It is with great pleasure that we present to you our annual Men's issue! In this edition, we delve into the world of men, celebrating many of their achievements, interests and unique stories.
You may be wondering why I chose the title “Let’s Hear it for the Boys” for the Men’s issue publisher letter. To be honest, it’s because I haven’t been able to get that song out of my head! As I write this letter, I just finished watching Lakota West Theatre’s performance of "Footloose the Musical" three times in the span of a weekend. Then it made national news that after a 2-year social-media campaign, Payson High School was able to get "Footloose" star Kevin Bacon to return to their school, where the movie was shot. Add to that the 40th anniversary of the movie "Footloose" this year, and it’s no wonder I can’t get that song out of my head (you can thank me later if I just got it stuck in your head too).
The men we feature in this issue are doing some amazing things. Our cover story is about a local engineer who threw caution to the wind and left his corporate job to start an ice cream business. We also meet four pairs of local fathers and daughters (including one set of in-laws) who work together and hear how that has impacted their relationships. Plus, we showcase food fit for a king, golf swing tips and so much more this month.
To all the men in our community, we thank you for being an important part of shaping our vibrant townships. Let’s hear it for the boys!

KING CORONA LATIN KITCHEN CANTINA IS A CULINARY DESTINATION FIT FOR ROYALTY

King Corona is more than a new restaurant. It is a lively and festive culinary destination in West Chester.
“There is simply nothing like it around here,” says Nathan Taylor, co-owner of King Corona Latin Kitchen Cantina. “There are other restaurants around, but there is not a high-end entertaining restaurant like this in the area.”
The vibrant atmosphere inside King Corona is reflected in modern, colorful lighting and decor with a Latin American influence.
“People love our décor. We are always complimented on the style of the restaurant,” Taylor says. “When people arrive, they love the eagle wings you see.”
The 4,000-square-foot cantina opened in the heart of the Streets of West Chester in November and adds a distinct dining experience to the bustling entertainment district.
“Our patio is open for the season and seats about 40,” Taylor says. “We have new TVs and heaters for those nights with a little chill in the air.”
King Corona also features intimate booth tables for dining on a date night before or after watching a movie at the AMC theater next door. The inside is also set with tables and chairs if you’re looking for space to accommodate a larger number of guests and a more spirited experience.
“Our service is top-notch,” Taylor says.
The cocktails served at King Corona are beautifully crafted and soaked in the creativity of the cantina. The Queen’s Passion is a signature cocktail that mixes vodka, honey, agave nectar and passion fruit.
“It is by far the favorite cocktail we serve,” says Taylor.
The El Jefe is a special treat combining Buchanan’s Pineapple scotch, Cointreau, lemon juice and Grand Marnier. But if you’re looking for a bourbon-inspired drink, try the Drunk Bee. It mixes Woodford Bourbon, peach syrup, lime juice, honey and sweet tea. King Corona has a fully stocked bar and mixes terrific margaritas.
The decor, entertainment options and drinks do not overshadow the food menu at King Corona. The menu is consistently updated, bringing innovative new dishes to the lineup while keeping traditional favorites.
The pork belly bites served with guacamole, pico de gallo and spicy BBQ sauce are a popular starter. You can also find variations of Argentinian empanadas among the nearly one dozen appetizers.

con queso. The Chori Pan is an Argentinian chorizo served with ciabatta bread, salsa rosa, salsa criolla, chimichurri and ensalada rusa.
If you’re looking for a unique plate, order the Pulpo al Pastor. It is a chargrilled octopus marinated in a special adobo al pastor and served with grilled pineapple, chambray onion, roasted jalapeno and arroz de coco.
The more traditional bison burger is a best seller. The Bison King Burger comes on a jetblack bun and the bison patty is topped with smoked gouda, avocado, spring mix, crispy onions and garlic aioli. Sweet potato fries complete this popular menu item.
“Our food is very flavorful,” Taylor says. “The birria tacos are tremendous, the deep-fried Oreos are outstanding. There is nothing like those that I’ve found. They are so good.”
You’ll also find sushi on the menu, including the signature King Corona roll of shrimp tempura, cream cheese, avocado and octopus topped with cilantro crab, yum yum sauce and crispy onions.
A recent addition to the King Corona offerings is a brunch menu served seven days a week. Staples of eggs and bacon are available as well as enhanced brunch dishes like the Latin Benedict. The dish features two eggs Mexican-style with salsa verde, sitting atop ciabatta bread and topped with shredded chicken, queso fresco and sour cream.
“We are featuring our brunch menu for those looking for a unique place for a business meeting or a group of friends gathering to catch up,” Taylor says.
For those looking for late-night fun, King Corona recently added a weekend entertainment event featuring a DJ so guests can “eat, dance and drink” from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
“Our sound system is awesome, and it makes for a great place to be with family and friends,” Taylor says.
The cantina features several televisions for those looking for a place to gather to catch a game. Groups also enjoy the 360-degree camera booth for a special photo experience, capturing everyone at the table.
“We are a location where you can come on a special date, bring in your family for a celebration or watch your favorite team on TV,” says Taylor.
King Corona Latin Kitchen Cantina brings a memorable dining experience to West Chester and has something unique for nearly every occasion.
“This is not a typical Tex-Mex place,” Taylor says. “We are bringing different styles and a fun atmosphere for people to eat, drink, dance or just relax. It’s a really fun, festive place.”

