I’m not a dog mom, but I play one on Instagram

It's our 2024 Kids and Pets issue, which means it's also confession time for me again. A bit of background:

As I begrudgingly admitted in the publisher's letter I wrote for our 2023 Kids and Pets issue, there was a time in the not so distant past when I was  not a dog person. My parents' dog, Lincoln, changed all of that. While I wouldn't yet call myself a full-blown dog lover, there's now ample space in my heart for our four-legged friends where there really wasn't before. I might have even let out an audible “Awww!” when our editor, Becca, first sent me the proof of this month’s cover shot.

Kids and babies, on the other hand? Different story. I’ve loved children my whole life, and despite choosing not to be a mom, I'm blessed to be an auntie to six nieces and nephews who bring me so much joy, love, and pride on a daily basis...and let's not forget the laughter. As most of us have experienced, there's no shortage of things that small humans will say and do to keep us in stitches.

So here's the confession: My lifelong love of kids, my growing affection for dogs, and my obsession with the unique form of comedy only kids and pets can bring have recently culminated in an unexpected time-sucking guilty pleasure— watching funny dog and baby reels on social media (bonus points if it's babies and dogs together). Um, what? How did this happen? Who am I?

Apparently I’m now the person who’s not only enthusiastic about viral baby and dog videos, but is also excited to bring you this month’s issue. So please indulge me by staying off your phone for a few, and turning the pages for all things kids and pets in Portland and beyond.

And if you see me on the street late for a meeting and staring at my screen in puppy and baby oblivion on IG, please send help! I may need an intervention.

THE OLDEST CHILDREN’S THEATRE IN THE NATION CELEBRATES 101 SEASONS

When the Children’s Theatre of Maine was founded by the Junior League of Portland in 1924, the average cost of a house was just $7,720, and a car sold for only $265. A century later, the organization—the oldest children’s theater in the nation—is celebrating its 101st consecutive season. “The Children’s Theatre has had all these different incarnations, but what’s really cool is that it’s kept a legacy alive,” says Reba Askari, Theatre Artistic Director. “Our current location on Thompson’s Point is the culmination of a hundred-year dream, and our 101st season is a tribute to this legacy and the home that we’ve found.”

This season’s programming reflects the organization’s core values: belonging, trust, play, curiosity, and community. “The common thread between the shows is the idea of being playful in your life and how play can help you make friends, explore your identity, and embrace any challenges you’re facing,” Askari explains. In the first half of the season, audiences can watch a wacky adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood that turns the well-known story on its head, see the museum’s Beautiful Blackbird exhibit come to life onstage, and observe a version of Winnie the Pooh that features a Pooh puppet helping Christopher Robin adjust to a difficult move from the countryside to the city. After the new year, catch Pete the Cat , a rockand-roll cat who teaches his family the importance of creativity, and learn the story of Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress , based on the children’s book about a young boy who dreams of being an astronaut wearing a tangerine dress.

Accessibility is a priority at the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine (CMTM) and is woven into the organization's fabric from the inside out. CMTM offers two performances of every production with sign language

interpreters, and there’s a soundproof viewing gallery in the back of the theatre for children who need to resettle or prefer a different sensory experience. “Sitting in a theatre can be daunting for people, and we just want to make everyone as comfortable as possible,” says Askari.

CMTM offers three categories of performances: theatre for young audiences, which features professional adult actors from the community performing for children; intergenerational shows, where kids and adults act on stage together; and young theater ensembles, which are the culmination of the organization’s classes that teach creative youth how to write and put on an original play. “Adult actors are ready to roll with whatever a young audience is going to throw at them, and they put on a lot of weekday performances for school audiences,” Askari explains. “Intergenerational shows emphasize the process, so we look for actors who are ready to be mentors and role models in the rehearsal room, and youth ensembles focus on teamwork, education, and the social-emotional language of theatre.”

CMTM’s Youth Playwriting Festival offers young playwrights an opportunity to share their work and be a part of the playwriting process from concept to stage. At the latest festival, ten plays from workshop attendees and youth submissions across southern Maine were selected, workshopped, and performed. “It was beautiful to watch everything come together. In addition to creating amazing performances, we cultivated this deep community experience,” says Askari. The annual event and the 101st season’s programming continue the legacy of the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine while looking toward the next century.

