PHOTOGRAPHY BY LONG & FOSTER
McLean and Great Falls are more than zip codes — they're a mindset. Both areas exhibit strong demand, particularly in the luxury housing market, with homes selling swiftly and at premium prices. What’s driving such a successful market? Proximity to D.C., top-tier schools, a strong sense of community, and estates that blend traditional elegance with modern luxury. Homes are off the market in about 20 days, a clear sign that buyers are serious and the competition is fierce.
Whether you’ve lived in five houses or 15, moving and resettling always comes with challenges, especially in a location as vibrant as Northern Virginia. Whether it’s finding the right practical fit for your latest milestone in life, or simply moving to a property that feels more like home, taking this journey alone can be like stumbling through the dark. So if you're ready to buy or sell in one of the most dynamic markets on the East Coast, it’s important to have the right agent by your side. The right move starts with the right guide.
When you walk into one of Laurie Mensing’s open houses, you immediately notice her acute business sense and a deep
emotional connection to her work as a real estate agent. It’s easy to see how she is Long & Foster’s number one individual agent company wide. From growing up on the West Coast, to bouncing between houses across the globe while raising a family following her husband’s career assignments, to finally settling down in McLean, moving is in Laurie’s DNA. “I became very familiar with the process of buying and selling homes, and transitioning, and downsizing, and right sizing,” Mensing said. And not only did she have the personal experience, but she became boots on the ground for a destination services company while living in the Middle East to help other relocated families do the same.
This is what inspired her to get her real estate license, she said — “And I never looked back.”
Laurie made it clear that working with her is about finding the right fit, and forming an authentic partnership that helps you buy or sell in your best interest. Indeed, part of what makes her so successful is knowing why real estate work is her passion.
“My motivating factor was that in all those moves that we did, I never felt anyone ever cared about me, my family, my bottom line.
WORKING WITH LAURIE YOU’LL UNDERSTAND THAT THE CORNERSTONES OF HER WORK ARE TRUST AND CONFIDENTIALITY.”
“THROUGH
The emotional component, the physicality, the whole ‘It's not just a house.’ It's not just a transaction,” Mensing said.
Through working with Laurie you’ll understand that the cornerstones of her work are trust and confidentiality — in a market that can feel impersonal and riddled with competition, she is dedicated to those principles. And her work shows it, as multiple of her clients will show up to real estate events having no idea they are all working with the same agent. These client
relationships are also what keep Laurie in this area. Aside from building a life here with her own family, Mensing says, “working here in this area is so invigorating from a cerebral standpoint. And that's what I tell people when they move here, you will never live in a more cerebral environment in your entire life.”
That is what draws people to McLean and Great Falls, but it’s Laurie’s work that keeps them here. She knows you have to have empathy for every situation,
understanding both sides of the market in depth, and embracing that real estate is a truly personal business. “If you don’t have that emotional component,” says Mensing, “you’re not going to be successful.”
All industries are changing, and real estate in Northern Virginia certainly looks different than it did in 2006 when Laurie first got her license and started practicing in the area. But amidst technological developments and through global pandemics, nothing helps
establish that emotional rapport and trust like a face to face meeting. Of all her tips and tricks, Laurie was adamant about clients embracing open houses and taking chances on those in person interactions to truly get a feel for her and a house. Clients will feel that authenticity and know that Laurie doesn’t cut corners with her work — but most importantly they’ll see her passion.
“That’s what I’ll be remembered for,” Mensing said. “Is being humble and kind.”
OUR HOMES, OUR STORIES
ARTICLE BY KATIE MOORE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PEMBROOK INTERIORS
Jennifer Fordham in Home Office
There’s something about being at home that sparks the imagination. You pass through the same hallway and think, What if we painted this a color that makes us smile every time we walk by? Or you sit down in the family room and wonder why it still feels like a showroom instead of a cozy retreat. Maybe it’s bigger than that — maybe you’ve lived in your house for years, and despite your best efforts, it still doesn’t quite feel like you .
Thankfully, there are small tweaks you can make to your home to give it your own interior design makeover without starting from scratch. Instead try simple and subtle changes that have major impacts and breathe new life into your space.
Adjust the Kelvin of your lightbulbs so they both match and accentuate the warm or cool tones of your wall paint — creating cohesion that finally scratches the itch of what felt out of place. Repaint the doors in a hallway or single piece of furniture to create a statement piece that anchors the mood you want in a room. Use the outdoors as inspiration and reference exterior decor like local foliage to tie the whole house together. Paint your ceiling a light color, perhaps blue if you’re feeling bold, and pair it with a dark rug to give the illusion of a larger space, almost as if you’re outside. The contrast will actually brighten the room and give it a new aura.
