Adventure, exploration, investigating something new. Is there anything better than discovering a new book, seeing how far a trail goes, or learning what entrée to pair your favorite Cabernet with? We love discovering new things and finding new favorites.
While going to a familiar restaurant and ordering a menu item you know and love provides comfortable familiarity, what about the very first time you ordered that item? Remember how incredible that was. What about that time you visited a national park and discovered why it was set aside for future generations to find and fall in love with?
This issue is aimed at exploration, continuing to learn and find new places, and discovering people and ideas that expand and enrich life. Maybe something that engages your creativity through artistic expression or building something that allows you to utilize your space better. Our community is rich with people who can teach you a new skill as well as venues, flavors, and experiences, all worth a bit of your time.
Our hope is that these pages encourage you to make room for the undiscovered, to prioritize time away from the typical, and to lose yourself on an unexplored trail or in a new book. We would love it if you booked that trip you’ve been thinking about and make time for finding a new favorite.

Every summer residents look forward to strolling through the Snohomish Farmers Market. We visited with Sarah Dylan Jensen, the current director of 3 area farmers markets in Snohomish County, to answer a few questions:
WHEN SOMEONE EXPLORES SNOHOMISH FARMERS MARKET, WHAT CAN THEY EXPECT TO FIND?
We stand by our roots, so of course, you will always find plenty of fresh produce. In addition, you can shop for gifts from local artisans along with artisanal culinary foods and wares from local entrepreneurs. On average we have 115 plus vendor booths to explore every week.
WHERE AND WHEN CAN WE FIND THE MARKET?
You will find us on the corner of Cedar Avenue and Pearl Street in Downtown Snohomish on Thursdays from May to the end of September. Stop by anytime between 3-7pm.
AS THE DIRECTOR, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE FARMERS MARKET?
My favorite part is the fact that we can be that business incubator for the exploring entrepreneur – growing small business and educating community about what makes us special. I also love to encourage people to explore the other farmers markets in the area, there are many and they are all unique.

HOW BACKYARD SHEDS CAN MEET YOUR NEEDS WHILE BRINGING YOUR VISION TO LIFE.
After years of service with the U.S. Navy, then working in the automotive sales, Mark Dreyer tapped into his construction background and began to do home repair work. During that time, when Mark needed a shed for storage, he headed to a local construction supply store and that trip changed the course of his career.
“I looked at a shed kit that they had because I wanted something nice and quickly realized that the kit really wasn’t anything that I would want in my yard,” said Mark. “So, I went inside to price out the materials to do it myself.”
Knowing other homeowners would appreciate a higher quality option than the kits he saw, Mark put out feelers and began building custom sheds. The first one, he admits, was a learning experience, but as the business grew, he implemented systems to make the process more efficient.
“We developed jigs, templates, and processes for things to go smoother,” he explained. “Like how we load our trailers, for example. We load the trailer so that it gets unloaded in the proper order so that guys aren’t having to move things out of the way to get to the materials they need. We also learned what materials to buy that we could use efficiently so we don’t have a lot of waste.”
In 2010, Mark and his wife, Shauna, took the step to build sheds full-time and founded Monroe Shed Depot. The company offers custom-made sheds that range in dimension from eight to four hundred square feet. Although sheds are a great storage solution, many customers use the sheds for a variety of other purposes.
“One of my favorite parts is meeting customers and figuring out how to meet their needs and make their vision come to life,” Mark explained. “I built my mother-in-law a cute little pool shed to cover her pool equipment. For another customer, I built

a small 2x4 shed that he stores things in and it’s right on his deck. Something we’ve also seen more since the pandemic is people using their sheds as extra office or living space.” Additional designs have included garden hutches and bar sheds, which are set up for outdoor entertaining.
When the business first started, Mark enjoyed building the sheds and being outdoors. Over the years, he has also enjoyed the opportunity to mentor and teach skills to those who have come to work with him.
“A high school kid was with me for five or six years. He couldn’t even read a tape measure when I hired him, but we got that all figured out and Julio became an incredible builder,” said Mark. “I really like teaching other people how to do what I know how to do and developing processes in the shop so that we can hire somebody and, within a few days, have them building sheds the way that we want.”
The sheds, which are built using Western Red Cedar, are both sturdy and aesthetically pleasing. “We build sheds you don’t have to hide in the backyard,” said Mark. “You can actually use it as the centerpiece. In fact, we have landscape architects that use our sheds as something that they incorporate into their designs.”

