Beautiful Bonds with Kids & Pets

As the summer sun reaches its peak, August brings a unique blend of warmth and excitement, a perfect time to celebrate the joy and happiness that kids and pets bring into our lives. This month, we dive into the enchanting world of children and their furry, feathered, or finned companions, exploring the boundless love and lessons they impart.

And then, when we combine children and pets, there is a special kind of magic that happens when they connect. Whether it’s the screeching giggle, the wag of a tail, the purr, or the joyful chirping, these moments create beautiful memories. Pets teach our children about responsibility, compassion, and unconditional love, while children bring boundless energy and wonder to their pets. It’s a relationship that enriches both lives in ways we often can’t fully express.

This issue is a tribute to that beautiful bond. We celebrate the laughter and learning, the playful antics, and the comforting companionship that define the relationship between kids and pets. It’s a relationship that transcends words, touching the deepest parts of our hearts and reminding us of the simple joys of life.

Speaking of connections, I'm thrilled to announce that we have launched a podcast, a new platform where we can connect more deeply with our community. I would love to get to know you better and hear your stories, experiences, and insights. If you’re interested in being interviewed, please send an email to camilla. dorand@citylifestyle.com or a text 702-762-5030 to explore the possibility. Your voice and stories are what make our community lively and unique, and I can’t wait to share them with our listeners.

As you flip through the pages of this month's issue, I hope you find stories that resonate with your experiences, inspire new adventures, and perhaps even spark a desire to welcome a new pet into your family. May you be reminded of the special moments when a pet’s loyal gaze or a child’s infectious laughter brightened your day.

Thank you for being part of our community. We cherish the opportunity to share these heartwarming tales with you and look forward to celebrating the many ways kids and pets bring light and love into our lives.

From my heart to yours,

August 2024

PEACEFUL SPACES FOR CHILDREN

Creating calming environments for families, Danni Sinclair, Holistic Interior Designer and Owner of My Peace of Space, aims to help parents and children alike find peace, balance, and wellbeing within their homes.

My Peace of Space was born from a deeply personal journey of overcoming. “Despite outward success, I was struggling internally, feeling overwhelmed and disconnected. I sought solace on a beautiful yoga retreat in Nicaragua,” said Danni.

This retreat sparked her passion for integrating retreat-like tranquility into everyday design. “I focus on creating holistic environments that support the wellbeing of the entire family. This philosophy extends to our children as well,” said Danni.

With holistic interior design, Danni uses color therapy to help balance, energy, and promote positive emotional responses. “Color has a profound impact on everyone's mood and behavior, especially children,” said Danni. “If you let kids decide, they’ll choose the most saturated color. While bold colors can boost creativity, they can also be very energizing and stimulating, which is not ideal for bedtime. Soft, muted colors create calm and relaxation.”

Danni prefers subdued colors that ensure children are not overstimulated, reducing stress, and creating peace, which leads to a calmer, happier, household for all.

“Soothing palettes not only benefit the child, but also help parents who are struggling with their child's bedtime routines,” said Danni. “By creating an environment that inherently encourages relaxation, parents can find it easier to establish and maintain a peaceful bedtime routine.”

HOW DANNI SINCLAIR CREATES CALM ROOMS FOR YOUTH

In Feng Shui, rounded edges, soft patterns, and nature-inspired themes are used to promote relaxation and focus for children. Avoid busy, bright patterns as they can overstimulate. Minimal, cohesive designs with natural elements and soft colors are best.

“Children get overwhelmed easily with many options and visual clutter. By providing space for movement and freedom without overcrowding, you allow them to use their creativity and imagination,” said Danni.

Young children are playful and need lots of play in movement in their daily lives. Teens, on the other hand, tend to be more introspective and value their privacy. “Teen’s rooms should encourage and support these varying needs while also providing designated spaces for play, study, and relaxation,” said Danni. “We can do this with thoughtful zoning.”

While parents should help lead, it’s important to consider a child’s personal preferences. “If you don't create a bedroom they love, they might end up in bed with you! As a mom currently sleep training, I understand this all too well,” said Danni. “Children grow at an exponential rate—their tastes, routines, habits, and hobbies are constantly evolving. You want to create a room that they can grow into.”

