Temecula's Investment Experts

Investment, by definition, is the act of devoting time, effort, energy, or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a positive result. As we prepared for this month's issue, with the theme of investing, we tried to show the myriad ways that we can invest, such as in our community, our relationships, our finances, and our health, along with the importance of doing so. We invest in our community by supporting our local businesses, schools and local organizations. Investing in our finances helps create wealth, meets long-term financial goals, and secures our retirement. On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich our relationships by giving time and effort to the people in our lives that mean the most to us. This type of investment has the most meaningful impact to not only ourselves but to the people closest to us.
As I write this letter, I'm reminded of the investment that people have made in me and my well being throughout the years. People have given their time, like teachers, coaches, and mentors. People have invested their money in the form of a salary, which I used to grow a family. Yet, no two people have invested as much in me as my parents, Steve and Sharon. Without them and their constant, lifelong investment of time, energy, money, and love, I have no idea where I would be—or if you would even be reading this right now. Investment leads to positive changes and outcomes, and my life has certainly benefited from their investment in me.
Investing looks and feels different for each of us and changes all the time. We are faced each day, with choices of how to invest our time, money, energy, and love. In this issue, we highlight some of the ways that you can invest in your community, yourself, and your family—hopefully for the betterment of us all.

Visitors to the Temecula Valley have long felt that the verdant rolling hills and acres of vine-strewn vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see are reminiscent of the best wine regions of Europe. Businessman Dan Stephenson had just such a feeling when he first eyed a 300 acre parcel of land at the entrance of Temecula Wine Country.
After traveling to Europe for the first time in the 1970s, Stephenson fell in love with the magnificent culture, food, wine and countryside of the region and wanted to share it with his friends and family. After he and a business partner bought the parcel, he set about creating a multi-winery resort destination that would celebrate his love of Europe by offering residents and visitors an authentic taste of Spain, Italy and France – all in one location.
Stephenson’s vision included three winery resort destinations at Europa Village that each include a winery and tasting room, hotel accommodations, a restaurant and event spaces – the Spanish themed Bolero Winery, the newly opened Vienza Winery with an Italian theme, as well as C’est La Vie, a French themed winery slated to begin construction in late 2025.
And as every European well knows, what better way to enjoy fine wine than alongside fine food? Under the supervision and creative direction of Executive Chef Hany Ali, formerly Executive Chef at the Four Seasons in Newport Beach, Europa Village offers two bold and beautiful epicurean establishments – one Spanish, one Italian.
Bolero Restaurante was first out of the gate, and focuses on the distinct and varied wines, flavors and culture of Spain. The winery’s signature dining venue, Bolero is set in an architecturally exquisite atmosphere and takes diners on a culinary journey through the regions of sunny Spain. Offering an elevated Tapas menu of authentic Spanish shared
plates including cheeses, meats, fish, vegetables and paellas along with their own fine wines and an expansive menu of wines from Spain, Bolero Restaurante brings the essence of Espana to Temecula Wine Country for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, including brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Reservations can be made at EuropaVillage.com . Check the “Events” page for special chef-curated dinners and chef’s table events.
“The connection we make through food is the most important,” says Chef Hany. “Our goal is to take you on a tour of Spain without having to pack your suitcase or get your passport stamped. We use only fresh, local ingredients from local growers – we don’t just sell food, we sell an experience. And I am so proud when our guests say, ‘I’ve been to Spain and this is as good or better than what we had there,’” he says.
Also under the gastronomic gaze of Chef Hany is Europa Village’s second dining destination, Mercato di Vienza, a casual, grab and go Italian marketplace and deli at the newly opened Vienza Winery. Peckish picnickers can shop for authentic fare like gourmet charcuterie, freshly baked pizzas from the Mercato’s own wood fired oven, a choice of 6 different gelattos made from Chef Hany’s own recipes, Italian sodas, specialty oils, olives and culinary tools. Guests can enjoy Mercato’s offerings while strolling the gardens or to take home to family and friends. On weekends, the menu expands to offer housemade pastas and meat dishes. Mercato di Vienza is open daily from noon to 6 pm.

