Celebrating Women

I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. Our wives, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.
And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities.
Tulsa women are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

Simpler Thymes Farmstead is a micro-farm located in Bixby, OK. In addition to growing beautiful farm fresh specialty flowers, the farm is quickly becoming a destination for U-Pick flower events, educational workshops, private parties, pop-up events with other local businesses, and photo sessions with Lil’ Red, a bright red vintage Chevy pickup truck. Farmstead owner, Shawna Poindexter, is a successful mom, wife, business owner, and lifelong country girl that loves digging in the earth and growing beautiful flowers to bring joy to everyone she meets. Here are her tips for making the perfect flower arrangement and keeping it fresh for as long as possible.
1. CHOOSE A VESSEL
Choosing a vessel may be one of the most important steps. It should be something sturdy that will be a strong base for your arrangement. Make sure to thoroughly clean it prior to use. Explore your home for unconventional options such as mason jars, ironstone, enamelware, galvanized tins, and ceramic bowls.
2. PREPARE THE FLOWERS
Upon bringing your flowers home, trim 1-2 inches off the stems and place them in fresh cold water to rest for a couple of hours before arranging. Once it is time to arrange the flowers, fill your vessel with clean cool water and flower food.
3. BUILD A BASE
Start by building a base with your greenery, followed by adding in your focal flowers such as tulips, sunflowers, roses, and dahlias. Then add smaller filler flowers and textural details to fill in the gaps. Remember when adding these, place them at an angle to create a dome feel.
4. GET CREATIVE
To create a more aesthetically pleasing arrangement, stick to odd numbers of 3 or 5 of each flower variety. Some fun additions to add texture, dimension, and aroma are cherry branches, flower buds, and herbs such as lemon thyme or cinnamon basil.
5. TAKE CARE
Now that your blooms are ready for you to enjoy, remember to change out the water every 1-2 days, add more flower food, and keep away from bright sunlight and ripening fruit.
“My hope for Simpler Thymes Farmstead is to use what we have to build community and bring joy to others, whether it is a small flower bouquet, fresh eggs, or raw local honey,”
– Shawna Poindexter
Nothing makes a home feel more inviting and cheerful than a bouquet of freshly cut and beautifully arranged blooms.

Tracing separate property or assets in a divorce can be an important issue for lots of individuals. Take a situation where somebody has a 401k or IRA before marriage. They have put money into this account before marriage.
They then get married. After marriage, they continue to contribute to this 401k or IRA. At this point, pre-marital separate funds and marital funds are being mixed.
The parties then file for divorce. In these situations, the one spouse is often asking that the entire 401k or IRA be divided in the divorce. The spouse who had funds in these accounts before marriage argues that the pre-marital por-
tion should be set aside to them entirely. And they argue that only the funds put in during the marriage should be divided through the divorce.
The reality, however, is that the separate funds need to be traced out from the account. This often requires a forensic accountant reviewing statements and doing an analysis to determine the amount that was in these accounts during the marriage.
At a minimum, parties may need to subpoena the statements from the date of the marriage to try to determine the amount that was in there. However, it can often be hard to obtain statements at the exact date of the marriage.
In addition to 401ks or IRAs, tracing can be important for other assets like bank
accounts, investment accounts, whole life insurance policies, and other assets where a party might have built up cash value before marriage. In some instances, a party might consider having a prenuptial agreement drafted before getting married.

Every weekend, from April 29th through June 4th, journey to 1569 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1 at The Castle of Muskogee’s Renaissance Festival located at 3400 W. Fern Mountain Road. Join the celebration as Elizabeth 1 entertains royal guests from Avalon, France, Spain, Scotland, Rome, and the Spice Roads.