Danni doesn’t design for the child they are today; she’s designing for the kid they will be three to five years from now. “Incorporating their favorite colors, themes, and interests can make them comfortable and connected to their environment. However, you may not want these to be the primary features of the room,” said Danni. “Use accent pieces to incorporate their current interests, which can be easily interchanged as they grow out of them.” This gives children a sense of agency and pride in their own space, but also fosters their emotional wellness and future development.

Using various textures, like soft rugs and natural fabrics, along with gentle sounds such as white noise, helps create a soothing environment. For children with sensory issues, choose calming textures and sounds to ensure they feel safe. Clutter also increases anxiety and restricts focus. To maintain organization, use easy-to-access bins and shelves, and involve children in regular decluttering.

One common mistake parents sometimes make in designing spaces is that they create a space with themselves in mind, not their children. “I’m guilty of this too. As parents, we often want to give our kids the things we were not fortunate enough to have growing up,” said Danni. “It's important to understand that children's needs and energies are different from ours. What might be calming and serene for an adult could be overstimulating for a child.”

That's why she offers Feng Shui Assessments for kids. “It's a great place to start. It allows us to understand the child's dominant energy type and design their space that supports their unique imprint. This approach ensures that the room is visually pleasing and energetically aligned with the child,” said Danni.

To create a peaceful environment that grows with your child and adapts to their changing needs, Danni recommends booking a redesigned call with her ( bydannisinclair.com). With her help, parents can design a flexible and adaptable space that serves multiple purposes, adjusting as their children grow.

“I RECOMMEND USING EARTH TONES AND PASTEL SHADESKNOWN FOR THEIR SOOTHING PROPERTIES.”

RESCUING ONE PAW AT A TIME

With their sunny dispositions and heart-melting smiles, golden retrievers have long been cherished as one of humanity's most beloved four-legged friends. Known for their intelligence, loyalty, and gentle nature, these golden-coated charmers have an uncanny ability to brighten even the gloomiest of days. Their unconditional devotion and playful spirit make them not only pets, but also true family members, bringing joy and love to countless homes worldwide.

Locally, the Golden Retriever Rescue Southern Nevada (GRRSN) has been dedicated to providing a sanctuary for displaced golden retrievers since 2003. More than two decades

later, the commitment of many volunteers and board members has remained steadfast. And, considering the organization is operated solely by volunteers, every donation received by GRRSN is directed toward the care of the dogs they rescue.

GRRSN's dedication extends beyond purebred goldens to include golden mixes and other dogs with the signature golden personality. Regardless of medical or behavioral challenges, the rescue organization has never turned away a golden in need.

Each golden receives the ultimate care, from seniors requiring specialized attention to dogs with storm phobias

One non-profit’s lifelong commitment to golden retrievers

that have relocated from the Midwest. Its Forever Foster Program ensures that lifelong care for dogs with chronic health issues is funded by the non-profit organization. Despite escalating veterinary costs, with an annual expenditure averaging $70K, GRRSN persists, seeking grants and community support. Pre-pandemic fundraising events were crucial for GRRSN's financial stability and community outreach, but their future remains uncertain as many events have not returned.

WHY ADOPT INSTEAD OF SHOP?

Rescue dogs, often from breeders, offer a second chance at companionship. While the allure of a puppy is strong, the commitment may deter some. Rescue dogs, though not without quirks that all dogs have, bring joy and loyalty to their forever homes.

Get Involved

1. Adopt: Consider adoption. Puppies are rare in rescue, but goldens are considered puppies until age three. From mid-life companions to senior dogs, there's a golden for every family.

2. Foster: There are many fostering opportunities. Your temporary care will make a difference in a dog's life.

3. Pet Sit: Consider becoming a pet sitter. Proceeds from your service will support the rescue organization.

4. Donate: Your donation, whether one-time or recurring, helps cover essential expenses like vaccinations.

5. Shop at Smith's: Link your Smith's Shopping card to GRRSN, a percentage of your spending will go back to the charity.

6. Estate Plan: Include GRRSN in your estate plan, so your kindness lives on.

THE ADOPTION PROCESS

GRRSN's adoption process is meticulous and guided by compassion. From the initial contact to home visits, every step ensures the perfect match. Post-adoption support, including access to trainers, aids in a smooth transition.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Whether you are looking for a full commitment, would like to provide a temporary home, interested in sponsoring medical care, or want a way to make a difference in your own way, everyone can support GRRSN's mission.

