Thanks to the guidance of Olsson Engineering reps, students used straws and tape to put their skills to the test in a hands-on competition. 40 YEARS OF LEADERSHIP PLANO Members of Leadership Plano Class 40 (The Best Class Ever!)

Forty years ago, visionary leaders in Plano recognized that dynamic growth was imminent. They determined that, to prepare for this growth, they needed to recruit and train men and women with diverse perspectives who were prepared to address issues critical to Plano’s future.

Leadership Plano grew from that vision.

Over the years, more than 1,200 individuals have graduated from the program, with many taking on significant community leadership roles. Leadership Plano is dedicated to educating, developing, and empowering current and future leaders for the community, motivating them to serve civic, charitable, and business organizations, according to its mission statement.

Kelle Marsalis, President/CEO of the Plano Chamber of Commerce, says, "Leadership Plano is the flagship leadership program for the Plano Chamber. Our business investors value the leadership training and community engagement it provides to established and up-and-coming leaders within their companies. The Plano Chamber is proud of the immense impact Leadership Plano has had on Plano and our greater region for more than 40 years."

Leadership Plano graduates serve on the Plano City Council, including Mayor John Muns and City Manager Mark Israelson. Of the seven Plano ISD Board of Trustees, four are alumni of Leadership Plano, including Board President Nancy Humphrey and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Theresa Williams. Leadership Plano alumni also serve as executive directors and board members of many local nonprofit organizations, putting the skills they learned into action.

Dr. Theresa Williams, Plano Superintendent of Schools, said, "Leadership Plano was a transformative experience for me. I gained essential leadership insights, an expanded network, and community

knowledge, which have been invaluable in my leadership journey from Deputy Superintendent to Superintendent. Now, I am thrilled to give back to the community as a Leadership Plano alum and board member."

Sam Johnson, Chair of the Leadership Plano Advisory Board, said, "Recruitment for the program is a year-round activity. We seek individuals who are committed to Plano’s service and business communities and who want to learn more about Plano. We aim for a diverse pool of applicants who are willing and able to dedicate the time and effort required to gain the skills necessary to become future leaders."

Through eight full-day, monthly class sessions, Leadership Plano introduces class members to the community and its leaders, including city and school district officials, business executives, leaders of healthcare and public safety institutions, and regional and state leaders. The final session, entitled "Servant Leadership," introduces dozens of nonprofit organizations serving Plano, helping class members discover their passion and encouraging them to apply for board or volunteer service.

Application forms are available online on the Plano Chamber of Commerce website.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:

• A history of involvement or a strong desire to become actively involved in the community.

• A commitment to ongoing personal development and community education.

• A willingness to accept leadership roles with civic, charitable, and community organizations.

• A commitment to program attendance and participation requirements.

THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF INVESTING IN ARTS EDUCATION

DISCOVER THE GENESIS DIFFERENCE

Genesis Children's Theatre, located in the heart of Plano, has earned the respect of educators and directors all over Plano ISD, and acting professionals around DFW because they run the theatre in a professional, organized way, steeped in theatrical tradition that garners respect. Plano City Lifestyle sat down with the Founders, Neicole Woodall and Megan Demsky, to learn more about their program and how the community can support the organization. We are delighted to pass along the valuable insights gathered from our candid conversation.

Q: IN WHAT WAYS DOES THE GENESIS CHILDREN'S THEATRE CONTRIBUTE TO THE CULTURAL FABRIC OF PLANO?

A:

We have been proud members of our community for over 13 years. Our parents and families know that when they walk through the doors at Genesis, their student

21 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/PLANO APRIL 2024
““After seeing one of our student performances, many of our audience members remark: “That wasn’t just good children’s theatre...that was great THEATRE!”

is going to be greeted by staff who know their child’s name, know who their child is, and are interested in their full well-being. Because we keep our class sizes small, intentionally, our students are more than just a dollar sign. Our families know that in this competitive world of children’s theatres, ours stands out because of the quality versus quantity mentality we have.

Q: HOW DOES INVESTING IN CHILDREN'S THEATRE CONTRIBUTE TO THE OVERALL DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH OF YOUNG INDIVIDUALS?

A: Soft skills are becoming increasingly essential in the workplace and everyday life. Theatre provides an excellent way to develop them. Actors are constantly honing their emotional intelligence, and empathy, and learning how to work with all types of people from all types of backgrounds and world views.

Successful theatre students also have great organizational abilities. Negotiating their schedules around rehearsals and performances requires exceptional time management.

