Sunny, sizzling summer fun

Welcome to summer in Texas. It's too hot. The End.

Dear Readers,

I hope you are staying cool and reading this July "Explore" issue either on a pool float or under a huge breezy fan. I also hope you get the chance to enjoy family-time with the college kids home or little grandkiddos around and have at least a couple of lazy summer days or fun vacation plans.

My goal for this issue was to "explore everything summer" - vacations, travel, hotels, swimming holes and unique places to enjoy outside, patios, wining and dining - fun for all while also staying cool!

In this issue, we feature Hidden Family Hangouts of The Woodlands - several local family venues that you may or may not be familiar with. We went off the beaten path and discovered a few hidden gems to eat and drink and play.

Splash into Summer in our story on swimming holes located all over the state. Speaking of swimming, the beach is calling and we visited The Hotel Lucine in Galveston, a renovated gem of a boutique hotel with a vintage vibe.

Most of our readers vacation on the Gulf coast, Orange Beach, Destin and the beautiful 30-A. However, I discovered Florida's Atlantic coast offers more of an Old World Florida feel. I hope you enjoy my story on The beautiful Delray Sands Resort on the "other Florida coast."

We have a local hometown hero, baseball great Mason Marriot, Baylor University's pitcher originally from Tomball heading for the MLB Combine!

Jewelry designer Via Vandi lets us into her world at her boutique, a barrage of color, style and one-off eclectic pieces! Enjoy the colorful photos.

I'd love to hear about your summer adventures so be sure to tag #thewoodlands citylifestyle in your vacation photos!

Sizzle on...

Baylor’s Pitcher Selected for MLB Combine

TOMBALL’S

OWN MASON MARRIOTT IS THROWING STRIKES AND THROWING SHADE

Crushing it vibes.

One local baseball player we are following is playing out his field of dreams story pitching for Baylor University’s baseball team. Mason Marriott, a junior, is already setting records on the mound and holds career honors for making the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in Fall 2021, and Spring 2022.

“Mason has been a conference starting pitcher for us for the last two years. He is an ultra-talented young man that can run the fastball up there at 95 mph,” shares Baylor baseball’s head coach Mitch Thompson. “It has been fun to watch Mason grow both on and off the field. He is a selfstarter who demands a lot out of himself.”

Mason shared that he fell in love with the game of baseball when he was very young. “Baseball has always been a part of my family because my dad played professionally,” Mason shares. “When I was young my dad coached a travel ball team, and I would always be there in the dugout.”

Mike and Misty Marriott are proud parents and Mason’s mom shared that it is a dream watching Mason develop along the way and loves how humble he has been. Her momma’s heart smiles inside watching him at games and getting pictures and signing autographs for his young fans and long-time fans alike.

One challenge that Mason faces at Baylor is time management. Balancing a full day of classes with baseball has led him to leverage technology by using a calendar app to prioritize the week. “This allows me to get what I need to get done and be able to know what time practice is and when I need to be at the field,” Mason says.

Mason took responsibility while at college and recalls the pressure he felt making the transformation from high school to college and living on his own which made him work harder.

“Sometimes, because he wants to be excellent at everything he does, he can be too hard on himself.  He has grown as a pitcher and as a student during his time here at Baylor,” Coach Thompson says. “He takes his education seriously and earning a Baylor degree is a big deal to him. It will be fun to watch Mason earn that degree next year as he and others lead our program on the field.”

“The pressure is a big thing in college because you have so many young talented guys that all can play every single game, but you have to show coaches that you can perform at your best,” Mason shares. “You can learn from the older guys that are already there and that can be very beneficial for a young player. I learned a lot from upper class players.”

Support and encouragement are critical in maintaining the balance and rigors required from playing college ball. Mason emphatically shared that what helps him stay focused on the field is his family and girlfriend. “They all keep me on track and make me stay focused and push me to be my best,” Mason says. “They are always there to support me at every game and are the first people to tell me good job. My mom and dad are always there for me and gave me this opportunity in life to play the game I love so very much.”