Forming a vision from what you have before buying all manner of items and hoping you can stick them together may just be what transforms your space.
Our homes are our personal museums. Collections of memories made with art, furniture, prized possessions that tell the stories of who we are. But, every museum needs a curator. Someone to help us make sense of the organized chaos and keep our houses feeling like homes, not an exhibit. For that, you’ll need an industry professional — which is where Jennifer Fordham comes in.
From your first meeting with Jennifer, owner and lead designer at Pembrook Interiors, you’ll see how design is literally in her blood. Raised by women with deep roots in fashion and textiles — her grandmother a drapery seamstress, her great aunt a design pioneer at Chanel — Jennifer inherited not just a love for aesthetics, but a respect for craft. She kept this passion with her as she moved through life, reading through the entire Fairfax County Library collection on design in her spare time, all while working a full time job in public policy. Eventually, she invested full-time in her own interior design business. The result? A stellar portfolio of clients and recognition in notable design magazines.
Not only does Fordham’s past brighten her future, but allows her to, as her aunt advised all those years ago, “be the brains behind the business.” Jennifer knew that her background in planning and creating timelines would be crucial to the success of her interior design. Her work requires months of time invested into research, and acquiring all the right pieces to create a polished look that’s unique to each client without seeming out of place. “[Public policy] taught me how to imagine, to take a concept and build it out from there,” Fordham said. “And that's what interior design is: it's ideas. Yes, interior design is art, but it’s a ton of project management.”

"You can sense when things aren’t right and it affects how you are in your home." It's okay to ask for help when transforming your home into the space of your dreams.
Jennifer’s process can only be described as highly detailed, and in her own words, “collaborative.” Her in-depth questionnaire allows her to truly know her clients, as well as help them understand what’s missing from their house. “You can sense when things aren’t right and it affects how you are in your home,” says Fordham, especially when you don’t have a cohesive vision of what you want. But she is adamant about reminding customers that this doesn’t have to mean tearing it all down and starting over.
Jennifer walks her clients through their space, asking thoughtful questions: What do you love? What do you want to hold onto? What holds meaning? Her goal is always the same: to craft a home that doesn’t look ‘designed,’ but lived-in, loved, and unmistakably you . For her it’s about incorporating what you have and what's important in your home and meshing all those styles together to leave you with what you’ve always wanted your space to be. “By the time [the client and I] get to that design concept,” Fordham says regarding the finished product, “the goal is that it really looks like them.”
For Jennifer, that’s the highest form of praise: when a house is so obviously indicative of a client’s life and personal style, but it’s distinctly beyond what a non-professional could do. Jennifer’s work is deeply rooted in the science behind the art, and a dedication to hours of sourcing and polishing, all to make a house appear effortless and natural.
Yes, you can make beautiful updates to your home on your own, a few thoughtful changes can go a long way. But sometimes, when the story feels unfinished — or you’re not quite sure what chapter comes next — it helps to have someone by your side who sees the whole picture. Jennifer Fordham says she is most inspired by “when a house tells a story of the owner.” Maybe Pembrook Interiors could help your home tell yours.

MEET LOCAL ARTIST SHARON WEST
A Journey in Color, Texture, Passion
ARTICLE BY KATIE MOORE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHARON WEST
Wild Hearts Free by Sharon West
Iris Serenade by Sharon West
U.S. Capitol by Sharon West
“
“Sharon West’s journey is proof that it’s never too late to pursue your passion.”
Art has a way of calling to us, sometimes quietly and sometimes with a force that cannot be ignored. For Sharon West, that calling came later in life, but once she embraced it, there was no turning back. As an award-winning Loudoun County palette knife artist, Sharon has built a career on the power of texture and color, transforming blank canvases into dynamic, expressive works of art. Her journey from corporate marketing to full-time artist is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the courage to follow one's creative instincts.
Coming from a long family line of artists, creativity was woven into the fabric of Sharon’s upbringing. Her mother was a palette knife artist, and as a child, Sharon was surrounded by the sights, sounds, and even the distinct smells of oil paint and turpentine. Watching her mother create, she absorbed the process without realizing it, storing away the knowledge that would one day shape her own artistic journey.
Years later, with her own children grown, Sharon finally gave herself permission to explore her artistic side. She set up a makeshift studio in her bathroom, grabbed her mother’s easel, and picked up a palette knife. What started as an experiment quickly became an obsession. She fell in love with the expressive, loose nature of palette knife painting, where thick, vibrant strokes brought energy and movement to the canvas.
Her paintings began selling almost immediately. Encouraged by the response, she continued refining her technique, developing her own signature style. While still balancing her corporate job, she spent every spare moment painting, pouring her passion into each new piece.