To adopt, foster, pet sit, volunteer, donate, or even surrender a golden, contact Golden Retriever Rescue Southern Nevada at 702-598-4653 or visit grrsn.org.

IMAGINE DRAGONS' TYLER ROBINSON FOUNDATION

WORLD-FAMOUS LAS VEGAS BAND PROVES TO BE A LIFELINE FOR PEDIATRIC CANCER PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES

Native Las Vegans Imagine Dragons are considered one of the most successful and best-selling music artists on the planet. The American alternative-rock band has sold more than 74 million albums and 65 million digital songs globally. They have also sold more than 160 billion streams across music platforms. Imagine Dragons has won a Grammy Award, an MTV Video

Music Award, three American Music Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, and one World Music Award. But beyond their musical achievements, they still find time for Las Vegas and its children.

In 2013, Imagine Dragons founded the Tyler Robinson Foundation (TRF, trf.org) in memory of Tyler Robinson, a young fan whose battle with cancer and admirable spirit left an indelible mark on the band. The foundation stands out not only for its mission–to provide both financial and emotional support to families affected by

pediatric cancer, ensuring they do not face their struggles alone–but also for the heartfelt, hands-on involvement of its founders.

When Imagine Dragons met Tyler Robinson, they were deeply inspired by the teenager’s resilience in the face of cancer. In return, Tyler found strength in the band’s music, particularly their hit song "It's Time." His story and his positive outlook, even during the toughest times, moved the band members profoundly. Tragically, Tyler passed away in 2013. His legacy lives on through TRF.

Jennifer Carleton, chair of the board of directors for TRF, emphasizes the importance of their tagline "Stronger Family Together." This phrase encapsulates the foundation's core belief that families are the cornerstone of a child's fight against cancer. "Beyond financial assistance, TRF aims to offer emotional and psychological support, helping families maintain a sense of normalcy and strength," Jennifer explains. “Through counseling services, family retreats, and support groups, TRF creates a nurturing environment where families can connect and find solace.”

But what makes this organization even more unique is how Imagine Dragons goes

"WE’RE COMMITTED TO STANDING BY THESE FAMILIES EVERY STEP OF THE WAY."

above and beyond to engage with pediatric cancer patients and their families. The band’s involvement is not limited to public appearances or fundraising events. They create unforgettable experiences and actively participate in the charity’s initiatives, often visiting hospitals, providing exclusive concert tickets, engaging in backstage meet-and-greets, and delivering personalized video messages. These interactions bring immense joy and inspiration to young patients and their families.

Dan Reynolds, lead vocalist of Imagine Dragons, shares his heartfelt connection to the non-profit organization: “The work of the Tyler Robinson Foundation is

incredibly close to my heart. Seeing the courage and resilience of these young fighters and their families is a constant reminder of the power of love and community. TRF is more than a foundation; it’s a family, and we’re committed to standing by these families every step of the way."

The foundation also prides itself on strategic partnerships that enhance its ability to support pediatric cancer families. By collaborating with hospitals, research institutions, and other nonprofits, TRF can provide comprehensive support that includes cutting-edge treatments, clinical trials, and holistic care. These partnerships extend the reach and impact of the foundation’s work, ensuring families receive the best possible support during their challenging journey. Through direct grants and partnerships, TRF has served more than 500 Nevada families in the past decade. Notable contributions come from local initiatives, such as the students of The Alexander Dawson School, who used their school's 3D printer to create and sell items to raise funds for TRF. Their efforts generated significant financial support and inspired their peers and the local community to get involved with the organization.

Furthermore, to ensure access to quality care and resources, TRF’s Family Liaison Azalea Sanchez aids families impacted by a pediatric cancer diagnosis. She has nearly a decade of experience as a cancer mom, is a former grant recipient, and is passionate about raising awareness, advocating for the pediatric oncology community, and assisting families navigate through their own journey.

The foundation’s work is especially prominent during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September. During this time, to educate the public and rally support for the cause, TRF intensifies its efforts with state and national advocacy, awareness drives, social media campaigns, community outreach, and special events. The 2024 Rise Up Gala is scheduled for September 20, 2024, at Wynn Las Vegas and will feature Imagine Dragons performing live. In addition, the gala will be hosted by Joel McHale as the master of ceremonies, with Aisha Tyler serving as the co-host. Guests will also hear powerful testimonials from TRF families. The highlight of the gala each year is when the band invites children on stage to dance and sing with them, an experience that leaves a lasting impact on everyone involved.

