AUGUST 2024
Welcome to our special August issue, where we celebrate two of life's greatest joys: kids and pets! This month, we're thrilled to bring you our top Texas picks for rooftop pools in our Soak Up Sun article, expert advice on dog training from the one and only Blue Line K-9, and delightful features dedicated to the little ones who fill our lives with endless love and laughter. Pro-tip, check out our curated City List to find the best of local pediatricians for your little ones and veterinarians for your fur babies. Additionally, don't miss our roundup of the most delectable ice cream sundae creations Houston has to offer.
On a personal note, this August is particularly special to me as it marks my first year of motherhood with my son, Andy. Reflecting on this journey, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the moments of pure joy and the lessons learned. Watching him grow and discover new things that may seem ordinary gives a whole new whimsical and magical perspective on life. Throughout this first year, I have found a new identity as a mother. Embracing the challenges and joys of motherhood has reshaped my perspective, deepened my empathy, and brought a new sense of purpose to my life. Not to mention, seeing my husband become an amazing dad has made this journey even more special, as his love and dedication to Andy inspire me every day.
And what would this letter be without mentioning my two dogs, Chickenwing and Louie. Seeing Andy play with our doggies fills my heart with even more love. Their bond is heartwarming, and the joy they bring to each other is priceless. Our home is a lively place thanks to the laughter and play shared between Andy and his furry friends.
As we navigate through this issue, I hope you find as much joy and inspiration as I have found in my first year with Andy. Parenthood and pet ownership both come with their unique challenges and rewards, and they both fill our lives with moments of pure happiness.
Thank you for being a part of our community. We hope this issue brings a smile to your face and warmth to your heart.

Taking his unique blend of humor, integrity, and passion for service, Jorge Porras opened Blue Line K-9 Training in 2022. Specializing in behavior modification, rehabilitation, and obedience training, the dynamic business owner has a remarkable ability to transform dogs who may normally be overlooked.
With over two decades working and thriving in the culinary industry, Jorge learned the value of being part of a transformative process, "You have a direct impact, for good or for bad, on the outcome. You become part of the process and make the difference. From concept to plating to running a full kitchen, it's all part of the process that builds magic for the customers." Jorge pulls from his culinary experience to pour into his calling and passion for dog training.
Jorge’s love of service and work ethic set him apart from others in his field. His favorite part of the training experience is providing the ‘how’ for dog owners, and showing them what's possible for their dog. "It's all about developing the right skills. Everyone can learn the basics and grow from there," says Jorge.
With a variety of training packages available, Blue Line K-9 has something to suit the needs of every customer and every dog. Clients can learn side-by-side with their dog when they choose the Gold Package. The Ultimate Platinum level is perfect for those with busy schedules; where owners can drop off their dog for daytime training but have their dog at home every night. For full immersion training, owners can opt to send their pup for two weeks to Camp Blue Line.
Whether it’s time to travel (with or without mans’-best-friend), or just leaving their dog at home for the day, Jorge shares some top tips for dog owners. “Set your dog up for success by getting them trained and socialized, making it easier to manage stressful situations like airports or high-traffic areas,” Jorge advises. “Work on crate training your dog. There may be times where your dog will have to be in a crate and you don't want the first time to be on a trip and you find out they have an aversion to it.”
When it comes to leaving a furry friend home alone, “Don't amp up your dog before you leave. We often feel like we need to prepare the dog for us leaving by giving large amounts of affection,” Jorge says. “Instead, minimize the amount of affection and save it for when you get back.”
For extended time frames when owners can’t take their dog along, “There are many great companies out there that offer boarding, or private individuals who open their homes,” says Jorge. “Advocate for your dog; research, ask questions, and see if you can bring your dog for a tour. I trust services who are interested in building a relationship with the client.”
Jorge is passionate about teaching dog owners the power behind consistency, structure, and patience. He’s driven to empower dog owners by imparting the right knowledge and skills to unlock their dog's potential–transforming lives, one dog at a time.

