THE ACE UP OUR SLEEVE DOESN’T GAMBLE.
Our sales coordinator isn’t the risk-taking type. You’ll never catch her walking under a ladder, and she’s prone to keeping sage in every room of her house to ward off any unseen impurities. But her sensitivity to risk makes her the perfect person to understand and advise today’s home buyer. So while we’ll never run into her at the blackjack table, we’re glad she took a gamble on us.

"I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar"
“A strong woman knows she has strength enough for the journey, but a woman of strength knows it is in the journey where she will become strong.”
Welcome to our ladies issue! It’s one of my favorite issues to put together because I love being able to celebrate the success of women. The accomplished ladies on the following pages are just a handful of the many talented and amazing women we are lucky to call our neighbors.
Starting with the one who graces our cover, the incomparable Miranda Lambert. As if her music wasn’t enough to showcase her incredible talents, she’s now releasing a cookbook later this month that is like an ode to her nostalgic upbringing.
In this issue, we talked about a few women that are motivating and inspiring us. I’m so proud to be a part of a magazine that spotlights all the great things local women are doing.
Happy reading!
Warmly,

The Best Or Nothing
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSH VAUGHNIf you spend enough time around car dealerships, like I do, you start to get a sense of the normal career path that people take in the world of car sales. There’s no set standard, of course, but across the board the hours are long, the work is tough and climbing the “corporate ladder” takes time. A lot of time. For Maryam Malikyar, the new General Manager at Mercedes-Benz of Nashville, her story is a bit different. Maryam is new to Nashville, fresh from running a top-performing import store in Fairfax, Virginia and she’s one of those rare people you just can’t help but like immediately. Enthusiastic, eager to laugh and genuinely interested in what you have to say.
Maryam’s meteoric ascent through the ranks of the car business started with a chance encounter. A woman who worked in management at a Chrysler Jeep and Dodge store met Maryam, spotted her potential,

and asked her if she’d ever thought about a career in the car business. The woman who would eventually become her mentor was persistent and reached out repeatedly over a few months to see if there was any interest. Maryam was young and at a bit of a crossroads in life and knowing nothing about cars, had never considered the automotive industry. She eventually took a leap, and like everyone else, she began in sales but after only six months transitioned into the finance office, filling in for those on their day off or on vacation. She jumped between a handful of dealerships within a dealer group, gaining insight and experience across the board with a variety of car brands.
I think we should take a moment to pause and reflect on the transition from sales to the finance office in only six months. Selling cars is hard - really hard, especially at the entry level. The turnover rate is extraordinary,

usually between 30 to 40 percent and sometimes higher. If you’re a superstar, they’ll start grooming you for finance after you’ve spent a year proving you can not only swim with the sharks and survive, but thrive. Some dealerships will wait even longer than a year, so if you’re good enough to transition in only six months, you’re already in the top one percent.
After cutting her teeth in finance for a year and a half, Maryam decided to treat herself to a brand new import sports car. While going through the buying process, they found out she worked in the car business, spotted her potential and professionalism and offered her a job. When you and I go to buy a car, we leave with some paperwork and a monthly payment. Maryam left that day with a new car and a promotion.
After 13 years of successful leadership, Maryam is now the General Manager at Mercedes-Benz of Nashville and ready to bring her enthusiasm and experience to Music City. I asked her what makes MBofNashville stand out from the competition. “The only thing that’s going to set you apart from the competition is the customer experience. The single most important 'make or break’ is what people think about you - reputation and guest experience is everything.”

