Hello friends,

It's been my pleasure to work with our publisher, community superstar Lisa Thibault to bring this magazine to you every month for three years. Happy anniversary to Roswell City Lifestyle mag! That's more than 720 pages of stories about YOU, your neighbors, local businesses and good people doing good work in Roswell.

Thank you Lisa, for sharing this Lifestyle Letter space with me to do some bragging! It's our kids and pets issue, and I have both. And then some!

My husband Jim and I have three grown children, two beautiful grandchildren and three sassy cats. The newest member of the family is June Emily Sue Spearman, born June 21. Lucky for me, June and her brother Teddy (5) live just 20 minutes away. How I got this issue to the printer with all that cuteness is a miracle!

Speaking of marvels, my daughter, Molly and her partner are moving to Atlanta after too many years in NYC. My son Patrick graduated from GSU in December, and is working in the film industry, living near Old Fourth Ward. How did I get so lucky to have all my kids near the roost? When we are all together, my heart swells.

The cats are Johnny, Tommy and Vito. And yes, they are gangsters, all rescues with big personalities.

I'm so very blessed to have a healthy family, humans who care deeply and are creative.

In this issue, you'll find stories about children and animals and people who are passionate about protecting and nurturing them.

Meet Evan S. Porter, a Roswell author whose debut novel Dad Camp, is a tender story about a loving dad who whisks his preteen away to a week-long father-daughter summer camp to preserve their bond before he loses her to teenage girlhood.

Tran Bui's story about animal rescue organizations fueled by volunteers will inspire you to pitch in.

At Roswell City Lifestyle, we're all about passion projects and giving back. The Dare to Care Women are a formidable group of volunteers who travel to Jamaica and beyond to work with orphans. Read the story on page 48.

Enjoy this issue and do share your photos of the kids and pets in your life who make your heart swell. Tag us on Instagram or Facebook to share the love!

Have a great month and thank you for sharing our journey.

All my best,

Butterflies Are Back

Butterflies are back at Roswell's Chattahoochee Nature Center: The Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell, Georgia, is hosting its popular Butterfly Encounter through August 11. Visitors can enjoy hundreds of native butterflies, participate in the Nature Exchange, and explore the center's various programs.

Sunset Sips: After Hours at Chattahoochee Nature Center

Every day brings something new when you visit Chattahoochee Nature Center. On the trails, woodpeckers are tap-tap-tapping overhead in search of insects. Near the garden, an opossum snuffles under the brush. In the ponds, tadpoles wriggle from leaf to leaf. Find out who rules the evenings at CNC’s Sunset Sips, when the daytime creatures have settled in as the sun goes down. 8/8 - Marcella Jones and Brown Liquor Band, 8/22Café Au Lait.

Roswell Proud

The Patriots have claimed Steele Chambers, a Roswell native, off waivers from the Lions. Chambers, who played linebacker at Ohio State, joins the Patriots' roster ahead of day 3 of minicamp. Chambers began his collegiate career as a running back before switching to linebacker in the fall of 2021. He started in 29 games as a linebacker over the last three seasons. In 2023, he finished with a team-leading 41 solo tackles. Roswell is proud!

Recreational Tree Climbing

Roswell Creative Arts with the City present introductory tree climbing courses that are ideal for individuals or groups from age 6 and beyond. These programs will provide a "soft adventure" into the tree tops at Art Center West. The double rope technique and professional climbing gear with saddles and helmets are included. Participants can make the experience as relaxing or challenging as they like.

Science Forever

Let the learning (and fun) continue

For the kids, the Computer Museum of America offers lots of fun activities in their hands-on area such as electronics kits, puzzles, and everyone’s favorite, the IBM Selectric Typewriter. Don’t forget to try out the Retrogaming Area!  Are you still a master at Pac-Man or Donkey Kong? Challenge your kids to a match on any of their vintage games.

• Do you have a budding computer scientist, artist, or forensic scientist? Look for Steve Emery who will be demonstrating his computer chip artwork and Roswell Det. Zack Kowalske who will return to discuss astroforensics during their Talking Tech speaker series. Both will be presenting this fall.

