Thanks To Women In Our Lives

Wives, mothers, sisters, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, gal-pals and stepmothers are some of the most influential women in our lives. With Mother’s Day this month, many eyes are on moms. But it’s not just biological mothers who impact us. It's also about mother figures in the forms of other family members, teachers, friends and neighbors taking awesome steps in our communities. They pour into our lives, making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable. If Mother’s Day is a difficult day for anyone, just know that we’re thinking of you, too, sending you comfort vibes.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned and managed by women in our communities. They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way. On that note, I’d like to extend a special, hard-working business owner and mom, Amali Elabed, owner of Piccolo Trattoria, a Happy Mother’s Day. Thank you for hosting photo sessions, holiday parties and great meals with my family time and time again. We appreciate you!
Please take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call, deliver a special card or get on a video chat with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to remind them how much you love them.

Bucks Beautiful Staff Indicates Tree Replacement Program Begins In May
The 'Pennsylvania Invasive Replace-ive Program' is a new initiative that gives homeowners and landowners the option of removing invasive trees or shrubs and replacing with native trees. This reduces the likelihood of invasive species becoming unwanted “escapees” into neighboring properties, parks and forests. Native trees help diversify urban landscapes. Property owners are encouraged to remove targeted trees and receive up to five free, healthy, native, young replacement trees. Email RA-NRCommunityForest@pa.gov or phone 717.515.0475.
Grounds For Sculpture Awarded $121,000 For Three Key Initiatives
Grounds For Sculpture was awarded significant grants from The Bunbury Fund at the Princeton Area Community Foundation [$100,000]; The Horizon Foundation of New Jersey [$20,000]; and M & T Charitable Foundation [$1,000]. This funding enables GFS staffers to continue capacity-building work; to pilot a social prescribing program through partnering with Penn Medicine Princeton Health; and to bolster participation in the Families First Discovery Pass Program. GFS is a 42-acre, nonprofit sculpture park, arboretum and museum.

THREE GENERATIONS OF FAMILY OPERATIONS

WOMEN OF DISTINCTION: HOLLAND FLOOR COVERING TEAM OFFERS CUSTOMIZED SELECTIONS, PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATIONS
Three generations of women assist Holland Floor Covering customers with selecting style and durability of floors that match their lives. Those who visit either of the company's two locations may meet, or have met them: Judy, 80, Pam, 61, or Sarah, 28.
Founded in 1975 by Judy and David Hansbarger, Holland Floor Covering originally was known as “Hansbarger Quality Carpets." It's currently under the direction of the Hansbargers' three children: Pam Morgan, who shepherds finance, David Hansbarger Jr., who directs installation and new construction, and Roger Hansbarger, who heads up sales and marketing. The family's third generation rounds out the operations team: Sarah Alles (Pam's daughter), Roger Hansbarger Jr., and Mike Miller (David's son-in-law).
Judy Hansbarger
“We have the latest and greatest in floor fashion! We're family-owned, and truly want to help customers make the right and most satisfying flooring decisions.”
Pam earned an accounting degree from Rider University, and joined the family business in 1994 as the company’s controller.
Despite a multiple sclerosis diagnosis at 27 years of age, Holland Floor Covering co-owner Pam powers through work and life. In fact, she says she was a top MS charitable fundraiser for 15 years, and that she's planning to participate in Bike MS City to Shore Ride 2025, a cycling event benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. This fundraising event will take place Sept. 27-28, starting in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and ending in Ocean City.
As a Holland retail sales specialist, Sarah says she truly enjoys bringing customers' visions to life. "I'm also a bit of a product knowledge nerd, so I also love learning about the new floor-related technologies that come out every year now."
The Holland Floor Covering crew offers free sample check-outs; no-interest finance options; and full warranty service.

Women Of Distinction: Linda Mitchell Shows Community's Heart-Felt Kindness Helps Tremendously
Showing Up
For Others
"Together, we can do so much," asserts Linda Mitchell, executive director of NAC Have A Heart Foundation based in Newtown.
She says the Foundation's mission is to identify and raise awareness through both advocacy and fundraising regarding community causes that affect the quality of life of local residents.
While the Foundation assists many causes, its board members and supporters have focused on raising research funds for ALS to help find a cure for the disease, as well as supporting advocacy for health-related causes that affect the terminally ill. Other causes supported include autism, cancer, literacy needs and reversing opioid usage.

