Navigating the local real estate landscape, whether you're a resident, investor, or looking to join our community.
By Slava Zborovsky, Slava Realty Group powered by Christie’s International Real Estate
As a seasoned broker with Christie’s International Real Estate in Westwood, NJ, I’ve had the privilege of assisting numerous empty nesters in the Pascack Valley area as they transition to a smaller home. Downsizing can be an emotional and challenging process, but with the right guidance and approach, it can also be an exciting opportunity for a fresh start. Here are some invaluable tips to help empty nesters navigate this important milestone:
Start Early and Plan Strategically: Downsizing is not a decision to be made hastily. Begin planning well in advance to allow sufficient time to sort through belongings, make decisions, and prepare your home for sale. Create a timeline and checklist to stay organized and on track throughout the downsizing process.
Declutter with Purpose: One of the most crucial steps in downsizing is decluttering your current home. Take inventory of your belongings and identify items that hold sentimental value versus those that are no longer needed. Consider donating, selling, or gifting items that you no longer use or need. Remember, less clutter means less to pack and move to your new home.
Stage for Success: Staging your home is essential to attract potential buyers and maximize its appeal. Remove personal items and excess furniture to create a clean, spacious, and inviting atmosphere. Highlight the unique features of your home and showcase its potential as a comfortable and functional space for the next chapter of your life.
Find the Right-Sized Property: When searching for a smaller home, prioritize your needs and preferences. Consider factors such as location, amenities, layout, and affordability. Work closely with your real estate agent to explore available options
in the Pascack Valley area that align with your lifestyle and budget. Remember, downsizing doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or quality of life—it’s about finding the perfect fit for this new phase of your journey.
Embrace a Fresh Start: Downsizing is an opportunity to simplify your life, focus on what truly matters, and embrace a fresh start. Embrace the positive aspects of downsizing, such as reduced maintenance, lower expenses, and newfound freedom to pursue your passions and interests. Surround yourself with belongings and memories that bring you joy and create a space that reflects your unique personality and style.
In conclusion, downsizing can be a transformative experience for empty nesters in the Pascack Valley area. By approaching the process with careful planning, decluttering with purpose, staging for success, finding the right-sized property, and embracing a fresh start, you can navigate this transition with confidence and excitement. As your trusted real estate advisor, I am here to support you every step of the way and help you find the perfect home to begin the next chapter of your journey.

I hope this message finds you happy and healthy! I'm thrilled to share this issue with you because it's all about the pure joy that kids bring to their families and the incredible impact they have on our communities.
Kids aren’t just the hope for a brighter tomorrow—they’re the very foundation of our society. Their innocence, curiosity, and limitless potential can shape the world in ways we can only dream of. They represent our hardest work and greatest investment, and we’re excited to highlight the best of Pascack Valley’s kids in this issue!
And let’s not forget our furry (or feathery) friends! Pets offer a special kind of companionship that’s transformative for both kids and adults. They teach us about unconditional love, growth, and essential life skills in a nurturing environment. The bond between kids and their pets is deep and meaningful, fostering empathy, responsibility, and companionship.
For as long as I can remember, I've had a deep love for animals. Whether it was my childhood dogs, various reptiles, fish, or rabbits, I was always eager to add a new pet to my 'collection'. Nowadays, I have two rescue cats named Lorenzo and Liliana, along with two chickens in my backyard. To me, pets are what truly complete a household.
Both children and pets need us. Our care, attention, and intention shape how they grow and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to give a little extra love to the kids and pets in your life.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

