The Men's Issue

The Men's Issue

Welcome to our Men’s issue! As we celebrate Father’s Day this month, I’m reflecting on things I learned from the men in my life while I was growing up in Minnesota. I learned a lot from my father: a work ethic, stability, the reward of things needed but entitled and humor. My dad has a wonderful sense of humor and the gift of being an amazing storyteller. I often thought that if he hadn’t been a CPA, standup would have been his second calling.
From my grandfathers: one demonstrated the virtue of calm and patience and was taken from me too soon. The other was bigger than life to me and appreciated everything he had been blessed with in his life. He loved food. I never saw anyone appreciate a meal so much. He fished and shared his wisdom readily to a grandson who was all ears. No matter what, they shaped me.
Men in our lives, whether they are fathers, coaches, teachers, pastors, or even our sons, have impacted our lives, and we thank them for everything they do.
This month, we wanted to spotlight several men and businesses in our community who are making a difference. In this issue, Randy Stodola owner of Permanent Coating Solutions, weighs in on what most men only dream of: a Man Cave. We also get a chance to highlight three local taprooms and investigate what might ‘Ale’ you. This month, we also get to tell the story of two basketball buddies who built a business together with Edward Jones. Finally, our columnist, Jen Fortner, sums it all up in Life Minded with a look at Father’s Day in all its imperfect reality.
So, before the month slips away, let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to saythank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you, as well as the community around you.
Happy Father’s Day!

Flipping the calendar to June always makes me think about the end of the school year. Graduations, tournament games and final performances, big tests
and me releasing my useless grip on micromanaging kid homework, closing out of one rhythm and beginning a summer rhythm. And somewhere in the middle of all that, our household needs to jam in a meaningful Father’s Day.
It’s not easy.
If I put myself in my husband’s shoes and imagine an ideal day from his perspective, it might include a family day of fishing on a quiet lake. He’d like lunch
Life Minded
that includes sushi but also cheese balls. He would enjoy a luxurious nap not interrupted by a barking dog and appreciate nobody wasting money on cheap socks that feature a dad joke. But putting together that day and executing it with all the personalities involved? Well, there are better odds of us being struck by lightning while fishing. My husband will not see a nice, quiet lake day because he has not been blessed with a nice, quiet family.
He, like many fathers, has ended up with a plethora of useless gifts collected over time. Ties. Socks. Fishing equipment he should have picked out himself. Handmade clay objects that required far too much explanation. Clothing he doesn’t want. Coupons for chores that will never be redeemed. The list is long but heartfelt. The best Father’s Day gift we ever gave him, bar none, was a black leather Lazy Boy Recliner. Is it beautiful? No. Does it contribute to a more pleasing room aesthetic? No. Has he sat in it 50,000 times? Yes.
So, it may not be about the tangible but more about the intangibles. Just being together under any circumstances. Any circumstances. We can’t guarantee to make it special. We can only guarantee to make it memorable.
A few years ago, we had a quieter Father’s Day at home and grilled on our deck. People were crabby (I won’t name names). I couldn’t get the crowd under control. Then conversation picked up, and I had a glimmer of hope. But then it took a weird turn as the kids fixated on whether or not Dad had ever punched anyone in the face. It turns out we all learned something interesting that day. He had. In 7th grade. Our kids were delighted with this revelation, if not slightly disappointed it was his only violent act. In moments like this, I always wonder what the normal families talk about over burgers.
Last year, on Father’s Day, we were flying to a lacrosse tournament in Colorado for our youngest son. My husband told me to sit with our son, and he would sit alone in the bulkhead seat. His sacrifice did not go
unpunished. It was a disaster. He ended up sitting next to an eightypound service dog. The dog sat on my husband’s foot and spewed his hot breath into his face for the duration of the flight. I’d like to say we were sympathetic, but my son and I were two rows behind him across the aisle, and we cried laughing watching this unfold. We took pictures.
Such is the work of fatherhood. Taking one for the team. Managing mayhem. Enduring the crises. Eating the leftovers. Absorbing the metaphorical dog breath so others can be spared and enjoy clean air.
To all the fathers and father figures out there…we know you’d love peace and quiet for one complete day. We would love to honor that. But it isn’t going to happen. It’s just not in the cards, but ironically, you will get a lot of handmade cards. So, can we interest you in a funny graphic t-shirt or some hot sauce that will make you ill? If not, we know you will do your best to act like it was exactly what you were hoping for all along.