Actors also have to think on a variety of different levels; embodying their characters while maintaining an external perspective demands high-level thinking. Actors are also exposed to new vocabulary, diverse perspectives, and challenging circumstances, requiring them to be well-rounded and adaptable.

We do a lot of “period pieces” so the students have to learn about history, from what they wore to how they would carry themselves physically, to colloquialisms, to political climates, all affecting what their characters are going through.

Q: WHY DO YOU THINK CHILDREN'S THEATRE PLAYS A CRUCIAL ROLE IN ENRICHING THE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE OF A COMMUNITY?

A: The arts help us to express ourselves, and more importantly, to FIND ourselves. Arts help to unify

people. A playwright can start important conversations by putting a difficult subject into perspective by using comedy, a composer of a musical can unlock emotion just by creating that melody that strikes a chord inside you, a lyricist can write one line that is so poetic, and so accurate, it can blow your mind. It is the actor’s job to be able to get behind that line or lyric and bring it to life. Through that study, bringing truth to what is written on the page, these kids must look inside themselves to see what they relate to, emotionally or mentally.

Q: WHAT MAKES GENESIS UNIQUE AND SO SPECIAL?

A: There is something magical about our shows, our space, and the professional theatre makers we have on staff. Our directors are seasoned professionals and are unique because of their tenure in the business.

I can’t tell you how many students have said, “Genesis is my second home.” So many kids find their “people” here and our kids are so great at welcoming new students to their second home. The most heartbreaking but beautiful thing we hear, and this is heavy, is “Genesis saved my life.” The impact of that statement is huge. We are a safety net, a place where all kids are welcome.

One hallmark at our theatre is our Ovation Award. This is given to any student who completes their sixth main stage show at Genesis. Our Executive Director, Neicole Woodall, gets up in front of the whole cast and their families and speaks to that student's transformative time at Genesis over those last 6 shows. It is a big honor for that student, lots of happy tears are shed, hugs are given, and pictures are taken. From then on, that student then has their picture on the wall and is recognized in our playbills. There is no cost or competition they must complete. It is our honor to recognize them on our wall. Our Standing Ovation award is for 20 main-stage productions. At the final bow for the show, Ms. Neicole comes out and addresses the audience and speaks to that student's growth over the past 20 main stage shows (which takes several years

BACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE
22

to complete) and the student is awarded with our Standing Ovation award. Their picture goes on our lobby wall, for all to see, and, as you can imagine, this is a big achievement, full of so much love and joy!

Our MOST important tradition that we created and do for each show is called: Love Notes. This is the bow that ties up months worth of hard work and growth. At Genesis, we are a mentorship program disguised as a theatre, and love notes is one of our hallmark traditions. Before our closing show, we gather the whole cast and their families, and the director reads each student the handwritten Love Note they have prepared. These notes speak encouragement to our students, recognizing their growth through the show, and recognizing what specific things they have done on stage and off stage which deserve noticing and praise. We believe in the power of kind and encouraging words and that is how we run, not only our rehearsals, but also our theatre. We hold a high bar, but we hold it with respectful communication, always leading with encouragement and positivity.

Established in 2010, Genesis Children's Theatre started when the mother and daughter team of Neicole Woodall and Megan Demsky wanted to offer something new and exciting to the young actors in North Texas.

Genesis produces around 6 to 7 shows a semester, and averages about 18-19 shows a year! Tuition covers everything the students need. No ticket purchase requirements and no costumes to purchase. As in the professional theatre, the job of costuming actors is the responsibility of the theatre and the director’s creative vision.

Funding is vital to maintain quality programming. Donors of all kinds are vital to the forward progress of these programs.

Non-Profit of the Month

Life Community Enrichment: Enriching Our Communities, One LIFE at a Time ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAWNA HUBERT, LIFE COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT GIVING BACK | LOCAL SERVICES 26

LIFE Community Enrichment (LCE) isn’t your traditional non-profit. The Plano-based foundation pairs a laser focus with heartfelt creativity to directly help deserving people at risk of slipping through the cracks during difficult life situations.

LCE searches for those facing financial hardships who don't yet qualify for traditional charitable assistance. Its goal is to reach people at a critical time to offer a hand up, so they don’t ultimately need a handout. LCE surrounds individuals and families from all walks of life with caring, specific support on a case-by-case basis, finding the right solutions to help them on their journey up the ladder.