THE VITALITY OF EMERGENCY TRAINING IN UNCERTAIN TIMES
In today's uncertain world, preparedness for emergencies is more crucial than ever. As Matthew Savitsky, founder of SY6 Emergency Training, emphasizes, safety training is not merely a necessity but a crucial life skill, particularly for families. His path to founding SY6 stems from a diverse background in emergency medicine, law enforcement, and military service. Starting as an emergency medical technician (EMT) in New Jersey since 2004,
Savitsky transitioned into law enforcement, rising to the rank of Detective in Bergen County by 2021. His dedication to public safety led him to become certified as a School Resource Officer by the New Jersey Association of School Resource Officers (NJASRO).
Savitsky's journey into emergency training goes beyond certifications; it's driven by personal experiences and a desire to empower communities. After 12 years in the U.S. Army, including a deployment to eastern Afghanistan where he reached the rank of Captain, Savitsky brought his realworld expertise back home in 2016.
His decision to become certified as an American Safety & Health Institute Instructor-Trainer, American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
Instructor, and AVERT Instructor-Trainer wasn't just about adding credentials. It was a moment where he realized the impact he could have on his community. Each certification brought its own "aha" moments— instances where Savitsky witnessed firsthand how proper training could save lives, whether through administering CPR or teaching other essential safety protocols.
SY6 Emergency Training offers a range of courses tailored to unique needs, with a focus on family health and safety. From child and infant safety courses to CPR and AED training, the company equips participants with essential skills to handle emergencies at home or in public settings. Participants learn how to respond to choking incidents in young children, a skill that can make a significant difference in

- Matthew Savitsky
emergency situations. “We want families to feel confident in their ability to respond to any situation,” says Savitsky.
Savitsky's approach stands out for its practicality and accessibility, which is evident in initiatives like the Child Safety Course. These courses are designed to be held in people's homes or any preferred location, creating a comfortable environment conducive to learning. This flexibility was exemplified recently when our magazine, in collaboration with SY6 Emergency Training, partnered with the local 'FIT4MOM' group to host a Child and Infant Safety Course this past June. Many parents attended, eager to learn lifesaving techniques in an interactive setting.
The emphasis on small group sizes ensures that each participant receives personalized attention during the sessions.
Experience a calming atmosphere where skilled clinicians exceed your highest expectations while creating gorgeous smiles.
Enjoy an exclusive menu of specialized services tailored to your smile and your needs.
Replace missing teeth and permanently restore your smile with dental implants.
Give a second chance on teeth that are worn down, broken, or decayed.
Create your dream smile with porcelain veneers and other cosmetic solutions.
"By bringing the training directly to families, we can address their specific concerns and tailor the content to their needs," explains Savitsky. This personalized approach not only enhances learning but also ensures that families gain practical skills that are directly applicable to their everyday lives.
“One of the key aspects of the training is instilling confidence in participants.” Savitsky acknowledges that freezing up in emergencies is a common response for many people, but he believes that with the right training and guidance, individuals can overcome this hurdle. By simplifying complex procedures and providing clear instructions, Savitsky aims to empower participants to take decisive action when faced with an emergency.
The importance of safety training has become even more apparent in recent years,
with the rise in unexpected crises and incidents. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the need for individuals to be prepared to handle emergencies, especially when traditional support systems may not be readily available. Savitsky's courses have seen increased demand as more people recognize the importance of being proactive about their safety and the safety of their loved ones especially in Bergen County.
In addition to basic first aid and CPR, SY6 Emergency Training offers specialized courses like 'Stop the Bleed' and 'Active Violence Emergency Response Training (AVERT),' which are designed to prepare individuals for critical and often unexpected emergencies.
Savitsky shares, "For 'Stop the Bleed' participants learn how to quickly apply tourniquets
and pack wounds to control severe bleeding. It's a skill that can truly save lives." He adds, "Similarly, our 'AVERT' course goes beyond traditional safety training by integrating tactical response strategies with medical interventions"
Savitsky also emphasizes the importance of having the necessary equipment on hand, such as bleeding control kits, AED's, and Narcan for opioid overdoses. Preparedness extends beyond just knowing what to do; it also involves having the right tools readily available to spring into action when needed.
“For families, safety training is not just about acquiring a certificate; it's about gaining peace of mind knowing that they have the knowledge and skills to handle emergencies effectively,” Savitsky says. Whether it's administering CPR to a loved one or applying a tourniquet to stop bleeding, the confidence gained from safety training can make a life-saving difference.
Emergency safety training plays a vital role in safeguarding families and communities. Through accessible and practical courses, individuals can acquire the skills and confidence needed to respond effectively in crisis situations. As Matthew Savitsky's mission shows, being prepared can make all the difference when seconds count.

