Welcome fall! With the changing seasons comes a change in what we crave, and with fall, that often means comfort food. October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite food around town.
When I think of fall, I remember all those autumn days busy with my apple trees. It was really my first business, and with 28 trees in our yard, I had enough apples to support much more than our family’s needs. After all, how much apple sauce, apple pie, and apple crisp can one consume?
So, at an early age, with a little help from my dad’s sprayer and a lot of tree trimming by me, I began selling my apples to produce managers at the local Lunds, Red Owl, and SuperValu stores by the bushel. I remember selling them for a dollar more to Lunds because I figured they could afford it.
In this issue, I harken back to those days with a new apple story to share as we take a tour of LuceLine and Minnetonka Orchard. We also let you know what’s new in Lake Minnetonka and spotlight a business that watches over your home while you’re away, taking care of anything that needs taking care of. Our resident scribe, Jen, shares another take on a nearly antiquated idea and why we should bring back the 70’s dinner party. Finally, our main feature highlights a few fantastic local spots that do the food thing just right.
The smells of fall bring memories of visiting my grandma’s kitchen while on a road trip to leave school on fall break. My roommate from college and I arrived for the night at her home in southern Iowa only to find her putting the finishing touches on what must have taken her hours to complete. A full-course meal of meatloaf, potatoes, and gravy that was always perfect. Baked goods, homemade and warm. There were cookies, pies, cake, and scotcheroos. When I raised my hand and said, “No more,” she said we could take it with us for the road.
The aroma of certain spices and foods can bring us right back to our childhood, which can be incredibly powerful and comforting. Food brings us all together, and whether we share a meal with loved ones or enjoy a night out on the town, the time spent while enjoying food is invaluable. As always, thanks for reading, and we’ll see you around the Lake!

Journey westward through town, and your destination is none other than Macanda. The name is an homage to “Mākanda,” the Sanskrit term for “Mango.” In the culinary space, mangos are an indigenous species originating from Asia, but they have been extensively embraced by Latin American gastronomy, becoming a fundamental element of the region’s culinary identity.
Friends and families gather over larger tables as spectacular woven lamps hang above, forming a cutting-edge, vibrant setting. Just stopping by for a drink will be an experience in and of itself. Owner Aaron Switz describes the space as “vibey” and “fun.”
“We have some items from Mexico City that bring in broad flavors from different genres of food,” says Aaron.
The menu is graced with refined Mexican classics that complement creative takes on the timeless taco and tostada. “It’s not typical Mexican food. It offers more unique items you would find in Mexico City,” says Aaron.
Hidden in the entryway is Hifi Record Bar, a vinyl lounge and record bar. On weekends, you can find both music maestros and amateur listeners sipping a cocktail while they watch as the DJ spins vinyl.
“It makes it really exciting. I actually DJ there every once in a while,” says Aaron.

When celebrated restauranteurs and childhood friends, Eli Wollenzien and Deacon Eells had an inspiration to return to their small-town roots with a restaurant in Excelsior, they knew what it should be named: the “Coalition”. As Eli states, “Coalition is about the combined efforts of chefs, cooks, servers, farmers, vineyards and brewers and I see that partnership extending to our guests by providing the highest quality for and service in a warm and welcoming environment.”
With that objective in mind, Eli and Deacon transformed a nineteenth century historic Excelsior building at 227 Water Street into a sophisticated but warm community-like setting. The redesign of the space by Kara Karpenske of Kamarron Design, Inc. (KDI) of Edina is strongly suggestive of the roaring twenties zeitgeist with tall private booths, oversized chandeliers, and vintage lighting to enhance the look of the exposed original brick. Antiqued mirrored panels set off the white marble design bar top and warm toned leather bar stools to create a period fitting and elegant ambiance to the bar.
With the type of dining self-described as “casually sophisticated” patrons ranging from those shopping
the town, corporate types looking for a good client impression, as well as the weekend “first dates” will feel welcome and at home.
But Eli and Deacon didn’t stop there. The cocktail menu opportunistically comes from well renowned and carefully selected regional sources. Respected local breweries and vineyards round out the extensive selection of wines and beers that any aficionado would appreciate. Remember Eli’s statement about partnership?
On the cuisine side, Chef Eli, highly experienced in the increasingly global and sophisticated palate of today’s patrons, added a vibrant menu of classic American dishes like beef, lamb, pork, and walleye, often with an international flair. You’ll even find some innovative dishes such as Korean tacos, complete with filet mignon and kimchi, locally sourced of course. They even have the ever-popular Yappy Hour menu items for those who bring their four-legged friends to the patio.
