Home Sweet Home

To me, home is family. It’s comfort. It’s where I can relax, think, and rest. It’s the space that I created for myself and family, so it is an expression of both who I am and my love.

What does your home mean to you?

If you’re looking for inspiration to turn your house into a home, check out our stories throughout the issue, which showcase decor to new space additions to backyard renovations.

Of course, there’s also our cover star, pop icon Taylor Dayne, who will be coming to spend time in our home city so that she can be part of Gateway Celebrity Fight Night. I had the chance to speak with her about the event, her recent health scare, and what she likes about Scottsdale.

How lucky are we that we get to share our home city with her?

As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you—in your city, neighborhood, and, most of all, your home.

Thank you for letting us be part of it.

Yours,

Ahhh ... springtime!

March 20th marks the first day of spring, and let me say … it’s my FAVORITE time of year! Perfect temperatures, sunshine, fresh air, colorful flowers, birds chirping, bees buzzing, endless beauty around us, and all of that puts us in grateful mindsets of where we get to call home!

Arizona's springtime weather is one of the best in the world. How lucky are we to live where we do? This is the time to cease each day, get out there, and enjoy the amazing things our home has to offer. There are endless activities, events like spring training, hiking, biking, running, and walking trails to explore. Of course, one thing we are not short of is the natural beauty around us.

IDEAS:

• Create a picnic at your favorite park with your best friend.

• Hike a trail you haven’t tried yet.

• Bike down the Scottsdale Greenbelt.

• Try one of the many new restaurants and sit on a comfy patio while eating tasty bites.

• Attend a spring training game.

• Go to one of our nearby lakes and enjoy the water.

• Take a day trip to beautiful Sedona, Prescott, or Flagstaff.

• Go on a wine tour in one of our Arizona wineries.

TAYLOR DAYNE

Singer, songwriter, and actress Taylor Dayne rose to fame in the late 1980s with her debut single “Tell It to My Heart.” Since then, the pop icon has been busy, with six more top-10 singles, two Grammy Award nominations, an American Music Award, and multiple other awards. Oh, and parts in movies and television shows such as “Love Affair,” “Fool’s Paradise,” and “Rude Awakening.” She also performed as Popcorn on Season 4 of “The Masked Singer.”

Next month Dayne will be at it again, performing in Scottsdale at Gateway Celebrity Fight Night, a Gateway for Cancer Research Gala. The celebrity-studded, red carpet event features a performance lineup created exclusively by Grammy Award-winning producer David Foster, the event’s musical director for 22 years.

A glamorous affair, Gateway Celebrity Fight Night unites celebrities, artists, actors, and individuals from all walks of life in the fight against cancer—a cause that’s close to Dayne’s heart. Last year, the pop icon was diagnosed with stage 1 colon cancer. She is now cancer-free.

The gala, along with its impressive auction, helps fund early-phase clinical cancer research through Gateway for Cancer Research (GatewayCR.org ).

We sat down to talk with Dayne about the event, her career, her health, and one thing you probably don’t know about her.

ON PERFORMING AT GATEWAY CELEBRITY FIGHT NIGHT, HER HEALTH SCARE, AND WHAT YOU PROBABLY DON’T KNOW ABOUT HER

WAS THERE A SPECIFIC MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU KNEW YOU WANTED TO BE A PROFESSIONAL SINGER? OR IF NOT, WHAT DREW YOU TO THE INDUSTRY?

When I was about 4 or 5 years old, my dad gave me a Sony transistor radio. The first song I heard was on WABC radio: “My Cherie Amour” by Stevie Wonder. I had never heard a voice more beautiful. I knew then and there I wanted to be a star and sound like the music coming from the box.

DID YOU GROW UP SINGING ALL THE TIME AND PERFORMING AS A CHILD?

I was influenced at a very early age by the radio and the music playing around me. I grew up in an apartment complex, so music played through the building and in and out of everybody’s windows. Many different styles and genres, with only a few FM stations. The teenagers who were getting into rock and pop, to musicals and classical music that my parents loved, to the jukebox in the luncheonette across the street playing “Radar Love.”

OF ALL YOUR SONGS, DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE?

Well yes, I have favorites of my own to perform live. Definitely “Shelter” and “Love Will Lead.” I love performing “Shelter” for its raw fun and tempo, and “Love Will Lead” because it moves people in such a way. I’m always so invested in the performance of that song.