- Chef Hany
"Chef Hany is committed to making us the best of the best. I want people to recognize that there can be great food here in Riverside County. Our goal is to have a Michelin Starred restaurant."
- Dan Stephenson, Chairman & Founder, Europa Village
For those who wish to continue the epicurean experience long after they leave the winery, there is the Europa Table Culinary Club. An internationally inspired, curated collection of seasonal offerings, Europa Table promises to take members on a “guided tour of France, Italy and Spain,” via an assortment of culinary discoveries including “premium quality olive oils, culinary delicacies and unique handpicked utensils” shipped directly to their door. For more information, visit EuropaVillage.com and click “Join.”
With two thriving wineries and restaurants and another in the works, founder Stephenson is not content to rest on his laurels.
“USA today voted Bolero #2 Best New Winery in the nation in 2022, but I want to be number one,” he says. A prodigious goal setter, Stephenson has big plans for Europa. “Chef Hany trained in France, worked at the Four Seasons – he’s the whole package. And he is committed to making us the best of the best. I want people to recognize that there can be great food here in Riverside County. Our goal is to have a Michelin Starred restaurant.” Chef Hany is equally optimistic. “Temecula Valley deserves to be on the map. We hope to be on top for our food one day soon.”

HOW
Q -
A - Neurofeedback, like biofeedback, is a noninvasive therapy in which subjects are taught self-control of brain functions via measuring brain waves and providing a feedback signal.
“Because neurofeedback helps people function better across the board, it can help anyone who is experiencing mental health issues, any kind of cognitive impairment, sports performance, learning disabilities, or neurological issues.”
Q - Who can neurofeedback help?
A - Because neurofeedback helps people function better across the board, it can help anyone who is experiencing mental health issues, any kind of cognitive impairment, sports performance, learning disabilities, or neurological issues. More specifically, it can help anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Many people come in with a lot of unresolved trauma. Neurofeedback can help people with OCD and traumatic brain injuries. We can also treat children on the spectrum with autism, and we have kids and adults that we treat for ADHD.
Q - How do you begin the process?
A - We begin by doing a detailed assessment of the challenges that a client is experiencing. Our clients fill out extensive forms to help us identify everything we can help them with, so that when we start, we know how to use the system to benefit that client best.
Q - What is a typical appointment like?
A - Once we identify a patient's issues and goals, we can then begin their neurofeedback sessions. Our practitioners apply an EEG (electrodes that measure the electrical activity in the brain) to the client's head and run the session. These sessions are short, only about 10 minutes or less.
Q - What occurs after the assessment?
A - Based on the results we got from their assessment, we can determine how to use our systems best for that client. We use that information to guide our sessions; typically, we will need about 20 sessions or less.
Q - What are the expected results?
A - Everyone's healing path is going to be different, but it usually only requires a few sessions to see huge results and changes. Neurofeedback is a way to get to the root source of the issue and help them heal.

Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.”
Whether you know him from the Netflix hit Restaurants on the Edge or from his absolutely mouth-watering food photos as @ dennistheprescott on the ‘gram, this former-musician turned internationally-renowned Chef is an amazingly talented, thoughtful, and globe-trotting force to be reckoned with. When it comes to inspiration for creating experiences around food and your community, as well as creating travel bucket lists to some of the world’s most unique and delicious destinations off the beaten path, Chef ‘Dennis The Prescott’ is a culinary change maker whose feed you’ll want to feast on
Originally an aspiring musician, Canadian-born Dennis Prescott’s journey began while in university with a single invitation from another solo musician who asked him to tour with them around the US. This eventually took him to Nashville where they began making records and pursuing their musical dreams.
Yet, in the midst of all of this, Dennis was not taking care of himself — eating take out, dollar menus, etc, had become a way of life. A friend had a “come to Jesus” moment with him and stressed that he needed to start taking care of himself. Having no idea exactly what that meant or how to do so, the advice was simple: “You need to start eating better.”
“Go to the library and borrow some cookbooks,” his friend suggested. Dennis went to a nearby library and borrowed three books only to have his friend ask why he chose those in particular. Dennis remembers saying verbatim, “I don’t know? The guy on the cover looks kinda good looking, and I feel like I could probably pull these recipes off, and he seems really happy too!” As it turned out they were three books by Jamie Oliver; it’s just that he had no idea who Jamie Oliver was at the time.
Flash forward and Dennis’ first dinner-hosting experiment was made up of twenty people from the music studio, all sitting in camping chairs with beer koozies and makeshift tables in his apartment.
“I remember at the time this moment of, okay, the food is on the table, it’s a stressful thing, and then everybody tucks in and they take their first bite, and there’s a moment of hush that kind of came over everyone; it got really quiet just for a second, and then everyone started talking and getting into it and I fell in love with food right there at that moment.
What eventually followed were 13 episodes over nine months where the Restaurants on the Edge team traveled to and filmed restaurant revivals that included three in Canada, one in the continental US, one in Hawaii, and others outside of North America, including Hong Kong, Slovenia, Austria, Malta, St. Lucia and Finland.