“Our current location on Thompson’s Point is the culmination of a hundred-year dream, and our 101st season is a tribute to this legacy and the home that we’ve found.”

PLAY THE DAY AWAY

OUR FAVORITE OUT-OF-THE-BOX CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES ACROSS SOUTHERN MAINE

“Playing is a kid’s most important job,” says Laura Petrolino, founder and owner of MEPowered Pastries, a kid-focused bakery and learning studio in Scarborough. “There is nothing more magical than watching a kid explore a new activity or experience and how their phenomenal brains come alive with curiosity, discovery, and new understanding about themselves and the world around them,” she adds. Across southern Maine, a variety of businesses provide unique, creative learning opportunities for children of all ages. Whether your child prefers getting active, unleashing their creativity, or exploring the environment, they’re sure to love these fun activities in and around Portland.

Climbing comes naturally to children, and this stimulating activity allows kids to express themselves through movement while building confidence. Youth climbing programs give kids a place to solve problems, work together, explore calculated risks, and learn that we all fall on our way to the top. Salt Pump offers camps, after-school programs, climbing teams, and drop-in visits. saltpumpclimbing.com

What better way to experience the arts than by painting pottery and letting your imagination soar? Color Me Mine provides a forum for kids to express their creativity and have fun in a pressure-free environment. Great for birthday parties, rainy days, and painting presents for mom and dad (don’t forget the grandparents!), the studio offers walk-in painting hours in addition to scheduled events. portland.colormemine.com

Plus, it’s tons of fun! Classes are available for kids ages 1-14. mainewarriorgym.com

Part of the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company and Museum, the Ice Cream Train is the perfect way to spend a summer evening with the family. Hop on board the historic steam or diesel train for a 40-minute scenic ride along Casco Bay with a complimentary ice cream treat in hand. The Ice Cream Train runs every Friday in August at 6 pm and 7 pm. mainenarrowgauge.org

TERRARIUM

Some kids just really like getting dirty, and visiting a garden center and workspace for build-your-own terrarium creations where it’s totally okay to make a mess is exactly what they need. Owners Anna and Rob Sinnott know just how to get kids excited about plants (and bugs) while guiding them in creating a tiny, enclosed ecosystem to take home. terrariumportlandme.com

A nonprofit organization that supports sailing at the community level, SailMaine offers youth summer programs to help junior sailors learn the basics of sailing and develop respect for Casco Bay’s marine environment. Programs are designed for youngsters to improve their confidence while gaining skills and creating lasting friendships. Sessions fill up quickly, so keep an eye out for next summer’s registration dates. sailmaine.org

EVEN KEEL

The pets of Casco Bay are in good hands with Dr. Kate Domenico

ARTICLE BY
ABRAMSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN LEAR

It’s a sunny late spring day when I meet Dr. Kate Domenico and her crew at Aspasia Marina in South Portland to board the 27-foot converted lobster boat known as Rita Joan . Though it may look like we’re getting ready to spend a leisurely day cruising around Casco Bay, our agenda is a bit different. Dr. Domenico, who works a full-time job in the Emergency and Critical Care department at Portland Veterinary Emergency (not to mention her position as Veterinary Medical Officer for the National Veterinary Response Team of the Department of Health and Human Services, her role as a lead instructor for the Portland’s Working

Canine Medical Skills course, or her post as President of the Maine Veterinary Medical Association) provides veterinary care to the island communities of Casco Bay as the head of Island Veterinary Service (IVS), and today, we’re along for the ride.

Founded in 2003 by veterinarian Dr. John Flood, who retired in 2022, IVS is an essential part of island life for pet owners. In the winter months, Dr. Domenico, who joined the practice in 2019, operates a monthly clinic at the Peaks Island Community Center. Throughout the summer, she makes weekly visits to Peaks, Little

Diamond, Great Diamond, Cushing, Long, Cliff, and Chebeague Islands, and she even makes house calls if owners or their pets can’t make it to the boat.

