Tribute to fathers
The importance of a father is tremendous! Fathers make countless differences in their homes and family.
In the June issue of Northlake City Lifestyle, we tip our cap to the men who work hard to build a home.
A father’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words and positive actions can make a long-lasting impact on his children.
Here are just a few of the ways dads can build up their homes:
• A father’s strength can be powerful
• A dad’s words can be fueling and inspirational
• Hugs from a dad can be deeply comforting
• A dad’s smile can instill joy and confidence
• Time with a dad can be fun and productive
• A dad’s physicality can be challenging
• A dad’s guidance can be life-changing and foundational
• A father’s correction can be life-saving and life-giving
• Adventures with a dad can be exciting and memorable
Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say — thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you, as well as the community around you.
Happy Father’s Day!

Beating to a different drum
ARTICLE BY KATE JONES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELSEY THANE PHOTOGRAPHYEllis Hampton’s life has always revolved around music.
As an award-winning musician, composer and educator, he had a passion for helping people deepen their knowledge and expand their lives through music.
“Music is the truest way for human beings to express the inexpressible, but the only way we understand life,” Hampton said.
It was a difficult choice for him to leave music education after obtaining his doctorate at the University of North Texas. But when he was recruited by True North Financial Solutions, he felt it was the perfect time to adapt his considerable skills to a new environment that dovetailed with education and creativity.
Hampton has found serving as a financial advisor a rewarding experience. He enjoys helping clients assess and clarify their financial needs and goals. His deep understanding of the educational process helps him navigate his clients through the sometimes-complex world of financial planning. He sees his role as helping people enhance their current lives and secure their future.

Particularly rewarding to Ellis was when one of his former students, now a dentist, became one of his clients. He loves seeing his former students thrive. He finds it a privilege to have played a small role in their success.
Music will always be a part of Ellis’ life and you can find him on his drums every day. But his new passion is helping people plan for their financial future.

A Real Gem
FAMILY SHINES PROVIDING FINE JEWELRY ARTICLE BY LESLIE GUY PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLIE CHRISTINE PHOTOGRAPHYNasr Jewelers is the epitome of a true family business.

Peter Nasr, patriarch of the Nasr family, started the jewelry business before he came to the U.S. He was born and lived in Lebanon until the mid-1980s. Then his great aunt traveled to the U.S. as a nurse, and one by one, members of the Nasr family made their way overseas for a better life.
Peter and his brothers embarked on a family dynasty of creating and designing beautifully handcrafted jewelry. Combined, they have five jewelry stores in the Metroplex.
What started as a family business is passing to the next generation, with Peter’s children at the helm. Andrew is finishing his degree in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship Enterprise and Real Estate. At 23, he’s on the fast track to accomplishing a lot for himself and his family. He’s GIA certified and poised to eventually lead Nasr Jewelers along with his older sister, Sarah and younger sister Alexis.

Since 2005, all three of them have been a part of the growth of the store. Now as adults, they all play integral parts of the business, with Andrew leading the main business.

Sarah is behind the scenes, utilizing her CAD skills to create custom designed rings. Alexis fills the role of helping customers in the store and working with other employees to learn about the jewelry they sell.
What makes Nasr Jewelers special is that they are all about family, not just their own. They treat each customer
as family, going out of their way to make each customer feel unique and special. Whether that’s delivering to a client’s home or even picking it up for them, their approach to customer service is going above and beyond what you’d find at a traditional jewelry store.
The next generation is ready to take Nasr into the future and nurture their community with exceptional products and service.
“We’re the face behind the name,” said Peter and Andrew Nasr.

ARTICLE BY RICHARD GREENE PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAVANNA ROMANOZ Bar Cattle produces beef without hormones, antibiotics

Each morning, Stephen Kirkland hits the pasture to tend to the cattle spread over the few hundred of acres near Sunset, north of Decatur.
For Kirkland, it’s fulfilling a dream of working the ranch either on horseback or in the truck and watching his own cattle graze. “I love cattle. Cattle is definitely a passion,” Kirkland said.

Kirkland and his wife, Kristin, have turned their passion for the cattle business into not only a thriving business, but one that provides customers with locally sourced all-natural, non-hormone treated beef at Z Bar Cattle. After opening their first store in Keller in 2019, the Kirklands opened their Argyle location, 100 Country Club Road, Suite 101, last fall.
“We are grass-fed, grain finished, USDA all-natural, which means no hormones, no antibiotics and no feed additives,” Kirkland said. “We primarily try to feed all Angus cattle. We don’t raise the calves. We buy them from people that raise the calves that fit our program, meaning they send an affidavit with the cattle that they raise with no hormones, no antibiotics and are humanely raised and cruelty free.”

Growing up in Northwest Arkansas, Kirkland knew at a young age he wanted to be a rancher though it was not part of his family. When he married Kristin, he got a chance to work a cow calf operation in Mississippi that was in her family. He later attended TCU’s Ranch Management School and learned the business side of ranching.