YOU’RE CURRENTLY TOURING. DO YOU LIKE BEING ON THE ROAD?

Being on the road after so many years with developed friendships and special spots I have journeyed to as a guest has many advantages. It also can be very lonely.

YOU’VE ALSO BEEN ON TV AND IN NUMEROUS MOVIES. DO YOU ENJOY ACTING AS MUCH AS SINGING?

I love acting! Being part of a set and crew working on a project. It’s not a muscle I flex as much.

CAN WE TALK ABOUT YOUR RECENT HEALTH SCARE? WHAT HAPPENED?

What a crazy turn my health took in mid-2022. I was diagnosed with stage 1 colon cancer. It was very sudden. I went in for treatment and surgery immediately.

WE’RE SO GLAD YOU ARE DOING WELL NOW! YOU WILL BE IN SCOTTSDALE NEXT MONTH FOR GATEWAY CELEBRITY FIGHT NIGHT, WHICH RAISES MONEY TO FIGHT ALL CANCERS. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE PART OF—HOPEFULLY—SOLUTIONS?

I love Scottsdale, and I'm so excited to be a part of the incredible Gateway Celebrity Fight Night as an artist and as a person so personally affected by cancer.

WHY ARE EVENTS LIKE THIS SO IMPORTANT?

It brings a community together, and for those not knowledgeable of the charity or cause, it educates while it entertains.

DO YOU SEE YOURSELF BECOMING AN ADVOCATE AT ALL?

I feel like I just went through something very deep and very personal. I’m forever grateful I came out on the healthy living side of this disease. If I can help anyone do the same, I’m there.

HAVE YOU BEEN TO SCOTTSDALE BEFORE? IF SO, ANY FAVORITE PLACES?

I certainly have been to Scottsdale! Hiking, getting spa treatments at The Phoenician, having a great meal at any of the fine restaurants in town.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT PERFORMING, YOU LIKE TO … I stay physical, doing more outdoor activities, home cooking, hiking, working out with a trainer, and seeing friends.

WHAT’S ONE THING FANS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I can cook a great Italian sauce!

Designing a Dream Space

Minimal Living Concepts Offers a New Way to Buy and Build Additional Space for Your Home

If home is where the heart is, then to entrepreneurs Zander Diamont and Jared Amzallag, Scottsdale is home. As Los Angeles transplants, this dynamic duo saw a unique real estate opportunity and made the most out of it.

In 2020, when they noticed that many people didn’t have a distraction-free space from which to work from home, they began to brainstorm solutions. Eventually, they moved from L.A. to Scottsdale to found Minimal Living Concepts, a company that designs and builds modern small homes and additions for Valleybased homes.

“Jared and I had been researching luxury home remodeling opportunities in L.A. when he started taking regular trips to Scottsdale to visit family,” says Diamont.

“I saw incredible opportunity in the Valley,” Amzallag adds. “Cranes were in the air, construction hadn’t slowed down, and we could do a lot more with a $2 million investment in Arizona than we could in Los Angeles.”

Fast-forward to today, and Minimal Living Concepts, headquartered in Scottsdale, has 10 employees and has built and sold 60 accessory-dwelling units in Arizona.

“We’ve taken a process that is typically expensive, complicated, and disconnected, and we’ve simplified

it,” Diamont explains. “We offer a turnkey experience that makes it easy for customers to choose the product they want, make a few personalized choices, then place their order.”

Currently, five concepts are available to customers: the Flex (429 square feet), Live (522 square feet), Live+ (750 square feet), Dwell (1,044 square feet), and Resi (1,600 square feet). Prices range from $150,000 to $418,000, depending on the model and add-ons.

“We provide transparent pricing and take care of everything end to end,” Amzallag adds. “Our clients know they are getting a beautiful, modern guest house at a great price, and the experience is seamless.”

Currently, the company is focused on serving the Greater Phoenix area.

“The majority of our clients are using our units for multi-generational living, primarily for having grandma and grandpa live on the property in their own space, instead of moving them to a senior living center,” Diamont explains. “It’s a beautiful thing to see, and a great long-term investment, as well. We also have clients who want a separate space for their teens to hang out or need a home office, a pool house, guest house, or in some cases, a ‘man cave’ or ‘she shed’ where they can easily get away to enjoy some solo time.”