In addition to personal, heart-to-heart outreach, LCE operates ongoing programs to honor specific members of our communities:

• DFW Sensory Prom, open to special needs students in North Texas

• Teacher’s Wish Program, fulfilling classroom wishes for outstanding educators

• New coats and shoes delivered to needy students through local school districts

• Holiday assistance for those who may not qualify with other organizations

To learn more about LCE and its programs, contact Executive Director Dawna Hubert at dhubert@lifeassociation.org or log on to www.lifecommunityenrichment.org.

LCE’s mission, “Enriching Our Communities, One LIFE at a Time,” can’t be accomplished alone. It relies on community partners and organizations to find deserving individuals in need. By reaching out with open arms when other organizations can’t, LCE helps fulfill their missions while continuing to realize its own.

LCE recipients usually fall into one of six categories:

• Health issues

• Struggling single parents

• Domestic violence survivors

• Those laid off or between jobs

• Crime victims

• Fires or natural disasters

INVEST IN LEAVING A LASTING LEGACY

DON'T LEAVE YOUR FATE (AND ESTATE) TO THE STATE

I know, I know, no one wants to talk about "end-oflife" planning. I get it. But it’s coming, sooner or later, and one of the biggest mistakes you can make is to not have a plan. Another significant mistake is trying to put together your Will, Trust, Powers of Attorney, and other estate planning documents through "Do It Yourself" online forms, kits, or even cut-rate legal services. (Spoiler alert: most of the time, those plans don’t even work!) It is critical for people to understand cost versus value and that like any good investment, the time and money you put into a quality estate plan now will have a huge rate of return…when it matters most!

Let’s see if we can help you understand how Wills and estate planning is one of the smartest investments. First, below is an overview of the costs of no planning versus two types of planning: 1. A Will Plan or 2. A Revocable Living Trust Plan:

LEGAL COMPASS | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES
30

COST WITHOUT ANY ESTATE PLAN IN 2024:

1. Potential Legal Fees – Probate Court: $7,000 - $14,000+; Total Fees: $17,000-$29,000+

2. Court Delay Time – Time to start: 9+ months; Total time delays: YEARS

3. Who Inherits Home & Assets: State of Texas decides

4. Who is in Charge of Distributing Assets: State of Texas decides

5. Who is Guardian of Your Kids: State of Texas decides

6. Privacy: Public record of assets & family history

COST WITH A WILL PLAN 2024:

1. Potential Legal Fees – Probate Court: $3,500 - $7,000+

2. Court Delay Time – Time to start: 3+ months

3. Who Inherits Home & Assets: You decide

4. Who is in Charge of Distributing Assets: You decide

5. Who is Guardian of Your Kids: You decide

6. Privacy: Public record of your Will & assets

CONTINUED > 31 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/PLANO APRIL 2024

COST WITH A REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST PLAN IN 2024:

1. Potential Legal Fees – $0

2. Court Delay Time – N/A

3. Who Inherits Home & Assets: You decide

4. Who is in Charge of Distributing Assets: You decide

5. Who is Guardian of Your Kids: You decide

6. Privacy: Private/No public record

As you can see, there is a huge cost in time, money, privacy, and frankly, your own choices when it comes to not having a quality plan. Now, the difference between a Will and a Revocable Living Trust is for another time, but it is something only an experienced, qualified law firm should be advising you on. More on how to find such a firm later.

Wills and estate planning are one of the smartest investments one can make. There is a huge cost in time, money, privacy, and, frankly, your own choices when it comes to not having a quality plan. Now, the difference between a Will and a Revocable Living Trust is for another time, but it is something only an experienced, qualified law firm should be advising you on. More on how to find such a firm later.

When people come to the Burch Law Firm, often they say, “we want to spend as little as possible.” The question I ask then is, “Now or later?” Because like any good investment, it’s going to take some time and money

now to save a lot more later. Many people, sadly, think “anything” such as DIY forms or reduced-fee legal services are “better than nothing.” Unfortunately, most of the time they aren’t even valid or can make things even worse. We’ve seen people lose their homestead exemptions or cut out a spouse inadvertently because they tried to do this planning on their own.

So, how do you choose the right law firm to create your estate plan? Well, if you’re going to do this, you need to do it right! But what does that mean? If you’re reading this, then hopefully you’ve already realized that DIY kits and forms, or those legal programs are not for you, and you need a qualified law firm to put together your estate plan. How do you know if you’ve picked the right one? If you have no experience when it comes to how Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, and other estate matters get handled when the time comes, then the easiest way to decide is… well, cost. As long as it sounds like they get the job done, right? Sadly, even law firms make things much more expensive and time-consuming when it’s time to actually use the planning documents they create! Sure, they may be “cheap” or easy to create, set up, and sign, but how can you be sure they'll stand up when it matters most?

