaurant community that is facing yet another challenge as delivery apps like Grubhub and Doordash syphon locally spent dollars to San Francisco corporations. Dine different, and you could multiply the impact of your local dollar many times over.

1. Pick a Problem to Address A leader can never become a catalyst until he or she first takes ownership of the problem they wish to solve. You cannot rally people to a cause that you aren’t willing to own, especially these days; people know when a leader is being half-hearted, and they don’t respect it. When you pick a problem to solve or a cause to rally around, you must have conviction in order to succeed. Over the years, I’ve learned that whenever I feel a sense of conviction about an issue, I need to start moving in the direction I believe I should go, even if I’m uncertain. Action creates ownership, and ownership creates credibility with people. And you need that

credibility because transformation cannot be done by one person alone—we all need people to join us on the journey.

Dine Different HELP LOCAL RESTAURANTS SURVIVE COVID

WE ARE NOW FULLY ONE YEAR INTO THE COVID PANDEMIC AND IT HAS UNQUESTIONABLY CHANGED HOW WE WORK, PLAY AND COME TOGETHER. Few businesses have been as heavily impacted as the restaurant industry. According to the National Restaurant Association, mandated lockdowns and concerns about the safety of dining in public during the pandemic has resulted in 17% of all US restaurants closing. In communities across America, people responded to the pressures put on local restaurants by ramping up their ‘eat local’ campaigns. Here in Williamsburg Michelle Sieling, Jacquelyn Liebler and Brandi Walker got together and decided to create a local Facebook group, Williamsburg Eat Local, to connect the community with local family-owned restaurants. The public group now has over 10,000 members where people share their favorite local culinary discoveries, and restaurants post new menus and current specials. Simply search on Facebook, or Google ‘williamsburg eat local’ to find the group and join. The local foodie hivemind will answer any restaurant related question you can think. One member recently made a post looking for the best dog-friendly place to drink a beer on a Monday, and the answers came pouring in. Within the first day there CONTINUED >

DINE DIFFERENT (CONTINUED)

were 53 replies promoting at least half a dozen different location. “The community has been incredibly supportive, and local restaurant owners are so grateful for the community’s efforts”, Jacquelyn said in response to the success of the group. The industry has had to continually evolve over this past year. It started with roping off or removing seating areas. Then many locations began adding outdoor dining options. Merchants Square got in on the action and lined Duke of Gloucester Street with umbrella tables and chairs. Savvy local owners began offering family style meals that were easy and affordable options for parents to skip another night in the kitchen. Revolution Golf & Grill went so far as to incorporate movie nights and indoor archery to their experience-based dine-in offerings to keep people coming back. Ultimately, however, it was the shift from dine-in to delivery that has proven to be the most difficult and potentially dangerous adaptation restaurants have made to serve the community they so love. Aside from Chinese food and pizza shops, most places did not offer delivery as a part of their business. Business owners looking to add delivery service found that special insurance was required, and was often too cumbersome to do in-house. To make delivery possible, most local restaurants rely on just three billion-dollar ‘delivery companies’ - Grubhub, DoorDash, Uber Eats. These delivery apps appear to efficiently fill the void and empower restaurants to sell more meals to more customers, an apparent winwin. What your favorite restaurant isn’t telling you, but should, is that these increasingly common deliveries are crippling their profitability and likelihood of survival. Here’s how the business model works: Let’s say a consumer wants to order a sandwich from a local restaurant via one of these delivery apps. A sandwich and fries costs $14. The consumer might pay up to $22 because of the service fee, tip, tax and a delivery fee.

20

Williamsburg Lifestyle | March 2021

From that $14 sale, the restaurant might get to keep $9 if the commission fee is 35%. What gets overlooked is that $8 of the $9 is likely the overhead expense to provide that meal. This means there is (hopefully) $1 of profit where there would have been $5. To express that more clearly, 1 curbside pickup can generate the same profit margin for your favorite restaurant as 5 identical Grubhub deliveries! Considering that restaurants also pay the tax on meals delivered by these companies, some meals can actually be delivered at a loss to the business. If you are comfortable dining in public where every precaution is being made to keep everyone safe, it unquestionably has the greatest economic impact. That same hypothetical meal would have net perhaps $17 dine-in with a tip, or closer to $30 if you added a cocktail and tip. Dining-in is certainly not in everyone’s comfort zone, and not always practical. For that reason, local restaurant owners we spoke with passionately encouraged people to contact them directly for delivery options and to use contact-free curbside pickup. Annalisa Liguria-Dill, from Anna’s Brick Oven Pizza and Pasta told us, “Some may not realize, but the apps charge very high commission rates and that money does not stay in the community… We have online ordering directly on our website www.annasbrickoven.com with link for digital version and offer curbside takeout and delivery with a rewards program as an incentive.” Annalisa added, “ Ideally we would prefer for customers to come in to our restaurant to dine so they can get the full dining experience and social activity that is so important right now as people are generally feeling more isolated.” Taking a few minutes to call ahead and order dinner for curbside pickup can have 3-10x the positive financial impact that simply waiting and ordering it for delivery after you settle in at home for the evening. Williamsburg residents have clearly proven they have the heart to help, and hopefully now have a clearer understanding of the importance of opting for dine-in, curbside pickup, to-go and in-house delivery orders over mobile app delivery orders.