“It has been fun to watch Mason grow both on and off the field. He is a self-starter who demands a lot out of himself.” — Head Coach Mitch Thompson
Mason ruling the mound.
“Wherever that takes me will be a dream come true, baseball has been the biggest impact on my life, and I am so excited to see what is in store for me.”
— Mason Marriott

Of course, Mason hopes to continue his baseball career, like every college player.  The summer is already shaping up as Mason was selected to attend the MLB Draft Combine from June 17 to June 22, at Chase Field in Phoenix where he has the chance to show off his skills where the MLB teams from all 30 clubs are closely watching the players for potential offers. “Wherever that takes me will be a dream come true,” Mason shares. “Baseball has been the biggest impact on my life, and I am so excited to see what is in store for me.”

DELRAY SANDS RESORT, A SECRET GEM ON FLORIDA’S ATLANTIC COAST

Old World Florida Vibes

ARTICLE BY JO HAMMON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JO HAMMON, PROVIDED

There are three major airports located within 45 minutes, making it very easy to get here.

Most of our readers have vacationed on the Florida Gulf Coast. The 30 mile stretch of glorious beaches from Destin to Panama City is known as 30-A and turquoise waters, sugary white sands and serene sunsets are inviting year-round.

However, after visiting my son, in college in Boca Raton, I discovered the “Old World Florida’’ vibe of the state’s Atlantic Coast and a little secret gem called Highland/Delray Beach, slightly north of Ft. Lauderdale, Pompano and Boca Raton. The natural beauty is illustrated with a tropical feel as Iguanas roam in the lush green landscape in the dunes of the beach! I was able to talk with General Manager, Derric Clark of the Delray Sands Resort, a small boutique hotel on the infamous Highway A1A (S. Oceanfront Blvd) about the tropical and vintage feel of the hotel and area.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE HOTEL? IT HAS A VINTAGE VIBE SO I’M WONDERING HOW OLD IT IS.

This property has been here since the late 60’s. It was one of the first pieces of property developed in Highland Beach and was originally a Holiday Inn up until 10 years ago. The property has undergone several updates and renovations but still maintains the vibe of a vintage Florida resort.

WHAT IS THE DRAW THAT KEEPS PEOPLE RETURNING TO THE HOTEL AND THE AREA?

I’d like to think that there are several draws to the property but the most obvious would be our private beach. We are the only beachfront resort in Delray/Highland Beach. Each of our guests get two chairs and an umbrella set up daily on our beach with food and beverage service, making this property an ideal beach getaway. I believe another major draw to Delray Sands is our staff. A great deal of our team has been with us for 15+ years and many of our guests have created quite the rapport with them over the years. This paired with our boutique size allows

for a uniquely personal and welcoming experience just 2.5 miles from downtown Delay Beach.

LATITUDES RESTAURANT HAS AMAZING FOOD - WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GUEST’S FAVORITE DISHES?

Breakfast on the ocean is definitely a favorite for guests and locals alike. As for their favorites, the Raw Bar is always a hit. The Shellfish Tower, Mini Ahi Tuna Tacos and Jalapeno Hamachi are some our most popular. As for our dinner selections, the Maine Lobster & Filet, the Crab Crusted Chilean Sea Bass and the Rustic Seafood Stew are some of the favorites.

THE AREA IS QUAINT AND ARTSY IN PARTS. WHAT ARE SOME LOCAL FAVORITES?

Atlantic Avenue in Downtown Delray is a very popular area. With tons of shops and restaurants lining the way it is very fun place to explore. They often shut down the Ave for events such as the Delray Affair, Savor the Ave, The Delray Art Festival and several others which are quite fun. If you’re looking for something more outdoors, I would recommend Gumbo Limbo Nature Center with turtle rehab center, as well as the Morikami Japanese Gardens and the Wakodahatchee Wetlands. All very cool and unique to the area.

WHAT DO YOU THINK WOULD APPEAL TO OUR READERS ABOUT THAT AREA?

As a lifelong Florida native, I can assure you this is one of the best areas in all of the state. There are three major airports located within 45 minutes to an hour, making it very easy to get here. The Atlantic Ocean is amazing for fishing, water sports or simply just playing or relaxing on the beach. We are within 45 min of all of the major stadiums and arenas (local teams in every major professional sport), great local nightlife, plenty of shopping, some of the best food in the world and fun locals.