Everyone is encouraged to join the whimsical celebration of Oberon's pilgrimage. Faeries and other mythical creatures may show themselves during this opening weekend of the festival.
May 6th - 7th is Romance weekend with a visit from King Henri of France. He’s the son of the Contessa De Medici, has ties to Italy, but is French at heart. He visits to steal the heart of her Majesty, and all of the ladies of Castleton. This entire weekend is about love and kindness toward all with The Masque Ball held on Saturday evening.
May 13th - 14th the Spanish Armada arrives as Her Majesty hosts King Phillip of Spain, bringing an invasion of pirates, privateers and scallywags. All of Castleton is invited to don their best buccaneer attire. This is also the weekend of the very popular Pirate's Feaste, so book your seats now.
May 20th - 21st, one of Castleton's dearest and closest of friends, Queen Mary of Scotland visits the festival. We adore our Scottish heritage, so it is of no surprise this weekend is rowdy and full of activities. Don your clan and press your kilts for Celtic festivities.
May 27th - 29th we raise our steins for the arrival of his Imperial Majesty Charles II of the Holy Roman Empire. This is a three-day celebration over Memorial Day Weekend. Queen Elizabeth is delighted to secure this alliance, so we look forward to a beautiful weekend of Oktoberfest level fun. Monday is the Memorial Day Parade, an event not to be missed. In honor of those who have fallen, this festival staple provides a day of reverence in honor of our soldiers, beautiful photo ops and an emotional occasion unlike any other of the festival.
June 3rd - 4th brings the flare of The Spice Roads with the arrival of the Sultan of the Solomon Empire, King Omari. His alliance would mean wealth, commerce and further opportunities. In honor of his visit, we encourage breaking tradition and celebrating our closing weekend in a big way.

Though the Route 66 Native Arts Alliance’s Vault Gallery is housed in an unassuming former bank building on Oklahoma Highway 66, it is far from tame. On exhibit is a vibrant collection of paintings, sculptures, digital art, woodcarvings, furniture, leatherwork, and unique goods by both seasoned and burgeoning Native American artists from across the country. These artists act as cultural ambassadors of their tribes and serve to educate us on the unique histories and experiences of Native communities, explains founding member and President Betsy Swimmer.
In its short life, the volunteer-run organization has made remarkable strides in promoting Native art and artisans by hosting art shows and artist previews as well as Native ceremonies and special presentations. The Alliance has recently announced a trip to Ireland in 2024 to visit the “Kindred Spirits” Sculpture that honors the generosity of the Choctaw Nation during the Great Famine.
We spoke with two extraordinary artists featured at the Vault Gallery.
The Route 66 Native Arts Gala & Fashion Show on July 14, 2023, will feature Choctaw artist Gwen Coleman Lester as the Alliance’s Artist of the Year. This Claremore-based Master Artist specializes in paintings, drawings and pyrography of Native culture and wildlife.
Gwen’s works have been showcased at museums and art festivals throughout the country, including the Santa Fe Indian Market, Five Civilized Tribes Museum, Cherokee Art Market, Choctaw Cultural Center, and at the first festival of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. Her Choctaw Code Talker painting also graces the nose of an F-15 fighter jet based in Oregon.
Gwen will represent the Choctaw Nation when the Alliance visits Cork, Ireland in 2024 to view the “Kindred Spirits” Sculpture. The sculpture honors the generosity of the Choctaw Nation during the Great Famine of 1847.
Celebrated Cherokee painter Ron Mitchell began teaching his granddaughter Anita about art at a young age, but the sixteen-year-old has already made a name for herself in the art community. She has received numerous awards for her thought-provoking digital art pieces and garnered a loyal social media following.
Anita Mitchell enjoys exploring artistic mediums and learning the “business side” of art from her grandfather, who explains that her art is “as modern as today but drawn from inspirations that link to the past.”
“IT IS SO IMPORTANT THAT WE GET YOUNGER GENERATIONS INVOLVED IN PRESERVING OUR CULTURE.”
- BETSY SWIMMER, ALLIANCE PRESIDENT

