Readers.

This month we celebrate 100 issues of Missoula Valley Lifestyle! It's hard to believe that it's been about eight and a half years since our first issue because what they say is true: time flies when you're having fun.

Several weeks ago, I pulled dozens of past issues from my shelves and brought them all outside to my patio. There I sat, thumbing through each one for a whole afternoon with my son, who loaded the pea gravel at our feet into some toy dump trucks. Some covers were matte finish, some were glossy, some were thin and others thick, and all of them had teasers that promised so much of the brightness that Missoula offers to its people.

Of course, I don't need to remind you of this because you've been here all along, dearest reader. And if you haven't, we welcome you! On page 16 I do quite a bit of reminiscing, but I saved this space to thank our readers and advertisers because it feels more intimate here. I'm speaking directly to you when I say thank you for allowing us to exist and share the stories of our community. Our stories are our legacies, our warmth, and all of the things that we aim to celebrate, and I hope this issue feels like a continuation of that. We are tremendously grateful for the support that we receive.

This magazine has indeed become a member of my family, and that means the staff has, too. I know I'll spend some days with the many words that our writers submit, and then I'll spend some hours discussing businesses, people, and products that excite us. These staff meetings are a magical space for admitting our love and passion for Missoulians. If you have a story to share, we want to tell it.

So, to celebrate all of the good times gone by and the ones up ahead, our team met at Blue Mountain recreation area on a gorgeous day in early May for a photoshoot. The star of the show was a tiered confetti cake from Bernice's Bakery, and yes, it did remain completely unscathed until it was finally cut into at Paradise Falls, where we ate, drank, and were merry over such an occasion.

Here's to 100 more!

THE POWER OF SUPPLEMENTING with my HMB

myHMB delivers exactly what the body’s working muscles need — HMB. Scientifically known as β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate, HMB is produced naturally in our bodies during the metabolism of the essential amino acid leucine. Leucine is found in virtually all protein — we eat it every day in foods like soybeans, beef, alfalfa and fish, and some proteins have more leucine than others.

It is difficult if not impossible to consume enough protein with supplementation or a healthy diet alone to achieve the effective amount of HMB. With myHMB, you can get the muscle-building power of HMB directly — this provides noticeable, long term benefits.

100 ISSUES OF MISSOULA VALLEY LIFESTYLE

Our staff and community celebrates the memories that led to this milestone

When I first met Missoula Valley Lifestyle magazine, it didn’t have a website. It actually didn’t exist in the world yet. Instead, it lived on Craigslist by way of an “ISO” plea for writers, photographers, etc. I was a writer looking for pages to call home in my new home state of Montana so I took on a “Summer Fun” related article.

That was in the spring of 2015.

Today, looking back at the last eight and a half years offers the perfect taste of nostalgia. I remember the stories about local artists and organizations, the businesses that started because a trusted friend told them to go for it. I remember travel stories and learning where everyone was from—how we come from a fingertip sweeping the globe. I also remember hilarious and cringeworthy times when things didn’t work out according to plan, like our musical subject—our feature story—having a scheduling conflict that put their availability past our deadline, which was in two days. We had a major forest fire that year and a new story was born: “Up Through the Ashes.” And then of course

there was the time that we had a doctor waiting at a photoshoot for someone who never even received the email with the meet-up information. She was due to deliver a baby just moments after we snapped the last shot. Does anyone remember when we printed a photo of a woman wearing a popular Statriot Designs T-shirt that said “Mon-(insert profanity here)-tana” in our first year? Yeah, me neither (blushes).

But the positivity of these pages has remained a constant source of feeling good, which as we learned in 2020 is really important. Our pages have always been about the redemption, the big risk, the bravery, and the courage. These stories—hundreds of them—have championed those who had a story and chose to share it with Missoula and beyond. I’ve had people say, “That’s my hairdresser!” Or, “That’s my neighbor, my baker, my real estate agent.” We do not get this same local flavor from national magazines or podcasts or newspapers. We get it from where we live and who we live among.

