An Exploration of What Life Truly Has to Offer

Hello Loveland and South City Lifestyle family!

My name is Sarah Erickson and I’m the Editorial Coordinator for Loveland and South City Lifestyle Magazine. Born and raised on the Eastern plains of Colorado, I attended the University of Northern Colorado (ahem, some years ago) for Journalism with dreams of nightly news and live beat coverage. However, as it often does, necessity overrode aspiration and I found myself in an array of marketing, content, and project management positions. I’ve loved my work and have met many wonderful people along the way, but I’ve always felt a deep desire to one day return to my journalistic roots.

When I happened to stumble upon the extraordinary Desiree Gustafson, Loveland and South City Lifestyle Publisher and this prestigious publication, I knew that now was my chance. I’ve set aside the time and bandwidth to finally, truly dig back into my journalistic roots by exploring the stories of the amazing people, businesses, organizations—the lifeblood of our remarkable community.

So, to me personally, our annual Explore Issue is deeply meaningful and signifies the exploration of the possibilities of what life truly has to offer. And we extended this theme into every page found in this month’s issue. We dig deep into the theme of exploration in every sense of the word. From exploring your options and achieving your dreams with local financial group, Layman Lewis; to traveling the world with Robin Norell of Milbrook World Travel; and trying new things with Climbing Collective and Loveland’s Annual Sour Beer Festival.

So much to explore and so little time, so buckle up and get ready for a fun and expansive exploration of ourselves and our community.

Travel Q&A with Robin Norell of Millbrook World Travel

OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO! BUCKLE UP FOR SOME MARVELOUS TRAVEL STORIES AND RECOMMENDATIONS FROM YOUR LOCAL GO-TO TRAVEL SOURCE

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND MILLBROOK WORLD TRAVEL?

My name is Robin Norell, and I am the Owner/President of Millbrook World Travel. I’ve been in the industry for over 10 years. I’ve been on 51 cruises, to 45 countries, and 33 states…. So far!

When I was growing up, my Dad had a company called Millbrook Custom Kitchens. It was a family business and we all worked there at some time in our lives. In the early 90s, we had 150 employees and produced award-winning cabinetry that was shipped around the world. My Dad passed away in 2018, but even after he passed, I know he helped put things in place for me to start my own travel agency, so I named my company after his. I even adopted his logo into mine - the “M” with the eagle head on the top was his logo.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A TRAVEL AGENT?

My father gave me a love of travel - we went on family vacations twice a year when I was younger. In college, my passion was languages. I took German, Spanish, and majored in Chinese (East Asian Studies) and spent a summer in China.  My husband and I traveled a bit before kids and then when I homeschooled them we incorporated travel into our studies. We didn’t just read about places in the world, we visited them. When they became adults and I was trying to decide what to do next, the thought that brought me the most joy was travel. I love to travel and I love to help people, so this is the perfect job for me. I’ve never been bored!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A TRAVEL AGENT?

As a travel agent, I love using my knowledge and experience to help my clients have a better vacation than they would have had on their own. I was recently in Europe for 5 weeks and did “on the spot” research for two of my clients while I was there. Deciding on the best itinerary or cruise can be daunting with so many options, so I am glad to be able to help my clients with their choices.

As a travel agency owner, I also enjoy helping people join the travel industry. I am always available for questions, help guide them through training and learning, and am happy to be building a wonderful team!

WHERE WAS THE LAST PLACE YOU TRAVELED?

I was in Europe from March 9 to April 11. The first week I attended two river cruise expos in Amsterdam, where we toured 15 different ships from 11 different river cruise lines, and we dined on them and I stayed on 3 different ships. Then I did a river cruise on the Rhine Dutch Waterway to Belgium, traveled to Berlin to visit friends, visited Dresden, Germany, went to Prague then Budapest, then did a river cruise on the Danube from Budapest to Vilshofen, Germany. It was truly a wonderful experience. You can read all about it at www.adventureswithrobin.com.

YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION AND WHY?

I would have to say Europe - I’ve been there 13 times and there are still so many places and a few countries I haven’t visited yet. I love history and the people of Europe, and each country offers different sites both natural and manmade, traditions, history, and people.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOST IMPACTFUL TRAVEL EXPERIENCE?

