The GENTLEMEN'S Issue

To all the gentlemen making a difference
An inspirational man has the unique opportunity and privilege of shaping and mentoring the people around him. From childhood lessons to lending advice on adult issues, the men in our lives can help us carve out our own paths in a multitude of ways.

A gentleman is a leader who does the right thing, even when it isn’t the easiest path to take. Fathers, coaches, teachers, uncles, grandfathers and bosses all have a profound impact on us. I think of how my husband is such a strong and steady leader for our daughter and my rock, partner and best friend. I think of how I grew up with strong male influences who encouraged me to discover my passions with grit and determination.
We all can think of a gentleman in our lives who pushed us, encouraged us, offered wise words and was a shoulder to lean on. My purpose for this issue is not only to highlight these quality characteristics, but to detail how important it is for men to be this beacon. The doers. The thinkers. The helpers who aid out of the kindness of their hearts.
This month, we are honoring the men who molded us, guided us, and provided unconditional love and support. In these pages, you will read about the beautiful bonds between family, how to take care of your loved ones in their older age, where to get the best, freshest meats in North Texas for that grillmaster in your life, and why splurging on that fun, tricked-out golf cart will bring the kid out in anyone.
To all the gentlemen out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, thank you. The impact is far greater and more profound than you might know.

LEARNING FROM THE BEST

AS PILLARS IN NORTH TEXAS’
HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY, COLTIN SHERRELL AND DAKON DOGGETT’S CONNECTION TRANSCENDS BEYOND A STEPFATHER-STEPSON RELATIONSHIP.
Having a mentor or someone who provides guidance and direction in life is invaluable. Coltin Sherrell, an entrepreneur based in North Texas, knows this firsthand. For him, one of his biggest mentors and supporters is his stepfather, Dakon Doggett.
“I’ve known Dakon my entire life. He married my mom when I was very young and has always been a father figure to me. He's very levelheaded and so good at navigating tough situations,” shared Sherrell. “It's really incredible watching him work in any capacity, even if it's difficult relationships with other people.
“He is always asking things like, ‘How can we understand the situation better?’ or ‘How can I understand where you're standing, and you understand where I'm standing so that we can proceed to make this a win-win situation?’ He's so good at that and it's something that I really admire and respect about him. It's something that I've tried to learn as best I can from him.”
Growing up, Sherrell watched as his mom, Amy, and stepdad founded and grew several businesses, including the Mule Barn Sports Bar & Grill, Lone Spur Café, LS Catering, and Lucky Spur Ranch Retreat. As a teen, working alongside his family in these businesses and observing how his family handles situations gave Sherrell great insight into being successful.
While it seems overwhelming to manage multiple businesses, Sherrell said Doggett taught him one simple rule that creates a sturdy foundation for any company.
“I think the keystone of how my family runs our businesses is that we treat everybody with respect,” he explained. “We understand people are human beings and make mistakes, but treating them as if they are less in some way is completely against what we stand for and what we want to achieve.”
Last fall, Sherrell opened Higher Grounds, a local coffee shop that serves coffee, breakfast burritos brought in from a local chef, and pastries while providing a welcoming atmosphere and gathering place for the community. According to Doggett, opening Higher Grounds is a perfect fit for Sherrell.
“Coltin grew up in the hospitality industry and it comes naturally to him,” said Doggett. “If you’ve talked with him or done business with him, you know that hospitality is his blood. In the hospitality industry, at the end of the day, it's all about making people happy and exceeding their expectations.”
Sherrell, who loves making connections with people, wants the coffee shop to provide a great space for locals and a fun work environment for employees. As Sherrell took his first solo venture into owning a business, he looked to Doggett for guidance. Apart from cheering him on, Doggett advised Sherrell to proceed with caution and make educated decisions when it comes to financing and cultivating a company. Sherrell also sought Doggett’s counsel on balancing running a business and having the business run you.
“The biggest thing that I've learned is that success is so relative. It's not all just numbers on a spreadsheet. It's how good the relationships are with your friends, family and community,” Sherrell shared. “It’s also important to trust the people that you've put in positions to do the job that you hired them to do. It’s good to guide them as they do their jobs, but hiring someone and then micromanaging them means they will never be efficient.”
For Doggett, watching Sherrell open his own business is a full-circle moment that brings him joy not just as a mentor, but as family.
“I'm very proud of him and I think he's doing great,” he said. “Coltin has always been very self-disciplined, motivated, and a hard worker, even when he was young and in school, so I’m also not surprised that he’s doing well.”
Each of the family’s businesses focuses on bringing people together and creating connections in the community. The restaurant, bar, café, and catering businesses allow people to gather for any big or small occasion. Lucky Spur Ranch Retreat serves as a venue for weddings, celebrations, and corporate events by offering picturesque scenery and opportunities to leave the stress of regular life behind. Overnight accommodations, on-site catering, outdoor activities, and fully equipped meeting spaces ensure groups and families have everything they need for an all-inclusive experience.
“They all cultivate the same thing: a sense of community and togetherness,” said Sherrell. “I think it's indicative of the people we are because you don't spend lots of money and years of your time working to build something that cultivates community unless it's something really important to you.”

