Dear Temecula...

My name is Zoe. This is the "Kids & Pets" issue of Temecula City Lifestyle. I'm a kid, eight years old. I've lived here for over four years and it's my favorite, but I still love Tucson, where I was born. I'm not a pet...but I'm sure you figured that out already. Enough about me and even the pets.

I recommend that since it's summer in Temecula, you, your friends, and family should buckle up for fun! We can all expect Yays!, Yippies! and Wows! Summer in Temecula is fun because there's always something fun to do and we have the best and yummiest food. Being a kid in Temecula is even better because we have tons of summer activities, classes, sports and amazing parks.

If you love pets, this is a great place to be. There are great parks, outdoor areas and even lots of pet friendly restaurants and wineries. Sean told me to put that part about the wineries.

Our family loves living in Temecula, creating this magazine every month, and we hope this issue gives you and your family some great ideas to help you explore and enjoy our wonderful city.

Zoe, CEO (just kidding...)

Hidden Gems: Sheros Retreat

Elegantly Rustic Weekend Glamping Retreats for Women in a Private Setting in the Deluz Hills

“It’s a very empowering thing to give women a day to themselves,” says Sheros Retreat Co-Founder, Margo Jolly.

“Many of the women who come to us are women in transition – someone whose kids have left home, maybe they got a divorce or are getting a divorce, got a job, left a job, just finished college and are exploring what they want to do next... moms who just need a break.

Margo Jolly, Co-Founder of Sheros Retreat at the edge of the infinity pool with crystal quartz singing bowls.

Jolly and her close childhood friend opened Sheros (“we took ‘heros’ and added an ‘s’”) Retreat in 2015 at Jolly’s 20 acre compound in the hills of Deluz as an occasional day retreat space for women.  Jolly says that at that time, she had no idea the power of what guests would experience there.  “It all changed in 2020 when one of the women called late at night and said, “I just want to say thank you very much for what you offer at Sheros – I did not commit suicide today because of something that I experienced there.’  This woman was a single mom and would have left 4 children.  That changed everything for me.  We realized one day wasn’t enough and we decided to offer the retreat as a 3-day weekend,” Jolly says.

Today, Sheros offers an elevated glamping retreat for women who want to reconnect with their inner spark, unleash their creativity and celebrate their sisterhood.  Sheros guests can enjoy an ever changing choice of experiences including yoga, massage, ceramics, aromatherapy, honey and wine tasting,

meditation, reiki and fine food.  “We bring in a private chef and guests can choose their own menu.  We really try to pamper guests – and everything is included.”  Jolly calls the experience “rustic elegance.  We have three outdoor windowed tipi-style tents with beds and quality bedding that can accommodate two people each as well as an outdoor eco bathroom.  And there’s also a bedroom in the main house that can accommodate non campers.”  “We usually schedule the retreats about 6-8 weekends a year, mostly in the Spring and Fall.  People can also book their own weekends and we even do themed weekends, team building and empowerment workshops.”

“What we’re here to do is provide a safe space, some prompts, some meditation, movement, meals – just a space for yourself based in personal development. We provide a nonjudgemental, non faith based, non color-based safe, healing place for women to be themselves.  I love that I get to share my home.  It feels so good to live here and to be able to share it.”

Neurofeedback for Mental Health

Quickly and easily overcome anxiety, fear and worry in children with Neurofeedback

At Temecula Neurofeedback, we provide mental health support to our community and beyond. One of the most common reasons adults and children come to us for neurofeedback is for anxiety disorder treatment.

In the U.S., adolescents are more likely to experience depression or anxiety than adults. A 2020 study found that 5.6 million children, or 9.2% of people aged 3-17, had problems with anxiety. In 2022, the National Institute of Mental Health reported that anxiety disorders affected about 19.1% of the U.S. adult population with rates in children and adolescents even higher, at about 50%. The World Health Organization also calculated that in 2022 approximately 301 million people worldwide, including 58 million children, suffered from anxiety, making anxiety the most common and disabling mental health illness in the world.

So, how do parents support their children during this mental health crisis?