In true form, every year in connection with the Rise Up Gala, Imagine Dragons will host a private special activity for the families in attendance, such as a sing-along, a milk and cookies social, or a family barbeque dinner. These moments provide a muchneeded break from the daily challenges of cancer treatments and create cherished memories for the entire family.

As TRF prepares for its annual gala next month, the local community is encouraged to participate. Jennifer invites everyone to contribute, saying, "Your support can make a world of difference to families navigating the toughest battle of their lives. Whether through donations, sponsorships, or volunteering for our TRF

Ambassador Program, every contribution helps build a stronger family together. Together, we can bring hope, joy, and strength to those who need it most.”

Through their music, their foundation, and their genuine care, Imagine Dragons continues to inspire and uplift, ensuring that families facing pediatric cancer do not have to navigate their struggles alone. Imagine Dragons' commitment to TRF embodies this world-famous local group’s dedication to community spirit and to making a tangible difference in the lives of pediatric cancer families, reinforcing that they are more than a band—they are a lifeline to many.

HOLISTIC

AND CARE Development

NURTURING CHILDREN AS THEY THRIVE IN THE MODERN WORLD

At Mojave Springs School in Las Vegas, students are encouraged to learn with their head, heart and hands. It's a holistic educational philosophy ingrained into this Waldorf-inspired, private early childhood and elementary school.

"It really fills my heart with joy seeing this ‘child first’ approach and the freedom the students here have to just be kids," said Ren D’Anelli. She is the board secretary of the Mojave Educational Foundation, the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that operates Mojave Springs School.

Ren said she was initially drawn to volunteering at the school because of its nontraditional approach to learning. Something she wishes she had when she was growing up in Las Vegas, homeschooled during these years as an undiagnosed neuro-divergent child.

“I wish I had this kind of holistic learning experience, combining social skill development with story-driven lessons, handwork, gardening, and violin," said Ren. "Mojave Springs School is a place where a child can feel safe, where they can really live, learn, and be a kid with other kids."

In recent years, the concept of "holistic development" has become more popular as families are finding ways to give their children a learning environment that focuses on all aspects of their growth, and not just their academic advancements. For these parents, it's about giving their children a place to thrive with their overall wellbeing in mind.

At Mojave Springs, students learn in an intimate, nature-immerse environment with low student-teacher ratios. The early education program spans preschool to kindergarten with nature-based class titles (Tansy, Willow and Honeybee). The elementary classes include 1st through 4th grade with a new class entering the addition of 5th grade this coming fall.

“It really fills my heart with joy seeing this ‘child first’ approach.” – Ren D'Anelli

“At our school, we are continuing to add a new grade level each year that we exist, so the kids can grow and learn together with their teachers moving up too. This is called 'looping' classes," said Ren. "Our staff is also evolving with amazing local Waldorf-trained teachers and for the first time, we are cultivating a new leadership structure where three different directors represent the concept of head, heart, and hands in their departments.

CONTINUED >

We want to make sure we have all the right people in place to deliver this holistic and loving experience to all our students and families. The community needs this special little school.”

This kind of dedication to children's overall well-being is also evident for business Jovie Nannies & Sitters. Operating in Nevada, and three other states, Jovie's core mission is to build stronger families through reliable and outstanding childcare.

"We understand the unique needs of families we work with," said Katie Folsom, Owner and Director of Operations for Jovie Nannies and Sitters. "Whether families need an occasional sitter or a long-term nanny, our focus is providing what the parents need but what's best for each child."

Folsom said Jovie has a stellar reputation for connecting parents with professional caregivers from all backgrounds. These nannies and sitters are screened based on rigorous criteria to fit the needs of each family. But Folsom said what it really comes down to is a team that truly cares about children and their overall wellbeing.

"When we interview our potential employees, we really look for people who have genuine enthusiasm for working with children, great attitudes, and creativity," said Folsom. "These are the nannies and the

sitters who are comfortable in all kinds of environments from being inside with the kids helping them with homework to going outside and playing and just having fun together."