• Spark conversations between the generations at the Punchcard demonstrations. This is not just a demonstration, but you can also punch your own souvenir card!

• CMoA offers field trips for schools and home school groups for up to 120 students. There are also Scout badge workshops for Girl Scouts and Scouting America.

• Promising to be a fantastic day of family fun, CMoA’s Inaugural Pixel Putt will

happen on September 28th. Sign your team up for the Pixel Putt Mini Golf Tournament at Area 51 – Fringe Miniature Golf to support the museum's growing educational programs.

Computer Museum of America is not just for kids, look for Museum After-Hours on October 3.  A 21+ event filled with music, light bites, and digital art. Coming in November, trivia at CMoA. Test your technology, sci-fi, and pop culture knowledge at the museum.

Ever wonder about the history of the punchcard? The punchcard exhibit starts with a Jacquard Loom, one of the earliest uses of punched cards, which helped to make woven fabric more affordable. Herman Hollerith’s invention of electromechanical processing of cards tabulated data for the 1890 census. The IBM family of punch card machines was used for data processing and record-keeping across many industries and academia. Punched cards were even used for matchmaking at the University of Iowa in 1963! Demo set for September 7.

Are you still a master at Pac-Man or Donkey Kong?

ROSWELL AUTHOR'S STORY OF A DAD TRYING TO CONNECT.
“Middle school and teenage-hood looming, he feels Avery slipping away.”

Father of the Bride  meets  The Guncle  in Roswell-based writer and founder of the popular parenting blog Dad Fixes Everything, Evan S. Porter. His debut novel Dad Camp, follows a loving dad who whisks his preteen away to a week-long father-daughter summer camp in a desperate attempt to preserve their bond before he loses her to teenage girlhood.  Dad Camp  follows John, who gave everything up—hobbies, friends, a dream job—to become Super Dad when his daughter Avery was born. Since then, he’s spent nearly every waking second with his best bud, his 11-yearold. Or at least, she was. With middle school and teenage-hood looming, he feels Avery slipping away, and he’ll do just about anything to stay connected.

But his attempts to reconnect with Avery only seem to push her further

away, and his gut tells him she’s hiding something more than preteen angst. Even worse, Camp Triumph is far from the idyllic getaway he had in mind. Instead of quality bonding time, his days are filled with falling-apart cabins, horrible camp food, a group of toxic dads who can’t seem to get along, cringe-worthy group activities, and a camp director who has it out for him.

Amidst the week's chaos, something unexpected happens: John remembers the person he gave up to become a Super Dad. In doing so, he has revelations about his marriage, identity, relationship with Avery, and even a reaction to the other dads. But will he be able to fix all that’s gone terribly wrong before the end-ofcamp Father-Daughter dance, his last chance for a summer memory that will last a lifetime?

Before and Afters

PETS, PASSION, AND PURPOSE

Celebrating heroes of animal rescue

In nearly every community, there are people working tirelessly to make life better for animals in need. From saving strays to hosting rock concerts for rescues, their passion for pets transforms lives daily.

MOSTLY MUTTS ANIMAL RESCUE: TWO DECADES OF SAVING LIVES

Founded in the backyard of its original founder, Mostly Mutts Animal Rescue is now celebrating 20 years of tireless service. What started as a response to the overwhelming crisis of homeless pets has now become a haven for animals across the state.

Kelley Long, a passionate advocate for animal welfare, describes her personal journey, “My dogs changed my life so much for the better.  Working at Mostly Mutts is one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done. I know we are making a difference every day for those who do not have a voice of their own.”

Mostly Mutts is committed to saving pets from euthanasia and homelessness. Even though the organization collaborates with animal control, the mission extends beyond immediate rescue. The long-term vision is to address the root causes of pet overpopulation by opening a low cost spay neuter clinic.

“We are in the process of purchasing the property next to our campus,”

explains Long. “While this opens many exciting opportunities to save lives, it also creates many needs.”

Mostly Mutts thrives on community support. Volunteers, foster homes and financial contributions are essential to the operations. Whether you're looking to donate, volunteer or adopt, visit MostlyMutts.org to learn how you can contribute.

