Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something and that resonates with us. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship.
Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, experiences and people in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. What better way to celebrate local love than thanking those who do just that? Here are some of our partners for the 2022 Best of Potomac Holiday Awards Party we're grateful for...

First-time visitors to the Commonwealth Indian Restaurant located in North Bethesda’s Pike and Rose development are in for a surprise: owner Sunil Bastola has decorated the restaurant in a stunning, unique style. Walls with gold motifs, some with a herringbone design, adorn the rooms. You can spot two-dimensional Bengal tigers playing on the walls while a huge flowered peacock in a garden greets you on another wall, And don’t miss the sculptures in glass cases.
The restaurant boasts a 100-seat dining room and a bar replete with velveteen-upholstered chairs. And if you are in the mood for a cocktail Commonwealth Indian offers a menu of classic drinks and spirits, but the “One Night in Bombay” special was a big hit among our group of diners. According
to Trina Cox “This drink had cilantro and jalapeno that gave it just a wonderful kick. It’s a ‘melt-in-your-mouth’ drink. You should definitely come and have some.”
Appetizers include vegetable samosas, a crowd favorite. The samosas are a good size and filled with vegetables and enclosed in a light, flaky crust. The coastal shrimp was another popular choice of appetizer. The fried shrimp are sauteed in a special house dressing -- it’s spicy but delicious. Finally, the mango avocado salad is another appetizer that includes mixed greens and a delicious cumin dressing.
The traditional naan was very tasty, both the plain and the garlic. Servers are quick to fill water glasses and Pratap, who was assigned to our table, was especially attentive and helpful.
ARTICLE BY MARIE ROBEY WOOD, SARAH REZVANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANKIT SHARMA AND SANDRO VICTORIANO"Although I visited India in the past I am not very familiar with Indian food, hence my choice of the yellow crab curry. I am so happy I chose it! Large chunks of lump crabmeat floated in a rich curry sauce. It was seasoned just right and I would love to order it again."
“I can always count on finding something vegan on the menu in an Indian restaurant. I really enjoyed Commonwealth India’s dish of chickpeas, cauliflower, and spinach with a spicy, curry sauce.”
“Although I don’t go out to eat Indian food very often, after coming here I will definitely “go Indian” more than I used to. This restaurant is beautiful, the food is great, and the service is terrific! The chunks of chicken in my butter chicken dish were big and fresh and perfectly seasoned.”
Trina enjoyed the restaurant’s lamb rogan josh which she described as “super tasty and very tender, The lamb almost fell off the bone with a nice, succulent Indian flavor that melts in your mouth. Just delectable.” Finally, there is always room for dessert and offerings of different ice cream flavors as well as a delicate creme brulee topped off an outstanding Valentine’s Day meal for all of us.
Patrons visiting Lao Sze Chuan Restaurant situated in North Bethesda will enjoy a warm welcome on arrival and upon passing through stately double doors, enter into a modern and sophisticated setting with soaring ceilings. The impressively expansive interior boasts a dining room for both intimate dining and large parties, as well as a sumptuous bar; all complete with deep, velvet seating, sultry decor of rich dark hues and we haven’t even gotten to the food.
The menu featured an appealing array of wines and select beers, but it was the craft cocktails that dazzled. Literally, the Jade Empress lavender lychee martini sparkled with edible glitter as did the lime garnish that topped the popular Golden Tiger.
The marbled table featured an ingenious design – a spinning centerpiece (aka lazy Susan) – that allows parties to try every dish including the LSC Four Flavorful Cold Dish Platter which expands the palette into exotic tasting territory, staples such as the Shanghai Vegetable Spring Roll and a memorable favorite, the Never Forget Chicken.
After appetizers and seeing nearby diners being served by our genteel waiter Randy accompanied by robots, we were treated to the Peking Duck presented by Chef Lin Yong himself. A Hong Kong-style cut, the duck is oven-roasted for sixty-eight minutes to melt the fat, leaving the skin crispy and meat juicy.
After a superior 3-course meal and plans to return in future for dessert, our group heartily agreed that Lao Sze Chaun is the place to go for authentic Sichuan fare.
“Just wow! This soup was a perfect balance of fresh and spicy. It instantly caught my attention when reading the menu and it truly did not disappoint. This dish is unforgettable and for me, the highlight of the night. I cannot wait return to share this with more friends and family.”
“The deep-fried chicken with scallion and fried garlic was absolutely delicious. The moment I bit into the chicken I was delighted with a burst of flavor. It was juicy, flavorful, and the skin was cooked to a perfect crisp. I would 10 out of 10 recommend this dish and Lao Sze Chaun for anyone looking for date ideas this Valentine’s day.”
“I was surprised when the dish arrived at my table in flames! It made the experience very exciting. The presentation of the flaming dish was just as wonderful as the taste. And the meat literally comes right off the bone.”
