Problem Solvers

We’ve highlighted some real problem solvers in this issue. Men who saw a need, an opportunity, and ran with it.

Take our cover story about Rustic Bound. Brian couldn’t find a journal that was both handsome and durable enough for his liking, so he went out and created his own.

Or Will, owner of The Ohio Barbecue Store. He searched far and wide and couldn’t locate a store that matched what he had in mind. He saw an opportunity and The Ohio Barbecue store—with its wide selection of grills, sauces, rubs and accessories—opened its doors last year.

Dave recognized that a space to lounge and enjoy a good cigar was missing in this town, so he and his business partners, Dave and Brandon, joined forces ... and now you can light up a stogie at Creekside!

We can’t forget Brandon, or “Mullet Review” as many of you know him (or maybe even as your local mailman). There were so many delicious local restaurants flying under the radar. He found his calling in showcasing them on his social media pages and bringing them more business along the way.

We couldn’t be more thrilled to highlight these men ... and the fruits of their labor.

Being Outdoors a Whole Lot More

A Sundance all-season pergola is one of the best, most cost-effective ways to achieve the covered deck or patio you’ve been dreaming of. But don’t just take our word for it.

“We loved the design and engineering. Every component of this system is first class. They did a great job designing and installing our pergola. I’d recommend it 100%.” - Wayne

“The versatility of the louvers being able to open and close—that was an important aspect for us. We didn’t want to get an awning that blocked out the sun and nothing could get in. We wanted to have the flexibility where we can open the louvers and let some sun in or close when the rain comes.” - Cheryl

MULLET approved

If you’ve ever found yourself mid-scroll, suddenly captivated by a video of crab rangoon cheese sticks oozing with cheesy goodness (narrated by a voice that feels like your funniest friend on a caffeine kick), you’ve just stepped into the wonderfully bold and wildly tasty world of the Mullet Review

And who’s the mastermind behind the madness? None other than Brandon Elliott, a 29-year-old food reviewer, self-declared “hot blonde,” and Loveland mailman by day, flavor hero by night.

“I’ve been a mailman for seven years,” Brandon says with a smile, rocking a mullet that’s become his signature look. “I’ve gotten to know a lot of great restaurants through my routes.”

The Milford native has made a name for himself across Greater Cincinnati. And it all started with sticker shock. “Fast food prices are outrageous for the quality,” Brandon explains. “I’m spending the same amount at mom-and-pop places, so I decided to find them around the city.” That mission turned into a side project, then a passion, and eventually, a following.

“SOMEONE MESSAGED ME
Jeremy Grove, owner of J’s Fish Tacos, with Brandon

It wasn’t long before the  Mullet Review caught fire online. “I made a post for Lori’s American Grille in Goshen about their crab rangoon cheese sticks ... and it went viral,” he says. The buzz exploded, and before long, fans were tracking his reviews, while small businesses were welcoming the resulting boost in biz and customers.

“Someone messaged me on a Saturday saying that for the first time ever, Lori’s had sold out of food,” Brandon recalls. “Cars were backed up on State Route 28 because of my post.”

Despite the unexpected fame, Brandon keeps it simple and grounded. His goal is to lift up small businesses, especially the ones that might go unnoticed. “I just want to see all the cool food places around Cincy,” he says. And while his reviews occasionally include chains, “just to see if the commercials are gimmicks,” his heart is with the locals.

His approach is refreshingly straightforward: judge the food, not the service. “You don’t know when someone is just having a bad day,” he explains. “It’s not the owner’s fault.”

And while he doesn’t take himself too seriously—leaning into the humor and “hot-blonde” persona—Brandon has created a brand that resonates. “I’ve always been pretty funny,” he gives a grin again. “It’s all pretty easy. It’s just me being me. I’m doing a lot of it for the laughs.”

Curious about some of Brandon’s alltime local faves? In addition to Lori’s, that list includes Roscoe’s Pizza in Waynesville, J’s Fish Tacos at Narrow Path Brewing Co., Paxton’s Grill, and the Bagel & Deli Truck at Cappy’s in Loveland. Each place brings something unique ... and Brandon’s goal is to share that with as many people as possible.

“THE

COOLEST PART OF ALL OF THIS IS THE outpouring OF SUPPORT FROM ALL THE local SMALL BUSINESSES...”

Brandon has a way about him—from his loud, sometimes campy attire to the way he genuinely connects with restaurant owners and employees. His unique rating system is also part of his charm. It’s never just 10/10. It’s much, much higher—and that’s a compliment.“That’s about as good as it gets. If I give you that, I’m definitely coming back.”