First, parents need to identify anxiety, which can be tricky. Children often don’t know they’re experiencing anxiety, they can’t clearly articulate their feelings, and their behavior doesn’t always seem like anxiety. In children, anxiety can manifest like anger, crying, stubbornness, defiance, and avoidance. Ask them if they are worried or scared. Parents need to be detectives and try to understand why their children behave in these difficult ways instead of attributing it to bad behavior.

Once anxiety is identified, parents can help their children cope. Traditional psychotherapy techniques can help manage anxiety symptoms, but they don't address the root of physiological issues, such as neurological impairment and insufficient serotonin. Plus, most children don’t want to or can't talk about their feelings in therapy. Although medication is often seen as a solution, it doesn’t help the psychological issues associated with anxiety, and it doesn’t improve symptoms for 50% of people! Moreover, most parents don’t want their children on medication anyway. So, what’s the answer?

We typically eliminate anxiety in about 12, 8-minute sessions by teaching the brain and body to function calmly and rationally. Plus kids feel great afterwards and call our office their "happy place."

You can try what I term the C.A.L.M. method for addressing anxiety.

C- communicate with your child to identify their feelings.

A- allow and affirm their feelings, even if they’re irrational.

L- listen as they speak, and don’t correct them; just let them vent.

M- manage their environment or the situation that’s causing anxiety.

Don’t force anything that may exacerbate their fears. Empathy is key!

Also, consider neurofeedback with us. With over 8 years of experience, we've helped hundreds of people by addressing both the physiological and psychological aspects of anxiety. Our scientifically proven system raises serotonin, calms the mind's and brain's fear messages, and relaxes the central nervous system. We typically eliminate anxiety in about 12, 8-minute sessions by teaching the brain and body to function calmly and rationally. Plus, kids feel great afterwards and call our office their "happy place." We have such great results that even the most skeptical people are amazed at the significant improvements they experience.

Pat Comerchero, Founder & Director of Pennypickle's Workshop. "I'm reclusive just like Professor Pennypickle," she says.

The Brilliant Mind Behind Pennypickle's

Pat Comerchero On Her Inspiration for Temecula's Beloved Pennypickle's Workshop Children's Museum

“I am reclusive, just like Professor Phineas T. Pennypickle," laughs Pat Comerchero, Founder and Director of Pennypickles Workshop Children's Museum in Temecula.  "Pennypickles is a place unlike any other - when you visit Pennypickles, you are seeing something that is immersing you in another world.  It’s on the level of an amusement park-type experience rather than a typical children’s museum experience.”

Located on Main Street in Old Town Temecula, Pennypickles Workshop, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in June, was designed to “get kids into that headspace of magic and discovery through play and imagination.  We are a place where dynamic things happen,” Comerchero says.  “We’re about helping kids realize that there’s more to the world than just video games and toys.”

Spanning 7,500 square feet over multiple floors, Pennypickle’s Workshop was created to represent the home of the fictional reclusive inventor and scientist,

Phineas T. Pennypickle, Ph.D., an absent minded professor and time traveler who has befriended and worked with some of the world’s most brilliant minds, including DaVinci, Einstein, Edison, Marconi, Tesla and Houdini.  The Professor’s workshop is littered with gadgets and gizmos that provide children and visitors with the opportunity to learn through play.  Comerchero remarks, “Science and magic go hand in hand.  Science looks like magic and magic is actually science.  It’s all about tapping in to the ‘fun factor’ so that it doesn’t feel like another boring field trip.”

Within its walls, visitors can experience and interact with quirky and wondrous inventions and experiments in many of the rooms of the Professor’s home.  Of the many rooms that are dedicated to exploration, guests can delve into time and travel in the Professor’s Library, perception and illusion in The Bedroom, sound and vibrations in The Music Room, power and electricity in The Dining Room and physics and chemistry in The Kitchen.

I said, "There needs to be crazy inventions everywhere, and secret tunnels..."

“ More than one million visitors have passed through the Workshop's doors since it opened in 2004. "We tap into the 'fun factor,'" says Founder Comerchero.

There are also learning activities and hands on experiences to be had in The Basement, Hallway, The Playroom, The Bathroom and The Pantry.