“Williamsburg residents have clearly proven they have the heart to help.”

5 simple ways to relieve stress ARTICLE BRIANNA TOWNE, MS PHOTOGRAPHY ASHLEE KAY PHOTOGRAPHY

EVERYONE IS LOOKING FOR LESS STRESS. The problem is our identities are often tied to our stress levels. The ability to slow down, take a break and rest can only come when you allow yourself to let go of your identity as someone who’s always “on” and always providing or working or hustling. I see it daily with the clients I work with: constantly running in fight-or-flight mode, fatiguing adrenals, terrible sleep, but the real issue is that they’re not willing to allow themselves to rest because hustling is a part of their identity. Stress is a silent killer. It’s the precursor to almost every illness. While we need some level of stress in our lives, we can’t live in it constantly. Chronic stress can lead to everything from heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers and weight gain to depression and anxiety. The following are my 5 favorite ways to de-stress and turn off that constant fight-or-flight mode. In addition, try adding this warm ginger citrus tonic to your nightly routine to unwind and relax instead of grabbing a glass of wine. 28

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE (CONTINUED)

:: S TE P 1 :: Meditation is one of the best ways to tap into the sympathetic nervous system and release stress. To start, sit quietly with your eyes closed for 3-5 minutes daily and just breathe. If thoughts come up, notice them, and let them go. Don’t cling. If you feel yourself getting distracted, count your breaths and focus on the gentle rise and fall of your belly. :: S TE P 2 :: The best type of exercise is one that you enjoy. Good news is, the exercise you enjoy can also help reduce stress levels. Yoga, running, weight training, cycling, whatever you enjoy. Aim for fitting in movement 3x/week for optimum benefits. :: S TE P 3 :: The foods you eat absolutely can contribute to your stress response. Large amounts of processed foods, added sugars, caffeine and alcohol can spike cortisol (stress hormone) levels. Opt for real foods, lots of veggies, fruits and whole grains to keep stress and blood sugar levels balanced. :: S TE P 4 :: Prioritize sleep. The number one indicator of chronic stress I see in patients is poor sleep. Turn off screens at least 1hr before bed, keep your phone out of the bedroom, get blackout curtains and an eye mask. If you find yourself tossing and turning all night, keep a journal or notebook and pen by the bed so you can get pesky thoughts out of your head. :: S TE P 5 :: Adopt an attitude of gratitude. Gratitude is an incredibly effective way to lower your stress levels while making others feel better, too. It’s a win-win! A few ways to express gratitude: write a list of 10 things you’re thankful for before bed each night, say ‘thank you’ more often, write letters to friends for no reason other than to say hi and thanks. Don’t forget yourself! Each day, thank yourself, your body, your mind, for all it does for you.

IF THERE IS ONE THING MY FAMILY AND I LOVE THROUGHOUT THE SEASONS, IT’S A BOWL OF GRANOLA.

CULINARY CREATIONS

SPICED GRANOLA RECIPE WARM SPICED GRANOLA Paired with icy cold yogurt, fruit and honey during the summer or over baked apples drizzled with maple syrup in the cold months, or even straight out of the jar as a healthy snack, it’s a must have.

INGREDIENTS + 4 C. of Rolled Oats

+ 1 C. Sour Cherries

+ 1 C. of unsweetened

+ 1/2 C. Avocado Oil

Toasted Coconut Strips

+ 1/2 C. Maple Syrup

+ 1/2 C. Honey Roasted

+ 2 Tsp. Ground Cinnamon

Sliced Almonds (optional)

+ 2 Tsp. Pumpkin Spice

+ 1/2 C. Pumpkin Seeds

+ 1/2 Tsp. Salt

DIRECTIONS 01 Preheat oven to 250 degrees 02 Crumble coconut strips with a tight squeeze before adding. 03 Gently stir all ingredients together in a large bowl thoroughly. 04 Line a large baking sheet with parchment or slip pad. 05 Evenly spread granola across pan 06 Bake for 30-45 minutes, keeping an eye on when the granola looks lightly browned. 07 Remove from oven and let cool. 08 Store in a large glass jar TIP The trick to having large chunks of granola is to let it fully cool after removing it from the oven and then gently scraping a large wooden spoon through it. This will allow for big pieces to be kept as well as smaller crumbles along the way.
