I couldn't be more excited to say hello and welcome to the Mission Hills City Lifestyle family!
My name is Cooper Moore. When my wife Victoria and I had the opportunity to start this publication, we jumped at the chance. After living in the community for the last year, we couldn't help but dive head first into being more engaged in the community.
With her bachelor's degree from Liberty University in journalism, Victoria was a perfect pick to become the editor of our publication. After spending a few years in local news as a sports anchor in Roanoke, Virginia, she resigned and worked for a local church. Then I stole her from the Commonwealth and brought her home to Kansas, which she is very proud to now call home. She is incredibly gifted, and I am blessed to be married to her.
As for me, after graduating from Olathe East, I went to Kansas State University where I earned a Bachelor's in Secondary Education. I spent my early twenties and early thirties as a high school teacher in Grandview Missouri. In between, I got two Master's degrees in ministry and traveled to Asia, as well as South and Central America for humanitarian and missions trips. I spent nearly half a year in Peru traveling and speaking to government officials, churches and other groups throughout the nation.
Victoria and I have been spending the last three months working hard to prepare for the moment this publication hits your mailbox, and we couldn't be more pleased to say thank you for being a community worth investing in. Thank you for being a community worth telling stories about. Finally, thank you for being a community that made my Virginian wife and myself feel at home from the moment we moved into the community.

Nestled between State Line and Mission Road along 175th Street, a brand new Johnson County community is turning heads with its stunning interior designs. Sundance Ridge: A Rodrock Community will eventually contain 700 homes within three neighborhoods, and thanks to the talent of Laughlin Design House, no two homes will look exactly the same.
Leading the way in unique and modern style, Molly Laughlin captured the attention of design enthusiasts in Kansas City this spring with her latest model home design for Rodrock Homes. The Providence, a five bedroom, two story stunner off 175th Street and Kenneth Road, received the 2023 Pick of the Parade Gold Award.
“We took a new floor plan for Rodrock and designed it to fit the needs of a number
of different styles, family types and overall creative look,” she said. “ I am honored and grateful to Rodrock for letting me do what I love best and I'm honored that the Kansas City Home Builders Association awarded this home such a high honor.”
Alongside Laughlin, Karen Duckworth and Betsy Heitman make up the full-service interior design firm. They specialize in residential new builds and remodels, from the full construction process to the finer details of lighting, furniture, wallpaper, rugs and paint colors.
“One of the best parts about building with Rodrock Homes is the buyer gets to customize the selections to their personal style,” Laughlin said.

just last year, Laughlin’s goal in her 15 years of design is focusing on quality of work and keeping their clients as the main focus.
“It was important to open Laughlin Design House when I did so I could create a work/life balance and be available for my clients who are also trying to achieve the same goal,” she said.
The Rodrock Homes Design Center is one place where Laughlin takes a personalized approach with her clients, but a much different approach is necessary when designing the model homes for this community. Instead of pleasing one family, the target audience expands to all kinds of buyers.
“Anytime I do a model house I have to know that I need to show ideas that get clients to think outside the box but also allow them options to make it their own home,” Laughlin said. “I wanted the house to be modern but also incorporate different types of styles.”
One style does not fit all - a concept Laughlin understands well. Working with different materials, fabrics and patterns, she pulled off multiple styles in this award winning house.
“I would say this style is modern chic with a little rustic vibe,” she said. “It was important to mix the modern aspects with wood accents to create an overall feel of warmth and unique design.”
Of course, even the designer has a favorite aspect in every masterpiece. The Chevron master bathroom shower tile was an honorable mention, but there was one room that stole the show for Laughlin.
“I love how large the kitchen is and that island is amazing! I knew I needed large pendant lights to counteract the size of the cabinets and I love how it turned out,” she said. “The kitchen is the heart of the home and this house offers an amazing space to hang out and to have fun with family and friends.”
Laughlin Design House operates with one goal – turning both big and small houses into homes, by telling the story of each family living in them.
“I opened Laughlin Design House so I can do something different every day”, she said. “No two clients are alike and no two projects are alike and that is why I love what I do.”

