Get Moving!
It is already June again. I feel as if I just finished writing last year’s Men’s Issue message. Oh well, another year has passed, so let’s take stock and revisit the same theme. That being, “Hey guys, get off your butt and get moving!”
How you do that is up to you. It is best if you have a plan and some specific goals. The planning starts when you confront yourself and come face to face with what needs to be done. Get healthier, enjoy life more because you feel better living it and then decide where you want to be at each stage of the process. Done well, the process may never end because your activity and your goals will change as you get older and you’ll continue to feel better doing it.
I will start by using myself as an example. By mid-2021 I was a “train wreck.” Illness and medication needed to overcome the illness added 25 pounds to a tall narrow body. Most of it right in the middle. However, it does not require an illness to pack on weight in your middle. Diet, decreased testosterone and a sedentary lifestyle are often the real causes. The big belly on middle age or older guys is caused by visceral fat. It’s easy to gain and very hard to lose. What it does to your body causes serious illnesses and decreases the quality of your life.
Your goals should be a combination of weight loss and muscle gain. One without the other is not enough. Go to the gym. Put your male ego on a shelf and start “slow and low” and build up from there. Combine aerobic and resistance training. Do it yourself or sign up with a good, credentialed trainer. Change your diet. Consume less food and eat less fat. You do not need to become a vegetarian or vegan, just eat better and healthier.
I recently looked at some photos from my granddaughter’s high school graduation and her 17th birthday. Gads!! Was that me? Three years later I look like me again. I may be 3 years older, but I just removed about 10 years, so I am living on “house money” and way ahead of the game. You can too!

Have you heard the term “Silver Tsunami” getting tossed around recently? If so, here’s what you really need to know. That phrase refers to the idea that a lot of baby boomers are going to move or downsize all at once. And the fear is that a sudden influx of homes for sale would have a big impact on housing. That’s because it would create a whole lot more competition for smaller homes and would throw off the balance of supply and demand, which ultimately would impact home prices.
But here’s the thing. There are a couple of faults in that logic. Let’s break them down and put your mind at ease.
For starters, plenty of baby boomers don’t plan on moving at all. A study from the AARP says more than half of adults aged 65 and older want to stay in their homes and not move as they age (see graph below):
Source: AARP
While it’s true circumstances may change and some people who don’t plan to move (the red in the chart above) may realize they need to down the road, the vast majority are counting on aging in place.
As for those who stay put, they’ll likely modify their homes as their needs change over time. And when updating their existing home won’t work, some will buy a second home and keep their original one as an investment to fuel generational wealth for their loved ones. As an article from Inman explains:
While not all baby boomers are looking to sell their homes and move – the ones who do won’t all do it at the same time. Instead, it’ll happen slowly over many years. As Freddie Mac says:
As Mark Fleming, Chief Economist at First American, says:
If you’re stressed about a Silver Tsunami shaking the housing market overnight, don’t be. Baby boomers will move slowly over a much longer period of time.
If you are thinking about making a move, please call me for a free no obligation consultation to help you with your next chapter.