Yet Mullet Review’s real charm lies in Brandon’s honesty, humor and unmistakable love for the community. Beyond the laughs and mouth-watering content, it’s clear that Brandon has sparked a ripple effect—one that’s actually helped grow business for local restaurants.

“The coolest part of all of this is the outpouring of support from all the local small businesses ... coming together just to wish me the best,” Brandon explains.

Whether he’s causing a rangoon frenzy or uncovering the next big food truck, Brandon proves that great taste and a good laugh go a long way—especially when served with a side of mullet. Follow his food-fueled adventures at Mullet Review on Facebook, Insta, TikTok, or YouTube. Warning: you will get hungry.

Every Cigar Is a Story Burning to be Told

ARTICLE BY CARLY TAMBORSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J. CAPPS
Dave Imber and Dave Wik
“Seventy-five percent of our humidor is smaller brands ... it’s exciting to put smaller brands out.”

In South Florida, a man without a cigar in his hand is like a man without a Tommy Bahama shirt.

That’s where Dave Imber—partner of Creekside Cigar Co. with buddies Dave Wik and Brandon Gilliam—grew up before moving to Cincinnati with his family in 2019.

“In South Florida, there’s such a culture for cigars ... so many brands are headquartered in Miami, so it’s common,” Dave explains. “Growing up, my dad smoked cigars … not super often, but with his friends or when we’d be on vacation. There was always something about cigars that I thought was so cool.”

When he got to college, Dave realized smoking cigars wasn’t just about the stogie—it was about bringing people together.

“It’s something me and my good friends would do: meet up, hang out over a cigar ... it was the ritualistic aspect that I always loved,” Dave remembers. “Around 2010, smaller brands started popping up, and I started geeking out over the tobacco they used ... they were different, they tasted like nothing I’d ever had before. I wanted to learn everything about them.”

A photographer and creative at heart, Dave started shooting photos for CigarClub.com, working on their creative branding as head of marketing.

“Then I moved up here and met Dave and Brandon— we had a lot of the same ideas for opening a lounge,” Dave smiles. “And the rest is history.”

In April 2024, the trio opened Creekside Cigar Co. in Maineville, where it has already gained popularity for its sheer uniqueness—and genuine warmth.

“Aside from selling cigars, our core values are superior service and hospitality,” Dave explains. “When people come in, we want them to have an amazing experience and feel welcomed. It can be intimidating coming into a cigar lounge if you’re not familiar with it, so we’ve put a lot of things in place to make people feel comfortable right when they walk in.”

Part shop, part lounge, part outdoor space, and part private club, Creekside has something for every level of cigar interest … a welcoming environment and knowledgeable staff for novices. A main space that’s open to the public and offers non-alcoholic bevs—and BYOB if you like. Plus a members-only lounge and two options for private membership (Silver and Gold) that include perks like storage lockers, discounts, speaker events, members-only nights, cigar allotments and more.

“We loved the location right off US-22 and saw a big opportunity ... not many lounges in Greater Cincinnati or even nationwide put such a strong emphasis on service and hospitality. We felt it would make us stand out and be different, and people would be attracted to that.”

They were right. Creekside won the prestigious Best of the Leaf Award for Best Lounge during April’s 2025 Premium Cigar Association Show in New Orleans for their selection, presentation, customer service, merchandising and aesthetics.

And what about the cigars themselves? While they do carry well-known brands, one of Creekside’s big differentiators is their expansive offering of cigars made by smaller producers and manufacturers.

“Most cigar shops in bigger markets have your flagship heritage brands, which will be 75 percent of their selection, with only 25 percent lesser-known brands,” Dave says. “We’ve flipped that ... 75 percent of our humidor is smaller brands and 25 percent is those bigger brands. It’s exciting to put smaller brands out.”

Creekside frequently also hosts cigar brand owners to come in and tell their stories, giving guests a personal experience with different owners and creators.

“I love the relational aspect of people being so passionate about their craft,” Dave says. “We hosted someone who had worked at NASA, quit, then started his own company in the Dominican Republic, and told us what that meant for him—I want everyone to meet people like that.”

Creekside is open seven days a week with varying hours, and is currently building a new outdoor space to make their patio and overall seating capacity even larger. Along with a special Father’s Day event, they’re also hosting an event series through September where out-of-town brand owners will do evening cigar tastings, share their stories and offer deals, while Creekside provides bourbon and their own beer (Creekside Oatmeal Stout by DVD Brew).

With an aesthetic aura of refined hospitality rich in leather, wood, photography and art, come get comfortable—and smoke in good company—at Creekside Cigar Co.

SMOKIN’ hot!