I HAVE HEARD THE TERM “OLD WORLD FLORIDA” AND I FEEL LIKE DELRAY BEACH EXHIBITS MORE OF THAT THAN SAY, BOCA RATON, FT. LAUDERDALE, ETC.

While Delray isn’t as Old-World Florida as say St. Augustine, it is much more of an authentic Florida experience than the other areas mentioned. It is a very good mix of touristy and local spots.

ANY SECRET GEMS IN THE AREA IN TERMS OF GREAT FOOD/DRINK PLACES?

There are more than a few! We always recommend Drift and the Elevate Skye Bar and Lounge if you’re looking some great spots to grab dinner and drink with a view. Other spots I recommend in Downtown Delray would be Rose’s Daughter, Brulee, Akira Back and Papa’s Tapas.

So there you have it - another Florida coast to explore! Discover the magic of the Atlantic Ocean,

The property has undergone several updates and renovations but still maintains the vibe of a vintage Florida resort.

FREE SPIRITED WANDERLUST INSPIRES ECLECTIC ROUND TOP BOUTIQUE

ARTICLE BY ANNETTE PALMER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Designer Vandi Hodges wearing a vintage kimono and her own jewelry designs
A bold contemporary elegance

There’s a sign in Vandi Hodges Round Top boutique which says, “I have the sudden urge to breathe foreign air”, after talking to her, I realize it’s a mantra for her inspiration, motivation and creativity. The Via Vandi boutique on quaint Rummel Square is a barrage of color, style and one-off eclectic pieces, collaborations with artists and designers worldwide mean that there is always something unique to discover. Vandi’s own lines of jewelry are accompanied by a terrific collection of vintage kimonos, as well as an array of textiles Vandi has gathered on her extensive travels.

An avid traveler from a young age Vandi is always ready for the next adventure. “I believe that travel opens your mind and your heart and connects you to the souls of the world,” she states. This native Texan, who embarked on a backpacking trip to see the world, found herself in Denmark, the hub of European design, it was the catalyst for her initial jewelry inspirations. She traveled to London and studied under master jeweler Daniel Krumhorn for 5 years, later moving on to Ibiza, Spain. Marrying together Danish design with a London city edge meets the Ibiza club scene resulted in her signature look.  “I love stones, I don’t like to overcomplicate, and I design around the stone, I really love the Nudist line because it just lets the stone be the art, and I don’t

“I like things that have a story behind them, I like things with meaning.”

want to compete with it,” Vandi points out when she talks about her love of precious and semi-precious stones. The Nudist line features bold carnelians and labradorites as well as the translucencies of clear quartz and blue topaz. Her designs offer a contemporary panache which can easily be worn from day to night.  A client recently described Vandi’s pieces as “the little black dress of jewelry”. Vandi returned to Texas and prior to launching Via Vandi catered to private clients and commissions, as well as having representation in the Kuhl Linscomb store on W. Alabama, St, Houston, something which she still has today, this is the only place to purchase Vandi’s jewelry other than the Via Vandi boutique.

Working with fine silver, Vandi removes the alloy which renders a satin finish, resulting in a look that is whiter than sterling, she also works with 24K gold in the vermeil system.  Her personal favorites include a black tourmaline crown pendant, based on the British Monarchy. She has a favorite choker with a hand wrapped crystal that she wears every day. Vandi’s Dad used to call to her “Hey Sugar”, and she named a line after him, combining fine beadwork with metalwork, this range is very adaptable and can be worn in many different styles.

When I asked what was next for the boutique, Vandi told me about a return to her passion of collecting antique textiles. “Each piece has its own story, I like things that have a story behind them, I like things with meaning, each kimono was someone’s, they’re so soulful, some are over 100 years old.” There’s a huge selection, each one extraordinary, the collection spans from the 1920’s to 1970’s, these airy silks are perfect for the Texas climate. Other recent collections and collaborations include working with indigenous women. Embroidered hats from Mexico, handmade tapestries from an Amazon tribe - the Ayahuasca Tapestries are made by the Shipibo tribe, whom Vandi had the experience of working with after she lived with the Aguaruna tribe in the 90’s! Lots of Guatemalan antique tapestries and a collaboration of Parisian scarves and throws, “the collection is so French and colorful and elegant.” Vandi states, “I’m a collector of antiques and a collaborator for the new modern pieces.”