The process to build the new space is meant to be as seamless as possible.

“Once a client completes their feasibility study and says ‘yes,’ we handle it all,” Diamont says. “This includes the site plan,

grading and drainage plan, architectural documentation, and structural engineering. We carry the project through the entire permitting process, then see the project through construction. We keep our clients up to speed from inception to completion.”

Construction timelines vary, but most dwellings are completed within five to seven months.

“Customers who have been burned by bad construction and remodeling experiences often think that’s just the way things have to be,” Diamont adds. “It’s extremely rewarding to show them our revolutionary new way of simplifying the entire experience. We’ve taken our marketing and real estate backgrounds and combined them with the right technology to make a once-complicated process simple and enjoyable.”

While Minimal Living Concepts builds smaller abodes now, looking to the future, that won’t always be the case.

“It’s exciting to be in this space right now, and we have big plans for growth in 2023 and 2024,” Amzallag says. “We will soon be introducing new product designs, and later this year, we will be expanding into full-scale homes. We are dedicated to continual improvement and ready to scale our business to serve even more clients.”

“We are so glad we took the leap and left L.A. when we did,” Diamont says. “Scottsdale is the perfect spot for us to be launching and growing Minimal Living Concepts.” MinimalLivingConcepts.com

PITCH PIZZA HAS A HOME RUN ON ITS HANDS WITH A NEW LOCATION AND A GROWING BRAND

When it first opened in Omaha, Nebraska, in 2009, Pitch Pizza offered a great pizza spot with a small menu of handmade meatballs and salads.

And today, with two locations in Omaha, a popular outpost in South Scottsdale, and a newly opened 6,000-square-foot restaurant in the Cavasson mixed-use building on Hayden Road, all of those menu items are still great—but the brand is so much more.

“Our evolution into a culinary destination is 100% thanks to our team culture, community partners, and talented kitchen squad led by our longtime chef Manny ‘Chef MC’ Carino,” says Dean Leisman, chief executive officer and chief operating officer of Pitch.

The initial Scottsdale restaurant, located in The Quad on 63rd Street and Thomas, opened in 2017. It offers a mix of masculine architectural elements, including metal, wood, and cement, in a 4,000-square-foot space, with an expansive patio, exposed ductwork, and a partially exposed kitchen by design.

The locale wowed guests from day one with its scratch-made recipes, extensive bourbon and

EPICUREAN EVOLUTION

tequila selections, and a “come as you are, leave as a friend” approach to service.

“Over time, we added new elements, notably cocktail dinners, brunch, and seasonal menu items, eventually working with a winemaker to create our own proprietary wine, as well,” says Leisman, adding that Pitch makes its signature cocktails from its private barrels of select spirits, offers specials on said spirits via its Pitch Booze Bank daily, and just launched its fifth vintage of wine. Called No Offense, the wine was released in late 2022 in partnership with a Napa winemaker. Primarily a Zinfandel but with nuanced levels of Petit Syrah and Port, the wine is so popular that the team both retails it and offers it in-restaurant.

The move to expand to North Scottsdale was not a fluke, as plans for a second restaurant were in place for a while, but it happened through an unexpected set of circumstances.

“Last year during WM Phoenix Open week, a group came into our Quad location for drinks and dinner,” says Leisman, who was there that night and became fast friends with them.

The next day, Leisman got a call from his broker. It turns out, Pitch’s broker walked with the broker for Nationwide nearly daily, and during their morning constitutional, the Nationwide broker randomly asked if he knew anything about Pitch.

“Apparently, we made quite the positive impact on them, and within 12 hours, the chairman for Nationwide hopped on a plane from Ohio to meet me and discuss opening in their planned and highly touted Cavasson center,” says Leisman. “Ten months later, we opened our doors there.”

The North Scottsdale location is almost identical to the Quad restaurant, with a few significant differences.  While the space is the same

combination of metal, wood, and cement, it has a 100% exposed kitchen, which has long been on Chef MC’s “want” list. In addition, the building faces east to allow for unobscured views of the McDowell Mountains. And finally, at 6,000 square feet, the restaurant is a third larger than its sister property, allowing for two breathtaking patio spaces.