“I’m always one for a story and loved the tale of the over 1,000-yearold recipe and preparation for the duck. It’s my favorite fowl and the bite-size bits of crisp skin paired with brown sugar was a treat for my taste buds.”

Nurit was born in Kiryat, Israel, at a point when military and political strife were high. Growing up, she found herself in an abusive relationship with her angry father and found peace hiding under the lobby staircase in the apartment building where her family lived. She left home for good at 15 years old, and with a determination beyond her years, she worked cleaning houses to support her way through high school. After graduation, she joined the Israeli Army and quickly rose through the ranks, excelling at dangerous and highly technical explosives work. Her experiences led her from Israel to the Pentagon and the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. While in DC, she went to school at the University of Maryland, where she met her husband and found a permanent home in North Bethesda. Here, she built one of the most influential and successful real estate enterprises on the East Coast. The challenges she faced early in life gave her a unique gift of empathy toward others going through difficult or stressful life experiences, like the process of finding a home.

Alex Martinez grew up learning about the real estate business from his grandparents in Guatemala. He sometimes got to ride along with his grandfather who owned a number of rental properties. Alex observed as his grandfather frequently was admonished by his grandmother for being too lenient in rent collections. While he would not know it for many years later, Alex was fortunate to inherit both his grandfather’s sense of generosity and his grandmother’s business savvy. Alex left Guatemala with his twin brother when he was 16 years old. In search of a distant uncle who lived in the U.S., Alex found himself in our area with no English skills and very little hope for a promising future. Determined to build a new life here, he found a sense of community in a local church and learned he could take English classes at Montgomery College. It was at MC that he discovered classes in real estate. Driven to improve himself and help others, he found early success and bought his first home at just 21 years old (a house he still owns). His success built over the years, and he joined forces with Nurit to establish The Agency DC - a real estate business powerhouse that the Wall Street Journal named #1 in Maryland last year and #14 in all of the U.S.

created an unstoppable drive for success in business powered by a larger purpose. The engine that drives them is family and community. “Nurit does not hire people”, a member of her team told me. “She adopts them!” What she and Alex have created here is a business that seeks to create community by bringing people together and finding success by helping them reach their goals.
Their efforts to build community reach all of us. Homeownership in our area isn’t always easy, but Nurit and Alex, with the force of The Agency behind them, make the dream possible every single day. Mauricio Umansky, CEO and founder of The Agency is proud of the partnership and the fact that the values they cherish are so obviously reflected in Nurit and Alex.
One of many examples of those values in action is explained here. Fredy Donado started working for Alex when he was 17. “He hired me as an assistant. I was from a lower income family, just starting out, and he gave me a chance. He mentored me,
pushed me, and supported me in growing as an individual and a part of the team. Because of him and Nurit, I own my own home and three rental properties and am mentoring other young people eager to find purpose.”
The echoes of Alex and Nurit’s commitment show up throughout our community. Theirs was the first real estate firm ever to partner with Habitat for Humanity. They are widely known for community clean-ups and sponsorships of everything from local swim teams to this very magazine. “The Agency is all about giving back,” Alex told me. “And our efforts have come back to our business in big ways.” Their stories, embedded in the story of The Agency, are now a Netflix series. What a fantastic journey.
One that is reflected beautifully in the Burkowski poem’s final words, “You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It’s the only good fight there is.”
THE AGENCY IS NOW STREAMING ON
Pets have become an important part of the American family. Pet Dental Health Month was created to draw attention to serious health issues caused by dental problems. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS), by the time pets reach the age of three, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats will have active dental disease. Dr. Mari from Veterinary Park Potomac explains this to families as they bring their pets in for annual check-ups. First, she explains that dogs and cats have baby teeth! These usually fall out on their own and are replaced by permanent teeth, which typically happens when your pet is five or six months old. She adds that cats have 30 teeth and dogs have 42. And she reminds everyone that cats and smallbreed dogs have more dental problems than large-breed dogs.
Dr. Mari realizes that most people think of the physical aspects of an annual check-up when taking their pet to the vet. We’re used to seeing our veterinary team note our pet’s weight, stance, and gait. There’s the peek in the eyes and ears, and the listening to the heart and lungs. The doctor moves on to look at the feet and nails, as well as to assess the overall condition of the coat and skin. If we’re paying close attention, we might even notice the doctor feeling around to check the internal organs as well as for signs of swelling or pain.
After that, the doctor is likely to move onto the mouth. With a quick look, the doctor can assess plaque build-up. Simply put: plaque is filled with bacteria and bacteria creates bad breath! Next, your vet will likely check your pet’s teeth and gums for redness, bleeding, and inflammation.
One step further is a check for any missing, cracked, or damaged teeth.