You may know her as the founder and lead photographer at Epagafoto, or perhaps, you have had the privilege of hiring her to capture your special memories. But lately, Jessica Roark is tapping into a different side of her artistry.
Her newest business venture Jessica Roark Fine Art is a product of her lifelong love of painting and experimentation during the pandemic. Her extraordinary talent is proving, once again, to be a splash in the Kansas City area and beyond.
“It’s so interesting to see what someone receives from it,” Roark said. “A lot of my pieces are ending up in people’s vacation homes. I would’ve never thought about that.”
What started as a way to express her creativity quickly became the blueprint for her next artistic risk– underwater photography. And with the 20-year mark of Epagafoto fast approaching, Roark was ready to introduce her passion for fine art to the world.
“The first shoot I did with a model…game over,” she said. “It was so fun!”
As a former diver, the water gives Roark an energy like nothing else. The peace she feels underwater is an escape from the world above and the unpredictability of the water’s movements removes her control of the outcome, adding an edgy feel to each photograph.
“Artwork is medicine for people’s souls. I would hope that when people walk by my piece, it does something to them.”
“It’s fun for me, but it’s also fun for the participants because as adults, we just don’t frolic underwater for fun anymore,” she said. “Whatever you do underwater is a pure expression of your energy. It’s not pedicured.”
Roark was not sure how people would respond to her bold, bright statement pieces. Even driving to her very first launch party in Kansas City, her mind was spinning with all of the possibilities. While the move to invest in herself a second time felt more vulnerable, Roark is seeing the fruit of those risks in just the first few months of business.
“That’s the best part of all of this. From 2020 to 2023, I was shooting a lot of the work and holding the cards very close to my chest in fear that it wasn’t going to be well received,” she said. “To hear people talk about what they liked about the pieces or what the piece evoked in them was such a dream.”
Roark has always had a heart for people and their emotions. Years before Epagafoto was born, she graduated with a family counseling degree. But when she set her career sights on photography, Roark found the two skill sets were a natural fit.
“I get to celebrate people’s successes,” she said. “That’s why for the past 20 years, doing what I do has never gotten old.”
Creating something for people to enjoy is an extension of the care she has for them. Even in the name Epagafoto, which is the Greek word Agape (unconditional love) spelled backwards, Roark wants her love for people to be at the forefront of everything she does.
“So I thought I would build this business on the principle of unconditional love, and people now are like ‘Oh because of weddings?’ No, at the time, I didn’t know what I was going to photograph the most,” she said. “I think I wanted to photograph whatever I did from this place of unconditional love.”
The same principle stands today. Her ability to move hearts and provoke minds with her creativity is an honor she holds dear.
“Artwork is medicine for people’s souls,” she said. “I would hope that when people walk by my piece, it does something to them.”
Creating in some way, shape or form is an expression that will never die in Jessica Roark. It is woven into her very being and will only continue to evolve throughout her life.
“I may not choose to be a 70-year-old diving into a pool of water or an ocean with people, but I want to be able to cultivate skills that will allow my creativity to take me to the end,” she said. “It’s such a unique way to express what you see happening in the world creatively.”

Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings. For this alfresco dinner party, Chef Kyle draws on his favorite recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast.
• Build a menu around the season. Start with what produce is available locally based on the season for the most authentic meal experience. For instance, Chef Kyle says “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” but that meal served in the heat of Summer wouldn’t hit the same. In-season fruits and vegetables will always be of highest quality and best taste.
• Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says.
• Draw inspiration from the season’s colors and temperatures. For Spring and Summer, think flowers, fresh herbs and linens. For Fall, think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” For Winter, head indoors to create a cozy environment for guests to connect.
• “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with bur - nished brass for warm fall vibes.”
• An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.”
• Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.”
• To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!”
• As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.” Insider Tips for Hosting: “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.”