That would be my first river cruise. In October 2016, my husband and I did the Paris to Normandy itinerary on Avalon Waterways. We thought Normandy would be the highlight because my husband is very interested in World War 2 history. But the Normandy region of France was the home of Monet and Van Gogh, and visiting those places that we had seen in so many paintings was what was really special. And we discovered we wanted to take many more river cruises after that.

WHAT WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION AND WHY?

I don’t think I’ve gone to a place yet that I wouldn’t go back or recommend, especially because we’re all different. The places that I go might not interest someone, but they may be interested in places I hadn’t thought to visit. So, I don’t think there’s a bad place to go.

HOW HAS TRAVEL IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?

It has made me more aware of people from other cultures and understanding of the differences that can sometimes separate us unintentionally. It has given me a sense of wonder at the amazing and beautiful places around the world.

WHAT IS YOUR TOP TIP FOR INTEGRATING MORE TRAVEL INTO YOUR LIFE?

Be intentional about it. Make your plans far in advance and stick to them. Don’t wait for “someday,” because none of us are guaranteed tomorrow. Make a list (many call it a Bucket List) and plan the trips to check off the places you want to see the most. Studies have shown that “people get more retrospective enjoyment and satisfaction from their experiential purchases than from material purchases.” And when I finish a trip, I always have another one planned in the future to look forward to.

WHAT ARE THE TOP TRAVEL DESTINATIONS OR EXPERIENCES YOU WOULD RECOMMEND?

My top recommendation is a European river cruise (obviously). There are also many Expedition options that are becoming popular - small ships with zodiacs (and even onboard submarines) to explore Antarctica or Iceland, sailing ships in the South Pacific with diving experiences, going to South America for the Galapagos and Machu Picchu, and so many more. And multi-generational travel - how wonderful for generations to travel together! And it’s so easy to do and there are many options of places to go together. One of the places I send multi-generational groups most often is Alaska, but even European river cruises are shifting to be more accommodating to these larger family groups. Ocean cruise ships are also perfect for families to travel together. Everyone can “do their own thing” during the day (or do it together) and then gather for dinner together.

OF MILLBROOK WORLD TRAVEL

I love learning about different parts of the world, their history and culture, and meeting new people. Reading about history is fascinating, but nothing can beat seeing it in person. I am grateful for the freedom that allows us to travel almost anywhere on the planet, with so many different options for travel.

Augustine said, “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” I’ve read a lot of that book and still have so much more to see!

LAYMAN LEWIS FINANCIAL GROUP

ARTICLE BY SARAH ERICKSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLORADO PHOTOGRAPHY LIMITED, CHRISTA TIPPMAN

HELPING CLIENTS EXPLORE AND LIVE THE LIFE AND RETIREMENT OF THEIR DREAMS

While chatting with Alicia Lewis, President and Financial Professional at Layman Lewis Financial Group, two central themes invariably presented themselves as principles by which she is guided both personally and professionally: family and freedom.

A third-generation financial professional, Alicia, together with her father, Chuck Layman, co-founded Layman Lewis in 2007. A core family business from the get-go, the professionals at Layman Lewis take a holistic and relationship-based approach to financial strategies blending traditional and modern techniques to help clients pursue their goals, both now and in retirement.

And while they consider every aspect of their clients’ financial picture—investments, income, taxes, health care and legacy plans—their focus is on creating custom strategies to help their clients achieve their retirement goals. However, planning and investing for retirement, especially in the five to ten years as retirement draws nearer, can look quite different than any other time in life.

“When you’re still working, you have a lot of time to save and can take a lot more risk. You’ve got the paycheck coming in. But when you're in retirement, you've built your nest egg, and now you're saying, okay, how do I move from saving to spending my savings? It can be scary and it's a whole different set of concerns. It’s just a completely different type of planning.”

And it’s this type of planning that can make all the difference in the world, allowing for the exploration and freedom to achieve dream-level-status retirement. But you have to start somewhere and according to Lewis, it starts with knowing what you’re retiring to and then creating a plan around that. For the team at Layman Lewis, this involves a deep conversation exploring what their dream life looks like, bucket list items, and gaining

an overall sense of what their clients want to experience once they’ve retired. Being a huge proponent of experiencing life to the fullest, Lewis loves helping pull this information from her clients and integrate it into a strategy and a plan.

“Then we can actually show our clients that it’s possible. Without a plan, how can you possibly live your retirement dream? It’s kind of like, how could you possibly go on a road trip without having a map and saying, ‘Where am I going?'” Lewis explains.