“The world is a very amazing, adventurous place, and when I first came up with the concept of Pennypickle’s Workshop, it was sort of like Tom Sawyer meets Back to the Future…where there’s a synergy between the past and what will happen.  And that is why the Professor is a time traveler because he can engage with famous scientists of the past and then come home and make a wacky invention.  You can see that personality around the Museum….in his writings on the walls, in the cases.”  Comerchero believes that the Museum’s design and exhibits make it appealing to people of all ages.  “Little kids can come in and run around and play with things and as they get older they start reading and having the ability to notice the Professor’s humor.  Adults and teenagers love the Museum because it’s so quirky and Steampunky and different – it’s a unique place.”

Over the course of its 20 year history, Pennypickle's Workshop has played host to thousands of school field trips from all around Southern California and has seen more than one million visitors.  The Workshop has won several awards including a THEA award from the Themed Entertainment Association, two awards from the California Park and Recreation Society, and Nickelodeon Networks' Parents' Pick Award for Best Museum and Best Birthday Party Place.  The Workshop is also available for birthday parties and private events.  And word has been spreading.  Pennypickle's Workshop has also been named as a recommended place to visit by such noted publications as AAA Magazine, Westways and Money Magazine.   Comerchero says, “We’ve become a

destination rather than just a place for locals to visit.  We’ve become a ‘must see’ and we’re very proud of that.”

The mom of two whose background is in journalism, says her inspiration for the Workshop was borne out of her desire to make learning more interesting and effective while homeschooling her two sons.  “I realized that they loved history and science more than any other subjects.  And so I started turning everything into science experiments.  And when [my husband] Jeff became Commissioner for the Community Services Department in Temecula, I got to know people at the City.”  Sometime in 1997, Comerchero went to Temecula’s then-City Manager and pitched an idea.  “I said, ‘The way Temecula is growing and the way it’s growing with families, it really needs a children’s museum.’  I said, ‘It needs to be immersive….and going into someone’s home is immersive - you see what their personality is like.  There needs to be crazy inventions everywhere, and secret tunnels and every spot that you look there has to be something engaging.’  It never would have happened without Jeff’s involvement and him helping the City seeing what it could be.”

Comerchero is thrilled with the realization of her ideas.  “I was there through the entire building process.  Going in and seeing what was in my head actually coming to life was like an experience I can’t even explain, it was so amazing.  And I try to plan every new exhibit that way – what is fun for kids?  What are they getting a kick out of that is teaching them a scientific concept?”    She is excited to put her mind to work once again developing new experiences and attractions at the Workshop.  “Anytime I plan something new, I think about what would be fun?  Soon, we’re going to have an exhibit where kids can actually catch fish out of the Professor’s CONTINUED >

bathtub, and I want to expand The Music Room to include a larger permanent display for visitors who gather in that room.”

And now, 20 years in, Comerchero is prouder than ever of the work the Museum is doing.  “One of my initial inspirations was that years ago I had read that a scientist from Riverside had won the Nobel Prize.  And when he was asked what his inspiration was, he said that when he was a kid his parents had bought him a chemistry set and that’s how he got started.

And that one event was so inspiring to me – I wanted to spark an interest in someone’s future.  You never know the effect your works will have on someone else or the impression that you are making upon kids and where that will take them.   I’m very proud of the fact that we have kids who have visited us and who now are in science careers.  One of our former visitors is now in microbiology, there’s someone in the aeronautics industry, and others in the chemistry field.  And that’s very meaningful.“

The Illusionator, one of Professor Pennypickle's wacky inventions featured in The Bedroom, which is dedicated to perception and illusion.
Visitors can imagine a world of time travel and exploration in The Library at Pennypickle's Workshop.

Upcoming 2024 events include Jules

BIGFOOT ART BRINGS BIG TIME SKILLS

ARTICLE BY MELISSA COLOMBO PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAWNA SARNOWSKI
Renowned local illustrator Tony Moramarco has spent two decades bringing art lessons to the Valley.

When it comes to activities for kids in the Temecula Valley, there’s one business as legendary as its namesake: Bigfoot Art Classes.