ROCK FOR RESCUES: WHERE MUSIC AND ANIMAL WELFARE MEET

Rock for Rescues was born from Ray Baker’s passion for music and his love for animals. Inspired one night by his sleeping chocolate lab, Duncan, Baker envisioned a platform that combined these two loves. Since its inception in 2018, Rock for Rescues has grown from a “cute little idea” to a major non-profit organization, with events that have drawn thousands.

The foundation's mission is to provide local animal rescues with a voice, stage and platform through music events. By partnering with cities, venues and businesses, Rock for Rescues raises awareness and funds for a variety of animal welfare groups from Atlanta Wild Animal Rescue Effort, Georgia House Rabbit Society, Good Mews, Byrdhouse Ministries, Wags and Wiggles Dog Rescue and One Paw at a Time.

“We have done the research,” says Baker. “We do a deep dive into the operation of each non-profit rescue organization we partner with to make sure their mission aligns with ours and that they truly need our help. When you donate to Rock for Rescues, you can be assured your money, time and effort are appropriately used for the cause.”

Rock for Rescue events have featured everything from up-and-coming bands to ambassador animals, creating memorable experiences that connect rescues and the community.

Businesses and individuals can support Rock for Rescues by attending events, partnering or donating. More information is available at RockForRescues.org

ALL ABOUT CATS RESCUE: A FELINE-FOCUSED MISSION

Kristy Grieco’s journey into cat rescue began with her first cat Coco, a stray tabby who became her constant companion. This deep connection inspired her to start All About Cats Rescue in 2011. The organization focuses on rescuing cats and kittens from high-kill shelters in North Georgia, and providing them with medical care and permanent homes. Each cat or kitten receives medical vetting including spay or neuter surgeries, tests for FIV/FeLV/HW, age-appropriate vaccinations, microchipping and rabies shots. In 2023, 321 cats and kittens were placed into loving homes.

"So many lives in our community are enriched by a loving cat from All About Cats. One of our most pressing needs, besides donations, is foster homes to temporarily care for our cats or kittens until they are ready for adoption. Without a shelter, the number of cats we can rescue depends on the number of foster homes. We can save more cats and kittens with more foster homes. Our rescue will provide the necessary supplies and medical care. It’s a great way to teach your kids to give back to the community. A little space and love ensures a kitten or cat makes it from a kill shelter into a family's home," says Kristy Grieco.

This Roswell-based rescue operates solely with volunteer support and donations, ensuring that every dollar goes toward the cats' care and well-being. To adopt, volunteer, foster or donate, visit AllAboutCats.org CONTINUED >

THE HOMELESS PET FOUNDATION:  HOSTING ADOPTION EVENTS TO PLACE PETS IN FOSTER FAMILIES UNTIL FOREVER HOMES CAN BE FOUND.

The Homeless Pet Foundation is located in Marietta. It was founded by Dr Michael Good of Town & Country Veterinary Clinic— now Beyond Pets Animal Hospital—when he saw first-hand the need to get adoptable pets out of overcrowded shelters to prevent unnecessary euthanasia. Since inception in 1998, they have rescued and adopted over 25,000 dogs and cats!

The organization focuses on three areas: finding adoptive homes through Beyond Pets Animal Hospital, partnering with schools and local businesses to promote pet adoptions through their Homeless Pet Clubs, and transporting pets from the Southeast to other areas of the country where there is greater demand. A Magical Night

Friends of Bulloch Magnolia Ball 2024 sets records

Sandy Buhler, Lisa Thibault and Walt Burnotes
Tod ‘Smiley’ Baker, Billy Reeves, and Ernie Geyer.

The Friends of Bulloch, Inc. 39th Magnolia Ball set new records for the most guests, the most new guests, more younger guests, the most sponsors, the most successful live and silent auctions, and the most funds raised for the preservation of Bulloch Hall. It was a night for the record books!  Guests commented that they had a great time and that it was the best ball they had attended.  There was so much excitement that the energy was palpable and the night flew by. The Emerald Empire Band’s upbeat tempo kept the dance floor crowded all night. And the Dunwoody Country Club hit the ball out of the park with delicious food and outstanding service!  As the President of Friends of Bulloch, Bob Hagan, sums up, “The 39th Magnolia Ball goes down in history as one of our most successful! A sell out crowd, lots of dollars raised for ongoing preservation of Bulloch Hall, fabulous auctions, a beautiful, fun evening, and record sponsors. I look forward to celebrating our 40th next year.  Friends of Bulloch Magnolia Ball continues to be the event not to miss.”