At brunch, expect a laundry list of Chef MC’s personal favorite morning dishes and breakfast pizzas, including “Bacon Me Crazy Pizza” with chorizo gravy and cherry pepper aioli. There are also skillets, sweets, and traditional morning staples.

At lunch and dinner, the menu starts with mixand-match tapas, as well as ample appetizers and charcuterie boards, before moving into its more than 15 pizzas, handmade pastas, a laundry list of salads and sandwiches, and perfectly plated entrees that rival those in the top fine-dining destinations in Arizona. To finish, do not miss the red velvet cake, cowboy ice cream infused with bourbon or the seasonal cobbler.

“No matter which location you visit and what day of the week, Pitch makes everyone its VIPitches,” says Leisman.

I n the coming months, Pitch will launch a pizza kit to-go program to raise money for community partners.

MAKER’S STUDIO | SHOPPING When a Plan to Get Some R&R Evolves Into a New Business ... Call it R&R 36

A NEW FIT

The plan was to enjoy some rest and relaxation after selling the successful clothing company they had spent decades building.

So, when Andi Rosenstein launched R&R Surplus clothing line with her husband, Steve, it was more than just a clever name reflecting the couple’s first initials of their last name.

“We had no intention of going back into designing, but ...,” Andi says.

When the Rosensteins purchased the building that would become The Duce— the popular Downtown Phoenix entertainment venue and night hot spot in a historic Prohibition-era warehouse—in 2007, they did it as a project to distract them from their former career.

At the time, they had just sold Fitigues, the clothing brand they started in 1988 in their native Chicago. They were living in Scottsdale by then, and The Duce was a way to channel their energy while decompressing.

As they worked on making The Duce bar- and restaurant-ready, they began selling repurposed and vintage clothing from the 1960s inside the building. They enlisted someone to hand-embroider pieces and sold athletic college-style sweatshirts. They even sold surplus vintage leather by the pound to walk-ins.

“We had an old vintage scale and put it up there, weighed it, and sold it,” Andi recalls.

And it was there in that old warehouse that anchored what was once the Phoenix produce district—hence the vintage scale the Rosensteins inherited—that R&R Surplus was born.

In 2010, The Duce was up and running, but the clothing line had gained its own following. A year later, R&R released its non-vintage line of original pieces for women and men. Today, R&R has boutiques at The Phoenician resort and in Laguna Beach.

R&R’s clothing is comfortable, yet dressy enough to go from the gym to errand shopping to lunch with friends. Andi designs the women’s collection, and her son Luke (who is also the model on the company’s website) does the men’s.

The operation is a family business, with Andi’s other son Jake working with The Duce.

“That’s the biggest blessing of all— getting to work with my boys every day,” Andi says. “It’s a pretty amazing part of life for me right now. A pinch-me kind of situation.”

Backyard Bliss

FROM ARTIFICIAL TURF TO AN ENTIRE BACKYARD DESIGN AND INSTALL, TURF MONSTERS CREATES STUNNING SPACES

It was 2016, and Mike Freeland had a goal—he wanted to provide high-quality landscaping created with the highest-quality materials and installation, but that was still competitively priced.

Fast-forward to 2023, and Freeland has far exceeded his goals for both himself and his clients.

Turf Monsters—the company that he launched that year—is a popular, in-demand one-stop shop for all landscaping needs, including pavers and patios, putting greens, fire pits and grills, pergolas, landscape lighting, trees and plants, and of course, artificial turf, which is available at wholesale pricing.

OUTDOOR LIVING | HOME + DESIGN
42

“We’re here for the customer,” Freeland says of his full-service landscaping business model.

“We genuinely care as a company. Our goal is to take someone’s space and make it useable, taking it from something they don’t even want to see to something they want to spend time in.”

Providing an excellent customer experience includes treating customers right and offering top-quality products they can depend on. Turf Monsters installs high-quality, American-made Tiger Turf or Everlast, which offers long-term durability and, with its mixture of olive green and field turf fibers, looks and feels similar to living grass.

The TigerCool option is extremely pet-friendly for those with pets, and won’t tear or damage with digging, chewing, or clawing. It’s scientifically proven to stay cooler, is non-toxic, allergen-free, and easy to rinse.