The Desirability of Emotionally Intelligent Men
ARTICLE BY DEBRA THOMAS
The desirability of emotionally intelligent men is evident in both personal and professional contexts. On a personal level, they are capable of forming deeper connections, maintaining stronger relationships and providing support that is both empathetic and practical. Professionally, emotionally intelligent men are valued for their ability to manage stress, inspire and lead teams effectively, and handle conflicts with a level of sensitivity that preserves team dynamics.
Let’s briefly explore the importance of emotional intelligence in men, how it has transitioned from traditional norms, the impact it has on purpose and core values, and its growing desirability in today's society.
TRADITIONAL VS. CONTEMPORARY EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Traditionally, emotional intelligence in men has been largely characterized by unhealthy emotional restraint. Societal expectations often discouraged men from expressing vulnerability or emotional complexity, pushing them to adopt a facade of toughness and emotional invulnerability. This approach to emotional wellness suppresses genuine emotional expression and can contribute to issues like stress, depression, and a lack of fulfillment.
In contrast, contemporary perspectives on emotional wellness recognize the importance of emotional intelligence as a fundamental aspect of health and happiness. This shift, facilitated by a broader cultural acceptance of mental health discussions, promotes a more holistic approach to wellness that includes emotional, mental and even physical health. Today, being emotionally intelligent is seen as a strength that enhances one's quality of life and relationships.
THE ROLE OF PURPOSE IN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
For men, having a clear sense of purpose provides a context for setting personal goals and values, which in turn shapes how men perceive and react to their emotions. Emotionally
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE | HEALTH + WELLNESS 18
intelligent men use their purpose as a guide to navigate their responses to life’s challenges, helping to align their actions with their deeper values and beliefs. Congruence here fosters authenticity, a critical aspect of emotional intelligence.
THE INFLUENCE OF CORE VALUES
Emotionally intelligent men have identified intrinsic core values which drive strong character attributes such as integrity, respect and empathy. For emotionally intelligent men, their values are not abstract ideals but practical attributes demonstrated in daily interactions and decisions. When behaviors align with their values, men are often seen as more reliable and trustworthy. By living these core values, emotionally intelligent men inspire others.
STRATEGIES FOR ENHANCING MEN’S EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND WELLNESS
Improving emotional intelligence and well-being among men requires deliberate strategies. Education and awareness are the first steps; incorporating emotional intelligence training and mentoring into the home, schools and professional training can provide men with the tools needed to develop these skills throughout life. Other strategies include the following:
1. Encouraging Open Conversations
By talking openly about emotions, struggles and vulnerabilities, men can break down the barriers of isolation that many feel. Workplaces, schools and social circles that encourage open dialogue can be pivotal in changing perceptions.
2. Building Supportive Networks
Men benefit greatly from having strong, supportive networks whether through friendships, professional associations or online communities. These networks provide emotional support, practical help and a sense of belonging, all of which are vital for mental health.
3. Professional Help and Therapy
Therapy should be viewed as a tool for strength, not a sign of weakness. Professional counseling offers a safe space for men to explore their emotions and develop strategies to manage them effectively. Fortunately, more men are now seeking therapy, and this trend needs continued encouragement.
“For men, having a clear sense of purpose provides a context for setting personal goals and values, which in turn shapes how men perceive and react to their emotions.”

“Whether it’s learning a new skill, engaging in creative pursuits or reading, continuous personal growth is essential for emotional wellness.”
4. Mindfulness and Mental Fitness
Mindfulness practices such as meditation, yoga and tai chi can significantly improve mental health by reducing stress and enhancing self-awareness. Regular physical exercise is also crucial as it not only strengthens the body but also releases endorphins, improving mood and reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.
5. Lifelong Learning and Personal Development
Engaging in lifelong learning and personal development activities can boost self-esteem and provide men with a sense of achievement and fulfillment. Whether it’s learning a new skill, engaging in creative pursuits or reading, continuous personal growth is essential for emotional wellness.
LOOKING FORWARD
The path to emotional wellness for men is not just about changing individual behaviors but also about transforming societal attitudes toward male vulnerability and mental health. By embracing core values and finding a purposeful direction, men can significantly enhance their emotional and overall well-being. Encouraging open discussions about mental health, promoting healthy lifestyle choices and providing support networks are essential steps in this journey toward a more emotionally well society for men.