Depending on the age of your pet, the doctor will probably recommend a full dental cleaning. This type of appointment is scheduled for another day so your pet can be fasted first. The dental cleaning is performed with your pet under anesthesia, but it is still considered an outpatient procedure.
How does this work? Dr. Mari explains that on the morning of the dental cleaning, your vet will collect bloodwork and perform a pre-anesthetic exam to make sure the pet is healthy enough to undergo the procedure. After that, the anesthesia is given and your pet will be asleep for the duration of the dental cleaning. Similar to a human dental cleaning appointment, the vet will then take x-rays, clean the teeth to remove tartar and plaque, and then repair or remove any damaged teeth. A nice polish and sealant treatment is the final stage of the exam.
Between annual exams, Dr. Mari recommends brushing your pet’s teeth three to four times a week. Brushing is a habit that is easier to initiate when your pet is young. Your veterinary team can help you get started or you can find some great videos, resources, and tools on the website of the American Veterinary Medical Association (avma.org). The website for the Veterinary Oral Health Council (vohc. org) also provides a variety of helpful resources, including a list of accepted products for pets. The list includes a variety of dental diet products, rawhide chews, edible chew treats, water additives, oral gel and sprays, toothpastes, toothbrushes, and more.
Trips to the vet can be filled with anxiety for your pet. The team at Veterinary Park Potomac has made great efforts to create a peaceful and calm atmosphere for you and your pets. Come visit to learn more about their emphasis on personal care and comfort. Find details at: VeterinaryParkPotomac.com
Dr. Katie Malehorn opened Veterinary Park Potomac in September 2021 after working in various DC-area veterinary hospitals, in both Primary Care and Emergency Medicine. Dr. Katie wanted to create a facility that was small enough to offer a community feel but large enough to have the technology and services that would allow her to respond quickly to the needs of her clients.
“According to the AVDS, by the time pets reach the age of three, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats will have active dental disease.”
1 Diet needs for your pet will be based on age, breed, medical condition, and activity level.
2 Weight concerns can shorten a pet’s life by contributing to a variety of health problems.
3 Exercise keeps your pet limber and reduces behavioral problems.
4 Preventative Care can help your pet live a longer, healthier, and happier life. Annual exams are a vital part of your pet’s overall health.
5 Dental Care is now a crucial part of your pet’s overall health. Make sure to follow your vet’s recommendations for regular brushing and annual exams.
Dr. Katie recently welcomed Dr. Mariana Fonseca to the practice. Dr. Mari is originally from Brazil, and graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida. She has been a practicing veterinarian in the DC-area for the past eight years, working in large vet hospitals. In addition to providing quality care, Dr. Mari
invests in educating families about how to provide good care to their pets. With each family visit, Dr. Mari attempts to cover the five areas highlighted in the sidebar to the right: diet, weight, exercise, preventative care, and dental care. Dr. Mari and her partner, Steve, enjoy an active life with Bambino (chihuahua) and Yogi (shepherd mix).
The Only Four Star Resort on Maryland’s Eastern Shore
Perhaps the most challenging aspect of staying at The Inn at Perry Cabin is what to choose among its countless offerings of fun, dining, and activities. Nestled along the Chesapeake Bay in the charming town of St. Michael’s on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the Inn occupies 26 acres overlooking the Miles River. One option would be to shed one’s luggage and join other guests at 5 p.m. at the Inn’s Pointe. There you can toast the flag out front with a glass of cheer, echoing the Navy battle cry of the War of 1812: “Don’t Give Up the Ship.”
Following this daily ritual you can relax with a drink on the patio with a fire pit or sit in one of the many Adirondack chairs enjoying the calming waterfront. The spectacular view was captured in “The Wedding Crashers” movie, an unforgettable scene of hijinks taking place in the Inn’s elegant setting. You may spot geese and ducks while there, or even an egret or bald eagle. According to Michael B. Hoffman, the managing director of the Inn, “There’s something unique to see in every cove.”
If you’re hungry for a light dinner you can wander over to the Inn’s casual Purser’s Pub and sample pub favorites before retiring to your room, enjoying the old-world charm of the rooms that offer the amenities of a modern hotel.
The following day is when hard decisions must be made: Do you participate in a tennis match on one of the Inn’s green Har-Tru courts, try out the pool, enjoy croquet and bocce, or enjoy the charms of the spa with its offerings of luxurious massages and facials, a steam room and even nail services? And don’t forget the fitness center with its state-of-the-art equipment. The Inn offers tours of its lush gardens where guests can enjoy viewing Perry Cabin’s many hydrangeas, Crepe myrtle trees, wildflowers, native plant species, and more.
In addition to all the activities listed above the Inn offers two other outstanding features: fine dining and golf on a magnificent course.