The turning point came in 2020 when the world was shaken by the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many, Sharon found herself reassessing her life and priorities. With a deep desire to fully dedicate herself to painting, she made the bold decision to leave her corporate career behind and become a full-time artist. It was a leap of faith, but one that felt completely right.
Since then, she has never looked back. Her work has flourished, gaining recognition through awards, exhibitions, and a growing base of collectors drawn to the rich texture and emotion in her pieces. In particular she loves capturing local Washington D.C. area scenes such as springtime cherry blossoms, the rolling hills of wineries, horses, foxes, and river and waterfall scenes. (See her Heavenly Fairway piece on the cover of this issue.)
Sharon's palette knife technique allows her to create art that feels alive — thick, sculptural strokes bring depth and vibrancy to every piece. She blends impressionistic influences with bold color choices, ensuring that each painting carries undeniable energy.
Sharon West’s journey is proof that it’s never too late to pursue your passion. What began as a childhood fascination eventually became a full-fledged career — one that brings joy not only to her but to the collectors who resonate with her work.
As she continues to grow and evolve as an artist, one thing remains constant: her love for color, texture, and the expressive power of art. With each painting, she invites viewers to experience the energy, beauty, and vibrancy of the world through her eyes.
SCOTT STALLINGS’ WORKOUT
Like many impressionable kids with giddy enthusiasm for their favorite sport, Scott Stallings discovered his interest for golf at the young age of 3.
But it was the “aha moment” for his LOVE of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors.
Upon realizing “that Woods wasn’t that much older than him,’’ Scott set himself into overdrive to “get it together” and tapped into his natural drive to be one of the best.
He trained his way through achieving allstate golfer and Dean’s List status in high school. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer.
In 2016 he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete.
“ GOLF IS A GRIND, BUT DON’T LET PHYSICALITY GET IN THE WAY OF YOUR GAME .”
With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night.
“I came to the realization that it was no one’s fault but my own. The excuses and finger pointing led back to me, and once you take ownership, you take power in that,” Scott says.
“The voice within gave me some scary realizations that I always hated the doctor, and that they would tell me something was wrong. I learned a little information goes a long way, and that saved my health. Make one change today, and make another one tomorrow, and you’ll never look back.”
Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed.
“You only get one body,” he says.
Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life.
He still was driven to be one the best PGA Tour players and the best family guy he could be, and he would do all of the discovery, the surgeries, and the daily changes all over again to continue living his best life.
“I legitimately have some great people push me and stay around me,” Scott says.
Scott has traveled the world over, playing on some of the best courses around, from Augusta National twice, to courses across Asia, Europe, Australia, and the hope to cross the Middle East and more stunning destinations in New Zealand off his global travel list. His next “bucket list” trip?
Today, Scott happily shares healthy time with his wife and kids and is leading up The Scott Stallings Kids Play Free Junior Golf Initiative, a partnership with the Tennessee Golf Foundation to bring free junior golf to the Knoxville area.
THE WORKOUT BASICS :
KETTLEBELLS
Cast iron or cast steel ball with a handle attached to the top; ideal for exercises that combine cardio, strength and flexibility training.
BARS AND WEIGHTS
A long iron bar on which weight plates are placed. Weights come in a variety of styles, including weight plates, barbells and dumbbells.
DUMBBELLS
Short barbells, usually held in each hand
MEDICINE BALLS
Weighted balls roughly the diameter of the shoulders that are used for strength training and rehabilitation
STALLINGS’ PRIMARY EQUIPMENT: HIS TOP EXERCISES:
KETTLEBELL POWER SNATCH:
Uses ground force to leverage the kettlebell upward, then the shoulder, arm and back support the weight as it gets pushed overhead. Also a great cardio exercise and trains the body for a good golf swing.
KETTLEBELL HALO:
Start by holding the kettlebell upside down at chest height, then lift the weight to head height and rotate it around the head like a halo in both directions. This exercise focuses on shoulder mobility— which is important for a good golf swing— and warms up the muscles and soft tissue around the shoulder girdle.
CLEAN TO LUNGE:
First, the kettlebell is lifted from the ground to shoulder height. Then, the foward lunge loads weight into the legs one at a time, which happens from the backswing to the downswing. The exercise increases strength in calves and forearms, which is essential for a powerful swing.

USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.
A good barbecue sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.
SOMETHING SWEET
This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.
SOMETHING TANGY
Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.
SOMETHING SPICY
This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.
SOMETHING LIQUID
It can be beer, water, chicken stock, soda, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.
SOMETHING TOMATO
You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.
THE SPICE COMBINATION
This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.