If you’re ready to change the shape and shade of your teeth or correct minor misalignment, crowns or veneers are a great option. Both can be made to match your existing teeth if you only want to change a few of them, or they can be made to change your whole smile.
The main difference between a crown and a veneer is that a crown covers your whole tooth, front, back, and sides. A veneer covers mainly the front surface of your tooth- so they’re used
on the teeth that show when you smile. Some veneers can wrap around the sides of the teeth to give the veneer more surface to hold onto for stability.
Both can be used cosmetically to change the look of your smile, but most of the time veneers are used for strictly cosmetic purposes and crowns are used when the tooth has decay or if you’re a heavy grinder at risk of popping veneers off.
Both are made of porcelain, which is durable and looks very natural.
At our office, once you’ve decided to go ahead with your smile makeover, we’ll have a design consultation with you to determine what you want your smile to look like. We’ll take lots of photos as well as a diagnostic impression or digital scan of your teeth.
We’ll make a mock-up of your new smile so you can see what your teeth will look like before we prepare them for your final crown or veneers. At this point, any changes that you might want to make to the shape or size of the teeth will be made. We’ll also use the mock-up to create your temporary crown or veneers, so you can live in your new smile while your permanent crown or veneers are being made.
Once you’ve tested your new smile and are satisfied with how everything looks, we’ll make your permanent restorations. While your new smile is being made, you’ll be living in “temporaries.”
When your crowns or veneers are ready, we’ll take off your temporaries and place the permanent ones. Voila! You now have a beautiful new smile!
HOW LONG WILL THIS PROCESS TAKE?
Creating a new smile can take a while and we want you to be happy with yours. Most cases can take up to a month to complete, so keep that in mind when looking to change your smile before an event, like a wedding, or traveling. There will be multiple appointments and you may have to be numb for more than one appointment.
WILL MY NEW CROWNS OR VENEERS BE LIKE REAL TEETH?
While crowns and veneers are very strong, they can still break, chip, or pop off. As we do with real teeth, we highly recommend not using your front teeth to bite into hard foods or use them to tear open things.
We may also require that you get a nightguard or plastic retainer to protect your teeth at night if you are a grinder or clencher. For Tulsa City Lifestyle readers, Perfect Smile Tulsa is offering a special price on smile makeovers. When you’re ready to freshen up your smile, give them a call at 918-863-2474 and mention this article. perfectsmiletulsa.com
Blair Moore has loved all things fashion from a young age. The Nashville native studied Fashion Merchandising and Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in the fashion capital of the world, New York City. It was inevitable the mother of three would find herself in a career where she would help other women find their confidence through their wardrobe. Blair says, “I love helping women find their true personal style and get them organized in their closet so they feel truly empowered to get dressed each day with ease and confidence!” Blair shares four trends for spring and how to incorporate them into your wardrobe.
This season, bright colors such as hot pink and kelly green are trending. I know this can be difficult for my neutral-loving ladies, so I always recommend starting small. Choose a fun, colorful earring or add a bold clutch to brighten up your look. You can also have fun with your shoes by adding a colorful heel or sandal to a dress or denim outfit.
From floral midi dresses to feminine floral blouses, this season is all about flower power. Choose a flowy floral skirt and pair it with your favorite knotted tee and sandals for an effortless look. Tip: If wearing a dress with a large floral print, try adding a denim jacket, light cardigan or woven belt to add texture and break up the print.
From casual jogger sets to feminine tiered skirts and puff-sleeved tops, two-piece sets are everywhere! What I adore about twopiece sets is that you can wear them in multiple ways. Wear it as a set or take the top and pair it with denim, or take the skirt and pair it with a tee and light jacket or blazer. Two pieces, but multiple ways to wear them!
Let me be clear — I LOVE a skinny jean and always will! But the 90s denim trend is having a moment and if you want to embrace it, here are a couple of tips: Choose a fit that is high-rise with a more relaxed fit through the leg. You want the jean to fall right above the ankle bone. This is slimming and flattering to the eye. Pair with a strappy heel, sneaker or slide.

