Ladies

Welcome to our women's issue! I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. Our wives, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.

And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

My wife inspires me daily with her unwavering dedication to both our family and her work. She balances grace and grit, pouring love into our home while excelling professionally, reminding me what true strength and purpose look like.

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Murfreesboro's women business leaders.

They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

Sincerely,

May 2025

Capturing Light and Life

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER PAIGE ROBINSON TURNS PASSION INTO FULL-TIME DREAM

ARTICLE BY MATILYN JENNINGS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAIGE ROBINSON PHOTOGRAPHY

For Paige Robinson, photography has been a lifelong passion that blossomed from childhood snapshots into a full-fledged career. "Photography has been a huge part of my life since I was a little girl," she says. What began as a personal brand element during college marketing classes has now grown into a thriving full-time business. "I never dreamed it would turn into what it has now," she reflects.

As a natural light portrait photographer, Paige specializes in capturing people in sunlit settings that feel authentic and timeless. Her editing style is bright, true-to-color, and minimal — a reflection of her commitment to preserving real-life moments. “The clients that I serve are looking for their memories captured in an authentic, timeless way that they can cherish forever.”

Running a creative business comes with its challenges, particularly balancing a flexible yet demanding schedule. “I’m very busy on weekends with shoots, and weekdays are full of editing and

admin,” she explains. To stay grounded, Paige sticks to designated work hours and daily to-do lists, tackling everything from emails to social media. Her business degree has proven invaluable in managing the behind-the-scenes responsibilities of entrepreneurship.

One area that has recently sparked her excitement is branding sessions. “I love working with other business owners to bring their brand’s vision to life,” she says. Paige believes consistent, high-quality photos are a worthwhile investment that builds trust and elevates a brand’s image.

Looking ahead, Paige is eager to expand her offerings. She’s working toward building her own studio, growing her senior rep team, and collaborating with more businesses. “I’m always looking to try new things and do shoots I’ve never done before,” she says. With gratitude for how far she’s come, Paige is focused on growth, creativity, and continuing to help others capture the moments that matter most.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY COURTNEY MITCHELL, THE WEBB SCHOOL

HELLO POLLY!

The Webb School Hires First Female Head in 155-Year History

The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, has a lot of history under its belt. It was founded in 1870 by renowned educator and former U.S. Senator Sawney Webb. Today it is the South’s oldest continuous co-ed boarding school, with over 400 students in grades 6-12 hailing from 12 domestic states and 25 countries. A new historical moment was made in recent months as The Webb School named Dr. Polly Parker as its 14th Head of School. In the 155-year history of the school, this is the first female to hold this office.

The school boasts strong ties to the Murfreesboro community, with over 25% of the student population being day-students from Murfreesboro families. As such, we wanted to get to know Dr. Parker more and introduce her to our readers.

CONGRATULATIONS! WHAT HAS BEEN ON YOUR MIND SINCE BEING NAMED THE NEXT HEAD AT THE WEBB SCHOOL?

Thank you. I’ve been really excited about this journey. I’ve already had many meetings with the Board Chair and the current Head of School. Plus, I have also visited campus a few times to meet with faculty and students. There is so much to learn about the history of the school and the current community dynamics.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO EDUCATION AS A CAREER PATH?

My parents and sister are all educators, and I vowed to not become an educator. I went to college and grad school to be a social worker. Every single job I had from the minute I got out of grad school was in a school – I just kept finding myself there. I finally said, “Okay, I think I’m meant to be in a school.” I then took more leadership and education courses, gained certifications, and now I know it is where I was meant to be.

“I’m eager to work with the excellent faculty and staff present at The Webb School. It’s such an honor to have the opportunity to invest in students’ lives so that they can strive to become the leaders of tomorrow.”

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHTS UP UNTIL NOW?

For me, I feel most proud when the people I’m working with are aspiring to be leaders and I’m supporting them and helping them to get to the next place they want to go. Hopefully, they are staying and working with me, but if not, I want to be a person that helps them aspire to the next thing. I’m eager to work with the excellent faculty and staff present at The Webb School. It's such an honor to have the opportunity to invest in students’ lives so that they can strive to become the leaders of tomorrow.

THE WEBB SCHOOL IS KNOWN FOR ITS STRONG DIVERSITY.  HOW IMPORTANT IS THAT TOPIC TO YOU?

You are right! Webb’s campus community has 40% who identify as a student of color, hailing from 25 countries.  So, there are a lot of cultures, worldviews, and perspectives that our students get to interact with.  Most of my previous schools have been fairly diverse. From my experience, it’s important to talk about and understand differences. Every student should feel like they belong and are valued – it’s very important to me.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE?