IVS is a unique operation that combines two of Dr. Domenico’s top interests: animals and boating. “I grew up sailing on Lake Michigan, so I’ve been interested in boats since I was a child,” the Chicago native explains. “My love of animals probably started around the same time—I’ve had pets my entire life.” As we pull up to the public dock next to the Casco Bay Lines ferry, Dr. Domenico,

“I’m always looking to expand IVS and serve more islands in Maine. My hope for the future is to dedicate the majority of my time to our beloved island pets and families.”

her vet tech Elspeth Pennell, and a vet tech assistant named Sandy hop off to secure the boat and set up shop. Dr. Domenico runs through her schedule—she has a handful of appointments on the Peaks Island dock followed by a house call this afternoon—before unloading a battery-powered scale and some folding chairs. Aboard the Rita Joan , she has everything necessary to perform routine wellness exams, sick visits, blood draws, vaccines, and palliative care for the animals of the islands. “We can do most everything a typical vet does except x-rays, and procedures that

“The most rewarding part of working with IVS is the

built with the island families. Islanders have different challenges compared to those who live on the mainland— these communities work together to help each other, and that extends to their pets.”

require anesthesia like surgeries or dental treatments,” Dr. Domenico explains.

As her first patient, a small black and white dog, walks down the gangway with its owner, Dr. Domenico tells me she has plenty to be thankful for. “The people who live on the islands are so special, and the way they all work together is amazing,” she says. It’s clear that the islanders appreciate Dr. Domenico’s services, as every client who visits the Rita Joan seems deeply invested in how the vet and her team are doing. Though Dr. Domenico is only able to dedicate part of her time to IVS currently, she intends to one day expand her services to include the islands of midcoast Maine. “I’m always looking to serve more islands,” she says, “and my hope for the future is to dedicate the majority of my time to our beloved island pets and families.”

BUSY SCHEDULE? NO WORRIES— FURRY LAND MOBILE GROOMING BRINGS THE PET SALON RIGHT TO YOUR DOOR

Animal lover and entrepreneur Andrea Cahill is on a mission to make dog grooming convenient for the pet owners of southern Maine. No longer will you need to wrangle your dog into the car, drive to the groomer, drop your pet off, and wait hours before returning to pick them up: Furry Land Mobile Grooming of Southern Maine, Cahill’s latest venture, will drive

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ANDREA CAHILL

a professional grooming set-up right to your residence. “People like things easy now, and who doesn’t want someone to just drive up and groom their dog?” Cahill laughs. The owner of two Wheaten Terrier poodles (affectionately called whoodles), Cahill understands exactly how much time and energy mobile grooming can save Mainers. “It’s a big convenience thing,” she explains. “Oftentimes,

groomers will keep a dog for hours, but with us, your dog is only in the van as long as they need to be groomed. As soon as they’re done, we bring them right back to your front door.”

Efficiency isn’t the only benefit of Furry Land’s mobile grooming, which occurs in one of two Mercedes Sprinter vans. Pet owners can work from home while their dog is being groomed, dogs

“IT’S A CONVENIENCE THING—WHO DOESN’T WANT SOMEONE TO JUST DRIVE UP AND GROOM THEIR DOG?”

who dislike like riding in the car don’t need to endure a trip to the groomer, and if a dog is elderly or doesn’t get along with other dogs, there’s no need to worry, as they’ll be the only animal in the van. Plus, clients can get more one-on-one time with Furry Land’s three groomers than they might with a typical groomer. “We have one client who found evidence that her last groomer abused her sweet golden retriever,” Cahill recalls. “Our lead groomer Shelby went out of her way

to make the client feel comfortable and even had her come out to the van and watch while her dog was being groomed.”

While Furry Land is a national franchise, Cahill emphasizes that her business is locally owned and operated. “We have an automated texting system, but half the time when you’re texting us, I’m the one messaging back,” she notes. “Maine is a great place for small businesses, and I’m looking forward to partnering with and supporting other locals.” In the future,

Cahill hopes to help shelter dogs and pet owners who may not have the financial means to get their animals groomed regularly. Her passion for pets is evident in the way she discusses the business and the satisfaction she gets from meeting other animal lovers in Maine. “We have people fill out an intake form before grooming, and it makes me so happy to see photos of the dogs and read about their stories—you can really tell how much people here love their pets,” Cahill says.