And while customers may choose to hose down a pet area if they want, the overall water savings of having artificial turf—whether standard turf or petfriendly turf—is significant, making it a perfect ecofriendly(nottomentionmaintenance-free!)option.

No matter what product is installed, Turf Monstersprovidesa10-yearwarrantyoneverything it sells, guaranteeing that nothing will fade or have any issues.

Of his company and success, Freeland says, “I love meeting new people, the relationships that are built, making people happy, doing what we say we’re going to do, and being a good contractor. That’s what we pride ourselves on and what we do.”

Adding another way to serve his customers, in 2021, Freeland opened a wholesale warehouse and showroom.

“We did that because we can buy in bulk,” he explains, “and so we can store turf in large amounts, and then we can pass those savings on to our customers. People can then come to our showroom and see what we have.”

Regarding the rest of the backyard landscaping, Turf Monsters' one-stop shop also includes custom options for everything from the grills to pergolas, and everything in between.

“We just genuinely care about our customers and want to ensure a positive experience. And pricewise, forwhatweoffer,Idon’tthinkanyonecanbeat us in town in regard to our quality and installation.” TurfMonstersAZ.com

2023 ACURA INTEGRA A-SPEC

THIS PREMIUM SPORT

COMPACT MAKES LUXURY FUN

The 2023 Acura Integra A-Spec with Technology is a premium compact that reflects the fun-to-drive origins of earlier Integra models. But this is not the Integra of the 1990s.

A SPORTY DESIGN

The rear design is a nod to previous Integra models—dramatically sloping roofline, upswept deckled, sporty lip spoiler, and wide, single-piece taillights. In the front, it is the first vehicle in the Acura lineup to sport the new frameless Diamond Pentagon grille with a diamond pattern.

To see and be seen on the highway isn't a problem with the Acura-signature lighting that includes four-element JewelEye LED headlights and Chicane LED daytime running lights and taillights. A rear fascia with dual exhaust finishers

takes this Integra up a notch on the sporty scale. It sports 18-inch alloy wheels and LED fog lights exclusive to the A-SPEC package.

Other features include a power moonroof with a tilt feature, a keyless access system with smart entry, and heated power door mirrors with turn indicators.

UNDER THE HOOD

The 2023 Integra A-Spec features a 200 horsepower, 1.5-liter VTEC turbo engine and sport-tuned chassis. It comes with a 6-speed manual transmission, which makes for an exhilarating driving experience.

CLIMB INSIDE

The 5-door lift back offers the best of both worlds: A large flexible cargo area and rear seat legroom you'd expect in a sedan with the sleek coupe-like profile you love in a sports car.

Acura created a driver-focused interior with a heated 12-way powered driver's seat and a 4-way heated front passenger seat. Integra A-Spec with Tech package features a 10.2-inch Acura Precision Cockpit digital gauge display and a 9-inch color touchscreen compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Stay connected on the go with a wireless smartphone charger, a 530-watt 16-speaker ELS STUDIO 3D premium audio system, four USB ports, and AcuraLink communication system. Safety is at the forefront of the Integra A-Spec with a Head-Up Display, front and rear parking sensors, and AcuraWatch functions displaying vehicle information.

IMPACTFUL DESIGN

Classically stylish, family-friendly, soothing, modern, and inviting are just some of the hallmarks of

1/

The best way to showcase incredible furniture is by styling it with just as amazing pieces, as illustrated in this home office. The gorgeous zigzag carvings in this pine desk incorporate textural appeal. The drawers allow for storage space so its beauty can be complemented with accessories, rather than being overshadowed by typical office clutter. The bookshelves are thoughtfully enhanced with items that provide purpose and aesthetic allure, creating an artistic gallery for the eye.

2/

Hallways are often overlooked but can serve as impactful and useful niches within a home.

This custom, hand-carved console allows for an additional source of needed light and a splash of color at the end of a corridor. Being able to provide both purpose and style in a design is a major win.

3/

This ultra-inviting kitchen is the epitome of elegance and charm. The light cabinets and white island are a striking contrast to the dark wood and oversized iron pendants, creating a rich aesthetic. The durable rope counter stools lend to the home’s organic and welcoming feel, and are both kid-friendly for family dinners or adult-ready for gathering with a cocktail.