I’m very collaborative. I want to hear what people are thinking and what their opinions are.  I recognize that to run a school it takes a team of people making decisions. Everybody has different skillsets, and we need to acknowledge that. However, I do like to move things along, so I’m often a pacesetter when I lead.

IS THERE ANYTHING IN YOUR MOVE TO MIDDLE TENNESSEE THAT YOU ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO?

We have lived in a lot of places, and so we are excited to learn as much as possible about the region and see as much as we can. It will be fun to learn and explore the beauty of Tennessee.

WE HEAR THAT YOU ARE A DOG LOVER. IS THAT TRUE?

Yes, guilty as charged. We own eight dogs – seven Bernese Mountain Dogs and one old Akita. We used to only have Akitas, and we did some research about what kind of dog you could bring into a family of Akitas. Bernese Mountain Dog was the only one. We fell in love and kept adding more to the family. I’ve always been a dog person. We always had dogs in the family when I was growing up but never as many as we currently have.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE YOU OFTEN COME BACK TO?

One quote that I often have painted in my office is by renowned computer scientist Grace Hopper.  She said, "The most dangerous phrase in the language is, 'We've always done it this way.'" We need to be brave and not shut ourselves off from innovating or trying different things, even if those things seem scary.

The Webb School’s current Head of School, Ken Cheeseman, is moving to North Carolina to be closer to his grandchildren and to begin serving as Head of St. David’s School in Raleigh.  He shared these affirmations: “Dr. Polly Parker is an excellent choice to lead Webb.  She is a strong leader with a particular skillset that is needed at this time.  It’s been a joy to work with her closely in recent months to ensure that the torch is passed seamlessly.”

Dr. Polly Parker, her husband Brett, and their eight dogs are in the process of moving to Bell Buckle, with her tenure as Head of School officially beginning on July 1.

Celebrating Unstoppable Spirit

Leading, Motivating and Giving Back in Ways That Matter Most

Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation is fortunate to be staffed by remarkable women who dedicate themselves each day to enriching our community. With more than 500 full-time and part-time employees, these women are leaders, mentors, and changemakers. Here’s a closer look at just a few of the inspiring individuals helping shape our parks system and improve lives across the city.

Rachel Singer, Assistant Director, currently oversees Outdoor Murfreesboro, Natural Resources, Cultural Arts, and Historic Preservation, managing a team of more than 80 employees. Rachel began her career with the department in 2003 as an assistant program coordinator. At the time, she only planned to stay until she could become a state park ranger. But that plan quickly changed. She discovered that Parks and Recreation offered her a unique opportunity to be creative, to serve the public, and to make a lasting impact. More than two decades later, Rachel is still here—and still driven by the same passion.

Rachel thrives in the outdoors and can often be found kayaking the river, hiking Barfield’s backcountry trails, or rescuing injured wildlife. “I’ve always had a deep connection with animals,” she explains. “By integrating them into educational programming,

we help people appreciate the role they play in our ecosystem, which leads to stronger conservation efforts.” For Rachel, the most rewarding part of her job is supporting her staff. She’s committed to giving her team what they need to succeed, and she takes great pride in seeing them grow.

Brittany Garrett, Athletics Superintendent, brings contagious energy and a deep understanding of the work. She has been with Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation since 2010 and has held nearly every position along the way—from scorekeeper and camp counselor to referee and program coordinator. That hands-on experience gives her unique insight and makes her an empathetic and empowering leader.

Brittany oversees all of Murfreesboro’s athletic programming, including cheerleading, basketball, volleyball, softball, and the inclusive Miracle League. She also manages the 170-acre Richard

Rachel Singer

Siegel Soccer Complex, which hosts some of the region’s top tournaments. Of all her accomplishments, Brittany is especially proud of Advantage Sports, the city’s adaptive athletics program for individuals with special needs. “Working in athletics isn’t just about games—it’s about creating opportunities for growth, teamwork, and belonging,” she said. “It’s about making a difference. We’re like a family.”

Jasmine Duke, Facility Coordinator at Adams Tennis Complex, joined the department in August 2023. A lifelong

user of parks and recreation programs, she sees her role as a full-circle moment. “I grew up using community centers, playing sports, and feeling like I belonged,” she said. “Now I get to give that experience back to others.”

Jasmine’s favorite part of the job is building personal connections with members and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. She believes that everyone deserves a recreational outlet and a sense of community. As a former athlete, she also loves the energy that surrounds tournaments and special events. Whether it’s chatting with a longtime member or greeting out-of-town visitors, she takes pride in showing people the best of Murfreesboro and what ATC has to offer.