She’s a firm believer in playing the long game, investing in customer relationships and taking care of each and every person who walks in the door. It is immediately apparent that her
ethos has already been passed down to everyone else at the dealership. When I first walked in the door at MBofNashville everyone was very friendly and quick to help point me in the right direction.
I asked Maryam what, in her mind, sets Mercedes-Benz apart from the rest of the automotive industry and she said, “The Mercedes tagline is ‘the best or nothing’ and they really take it seriously. Mercedes is classic and traditional all at the same time.” She went on to point out that Mercedes has arguably the largest target audience of any other car brand. Everything from Super Sports cars to luxury limousines, from delivery vans to off-road G Wagons and entry level ‘first cars’ to futuristic next generation electric cars.
I concluded my conversation with Maryam by asking her what advice she would have if she met a young woman who was at a crossroads in life, knew nothing about cars but had obvious potential.
“Are you good at your job? Do you care about your customers? Are you a hard worker? Are you good for culture? Are you a good fit for the team? Are you intimidated? If so, don’t be.”
She went on to say that aside from her mentor she didn’t have many women to look up to in upper management when she first started her career, “These [management] jobs are achievable. Seeing is believing. You just have to go get it.”

WHEEL'S UP!
MIDDLE TENNESSEE’S NEXT GENERATION OF PILOTS ARE EARNING THEIR WINGS AT TENNESSEE FLIGHT TRAINING

As a music producer, Chris Erlanson’s job was to listen to artists talk about their dreams and vision, then help them achieve them. That’s not too far removed from his role as the owner of Tennessee Flight Training (TFT).
“When people walk through the door, they have a dream. They want to do something bigger than themselves and that’s what aviation is,” says Erlanson. “God did not intend for us to fly. But in an airplane, if you want to climb, you will climb. If you want to come back to earth, you will come back to earth. Airplanes are really just extensions of our dreams."
Erlanson never aspired to be an aviation professional while he was working for a record label and a management company. Flying was just something to do, an escape while he was away from the music business. He didn’t realize what it would turn into until he acquired what was then Nashville
Flight Training in 2014. “I bought the flight school as a side investment. It was never intended to be my main vocation,” says Erlanson. “But the more I became involved in aviation, the more I enjoyed it. It gives me great joy, watching kids come in not knowing what a propeller is and a few years later they’re working for an airline. It’s as if I live vicariously through them, seeing them go from knowing nothing to becoming aviation experts.”
Today, Tennessee Flight Training has operations at Nashville International Airport (BNA) and Maury County Regional Airport (MRC). Between the two fields, it serves hundreds of students ranging from aspiring aviators to experienced pilots who are training for advanced certifications. But even the absolute beginner goes airborne at the first lesson. “We try to make sure that every first lesson is actually in the airplane,” says Erlanson.
“The reason is that you weren’t drawn to aviation because you wanted to learn math or formulae. You’re going to learn about legal and regulatory and math and physics. But we want to keep it fun, too, so every opportunity you have to be in
the plane, you’ll be in it with your hands on the controls.”
Students also flock to TFT because aviation jobs pay well and there is a nationwide pilot shortage numbering in the tens of thousands. This explains why students

come from all walks of life, including a growing number of aspiring female aviators. Erlanson has assembled a staff of 40 that includes 26 certified flight instructors, mechanics, regulatory experts and administrative personnel. With 13 aircraft of various performance levels and an FAA-certified simulator at each airport, students have access to all the equipment they need whether they’re pursuing a pilot license or seeking to become an Airport Transport Pilot, a designation required to fly for a commercial airline.
Erlanson says that TFT has a number of advantages compared to flight schools that are housed in university settings. “One of our strengths is that we provide a lot of flexibility,” he says. “Some students want to train twice a day, six days a week. Others want to train only once or twice a week. We’re able to accommodate all of them. It’s not so much the lessons as it is the proficiency. The FAA has strict guidelines in terms of minimum proficiencies and technical skills.”
That aligns with something else that’s inherent to flight training that Erlanson says cannot be compromised. “Aviation is a meritocracy,” he says. “If you come to me with a million dollars, I can’t sell you a license. A license cannot be purchased online with a couple of clicks. It has to be earned.” And in Middle Tennessee, aspiring pilots are earning their wings at Tennessee Flight Training. Miranda Lambert
Gives Us A Peek Into Her Childhood
WITH A BRAND NEW COOKBOOK
As if being one of the most decorated artists in country music (38 ACM Awards, including a record-setting nine consecutive Female Artist of the Year Awards, 14 CMA Awards and three GRAMMY Awards), having her own clothing and boot line, Idyllwind, launching a foundation to promote the adoption of rescue pets and starting her own home goods collection, Wanda June, isn't enough, Miranda Lambert can