Visit Via Vandi at 109 Bauer Rummel Rd in Round Top, all year from 11-7 on Saturdays, 10-3 on Sundays, and for champagne shopping during the Round Top Antique Fairs during Winter, Spring and Fall. viavandi.com

LAID BACK AT THE LUCINE

Retro reimagined by mid-century maestros in Galveston’s boutique hotel

Maybe only the true heart of a musician hears the lure of a beach utopia.  Beleaguered oilmen from Midland and sun worshipers from San Antonio will find much to love in the new Hotel Lucine.  Bass player Dave Jacoby and his wife, Keath,

who was born on the island have much to be proud of.  Along with partner Robert Marcus, a New York real estate developer who has relocated with his wife, Ashlye, (a childhood friend of Keath’s) emphasize the high on expectations, low on pretense aspects of their vision for Hotel Lucine, the island’s latest entry into Galveston’s hotel scene.  They’ve redesigned a circa 1963 midcentury modern hotel that opened first as Treasure Isle at 1002 Seawall.

After shepherding a $165M hotel in Las Vegas through development and debut in 2016, the Jacobys returned to Galveston where Keath was born.  The Jacobys partnered up with Marcus in 2021 as he bid NYC adieu in favor of the coastal breezes and less hectic lifestyle.  The team bought The Pearl Inn with a goal of modernizing the hotel’s 61 rooms and instilling a welcoming, hip vibe to the midcentury modern jewel. Shawn Ullman and Jeff Soloman are the two

partners who came in from Austin for a recent leadership meeting. Solomon, who grew up in Memorial, brought his family who enjoyed breakfast in The Den before a walk on the beach.

The careful renovation at Hotel Lucine resonates with thoughtful respect for the storied past of Galveston, a city that has embraced renovation out of necessity since the Great Fire of Galveston that decimated 40 city blocks and 500 buildings in 1885 followed by the Great Storm of 1900 when a 15-foot storm surge flooded the city. After the storm, the city built the Seawall and raised the elevation of the new structures to come and rebuilding commenced with vigor.

The entire concept is female centric, with executive chef Leila Ortiz leading the culinary curation and general manager Lacye Frazier overseeing operations.  So far, the hotel has attracted an upscale crowd of writers, musicians, UTMB students and

out-of-towners who enjoy a more elevated dinner at The Fancy, the hotel's restaurant offering "fineish dining." Not to be missed are the scrumptious cups of Corduroy Coffee at sunrise or drinks sunset at the rooftop bar where the Sunset & Sounds summer series brings in bands from Austin, Houston like the soulful Kam Franklin of The Suffers fame, Galveston’s Robert Kuhn and the Texas Gentlemen, a quintet known for their blend of funk, soul, country, R&B, and Southern rock and unforgettable ballads. The Saturday night band performances are planned through Labor Day.

The move has also given Dave Jacoby a chance to work on his music in a thoughtful way. An excellent bass player, he collaborated with Robert Kuhn who released a new album during the pandemic, Some Kind of Love. Dave and Keath also own the property across the street from Hotel Lucine where they plan a beach club.

Millennials gather around the retro pool, centered between the horseshoe anchored by patio dining. Pool passes are available to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and can be reserved by phone or email. The spacious rooms are appointed with alarm clocks those that look like that sat on Darrin and Samantha Stevens’ bedside table in Bewitched. Original pink, blue or teals found on 60s-era postcards of the hotel color the tiles of the bathrooms and there are doors from the Galveston Historical Foundation’s warehouse off the lobby. “We wanted a strong, feminine persona,’ said Rob Baird, of the Austin design firm Preacher, which created the hotel’s typeface, pastel color palette and name. Keath has a saying that ‘Galveston is a peculiar woman.’ And the city does have this blend of Southern and Texas culture.” Another Austin

firm, Kartwheel Studio, stripped away the uninspired, Home Depotesque renovations at the Pearl Inn, restoring the feel of a midcentury motor lodge with its classic zig-zag roof.