Michael Tucker and wife Mysta Tucker

I love that we’ve had people who we’ve approached for a story and whose response was, “Oh, I don’t find myself worthy of a story.” And then they end up opening a second business location a year or two later, or they finally build that website and start taking orders because the Farmers Market or the MADE Fair sold them out of product and they needed to quit their day job to make more. I love that we’ve snapped a portrait of them in words and images and it’s become part of their history.

I think any of us in the small but mighty staff of Missoula Valley Lifestyle would agree that it’s a true joy to see this community grow into the vision we keep dreaming up for ourselves. We see a hole in the fabric—a need for a specific thing—and then someone will step up to the plate with the answer. As a community, we focus on the positivity and we thrive there.

As the editor, it’s been fun to see the overall design shift and evolve. The slight differences in type styles or white spaces are the equivalent to fluctuating facial expressions. Our face is ever-changing but at a glance, we’re still very much the same as we started. The most rewarding part of this journey thus far, hands down, has been following this talented group of writers and photographers. We all experience growing pains and we all miss a deadline (or two!) along the way but we are always in pursuit of the best capture, whether it be in the lens or on the page. And I’m grateful to have such a passionate crew still on the ship.

“I was only going to try it for a year,” said publisher Michael Tucker. “But the community’s response to the stories we’ve shared was overwhelming, and it’s still that way.”

If you’ve been featured in Missoula Valley Lifestyle, tag us on Instagram (@MVLmagazine) or Facebook (Missoula Valley Lifestyle) so we can relive all of these stories!

HORSE SANCTUARY CONTINUES THEIR MISSION OF PROVIDING

PEACE AND PERMANENCE DESPITE PRESSING NEEDS

“He raised my kids, my sister-in-law’s kids, and the neighbor’s kids.” Shari Montana, director and founder of River Pines Horse Sanctuary, isn’t talking about a man but a gelding—a horse. More than forty years ago, Shari and her husband Michael rescued the horse from starvation, and in return, he gave them everything.

Many of the horses that live at River Pines Horse Sanctuary have come from misfortune, some endured abuse or neglect, some were just unwanted with seemingly nothing to offer. This sanctuary is their refuge—a forever-home for equines that aren’t of any use for working or sporting disciplines.

But all equines evoke a sense of curiosity and fascination in people, despite what they’re used for. Shari’s patience and her degree in Research Psychology intuitively encouraged a new process in which the unwanted horse learns to not only trust people again, but to actually cultivate a desire for connection. It may have started with that gelding and another unfortunate soul, but today the sanctuary in Maclay Flat continues the mission of the first two rescues by welcoming in horses, ponies, burros, and donkeys that have no other choices. Maybe the owners had health or financial crisis, or maybe they were forced to move and couldn’t take the equines with them. Whatever the case may be, Shari waits with open arms.

GIVING BACK | LIFE + CULTURE
24

Two of River Pines Horse Sanctuary’s Arabians came from land adjacent to Missoula’s dump. Their former owners lost their land and simply set them free. They ran with an elk herd for a few years until Shari and her volunteers were asked to capture the misfit horses that were damaging neighboring yards. Without Shari and Michael’s intervention, these animals would likely face a gruesome end.

“These horses [would] go to the canner, or the ‘kill pens’ as we call it. You can get a lot of money for them per pound. They go to Canada or Mexico. It’s a long

drive where they’re not well cared for,” said Shari. “They’re loose in a trailer, they knock each other down, they stomp each other to death. If they fall, they can’t get up because there’s no room. It’s horrendous. It’s torture really.”

River Pines Horse Sanctuary is a safe place for these resilient steeds to live out the rest of their lives, but it’s more than that. Through the use of a trust-based, positive-reinforcement method of rehabilitation and training, these formerly unwanted equines are able to generalize and eventually give back to Missoula

through various community involvement programs structured by the organization. RPHS’s website offers a diverse menu of spiritual, emotional, and physical wellbeing opportunities such as suicide prevention.

“We are teaching people to connect with horses. That allows them to connect with each other,” said Shari. A horsemanship program for foster kids incorporates an obstacle course, games and an art project that, together, helps children learn techniques for self-regulation—something that is a big deal for both humans and animals that come from trauma.