It’s a pitmaster’s paradise. Sauces, rubs, seasonings and marinades create a Southwest landscape of color that fills 25 feet of shelves from floor to ceiling along one wall of The Ohio Barbecue Store. A whopping 347 varieties in all. Across the floor are the tools of the trade: brushes, carving forks, tongs, chimney grill starters and spatulas, a variety of fuel choices, anything you can think of—and some you can’t—to accessorize your grill or smoker.

In between, the centerpiece for outdoor living … the largest display of grills, smokers, griddles and pizza ovens that you can imagine. It’s hard to know where to begin after stepping across the threshold, but not to worry. An excellent guide is likely manning the counter straight ahead—store owner and champion grill master, Will Davis.

For customers looking to buy a new grill, Will always begins the conversation with two questions. “What do you want to cook or learn to cook?” And then, the nitty-gritty. “Do you want to dip your toe in the water with a stainless steel grill that might cost $1,000, or go all in and spend $2,400 for one you’ll never have to replace?”

There’s also the question of fuel. Charcoal, propane, wood pellets, natural gas, wood? Then choosing a sauce, seasoning, marinade, injection, a rub for the more adventurous. So many variables before the meat even makes it to the cooktop!

Since opening in August last year (a debut boasting 300 people), The Ohio Barbecue Store has become a destination for both indoor and outdoor cooks. Yet, 10 years ago, it wasn’t even a distant dream.

This Barbecue Store Is Primed to Put the Sizzle In Your Summer

After a 20-year stint in the Navy working as a meteorologist and oceanographer while also earning his master’s in environmental science, Will retired in 2014 and became an air quality and environmental compliance specialist for the oil, gas and beef industries in Texas.

In 2016, while living in Amarillo, Will met Robby Staggs, a serious BBQ competitor. For the uninitiated, in the world of competition, BBQ refers to cooking meat—usually chicken, ribs, pork or brisket—all done slow and low over a fire to create distinct flavor profiles and textures within specified guidelines and rules. A panel of experts judge the results for taste, appearance and tenderness. Winners walk away with awards and cash (and big-time bragging rights).

Every Thursday evening, Robby would invite friends over to enjoy the results of his weekly practice session for an upcoming competition. The first time Will attended, Robby was perfecting his ribeye steak. “He took me under his wing and turned me onto the possibilities,” Will says with a smile, remembering how it all started.

Finally, in February 2018, Will was confident enough to enter his first competition in Shawnee, Oklahoma. “I unloaded my little grill, cooked my ribeye … and won first place.” No surprise, he was hooked. Since then, there have been many competitions and many wins. His trophies, plaques and ribbons are displayed throughout the store.

Meanwhile back in 2017, Robby had opened a successful BBQ store in Amarillo. When Will and wife Sabrina decided they wanted to do the same thing, they did a lot of research and found that Texas and other Southern locales were already saturated with similar stores.

Will, who grew up in Maineville, decided to take a closer look at his home state. The results? He found nothing in Greater Cincinnati, even as far as Columbus, like the BBQ store Will and Sabrina had in mind. The rest is history—a little more than a year after moving back to Ohio in 2023, The Ohio Barbecue Store opened for business on Beechmont Avenue in Anderson Township.

Since then, Will’s mission has been clear. “I want to support the small and large businesses throughout the country who make the rubs, sauces, BBQ tools and grills. And I want to push the hobby of barbecuing and the lifestyle that comes with it.”

So far, locals have shown they are hungry to learn more.

WHAT HAS CUSTOMERS FIRED UP

Rubs, Seasonings + Sauces:

The store carries a number of national brands, including Heath Riles, Meat Church, Kosmos Q, as well as local BBQ brands. Each has its own distinct flavor. “Meat Church is our most popular.” And Will’s go-to? “Texas barbecue really doesn’t have sauce; it’s about rubs, salt, pepper and garlic. Maybe a little paprika.”

Most Popular Grill Type:

Pellet smokers. Kansas-born Yoder Smokers and Georgia-based recteq are top brands that Will recommends. While most of his inventory is Americanmade, Kentucky’s HALO and Georgia’s recteq grills are manufactured overseas, and Napoleon gas grills are made in Canada (check out their Prestige Pro for $4,999).

Classes:

In addition to the large inventory of all things BBQ, Will offers classes monthly that cover smoking basics, barbecuing techniques, and different flavor profiles based on rubs, sauces or injections. Classes are limited to 12 participants and cost $40, which includes meat and supplies.

LEGACY IN LEATHER

HEIRLOOM LEATHER GOODS TELL THE STORY OF A LIFETIME

Loveland resident Brian Botos needed a journal to capture important ideas, essential info, and generally help keep himself more organized. But his exhaustive research on the various journals available left him less than inspired. He wanted more—he wanted better. A powerful journal with character and style that reflected his personality. One he could customize, with enough durability to last a lifetime. The answer? Craft his own.