The culinary offerings of the Inn make it a destination in and of itself. In addition to the aforementioned Purser’s Pub, the Inn boasts the area’s only four-star restaurant, aptly named Stars. Like the pub it’s located inside the main building, but has seating outside as well.
Gregory James, the Inn’s executive chef, has been there since 2019 using his experience and expertise to create an entirely new guest dining experience. He has won countless accolades and awards during his 30 years in the culinary business. In 2022 he received the
“Chef of the Year” award from the Restaurant Association of Maryland.
Chef Greg is a strong believer in using ingredients sourced locally— including seafood from local waterways, regional dairy farm cheese, neighboring vegetable gardens, as well as the Inn’s very own bounty. The well-regarded chef focuses on a sustainable approach to modern cuisine – once oysters are used the shells get thrown back into the bay. PHOTOGRAPHY BY HOWARD LANSAT, JACK HARTZMAN, AND RICARDO REYESIn the Fall of 2015, Dipka Bhambhani, now senior advisor to ExxonMobil’s public and government affairs team and senior Forbes contributor, summoned the most fateful meeting of her life. John W. Hesse II, now a partner at Ivan Adler & Associates, requested her back to Washington for a job interview some months later.
For Ms. Bhambhani, the job didn’t feel quite right, but the connection between them was a different story.
She liked that Mr. Hesse was calm, knowledgeable and put her at ease. He liked her energy. He still calls her a light and a breath of fresh air. In the Fall of 2020, five years after they met, Mr. Hesse asked Ms. Bhambhani to dinner, and she finally said yes; he had asked her in 2017, but at the time she said no. In the Fall of 2021, he proposed. John W. Hesse, II, now a partner at Ivan Adler & Associates, summoned her back to Washington for a job interview some months later.
On August 27, 2022, the couple wed in a rustic slash traditional Hindu ceremony at the ISKON temple in Potomac, Maryland. It was a Hindu wedding performed by a Nepali priest sprinkled with Indo-Celtic elements.
The bride’s mini British-style bridesmaids walked down the aisle to IndoCeltic music assembled by composer Kanniks Kannikeswaran. The bride marched in alongside her bridesmaids to Santih, a piece sung by English Sanskrit singer, Gaiea Sanskrit. Though Hesse, a lawyer and lobbyist, is often seen wearing several hats around town, he wore only one on his wedding day—a pagri. The bride, originally from Houston and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is still shocked she married a Yankee, while the groom, a New Jersey native, just feels lucky she did.
As the sun set, the bride and groom celebrated their reception at the Intercontinental Hotel at the Wharf in Washington DC. with music by Encore and photography by Jack Hartzman, Howard Lansat and Ricardo Reyes. Ms. Bhambhani sought a job, but Mr. Hesse gave her a ring and now this couple begins their lives together as one.

Many couples celebrate Valentine’s Day, but what about the other 364 days of the year? How can couples keep the relationship romance going all year round?
“A relationship cannot be like the ‘Elf on the Shelf’,” Julie Bulitt says. “You can’t just bring it out on Valentine’s Day, birthdays or anniversaries and forget about it during the rest of the year. Your relationship needs to be front and center every day.”
“People ask me all the time,” David Bulitt says, “‘what is the biggest reason that couples break up?’ Most think it is due to financial reasons, maybe problems with kids or infidelity. In my experience, it’s ‘none of the above.’ What happens to couples is that they wake up and go about their days — be it jobs, kids, other responsibilities— then they eat and go to sleep. Day in and day out. Wash, rinse, repeat. Before you know it the couple doesn’t know each other very well and have little in common. I call it ‘malaise creep’.”
The Bulitts say the key to keeping a relationship alive and healthy is to apply what they call “The Three C’s”— communication, connection, and consistency. Ask yourself each day: Did I communicate with my partner? Did I connect with my partner? Am I doing that consistently?
“A relationship takes work,” Julie says. “If you don’t put in the work, it’s going to fail.”
“You should think about your relationship like you do your job or your business — set goals, check in on them, and work toward reaching them,” David says. “All year long.
Julie and David Bulitt, a therapist and family lawyer respectively, are also couples coaches, speakers, and the authors of the award-winning book, “The Five Core Conversations for Couples.” Their second book is due to be published in the fall of 2023. They can be reached at thebulitts.com .
Here are some guideposts to help couples navigate tough conversations, taken straight from the Bulitts’ book:
key.
Pick a time when your partner is available and likely to be attentive.
| It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.
Your tone and how you choose your words are often as important as what you’re trying to communicate.
Let your partner know they are heard.
Here are a few kick-starters to get you talking:
1. What aspect of your relationship needs more attention?
2. When was the last time you got angry with your partner? What did you do about it?
3. Do you feel appreciated in your relationship? Do you express your appreciation for your partner? How so?
And remember, you are on the same team!