Here are some final thoughts. Estate planning is often called “legacy planning.” Why? Well, one of the definitions of “legacy” is: “an amount of money or property

LEGAL COMPASS | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES
32

left to someone in a Will.” Another definition of “legacy” is “the long-lasting impact of particular events and actions that took place in the past, or of a person’s life.” Now, your legacy could either be the long-lasting impact of not creating a proper estate plan…or it could be the long-lasting impact of your life. When you create an estate plan, and you do it right, then your family will be able to focus on the story of your life and not the impact of you leaving a mess. And your story is your legacy. You and your family deserve the dignity of a plan that will tell your story and honor your legacy. Now that is something worth investing in!

Below is a checklist of what to look for when choosing an Estate Planning Law Firm.

• What percentage of their practice is focused on estate planning? (This should be at least 50%.)

• Do they also handle probate cases or estate administration? (If they don’t know how these documents get interpreted by courts and financial institutions when you pass away, then they shouldn’t be drafting them.)

• Will they guide you on arranging bank accounts and designating beneficiaries for life insurance, retirement, and investments?

• Will they help you get your documents signed properly so they work?

• Do they provide you with originals and electronic copies of your signed documents?

• Do they have a succession plan in case of the owner's death, sale, or retirement, ensuring continuity for updates and family needs?

• How do they charge if you want to update your plan?

• Do they provide periodic reviews of your plan to make sure it is still in line with your wishes and any changes in the law?

• Do they have expertise in advising on asset protection and business interests for business or rental property owners?

• Will they draft and ensure the filing/recording of deeds, such as for a revocable living trust?

• Why do they do what they do? Do they have a clearly defined mission statement or value statement?

Empowering Your Financial Journey

In today's complex financial landscape, discussions about money management may evoke apprehension and uncertainty for some people, especially individuals who manage both their personal and business finances. Despite how daunting the idea is, postponing financial planning can hinder a family from building generational wealth.

At the core of effective financial planning lies a fundamental step: assessment. Whether contemplating retirement, preparing for a child's education, or navigating business working capital, the journey begins with an evaluation of one's financial circumstances and aspirations. This reflective process sets the stage for envisioning a clear financial trajectory—a roadmap tailored to individual goals and aspirations.

We sat with the experts at Altland and Harris Financial Group, Inc. to get their input on some common questions families and business owners may have like, "How do I save for my child's college education?", "How much money do I need to retire comfortably?", "How do I get more capital to grow my business?", or the infamous, "What is considered a tax write-off for my business?".

Henry Harris, the CEO of Altland & Harris, states that "Although there may be quick solutions like a 529 College Savings Plan, a tax-advantaged savings plan for future education costs, there are restrictions and limitations that consumers must be aware of". As far as a “comfortable retirement,” that might look different depending on who you ask, which will lead to further questioning like, "What's your timeline until retirement?".

When it comes to business finances and a business owner looking to grow their business with limited capital, having a trusted CPA is a key business partner. A good CPA should help identify tax-savings advantages by understanding your business as if it were their own and help set up tax

savings measures. Further, they can help you prepare your business finances, which is a requirement for most creditors and/or banks when qualifying for a loan.

As much as we would like to separate our personal and business life, especially when it comes to finances, it can be challenging since they may impact each other inherently, especially for a business owner who has devoted their personal life savings in hopes to create financial freedom for themselves or their families.

When it comes to your financial investments and well-being, it is imperative that you work with someone you trust who is knowledgeable and understanding of your unique set of circumstances.

One thing that defines Henry, and his firm, is the sheer amount of time and knowledge he gives back to his community. When he’s not volunteering to tutor children and adults at his local church, he is an adjunct professor at Collin County Community College where he teaches a class to help students earn their certification through the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. He’s also a volunteer facilitator of a free monthly tax workshop at the college to help business owners get off to a successful start.

Henry is a natural-born educator with the knowledge and desire to help people succeed — whether it’s building a prosperous business or investing for retirement. When you work with Henry and his team of qualified professionals, you’ll get the dedication to deliver superior service and attention to detail you need to help reach your goals.

All that being said, when it comes to financial planning, there is not a “one-sizefits-all” for any one client. If you have any questions, please reach out to Altland and Harris at hharris@moneyconcepts.com.