The theme emphasized why Bulloch Hall is historically significant in a 10-minute video produced by Tran Bui Productions that told of the “Romance of Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. and Mittie Bulloch” and their “Wedding in Bulloch Hall That Made History” in December of 1853.  Mittie & Theo had four children, one of whom would become the 26th President of the United States. Today Bulloch Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only nationally recognized treasure in Roswell

by its connection to President Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., who visited the home of his mother in 1905.  The video voiceover was done by Roswell’s own Katrina Loncaric, talented actress, singer, dancer/choreographer, and director who was in both the Broadway and Las Vegas productions of Mel Brooks'  The Producers, and has a long running voiceover career.

The evening was filled with highlights. As guests entered the Dunwoody Country Club there was an enormous backdrop (step and repeat) of Bulloch Hall. Many photos were captured by Wayne Albright Photography that can be viewed on the FriendsOfBulloch. org website. The foyer bustled with guests evaluating the exclusive silent auction items and those that would be offered in the live auction.  The ballroom was stunning with magnificent floral arrangements designed by Paul Chmielewski, former president, owner and designer of Blumenhaus Florist in Buckhead. His arrangements have been enthralling Magnolia Ball guests for 20 years.  Artist Ann Bailey was at an easel painting the Magnolia Ball Ballroom that the auction winner would be painted into!  Brown & Co. generously donated beautiful “Diamonds by the Yard” one carat earrings that prompted many bids. The live auction also include a one-of-a-kind painting by local artist Melany Shaffer, a private dinner by Jacque & Joe Digieso, and a South African photo safari. Gloria Mattei of Nothing Bundt Cakes generously donated mini-bundt cakes of assorted flavors for dessert, which the guests loved.   Bob Hagan, President of Friends of Bulloch, welcomed everyone and expressed his gratitude to the sponsors,

especially Malon Mimms who has been the presenting sponsor for numerous years.  Mr. Hagan also introduced the Magnolia Ball co-chairs, Chris Archer and Jonathan Crooks, who were presented gifts for their outstanding contributions.  None of this immense success would have been possible without the wonderful Magnolia Ball Committee led by the co-chairs and a team that included Nancy Alterman, Pam Billingsley, Sandy Buhler, Paul Chmielewski, Marion Cockcroft, Jacque Digieso, Bob Hagan, Cathy Jones, Gwen Koehler, Katrina Loncaric, Anu Mongia, Betty Price, Ruby Purdie, Susan Rumble, Karen Schwank, Melany Shaffer, and Margie Watson.

The mission of this year’s Magnolia Ball fundraiser included 1) the restoration of the original 1839 front door estimated to cost $15,000.  Upon hearing this, three generous gentlemen collaborated and donated to this restoration. 2) The Bulloch Hall property has a valuable collection of legacy trees that require skilled care by arborists estimated at $33,000. 3) Mittie’s Garden, a favorite of visitors, has been badly neglected and needs to be replanted. Estimates are being sought. Another guest made a big donation, in addition to their sponsorship, to help achieve these goals to preserve Bulloch Hall.

Next year will be the 40th Magnolia Ball. Co-chairs Jonathan Crooks and Karen Schwank, along with the Magnolia Ball committee, are busy identifying venues and dates, which they plan to announce as soon as confirmed.  Stay tuned and don’t miss this event!

LEADERSHIP NORTH FULTON'S LATEST PROJECT

It was a leap of faith to relocate our family to Roswell during the pandemic, after working in New York City for 25 years. Not only does this beautiful region have wonderful economic development momentum, but we also have a big heart. We do not take our abundance of opportunity for granted. I am inspired by learning about the various charitable organizations locally, and most recently through my involvement with the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce (GNFCC).