Shari, who also happens to be a Reiki master, enjoys guiding singles and couples through meditation where one of her more spiritual four-legged gurus stands perfectly still as the meditator relaxes into the message. “When you have one hand on the horse, you get an oxytocin hit, which allows you to experience connectivity and wellbeing. It’s calming, it lowers your heart rate, your blood pressure, it even enhances learning.”

For those of us who don’t have horses of our own but would love to enjoy the company and play of a mustang, there are two

GIVING BACK | LIFE + CULTURE CONTINUED > 26
27 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/MISSOULAVALLEY AUGUST 2023

great options. The first is “Horse Time,” which can be scheduled for $1 per minute. The second is volunteering. Because of the trust-based protocol used while working with the herd, every volunteer is systematically trained before ever touching a horse. Everyone (with or without previous equine skills) starts from the beginning. First, volunteers come out and work with other volunteers to learn the ropes.

“Most volunteers don’t know anything about horses, so there’s a big training program that goes on. This is what you do, this is what you don’t do,” said Michael. “They’re prey animals and we’re predators, so it’s about teaching people how to act around horses so they become friends.”

Next, comes grooming, which is a specific method in itself. Volunteers are taught how to go over each horse several times with different grooming tools, paying attention to any nicks, scrapes or possible injuries. This is especially vital to the upkeep of the rescued horses because Shari and Michael simply can’t keep up on daily health checks themselves. Last, helpers are trained to learn and pay attention to language signals that horses give off so that they don’t lose a trust opportunity.

While volunteers are an integral part of River Pines Horse Sanctuary, so are donors. Hay is almost three times more per ton than it was a few years ago. Senior horsefeed is five to six times that. Vet bills are a constant, especially with an aging population. Currently, a pressing need for adjacent land and shelter materials is overwhelming. But rehabilitated horses have the capacity to rehabilitate people, and River Pines Horse Sanctuary will continue its mission with the help of our community.

Shining a Light on Parenthood with Western Montana Lighting

INSPIRED BY | HOME + DESIGN
32

Lighting isn’t usually a priority on the to-do list before a new baby or puppy arrives. And, quite honestly, it doesn’t get the attention it deserves well afterward, as those children and animals grow. (And lighting is everything!) Drew Mihelish and her trusted team members Amanda and Lauren come together to offer some lighting tips that could help with basic daily routine.

CHELSEA: CAN YOU OFFER ANY DESIGN INSIGHT THAT MIGHT BE HELPFUL TO THOSE WHO HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN AT HOME? MAYBE CHOOSING A BEDROOM ON THE EAST OR WEST SIDE OF A HOME WHERE NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL LIGHT DON’T COMPETE WITH EACH OTHER?

Amanda: Bare bulb lights and clear glass might be super trendy right now but as you are putting your newborn to sleep it can be glaring and way too bright. I would highly recommend getting a light fixture with either a fabric shade or frosted glass. I would also opt for a warm 27K LED bulb since the warmer glow of a 27k mimics the warm glow of dusk or candlelight that helps create a cozy atmosphere.

Lauren: A dimmer can also be extremely beneficial since the more light you introduce in the middle of the night the more it cues your little one to fully wake up. By keeping the light low it tells them that this is not wake-up time but feeding or swaddling time. Nightlights can be so helpful, especially the kind that are built into the outlets, keeping you from crashing into things in the night, which helps facilitate smooth and calm transitions.

CHELSEA: IF YOU’RE A PET OWNER, IT’S LIKELY THAT YOU’VE HAD TO JUMP OUT OF BED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT TO LET A PUPPY GO DO THEIR BUSINESS OUTSIDE, OR CHECK ON THE CURIOUS SOUND YOUR CAT IS MAKING IN THE GARAGE. WHAT CAN HELP US SEE WHERE OUR FEET ARE AT THIS TIME OF NIGHT WITHOUT FLIPPING ON A BRIGHT ROOM LIGHT?