ANATOMY OF A MAN CAVE
Unearth your ultimate man cave with function and design by Permanent Coating Solutions
ARTICLE BY EMILY MCKEEVER PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIA CLAIRE PHOTOGRAPHYEveryone has heard the term man cave, but what started in the late 20th century with a couple of average joes, Bob and Stanley, sitting in an unfinished basement on an old ratty couch under a couple of neon beer signs has evolved into so much more. Throughout history, men have searched for spaces to retreat to for male conversation and recreation, perhaps in their actual cave, enjoying a quiet nap on a bed of leaves and grass, or much (much) later at pubs, social clubs, and lodges. The man caves we’re all familiar with gained traction as suburban living grew in popularity and the average home square footage began to increase, allowing for these testosterone territories to be right in his very own backyard or tucked in the shadows of the basement. And what’s happened since? Well, let’s just say (man) caves have come a long way from dirt floors and petroglyphs.

Randy Stodola, owner of Permanent Coating Solutions, has played a part in making many a man cave sparkle, and after learning more about how he and his team can elevate your space, you’ll be motivated to toss that thrifted couch to the curb and get to work. “Right now, the most popular flooring options for man caves are the resinous systems, with Metallic Epoxy, Full Flake, and Colored Quartz being the most common.” He says they’re the best all-around value for the money, being both aesthetically pleasing and functional. “They’re very decorative, and there are literally hundreds of options to choose from. They can also be customized to match existing colors or themes, which we do at no additional charge to our clients.”

He shares that one exciting, personalized detail they can incorporate into their projects is embedding logos in the floor coating. Randy says clients often opt for their top sports team, favorite car or truck brand, preferred tractor, or beer of choice. These floor coatings provide a decorative look, but they’re also abrasion and chemical-resistant with choices of gloss or high-wear satin finishes.
Permanent Coating Solutions also offers numerous storage solutions because who wants to be tripping over clutter on the way to the fridge? “I learn what the client’s needs and budget are, and from there, our team develops a customized package.” Randy also takes time to understand the basics. Is the client open to wallboard storage solutions where bikes, shovels, garden tools, and more can be hung? If so, a slate wall is a good option that comprises different sizes and types of hanging hooks, which then makes hanging baskets a possibility for holding balls, gloves, and other miscellaneous items. If the client would rather have a neat and clean look, they begin talking cabinets: uppers, lowers, tall, or a healthy mix of all three. “We can also do custom workbenches with butcher blocks, Formica, or metal tops and can integrate custom lighting into the cabinets and workbenches as well."
So, there you have it. After you get your Full Flake flooring installed (insert go-to beer logo here), along with the wall of cabinets with custom lighting, you’re ready to start decking out your new favorite room. Will you decide to roll a fancy new pool table into your garage-turned-dude den? For football games, a big-screen TV is essential, and what will you fill that empty corner of space with? Retro is back, and along with it comes arcade machines or take the cool factor up a notch and install a merchandiser fridge! When it’s time for dinner, simply open the garage door and go all caveman, grilling up some hearty meats served with a healthy helping of rustic potatoes and some root vegetables straight from the Stone Age… Bob and Stanley will love it. https://www.permanentcoatingsolutions.org/

USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.
A good barbecue sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.
SOMETHING SWEET
This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.
SOMETHING TANGY
Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.
SOMETHING SPICY
This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.
SOMETHING LIQUID
It can be beer, water, chicken stock, soda, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.
SOMETHING TOMATO
You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.
THE SPICE COMBINATION
This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.