It's summer now, and most people move when kids are on a break from school. While relocating can be daunting, with careful planning and a few strategic steps, the transition can be smooth and stress-free for everyone, including kids and pets.
Start by discussing the move with your children. Using maps and books to explain the new location makes it an exciting adventure. Pets should maintain their routine as much as possible and gradually introduce themselves to their travel crates or carriers.
Involve your kids in the packing process by letting them pack their favorite toys and essentials. Label boxes clearly to ensure their comfort items are easily accessible upon arrival. For pets, pack a separate bag with their food, medications, and comfort items to keep them calm during the move.
Plan frequent breaks during the journey to allow kids and pets to stretch and relax. Keep snacks, water, and entertainment handy to keep them occupied and content.
Upon arrival, set up the kids' rooms first, creating a familiar and comforting space. Designate a quiet area with pets' beds and toys to help them adjust.
Staying organized and attentive to their needs can make relocating with kids and pets a manageable and enjoyable experience. energy-realty.com

In August, Yésely was inducted into the Houston Design District’s Leaders in Design list.
If we’re going toward high-end finishes and there are no kids or pets, I love oak herringbone flooring, lacquered or diamond plaster walls, wallpaper, custom ceiling treatments and motorized draperies and shades. —Yésely Love
When the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, mother-of-two Yésely Love, sprang into action. An interior designer and construction project manager, she knew exactly how to get her children organized to keep learning.
She and other neighborhood moms worked together, setting up a school-day schedule that shared the supervision of video school and homework and found ways to keep books and school supplies always on hand.
For all of its upheaval, the pandemic also had silver linings, including many people finding a new appreciation for entertaining at home and others learning how easy it could be to work from home.
Yésely helped clients make home offices more beautiful and practical and, in turn, helped commercial clients make office workspaces feel more residential.
She’s still busy helping clients create great outdoor spaces such as patios, outdoor kitchens and bars and other play spaces. One client asked for an outdoor spa, and she created an above-ground endless pool with an outdoor shower. Another wanted an expansive backyard space to include seating areas, a kitchen/ bar and a huge in-ground pool with a spa.
A native of Venezuela who has a good deal of family in Spain, Yésely grew up coming to Houston often as her dad worked in the energy industry. She moved here 14 years ago, first working at National Oilwell Varco before shifting to a career in interior design and founding Canaima Design 9 years ago.
Now married to husband Justin Love, the founder and CEO of Blackbuck Resources, a midstream water solutions firm in the energy sector, the couple’s children are Justin Alexander Love, 11, and Caroline Marie Love, 10.
Yésely’s volunteer work includes serving on the PTO board at her children's school, West U Elementary, and recently joining the board of Camp For All.
Kitchens and master bedrooms are two of her favorite residential spaces to work on.
“Dekton (slabs) are family friendly and vinyl flooring is great for homes with pets and kids,” Yésely said. “Now, if we’re going toward high-end finishes and there are no kids or pets, I love oak herringbone flooring, lacquered or diamond plaster walls, wallpaper, custom ceiling treatments and motorized draperies and shades.”
In commercial jobs, she is inspired by each company’s work and, sometimes, the location of a project. For example, they recently had a project in the Mellie Esperson building, a historic, Art Deco-style building in downtown Houston. For this project, she used concrete and brick, two important materials in the Depression-era building’s construction and exterior.
While both residential and commercial projects need to be beautiful and functional, Yésely and her team pay attention to the health of those who live and work in them. Using organic and eco-friendly materials goes a long way.
An easy option for everyone is low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints, since traditional paints have chemicals that can off-gas for several months, she said.
Instead of vinyl tile, a product called Marmoleum is CO2 neutral and phthalate free and there are carpet options that use recycled materials and little to no chemicals. Cork is 100 percent recyclable and organic and can be used as wall covering for acoustics, she added.
Spending time outdoors and enjoying friends and family over good food and drinks is a great way to enjoy the season’s beautiful weather. From the fresh flower arrangements, produce, and herbs, this earthy spread is brimming with character and flavor. The earthy ceramic and clay vases give the perfect vessel to fill with organic cut herbs and handpicked wildflowers. We arranged a beautiful medley of Queen Anne’s lace, mint, sage, rosemary, lavender, lamb’s ear, nigella, buddleia, oregano, dill, feverfew, and geranium to name just a few of these beautiful blooms. We love a good home-cooked menu mixed with a signature drink, so we paired our meal with a delicious craft cocktail. Buttermilk brined fried chicken was a must for this outdoor party. A delicious peach bread pudding with salted vanilla caramel cream rounded out our meal for the perfect sweet treat. We wanted to share a few of our favorite recipes for you to try at home. Enjoy!