Amanda : I have been seeing a lot more people with kiddos putting in step lights with photocells so they

don’t have to worry about their little ones walking around at night in the complete darkness. I can see this working well for nighttime trips with your fur baby also. This is also a great way to have wayfinding without using an overhead light. Another option would be opting to have a nightlight built into your hallway receptacles.

Lauren: The Satco 65/901 is a great addition for pets. It is a flood light with a motion sensor and a camera. You can use the camera function to check the yard before you let your pet out to make sure there is no other wildlife out there wandering around. It can also assist you when you can’t find your furry friend in the night as it also has a night vision function. It provides security without a subscription. Just install, set up the app, and you are ready to go!

CHELSEA: GOING TO BED CAN BE A FEAT FOR TODDLERS. THEY OFTEN HAVE A LONG (VERY LONG) LAUNDRY LIST OF ITEMS THEY NEED OR WANT TO DO BEFORE BED—TO AVOID GOING TO BED, OF COURSE. DO YOU HAVE ANY LIGHTING THAT CAN HELP “SET THE MOOD” FOR THE BEDTIME ROUTINE?

Lauren: Smart bulbs are a wonderful tool to help our little ones with their circadian rhythms. Setting different color temperatures for different times of the day will let them know when we are getting up and energized for the start of the day all the way down to “it is time to be quiet and get ready for bed.” You can use the app that accompanies the bulbs to set your scenes, so your bulbs work with your schedule.

A word from Drew: I still want to drive home the importance of calling or setting appointments with our lighting consultants to address whatever concerns you may have. Depending on the space and the use of the space will determine many factors that go into lighting the room correctly for each consumer. We are here to help assist you with the smallest of details that can make the largest of impacts.

To Be a Kid Again

GLAMPING AT THE RESORT AT PAWS UP IS A CHILDHOOD DREAM

Take your kid to a luxury resort. I know that sounds like bogus rookie parent advice but seriously, take them with you.

In May, my husband and I buckled our 2 year old son into his car seat and hit the scenic road that leads to the Resort at Paws Up. The pines, the gravel, the deep orange glow of a setting sun—it all hit differently when we made that righthand turn onto Sunset Hill Road. Any ordinary day of parenting can become extraordinary when glamping is on the agenda.

Luxury camping is taking everything we love about traditional camping and pairing it with the conveniences of a well adorned dream home. Electricity, air-conditioning, heat, fine linens, a private master bath and—the best part—a butler at our beck and call. The safari-style tents feature ample windows that zip open for the grand reveal of our pristine surroundings and several exquisite spots to rest our limbs at any time of day.

At our North Bank tent, a spacious balcony overlooked the Blackfoot River. We were quickly

reminded of the simple joy that time away from home can offer—using the zipper on the window, listening to the sound of the river, watching birds flutter from branch to branch, jumping on the twin beds until his little head favored one pillow over another. The bathroom floor gave heat to his little soles, and the rainfall shower offered a new source of entertainment and bathing. The newness of everything reinvigorated our sleepy spirits.

The Dining Pavilion chefs seared and grilled in an open air space in a way that felt like an interactive experience. Hoisted in my arms for a front row seat, my son wiggled his sniffer like a bear cub. At our table, we unfolded a board game—our first as a family—and relished the relaxation that came over us unexpectedly.

S’moresologist is a new word in my vocabulary. Each evening after dinner, a board filled with Snickers and peanut butter cups and fresh fruit and marshmallows with graham crackers was placed in front of my son. His eyes were wide and they twinkled like the stars that pierced a perfectly blackened night sky. It was past our bedtime and we didn’t care. We ate too many marshmallows and we danced in the golden light of a bonfire until the cool air sent us hurrying back to our glowing tent. The heated blankets were on and we tucked ourselves into the fold like a love letter.

A Chuck Wagon dinner offered everything one dreams of doing for good Western fun—axe throwing, learning to rope, pitching horseshoes, listening to live music as a wood fire brings campfire food to a new level of sophistication. In its embellishment, the Resort at Paws Up ironically strips down the modern world. We are freed from the burden of technology or agenda and opened to the possibilities that nature provides.