HOMEMADE

LOCAL CRAFT BEER COMPANIES THAT ARE BREWED WITH BOLDNESS AND POURED TO PERFECTION

It’s no secret that craft beer companies are thriving. They’re more than just a place to drink beer. They're a destination. They feature local artisans, food trucks, game nights, and live music. They release seasonal brews, offer innovative flavor combinations, and often source local ingredients. If you’re a craft beer enthusiast, you’re probably no stranger to the breweries in our community. And even if you aren’t a regular, you’ll likely find that you don’t need to love craft beer to find value in these venues.
Waconia Brewing Company is family-owned and operated and is celebrating its 10-year anniversary later this year. As their motto suggests, approachable beers by approachable people, this brewery is all about customer service and a family-friendly atmosphere. The DeLange family likes to make sure their customers never feel intimidated or overwhelmed by their beer. The staff prides themselves on being knowledgeable and welcoming. There is no dumb question when someone sits down and wants to know more about craft beer. Their goal is to educate and help the patron find their favorite flavor.
WBC’s taproom is home to five flagship beers that have been brewing since the beginning and are always in season. They also rotate 7-10 seasonal brews that complement the calendar. Not into beer? Try their seltzer or a refreshing seltzer slushy for those warmer days.
If you’ve ever visited their space, you’re familiar with their patio during warmer weather and their cozy fireplace for cooler temps. You might also know they partner with various organizations and clubs in the community and provide an opportunity for charitable events. Want to bring the whole crew? Check out their calendar for a Sunday fun day with the family where kids can enjoy their own slushy, root beer, coloring, and games. You’ll also find other events like food trucks, painting, charcuterie boards, and fundraisers that allow you to pair philanthropy with a perfect pour!

Schram Haus Brewery is the result of a successful hobby that originally started at Schram Vineyards. As popular as their wines, the craft brews proved to be standalone champions, and in 2019, they moved into their own establishment in downtown Chaska. This brewery sits on three acres overlooking the Minnesota River Valley. The bluffs create a beautiful backdrop for an outdoor space that hosts two large events each year. You may have just visited in April for their annual GOAT FEST, or you might be familiar with OKTOBIERFEST, held each year in September. If not, add them to your list!
One of the most unique aspects of this brewery is its accessibility to a winery. The connection to their original vineyard home allows head brewmaster Brian VanHout the opportunity to play with equipment and barrels to create small batches with specialty flavors. Think hybrid recipes that combine wine with beer, such as their exclusive rosé-champagne mixed with a lager that’s released on New Year’s.
A love for the local leads the way. Since their intent is to connect with the community, you will find their calendar filled with a variety of events and opportunities to sip, savor, and socialize: trivia nights, bean bag tournaments, painting nights, food trucks, a maker’s market, and of course, live music. There is no shortage of fun or flavor. Schram Haus offers a selection of brews and seltzers that you just won’t find anywhere else. From light to hoppy to dark and fruity. They harvest locally sourced ingredients like plums from abandoned fruit trees in the area, even dandelions in a field nearby!

ENKI Brewery began in what was once the Victoria Creamery. However, it didn’t take long until they outgrew that space and moved just down the street, where they now sit near the shores of Stieger Lake. It’s a renovated warehouse that provides an open atmosphere with an intimate industrial feel. It’s the perfect place for trivia, date night, or a group just looking to unwind from a long day. Its ownership was created out of a passion for the pint and its people. They aim to make good beer and great friends.
ENKI’s offerings are always changing, and their taproom is a spectrum of brews, including light and golden, IPA’s, sours, wheat ale, pilsner, and stout. And if you have an affection for coffee, you might love their popular Mocha Porter, created with cold-press coffee.
This brewery is more than your typical taproom. One of the unique features is their on-site event center. Imagine hosting a business meeting, reception, or family celebration with their handcrafted beers served at your private bar. Big or small, ENKI is a gathering place for friends and family to delight in diverse and delicate flavor profiles.
Discover a new [local] place with your people. Visit Chaska, Victoria, or Waconia and see what sets each one apart. We can assure you that all these breweries tell a unique story, so saddle up and cheerfully enjoy a hoppy taste in a happy place!