MEET FOUR LOCAL FATHER-DAUGHTER DUOS THAT WORK TOGETHER
Fathers and daughters often have a special bond, but it takes a unique pair to merge career paths on the daily. As Father’s Day approaches, we shine a spotlight on four sets of local fathers and daughters who work together. For these remarkable duos, being colleagues is a bonus that extends beyond the familial thread of security, trust and love. Sharing professional success only enriches their relationships and workplaces, even for the two that are in-laws.
“The best thing about working with my dad is having a built-in mentor whose office connects right to mine. I can go to him with any question or problem and know that I’m getting the best advice.”
– Kara Lyons
Working together since 2015 at Lyons & Lyons, Rob Lyons and Kara Lyons each bring skills that strengthen the work of their law firm for the community. A deep respect for each other allows his wisdom and her eye for the future to guide the business.
“The best thing about working with my dad is having a built-in mentor whose office connects right to mine,” Kara says. “I can go to him with any question or problem and know I’m getting the best advice. We have such a mutual respect for each other’s opinions that it allows our daily operations to run seamlessly.”
Rob has a long history of working with family.
“I started a law firm in West Chester in 1983,” he explains. “In 1991, my father, also an attorney, came out of retirement and joined my law practice. We then practiced together for 12 years until he retired again in 2003. I thoroughly enjoyed the time we worked together.”
Fast forward to 2015 when Kara joined the firm with energy and fresh ideas.
“Kara excelled in law school and had many job opportunities upon graduation, but ultimately she decided to join my firm,” says Rob. “I was ecstatic and hoped we would have the rewarding work relationship that my father and I had.”
“My dad was extremely receptive and open to allowing me to modernize our office and procedures without any pushback,” Kara says. “From day one, he trusted me inherently, which is the best stamp of approval I could ask for.”
Rob adds, “Since Kara started practicing with me, the law practice and I have become revitalized. It has been an absolute joy.”
Amanda Phelan married into the Phelan family and has been working alongside Brent Phelan, her father-in-law, at the Phelan Insurance Agency since 2013. More than a last name, they share a work environment and work ethic. A similar approach to their careers underscores a mutual understanding and admiration that extends into their family life.
“It is nice to have someone to talk to about work items outside of the workplace,” says Brent. “It is great to understand how hard she works and see how much success she has attained…it would not be possible to really understand if she was in a different industry.”
“Brent is an excellent role model both in business and on a personal level,” Amanda shares. “I like being able to discuss challenges I am facing both at work and outside of work with him and feel he can relate to the issues.”
Brent and Amanda are connected in the best possible way— by grandchildren.
“My wife sometimes laughs,” Brent shares, “as our calendar used to be crowded with work events and now it is sometimes crowded with babysitting opportunities because Amanda is attending work events like I used to attend.”
“Brent flew alone with both my daughters (then aged 2 and 5) to their Florida home while my husband and I went on an adultsonly vacation,” Amanda recalls. “I logged into a Zoom meeting one morning and saw the girls sitting on his lap, enjoying the call as well.” She adds, “He has the amazing ability to juggle work, family and friends, and still be present in all situations.”
Alison Shiver-Himes is a third-generation employee of Shiver Security Systems. She has worked with her father Chip Shiver in the family business for more than 20 years. Together, they are a force of nature, focused on success that comes as a result of their top-notch customer service and their care for the safety of the community around them.
“I’ve enjoyed watching Alison mature in learning our business and being willing to take on many different projects and responsibilities,” Chip says.
“I always knew that Alison would put our customers first, which has been the core success of our company for the past 53 years,” he adds. “Her positive
core values as a little girl have followed her through to success as a businessperson. She is competitive and focused on success.”
As Chip eases into retirement, Alison reflects on the many ways working with her father impacts her life.
“Every day I get to see my father and learn from him, not only professionally but personally,” says Alison. “He is a great mentor that has taught me to manage my time between my family and work so I can be a well-rounded wife, mother and co-worker.”
“Dad has built his legacy and is now able to enjoy all aspects of it in his partial retirement,” she explains. “He can enjoy his grandchildren—he is an amazing grandpa—work or golf whenever he wants. He deserves it!”