One of GNFCC’s opportunities is the Leadership North Fulton (LNF) program – the ultimate cross-connect of service and leadership.  Leadership North Fulton has been the region’s signature leadership development program for more than 30 years. Each year, graduating participants join the ranks of more than 500 LNF alumni in continuing to invest their time, talent, and resources in our community.

Each LNF class selects a service project whereby its 35 classmates collaborate and utilize the group's talents, all having varied careers, skills, and backgrounds, which will ultimately have a lasting impact on the region.

This year’s class chose to work with Foster Care Support Foundation (FCSF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, public charity organization, serving a vital and growing need throughout Georgia, by providing free clothing, infant equipment, and developmental toys to thousands of children in foster and relative care.

The mission of FCSF is to strengthen foster and relative care families' ability to meet their displaced children's needs. About 75% of the 4,500 children served in Georgia are now raised by grandparents, without the biological parent involvement, due to drugs, abuse, neglect or abandonment. Most of the relative caregivers receive no stipend to help raise the children.

The noteworthy deliverables for FCSF provided by the 2024 LNF class are: 1) facility expansion blueprints, 2) new building signage to greet patrons, donors, and volunteers, 3) a donated commercial-grade printer, and 4) a fundraising awareness campaign, which highlighted how foster care donations can be made with Georgia State tax credits.

I am very grateful to be a recently welcomed member of this robust Greater North Fulton community, as I reflect on my participation in LNF’s Class of 2024 and our class service project. Sincerest thanks to everyone’s contributions to this effort!

The LNF Class of 2024’s graduation celebrated with GNFCC at their monthly luncheon on June 26, along with this year’s Non-Profit Awards. For more information, please visit GNFCC.com

Roswell photographer's legacy
ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF
PHOTOGRAPHY BY RON SHERMAN

If Ron Sherman’s photographic career had been limited to images published in national magazines it would be a remarkable achievement, but now he has published a new book,  Witness: A Photographic Essay of Humor and Hope,  that is nothing short of a pictorial love affair with his adopted hometown of Atlanta. In his pages, you will experience the evolution of dazzling skylines and cityscapes and meet some of the city’s most notable public figures, from Jimmy Carter to Coretta Schott King and Ted Turner. As Atlanta historian Paul Crater writes, “Witness represents the culmination of Sherman’s brilliant career, and his gift to all of us.”

Ron describes his 1971 arrival in Atlanta as being like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, “leaving behind the black and whites of my native Cleveland childhood and stepping into a new world of vibrant color” of flowering dogwoods and flaming azaleas. In Witness, his color images capture everything from a Klan cross-burning at Stone Mountain to the Peachtree Road Race and a National Grits Festival. When Jimmy Carter was elected governor of Georgia, Ron knew it meant assignments for him, but he had “no idea it would take him from Peachtree Street to Pennsylvania Avenue.” His picture

of incoming and outgoing Governors (Carter replacing Lester Maddox) “captured a profound change taking place.” And, of course, Ron was there on January 20, 1977, to capture the image of Jimmy Carter’s inauguration as President of the United States.

If you want to see a four-by-five-foot enlargement of Ron Sherman’s iconic picture of Hank Aaron rounding the bases after breaking Babe Ruth’s home run record, you can visit the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Or you can own the picture (along with 90 other historic Atlanta photographs) by ordering it at Witness.RonSherman.com.

Life-Changing, Life-Saving

“We are so blessed in this community, but to get out of our ‘bubble’ and serve means so much to them and to us.”

The Dare to Care mission team had a life-changing trip earlier this year. Together, they traveled to Jamaica with 14 women from Roswell and South Georgia on a mission trip with Mustard Seed Communities, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for the most vulnerable populations in society.

“We are so blessed in this community, but to get out of our ‘bubble’ and serve means so much to them and to us," Kelly Lobuglio says. She and her daughter Lilly traveled with the group. "It was shocking to me how some of the children were abandoned because either the mother was unable to care for them or they were unwanted."