WHAT’S NEW IN WACONIA
Out with neck ties, in with self-care. Help Dad get a little TLC this Father’s Day with these local picks
ARTICLE BY EMILY MCKEEVERHe’s strong. He’s sweet. He’s protective. If you’re lucky, the dad in your life is a perfect combination of these and so much more. And this guy. He just knows things. Sometimes, it’s exactly what you need (can we get an amen for all the car genius dads out there?), and sometimes, it’s a random fact coming entirely out of left field. Did you know that the unicorn is Scotland’s national animal? It feels strangely useful, though, doesn’t it? Knowing is most definitely a dad’s superpower, and for all that shared wisdom, he deserves a reward. Aftershave? Sure. But what about something more memorable? Maybe you’ll use this list as a gift guide for Father’s Day, or maybe you’re a dad reading this and thinking, “I do deserve it!” The goal here is to give Dad some respite. But not from the knowing; no, that’s a built-in feature.
A classic straight razor shave at Waconia Barbers. This modern space is a superb locale for Dad to feel doted on. The inviting and sunny atmosphere, not to mention the talented barbers, will leave him feeling lighter and amply spoiled.
An Old Fashioned at The Brass Hat. Or, if he’s a beer or wine drinker, you’ll find a selection here as well. Pick your delicious poison at this classy, dimly lit speakeasy located downstairs from Bode Gray’s. The vibe here is almost a gift in itself.
Schedule a 1:1 Peer Support hour at The Hive with Revive with Randy. Dads take on a lot, and time devoted to talking things out with a trusted professional could be just what the doctor ordered. Give the gift of a therapeutic journey.
Choose from Balance Life Wellness’s massage menu. Relieve muscle tension, reduce pain, enhance flexibility, need we go on? Under the word massage in the dictionary, there must be a sentence that says, “The best way to enjoy self-care.”
A day with the guys playing 18 holes at Island View Golf Club. A gorgeous course, a warm day, physical activity, and bragging rights if he emerges victorious. He’ll be thirsty, so drinks out back with a picturesque view of the lake will be an extra treat.
Quality time spent at Churchills Quality Cigars & Gifts, and a cigar or two, of course. We know, we know, they’re not the healthiest, but Churchills isn’t just a shop, it’s an experience. Dad can choose a cigar of his liking from their variety-filled humidor and then hang out in the lounge or game room. Smoking jacket optional.
Spirits from J. Carver Distillery. Slip an award-winning bottle of Bourbon or Single Malt Whiskey into a “Dad, You Rock” gift bag, or go even further and mix a cocktail for him using a recipe on J. Carver’s website. Then, pick up some polish for your Golden Child crown.
Grilling meats from The Butcher’s Deli. If you have a grill master in your midst, a stop at The Butcher’s Deli is a must. They have numerous cuts of fresh meat to choose from, along with delicious sides that will accompany any celebratory Father’s Day meal.
Dinner at Buddy Boy’s BBQ. Crunchy coleslaw, sizzling brisket, collard greens, and charbroiled oysters—nothing says love like a manly meat fest at this newly expanded BBQ joint. Choose from their bustling indoor space or fun outdoor venue.
Set a family date night for bowling at Garage Bar & Bowl. Now and again, quality time is the best gift to give for inner nourishment and a refreshing break from the chaos of life. Lace-up those bowling shoes, place an order of cheese curds and a Poutine Pizza (trust me), and have fun!

THE JOURNEY OF FRIENDSHIP, SUCCESS, AND HOOPS AT EDWARD JONES
From Basketball to Business