To date, Linda says more than $5 million was raised for Augie’s Quest through Matt’s Mission and the Newtown Athletic Club. She adds that financial donations can be directed to specific causes.
Founder of the foundation and Board Chairman is Jim Worthington, NAC owner. Board of directors are: Matt Bellina, Cailtin Bellina, John Cordisco, Esq., and Brian Herman.
For three-plus years, the Foundation's supporters have been dedicated to their "52k in 52 Weeks" initiative, donating $1,000-$5,000 each week to a different local charity or nonprofit. Linda says these organizations support a range of causes, including food banks, homeless shelters, animal rescues, youth programs and illness-related charities.
She explains, "There's so much unmet need in our own community that many people don’t even realize exists. Our mission is to ‘Spread the Wealth and Spread the Word’ while raising awareness for these organizations and inspiring others to support them through donations, volunteerism and more.”
Linda says local charities or nonprofits can apply for donations on the Foundation's website.
Each year, Have A Heart Foundation hosts an annual fundraising gala. Linda says this year the event will be held in September. "This event is attended by hundreds of local community supporters who appreciate supporting their own community through the work of the NAC Have a Heart Foundation."
Additionally, the Foundation's volunteers are developing an Equine Therapy Program for veterans at their newly established Village Farm, where horses and other animals are housed just 1 mile from the NAC in Langhorne. "This program will become available to veterans throughout Bucks County and beyond," Linda assures.

FA S H ION FOREVERYONE
Every day is different in the high-fashion world of Alisa Frederico, owner and style director at Dressing Jane.
A Newtown resident, Alisa originally founded the company as a personal styling business after leaving a product development career at Urban Outfitters 10 years ago. She found her niche in simplifying the sometimes intimidating world of fashion and showing women how to look and feel good based on varied budgets.
WOMEN OF DISTINCTION: NEWTOWN FASHION MAVEN ALISA FREDERICO TURNS TRENDS INTO EFFORTLESS, AFFORDABLE STYLES
ARTICLE BY MADELINE MARRIOTT

Over time, her business expanded naturally into other venues. Now, she spends much of her time as an on-air contributor to television programs, including Fox29 Philadelphia and Fox5 New York.
“One day I might be styling for a TV segment, the next, I’m on QVC as a brand ambassador, scouting trends, or creating content for social media,” Alisa explains. “I also work directly with brands on consulting and collaborations.”
Alisa’s three decades in the fashion game have given her keen foresight into future trends.
“You start to see patterns emerge,” Alisa explains. “Social media plays a huge role in accelerating trends, and I also pay close attention to what’s happening in street style, pop culture and even interiors, because fashion and lifestyle trends often go hand in hand.”
For this summer, Alisa's keeping an eye out for relaxed silhouettes, playful details and nostalgic influences. She expects a season full of greens, blues, creams and plenty of brown.
“Boho-inspired layering is making a comeback, but with a more elevated and luxe aesthetic; think flowing fabrics, intricate textures and a refined, ethereal vibe,” she says. “At the same time, timeless, refined classics will remain strong, with a nod to the 90s and early 2000s.”

CAKES AND COMMUNITY
Roxanne Fitzgerald’s love affair with Nothing Bundt Cakes began two decades ago when she gifted the treats to clients as a pharmaceutical sales rep in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Now, she's the proud owner and operator of two Nothing Bundt Cakes franchises, including the Newtown branch, which became the first in Pennsylvania in 2017. After spending several years at home with her three children, she says she was looking to jump back into working outside the home, and learned that Nothing Bundt Cakes was expanding toward the East Coast after success in the West.
“My husband and I just looked at each other like, ‘Could we do this?’” she recalls. “It was a lot of work to get the store open — two years of business plans and showing them that we could be successful at this location.”
The Newtown store at 2838 S. Eagle Road now employs more than 20 people, including five full-time workers, and everything from the cakes to the signature buttercream frosting is made on-site. Roxanne has a hand in daily operations, joining the baking team to meet increased demand during busy holiday seasons and spending a few hours a day in her favorite part of the job: interacting with guests.
“Besides our product, our customer service is what sets us apart,” Roxanne says. “It’s not just about selling someone a cake. It’s about connecting to our guests and to the community.”
Roxanne says she finds herself personally aligned with the company’s tagline: “bring the joy.” It meshes with the “service above self” motto of the Newtown Rotary Club, a local branch of the international service organization of which she is a member.
“We give back immensely to the community, including assisting with fundraising, and I was always brought up that way. I love giving more than getting,” she says. “I’ve had the opportunity to support a lot of different organizations and partner with food pantries,
so there’s no waste in our bakery. Anything that we’re not able to sell, we donate.”
The bakery offers the team's individual bundtlets, smaller bundtinis and full-size customized cakes, in addition to party supplies, decor and other knickknacks available at the store.
In addition to the beloved flavors always available at the store, such as chocolate chocolate chip, classic vanilla, white chocolate raspberry and red velvet, the flavor of the month for May is lemon blueberry, a refreshing twist on the always-popular lemon.