Mustard Seed Communities (MSC) began in 1978 as a home for children with disabilities on the outskirts of Kingston, Jamaica and has expanded to Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. The majority of programs are dedicated to the residential care of children and adults with a range of developmental and physical disabilities, children affected by HIV in Jamaica, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.

Every June, Terry Newton of Roswell takes a group of 14 or so women, which she calls the Dare to Care Women, to Jamaica where they serve the residents in need. “We all are so very blessed and with those blessings comes the responsibility to share with others, whether it be through time, talent or tithes,” says Terry. “When I take these groups of women to experience the joy that is Mustard Seed, not only am I sharing my many blessings, but I also get to see the change

in the lives of others - the residents, the caregivers and especially the women who have stepped out of their comfort zones to care for and love those most abandoned individuals who have been abandoned by a society that deems them unworthy.”

“This is the second year my daughter Lilly and I have done this trip. We did not know what to expect last year and it truly changed our lives,” says Kelly.

Dare to Care met children with severe disabilities that have been abandoned. “It’s life-changing. They are so happy for you to hold them or simply say their name. The amazing caregivers care for them day in and day out, and it is evident that they are truly filled with Christ’s love,” says Kelly.

Lilly now carries a new sense of purpose that has forever changed her perspective on the world and her place within it. “We laughed, we danced, sang songs, pampered the caregivers, played in the sun on the most beautiful island, but we also gardened, did laundry, fed, bathed, lent a hand to help wherever we could, and most importantly loved on the residents at the orphanage,” says Lilly. “For our last two days, we stayed at an orphanage for young mothers (ages 12-18) and their children. These kids have been dealt some really hard battles and despite everything, they are the happiest humans I’ve ever met.”

Mustard Seed has recently taken in 59 kids from Haiti who the Dare to Care will meet soon.  Mission volunteers like you bring faith and love to the residents of MSC. While in Mandeville, Jamaica you will spend time getting

to know them while completing work projects to improve the facilities where they live and learn. When you return from your week of service, you become the voice of MSC, sharing the stories of those who cannot tell their own.

“I will continue to share this opportunity I had with anyone who will listen. I hope I was able to make an impact on their lives, but they made a HUGE one on mine

and I will never forget it,” says Lilly. "I’m also extremely grateful to have spent the week with such amazing ladies. Being the youngest one there, I look up to and am so inspired by everyone’s kindness. Mustard Seed will be a part of my life and a part of who I am forever.”

Rooted in his personal experiences with addiction, substance abuse, arrests, and emotional turmoil, Wes’s personal journey would lay the foundation for his mission to help young people who were maneuvering similar life challenges.

"I have been married to my amazing wife Alison for fourteen years and we have two beautiful daughters. Story is 10 years old and River is 7," says Dr. Wes. His wife and daughters are his world and the most important people in his life. "My wife Alison is my grounding force and rock in all I do," says Dr.

Wes. "She offers patience, insight and support in all my pursuits. I could write for eternity on the importance of my family!"

Eternal Strength is deeply relational and humanistic in their mentoring and counseling work. "We really tap into each youth that comes to the center to find out what drives them, what art they love, what mediums they gravitate toward," says Dr. Wes. The team of talented therapists at the Center begin to build each individual therapeutic journey in ways that are co-collaborative, from songwriting, recording, drawing, painting, ceramics and many other forms of expressive arts therapy, i.e. dancing, poetry, spoken word. "Anything expressive and seeing ways that we can offer sacred space for youth to explore, create and process!"

The ABCs of Learning Outside

High Meadows School & Camp began on an afternoon hike with friends, which is very appropriate for the legacy High Meadows still holds today, 50 years later. We sat down with Head of School and Camp, Lisa Baker to find out more about the school, with an enrollment of 340 for pre-K to eighth grade students.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN CONNECTING WITH YOUR STUDENTS?

We do not notice a huge issue in connecting with students because teachers meet students where they are and build learning in partnership with them.  Our approach is cooperative.  There is room and time for students and teachers to create connection in school through strong personal relationships with one another.  This creates a culture where students can be challenged and grow in remarkable ways.  They are excellent students and even better friends.

HOW DO YOU HELP STUDENTS BALANCE SCHOOL+FRIENDS+ACTIVITIES +CHILL TIME+ FAMILY?