“
“Ryan and I have been able to create awesome chemistry on the court which has translated to an incredible relationship, both professionally and as friends.”
In 2012, Ryan Pederson began his career with Edward Jones in Waconia, a city that, at the time, was new to both him and his new wife, Jamie. He started by walking door-to-door, introducing himself and the services he offered to community members. Now, in 2024, his business has grown significantly thanks to his diligence, passion, and commitment to his clients. With this growth came a need to add another financial advisor to his practice - or should we say… team.
About 8 years ago, former college basketball players Andy Jones and Ryan met at a Tuesday evening basketball league and hit it off. Since they laced up their sneakers for that first face-off at Excelsior Covenant Church, they’ve bonded over their love of the game. This shared passion has led to a strong friendship, and these days, they find themselves sharing the floor as business partners at Edward Jones.
On and off the court, Andy and Ryan are unstoppable. While they each bring their unique qualities and strengths to the business, the client-focused teamwork you’ll find at 641 Marketplace is one you want on your roster.
ANDY, WELCOME TO WACONIA! TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
My wonderful wife, Rachel, and I live in Victoria. We are deeply involved with Grace Church and love finding opportunities to spend quality time with friends and family. I was raised in Excelsior, graduated from Minnetonka High School, and then moved on to St John’s University, where I also played basketball. I’ve spent the majority of my professional career on the acquisition side of sales, but when an opportunity arose to build a business with one of my best friends, Ryan, I had to take it.
HOW HAS YOUR RELATIONSHIP EVOLVED OVER THE PAST 8 YEARS?
Andy: Ryan has become one of my best friends. When initially meeting anyone new on the basketball court, I tend to be a bit overly competitive, which typically isn’t conducive to a healthy friendship. Over the past 8 years or so, Ryan and I have been able to create awesome chemistry on the court which has translated to an incredible relationship, both professionally and as friends.
Ryan: Our relationship has primarily evolved from spending time playing basketball on Tuesdays to becoming great friends off the court, where we’ve connected over our shared passions of faith and finances.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO WORK TOGETHER?
Andy: Ryan has been blessed to build an outstanding business through hard work and dedication to his craft and clients. As a result, he needed to be thoughtful about scaling his business in a way that wouldn’t negatively impact any of those relationships. The thought behind adding me to the team was to elevate the client relationships by working as partners to ensure each client would receive top-tier service.
Ryan: My business had grown to the point where I needed help to maintain the high level of service we provide our clients. When considering adding another financial advisor to our office, I was very particular about the type of person I was looking for. Andy met all of the qualities on my list and he was in a place professionally where he was ready for a change, so it was the perfect timing and fit.
WHAT QUALITIES DOES THE OTHER BRING TO YOUR PROFESSIONAL PARTNERSHIP?
Andy: Ryan is a seasoned veteran who displays a tremendous amount of industry knowledge, empathy, and intentionality with his clients. When planning your financial future, these qualities are ingredients for an excellent experience.
Ryan: Andy brings a high level of integrity, which is the most important quality a financial advisor needs to have. Our clients walk away knowing they are working with someone who truly cares for them and has their best interests in mind.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR FRIENDSHIP WITH YOUR PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP?
Andy: Honestly, it’s very easy. We disagree on very few things. So long as we’re striving toward an agreed-upon goal, business cohesion is second nature.
Ryan: Working together has been a great experience so far. It makes coming to the office fun every day, and it gives me a huge peace of mind to know that our clients are well taken care of by one of my best friends, whom I completely trust.
HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR SHARED HISTORY IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL HAS CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR SUCCESS IN WORKING TOGETHER?
Andy: Business is, in many ways, the same as any sport. We have desired outcomes we’re striving to achieve, and to perform at a caliber that’s beneficial to our clients, we need to make daily adjustments.
The beauty of our business is that winning isn’t exclusive to us – it’s client-focused. When our clients win, so do we. Because of this, our daily challenge is to work towards achieving our clients’ goals. Our success is a product of our clients’ victories.
Ryan: I think our shared college basketball experiences gave us the level of discipline and hard work that is required to maintain and grow a high-performing business, and as a result, we continually strive to find ways to exceed our clients’ expectations and elevate their experience with us.
WHAT SKILLS OR LESSONS FROM YOUR BASKETBALL DAYS DO YOU APPLY TO YOUR CURRENT WORK?
Andy: The team is more valuable than the individual. To be successful, selfishness has to be removed from the equation. In basketball, all five players on the court need to be on the same page. The same can be applied to our business. We must deeply understand client wants, wishes, needs, and goals, and work as a team to pursue those ends.
Ryan: We both played the game at a high level, which takes many years of discipline and hard work. We each bring those same qualities to work every day and strive to provide the highest level of service and expertise for our clients.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS AS A PROFESSIONAL TEAM?
Andy: We would love to reach as many people in the community as possible. Everyone can benefit from a tangible plan – investing to achieve financial goals is no different.

Ryan: Our business has been growing rapidly, and at some point in the near future, we have aspirations to move into a new permanent, multi-advisor office here in Waconia that will allow us to continue to serve our clients at the highest level.

Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
ARTICLE BY DANIEL SCHOWENGERDT01.
Get fit for equipment.
If you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.
Perfecting Your Golf Swing

02.
Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:
Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz
Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs
Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
03.
Practice your short game every day.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.

Select your greenway (winery and/or golf course) and grab your friends, family, and neighbors for “Par & Pairings” fun. The celebration kicks off with a cornhole tournament at the winery, followed by food and drink, games, and activities, and closes with an evening ABBA/Elton John tribute concert.

Your Boat Club:
We boating! are
These late-model, meticulously maintained fishing boats, ski boats, and pontoons have served our members well. Most of our boats have been in service for only three years and are regularly detailed and refurbished. It is simply time to replace them with brand-new models and find them a new home!
The average age of our fleet is 1.5 years old- meaning our members- and you- get to experience the newest boats in the market. Because our boats are in service, they are cared for better than the average boat.
Especially after the initial depreciation, boats tend to hold their value extremely well. If you are considering buying a boat, why not eliminate the risk of overpaying and save all of that expense?
When it comes to your family’s next great adventure, you can trust Your Boat Club. With decades of experience and an unmatched love for boating, you can rely on us. We are boating! Find out more at www.YourBoatClub.com/buy-a-boat today!