These women—and so many others across the department—are the heartbeat of Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation. Through their leadership, passion, and dedication, they are shaping spaces that bring people together, promote well-being, and elevate the quality of life for everyone in our city.

From Stem To Vase:

TRANSFORMING FLORALS INTO ART

Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings.

As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the superstitions

associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language.

In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.

Florals and Fruit

Add an extra burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase to preserve their shape. Fill the surrounding space with water and then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keep the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.

Hanging Florals

For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact. No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.

Flower Frogs

Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.

Plumbing problems can be a headache, but handling common issues yourself can save time and money. Whether it's a clogged drain, leaky faucet, or running toilet, here are expert tips to help you know when to roll up your sleeves—and when to call in a pro.

HOW TO CLEAR A CLOGGED DRAIN SAFELY

Clogged drains are common. Here are safe, effective methods:

• Use a plunger: A cup plunger works for sinks; use a flange plunger for toilets. Create a seal and apply steady pressure.

• Try a drain snake: A plumber’s auger can reach deeper clogs.

• Baking soda and vinegar: Pour ½ cup of baking soda, then 1 cup of vinegar. Wait 15 minutes and flush with hot water.

• Avoid chemical cleaners: These can harm pipes and health— stick to natural or mechanical options.

FIXING LEAKY FAUCETS AND RUNNING TOILETS

Leaky Faucet:

1. Shut off water under the sink.

2. Remove the handle.

3. Replace the washer or O-ring.

4. Reassemble and check for leaks.

Running Toilet:

1. Inspect the flapper and replace if worn.

2. Check the float—it shouldn't be too high.

3. Make sure the fill tube directs water properly.

DIY VS. PROFESSIONAL HELP

DIY Fixes:

• Minor clogs

• Faucet washer replacement

• Toilet flapper adjustments

Call a Pro For:

• Major leaks or burst pipes

• Sewer backups

• Low water pressure

• Water heater issuesIf problems persist, hiring a plumber can prevent bigger, costlier damage.

From clogs to emergencies, Mr. Handyman offers reliable plumbing services to keep your home running smoothly.

Preventive Plumbing Maintenance

• Prevent frozen pipes: Insulate and let faucets drip in cold weather.

• Keep drains clear: Use strainers and flush with hot water.

• Check for leaks: Regularly inspect sinks and toilets.

• Flush your water heater annually to reduce sediment buildup.

HEART,HAIR , ANDHOME

At Bombshells Hair Studio, talent runs deep—and so do the roots of community, family, and passion for the craft. Stylists Bethany Warrick and Hannah Beasley are shining examples of how a love for people and purpose transforms a salon into a second home.

For Bethany, hairstyling is quite literally in her DNA. “I didn’t really have a choice—doing hair chose me!” she says. Her mother, the owner of Bombshells, inspired her from an early age. Bethany attended cosmetology school at Oakland High and started working at Bombshells in 2015 after helping at the front desk and behind the scenes. Today, she thrives on creating bold transformations, especially grey blending and short cuts. As a mom, she keeps life running smoothly with night-before prep and a lot of prayer and patience. Her advice to new moms in the industry? “Your baby will never be little again. Don’t feel guilty for shifting your schedule. God, family, and yourself come first—then work.”

Hannah’s path to Bombshells was less direct but just as heartfelt. At 16, she began sweeping hair for her stylist and instantly loved the salon atmosphere. Though she initially pursued a degree in early childhood education, working front desk at a local salon reignited her passion for beauty. After graduating from Paul Mitchell, she joined Bombshells as an associate, where she credits the mentorship of senior stylists—especially Michelle—for helping her grow. Hannah now specializes in lived-in blonding and enjoys educating clients on how to care for their hair.

Meet Bethany and Hannah of Bombshells Hair Studio

Hannah Beasley

As a mom herself, Hannah leans on structure, faith, and snacks. “Stick to a routine and always pack snacks,” she laughs. More seriously, she emphasizes the importance of spiritual and self-care: “Without being poured into, you have nothing left to pour out—at home or at work.”

Both stylists agree that the Bombshells community is unlike any other. “It’s my family,” says Hannah. “There’s no competition—just support.” Bethany and Hannah value the flexibility, encouragement, and connection that Bombshells offers both behind the chair and at home. Whether transforming hair or listening to life stories, their impact goes far beyond the mirror.

Each day, they’re not just helping people look their best—they’re making them feel seen, heard, and cared for. With grace, humor, and heart, Bethany and Hannah show how beauty and belonging go hand in hand at Bombshells Hair Studio. Their dedication, artistry, and authentic connection remind us all that great hair is just the beginning of something even more meaningful.