THE PAUL GRAY PC MUSEUM: A Father’s Day Tribute
Not many people can claim their father has a museum named after him, but longtime Newbury Park resident Terri Childs can.
The Paul Gray Personal Computing Museum, located on the campus of Claremont Graduate University, was established to honor her father’s legacy.
In 1983, after holding professorships at universities, including Stanford and USC, Dr. Gray began an 18-year career teaching at CGU, where he founded the Center for Information Systems and Technology.
“Simply put, using cutting-edge technical training, students learn to manage data to help solve problems in business, health, education and government,” explains Childs, who has lived in the area with her husband and family for 22 years.
Dr. Gray, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 81, was a beloved educator and colleague. He continues to be celebrated for his innovative research and approach to teaching.
When he retired in 2001, Lorne Olfman, a professor in his department, surprised Gray at his farewell party with

an announcement he had raised funds for a museum to be named after him.
“Dad was thrilled and decided to curate the museum himself,” recalls Childs, adding that her father’s collection of personal computers became the core of the museum.
When mainframe computers transitioned to PCs, Gray became an avid collector.
“He knew in a fast-moving field, things change, and he wanted to preserve a moment in time,” she says.
Childs remembers her father had understood from the start the impact personal computing would have on people’s lives.
“And I think he felt fortunate to live in a time when computers went from being accessible to only a select few to becoming available to everyone.”
The museum opened in 2002 and consists of six exhibits, each featuring computers and highlighting important themes, such as The Computer Lifestyle, Portability and IBM versus Apple. Visitors can track the early development of personal computing from the Data Products PortaCom (1971), the oldest
machine in the museum’s ever-growing collection, to the IBM Thinkpad (1994).
These days with a smartphone, we can hold a computer in the palm of our hand. So it is astonishing to see the 26-pound, suitcase-sized Osborne I (1981), the first “luggable” computer, as it was then known.
The museum’s artifacts underscore just how quickly technology has evolved.
The museum also honors Gray’s life’s work as an educator by sharing knowledge with people of all
ages through its educational programs. Their mission is to inspire creativity and innovation through engagement with technology, as well as to examine how computers affect our lives.
Allison Koehler, the museum’s former executive director, developed a curriculum based on the museum’s current exhibits that teaches young students the history of PCs. The River Oaks Academy in Thousand Oaks will be offering the course over Zoom to middle school students as an extracurricular option this spring.
“Considering how computers permeate our daily lives, it’s important to learn about their origins,” notes Childs, ROA board president. “Understanding the past provides a valuable perspective that might help solve current and future problems.”
The museum also hosts an online speakers series, Decoding the Past, where experts discuss the past and future of technology and society. Additionally, the museum has fostered interdisciplinary partnerships across Claremont Graduate University and with other organizations.
“Dad often worked on projects with professors in other departments,” Childs says. “His book, What They Didn’t Teach You in Graduate School: 299 Helpful Hints for Success in Your Academic Career, was cowritten with David Drew, a professor of education.”
ORIGINS
Born December 8, 1930, in Vienna, Austria, Gray enjoyed an idyllic childhood until the Nazis took control of Austria in 1938. The family immigrated to America in 1939, settling in New York City.
A bright student, Gray graduated high school early and received his bachelor’s degree in math at

NYU at 19. He met his future wife, NYU co-ed Muriel Blynn, that same year; they were married just shy of 60 years.
Gray obtained master’s degrees in math and electrical engineering, and his PhD from Stanford University in operations research. His long-standing interest in computation was sparked by a class in numerical analysis at NYU.
Throughout his academic career, Gray worked with many pioneers of technology, including Doug Englebart, who invented the computer mouse.
“Dad told the story of Englebart calling him and other colleagues to his office to see his new, yet-unnamed invention, which could move a dot on the screen. They all said, ‘Doug that’s great, but what could possibly be the application for this?’” laughs Childs.
Not surprisingly, her father’s interest in computing influenced her career path.
“After graduate school, I found my niche—technology marketing and public relations.”
Tragically, Paul Gray died from injuries sustained from a car crash caused by a driver on her cell phone. His wife, who was seriously injured, passed away 4 years later.
“Understanding the past provides a valuable perspective that might help solve current and future problems.”
Childs describes her father as someone who believed strongly in himself. His enthusiasm for everything he did was infectious.
“He was an engineer in the optimistic American tradition of the 50s,” she notes. “American technology was world-class and the future was bright.”
Childs remembers the tributes to her father upon his retirement about how he inspired and enriched his students’ and colleagues’ lives. One student summed up best what Gray meant to them all.
“He quoted a verse from Sanskrit Vedic literature: The gift of knowledge is the greatest gift.”

