The conversations with my dad when I was calling home from college always went the same ...
“Hi, Dad!”
“Hi, Sweetie. How’s the weather?”
I’d answer (usually it was cold and gray since I went to school in Upstate New York!), and then he’d ask if I needed anything. From there it was, “Great! Here’s your mother.”
… and he’d pass the phone off.
It was a brief conversation, to be sure, but one that, over the years, has come to be filled with meaning—and a shorthand of sorts.
It was his code for making sure I was okay.
It’s not that we never had long conversations, but they always started with him asking about the weather.
Recently, we were with a group of family members and having a lively conversation about a personal situation. My dad chimed in, “Well, how’s the weather?”
And he smiled at me.
The other person was confused, but my dad gave me a look and said, “Ask Michelle—she knows what it means!”
And I explained … it means my amazing dad is dependable, someone who asks about details, and someone who always checks in to make sure you are okay.
It was his way of saying he cared.
In so many ways, my dad and I are similar. In others, not so much. As you can probably tell, I’m a journalist and tend to be wordy. My dad tends to be less so. But whether verbose or brief, the impact is the same—words matter.
So go ahead and read the words on the following pages to learn about some other incredible men. This is our Men’s Issue, and we showcase a few men who live in and care about our city. From making their marks in business to giving back, they make our communities better.
Read about jewelry icon Alfredo J. Molina, how he got his start in business, and what inspired him. We also showcase craft beer flights (let’s raise a glass to that!), amazing golf carts, fun camping spots, and more.
I hope you enjoy the issue!
And Dad (also known as Stu Ackerman), the weather is great. Thank you for being so wonderful. I love you!

As I sat down to write this, I took a moment to think about all the amazing men I have around me in my life. First, I am lucky enough to have two fathers, both of whom have played very different roles in my life in wonderful ways. I have two amazing brothers who are some of my best friends, both growing up and still today. I am married to my very best friend and life partner, who is always supporting, loving, and challenging me to be the best version of myself. Together, we have built a brood of four boys of which are my biggest teachers in life! Don’t forget my late grandfathers, whose unconditional love and affection were magical for me!
I am so very grateful for the male energy I get to experience in those closest to me.
It is so important to recognize those men, young and old, who we get to experience throughout life, every day, as they are the yin to our yang. After all, men are from Mars … which really is a beautiful thing!
I dedicate this letter to all the guys out there who bring beauty to this world in the best of ways. The dads, grandfathers, sons, brothers, and friends— here’s to you!
Be grateful, be kind, and live well,
Tammy Fellows Owner/PublisherThe Legendary Alfredo J. Molina on His Family History and Driving Desire to Give Back
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SOPHIA DUBOIS
A sparkling piece of exquisite jewelry catches many eyes.
However, Alfredo J. Molina knows the real value lies beneath the surface of any gem or metal.
The 11th-generation jeweler, and founder and CEO of the celebrated Molina Fine Jewelers, learned this at the ripe age of 8 from his grandfather and a crew of veteran jewelers in Chicago.
Molina relished recalling the details of how his grandfather introduced him to the tools and how to use them to perfectly flatten out a penny to make it malleable enough to be molded into any shape. Here, Molina learned the science of how time and pressure, when executed to perfection, would yield a treasure.
“Pennies have copper, and copper and gold are similarly malleable,” says Molina, referring to this time in the late 1960s. “My grandfather taught me how to make the metal straight and how to properly shape it to create pieces.”
Over the decades, Molina answered the calling to the craft that’s in his pedigree. His work is legendary, and the preferred pieces of the elite and everyday jewelry enthusiasts alike. He’s created historic pieces ranging from the one-ofa-kind handcrafted platinum Millennium Necklace, which is composed of 57 limited and rare Millennium diamonds with a total weight of just over 73 carats, to the Fiesta Bowl Trophy, which stands 46 inches tall and weighs more than 200 pounds, flaunting 2,400 diamonds and five shades of 18-karat gold, jewelers enamel, sterling silver, lapis, and hand-carved marble.
And in an industry full of competitors— many of them national chains churning out mass-produced wares—Molina’s boutique has maintained the exemplary level of service and detail he’s put forth since the day it opened in 1987.
The Molina family of jewelers’ roots date back to 1634 in Milan, where Molina’s great-great-grandfather started working
with silver and gold, which was extremely rare at the time. It wasn’t a hobby; it was his trade. He was 9 or 10, not much older than Molina was when he started learning the craft.
Over the generations, the Molina family moved through Europe and Cuba, eventually settling in the United States. Molina was born in Santa Clara, Cuba.