The Kirkland’s bought their ranch in 2013 in Sunset. It was shortly after he discovered a source for grass-fed calves for their cattle company from another nearby rancher.
It was around the same time, Kristin was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that would solidify their business model. She discovered the more pure selection of beef helped alleviate some of her symptoms.
“My wife was having some health issues, and we started really examining the products we consumed,” Kirkland said. “The industry wants to produce as much beef as it can as fast and cheap as it can. They will do what they have to do to get to that goal. Just because it’s FDA approved doesn’t mean that it’s good for you."
“We wanted to take a different approach to that and provide wholesome and nutritious products at a fair price.”
Z Bar Cattle get its cattle as yearlings and will keep them fed on grass and grain rations for up to 200 days before harvesting and then eventually to the two stores.
In the store, Kirkland and his staff work to educate customers on the benefits of beef without the added hormones and antibiotics from a local and trusted source.
“We want a relationship with the customers. We slow things down to talk with them,” Kirkland said.
He’s seen several repeat customers.
The spring is his busy season, when he spends the bulk of his time early each day working the pastures with the cattle. He said it takes three to four hours to feed and tend to the cattle’s needs.
He usually then pops into the two stores to help out and also visit with customers.
He’s grateful for the opportunity to share his passion with others.
“You take a little bit of knowledge and couple that with passion and you create a business,” Kirkland said.

Taking a chance
While working three jobs in the early 1990s to make ends meet for his young family, Larry Glover took a lower-level management role with a construction company.

Midway through the project at Texas Instruments, the superintendent over the construction was let go and the company thought about where to go to fill the spot. That’s when Buddy Brumley made the recommendation to give the construction oversight to the young Glover.
“We were about 50 percent into the project, and he got released. They were trying to decide to hire a superintendent to finish the job or what to do,” Glover recalled. “Buddy
said, ‘Larry’s out there. He knows all the subs. Why don’t we just go ahead and have him finish up out there?’
“I kinda got thrown into it — sink or swim. It was about a $6 million project. I ended up finishing it and doing well.”
Brumley’s belief in Glover nearly 30 years ago put him on the path to a successful career in the construction business, overseeing and finishing multi-million dollar projects across the region. The experience also paved the way for Glover to establish his successful LG Contracting, which specializes in high-end residential renovations and building luxury homes from the ground up.
GLOVER APPRECIATES OPPORTUNITY TAKEN BY MENTOR ARTICLE BY RICHARD GREENE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAVANNA ROMANOGlover credits much of his success to his mentor and long-time friend Brumley.
“He gave me the opportunity to prove myself under his guidance,” Glover said. “He taught me everything I know. I’m telling you, from the way to walk onto the job, how to carry yourself and what details to look for. Everything that I utilize today has been instilled by him. I owe him the world.”
After finishing the first project, Brumley came to Glover and told him the company, Con Real, wanted to make him an assistant superintendent to work under him. The catch was he had to quit his other jobs, including a possible chance to work into a full-time role as a mail carrier.
Torn at first, Glover talked with other carriers to get more informed before making a decision. He decided to go into construction full time and train under Brumley.
Glover admits there was a steep learning curve.
“Buddy tells me to this day, there were points in this one-year stint, he didn’t think I was going to cut it,” Glover said.
But Brumley stuck with him and gave him added responsibilities overseeing other superintendents.
He was soon given his first project, building the Boys and Girls Club in Dallas. He proved himself worthy of the assignment.
Glover quickly built a good rapport with clients and a reputation for completing jobs on time and within budget, landing him the task of building the Intel facility at Alliance under a tight deadline. Thinking outside the box to stay on time during a rainy fall, he met his deadline.
That project made Glover a person in demand and a more lucrative job offer came his way with the Ray Skiles Group, where Brumley had already landed. Glover completed several high profile jobs with the firm before tragedy struck with the death of his teenage son.
A bereaved Glover left his career in North Texas, accepting a job to build a mansion in Colorado. When construction on the home was delayed due to a disagreement between the owner and the architect, the owner, knowing Glover’s story, agreed to pay him to wait until construction could start.
“He said he was going to pay my salary for a year like you were working, but I want you to take this time to heal and to recover from this tragedy that hit your family,” Glover recalled.
The project ended up not being finished after the owner lost his wife and had some financial difficulties. After taking on a few jobs in Colorado, Glover came back to Texas and worked for a few different firms before an investor suggested he go out on his own in 2019.
Each year, even during the height of the pandemic, LG Contracting has grown.
“Revenue has doubled each year. We have all kinds of work,” Glover said. “We moved into our new offices in December.”
Even with today’s success, he’s quick to credit Brumley for giving him his start.
“I owe everything to him for bringing me up and giving me the opportunity,” Glover said.