Yield: 6 servings
• 4 cups Brussels sprouts, raw, halved
• 1-2 tablespoons olive oil
• ¼ cup yellow onion, sliced
• 1 tablespoon garlic, sliced thin
• 1-2 cups bacon, smoked, thick cut, large dice
• Salt, pepper to taste
• 2 tablespoons real butter, unsalted
• Optional garnish: 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
METHOD OF PREPARATION:
1. Preheat oven to 400 °F for convection setting, (425 °F conventional).
2. In mixing bowl, add oil and cut raw Brussels sprouts. Season with salt and pepper.
3. Place seasoned sprouts on baking sheet and bake in oven until done, about 20-40 minutes (soft yet still with good texture and crispy edges with some dark brown color). Remove from oven.
4. Place large sauté pan on medium heat and render bacon. Add a splash of olive oil to get it going, if needed. Cook until bacon is crispy and golden brown, 5-10 minutes.
5. Add onions to pan and cook until soft, 5-8 minutes.
6. Turn heat to high and add garlic and butter and cook for 1 minute.
7. Add roasted Brussels sprouts to pan and toss all together. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
8. For optional garnishes, add fresh chopped parsley.
9. Serve and enjoy!
CHEF NOTES:
• If Brussels sprouts are large, cut in quarters.
• Rendering bacon means extracting the bacon fat which adds a lot of flavor to the dish.
Yield: 6-10 servings
• 2 cups heirloom carrot, cubed
• 2 cups heirloom rutabaga, peeled, cubed
• 2 cups heirloom parsnip, cubed
• 1 cup heirloom turnip, cubed
• 2 cups heirloom marble potatoes, halved
• 3 tablespoons rosemary, fresh, de-stemmed, chopped
• 1 tablespoon thyme, fresh, de-stemmed, chopped
• 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
• Salt – to taste
• Pepper – to taste
• Optional garnish: 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
METHOD OF PREPARATION:
1. Pre-heat oven to 400°F on convection setting (425°F conventional).
2. In mixing bowl, add oil and raw cut vegetables. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
3. Place seasoned vegetables on oiled baking sheet and bake in oven until they are caramelized and tender, about 30-60 minutes. Will be soft yet still with good texture and crispy edges with some lightly charred areas.
4. Remove from oven once finished cooking.
5. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley.
6. Enjoy.
Yields 4 cups
• 3 cups cranberries, fresh or frozen
• 1 cup cranberry juice, sweetened
• 1 piece orange peel
• 1 each orange for zesting
• ½ cup orange juice, freshly juiced
• 3 each cinnamon stick
• ¼ teaspoon clove, ground
• ¼ teaspoon allspice, ground
• ½ cup sugar
• Pinch salt
METHOD OF PREPARATION:
1. In medium saucepot on high heat, add everything except orange peel and orange zest. Bring ingredients to boil, then reduce to a simmer with lid.
2. While simmering, stir occasionally with rubber spatula ensuring bottom does not burn. Simmer for 30 minutes or until sauce thickens.
3. Remove lid and add orange peel and season to taste. Can add more sugar or spice if needed.
4. Once sauce is thickened and most liquid has evaporated, remove orange peel and cinnamon sticks and remove pot from heat.
5. With hand-held blender, puree sauce, keeping some texture.
6. Freshly grate in orange zest, stir and season to taste.
7. Transfer sauce to jar and place in refrigerator to cool overnight.
8. Enjoy!
CHEF NOTES:
• Enjoy with all types of poultry and game birds.
• Do not use ground cinnamon.
• Can puree with blender if you do not have hand-held blender.
• Consistency should be thick sauce and not a jelly.
9 WAYS TO ORGANIZE AND INJECT STYLE INTO YOUR SPACE
ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASSANDRA CASTANEDAEvery woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying these guidelines will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.
Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-toceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for out-of-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.
Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner!
Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions.
Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.
Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient. Consider adding a statement lighting fixture like a chandelier or pendant that provides ample bright lighting to your space, no matter how big or small.
WHY USE AN ARMCHAIR WHEN YOU HAVE ROOM FOR A SOFA? SLIDE UP A STOOL AND COLORFUL AREA RUG TO COMPLETE THE LOOK. IF YOU HAVE EXCESSIVE WALL SPACE, CONSIDER A MINI GALLERY WALL OR A STATEMENT WALL WITH WALLPAPER TO POLISH THINGS OFF.

Experience
As your publisher, I get the unique privilege of learning so much about these special communities and the people in them. Well, I thought I would return the favor. Here's an inside look into my life beyond the pages of Mission Hills City Lifestyle. My morning starts with a cup of coffee. It's not uncommon to find me sipping on a whole milk latte at Hattie's.
I am one of three kids and an uncle to seven beautiful nieces and nephews. Spending time with my family is a priority, especially while I am still the "cool uncle."
Aside from publishing, I am the lead pastor of The Porch Community Church in Louisburg, Kansas. It is an incredible honor to preach the truth of God's Word every week and to do life with the people of The Porch.
From September to April, there's a good chance I'll be refereeing high school football or college basketball almost every night of the week.
On the rare occasion I have any spare time, I've started to really get into pickleball. If you know the secret to finding an open court at Meadowbrook Park, I'm all ears!