His father’s political views clashed with the late former president of Cuba, Fidel Castro, and it cost his father his freedom. While his father was incarcerated under the Castro regime, Molina’s grandfather took him to France out of concern for the rest of the family’s safety.
In 1967, after his father was released, Molina and his grandfather moved to Chicago to be with the rest of his family. This was also where he was introduced to the team of experienced jewelers who would be his first mentors.
“It was just an amazing situation working with a grandfather who was never satisfied. He always required a ‘10’ and nothing less,” Molina says.
But when he got older, working with metals and gems was the furthest thought on his career radar. Molina wanted to be a doctor, and at 21, he got a job working in a Chicago hospital near his home.
It was a time when a person’s finances determined the level of medical care they would receive or not receive. Molina often witnessed severely injured or ill patients enter the hospital only to be sent to another after it was discovered they had no money to pay for treatment.
Molina talks about a man coming in with life-threatening injuries.
The man had no way to pay and was sent away. Concerned about him, Molina found out what hospital he was sent to and, a few hours later, called to see how he was doing. The man had passed.
This was the turning point.
“I felt that this was something I did not want to be. I wanted to help people, not send people away based on their wealth or lack thereof,” Molina says.
While pondering his next move, Molina’s uncle was retiring from the jewelry business and wanted Molina to bring him some tools from back home. Molina agreed and brought the tools from Chicago to Phoenix, where his uncle lived.
Once here, Molina not only found his new home but also found himself pulled into the family business he once tried to avoid. He worked at a jewelry shop owned by his future father-in-law before making the move to break out on his own.
Molina had $1,500 and, with two loans totaling $110,000, opened Molina Fine Jewelers at 12th Street and Missouri Avenue. It was open by appointment only because he was running the business alone.
Five years later, in 1992, Molina moved into his current location at 32nd Street and
Camelback Road. He didn’t have the funds, but the old bank building was perfect. A friend loaned Molina the money to move in, and he’s been there ever since.
Today, Molina enjoys an equally rewarding personal life with his family. His eldest child, Megan Parkinson, supports the business as Molina’s executive assistant. The special part her father’s company has played in the lives of generations of customers is one she is reminded of often. Numerous times she has witnessed someone approaching her dad saying, “Mr. Molina, you sold me my engagement ring!”
“You get to be around people who are celebrating milestones. An engagement. A wedding. The birth of a child. When a woman looks at a piece of jewelry, she knows where she was, what it celebrates, and the feeling she had when she received it,” Parkinson says. “Jewelry lasts generations, and there’s always a story that goes along with each piece. It’s a neat industry to be in.”
Molina capitalizes on his success by giving back. His numerous philanthropic efforts have been lauded with dozens of awards in honor of his contributions to charitable organizations.
And like the reason that sparked his decision to abandon a career in medicine, Molina’s desire to help others has been the motivation behind his business and his generosity.
“I have been very lucky. I started with nothing and had challenges like we all do. But I’ve always had the belief that we need to help people who are less fortunate,” Molina says. “It’s never been about money. It’s always been about doing the right thing for people.”

TASTE YOUR WAY ACROSS ARIZONA’S CRAFT BEER SCENE WITH THESE SAMPLER-SIZE SIPPERS
Trouble deciding which brew to choose when out with friends or on a big date? It is no wonder given that, according to the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, Arizona is now home to more than 95 brewers and 120 licensed breweries—numbers that are growing by the month. Thankfully, guests need not choose when visiting several forward-thinking eateries, bars, and restaurants, each of which offers one or more (often customizable) beer flights, with options ranging from lagers and ales to stouts and sours.