Training to serve
LOCAL GYM HELPS MARINE TRANSFORM BODY, PURPOSE

Lee Carter recalls first arriving at the gym to train with Jeff Dewberry 10 years ago at The Workout Pro.
Hoping to enlist in the Marines, Carter could barely muster three pullups. Thirty-five pounds heavier, Carter now hammers out several pull-ups from the rings in the gym before leaping onto the plyometrics stack, displaying his athleticism.

“I initially trained with Jeff to get in the Marines. I got hooked doing it Jeff’s way,” Carter said. “I feel way better now at 35 than I did then. You can roll back the clock.”
Carter, who is also a certified peace officer, has reenlisted in the Marines.
And six days a week he’s in the gym working out, with the results evident. His one off day is Sunday.
“If you make it part of your daily life, it becomes a routine,” Carter explains. “You can’t buy muscle, mental clarity and health.”
Spotting Carter during the workout on a Saturday morning, Dewberry praises Carter’s commitment.
“He’s definitely the most consistent person I’ve trained,” Dewberry said. “It’s been amazing to see where he’s come from to where he is now.”
Under Dewberry’s guidance, Carter mixes up the workout routine. Early in the week he lifts heavy on his push, pull and legs days.
The push exercises include bench press, incline and decline bench, triceps and shoulder workouts.
The pull days feature lots of pull-ups, the rowing machine, upright rowing and what Carter calls the rewarding finish of biceps work.
The leg day includes squats, leg presses and a couple of variations of calf raises.
Thursday through Saturday feature the same workouts at lighter weights, concentrating on functional fitness with 15 reps.
“You stick with it and stay dedicated, you’ll see results,” Carter said.

Caring for others
Dixon brings Teresa’s House to Argyle
ARTICLE BY RICHARD GREENEAs the son of two pastors, caring for others was deeply ingrained in Godwin Dixon.
“With over 50 pastors in the family, it’s always been a priority doing for others,” Dixon explained. “You do whatever for the Glory of God and give.”
Dixon has dedicated the past 35 years of his life to providing the best care for seniors. Now, working with his partner Teresa, he is set to bring their high standard of assisted living and memory care at Teresa’s House to Argyle. With custom, ranch-style homes with 16 private rooms and common kitchen, dining and living areas, residents enjoy a homelike environment.

Dixon said it is similar to a fraternity or sorority house for seniors.
“Being in a familiar setting works better. We model houses built for seniors,” Dixon said. “With each having 16 rooms, they are big enough to host fun activities, and also small enough you know everyone.”
Their first facility at Craig Ranch in McKinney has garnered stellar reviews for its care and facilities.
Dixon, who lives in the area, said he wanted to bring a world-class facility to Argyle, a community which strives for excellence.
“There are no corners cut,” Dixon said.
Along with the best staffing of licensed care, the Argyle facility features several
enrichment activity centers in the boutique neighborhood. One of the featured facilities is the horse paddock, which offers equine therapy.
“Equine therapy is amazing for seniors, especially for seniors with symptoms of dementia,” Dixon said. “Argyle is perfect for an onsite horse paddock.”
The facility also features a fully furnished vintage kitchen and a classic garage complete with a 1965 Mustang.
“It’s a man cave with a 1965 Mustang,” Dixon explained. “We wanted to have fun activities for men and women.”
Dixon is honored to continue his mission of caring for others.

SMITH, THOMPSON THRIVE ON HELPING OTHERS
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY
BY RICHARD GREENEDevon Thompson quickly points out the work ethic of his business partner Will Smith, which helps drive Premium Poolsmith.
“No one works harder than him,” Thompson said.
Smith started the company in 2018. Thompson joined as a partner in 2022, when the name was changed to Premium Poolsmith.

The business has grown steadily, adding 200 pools to its service roster in the past year. Their clients range from each end of the Metroplex, with several clients in Northlake and Argyle.
“We have a lot of references and more than 100 great reviews,” Smith said.
With each new client, Thompson or Smith greets them on the first visit. If there’s an issue, they are committed to making it right.
“We leave a great impression and want to get their pool right,” Smith said. “If there’s a problem, we will make it right.”
But it’s their family approach with their staff that is at the center of the business.
“The folks that work with us are more of a family,” Thompson said.
Many of these family members were looking for a help up when they arrived at Premium Poolsmith, and Smith and Thompson offered them an opportunity.
Smith, who has battled through nine years of sobriety and is a Marine, prides himself in being able to help others. He said the willingness to offer that assistance is paid back.
“It helps foster loyalty and hard work,” he said.
To Smith and Thompson, it’s tough when a relationship doesn’t work out with an employee.
“We have a passion for helping people. We want to see people grow and thrive,” Thompson said.
“We have at least six members that have turned their lives around. Being affiliated with us, they’ve been able to provide for their families.”