“THE KEYSTONE OF HOW MY FAMILY RUNS OUR BUSINESSES IS WE TREAT EVERYBODY WITH RESPECT.”

LOCALLY RAISED, FRESHLY SOURCED
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE W. PARNELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINA SCHMIDTFor Stephen Kirkland and his family, providing a trusted source of high-quality protein for the community is paramount. As the owners of Z Bar Cattle Co., they do this by locally producing and selling grass-finished and grain-finished beef in addition to offering top-tier chicken and pork products, all here in North Texas.
"I feel that being small, local, and involved in every single stage gives us an advantage by providing what our customers are telling us they want for their family's
protein needs,” said Kirkland. “Our goal is to listen to what customers have to say and produce a wholesome, affordable product.”
The Angus cattle are raised at their USDA-certified All Natural feeding facility, which follows protocols and requirements for each stage of the beef lifecycle process. With grass-finished cattle, the animals forage and graze in pastures their entire lives, producing tender, lean beef with a rich flavor.

Z Bar Cattle Co. brings home grown to the storefront with its grass-finished beef, fresh cuts of chicken, succulent pork, and everything in between.
Z Bar Cattle Co.’s retail locations, which host onsite butchers, allow for timely and quality processing of each cut of meat, such as steaks, roasts, briskets, ribs and ground beef. Local processing also ensures the purity of the meat, which is another important factor.
“We take a lot of pride in being extremely transparent with every stage of our process. We never add any outside products or fillers. Our beef doesn't contain fats from other sources or other counties all blended together,” shared Kirkland. “We want to build relationships with our customers by earning their trust and providing a great product.”
Z Bar Cattle Co. has two locations, including 100 Country Club Rd., Suite 101 in Argyle. To see the variety of cuts and meat products they offer, check out zbarcattle.com.

BAR CATTLE CO.’S MEAT CASE IS FULL OF THE CLEANEST CUTS OF QUALITY MEAT, SUCH AS:
• A variety of different cuts of steaks, including filets, New York strips, T-bone steaks and fresh ground beef for burgers.

• Bone and organs - an amazing addition to make broths and stews more flavorful in a natural way.

TERESA’S HOUSE’S TOP PRIORITY IS MAKING SURE LOVED ONES ARE CARED FOR WHILE LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST.