As students and their families are more and more scheduled, this can be more challenging.  I suppose the most important thing is that we tend to limit “homework” to things that really make a difference to learning.  After all, so much of what children need is time to experience the world and to learn how to navigate different situations.  We also model this balance at school by providing time outside in multiage groups and through lots of play and exploration.  Our Middle Years students carry more academic work outside of school; however, even they report that there’s room and time for life outside of school.

YOUR MODEL IS UNIQUE. TELL US ABOUT THE SCHOOL.

What makes us most unique is there is a true sense of wonder and joy on our campus.  For 50 years, we have placed a premium on childhood. We couple fun and adventure with critical thought and skill development.  Our students are active partners in their education.  Additionally, our 42-acre campus is an inspiration for our work with students and reminds us of the interconnectedness of our world.   Ultimately, our students emerge as ethical leaders with the skills and habits of mind to find joy and purpose in an ever-changing world.

Woof, Chef!

MEET CHEFS AND THE PETS WHO MAKE THEM HAPPY.

Derek Dollar and Basil
Jocelyn Dubuke, Margaux and Hermie.

Basil , was part of a litter that was rescued from under a mobile home in North Georgia and was adopted from the Cherokee County Animal Shelter. Chef Derek Dollar's favorite herb is basil, so it was obvious that when he met the puppy they were meant to be together. Basil is a Chug, a Chihuahua and Pug mix. "He was just 3 pounds and the cutest little puppy," Derek says.

Derek is executive chef and managing partner at The Mill Restaurant in Roswell. With his culinary career now spanning over two decades, he has gained a reputation as an inventive and uncompromising chef who demands the very best and keeps his own plate quite full in the process. In addition to the traditional executive chef responsibilities, he has experimented in horticulture with the goal of restaurant sustainability, along with staff and guest education on the importance of local partnerships with farmers and how to utilize garden bounties and hyper local ingredients each night. Because of this, in 2017 Chef Dollar was chosen by Agriculture Commissioner of Georgia Gary Black to join the Georgia Grown Executive Chef team for his outstanding contributions to the sustainable dining practices he utilizes in his menu planning. With this honor, Chef Derek, along with

other well-known Atlanta chefs, traveled to cook and represent the South at a James Beard House series showcasing Southern chefs who specialize in utilizing local ingredients.

Margaux , a rescue, was about 5 months old when she was found on the street and brought to the shelter. Jocelyn Dubuke fell in love with her from the second they met. "She just climbed into my arms and cuddled me. She’s still my love bug," says Jocelyn, the chef and owner of JARDÍ chocolates. Hermie is a half-sibling of one of Jocelyn’s farmers market regulars. "He’s an absolute Velcro dog. If I’m sitting down he needs to be in my lap. If my hands are free, they need to be petting him,” says Jocelyn. Hermie is also a great adventurer. He loves to go kayaking and paddle boarding on weekends.

Jocelyn is known for creating desserts using fresh, local ingredients, and unique flavor combinations that always wow her guests. In 2015 Jocelyn decided to open JARDÍ, a chocolate shop in Atlanta. JARDÍ brings the same dedication and wow-factor to the world of chocolate confections, using local ingredients whenever possible, and never any preservatives, additives, or food dyes.  Available at The Open Mind Center, 1425 Market Boulevard, Suite 500, Roswell.

TODD RICHARDS' CORNBREAD

School Night Side

I love this cornbread recipe and use leftovers (of which there are few) for making croutons for a Caesar salad. I met Atlanta chef Todd Richards years ago and his star continues to shine bright.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 cups (about 11 1/2 oz) plain white cornmeal (I've used yellow and it's denser)

• 2 cups (about 8 1/2 oz) all-purpose flour

• 2 cups (16 oz) buttermilk

• 1 cup granulated sugar

• 8 oz (1 cup) unsalted butter, melted

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 1 teaspoon kosher salt

• 4 large eggs

• 1 teaspoon blended olive oil

• 1 oz (2 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 375F. Stir together the cornmeal, flour, buttermilk, sugar, melted butter, baking soda, salt and eggs in a large bowl.

