Celebrating Community this Father’s Day

We all likely have a man in our life who we admire, look up to, hope to emulate or model our life after and for me, that man is my father-in-law. For the longest time he was Mr. Casciato but once he figured out I wasn’t going anywhere, he said I could call him Gene. Within a couple of years, I had convinced his daughter to spend the rest of her life with me and we announced our engagement. While the engagement was not necessarily a surprise to anyone, he took the opportunity to tell me “You know, there’s never been a son-in-law who was worth a darn” and given he too was a sonin-law, I felt as though I had been accepted as one of his own.
As the years have passed, I have had a front row seat to the life of and occasionally been the only witness while Gene has diligently provided for his family, genuinely cared for his siblings, demonstrated what friendship is really all about and truly loved his wife, of more than 50-years, as she slowly lost her memory to Alzheimer’s. His understanding that his life, as the husband to his wife, father to his daughters, son to his parents and brother to his siblings, is one of sacrifice, hard work, determination, but also joy. He has been a reliable and stabilizing force in our family and an honest sounding board for important decisions. He is and always will be my hero and a hero to my children.
I tell you about my hero because my life is better because of him. This, our Men’s issue, is released as we approach Father’s Day, and my hope is that the following pages will remind you of those men in your life who make you proud, as we tell some of the stories of men in our community who inspire through their excellence. Whether guiding individuals through an uncertain legal maze or providing insight as well as a friendly reminder about keeping your home comfortable, our subject matter experts generously lend their advice. You will also find a genuinely unique contractor whose skill set provides his clients with lasting value and finally a seasoned automotive up-fitter helping customers determine how to best equip their vehicles for their lifestyle. Join us in celebrating each of their contribution to our community.

Adventure Awaits

Explore the Backcountry of Snohomish with Dana Swanson of Allied Motorsport
ARTICLE BY LAWSON COY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIFE N LIGHT
History, Community, Honesty and Adventure. These are the main themes that quickly become apparent from just one conversation with Dana and Bree Swanson owners of Allied Motorsport.
When walking into the building, located just off Bickford in Snohomish, the showroom greets visitors with all sorts of products to help enhance their off-roading experience. However, the highlight will surely be the firm handshake and smile from Dana, quickly followed with “What can we do to help?”

Both Dana and Bree are graduates of Snohomish High School and Bree is a 4th generation Snohomish resident. When asked about why they settled in Snohomish, Dana responds with “Both our families are from Snohomish, we graduated from Snohomish. I’ve worked in Snohomish before I spent some time working for various shops in Marysville, but I always find myself coming back to Snohomish.”
Bree follows up with “Snohomish is home.”
When told that the article would primarily focus on Dana for our June 2024 Men's Issue, Bree proceeded to talk about how much she and other people adore him and his genuine care. “I get to hear from people who have known him longer than the 13 years we have been together - I married a man of integrity, I know that. But hearing other people see some of the same wonderful things just speaks to how much he cares.”
Dana comes with 40 years of consistent experience in the automotive industry, working primarily in service writing and researching parts for clients. One thing that sets Dana apart from others is that he is always happy and willing to jump into the hands-on work with his crew of highly skilled technicians.

Dana’s experience offers him a unique perspective when it comes to serving his own customers. While talking with him, it is clear that he is always looking to do right by the customer. When asked about the standard in the industry, Dana answers with “A lot of people (in this field) aren’t big picture and that's the problem. It’s hard to see the big picture of fixing something just because you should. It costs you money and time today. But if you don’t fix it today, as a business owner, that can cost you a customer tomorrow.”
“He’s been doing this a long time, so he has built his idea of how he wants to treat and help customers, and that is shown by how many of our clients have been with him since the beginning,” added Bree.
This was made evident last year when Dana and Bree found themselves in unfamiliar territory. One of Dana’s long-time customers came to him and asked what Dana would need to open his own shop. His customer was willing to be the investor for Dana’s dream, and that quickly became a reality. Over the next 4 months, with some vision, faith, and help from their community the doors at Allied Motorsport were opened to the world. “How this happened, isn’t the way we would have done things in our minds, it was painful, but people kept showing up to help along the way,” says Dana.
As one long-time Allied customer stated, “It doesn’t matter where Dana is working, it's not about the shop, people follow Dana. He has always done right by me, and I trust him.”
To ensure that you and your family not only get to wherever your adventure takes you, but also return safely, go see Dana at Allied Motorsport 1824 Bickford Ave Suite C, Snohomish or find them on the web at www.alliedmotorsport.com