“When you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.
“Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.”
Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland.
“Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.”
Restaurants on the Edge is important and meaningful to Chef Prescott because it tells stories of hope and joy and redemption around the kitchen. Oftentimes the food space can be very stressful, but he believes that at the end of the day, people just want to spend time with other people that they love.
One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start? I don’t know how to get going, so I just don’t.’
Rather than overcomplicating it, Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there.
“Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.”
Retirement marks the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance and sound financial choices. It's often envisioned as a period of relaxation, exploration and deep connection with family and friends. However, this dream doesn't just manifest. It necessitates forward-thinking and detailed planning, regardless of one's financial status. Amid global economic changes, evolving life expectancies and intricate tax systems, an all-encompassing and strategic retirement plan is more crucial than ever.
A key element of effective retirement planning is diversifying your income sources. While staples like 401(k)s or IRAs are foundational, it's equally important to branch out. Dividend-bearing stocks can provide regular dividends, bonds offer both periodic interest and principal return and real estate, whether directly or indirectly owned, has potential for both rental income and value growth. Private investments can also yield passive income and impressive returns.
Tax considerations significantly influence retirement strategies. Each financial action, from asset sales to account withdrawals, can carry tax consequences. Knowing these details can greatly influence one's overall retirement income. Tactics such as Roth IRA conversions can help distribute tax liabilities over time, allowing for tax-free withdrawals later on. Using strategies like tax-loss harvesting can balance out capital gains, ensuring proactive steps to reduce tax impact.
Annuities have long been recognized as a popular retirement income source. An annuity is essentially a financial contract that can
offer a steady and predictable income, with options that might even extend to lifetime payouts. Available in varieties like fixed, variable and indexed, they often come with tax advantages. However, retirees should also be aware of certain drawbacks. These might include fees and expenses, issues around liquidity, and potential concerns related to inflation.
Delving into the world of Alternative Investments, retirees can consider assets such as hedge funds, private equity and real assets, among others. These investments may promise higher returns and provide diversification away from traditional stocks and bonds. However, the complexities of these investments mean they often come with challenges like illiquidity, higher fees and the need for a thorough understanding of the investment itself.
Delaware Statutory Trusts (DSTs), while not familiar to everyone, can be a potential retirement income source. Historically rooted, DSTs offer a form of passive real estate investment, which can lead to regular distributions. They also open doors to 1031 exchange possibilities, offering tax deferral benefits. But, just like any other investment, DSTs have their limitations, notably the lack of liquidity and the heavy reliance on trust management.
Introduced by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, Qualified Opportunity Zones (QOZs) were designed to spur economic development. Investing in these zones can lead to deferral, reduction and even the potential elimination of certain capital gains taxes. However, they often require a long-term investment horizon, and retirees must be well-versed with the specifics of the chosen opportunity zone.
“USING STRATEGIES LIKE TAX-LOSS HARVESTING CAN BALANCE OUT CAPITAL GAINS, ENSURING PROACTIVE STEPS TO REDUCE TAX IMPACT.”
Rental Income remains a favorite for many looking for consistent returns. Whether through direct property ownership or Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), real estate can offer passive income, tax benefits and appreciation. Yet, the responsibilities tied to property management, the uncertainties of market fluctuations and other associated costs must not be ignored.
The backbone of many retirement plans, Social Security Income, provides a safety net for millions. Established with the intent of financial assistance, the amount one receives depends on various factors. There are also strategies retirees can employ to maximize these benefits, such as deciding on the optimal time to claim or considering the implications of working while receiving benefits.
Beyond the immediate realm of retirement, estate planning emerges. This encompasses not just post-retirement arrangements but also asset distribution for future generations or charitable endeavors. Regularly reviewing wills, trusts and beneficiary designations ensures alignment with changing circumstances.
Philanthropy seamlessly integrates with retirement plans. Beyond fulfilling a personal mission to give back, it also carries financial benefits. Using instruments like donor-advised funds or charitable trusts lets individuals make impactful societal contributions while enjoying tax advantages.
You only get one retirement. In the ever-evolving world of finance, staying updated and flexible is essential to ensure the continued relevance and efficiency of one's retirement strategy.