The Meadowglade Expands Offerings
ARTICLE BY TRACY MARCYNZSYN
MENTAL WELLBEING | HEALTH + WELLNESS 28
Community members, staff and clients gathered at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in April to celebrate The Meadowglade’s expansion to a new outpatient treatment facility in Moorpark.
The new facility, conveniently located by the 118 and 23 freeways with ample free parking, allows The Meadowglade to increase its treatment offerings and serve more clients through its full- and half-day outpatient programs.
“The new facility is spacious and welcoming, and it doubles the size of our outpatient center,” says Nariné Babikian, Executive Director of The Meadowglade. “Upgraded in every possible way,” the larger facility includes a sit-down kitchen, four group therapy and three individual therapy rooms, a reception and check-in area, group meeting rooms with teleconferencing capabilities, client lockers and staff offices.
“With this new huge, open space, we’ve added additional treatment modalities, including Saturday programming like tai chi, beat-based movement, yoga and sound baths,” says Nariné. “We are committed to providing clients with a variety of modalities to help them learn diverse coping strategies,” she adds.
With 2 decades of experience in healthcare, Nariné firmly believes that mental health is the cornerstone of overall well-being. She is committed to being part of a company where she can give back to the community and witness the transformative impact that valuable changes in mental health services can bring. Nariné understands that prioritizing mental health not only improves individual lives but also enhances community resilience and societal well-being.
Nariné is eager to begin networking in Moorpark and Ventura County, connecting with individuals from diverse backgrounds to ensure they are informed about the vital work being done within the community. With her expertise and dedication, she believes that their presence is crucial now more than ever. Recognizing the prevalence of mental health issues and actively working to address them allows for the promotion of early intervention, the destigmatization of seeking help, and the improvement of access to mental health services. This not only enhances individuals' quality of life and resilience but also strengthens communities and society, fostering a more inclusive, supportive and thriving environment where everyone can live fulfilling lives.
Top of Form
At The Meadowglade, a personalized, evidence-based approach is adopted, tailored to individual needs while
recognizing the unique strengths of each person. Their modalities encompass a diverse range of therapeutic methods designed to foster holistic healing and longterm wellness. Emphasizing a variety of modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Anger Reduction Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and EMDR Psychotherapy, alongside creative interventions such as music, art, and group therapy, the aim is to equip clients with lifelong skills.
Treatment Options
The Meadowglade’s three service options are designed to meet clients wherever they are:
1. The Cottage is a secluded 6-bed residential treatment facility with 24-hour support.
2. The Meadowglade’s retreat-like 14-bed residential hilltop house, surrounded by open space and fruit orchards, includes in-home scheduled activities and programs, such as cooking, gardening and career services. Clients are also transported to the outpatient treatment center for a full day of programming.
3. The Outpatient Treatment Center includes full- and half-day programming incorporating a variety of healing modalities.
The full program typically takes clients about 90 days— 30 days in each stage or 45 days in two stages—to complete.
“Everybody is here for a certain amount of time of time,” says Nariné, noting that each person is unique. “We want them to learn from us and take what they’ve learned out in their world. We want to be a part of their journey.”
With an estimated 1 in 5 Americans experiencing mental health issues annually, the importance of addressing these conditions cannot be overstated.
“Our mission is to improve the lives of our clients by providing holistic and evidenced-based services that promote and empower personal growth by inspiring hope through our unwavering commitment to compassionate client-centered care,” says Christina Hesselbrock, MSW, LCSW, Clinical Director at The Meadowglade.
The Meadowglade is part of Centered Health, a network of distinguished mental health treatment centers dedicated to providing transformative care and support to teens, adults and families.