Brian dug into every aspect of journal design. Think materials, sizes, colors, insert styles, fine details … everything. One iteration followed the next until he landed on just the write combination. A one-of-kind Italian leather journal, made entirely by hand, that he absolutely loved and could carry with him everywhere for years. A beautiful result? Absolutely, but it was only the beginning.

BOUND FOR MORE

Brian knew if he had struggled to find just the right journal, so might others … and shortly thereafter, Rustic Bound was born. Months of creative exploration and thoughtful curation later, RusticBound.com is now a jaw-droppingly inspiring destination for fine-quality, handcrafted leather goods, all made right here in Loveland. Not to mention the perfect place to shop for Father’s Day, graduation, teacher and birthday gifts that show your great care in selecting them.

We challenge you to browse this unique collection of journals, wallets, and accessories—each individually crafted using time-honored techniques by founder and owner, Brian—and not find something perfect for a gift-giving occasion (or your own collection). All made using premium, full-grain leather; all stitched by hand (Brian’s!), with no machinery utilized. Natural variations in the leather and craftsmanship mean no two pieces are exactly alike, and your gift is special to the lucky recipient (or yourself).

GIFT FOR LIFE

Brian is masterfully intentional about instilling each of his works with a sense of unrefined luxury and everyday ruggedness that makes them both incredibly comfortable to carry and everlasting. Journal entries capture lifelong moments on

“I believe every story should be captured … and you should do it in style.”

paper; equally important, the leather naturally ages with time and touch, developing a patina that tells the years-long story and personality of the individual who treasures it.

MAKE IT PERSONAL

With so many varieties, you can easily select just the right style, size, and color online. Or, if you have something extra special in mind, contact Brian directly—he’s a master with monogramming options and other ways to creatively customize your purchase.

SWEET DREAMS

NEW OWNERSHIP CARRIES ON DAIRY WHIP TRADITION

Ever since he was a kid, Luke Wiley has been obsessed with ice cream. “Even when I got older, the bar scene wasn’t really my thing,” he says with a laugh. “But when the dessert menus come out, I’m that guy.”

So it makes sense that Luke and his wife, Melissa, are proudly carrying the venerable Loveland Dairy Whip into a whole new era. In doing so, they’re mindful of many of the things that made LDW such a community favorite in the first place.

“We kept the original menu, of course,” he says. “And added a few items, if anything.”

While growing up, Luke traveled frequently as part of a military family. For the past 25 years, however, he’s called Greater Cincinnati home.

The Loveland Dairy Whip, on the other hand, opened in 1955— when ice cream stands across the country were booming and exotic flavors like pineapple had families lining up for more.

Back then, it would’ve been impossible to imagine a viral video showing off the Dairy Whip and its dancing employees, garnering a quarter million views on TikTok in the process. But, here we are. “It’s pretty wild,” Luke admits.

Before taking the plunge into a tasty world of creamy summertime delights, Luke was already known to many as a successful financial planner. For nearly 30 years, he’s been focused on helping clients “stay retired,” as he puts it—managing their retirement distribution plans. He even wrote a bestselling book about it; The 52-Week Low Formula: A Contrarian Strategy that Lowers Risk, Beats the Market, and Overcomes Human Emotion was published in 2014 and has twice been an Amazon bestseller in its wealth management section.

What’s that have to do with ice cream? Luke says that his financial acumen significantly impacted his decision to pursue the Dairy Whip.

“I study companies that have a competitive advantage,” he explains. “When I heard that the Dairy Whip was for sale, it really kind of fit into how I identify stocks for client portfolios … except it wasn’t a stock. I studied financials, met with the owners, looked at its uniqueness within the community, and its loyal customer base.”

He contacted LDW, but it was already under contract with a potential buyer. A few months later—having reflected on it more during a trip—he called them again. The rest, as they say, is (recent) history.

“I was already looking over the years for some type of family business, and the stars aligned,” he says.

But it’s the Dairy Whip’s existing recipes that are the key, Luke found, in making its products stand out from the competition. “I dug into it, and studied the ingredients … and it’s true, man,” he smiles again. “It’s literally a really, really quality product. It’s awesome, it’s the differentiator. I didn’t want to change a thing.”

For example, Luke breaks it down, vendors at a recent food expo he attended tried to talk him into saving a few bucks by going with a lower butter fat. Luke told them, “No can do.” He explains that while one well-known national chain might get away with using 4 to 5 percent butter fat, the Dairy Whip uses a full 10 percent. “So it costs me,” he admits. “It costs me more per cone, but that’s why people drive from all over the city to get our ice cream.”

