Mary Roosevelt lost her beloved husband of 25 years, James Roosevelt, the eldest son of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in 1991. In 1992, Jim Doti, president of Chapman College (later University), and the Chapman board renamed Founder’s Hall the James and Mary Roosevelt Hall. Mary, still grieving, was asked for a photo of the couple to create a portrait to hang in the hall’s lobby. She has always wished she had given the school another photo. A new photo now hangs in Roosevelt Hall, thanks to Women of Chapman Past President Kathy Hamilton, who asked Mary for a photo she preferred and had it created. The portrait, along with important memorabilia that Mary gave the school of James’ service in the Marine Corps as one of Carlson’s Raiders and as a U.S. Congressman, completes the focus on one of America’s heroes.