Coalition is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, has patio seating when the weather cooperates and is quite well known for their brunch. Just drop in and check it out. You won’t be disappointed! coalitionrestaurant.com
Indulge in a contemporary twist on Italian cuisine at Wayzata’s Josefina. While embracing the classics like pepperoni pizza and spaghetti carbonara, Josefina also boasts a selection of delectable seafood dishes, including the standout Fusilli Negra - a lobster, tomato, and mint pasta creation.
“It’s got the classics, but it also has more upscale items,” says owner Aaron Switz. “It pulls inspiration from all parts of Italy.”
Just off the bay of Lake Minnetonka, Josefina sits snuggled on Lake Street and offers a warm, approachable atmosphere for locals and visitors alike.
“It’s not fancy; it’s definitely approachable, but it does have some items on the menu that like to be on the fancier side,” says Aaron.
From the very essence of the restaurant to each carefully crafted dish, Josefina manages to strike a harmonious chord between familiarity and innovation, making it a delightful dining destination. With leadership from 2022 Minnesota’s Chef of the Year, Daniel Del Prado, Josefina continues to be recognized for its intimate ambiance and offerings.
Imagine a sophisticated twist on the classic Italian meatball, for instance. This culinary gem has garnered immense popularity ever since its introduction on Josefina’s menu.
“We didn’t have meatballs on the menu at Josefina. We were like, ‘Should we do that?’ Today, they’re the #4 seller in the whole restaurant,” says Aaron. “People really gravitate to these classics.”
Embracing the essence of Italian culture, Josefina supplies an array of irresistible gelato flavors, a treat for those strolling by or indulging in a dine-in experience. Explore captivating options like Olive Oil and Sea Salt Caramel, just to name a few. Don’t miss this inviting experience in the heart of Wayzata. josefinawayzata.com

After leaving Wall Street, owner and CEO Lindsay Pohlad started Grocer’s Table amidst the pandemic. What many would see as a setback, Lindsay saw as an opportunity.
After attending culinary school, Lindsay ventured into the restaurant industry, wanting to create a space where the Twin Cities community could find farm-to-table dishes and a warm place to make memories with friends and family.
In 2020, Grocer’s Table opened, providing counter service in the mornings and full service in the afternoons. Confined by shutdowns and regulations, the restaurant began offering takeout and gift boxes, giving folks a flavor of what was to come at Grocer’s Table.
Today, Grocer’s Table offers everything from your morning coffee to your nightcap. For those just stopping by, Grocer’s Table offers a grab-and-go space as well.
“I’d like our guests to be inspired by all things culinary from the prepared foods to the a la carte menu, retail products, and bakery alike and to be able to enjoy our offerings at all ages and with any company,” Lindsay says.
Throughout the farmhouse-styled restaurant are displays of vendors featuring small batches of goods from small businesses.
“A lot of them are local, women-owned small businesses,” adds Lindsay.
Lindsay ventured into Grocer’s Table with the goal of offering fresh foods in an atmosphere that “feels like Old Wayzata.” The culinary team, led by Executive Chef Craig Johnson, creates all dishes from scratch and serves up new cuisine every six weeks to offer in-season ingredients.
“We try to be as seasonal as possible and tap into micro seasons,” says Lindsay. From the mouthwatering dishes to the rustic aesthetic, Grocer’s Table has quickly become a favorite among Minnesotans living both near and far. As for what’s next, Lindsay says she’s “not fully done.” Her current focus is working on an extension of the brand. thegrocerstablemn.com
Norwegian for water, the term “Vann” is a nod to the superb location of Vann Restaurant, located just a stone’s throw away from Lake Minnetonka. Locally raised, Chef and Owner Erik Skaar bought a former barbeque joint just a few years ago but had been crafting this dream of a space for years prior to opening the doors.
“My aunt and my uncle, on my 16th birthday, brought me out to New York and took me out to the Four Seasons and a couple of other places,” says Erik. “I caught the bug after going to Michelin Star restaurants and hotels.”
Sourcing fresh seafood through Erik’s impeccable imports, every element - from the cuisine to the ambiance - is meticulously curated to embody the essence of the brand. It’s no surprise that Vann Restaurant snagged the titles of Minnesota’s Best Fine Dining Restaurant and Best Seafood Restaurant in the prestigious 2022 Star Tribune Readers’ Choice Awards.
“I wanted it to reflect a cozy living room,” says Erik. “Given our proximity to the Lake, I wanted it to be nautical-themed.”
The menu showcases an eye-opening collection of globally-inspired dishes, drawing inspiration from Erik’s journeys across iconic culinary destinations like Paris
and Seattle. In addition, Vann Restaurant offers a specially curated selection of wines that is sure to captivate even the most discerning of wine enthusiasts.