Local illustrator and instructor Tony Moramarco has been bringing his immense skill and creativity to the Valley since 1998 when he established his “Cartooning with Bigfoot” workshop.

Moramarco, who became a nationally published cartoonist at the age of 19,  attended the Art Institute of San Diego, studying Illustration and Graphic Design. Following graduation, Moramarco worked as a Cartoonist and Art Director for a Looney Tunes licensee in Washington DC.

He has taught over 50,00 students since beginning the Bigfoot Art Classes.

His students share his passion for art and for Tony's skill. One parent said "He keeps them engaged and enthused while they learn and his lessons encourage them to personalize their art, each child's work is unique."

Another said that their child's "art has improved dramatically and she absolutely loves going. If you have a child that likes to draw, you really ought to experience the best art classes around!"

Bigfoot Art Classes offer a variety of in-person and online classes (in Temecula and Menifee) such as cartooning, anime and more available for registration on their website.

RICH TRADITION OF HEALING

GAIT Program Celebrates 10 Years of Providing Equine Therapy to Special Needs Kids & Families

For more than 40 years, Green Acres Ranch has been a fixture in Temecula's equestrian community, providing horse boarding, riding lessons and summer camps for young equine enthusiasts.  Owner Margaret Rich, her daughter Katherine and son Roy, have taught thousands of students and served hundreds of families who have come to the Ranch to learn English and Western riding, cow horse skills and dressage.

"Amazing things happen when a kid gets on a horse," says GAIT Founder & Director, Margaret Rich.
"Amazing things happen when a kid gets on a horse," says GAIT Founder & Director, Margaret Rich.

But Rich noticed that many of her students had disabilities and that they needed instructors with special training to accommodate their needs.  So in 2010 she became PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International) certified and the GAIT (Green Acres Interactive Therapies) Program was born.

GAIT provides interactive equine therapy to students with ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, intellectual disability, learning disability, vision impairment, spinal or head injury and other developmental delays.

GAIT plays a crucial role in the local community by harnessing the connection between horses, farm animals and students to effectively address the unique learning, developmental, emotional and physical challenges faced by many disabled people.  Now a 501(c) 3 organization, GAIT just celebrated its 10th anniversary of providing much needed therapies to children with disabilities and their families.

“Amazing things happen when those kids are on the back of a horse,” Rich says about GAIT’s interactive therapy.  “Their whole perspective changes.  Many have been immobile in wheelchairs always looking up at everyone.

GAIT Program Founder & Director, Margaret Rich (R) with a GAIT staff member and school horse.
"A horse sucks up your stress," Rich says. "It's a connection you make with that animal."

Then all of a sudden, you put them on the back of a horse and they’re not only mobile, they’re looking down on you.  And that’s very powerful.”

As the owner of Green Acres Ranch and the Founder & Director of GAIT, Rich has long understood the power of horses, not only as an experienced horsewoman, but also in the lives of GAIT’s students.  “It’s the connection they make with that animal.  A horse is nonjudgmental, and when these children go to therapy, they’re in a clinical setting and they [may feel like they’re] being judged.  When they come here, they’re outdoors, getting to enjoy horses.  And horses just suck up all the stress.   Physical activity is a huge healer,” she says.

And Rich has seen some astounding results from her work with GAIT students.  “There’s Emily who couldn’t walk and her doctor said she needed surgery on her hips.  She was able to build up core strength from riding,” Rich says.  “And we had a boy who was totally nonverbal who one day just started speaking.  He was riding and out of the blue he said, ‘Horse!  Horse!’  It was absolutely incredible.”

GAIT receives some outside funding from the City and County, but is mainly dependent upon corporate and private donations to finance the program.  Rich says, “If we can raise enough money beyond our operating expenses, it will go directly to scholarships for GAIT.  And the majority of those donations come from our annual Pony Up for GAIT fundraiser in October.  We have exciting horse events, great food, a big silent auction, all with a Western theme.  It’s a lot of fun.”  (See Sidebar).

DOG

SOCIALIZING TIPS:

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”

Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.

• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it , but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.

• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.

• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.

• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.