Over the years, Jovie has expanded their services to meet the changing needs of families. Especially post-pandemic, Folsom said many families now need different kinds of support when it comes to caregivers for their kids. And for places like Southern Nevada, they are also meeting the needs of popular tourist areas by providing childcare for business conferences and hotels on the Strip to special events like weddings and reunions all over the city.

"The demand for childcare will always be there and it's always evolving," said Folsom. "But at the core is

the child and the families who care about them. We are committed to continually adapting to the needs of each family who are looking for flexible, professional, and vetted support. They are looking for a team that truly cares for not just the wellbeing of each child, but how they are growing and thriving while under our care."

Whether it be at home or at school, families want the best care for their children. For D'Anelli, she said it all comes down to building a community that seeks to create transformational results through children who are creative, independent and kind.

"People who have bought into what we are doing, they are here to stay," said Ren. "We are growing with the community we serve. That's always been our goal."

EMBRACING THE ROLE REVERSAL

Children as caregivers in memory care

As the years pass and the seasons change, the time comes when the roles we grew accustomed to begin to shift, and the children who once relied on their parents for guidance and support find themselves stepping into a new role—that of caregiver and advocate for their aging parents. This journey, often referred to as “parenting your parents,” is a profound, and sometimes challenging, experience that requires patience, compassion, and love.

“We believe that dignity and respect are the cornerstones of a happy, worthwhile existence ...”

In communities such as Silverado Red Rock Memory Care, individuals do not navigate this journey alone. The dedicated team there is committed to providing support to both memory care patients and their families. Embodying the core belief that "everyone deserves a good quality of life," Silverado Red Rock fosters a culture that enhances respect and dignity for every individual they serve.

“We believe that dignity and respect are the cornerstones of a happy, worthwhile existence. There is no higher praise for us than the smile of a happy patient, the thanks of a relieved loved one, or the revitalized embrace of an engaged resident,” says Silverado Red Rock Memory Care Administrator Penny Munn.

Since 1996, they have been committed to creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere that

promotes wellbeing, togetherness, and socialization through activities such as yoga, cooking, crafts, dining, and more. No family member is left out—or behind—since residents can bring their pets along and share in the cuddly joy they bring.

Silverado Red Rock fulfills the lives of both patients with dementia and their families with a myriad of features and options to give residents a distinctive living experience. Memory boxes are placed outside of residents’ homes not only to help with recognition, but also to showcase their individuality and personal memories. The innovative “lean rail” created by Silverado Red Rock to help residents maintain balance more easily. Families enjoy the onsite playground where grandparents and their grandkids can deepen their bond while watching the children play, creating cherished memories together. Even

four-legged family members aren't excluded—they can accompany their loved ones on leisurely strolls through the beautifully manicured courtyards and walking paths.

Silverado provides round-the-clock nursing care to minimize unnecessary hospitalizations and support medical needs, alongside a robust cognitive program that meets the individuals at the stage they are in the dementia process.

“Our tracking and documented clinical outcomes support our success,” says Penny, “We also offer an internationally recognized program for early stages of dementia, called Nexus. This program is an evidence-based, one-of-a-kind, brain health program that has been validated by academic research to slow the progression down as much as 60 percent without the use of medication.”

Silverado Red Rock Memory Care is a community of support that extends its expertise and care to the patients and their families. They even have a “Pledge to Exceptional Care,” which is dedicated to enhancing the lives of residents and their families.

“We are so confident in our commitment that we make a pledge, in writing, to all families. If they are dissatisfied with our services for any reason in the first 60 days after move-in, after we have made our best efforts to meet their loved one’s needs, we will reimburse the administrative and monthly fees paid, and assist them in finding an alternative solution,” said Penny.

Through the expertise and care of communities like Silverado Red Rock Memory Care (silverado. com), families are empowered to embrace their roles as caregiver with dedication and love. And in the embrace of that love, they find solace, strength, and the courage to face whatever lies ahead.

Your Teenager's SKIN

Tips by Acne Clinic Las Vegas’ Justina Sy

CEO of Acne Clinic Las Vegas and Justina’s Corrective Skincare Product Line, Justina Sy was born, raised, and finished her college education in the Philippines. In college, she completed her course and received a degree in finance. After Justina moved to the U.S., she became a licensed advanced esthetician, and, Justina added “I have three children, and all three are U.S. registered nurses.”