her accomplishments. Being released later this month, Y'All Eat Yet? Welcome to the Pretty B*tchin' Kitchen is Lambert's debut into the world of books.
Y'All Eat Yet? is a collection of recipes that mix childhood memories with traditions and lots of love around the family table. Lambert says she owes it all to the two generations of women who raised her, her Nonny Wanda Louise and her momma Beverly June. Those influential ladies are not only the inspiration behind this cookbook but also for her Wanda June home goods collection available exclusively at Walmart that launched just last summer. We got to talk with Miranda about her new book, her home accessories line and some of her favorite childhood memories.
AT WHAT POINT IN YOUR LIFE DID YOU REALIZE YOU HAD A SPECIAL CHILDHOOD AND WANTED TO WRITE ABOUT IT TO SHARE WITH OTHERS?
ML: I think I realized it early on, actually. I wrote my first song at 14 and it was about growing up in our small town of Lindale, Texas. My childhood has shown up in my music through the years – and now a lot of those memories are in the book!

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO PUT THIS BOOK TOGETHER FROM CONCEPTION? (IE ROUNDING UP THE RECIPES, OLD FAMILY PHOTOS, ETC)
ML: It’s been almost three years of work to get all the stories and recipes down on paper and make it all make sense. I am excited for my fans to see and read it.
YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT FEMALE BONDING IN THE BOOK. WHAT'S ONE WAY YOU LIKE TO GET TOGETHER WITH YOUR GIRLFRIENDS?
ML: We revolve almost every gathering around cocktails and snacks. Our best memories are about just being together, no matter what we are doing or where we are. We always bring the fun.
I LOVE YOUR TRIBE. YOUR INTROS TO THEM SOUND LIKE YOU'VE GOT SOME WONDERFUL PEOPLE AROUND YOU. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A DISCONNECTED WOMAN TODAY WHO IS STILL LOOKING TO FIND HER TRIBE?
ML: Find people that lift you up, but also tell you the truth. A group of friends that loves you through ups and downs is so special, and I’m very thankful to have them.
I'M SURE IT'S HARD TO CHOOSE, BUT DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE NONNY RECIPE OTHER THAN HER FAMOUS COOKIES? ONE THAT TRULY TAKES YOU BACK TO YOUR CHILDHOOD?
ML: Her dressing is a family staple for us. Since she passed, we have been trying to get it right, but we never can do it quite like her. She used her magic touch.
YOU SAY YOU LIKE EATING MORE THAN COOKING, BUT TELL US, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU'VE MASTERED IN THE KITCHEN THAT YOU TRULY ENJOY PUTTING TOGETHER?
ML: I make taco soup a lot. It’s quick and easy and goes a long way for gatherings or parties. I also love making peanut butter cookies. Super easy and delish.
THE WANDA JUNE KITCHENWARE IS KINDA RETRO 70'S. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND IT?
ML: A lot of my grandmother’s and mom’s old dishes that have been passed down have a retro feel, so we wanted to bring that out in Wanda June. I feel like retro never goes out of style – and it’s super fun.
YOU'RE SO BUSY (MUSIC, TOURING, WRITING, PINK PISTOL, WINERY, MUTTNATION) - WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?
ML: I have a farm about an hour from Nashville which is usually the place I go to recharge. All of my animals and airstreams are there, and I really just feel so balanced and peaceful after a few days in the country. Our friends come hang out there as well, so it’s just a cool, chill vibe.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU? GOT ANYTHING UP YOUR SLEEVE?
ML: I always have something up my sleeve! I’ve been writing music a ton, so that’s been fun, and I am about to kick off another leg of the Velvet Rodeo residency in Vegas. I’ve been loving that, so I’m pumped!

"I love what happens when you put people together with good food, drinks and a fire, on a porch or next to an Airstream. It's not about the fancy - it's about the fellowship."