School's out for summer, but with education on every parent's mind, perhaps this season is perfect for embracing learning. Michael Hazen, a Bergen County native and owner of the newly opened Sylvan Learning Center Park Ridge - Montvale, brings a unique blend of legal expertise and educational passion to the forefront. Hazen shares his inspiration behind entering the field of supplemental education.
Hazen's journey to Sylvan has been a long journey, illustrating life's unexpected twists. Reflecting on his shift from law to education, Hazen explains, “After nearly two decades as an attorney, I began exploring supplemental education, which is at the core of Sylvan's mission. That exploration led me to Sylvan, sparking my transition into this field.”
One of Sylvan's strengths, as Hazen highlights, is their dedication to personalized learning. He explains, “We use a method known as Sylvan Insight, which involves a four-step process to best serve the needs of each individual student.” Sylvan Learning Center Park Ridge - Montvale starts with an adaptive assessment that responds in real-time to the student's performance, identifying strengths and weaknesses and pinpointing where their learning journey should begin.
“We use a method known as Sylvan Insight, which involves a four-step process to best serve the needs of each individual student.”
- Michael Hazen
Hazen adds, “From there, we develop an individualized plan tailored to each student, which our certified teachers then use to deliver targeted instruction.” With a focus on ensuring that students not only master the skills in our center but can also apply and integrate them effectively in their regular classrooms.
Hazen emphasizes the importance of building confidence and self-esteem in students, stating, “When a student faces challenges, it can often lead to insecurities in the Classroom. One of the remarkable aspects we observe is that when new students begin our program, they immediately start building confidence as they see tangible results.”
Sylvan Learning Center Park Ridge - Montvale also incorporates a motivation element designed to encourage students to work hard through positive reinforcement.
Hazen urges juniors to make use of Sylvan's SAT and ACT practice tests, emphasizing the importance of early preparation. He suggests, “For juniors preparing for college admissions exams, it's crucial to plan ahead for the August test date. Start discussing with someone how to create a study preparation strategy.”
Hazen pictures Sylvan as not just a place for academic enrichment but also a hub for community engagement. He shares, “At Sylvan, we serve students from kindergarten through 12th grade. We support their school curriculum and also provide all sorts of opportunities to better kids' education. And we do so by working directly with students or by partnering with their schools to ensure additional support for the local community.”
At Sylvan Learning Center, Hazen and his team are ready to guide students every step of the way, leading them on the path to success with knowledge, encouragement, and support.

In a town where community support is a core value, Cradles to Crayons in Emerson reflects intentional childcare and education. Laura Litchult, founder and owner, has cultivated a nurturing environment that emphasizes the mind, body, and spirit of each child.
Litchult's journey from a background in infant and child psychology to opening Cradles to Crayons in 2008 is a testament to her dedication to childcare. “After the 2008 market crash, I decided to follow my passion for opening a childcare center. It was the best decision I've ever made,” she says.
CONTINUED >
As a family business, Litchult's daycare holds a special significance beyond just its educational role. With her own children, such as her son Paul, now actively involved in running the business, the sense of family at the daycare extends well beyond its walls. "Having my children engaged in the business is incredibly fulfilling, and it's even more special knowing that my daughter will soon bring her own child here," Litchult reflects.
Litchult adds, “We are very intentional with what we do with the children.” “We focus on academics and emotional intelligence. Helping children manage their feelings and understand themselves is probably one of our most important features aside from academics.”
Cradles to Crayons operates three locations in Emerson: two centers for infants to two-and-a-half-year-olds and a preschool and pre-K center. Litchult stresses the importance of academic readiness, even for the youngest children. “We have an academic curriculum. We teach color recognition, sight words, and basic math. Most of the kids here leave reading at a kindergarten or first-grade level.”
Litchult's passion for early childhood education is evident in her commitment to a 52-week program, which includes modified
academics during the summer months. “I truly believe in doing academics all throughout the school year,” she says. “In the summertime, we do more summer camps, but we still maintain an academic focus.”
A significant aspect of Cradles to Crayons is the strong sense of family and community it fosters. “During COVID, we created such a family that many families still come back to us, even after moving on to public school,” Litchult notes. “It's great to see children return for our summer camps and reconnect with their friends.”
Litchult's approach to technology in the classroom is cautious. “We have no screen time other than educational videos. I believe children learn best through socialization, play, and imagination,” she explained. This philosophy extends to incorporating yoga and meditation into the daily routine to help children manage anxiety and prepare for transitions.
The center's reputation in Bergen County is stellar, with Litchult mentioning a long waitlist and numerous testimonials from satisfied parents. “We've built strong relationships with families, and we have a good reputation on Bergen County Moms,” she says. “We currently care for close to 250 children a day with a staff of 48 people.”
Cradles to Crayons is also deeply embedded in the Emerson community. “We sponsor local teams, participate in scholarship programs, and are involved in events like the Emerson Chamber of Commerce car show,” Litchult says. “I feel really compelled to serve Emerson and want to focus on this community.”
For Litchult, community means “Someone always has your back.” Cradles to Crayons embodies this spirit, ensuring that every child and family feels supported, both in good times and challenging ones.