expert ASK THE LOCAL
PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR THE HEAT OF SUMMER AND CARE FOR YOUR AIR CONDITIONING
Darrick Philip, owner of Lifetime Heating, Cooling, and Electric, shares suggestions for successfully making the seasonal transition and avoiding emergencies over the summer.
“ It’s best to keep the air conditioning set at a comfortable temperature all the time and not have it fluctuate a lot. Air conditioners do not recover temperature differences as easily as a furnace might when you're heating.”
What
should homeowners do to prepare their air conditioning units for summer?
As homeowners start turning on air conditioning, they need to be aware of airflow. Air conditioner units are sensitive to restrictive air flow, so filters should be changed every 1 to 3 months and the vents should be balanced for the best airflow for cooling your home. Check for and remove debris, weeds, and other plants growing up around equipment outside so that it has free airflow there as well.
What preparations are best left to professionals?
Having a professional provide service and maintenance on your equipment allows for issues to be addressed right away without having a breakdown. A tune-up includes having filters replaced, coils cleaned, and drains cleared out. We use special cleaners that don't damage the fans or the equipment and get all the grime and build-up off the fans and coils, both inside and outside.
Typically, systems have buildup from dirt, dust, and sometimes the moisture that is on there will grow algae in the drains. A technician uses a special treatment to flush and clean out the system.
What else do you recommend for a cool summer?
When cooling, the name of the game is consistency. It’s best to keep the air conditioning set at a comfortable temperature all the time and not have it fluctuate a lot. Air conditioners do not recover temperature differences as easily as a furnace might when you're heating. If you’re trying to cool 5 or 10 degrees, it's going to take a lot longer, especially if you've turned it off before you went to work and turned it back on when you got home. You may not recover on a warm day quickly enough to be comfortable.
Lifetime Heating, Cooling, and Electric services all types of air conditioning brands and systems and has great solutions for seasonal allergies and air quality. For more information, visit Lifetimeheating.com or call/text 425-553-4328.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, ACCOUNTABILITY, AND RESPECT
What to look for when you find yourself in need of a Personal Injury Attorney.
ARTICLE BY SNOHOMISH CITY LIFESTYLE STAFFPHOTOGRAPHY BY MURPHY TRIAL LAW
While no one relishes the idea of choosing a personal injury attorney, selecting one who is willing to go to trial rather than settling and whose reputation for doing so is established can significantly impact the outcome of your case. Jason Murphy is genuinely intent on taking his client’s case to court and that is what makes him uniquely qualified as a personal injury attorney.

Having grown up in Queens, New York, Jason became interested in the Law, primarily because of the opportunity to work in and the set of skills required to be effective in the courtroom. Over the years, he has developed a set of core values or philosophy that guides his work. This includes experience, education, accountability, and respect.
First and foremost, the experience of a personal injury attorney who is willing to and preparing from the outset to go to trial translates into a reputation that doesn’t go unnoticed. Insurance companies, typically a major party to these types of cases, maintain information about the attorney they may face and know what the likelihood of a trial is. Since an insurance company is primarily concerned with cost and they work to minimize cost, avoiding a lengthy process coupled with the expense of a trial is their first objective. Another critical aspect is the attorney's role in educating their clients about their rights throughout the legal process. Attorneys who are willing to go to trial often take the time to explain the legal aspects of the case, the potential outcomes of trial versus settlement, and the client's rights in pursuing compensation. This education empowers clients to make informed decisions about their case and ensures that they have a clear understanding of
the legal process ahead. To illustrate another example, Jason explains why it is important for his clients to be well-insured themselves, especially regarding auto insurance, so they can be well-protected from the nearly 25% of motorists who are driving uninsured.
Attorneys who are prepared to take a case to trial are more likely to hold insurance companies accountable and fight for the full and fair compensation each client deserves. By demonstrating a willingness to go to trial, attorneys like Jason, show insurance companies that they are serious about pursuing justice for their clients and will not back down from large corporate law firms.
A skilled trial attorney understands the importance of maintaining professionalism, integrity, and respect toward all parties involved in the case. While it should be obvious, respect for others in the face of a difficult circumstance illustrates humility and a genuine care for others regardless of the situation. Jason understands and appreciates that he represents not only his clients but his community and his family thus conducting his work in an honorable manner is very important to him and those he serves.
If you find yourself in the unenviable position where you need the advice of an attorney, contact Jason Murphy of Murphy Trial Law.
“ATTORNEYS WHO ARE WILLING TO GO TO TRIAL OFTEN TAKE THE TIME TO EXPLAIN THE LEGAL ASPECTS OF THE CASE,

If you are a homeowner and have been for some time, you likely know that there are skilled designers capable of illustrating your vision so a carpenter can assemble it, an installer can secure it for use, and a painter can put the finishing touches on it. Typically, each of these steps requires a different craftsman, excellent at their specialty but rarely will you find someone who can do it all. From imagination, to illustration, to construction and assembly, to fine finish coating, Cameron Sheffield of Makota Painting and Handyman Service is one such craftsman.

Cameron grew up in the Snohomish County area and benefited from watching and working with his father, Buzz Sheffield, who owned Northsound Painting for decades. Working alongside his dad, Cameron was able to develop a strong foundation, built on hard work, integrity, and a genuine interest in others. Couple that with a creative mind and a skilled hand, Cameron saw the opportunity to start his own business, one that would allow him to provide a unique service to those interested in customizing their home to best suit their unique needs.