PEACE OF MIND
When it comes to moving a loved one to a memory care community, it can be an anxiety-inducing experience. Will they be happy? What will their quality of life be? Are there people there who will care and love them like family would? At Teresa’s House, the resounding answer is yes.
ranch-style homes designed to feel like home. The 4.1-acre grounds are beautifully landscaped with walking paths, equine stables and raised garden beds, giving it a neighborhood-style feel.
Residents have chef-inspired meals every day and can enjoy a long list of
“WHEREVER THEY ARE ON THEIR JOURNEY, WE MEET THEM WHERE THEY ARE.”
Teresa’s House is curated to feel exactly like home. The community is proud of its top-tier, luxury layouts and amenities in its memory care village, which are designed to provide comfort for those living with Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of memory impairment or dementia. Every small detail has been designed to ensure residents feel at ease and not like they are in a clinical environment.
Maria Long, Corporate Sales Director at Teresa’s House, emphasized that this part of life simply is a different chapter for residents and that they all have their own paths carved out with unique wants and needs.
“Wherever they are on their journey, we meet them where they are,” Long explained. “It all starts and ends with one word: love.”
Co-owners Godwin Dixon and Teresa Whittington opened Teresa’s House in Argyle last year. The community currently features four 16-suite
activities to help keep their minds sharp, such as cooking classes in a retro-style kitchen, social events on the open patios, and hanging out in the Classic Car Garage, which boasts of a 1965 cherry red Mustang that community members can tinker with in the state-of-the-art activities center.
“Our memory care village allows our residents to live relatively normal lives with choices and independence,” said Michelle Holland, Community Relations Director of Teresa’s House. “We have designed our community to bring the same familiarity of home here with them so they can feel comfortable in their living room, their dining room, and they can see the open kitchen and their meals being prepared.”
Most importantly, Teresa’s House employs tenured healthcare professionals who cater to each resident’s individual needs. Qualified CNAs and nurses are onsite around the clock every day, ensuring that residents are

safe and cared for. Rather than have residents with different needs combined in one area, each of the four ranch homes caters to a specific level of senior care.
Should a resident’s health status change, the houses are identical so they can transition to the home that best fits their needs without the confusion of adapting to a new environment.
“We really truly do get to know each and every one of our residents and their families so their loved ones can live a purposeful life,” Holland said. “If you're experiencing dementia, then you should be living in a community with these professionals who know and understand the disease process and can really encourage the residents to live, not just exist."
Teresa’s House welcomes everyone to learn more about the community and visit the grounds in person. Call 940-514-6908 to schedule a tour or stop by their Argyle location at 321 Tucker Street.

Driver’s Notebook
Discover how you can design a one-of-a-kind golf cart to fit your style with RFX Carts.
ARTICLE BY KELLIE KREVOSKY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAVANNA ROMANOSince the 1950s, golf carts have always been a source of fun, but RFX Carts’ unique, personalized rides add a new level of enjoyment.
RFX Carts is Northlake’s resident luxury golf cart dealership. The interiors sport high-quality, comfortable upholstery, upgraded technology, and the option to add lights for that extra touch on certain models. Inside, there are 10-inch touchscreen displays that have Bluetooth capabilities and are compatible with both iPhone Autoplay and Android Auto.
Owner Brett Avenriep also included safety features on each cart such as turn signals, headlights, tail lights, high beams, backup cameras and seatbelts.
“Anything you can think to do with this golf cart has already been done by us,” Avenriep said.
All of RFX Carts have standard traits that aren’t commonplace in the industry. Each one has a rechargeable lithium 100 amp battery which gets about 30-40 miles of
use per charge. They have four-wheel disc brakes, which is a recent addition for all golf carts. For comparison, most cars on the road have disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the back.
Because of all the upgrades, RFX Carts are classified as LSVs, or Low-Speed Vehicles. That means drivers can legally operate them on any street with a posted speed limit sign of 30 mph.
While there are many similarities with other competitors, RFX Carts prides itself on the big and small details. Avenriep spent years researching manufacturers and distributors for the highest-quality features.
“The most important thing people pay attention to should be the warranty and the after-sale experience,” Avenriep said, adding that his business model is less about a sale and more about building a relationship customers can depend on.
Shop for a one-of-a-kind golf cart today at RFX Carts, located at 12195 Business Highway 287 North in Fort Worth.
THE SKY IS THE LIMIT WHEN IT COMES TO CUSTOMIZATION OF USED AND BRAND NEW GOLF CARTS AT RFX CARTS. LUXURY DETAILS INCLUDE:
• Custom leather seats
• Unique paint schemes
• Standardized safety features
• Personalized lighting
• State-of-the-art wheel and brake systems

Perfecting Your Golf Swing
ARTICLE BY DANIEL SCHOWENGERDTWhether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.

01. Get fit for equipment.
If you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip. The clubs don’t swing themselves, so don’t neglect instruction and practice, but getting the right equipment is a vital piece of the puzzle.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.

There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:
Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)

You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