This family-owned brewery, which now has locations in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, is named after the beloved black Lab mix that belonged to the founders. It features 20 taps at any given time, including longtime guest favorites Barkley’s Peanut Butter Cup Porter, Debo’s Sour DBL IPA, and Bear’s Beach Bum Tropical IPA. Beer flights are offered on a board shaped like a dog bone and feature five 4-ounce pours of five craft brews of the guest’s choosing for $9.50. UncleBearsAZ.com
PHX Beer Co. currently has 16 craft beers available at its Scottsdale restaurant and Downtown taproom, as well as a limited edition Shazaam! IPA, which was released in honor of longtime Phoenix Suns announcer Al McCoy, who retired after this season after 51 years on the mic. While that particular IPA is only available
in four-packs, there are several beer flights from which to choose. The most popular flight combination consists of four 5-ounce pours of the Iron Horse Porter, Monsoon IPA, Sunset Sour, and White Chocolate beer. It arrives on a custom-made wooden block and costs $8.50. PHXBeerCo.com
Little-known fact: O.H.S.O. stands for Outrageous Home Brewer’s Social Outpost, and in addition to its dozens of craft beers on tap and a selection of Arizona beers available, its Arcadia location offers homebrewers the chance to make a reservation so that they can brew onsite several times a month. In addition, all three of the O.H.S.O. locations across the Northeast Valley—North Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and Arcadia—offer customizable beer flights where guests can mix and match 3-ounce pours of up to four varietals for just $2 each. OHSOBrewery.com
THIRSTY LION GASTROPUB
There are nearly 30 craft beers and ciders on tap at Thirsty Lion Gastropub at Desert Ridge Marketplace, including several local and regional favorites. The pub always has one flight on the menu that solely focuses on craft beers from State 48. Currently, the massive, beautifully presented Arizona craft flight is available for $12 and features 4.5-ounce pours of Papago Orange Blossom Wheat, Oak Creek Amber, Dragoon IPA, Phx. Beer Co. Arizona Gold Ale, Four Peaks Kilt Lifter, and Mudshark Vanilla Caramel Porter. ThirstyLionGastropub.com
HUSS BREWING CO.
Huss Brewing Co. has three locations around the Valley, including its flagship taproom in Uptown Phoenix, an outpost in Tempe, and the newest taproom in Downtown Phoenix, each of which offers a wide variety of fresh, quality beers that can be served by the pint, pitcher, or in a flight of four 4-ounce pours. Among the beers on tap right now are Huss’ flagship brew, which is the Scottsdale Blonde, along with newcomers to the family like Papago Blueberry Wheat and Rio Salado Mexican Lager. The flights are $8. HussBrewing.com
TVG TAPROOM
This beer and bottle shop, equipped with board games aplenty and a mural of a gorilla (TVG=The Vanilla Gorilla) wearing sunglasses that bear the reflection of a pop-art take on an Arizona sunset, boasts 24 taps and nearly 100 bottle options. It offers all its tap beers by the glass and pint, but also in 5-ounce pours so that guests can also create their own custom tasting menu. TVGTaproom.com
PEDAL HAUS BREWERY
Known for its locally made, award-winning craft beers like the Day Drinker Light Lager, German-style pilsner, traditional Kolsch, and Amber ale, Pedal Haus offers the option to build your own beer flight by choosing from any of the 12 beers on tap. All beer flights include four 5-ounce pours, and flights vary from $10 to $15, depending on the beers chosen. PedalHausBrewery.com

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR CHILD CRISIS ARIZONA?
I lead our resource development and communications teams in all of our philanthropic and marketing efforts. Essentially, I am focused on connecting our community of supporters with the mission and vision of Child Crisis Arizona, including the progress on our 38,000-square-foot, climate-friendly, net-zero campus, currently under construction.
WHY IS IT SUCH AN IMPORTANT ORGANIZATION?
We serve the Valley’s vulnerable children and families, and we are committed to preventing child abuse and neglect through education and intervention. Our services include foster care and adoption services, early education, communitywide parenting classes, workshops, and support groups, and we also operate emergency shelters for children ages 2 to 10.
YOU GREW UP IN SCOTTSDALE AND WERE A YOUTH OF THE YEAR FROM THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS!
HOW DID BEING PART OF THAT ORGANIZATION INSPIRE YOU?
The Boys & Girls Clubs inspired me to keep children and teens safe and help end the cycle of child abuse and generational poverty.
WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?
I am a kid at heart. If you walked into my office, you would be bowled over by the colors, kids’ artwork, my foam finger collection, and the copious Phoenix Suns memorabilia. I love to have fun while I am working. It is important to have that balance.
COMPETING, HELPING OTHERS, OR INNOVATING, THESE FOUR MEN ARE MAKING AN IMPACT
WHAT LED YOU TO LAUNCH MICAMP SOLUTIONS?
I established MiCamp Solutions after observing the challenges my franchise business encountered due to high credit card processing fees. My goal was to develop a cutting-edge, efficient, and innovative solution to foster the success of businesses navigating similar obstacles.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COMPANY’S ACHIEVEMENTS?
A leading payment company in the United States, MiCamp serves 28,000 clients worldwide, processing $25 billion in transactions each year. In partnership with over 500 independent service organizations and holding the esteemed title of No. 1 Fiserv ISO, MiCamp stands proudly within the exclusive Chairman’s Circle. We are also a fourtime Inc. 5000 award recipient.
YOU LAUNCHED THE REVOLUTIONARY MIPOS PROGRAM. CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHAT THAT IS?