The Story Behind The Name
The Fainting Goat Coffee Co

“We’d been working in music forever, since we moved to Tennessee, which is now 29 years ago,” Susana Allen said of herself and her husband Alex who owns The Fainting Goat Coffee Co. in Spring Hill. “With all the changes in music, and what we went through with the digitalization of music, we knew that we needed to find something else.” So after owning a couple of businesses in the past, they realized that the one thing the community of Spring Hill where they reside was missing {at the time} was a coffee shop.
Every time they drove by the white house that now is home to The Fainting Goat Coffee Co., Alex would comment on how it was such a great location and a business needed to move in there. So when it became available for rent, the Allens did just that and opened their doors in October 2017. “That place just called us,” says Susana. “It was just one of those steps that you take that is very, very scary but we just felt compelled to go for it.”
When it came to choosing a name for their coffee shop, they wanted something representative of the area and since fainting goats are native to Tennessee, they thought it would be a fun moniker.
“The other reason is in the eighth century there was a goat herder named Kaldi and he had goats,” explains Susana. “The goats would go eat these red berries that they found and then they would become jumpy. Kaldi decided to test the berries and he himself also felt a lot more energetic. Kaldi took the berries back to the monastery where he lived and the monks thought they were evil,
so they threw them in the fire. But it started smelling so good that they decided to steep them and then brew them and it turned out that it was coffee. So it’s said that goats discovered coffee.”
At The Fainting Goat Coffee Co., the Allens want to not only bring people together but also teach everyone from newbies to coffee aficionados about the art of coffee. “Our biggest thing is community and to make specialty coffee less intimidating,” says Susana.
What sets The Fainting Goat apart from other coffee shops is its creative and whimsical specialty drinks. From paying homage to the classic “Back to the Future” trilogy with the Doc Brown drink to a customer favorite blend of cayenne and Mexican chocolate dubbed the “Nacho Libre,” and even a nod to Taylor Swift’s recent song “Lavender Haze” with a blueberry Cuban drink called the Swift, their menu is full of imaginative beverages.
“When you call yourself The Fainting Goat Coffee Co., you’re not going to take yourself super seriously, which are our personalities in our family anyway,” explains Susana. “We’re just easy-going and fun and we love pop culture. We love things that we grew up with that are nostalgic.”
They’re now known for their Star Warsinspired “May the Fourth” drinks that are featured items on their menu during the month of May. What started with a Baby Yodathemed drink lovingly named Baby Goda has grown into inventing a new Star Wars character-themed drink that gets “goatified” every year including the pecan caramel flavored
“Our biggest thing is community and to make specialty coffee less intimidating.” - Susanna Allen
Wookie and an iced cherry blossom drink called The Child. The coffee shop also offers their made-from-scratch empanadas—with both sweet and savory varieties—all-day breakfast burritos and many baked goods made in-house. When asked about her favorite part of the job, Susana can answer without hesitation.
“The people. I love people,” she exclaims. “I love our employees, and I love being part of a community. I love walking around and talking to people. I’ve made great friendships with our customers. We’ve been out here for five years and I just love the connections that we’ve been able to make in town.”

Susanna and Alex Allen are former music industry personnel. Susanna was a singer-songwriter and Alex worked as a producer and recording engineer. They left the industry to open The Fainting Goat and are continually eager to serve the Spring Hill community.

A Shop that Feeds The Soul
Caring For Others Never Goes Out Of Style
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI
For Margaret Ziegler of Spring Hill, Vintage 615 Boutique Clothing and Decor is not just a place to sell merchandise, but to dispense hugs, elicit laughter, and provide love. “I want everybody to always feel like they’re seen, cared for and valued,” she says. “My store is a platform to do that.”
Margaret took over the shop about seven years ago from a good friend. “She told me this was her baby and she wanted to keep it thriving and she knew I would do that and take it to another level. To have another woman, another friend, believe in me meant so much and was empowering.”
Today the store has moved away from the vintage into the new. “We’ve gone in the direction of a gift shop and boutique, which covers everything from purses and jewelry to fashion,” she says.

Margaret carefully chooses merchandise that women will want to give to their girlfriends, their mothers and aunts for any and all occasions.
Her husband, Chris, is the co-owner and also owns Living 615, a furniture store in Spring Hill. “He’s got one of the best hearts of anyone I’ve ever met and he loves unconditionally,” says Margaret. “Whatever I’m trying to do, he’s there to help me.”