"In developing Hotel Lucine, we very consciously selected creative partners, investors, and vendors that are not only good at what they do, but who we also get along well personally," says Jacoby. "In the case of David Clark and

Kartwheel Studio, there was no question that his vision best aligned with ours. He took our initial plans and translated them into a reality that far exceeded our expectations."

Kartwheel also did The Cathedral, Knob Creek and the Moxie.  They designed all of the furniture and lighting at Hotel Lucine as well, giving all a freshness while remaining faithful to the building’s original spirit.

LOCAL INFLUENCER EXPLORED THE WOODLANDS TO FIND UNIQUE AND LIVELY DESTINATIONS WHERE YOU CAN DINE, WINE AND ENTERTAIN YOUR FAMILY THIS SUMMER.

The Woodlands is bustling with trendy restaurants, beautiful boutiques, shops and outdoor concert spaces. Within our treelines are lush nature trails, parks and plenty of pools to choose from. Our options are limitless, but it’s summertime and you can never have too much fun. So if you’re not cruising down 30A in a golf cart, or have just returned from Telluride Blues and Brews festival then what are the fun hidden gems within the woods to hangout with your family? Let’s explore what The Woodlands has to offer.

At first glance, this notable nook gives Disney’s Country Bear Magical Jamboree vibes in Frontierland. Park your car, take the path through the trees and you’ll uncover a whole experience that will make you feel like you’re walking in the front door of your neighbor's house. Clad in Americana decor, that represents the owner's passion for his army family background. Supporting the country, the community and honoring those who serve and have served this country. Operated by the family that brought us Sweet Paris and Hunger Crush.

What to order: The chicken fried steak is the best and most popular. Seasoned, doubled breaded and fried in house using locally sourced ingredients. Other popular menu items include the chicken salad and meatloaf. All the sauces are also made from scratch and so are the desserts.

Honor Wall: a place to pin up pictures of all service heroes.

DEACON BALDY'S has an industrial sized patio that seats the entire family plus friends, a place for the kids to play and dog friendly! Modeled after Deacon Mike Mims party gathering lifestyle, it is an homage to a great human who worked hard and played harder. Deacon Baldy's began as a custom tailgating vehicle shop where one could go to build the ultimate partying machine on wheels. Owners Kevin Mims and Joey Muckenthaler carried his legacy on when they decided to park a few food trucks in front of an open air industrial sized patio. The patio is covered by huge circling fans that combat the heat while the patrons enjoy a variety of food menus and ice cold drinks. They hope to make everyone’s day better by being whatever somebody needs them to be in the moment.

The Need: provide a reasonable destination for parties and families to improve their day with a simple interaction or conversation.

SPLASH INTO SUMMER

TEXAS SWIMMING HOLES

OFFERING A SUMMER ESCAPE

Temperatures are rising and summer is knocking on our door.  We dove into some popular, and lesser-known, swimming holes in Texas to give you options for cooling off from the summer sizzle.

There are two West Texas refreshing options when looking to cool off this summer. Balmorhea State Park offers the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool that is ideal for swimming and scuba for only seven dollars per person over 13. The clear water stays between 72-76 degrees and reaches a depth of 25 feet. The pool is open all year from 8:00 am until sunset and if you arrive early enough you may just get the place to yourself. Once the parking lot is full, visitors who do not already have a reservation are not allowed, so plan your trip accordingly. With an abundance of fish and other water creatures, along with its depth and clear visibility, Balmorhea attracts scuba enthusiasts, too. If you are certified, find another diver (a partner is required) and bring your proof of certification. With this state park in a remote part of Texas, you cannot just happen upon it so it offers a more laid-back option to the well-visited swimming holes of the Hill Country.

The “Quince” is a section of the Nueces River about an hour west from Concan. The “ Quince “ is nicknamed for its 15-foot natural pool near Wood Camp, Texas, perfect for cliff jumping, floating, and sunbathing. This quiet spot is another alternate destination for those looking to cool off without the Hill Country crowds.