Aside from maintaining integrity of the classics, a couple original items have also made a debut, including their signature new Loveland Frogman (think mint ice cream, mint chocolate cookie crumbles, amusing eyes, and even a toy frog). There’s also a dairyfree Dole Whip now on the menu, and a decadent s’mores parfait.

Patrons can also finally skip the ATM; the Loveland Dairy Whip now accepts credit cards and Apple Pay in addition to old-fashioned cash.

“I also bought 12 brand-new picnic tables,” Luke says, which is all part of his emphasis on making sure their customers see that the Dairy Whip’s new owners “really care about how we’re serving them.”

And, speaking of serving customers, the Dairy Whip brings its summertime goodness directly to customers and community events via its mobile “miniLDW” ice cream truck. Available for both public and private events, the miniLDW has recently appeared at functions for the St. Susanna Parish School and Loveland High School. “I underestimated how much increased demand we’d have for it,” Luke happily shares.

Luke also stresses that the Loveland Dairy Whip won’t be changing hands again anytime soon.

“For me, it’s a legacy,” he says. While two of his four children have already begun helping out behind the counter, he’s already envisioning grandkids pitching in, too.

CALM, COOL AND COLLECTED

If it weren’t for the striking resemblance (and same last name), you might think Drs. Tim and Andrew Kitzmiller were simply similarly minded business partners who happened to really enjoy one another’s company.

Dive deeper, and you soon realize that the CinciSmiles father-son partnership is not only real, but rare. After six years of working sideby-side, these two have created an office that goes far beyond cleanings and fillings, striving to deliver what patients really seek—the confidence to share their smile.

DR. ANDREW, DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO FOLLOW IN YOUR DAD’S FOOTSTEPS?

Andrew: Not always. I went to undergrad with the idea of going to dental school, but I also had an interest in entrepreneurship and business. I graduated with a biology degree, then spent my first year in the start-up scene honing my business, administration and sales skills.

But after being in start-ups and sales for about a year, I realized I wasn’t helping people in the role I wanted to. I saw there was a more worthwhile way of helping people and impacting their lives, so I went to dental school.

AND THEN … YOUR FIRST DAY? DESCRIBE THAT.

Andrew: It was May 13, 2019. And I remember being scared. With my very first patient, everything I learned in dental school got thrown out the window … what I thought would be ideal treatment didn’t go that way at all. I asked my dad what to do, and he said, “You fix it and good luck.” And I did.

DR. TIM, TELL US HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT WORKING WITH YOUR SON.

Tim: It’s been great watching his evolution … when Andrew first got out of dental school, he was following the rules. He’d tell me what not to do because of what he had just learned—and I’d

give him his space. In dental school, they keep you in a box of predictable conformity, but then he evolved, learning about all the possibilities. And it was liberating for him.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE COSMETIC SIDE OF YOUR DENTAL PRACTICE.

Andrew: We’ve always had it, but now it has a new twist in that we can often do all the necessary work right within our office … without the need to wait between steps or go to a specialist. Here, our cosmetic services are a part of a comprehensive approach—from a functional and health standpoint, we’re taking all those factors into consideration.

SO, WHAT CAN NEW PATIENTS EXPECT?

Andrew: There’s no cookie-cutter mold to anyone’s smile. We want to give everyone a concierge feel at the office—from the moment they first walk in through every step along the way.

Tim: That’s right—we work to give patients a realistic upgrade within realistic expectations. We treat people for who they are, and then meet them where they are. When they leave here, if someone asks how their appointment went, we want them to say, “They took the time to listen to me.”

“AT THE END OF THE DAY, WE’RE FAMILY ... AND WE DON’T LET ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS WITH OUR BUSINESS AFFECT OUR FATHER-SON RELATIONSHIP.”
- DR. ANDREW

YOU’RE REAL-WORLD EXPERTS—ANY TIPS OR TRICKS FOR BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY LIFE?

Tim: I’m really thankful all my kids like getting together with us outside of the office. At first, Andrew and I would end up talking about clinical matters … now, we can bounce things around at work, so that outside the office, we can have a different relationship. One of our guilty pleasures? We ride motorcycles together.

Andrew: The biggest thing we’ve heard from colleagues and consultants is that business is business … but at the end of the day, we’re family. And we don’t let anything that happens with our business affect our father-son relationship.

AND WHAT ABOUT FUTURE PLANS FOR CINCISMILES—WHAT COMES NEXT?

Andrew: To keep providing the best level of technology and comprehensive care.