She praises the teams they both have in their respective stores. “It’s nice to have people you can trust and rely on,” she says. “The women in my store have kind characters, which is one of the most important things to me. You can teach people what to do, but you can’t teach kindness.”
To add to the happy atmosphere, her
little rescue dog Shelby is often there to meet and greet customers.
In addition to being a wife and mother, owning Vintage 615 and caring for her 97-year-old father, Margaret is also very involved in her community, including being a member of the Chamber of Commerce. “I just feel like that’s part of life and it allows me so many cool opportunities to meet people.”
Through the store, she offers many free events such as pictures with the Easter Bunny, live goats, and Spider-Man and pictures with Santa during the holidays.
“I knew God wanted me to do something in a way that would glorify him - to be a light, to be positive, to be loving - and that’s the thing that I’ve tried to cultivate with Vintage 615,” says Margaret. Vintage615.com

GARDEN TO GLASS
DIY COCKTAILS WITH FRESH HERBS
Nothing says spring like the aroma of fresh cut herbs in a crisp, cold, cocktail. With warmer weather finally here, growing herbs at home can transform your cocktail hour and add a fresh kick to your springtime favorites.

Growing herbs is incredibly easy and can be done in a variety of ways- from a container in a window, to a planter box in the yard. With a container or garden full of fresh herbs, you will be ready to take your cocktails up a notch.
Basil is a bright herb that is easy to grow and perfect for cocktails. Make sure and harvest immediately before mixing drinks and take leaves from the top to ensure a continual harvest. Fresh muddled basil leaves lend a crispness to the Gin Basil Cucumber cocktail.
Sage is easy to grow and does well in containers. The leaves add an earthy freshness to a refreshing cherry infused Bourbon.
Mint is also easy to grow, but give it lots of room, as it likes to spread out and is virtually indestructible in the garden. Mint is a versatile herb but is especially lovely in the Rhubarb Mint Mojito.
Try recreating these refreshing cocktails with herbs grown at home and take your cocktail game to new heights!

Make an Impact for Mom
Memorable ways to celebrate the mother figure in your life
The moms and the mother figures in our lives mean everything to us. They deserve the best every day, of course. But at least one day out of the year, we get to shower them with the same love and thoughtfulness they give to us so selflessly.
This year, we hope you’ll consider some memorable ways to make lasting memories with the mom or mother figure in your life. If you haven’t already planned something special, take a look at our list of ideas and circle your favorites. If you have kids, let them join in the fun too!
Whether you decide to spend a day at home or enjoy a day on the town, these innovative celebration ideas will include fun for the whole family and make Mom feel loved. Whatever activity or surprise you land on to show your mom, wife, sister or maternal figure your appreciation for all they do, the most important thing is that you all get to spend some quality time together.
Take a Flower Arranging Class
Mother’s Day arrives just as spring is in full bloom. Take advantage of the season by going to a flower arranging class with mom.

Play a Family Board Game
If Mom likes strategizing, challenge her to a friendly board game competition. (And, no, you don’t have to let her win just because it’s Mother’s Day.)
Pick Your Own Fruit
This activity is especially fun if you have a lot of kids who want to get in on the action. Then, when you all get home, you can whip up a treat for Mom with your selections. (Maybe give her a strawberry in a Champagne glass while she waits.)
Book Her a Weekend Away
There’s no day like Mother’s Day to be impulsive! Book a weekend trip for the two of you at a cute B&B in a city Mom has always wanted to visit.
Complete a Jigsaw Puzzle
Find a puzzle with an image you know your mom will love (or make a custom one using a photo of the two of you) and put it together over wine and snacks. You’ll be amazed at how much chatting you can get done while puzzling.
Get Theater Tickets
Go to a play or a musical — lots of towns even host outdoor theater events.
Invite Her To High Tea

Whether you make the brews and treats yourself or head out to an official tea house, Mom will love sipping her beverage out of fancy china and snacking on tea sandwiches.