Iver Sturm hasn't missed a beat despite the heart trouble his young life battled against

ALL HEART FROM THE START

“They called and they said ‘his heart is in, and it’s beating.’”

Christy Sturm reaches up to touch her necklace, which features the state of Texas with the shape of a heart inside. Her son, Iver, was not even 5 months old when he underwent heart transplant surgery in Dallas.

Iver, now two and a half, is up from his afternoon nap and starts to climb onto the kitchen table. Christy gestures across the tablecloth—more hearts—to point to the fence outside the house. “He can climb all the way up it,” she says. “Can’t get pants on him quick enough.”

Christy and her husband didn’t initially fill the house with baby gear the way many first-time parents do. “Just because we didn’t know if we were bringing him home,” Christy said.

When Christy was pregnant, they were told Iver would likely not survive due to diagnoses of heterotaxy syndrome and hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

“We just decided let’s keep going,” Christy said. “I’m the kind of person who would have always questioned.”

Iver had his first surgery a week after he was born. But his condition worsened to the point that his doctors determined a second planned surgery would not be successful.

At one point, Iver had severe heart failure. “I was there when he coded,” Christy said.

At that point, Iver was placed on the list of kids looking for donor hearts.

“You have to have a good match,” Christy says. “They look for the same features of the kiddo. They want the likelihood the heart will match and it works.”

Iver was on the list for about 50 days. His donor was a month and a half older than him, and had the same blood type. About a year after the transplant, Christy wrote to the donor’s parents via Southwest Transplant Alliance, but she hasn’t heard back.

“I never thought, before I had Iver, about donating your kid’s organs,” she said, recounting meeting someone at a charity gala whose son, an organ donor, died in a car accident. “That’s the other side.”

Less than a month after the transplant, Iver was discharged, but it still wasn’t time to come home. For three months following the transplant, the family stayed in Dallas at Ronald McDonald House. “That was one of Iver’s first homes,” Christy says. Iver would be 8 months old before he met his grandparents for the first time.

In the meantime, the Sturm family had to establish community in other ways. A group of families whose kids were awaiting transplants in Dallas around the same time became close, and Christy also sought out “heart mom” groups on Instagram.

“It’s nice to connect with other parents whose kids have had transplants, to hear, ‘I know what you’re going through, and these are the issues we have been having,’” Christy said. “We don’t have people around us who have kids with heart transplants.”

But that doesn’t mean the Missoula community hasn’t been part of Iver’s story in other ways.

Iver recently did a series of swimming lessons with Kaci Briggeman, one of three local instructors in the Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) method, which teaches toddlers a swim-float-swim technique to get to an edge.

“I thought when I met him at first he’d be small and show signs of all he’d been through, but he’s big and strong,” Kaci said. “He caught onto everything we’ve been doing really quickly.”

Initial ISR lessons last six weeks and are 10 minutes each weekday. Kaci said the oneon-one aspect of the lessons is a great fit for kids who are fighting health challenges or other obstacles. “We can really tailor each lesson to what that kid needs,” she noted. Plus, a private lesson can be safer for kids who are immunocompromised.

ISR is not the only local Missoula resource the Sturms have benefitted from. Although Iver’s surgery was in Dallas, prenatal care and much of Iver’s follow-up care is based in Missoula.

Christy said Dr. Joshua J. Sticka, a pediatric cardiologist, was phenomenal. “Iver had eight defects and he nailed every one of them in utero,” she said.

She also mentioned Dr. Lauren K. Willis, a pediatric gastroenterologist.

“We are lucky to have such good pediatric care in Missoula,” Christy said.

Montana nonprofit The Jaydn Fred Foundation also helped out the Sturms financially. “They’re an awesome organization here in Missoula,” Christy said. “They help individuals who are going through tough times.”

Christy has these words for families going through such tough times: “As hard as it is, try to realize that you have absolutely no control, and the best thing you can do is control how you respond to the situation,” she said. “And reach out to other families and know that there are other means out there for support.”