Meeting Beverage Director Calvin Motes through his wife, Erik says Calvin is the “wine nerd” that Vann Restaurant needed.
“I was very adamant about what kind of wines, where it comes from, and what we serve,” says Erik. “There was a long period of time where I was writing a wine list while I was cooking.”
Calvin exemplifies an unwavering passion for the exceptional wines that sit on the tables at Vann Restaurant. With unparalleled dedication, he meticulously curates selections that align with Erik’s distinctive palate, elevating the wine game in the west metro.
“He’s extremely knowledgeable and a student of his craft,” says Erik.
Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary or seeking a solo night out, the Scandinavian-inspired restaurant offers a white-tablecloth experience tailored to any occasion. Allow yourself to be immersed in a place where fine wines harmonize with mindfully crafted culinary delights, creating a synchronization of flavors that’s nothing short of extraordinary. vannrestaurant.com
Buddy Boy Fine Barbeque began 20 years ago with a small roadside smoker and later evolved into a food truck that owners Joe and Jennifer Cox traveled across the country with. It wasn’t until 2010 that Buddy Boy became what it is today: a place to gather with friends and family and enjoy a real taste of Minnesota.
Located in Minnetrista, Buddy Boy offers more than your typical barbeque joint. The restaurant features a full wood-fired menu, including slow-smoked barbeque (brisket, beef ribs, pork, and chicken), wood-fired steaks, burgers and pork chops, and wood-oven walleye. The menu also boasts a variety of pasta and rice dishes, as well as salads and many gluten-free and vegetarian options.
But the best part about Buddy Boy’s wood-fired menu is where it all comes from. “Buddy Boy serves the best of what Minnesota ranchers and farmers have to offer. We receive Minnesota-grown goods daily. We have great relationships with Minnesota Grown, Minnesota Farmers Union, and local vendors,” Joe says.
Buddy Boy has become a destination spot for its barbeque and prime beef brisket. Don’t believe me? The restaurant typically goes through 150 heads of cattle every three days for brisket. If that’s not the sign of a popular restaurant, then I don’t know what is.
In addition to delicious barbeque, Buddy Boy offers live music during the summer on Fridays and Saturdays and is planning music festivals on the 20 acres the restaurant sits on for the future. This winter, you’ll also be able to enjoy an outdoor winter ice bar.
Aside from the delicious food and lively events, Buddy Boy “is a place to gather with family and friends celebrating and meeting and getting to know strangers at the tables next to you,” Joe says. “Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us over the last 20 years. We hope to be a blessing to the community for many more.” buddyboybarbeque.com
“When you come to Med Box Grill, we want you to feel like you went to the Mediterranean and back but without the jetlag,” says Semih Ayhan, co-owner of Med Box Grill.
What began as a food truck in 2017, Semih and his business partner and co-owner, Tuncay Ozdenak, collected family recipes handed down from Tuncay’s grandmother and Semih’s aunt and mother to open an award-winning restaurant in Chanhassen, serving up delicious and authentic Turkish and Greek recipes.
“We both grew up with the family tradition of making big meals, and as a kid, you would always help and learn along the way,” shares Semih. “Tuncay’s family and my family are from different parts of Turkey that are famous for different dishes, so we combined our recipes to create the menu. My family has also run a bakery in Turkey since 1946, and so we’ve integrated more baking items on the menu like our freshly baked baklava.”
Everything at Med Box Grill is prepared from scratch. “We care deeply about the quality and the freshness of our food. That sets us apart. We make all our appetizers and sauces ourselves. We don’t believe in buying something in a huge tub and serving it to our customers,” says Semih.
The number one customer favorite is, hands down, the Gyro Wrap. “It’s been the favorite even when we had the food truck. We created every single dish on the menu, and they’re all like our babies, but a favorite is the kebabs. We use the best meat on the market and marinate for 24 hours. We serve and cook to order, so everything’s fresh. The dish also comes with buttery, fluffy Turkish rice and Mediterranean salad. The portions are huge,” laughs Semih.
From the music and decorations to authentic dishes and exceptional service, you’ll enjoy a level of hospitality only experienced in the Mediterranean. “Customer service is number one in our culture. We go table to table and talk to our customers. We not only wanted to bring our culture and dishes to the Midwest, offering quality and authentic good-tasting food, but we wanted our customers to feel as if they’re part of the family.”
“If you have a dream, there is a way to do it,” reflects Semih. “You don’t always see the path, but once you start walking, the path appears along the way.” And Semih and Tuncay have created a delicious path. medboxgrill.com

For restaurant connoisseurs looking for an upscale American Bistro, Layline is the place to explore.