WOMEN OF DISTINCTION: MARISSA CHRISTIE, PRESIDENT AND CEO, UNITED WAY OF BUCKS COUNTY RELISHES RESULTS THAT COME FROM UNITY
Changing Lives

For Good

Marissa Christie affirms she's always believed in the power of unity. She now shepherds that concept as president and CEO of the United Way of Bucks County team, who solve urgent community challenges and ensure local families have resources they need.
"A great example of unification is our UW HELP Center, which is a collaboration between us, Bucks County Opportunity Council and St. Mary Medical Center, with generous support from Penn Community Bank," she explains. "We distribute millions of dollars’ worth of essential goods, brand-new and free of charge, to thousands of Bucks County residents in need of a little help."
The HELP Center provides essential household items, such as clothing, shoes, hygiene items, furniture, linens and home goods, while giving guests dignified shopping experiences. "We want everyone we serve to feel welcome and valued as members of our community," Marissa says.
She adds that she's particularly passionate about supporting ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households, which are hard-working families who earn too much to qualify for most assistance programs, but too little to remain financially stable. "These families are one unexpected expense away from crisis," she notes. "That's where we at UW come in. Our work isn’t just about emergency aid. It’s about long-term stability. We stay connected with our ALICE families for at least a year to ensure the support we provide has lasting impact."
United Way’s legacy of bringing people together for the greater good continues to inspire Marissa’s leadership. "We were founded in 1887 by a woman, a priest, two ministers and a rabbi. It sounds like the start of a joke, but it’s true!" she says. "That same spirit of collaboration drives us today, 138 years later."
For those considering a career in nonprofit leadership, Marissa encourages learning from those in the field. "Talk to people doing the work. Understand the challenges, find mentors and take advantage of both formal and informal learning opportunities. This work is hard, but it changes lives, including your own."

Eileen Steele Slezak, business manager and co-owner/president of Rick Steele’s Gulf Service on Newtown-Yardley Road, confirms the business has been in her family for three generations after being operated in 1970 by her parents, Rick and Patricia "Patsy," as proud Newtown natives.
Enthusiasm about all-things vehicular actually runs throughout this family. Eileen says her uncle and godfather, Dick Steele, owned the gas station across town at 19 North Sycamore St., which now is operated by her cousin, Dave Burns Jr., under the name of Burns Auto Repair.
From Eileen's office at 695 Newtown Yardley Road, she says the experienced and detail-oriented crew handles vehicle repairs, gas fill-ups, air-conditioning service, fixing brakes, electrical maintenance, lube services and alignments.
"Over the years, we went from a two-car to five-car garage. We intend to stay full-service, a bit old-school, with a full-time pump attendant. And, we want our customers to ask as many questions as needed to fully understand repairs," she adds.
Eileen's local roots also run deep, starting as a Council Rock High School graduate. She has a degree in small business management from Goldey-Beacom College. She served as a children’s religious education instructor at St. Andrew Catholic Church, and during 2000 co-founded locally-based The Shamrock Girls, which assists people in crisis and individuals fighting life-threatening health conditions, especially cancer.

In February, the Shamrock group celebrated their Silver Jubilee. "We're so grateful for everyone's faith and support all these years," Eileen states.
"I've had incredible people in my life," she continues. "On the business side, Jim Garner worked with our family since 1973. My brother, Richard Steele, has been instrumental for 30-plus years. And my sisters, as co-owners, Marlene Steele and Maryann Boccelli, have been wonderfully encouraging. We also have such a great and honest work team."
However, Eileen assures that much of her day-to-day motivation comes from her daughters. "They inspire me to do my best at being a strong woman. And we take life one mile at a time."