Budget Blinds specializes in the beautification of windows and the functionality of blinds, shades, and shutters by offering aesthetically pleasing designs providing privacy plus light and temperature control options for homes and businesses. As experts in this area, Aaron Miller and his team help customers transition to cordless implements in compliance with the law that went into effect recently banning cords on blinds and shades. Fortunately, advancements in motorization make going cordless easier than ever.
“Technology in the motors allows the use of batteries that do not have to be changed or charged frequently,” he explained. “Motorization gives people solutions to things that they couldn’t do in the past without a cord, such as the ability to control blinds or shades in hard-to-reach spaces.”
Miller, who has years of experience integrating audio-visual technologies in homes and businesses, also understands the technological aspects of automation and the convenience of merging blind and shade automation with other smart technology. “Most blind companies stop at the remote
control, but that’s where we start when it comes to automation and motorization,” he said. “Because of our experience in home automation, we speak the same language as technology integrators and have the ability to work closely with anybody who is installing large scale automation systems to ensure successful integration.”
With automation technology, shades and blinds can be controlled through a smartphone app, with voice technology, and programmed to open and close automatically based on schedules or even the location of the sun. Considering the vast possibilities presented with this technology, Miller anticipates what is to come. “As part of our future, we see ourselves helping customers not only control natural light coming into the home or business, but artificial light as well. To create the perfect environment for everyday living.”

BURKHEAD’S VISION COMES TO LIFE AT THE BURKHEAD ART CENTER
The Burkhead Art Center (BAC) is set on a serene, wooded property in the heart of Snohomish County. The Center stands as a vibrant hub where aspiring artists cultivate their talents, explore diverse mediums, and ignite their imaginations. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a landscape of sculptures, a thoughtfully placed labyrinth, the sounds of nature, and an invitation to create and be exposed to art.
ARTICLE BY AMBER SCHULTHEIS PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANNON BEAUCLAIR
Behind the magic and vision of BAC, is Melinda Burkhead, whose life’s mission is to experience art and sculpture. In addition to being an accomplished sculptor, Melinda holds a Bachelor’s in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Washington and a Master’s Degree of Fine Arts. She previously owned and operated a children’s art center, a coffee shop, and a childcare center. The BAC is a culmination of Melinda’s passion, background, and experience.
When Melinda and her husband Craig discovered the property that is now the
home of the BAC, Melinda felt an immediate resonance with the surroundings; that she is a steward of the land and that it is not only for her but for her to provide a way for others to experience the arts. “This land has the bones that I was looking for, and I really get to put my own signature on it.” Melinda shared. The Center, the large green building with classrooms throughout, features spaces dedicated to ceramics, painting, jewelry making, and welding, and has room to expand offerings as interests
“ THIS LAND HAS THE BONES THAT I WAS LOOKING FOR.”

from students, artists, and prospective students arise. A space where Melinda’s vision can continue to grow and evolve.
When asked about her mission and vision for BAC, Melinda speaks with passion and excitement. “I actually had it built into my mission to support local artists and give them a place to make art, to teach, and to exhibit their work…” She envisions BAC as a meeting space for like-minded creatives to collaborate and be part of a growing artist community.
Something she has found value and meaning in throughout her artistic career.
Melinda grew up in the Pacific Northwest but wasn’t exposed to the value art brings until she was in college. She continues to see a need for earlier exposure to the arts. “My intention for this space is to be somewhere that people can come and both experience and create their own art. I love when people come out to see the art and get inspired.” Melinda talks about her plans for the Center and
shares that the five-acre property will soon become a sculpture garden where Pacific Northwest sculptors can exhibit their work and a destination to explore, get inspiration, and build community.
With the recent opening of the Burkhead Fine Art Gallery earlier this year and upcoming plans to expand the sculpture garden, Melinda’s vision continues to come to life, cultivating the artist community she is so inspired to serve and creating a space for artists and art lovers to spend time surrounded by nature and beautiful art. The Burkhead Art Gallery was recently accepted into the prestigious Seattle Art Fair, taking place July 25-28th.
Upcoming events include recurring art class offerings, monthly Raku demonstrations, Fireside Chats with Local Artists, and Adult Summer Camp: Hands-on Art Retreat. Visit https://www.burkheadartcenter.com/ for the latest classes, events, and opportunities to connect with Melinda and her team at BAC.