Tyler, Texas may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of great swimming holes, Tyler State Park deserves a moment of your time if you’re looking for an East Texas retreat.  A few miles off I-20, this state park boasts a 64-acre lake with a family-friendly swimming area. It may lack in Hill Country clear waters, but what you get in return is more space and recreation options. A short drive through the dense forest and just seven dollars per person over 13 years old brings you to the designated swim area on the lake’s east shore. When you need a break from the water, there are 13 miles of natural trails as well as cabins and campsites to hang your suit for the night.

The Blue Lagoon in Huntsville, Texas made our list of refreshing options as a splash close to home. In just under an hour you can find a spring-fed retreat from the heat in a former limestone quarry whose crystal blue waters look as though they were shipped in from the Caribbean. The Blue Hole is a scuba training facility and only divers can make reservations, but it does offer swimming for non-divers. The Blue Hole is open seven days a week and is $30 per person and $10 per child under nine years old. For casual swimmers looking to cool off, stick to weekdays for your best chance at a plunge here. You must call on the morning you plan to head out and prepare for options in case they are at capacity when you arrive.

The number of Hill Country natural swim escapes is in the double digits and all of them give respite from the summer heat that easily hits triple digits. They are all well-known by those looking to beat the heat, so we have updates and highlights of two of the best. Barton Springs makes the top of every annual list of Texas swimming holes. The 3-acre spring-fed pool remains around a chilly 68 degrees all year long. Located in Zilker Park, this landmark does not require reservations but pack your patience because it gets crowded. The price to take a plunge ranges from $2 to $9 based on age and whether or not you are a resident.

Hamilton Pool Preserve in Dripping Springs, Texas requires a steep, quarter-mile walk to reach the collapsed limestone grotto with a 50-foot waterfall - a sight worth the trek for one of the prettiest settings for a summer swim. Reservations are required for minimal fees and children under 12 are free.

Swim availability in natural bodies of water fluctuate due to weather conditions and bacteria levels.  Be flexible when planning a trip to one of these refreshing spots and be sure to call ahead or check websites and social media when planning. It is always a good idea to research what other activities are available in the area should your swim trunks need to stay in the suitcase once you arrive.

Pickleball is touted as America's fastest-growing sport, and it is popping up on makeshift courts and driveways everywhere. To some, pickleball is tennis', noisier little brother, and once you've hit the courts, you'll understand the addiction, all while getting a little exercise and being social. While it is more popular than ever, Pickleball dates back to 1965 and is aptly named after one of the founder's dogs, Pickles, on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle. Hit the courts and bring your smack talk and quick shot to Shadowbend Park. At Shadowbend Park, playing at their ten outdoor courts with permanent lines is free, but you must bring your own net. Court reservations are available but not required. Players have access to light, restrooms, and water. See their website for comprehensive information and a summer schedule of events. Stay out of the kitchen (the seven-foot zone on each side of the net, known as the non-volley zone) this summer by giving Pickleball a shot. The equipment is inexpensive and can be found at all sporting goods locations.

Another location, The Woodlands' Falconwing Park, has eight outdoor hard courts with permanent lines and nets. You can find their summer schedule or reserve a court at pickleheads.com

Get a bird's-eye view of The Woodlands this summer by ziplining at Texas TreeVentures, an aerial adventure course adjacent to the George Mitchell Nature Preserve. A safety orientation is provided at the start, and a reservation time is included in the three-hour adventure, which involves scaling staircases and resting on platforms between the stations. Even if you don't feel daring, you'll be safely clipped into a marked route and can cruise along at your own pace. The zipline course is designed to be a "challenge by choice" to pick and choose how you want to scale the heights. It's a popular summer family, corporate, and date venue so online reservations are encouraged. While the course is designed for everyone's enjoyment, children from six to eight years of CONTINUED >

age require an adult monitor on the course. For children ages nine to 12, one adult per two children is required. To traverse the treetops independently, individuals must reach 70" in height and weigh between 44 and 275 pounds for equipment safety specifications.