In 2019, Cameron, along with his wife Natalie, started Makota Painting and Handyman Services, offering creative design, custom millwork and finish carpentry, residential interior and exterior painting, bathroom remodels, decks, fences, and yard-scape services aimed at making outdoor living as beautiful and comfortable as indoor. Much of the work Cameron and his team do is exterior painting and especially during the Spring, Summer, and early Fall seasons but Cameron is known to take on a variety of non-painting projects at the request of those he serves. Whether adding some character and depth to a staircase wall by designing and installing a grid system before painting or re-imagining a backyard for a client who wanted it to be more beautiful and usable, Cameron is intent on listening so he can gain the understanding necessary in bringing the vision to life. “Bringing

to life people's dreams for their homes is something I love to do and something that I will always love to do,” states Cameron, “seeing the smiles on the customer's faces when it is all done is what makes doing this work so amazing and why I do what I do.”
Another aspect that is very important to Cameron is the trust clients have for him and his team. Cameron says, “We treat every home as if it’s our own, ensuring that our customers feel secure and at ease with our services.” It is disruptive to have people working in and around our home but knowing that each employee has been through a rigorous selection process coupled with a thorough background check is emblematic of the seriousness and intentionality Makota applies to each encounter. Because of this and their meticulous attention to detail, Makota is invited back to serve their clientele whenever the need arises, and they have a considerable amount of both referral and repeat business.
As you can imagine, family and community are integral to what makes Cameron and everyone at Makota serve with a level of excellence. Mr. Sheffield (Buzz) continues to paint as his schedule allows, giving Cameron and the team both an extra set of hands but also the wisdom only available from decades of service. Natalie, Cameron’s wife, provides marketing and management oversight for this licensed contractor, allowing Cameron to focus his attention on client needs, guiding his team, and exceeding expectations. Even the name of the company is connected to the family, it is a combination of their daughters’ names – Madison and Dakota.
Additionally, you will find Makota visible in the community supporting local youth fund-raising events, serving at the Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival as well as whenever the community needs manpower to get something done. In short, they are active in business, support our youth, and serve their community with the same level of excellence they deliver to a client.
Makota Painting and Handyman Services is knowledgeable, driven to serve, and capable of making your next project everything you can envision. There are countless contractors who can paint your home, build a deck, repair a fence, replace some baseboard for you provided you know exactly what you want. But very few have the design capability, the imagination to assist you in determining the perfect look for you and your family and then bringing it to life. If you need a visionary, someone experienced and trustworthy, a skilled craftsman, call Cameron Sheffield at Makota Painting and Handyman Services. You will be delighted you did.

EXPRESSIONS IN WOOD
HOW A BOULDER WOODWORKER IS REDEFINING FURNITURE DESIGN

“Woodworking had become more than a hobby, it was all that I wanted to do.”
Woodworking is a deeply personal venture for Nick Ridings, owner of Boulder’s Rooted Furniture. In both his process for creating his custom furniture pieces and in the story of how his company came to be, Nick’s passion for helping people, and for creating and for bringing his clients’ design dreams to tangible life, are constants.
“Furniture is an expression of you,” says Nick. “You choose the clothes you wear, the way you do your hair, how you paint your room. So why shouldn’t you be able to customize every aspect of your furniture in the same way?”
Rooted Furniture provides clients with the opportunity to be more invested and involved in the design of their furniture. Drawing on his background in psychology and various means of communication, Nick created a system to simplify the furniture design process, making it a fun, fulfilling journey in which clients are able to understand their choices and create an accurate vision for their piece. The result is high-quality furniture that truly speaks to their style and needs.
“The average person cycles through furniture every three to seven years,” says Nick. “So wood, chemicals and plastic are just filling up landfills. Rooted was created to give customers truly custom, heirloom-quality pieces that represent their style and that will last for generations.”
Rooted Furniture specializes in creating dining and coffee tables but also offers benches, accessories and many other types of wood furnishings. With White
“My favorite pieces to make are ones that elicit a response.”
Oak as his material of choice given its strength, durability and rich history, Nick also prides his company on the fact that there are no screws or nails in his woodshop. He only builds with traditional joinery so that each piece of wood fits perfectly together—like a puzzle that never comes apart.
Rooted Furniture also offers clients the opportunity to request commissioned pieces, a process that involves collaborating even more closely to discover the client’s hopes for the specific piece. This results in a creative process that, as Nick says, is very meditative. He keeps the future life of the piece top-of-mind throughout the build—whether it’s a rocking chair for a new parent or a dining table for families to eat at every day—and builds each piece knowing that it will be deeply rooted in many future memories.
Moving ahead, Nick looks forward to continuing to create distinct furniture pieces of increasing complexity and beauty for his clients, from cutting boards and simple benches to elaborate dining tables and more.
“My favorite pieces to make are ones that elicit a response,” says Nick. “Our clients will live with and cherish our creations for the rest of their lives. My intention is to imprint their thoughts and energy into each piece and make their connection to their design dream all that much more potent.” RootedFurniture.com