The MiPOS program, a free and vendor-agnostic POS placement solution, follows the slogan “You Pick and We Pay,” enabling merchants to choose their preferred POS provider while taking advantage of MiCamp’s cash discount program upon signing a merchant agreement.
WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON?
MiCamp Solutions is transitioning into a Full-Service Provider (FSP), a change that will invigorate the company. Through this, we’ll deliver a comprehensive suite of services, encompassing payment processing, software, and support to address the varying needs of clients.
YOU LIKE TO GIVE BACK THROUGH MICAMP CARES … MiCamp Cares represents the philanthropic division of MiCamp Solutions, embodying a straightforward approach to charitable giving: support the community where you live and work. When businesses choose to process with MiCamp Solutions, they can designate a charity to receive a share of MiCamp’s profits generated from their merchant processing account.
WHAT IS ONE THING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?
There are truly no surprises with me; I am a person who values simplicity. My ideal environment involves sitting by a crackling fireplace, enjoying a cigar on my patio, and being surrounded by my loved ones. It’s these tranquil moments that bring the greatest joy and fulfillment to my life.
After graduating from Arizona State University, I worked at a bank that was based out of Kansas City, Missouri. Annually, that bank hosts an employee BBQ competition held on the grounds of the American Royal World Series of Barbecue, the largest BBQ competition in the world. Our Arizona team was invited to compete. After attending that, I became infatuated with all things smoke and meat. I came home, started practicing, and eventually started a competition BBQ team of my own.
I have competed all over the world! I mostly compete in the Southwest but have had the honor of being invited to compete in the American Royal World Series of Barbecue in Kansas City, and I have represented Arizona four times at the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue in Lynchburg, Tennessee. I have competed in Australia seven times, as well as in Mexico.
I’ve had many amazing barbecue victories, but the coolest thing is the fact that my kids got involved in the sport when they were younger. They have grown to share my cooking passion with me and have both won multiple Kids Q competitions. I am also the author of two cookbooks and hold the title of 2022 World Barbecue Champion!
Loot N’ Booty BBQ is the name of the competition team I started in 2009, and it has since evolved into a brand of its own. I began to develop a line of seasonings and sauces, and I have worked hard to grow it on an international level. Now my products are sold all over the world. They can also be ordered directly from my website ( LootNBootyBBQ.com).
Yes! I teach classes in person across the country and all over the world. They include everything from beginner backyard BBQ classes to more advanced competition-style BBQ classes. I also have online classes available through my website.
“I’ve had many amazing barbecue victories, but the coolest thing is the fact that my kids got involved in the sport when they were younger.”
WHY CARDIOLOGY?
My area of expertise is in the cardiac subspecialty dealing with irregular heartbeats called cardiac electrophysiology. I chose this field because it allows me to directly affect a patient’s quality of life and, in many cases, prolong their life. Moreover, I can touch the lives of patients with conditions ranging from atrial fibrillation, to passing out, and cardiac arrest.
WHAT SETS YOU APART?
After spending close to 15 years in academics working in big university hospitals, I opened my own private solo practice. Therefore, I can practice medicine and run a business free from large organization policies and procedures that, at times, may not be in the best interest of the patient but rather place a priority on cost-effectiveness and revenues.
YOU’VE BEEN ALL OVER THE WORLD TO LECTURE AND SPEAK. WHY DO YOU CHOOSE TO DO THAT?
I have been blessed with some of the greatest mentors and colleagues in my field. During my academic career, I was fortunate enough to gain success in research and education. This led to invitations to visit countries and speak at international conferences on the work that my colleagues and I had accomplished.
YOU HAVE A PATENT!
The patent involves a pacing technique to identify areas where the heart muscle may be scarred, resulting in a suboptimal pacemaker lead position. By using this technique, the doctor is able to avoid this area and place the lead in a position that will ultimately benefit patients suffering from heart failure.
WE HEARD YOU GET TO FLY IN F-16S …
I do! I am currently a United States Air Force reservist flight surgeon and have the honor and privilege of serving with the most fierce, brave men and women on the planet. As an immigrant, I was able to achieve success based on opportunity and freedom for which many paid a heavy price. I do not take this for granted. This is why I serve.
Colin Roberts, the owner of Pohle NV Center, asks us to forget everything we thought we knew about golf carts.
Also known as golf cars or neighborhood vehicles (hence the NV in his company’s name), his company has been offering E-Z-GO and Cushman brand golf cars for 40 years. During that time, they’ve expanded to six locations across the state. While many may picture traditional golf carts like those seen when hitting the green, there’s a lot more to these vehicles than meets the eye.