Texas TreeVentures hosts private events and birthday parties if you need a unique space for a memorable time. General admission for adults is $45, and children's tickets for ages six to 12 are $40. This tremendous outdoor adventure under the canopy of green leaves is tranquil, not just an adrenaline experience.

Dust off your bikes, fill the tires, and bring back childhood nostalgia while exploring the many bike trails in the Woodlands Falconwing Park. The 10.34-acre park has all the amenities for a fun day. The Woodlands boasts over 111 bike trails, and the trails at Falconwing Park, on the Indian Springs side, are well marked, and the maps can be viewed online. No matter your ability level, choose from on-road and off-road pathways for every type of rider and enjoy the ride through nature.

These local Texas trails offer various options for an afternoon of fun. Pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it in the park while getting in a bit of exercise putting the pedal to the metal. Better yet, get fitted for a bike or get a tune-up and commit to exercise through cycling on the trails and in your neighborhood. Trek Bicycle The Woodlands in Cochran's Crossing will tune up your bike, get your tires properly inflated, or fit you for matching bikes - the perfect birthday or anniversary gift. Or find bikes to rent at ECO EZ-Riders in Hughes Landing for a tour around our city.

The bike trails at Falconwing Park are for all levels.

“I love connecting people and business owners to each other and witnessing genuine connections grow into personal and business relationships,” says Montgomery County Hispanic Chamber (MCHC) President Miguel Lopez. “It gives me great pride and satisfaction seeing an introduction turn into something, even if it’s just a new friendship, but when a business is able to grow and thrive due to the connections made through the chamber, that is an impactful feeling that I don’t think will ever grow old for me.”

MCHC is one of five chambers that compose the Montgomery County Coalition of Chambers. “We are also members of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber, as well as members of the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives,” he says.

The Hispanic population increased from 165,398 to 217,409 between 2010 and 2020. Hispanics now account for 25.2 of residents in Montgomery County.  This growth is up 9.57% from 2017, when 23% of the population was Hispanic.

“I've been involved in many organizations/non-profits over the almost 30 years I’ve lived in The Woodlands.  I have been involved from the beginning of my career in The Woodlands as a banker, served as Executive Director for the SBDC, started and operated my own business consulting business, and now I’m fortunate enough to serve as the President for the MCHC.”

In the summer of 2022, Lopez and a handful of individuals got together and reactivated the chamber. “For an array of reasons, the chamber had become dormant, and I felt strongly there was a need for it,” he says. A special recognition and appreciation goes out to our chairman of the board, Julio Resendez, who has gone above and beyond the duties of a typical chairman with us.

Miguel grew up in Humble and graduated from Humble High School. “Two weeks after graduating from high school I was off to the Marine Corps where I served as a Machine gunner (0331) in an infantry unit stationed in Camp Pendleton, CA. I look back fondly on my four years in the Marines for it was there that I became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Upon my honorable discharge in 1990, and with the assistance of the G.I. Bill, I started at what is now Lone Star College. I took as many classes as I could before transferring to Sam Houston State University where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice.”

WHAT’S

NEXT FOR MCHC AND WHERE DO YOU SEE THE CHAMBER IN THE NEXT THREE YEARS?

“Though we have come a long way, we still have much to do,” Lopez said. “A top priority is ensuring we provide value to our membership.. I want to ensure we stay on track as we grow with our community. I would like to see us with a larger staff and hopefully we’ll have our own office space in the area soon. I’d like to produce a good solid four to six signature events a year. Creating an event like Adelante! was a monumental effort for us, but a highly successful one.”

“We want to continue to be a voice for the Hispanic business community, yet at the same time be that bridge that provides opportunities for the Spanish and the non-Spanish communities to work together, thus  adding to our thriving local economies,” he said.

Painting has always been a way for me to record memories, like a visual journal. I love to take photos as part of the process, for colors and compositions, feelings and the essence of the moment. Sometimes my photos say enough without their elements being translated into paintings, and I enjoy them for what they are. I don’t usually share my photos but am delighted that 3 have been selected for “The Big Show” at Lawndale Art Center, Houston, it’s the 40th Exhibition which makes it even more special! These photos of reflections of trees in water offer a new persperctive and were taken around The Woodlands area.