Edit down your closet. Ask yourself these three things: Do you still like it? Does it fit within reason? Is it still in good condition? If the answer is no, it’s time to donate or sell that item. Keep a donation basket in your closet to help you stay on track.
Buy something new, get rid of something old. Each time you buy a new item, get rid of an item in your closet. This manages the chaos of having too many options in your closet. We only wear about 20% of the items in our closet, so make a list before shopping and shop with intention.
When it comes to organization, having a system in place is key. Utilize the entire space for your items. For example, buy closed bins for out of season or travel items and place them on the top shelf. Utilize the back of the door or any blank walls with hooks for hats or a jewelry organizer. Get rid of items that are taking up space in your closet like shoe boxes, sentimental items, and bulky items like luggage. Store them elsewhere if you can. The two best things you can do to save on space and have an organized closet is to invest in all matching slim velvet hangers. This frees up more space in your closet and looks great, too. And finally, add matching labeled baskets for folded items to keep everything nicely organized and in specific categories.
The moms and the mother figures in our lives mean everything to us. They deserve the best every day, of course. But at least one day out of the year, we get to shower them with the same love and thoughtfulness they give to us so selflessly.
This year, we hope you’ll consider some memorable ways to make lasting memories with the mom or mother figure in your life. If you haven’t already planned something special, take a look at our list of ideas and circle your favorites. If you have kids, let them join in the fun too!
Whether you decide to spend a day at home or enjoy a day on the town, these innovative celebration ideas will include fun for the whole family and make Mom feel loved. Whatever activity or surprise you land on to show your mom, wife, sister or maternal figure your appreciation for all they do, the most important thing is that you all get to spend some quality time together.
Mother’s Day arrives just as spring is in full bloom. Take advantage of the season by going to a flower arranging class with mom.
Before Mother’s Day, go through everybody’s camera rolls and Instagram feeds and choose her favorite photos. Get them printed ahead of time so you can make a memory book. You might just love it so much you make it a yearly tradition.
Mom will truly appreciate you going out of your way to set her up with a massage or facial appointment. Invite her friends along, too!
Songs about mothers and mom’s favorite songs can come together into the perfect playlist to put on during brunch or dinner. You can either make it for her or take turns being DJ and alternate picks.
DIY pizza: It’s a craft (depending on how artfully you place the toppings), an activity and a meal all at once! Start with basic pizza dough, then everyone gets to add their favorite toppings. Mom gets the first pick, of course.
Croquet, cornhole, bocce, outdoor Jenga or horseshoes — what’s your family’s game of choice? Split into teams and drum up some friendly rivalry — while soaking in rays — with a backyard challenge. Make it an annual event, and pass around a trophy to the winner each year.
For the mom who’s always seeking adventure, a trip to your nearest amusement park will be a welcome surprise. Not only will you be able to treat her to her fill of funnel cakes and caramel corn, but she’ll enjoy all the rides and attractions her heart desires. If you ask us, it’s a win-win.
Sure, backyard barbecues are often associated with Father’s Day, but Mom loves her burgers and dogs, too, so why should Dad get all the fun? If the weather cooperates, fire up the grill!
If you do a DIY craft project, write a poem or come up with a silly dance, you know mom will love it because it is 100% you. No one can one-up a one-of-a-kind experience! You can make them for her and present them to her, or involve her in their creation.
Gardeners know that Mother’s Day is the perfect time to start planting seeds. Get the whole family outside and dig in the dirt together. Every time she sees them, she’ll be reminded of the special day — it’s the gift that keeps on giving! Some flowers that are fairly easy to maintain include sunflowers, marigolds and sweet peas.
Not only will you leave with a one-of-a-kind piece, but you’ll also be able to bond as you explore a new activity.
There’s nothing like waking up with the sun and going to the farmer’s market on the weekend. Pick fresh produce and discover new favorites with mom, coffee in hand.
Whether this involves digitizing old VHS tapes or getting video files off your phone and onto the TV, dig into the family archives and host a home-movie marathon. She’ll get emotional seeing how much everyone has grown.
Dad knows - Mom has a to-do list a mile long. Whether it’s tasks around the house or a DIY project, find out what has been nagging Mom and help her cross it off her list by doing it for her!