Owner: Colleen Tierney, MA CCC-SLP
Colleen Tierney's journey into speech therapy began unexpectedly during her undergraduate years. Where she was initially on a path towards accounting, she unexpectedly found herself captivated by the world of anatomy through a close friend who was studying nursing. This newfound interest prompted her to explore speech pathology, eventually leading her to earn her undergraduate degree in the field in 1988. Her journey into speech therapy wasn't just a career choice; it became a passion-driven mission to make a difference in children's lives, particularly those facing challenges like autism. Her 32-year tenure in Westwood schools speaks volumes about her dedication and impact. Throughout her career, Colleen specialized in working with children ranging from preschoolers to middle school students, focusing on addressing the communication needs of each child under her care.
One example of her impact includes a time when Colleen worked tirelessly with a non-verbal child with autism, using techniques to help the child communicate effectively with parents, peers and teachers. Her persistence and commitment not only improved the child's ability to express themselves but also fostered a sense of confidence and independence.
Transitioning from the school system to private practice wasn't a leap she took lightly. Tierney's passion for aiding families of children with speech difficulties fueled her decision. Starting her practice, Speech Warrior, on the side in 2020, she officially launched it in the midst of the pandemic, navigating remote sessions and gradually building her clientele. As demand grew, she expanded her services, ultimately retiring from the school setting to fully devote herself to her private practice.
“What sets Speech Warrior apart is our deep commitment to bridging the gap between therapy sessions and real-life application,” Tierney shares. “In the school system, the focus was primarily on the child.” But at Speech Warrior, Tierney and her team empower families by educating them on how to support their children's communication development beyond therapy sessions. Their approach is rooted in evidence-based practice, with a particular emphasis on neurodiversity affirmation.
Looking ahead, Tierney envisions her practice evolving into a comprehensive therapeutic center, offering a wide range of services under one roof to provide holistic support for children's development. Tierney says her ultimate goal is “To create a nurturing environment where families feel confident that their children are receiving the best possible care tailored to their individual needs.”
Tierney and her team's dedication to their craft, her passion for educating families, and commitment to providing evidence-based, neurodiversity-affirming therapy make her practice a center of support for children and families navigating the challenges of speech and communication disorders.

Whether your pup has the obedience of a dog show finalist, or social behavior that makes you want to play dead around others, you can develop more owner confidence with help from this expert trainer.
ARTICLE BY LISA MOYER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES | STYLED BY ANGELA BROOCKERD
“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”
Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.
• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it , but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.
• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.
• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.
• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY PASCACK VALLEY RESIDENTS
The Pascack Valley loves their pets! This past June, we invited local Pascack Valley residents to share pictures of their beloved pets, and we were absolutely blown away by the overwhelming number of submissions. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed photos. Your participation made our Kids and Pets Issue truly special, highlighting the deep bond between families and their furry companions in our community.
Cathy McCarter Johnson, a longtime resident of Washington Township, shares about Nala, her Pit Bull who has become a constant source of joy. "She's 2 years old and was rescued a year ago from Peace4paws in Westwood, NJ," Cathy says, highlighting the meaningful connections our community shares with their pets.
In this close-knit suburbia, pets often weave themselves into the fabric of daily life. Families take pride in their wellgroomed pets, evident during community events where dogs proudly strut in their finest coats and cats display their agility. The bond between pets and their owners transcends mere ownership; it is a relationship built on love and mutual respect.
Whether it's the playful antics of a kitten or the loyal companionship of a senior dog, these animals enrich the lives of everyone they encounter. It's a time to acknowledge the importance of these creatures in our lives, reminding us that they are not just pets but cherished members of our families, deserving of our love and care, just like any other family member.