Acne Clinic Las Vegas is a specialty corrective skin clinic that specializes in acne, psoriasis, eczema, keratosis pilaris, anti-aging, acne rosacea, and microneedling. In the clinic, they also carry Justina’s corrective skincare products that are enriched with scientifically proven ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, mandelic acid, and retinol. These components are renowned for their ability to unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and promote healthy cell turnover.

Justina’s focus is not only acne, but also corrective skincare treatments. Her true calling? To make a difference in those who struggle with different types of skin challenges.

“Acne is more than just a cosmetic issue and can have profound effects on a teenager’s overall wellbeing. For

teenagers, during that time of development, they can go through self-esteem issues, social withdrawals, and even experience bullying,” said Justina. “Acne is a very common issue for teenagers due to their bodies changing and hormonal changes.”

If parents notice their teen is struggling with acne and skin worries, Justina suggests that they schedule a skin assessment, where their skin will be analyzed and they can learn how an acne clearing program can successfully clear acne.

“We have a holistic approach; no drugs are prescribed here at the clinic. We educate our clients how to live a healthy lifestyle, and recommend skincare products that will heal acne,” said Justina.

“If a teen seems to be acne prone, they should avoid picking at their skin and take into account what kinds of food they’re putting into their body that could be triggering the acne and inflammation such as dairy, chocolate, burgers, fries, and a lot more.”

In the time we live in, almost everyone has access to information and education online where they can research preventative and protective care.

Acne Clearing Bootcamp:

“In the past, there were a lot of DIY projects for acne that were doing more harm than good, but now skincare is more focused on creating a healthy skin barrier, which is essential to healing acne,” said Justina. “For teens to learn more about preventative and protective care, I highly recommend them to see a corrective skincare specialist to educate them about lifestyle and skincare.”

Justina’s passion for making a difference in the lives of those struggling with skin challenges is evident in her commitment to educating and guiding clients on their journey to healthier skin. The journey doesn’t stop at the grocery aisles. Omega Mart spans four giant themed areas, each designed by a diverse group of more than 325 artists and collaborators from Las Vegas and around the globe. These anchor spaces transition into surreal landscapes, from alien terrains to mystical portals, providing a continuous stream of visual and sensory surprises. Every corner of Omega Mart holds a new discovery.

Whether your pup has the obedience of a dog show finalist, or social behavior that makes you want to play dead around others, you can develop more owner confidence with help from this expert trainer.

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”

Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “That, in turn, fosters an environment where the next time a family hosts Thanksgiving or has friends over, the owner and their dogs fall into the habit of obeying commands because of the confidence built through all the work put in beforehand.”

Even dogs with a troubled history can achieve improvement.

“We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.

• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it , but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.

• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.

DOG

SOCIALIZING TIPS:

• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.

• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.

Once your dog is able to socialize with other pets, playdates are a great way to encourage good play behavior. One way to celebrate your pup’s birthday is to celebrate with their favorite furry friends. Here are a few helpful tips for making your gathering a success.

• Set up play areas for your furry guests to enjoy. This can include a doggy pool or splash pad, chew toys, frisbees, and don’t forget the pet-friendly bubbles.

• Offer party guests birthday attire such as a birthday hat, bandana or party outfit. Set up a photo wall for pet owners to get photos with their furry friends in their birthday outfits. Better yet, make it a costume competition, and invite guests to come dressed up ready to show off their pup’s attire.

• Create a treat display with a pet-friendly birthday cake and various chewy snacks for guests to give their pups.

• Party favors are a must to end your festivities with a bang. Fill party bags with bouncy balls, treats, and pet-friendly bubbles to send your guests off with a smile.

HOW TO THROW A BIRTHDAY BASH FOR YOUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS:

W A T C H THEM GROW

The days are long, but the years go fast. So they say with raising children. I have to agree with that sentiment. Each year as summer ends I find myself looking at my kids and reminding myself to “Watch them grow!” Both as a reminder to not miss the growth (with all the distractions and responsibilities that adult life brings) but also as reflection on how far they’ve come since the last time we turned the calendar page to August. Whether there are children in your life or not, I’m sure we can all agree that childhood is fleeting. Instead of stopping to smell the roses, I need to remind myself to “stop and watch them grow”—you can’t see it if you stare, but you’ll surely miss it if you blink! It helps me to set aside intentional time to be present with these fast little growers.