2. Heat a 12-inch cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add the oil, and tilt the skillet to spread evenly around skillet. Pour the cornbread batter into the hot skillet.

3. Bake the cornbread in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 40 minutes. Top with the softened butter.

ENDLESS

Summer

SCHOOL'S IN SESSION, SO ADD FUN TO

THE SCHEDULE.

When our three kids were ages 7 - 13, we took them to Great Wolf Lodge (in the Midwest) and they ran amok among the three-story waterslides, lazy river and wave pool. They slept in a bunk room that looked like a tiny log cabin dropped into one end of our suite. We lost one pair of goggles, a flip-flop and a few hours of sleep, but all vowed to return. And, 20 years later, we did! This time, with a grandson in tow.

We took our grandson Teddy to the Great Wolf Lodge in La Grange and found not much has changed with the family resort chain's winning formula. You can access the water park any time after opening on your arrival day, until closing time on your departure day. There's a four-story water fort tree house, seven different slides - varying in elevation and curves, bars, ice cream, coffee, a taco bar, two sit-down restaurants, pizza and burger counters and evening activities for kids. I recommend reserving a cabana with seating, a mini fridge, towels, a TV, outlets and a bit of privacy. Not that the kids will spend much time there, but you can. Elsewhere at the resort, there's Topgolf, a climbing wall, mini golf, arcade and ropes course.

Stop in for some small-town shopping and explore historic downtown LaGrange. Charlie Joseph's serves up hotdogs and nostalgia from the c. 1920s diner. Wild Leap (with a recently opened taproom in downtown Atlanta) offers craft beer and pub food.

Long live summer!

A Fairytale Bedroom

When interior designer Meredith Page was working on one of the most important projects of her career, she and her partner in Page House, Liz Livingston, agreed to stay centered.

Meredith wanted the design to have a peaceful energy, so they kept the palette soft and added nature-inspired touches. The project was baby Page's nursery in their Roswell home.

Since then, as her daughter has grown into a more self-expressive toddler phase, Meredith says, "We punched up the saturation. We want her to feel creative in her space as she spends more time in it with only her dolls allowed."

"She snuggles up in a swivel chair that we upholstered in velvet to match a Page House stool and reads to them every day - it's so sweet," says Meredith.

Page House is a full-service interior design studio run with love by local creatives Meredith Page and Liz Livingston. In Spring 2024, the duo expanded into retail. Their curated catalog includes an array of artful objects for the lived-in home, but what really sets them apart from others is the debut of their  Collections,  signature sets of interior styling staples designed to provide an entire essential layer to any space.

FRESH and SUSTAINABLE

I went on a diet and it feels so good.

I cut out the mountain of big plastic jugs for soaps and detergents in my life and I feel lighter, cleaner and more responsible. When we became empty nesters, I noticed the bulk of our recycling was plastic, so I did a bit of research on alternatives.

I'm loving laundry detergent sheets which are equally as tough on stains and cheaper than the plastic-packaged soaps. Scents are less intense, so if you like perfumed laundry, look for in-wash scent boosters.

Kind Laundry offers two scents, non-toxic, chemical-free and contained in 100% recyclable packaging. Many eco-friendly brands offer a subscription to sync with your needs.

Check out the list of Kind Laundry's  "hero ingredients:"

• Sapindus Mukorossi - Commonly known as "soap nuts" produces a foam and works as a natural surfactant to trap dirt and remove it.

• Camilla Japonica - A natural softener and degreaser. Cold-pressed oil sourced from the seeds of a plant native to Japan.

• Kaolin - Highly absorbent cleanser and deodorizer. This mineral clay helps give the sheets their shape.

• Sunflower Seed Oil - Protects fabrics from discoloration and naturally softens.

“I'M LOVING LAUNDRY DETERGENT SHEETS WHICH ARE equally as tough on stains AND cheaper than THE PLASTIC-PACKAGED SOAPS. SCENTS ARE less intense , SO IF YOU LIKE PERFUMED LAUNDRY, LOOK FOR IN-WASH SCENT BOOSTERS.”