““We surpassed 1 million diapers (double that in wipes) in August 2023.”
Conejo Community Outreach epitomizes the caring spirit and generosity of area residents. Founded in 2015 by a few local ladies, the nonprofit provides more than 25,000 diapers every month to local families in need.
“We surpassed 1 million diapers (double that in wipes) in August 2023,” says Board Vice President Jess Weihe.
The 100% volunteer-run board is headed by Board President Andrea Yusim, whose desire to serve families in need with a Thanksgiving event sparked the idea for the nonprofit. Joining with local moms with online platforms—Kinsie Flame (Moms of Conejo Valley) and Jess (Anonymous Mommy), as well as Rena Robles—the group formed the nonprofit, Conejo Community Outreach, and hosted annual Thanksgiving events through 2020.
“In 2018, we launched the diaper bank after wanting to provide a year-round service and

Perfecting Your Golf Swing
ARTICLE BY DANIEL SCHOWENGERDT
Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
ATHLETE LIFE | LIFE + CULTURE 60
Get fit for equipment.
01.
If you are buying clubs off the rack, you aren’t giving yourself the best chance for success. Golf technology is evolving every year, and although you don’t need to buy a new driver each year, if you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip. The clubs don’t swing themselves, so don’t neglect instruction and practice, but getting the right equipment is a vital piece of the puzzle.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.

02.
Get good golf instruction, REGULARLY.
We’ve all heard someone say, “I should get a lesson sometime.” To be effective, you need regular lessons from a PGA certified pro, not just one lesson. Getting quality instruction from the same instructor can turn slices into draws and give you the confidence to play with anyone on any course. Years ago, golf instructors started instruction with chipping and putting and then graduated to the driver. Now, instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first. My friend regularly outdrives me by 50 yards, but my ball is in the hole first most of the time because of my training and practice on the short game.
03.
Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:
Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz
Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs
Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
04.
Practice your short game every day.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.

USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.
A good Barbeque sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.
SOMETHING SWEET
This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.
SOMETHING TANGY
Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.
SOMETHING SPICY
This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.
SOMETHING LIQUID
It can be beer, water, chicken soda, stock, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.
SOMETHING TOMATO
You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.
THE SPICE COMBINATION
This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.
HOMEMADE
BBQ SAUCE
INGREDIENTS
• 2 cups ketchup
• 1 cup water
• 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
• 5 tablespoons brown sugar
• 5 tablespoons sugar
• 1/2 tablespoon black pepper
• 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
• 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
DIRECTIONS
In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 15 minutes.

SPECIAL MEN IN MY LIFE
First, there’s my dad. I loved having a dad with whom I could do no wrong and was cherished by—I was truly a daddy’s girl; he was always there for me.
I’m also so grateful for having an incredible husband that is very similar to my dad and is like a MacGyver who can fix anything and who also supports me in everything I do.
I'm blessed to have two sons who have completely different personalities and are amazing in every way. One of my sons and his wife just gave us another granddaughter, which makes two for us! As this is their first child, I find it very special and beautiful to watch him being a dad.
I also have three grandsons who are so smart and loving as they are finding their way in life with school, sports and their interests; I love my little men and watching them grow up.
I am so blessed to have one son in law and another almost son in law who are completely different but are both incredible father figures to my grandchildren. I feel truly blessed to have my three grandsons, attend their sports events and see their different personalities develop.
I grew up with a sister and always looked at the interaction of families with both boys and girls. It looked like it was more fun. Men add a different spice to life. We have raced, skated, camped, fished, hunted, watched football and been involved in all of their passions, which adds so much to my life. Celebrate all the men in your family; they truly add a different flair.

It is no accident that a nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to justice for all protects property rights. Property is the foundation of every right we have, including the right to be free. John Locke, the philosophical father of the American Revolution and the inspiration for Thomas Jefferson when he drafted the Declaration of Independence, stated the issue simply: “Lives, Liberties, and Estates, which I call by the general Name, Property.”