For us that looks like setting a special table to spend time sharing (or drawing) how we’ve seen them grow over the summer before jumping back into school routines. Making DIY game boards together and then having a family game night. Making snow cones for an after-dinner treat or, for a bigger wow factor, for breakfast! They will never forget that one, I promise. (Psst! my snow cones are made with fruit juice so it’s Mommy approved too!)

As August rolls in and the calendar tells us that it’s time for back-to-school shopping, the weather does not usually agree that the times are changing. I find that it’s such

a weird dance between what looks like the change of seasons when I open my calendar but not when I walk out my back door (heat wave!). On one hand, we’re still in full throttle of blazing temperatures in the Midwest and with no end in sight. At the same time, being thrown into back-to-school shopping, Meet-the-Teacher nights, resuming the regiment of packing school lunches, and if you’re a homeschool parent, all the to-do lists and lesson plans in order to launch into another school year. As we find ourselves

with one foot in summer and the other in a classroom, how do we embrace and (dare I say) celebrate this month? Instead of feeling ungrounded in the juxtaposition of August, I am inviting myself, and anyone who would join me, to embrace the opportunity to celebrate the in-between seasons that this month brings. My hope is that these ideas help spark your imagination on how to keep you cool in the heat, launch your kiddos into a new school year, and to set aside time to watch them grow.

DIY GAME BOARDS

Welcome more play into your life with this little DIY project. At our house we like to keep outdoor game boards around for short moments together as well as full blown game nights. These game boards are meant to be kept outside but could also be brought indoors as well.

Materials

• Pebbles for Checkers, 24 similar sized

• Small stones for Tic-Tac-Toe, 8 similar sized

• Acrylic paints (black, red, yellow and white)

• Paint brush

• Raw wooden boards + black paint marker

• Reclaimed wood + black acrylic paint

• Polycrylic spray

Instructions

1. Game Pieces: Paint your rocks with acrylic paint. For Tic-Tac-Toe you’ll need a total of 8 rocks, 4 of each type (here I’ve painted 4 lady bugs and 4 bumble bees). For Checkers you’ll need a total of 24 rocks, 12 of each color (here I’ve used black stones, painting half of them red).

2. Game Board: For raw wood (such as our TicTac-Toe board), use a ruler and black paint marker to create board lines. For reclaimed or treated wood, use paint. Let game pieces and game boards fully dry. Seal with a polycrylic spray for protection from heat and moisture.

SNOW CONES

We adore snow cones at our house! If you’ve been to our house then we’ve probably served them to you. A shaved ice machine makes it oh-so-easy! You can purchase premade snow cone syrup flavors or make your own healthier version by using fruit juice concentrates. Simply thaw the frozen fruit juice concentrate and put the liquid into squeezy bottles for an easy way to pour over shaved ice.

Assemble

• Ice, lots of ice!

• Snow Cone Machine

• Snow Cone Cups

• Snow Cone Straws

• Snow Cone Syrups (or frozen juice concentrates, thawed)

Use a snow cone machine to shave ice into snow cone cups. Top with your favorite flavor—either store bought snow cone syrups, homemade syrups, or our favorite—fruit concentrates. Stay cool and celebrate the last days of summer heat!

GOING

We’re saying goodbye to plastic wrap, Ziploc bags and aluminum foil, and hello to reusable wax food wraps you can wrap around anything your hungry (or full) heart desires.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN REUSABLE WAX FOOD WRAPS IN 4 EASY STEPS

GREEN

SUPPLIES:

• Beeswax beads

• Fabric

• Pinking shears

• Parchment paper

• Baking sheet

INSTRUCTIONS:

01. PREHEAT your oven to its lowest setting.

02. CUT FABRIC into desired shapes. Using pinking shears so the fabric doesn’t fray, you can cut your fabric into any shape or size you’d like. Consider what size or shape of food you store the most and use that as a guide.

03. PREP + MELT. Cover your baking sheet with parchment paper and place the cut fabric on top. Sprinkle with beeswax beads and place in the oven to allow beeswax to melt for 5-10 minutes.

04. KEEP IT COOL. Remove fabric from baking sheet (careful, it’s hot!) and allow wax to harden and cool.

FOR REUSE, wash in cool water (you don’t want the wax to melt!) with mild dish soap and let air dry.