“What’s usually on the golf course are simple two-seaters, but we customize them significantly and sell many four- and six-seater golf cars. We have industrial and commercial models with utility beds, four-wheel drive, and more,” Roberts says. “These are all highly personalized, and we can make them as luxurious as you can dream up.”
Since 2017, E-Z-GO has integrated lithium batteries activated by Samsung SDI lithium technology in its golf carts.
“It’s basically a Tesla battery in a golf cart,” he explains. “They are maintenance-free and amazing technology. We tell folks, ‘Water your plants, not your golf cart.’”
He adds that neighborhood vehicles can be made street-legal in Arizona; they can be registered, titled, and plated like any other motorized vehicle. The E-Z-GO and Cushman models found at Pohle NV Center are also all made in the USA.
“Golf cars or golf carts are often also called neighborhood vehicles because they can be used as a way to connect with your neighbors in a subdivision, an RV park, a resort community, or wherever you live,” Roberts says.
While Pohle NV Center has been a mainstay in Arizona for 40 years, Roberts—equipped with an extensive engineering and business management background—purchased the company in 2019 and has since doubled the size of the business. He notes that plans to expand to other states are also in the works.
“The Scottsdale Airpark location of Pohle NV Center is a gorgeous facility that opened right before the pandemic but has since thrived thanks to community support,” he says. “We have a stellar client base and have been growing because of our amazing staff and customers.”
For those who want to get behind the wheel of the latest golf carts offered by Pohle NV Center, Roberts says that they can visit the company website, where people can order the vehicle online and have it delivered—or, of course, visit the Scottsdale showroom and take a test drive, too.
“Our neighborhood vehicle lifestyles remind me of the outdoor evening promenades in Europe—a chance for everyone to connect and spend time together,” he adds. “These little four-wheeled gems offer our communities a great deal of fun and family, and we are deeply proud to be a part of that.”

After High-Stress Combat, Many Navy SEALS Face Even Tougher Struggles Coming Home. The SEAL Future Foundation Is There to Help
Thanks to Hollywood blockbusters, popular video games, and the heroic raid that took out the world’s most wanted terrorist, the Navy SEALs have become a symbol of American pride and invincibility.
But for many members of the special operations team, leaving their Sea Air Land family to return to their homes and civilian life presents a new set of challenges. Years of training and leaving on long combat deployments have honed them to perform at a high level in dynamic and high-stress environments—but often at a cost. Transitioning SEALs can find themselves struggling to translate their military service in ways that make sense to a civilian hiring manager. Many struggle to find the same sense of purpose they felt serving in the SEAL teams.
The nonprofit SEAL Future Foundation works to ease that load.
“Outwardly, these are high-performing individuals who should have no problem with whatever comes their way, but often this is a false assumption,” says Caleb Foreman, chief marketing officer for the foundation and a former SEAL.
In the Teams, routine administrative tasks are handled so that operators can remain hyper-focused on training and maintaining their elite standards as operators. Civilian life means navigating a new set of challenges for the first time—without the support that was available throughout their service.
The average SEAL spends eight to 10 years in the SEAL Teams—and despite reaching an elite tier of the military, they have lost ground to their civilian peer group.
“It’s a shock when they’re paying for health insurance for the first time. Or doing their first resume at age 31,” Foreman says.
There are also emotional challenges. The job has trained them to master the ability to compartmentalize stress to execute a mission, and this kicks in during a stressful scenario. This often means emotions are shut down when yielded to this instinctual reaction.
“A lot of guys don’t want to bring back stress or baggage into their families and tuck it down deep inside— in their mind, protecting their loved ones from that burden,” Foreman says.
The foundation was started by Jonathan Wilson, who got a successful job in finance on Wall Street after his service. But he had trouble adjusting, and after nine months, he left that job to return to the previous life he knew.
During this time, Wilson came up with the concept of an organization specifically designed to assist the transition of Team members out of the military and into civilian life. He created a community to help them take those steps, and the SEAL Future Foundation was born.
The support system comprises programs that address health, career, education, and community aspects. This spans giving them the tools to be physically, mentally, and professionally fit for their new post-SEAL chapter.
“Our team is staffed with guys who have walked the path before them,” Foreman says.
The foundation’s impact has been strong. Foreman shares a story about how the support system stepped in and prevented a suicide with a weekend in-person intervention at a former Team member’s home.
“We’re really changing lives, and sometimes it’s literally saving lives,” Foreman says. “We are producing solutions that move the needle.