Being in the industry for her entire life—growing up witnessing her father and grandfather both thrive in the industry and then eventually going into business with her father—she’s seen a thing or two in how people approach financial planning, especially around retirement.

“Sometimes I think people don’t have a retirement plan because they’re holding back and they’re nervous. But when they have a plan and they can see and we can show them their numbers, actually show them that they can do this, it gives them the confidence to be able to say, ‘I can do this.'”

She’s seen a different and more devastating side of the coin as well, where people wait to check off their bucket list items or do the things that they've always dreamt of.

“I want people to recognize that they're not promised tomorrow. Don't just wait until retirement to do all the fun things you’ve always wanted to do.”

And this is where the professionals at Layman Lewis come in. They are able to assist their clients at the highest level possible because they approach everything as a team. Their team works on every single case because, after all, multiple advisors are better than one. With each team member bringing something different to the table, they’re able to ensure that they’re offering the most comprehensive guidance possible.

Alicia and her team are also very family-focused. Only a tightknit family lineage of financial planners would be able to advise from such a team and family-based perspective.

“This is not a transaction business. This is a relational business. The more we can get to know you, the better we can advise you. So for us, it’s not just picking from a menu of options, we truly work in the best interest of our clients.”

The team at Layman Lewis is also deeply vested in our local community. You can find them volunteering in the community on many occasions, often bringing their clients with them. Since moving to Loveland when she was just two years old and then marrying her husband, Josh, who is a Loveland native, her love for the Loveland community is palpable. They now have two boys, 11 and 13.

“What I love about Loveland is the small-town feel. I love that we’re so close to mountains. But ultimately, this is a family community, and ours is a business that really invests a lot in our clients, and we become great friends with them.”

LOVELAND’S ANNUAL SOUR BEER FESTIVAL

If you love beer, especially of the sour variety, then you’re going to want to make a beeline to Loveland’s Annual Sour Beer Festival on Saturday, August 3 at the Desk Chair Workspace located on 4th Street in the heart of downtown Loveland.

After the inaugural event last year brimming with local music, food, festivities and exclusive small batches, a sour yet bright local legacy was born. And this year’s experience promises much more of the same with even more small batches, local breweries, and tasty brews.

Sour beers are a unique beer style that uses yeast and bacteria during the brewing process to achieve a deliciously tart taste and often includes fruits like cherry, raspberry, and peach to create a delicate balance of sour and sweet. And luckily, Northern Colorado boasts some of the most delectable sour beers around.

Complex and refreshing, this year’s Sour Beer Festival offers two ticket options:

• A VIP Ticket ($55/person) that includes access to the event at 1 pm, one hour before general admission, a

BUILDING COMMUNITY AND TEACHING NORTHERN COLORADO

HOW TO MASTER CLIMBING ONE HOLD AT A TIME

Climbing Challenge Event

Described as a home away from home where you can hang out with friends, exercise, and leave your problems at the door, Climbing Collective is building community and teaching Northern Colorado how to master climbing one hold at a time.

A climbing, fitness, and yoga studio, the first Climbing Collective gym was Longmont Climbing Collective that opened in 2018. Since then they purchased the Wooden Mountain Bouldering Gym in Loveland in December 2022 which is now Loveland Climbing Collective. Their newest gym in

Longmont opened in October 2023, and Greeley Climbing Collective is set to open in January 2025.

Their friendly staff and extraordinary facilities are winning over the hearts and dexterous hands of Northern Colorado climbers and those looking to learn how to climb. Combining community, fun, learning, and safety they are building a supportive community for both new and experienced climbers.

Nick Coutu, Marketing Manager for Climbing Collective is an avid climber himself who lived in a van for two years and traveled around the country climbing and encourages everyone to give it a try.

“Climbing incorporates community, physical exercise, and mental challenges as you

try to solve rope and boulder ‘problems’ that were created by the route setters. New climbs are set every week, so there is always something new to try!”

And this summer is the perfect opportunity. They offer adult climbing classes, fitness classes, yoga classes, kids climbing clubs, summer camps, and a kids climbing team. For those interested in learning climbing but aren’t sure where to start, Coutu recommends a climbing class. Their Loveland location has an Intro to Bouldering class and their Longmont location has Belay Basics & Learn to Climb for beginners and Bouldering Beta & Learn to Lead for intermediate climbers.