For two years, family man Michael Corna and his daughter Sarah Corna have worked together at American Family Insurance in a career that helps folks prepare for some of life’s most challenging moments. This father-daughter team brings comfort during stressful times, for each other and for their clients.
“The office is a better place because we are there together,” Michael says. “Sarah has a calming and pleasant voice that resonates with the people that call us in a crisis. Having her there makes me more patient,” he adds.
“I never thought I’d be in a sales or customer service environment. Working with and learning from my dad has really helped me with this.” Sarah says. “He reminds me that there is nothing to be stressed about. Life is good!”
Knowing the little things that can make a big difference in a co-worker’s day is a key to their success at working together.
“I get to go home for lunch every day and let my dogs out,” Sarah points out. “I’m not sure if I’d be able to do that with another boss,” she says with a laugh. “I also enjoy the Dunkin’ Donuts K-cups he keeps in stock for me.”
Some family habits are hard to break: when Sarah has a question about the work calendar, she still calls her mom.
“I’m always the last one to know when Sarah is on vacation!” Michael says.
There’s nothing like a delicious ice cream treat to bring a smile to your face. Stephen Sung of Liberty Township knows the power of the creamy dessert. Last year, he traded in his career as a chemical engineer to launch Sung’s Treats, his own line of fresh, handmade, custom ice cream.
“I'm an engineer by training,” says Sung. “I got my PhD in chemical engineering, and I’ve been in R&D and operations—it’s a lot of problem-solving, and people are never happy. It was the kind of job where it’s never fast enough, never good enough. It was neat to make a big life change.”
This pivotal moment came to Sung in a moment of reflection in the wake of deep loss.
CONTINUED >
Sung's Treats is honored as an Ohio Proud Partner, meaning that more than 50% of their ingredients are grown, raised or processed in Ohio.“Both of my parents passed away within 18 months of each other,” he shares. “It made me reflect a little bit about what I wanted to do. I realized that life is short. So, I wanted to try something new and different. I know that every time I go get ice cream, it is always fun. It is always exciting. It’s a good change to deal with people on the happier end of the spectrum.”
Sung prepares his small-batch ice creams in a commissary kitchen with the precision of an engineer and the creativity of a kid. He uses natural ingredients to craft one-of-a-kind flavors. Sung’s Treats are bringing smiles to his customers not only because they are delicious, but also because they are healthier. The secret ingredient in his approach is his desire to make the custom orders just right for his customers, even anticipating allergy and food sensitivity issues.
“Flavor is important,” says Sung. “Getting really good, fresh ingredients is key. I spend a lot of time trying to source better and healthier ingredients. You can see the list of ingredients on the package—they are things you can actually pronounce.”
With the support of his wife and four children, Sung’s leap of faith into a new career has been life-changing. Now, he can’t stop smiling.
“I don't feel stressed about work anymore," he says. "When I'm talking with people—especially the little kids—when they taste my ice cream, I like to see how it brings a big smile to their face. It’s very fulfilling.”
Sung’s Treats are available locally at Liberty Farm Market and Oakley Kitchen, and his made-to-order custom flavors can be ordered online at SungsTreats.com

Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
If you are buying clubs off the rack, you aren’t giving yourself the best chance for success. Golf technology is evolving every year, and although you don’t need to buy a new driver each year, if you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip. The clubs don’t swing themselves, so don’t neglect instruction and practice, but getting the right equipment is a vital piece of the puzzle.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.
Get good golf instruction, REGULARLY.
02.
We’ve all heard someone say, “I should get a lesson sometime.” To be effective, you need regular lessons from a PGA certified pro, not just one lesson. Getting quality instruction from the same instructor can turn slices into draws and give you the confidence to play with anyone on any course. Years ago, golf instructors started instruction with chipping and putting and then graduated to the driver. Now, instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first. My friend regularly outdrives me by 50 yards, but my ball is in the hole first most of the time because of my training and practice on the short game.
Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
03.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads: Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
Practice your short game every day.
04.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
Instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first.