“‘Layline’ is a sailing term. It’s an imaginary line to get from point A to point B quicker,” explains owner Aaron Switz.
Being the water-town of the west metro, Excelsior is the perfect host to such a restaurant. Visitors and sailors alike can indulge in fine dishes just steps away from Lake Minnetonka.
“We leaned into seafood, so there’s oysters and mussels and shrimp cocktail,” says Aaron. Reimagining what was the historic Gary’s First Class Car Care, Layline transformed the dilapidated gas station into a modern and vibrant space. The restaurant presents a contemporary and eclectic feel for customers, offering a bustling outdoor patio during the warmer months.
Layline boasts a variety of shareable apps, salads, pastas, fish, meats, and more. Those enjoying a beverage may even find a flower or two in their cocktail. These dishes are not only photo-worthy but will leave your mouth watering for more.
“You’ll not only find high quality food and great hospitality but a very approachable and everyday kind of menu,” describes Aaron. “You can eat here several times a week and enjoy a burger or something more elevated.”
Whether you are stopping in with friends, neighbors, or coworkers, Layline is the perfect place to enjoy. From your first bite to your last, Layline’s culinary masterpieces promise to leave your palate craving an encore. laylinerestaurant.com
Opened since July, the popular national chain Dave’s Hot Chicken has landed in Minnetonka. This location is a family-run franchisee group by the Humphries family—Alex Humphries, former NBA star Kris Humphries, and Kris’ parents, Debra and William. “We chose the location in Minnetonka for Dave’s Hot Chicken because it felt like the perfect fit for the concept and the first location in Minnesota,” says Alex. “The vibrant local community of Minnetonka, the bustling trade area of Ridgedale, and close proximity to I-494, I-394, and 169 made this location a synaptic connection point for Minnesotans near and far to have easy access to Dave’s Hot Chicken.”
Since opening, the response has been overwhelming. Lines have wrapped around the building, and customers can’t seem to get enough. “The response to our restaurant since we opened the doors has been nothing short of amazing,” says Alex. “Minnesotans have really embraced the bold and distinctive flavors that Dave’s Hot Chicken offers.” Fans of the brand have posted their favorites on social media, and the restaurant has seemed to gain a cult-like following. “Our unique combination of spice levels and the tender juiciness of our chicken has created a
lot of buzz, and we’re so grateful for the word-of-mouth recommendations our guests have been giving.”
What makes Dave’s chicken stand out from the rest? “When it comes to the menu, there are a few standout favorites that our guests absolutely love,” says Alex. “Our menu showcases the unique spice blends we’re known for, coupled with the tenderness of our chicken. Our combo meals (Dave’s #1, #2, #3, or #4) are the most popular, which are a combination of our sliders, tenders, and crinkle-cut fries.” The seven spice levels range from “no spice” to the “reaper.” (Proceed with caution! The reaper requires guests to sign a waiver in order to try it.) To cool down from the extreme heat, guests can order a variety of classic shake flavors.
Dave’s Hot Chicken has plans to expand. “We plan to open 15 more locations in the greater Minneapolis-St. Paul area over the next few years, and 2024 should be an exciting year for us as we target to open multiple locations,” says Alex.
Check out daveshotchicken.com for menu information, and swing by the location right across from Ridgedale Center on Plymouth Road.

How two local orchards are helping families cultivate treasured traditions
Visiting apple orchards in the fall is a time-honored Minnesota tradition. It ranks next to lakeside cabins and the State Fair as hallmarks of our year. As the leaves begin to turn and the days grow shorter, if you find yourself craving an apple cider doughnut or feel the need to pluck Honeycrisps from branches, here are two highlighted orchards where you can do just that.
LuceLine Orchard sits just alongside the LuceLine trail, southwest of Watertown. Owned and started by Rich Pawelk and Terri Traen Pawelk in 2004, LuceLine Orchard, as it exists today, was never a set plan. Terri says, “We didn’t buy this place with the intent for it to be an orchard. It just kind of morphed, fell into place, or was meant to be.” In 2007, the couple planted the first 300 apple trees, and in 2009, they planted an acre of grapes. Now, LuceLine Orchard boasts more than 10,000 apple trees and six acres of vineyards.
There’s a lot to do at LuceLine. Beyond the gardens and trails spanning the 200-acre orchard, LuceLine has a beer garden, pub and grill, petting zoo, 30-acre corn maze, and all kinds of local products from honey to syrup tapped just off the LuceLine trail. A key part of LuceLine Orchard’s calendar is its focus on live music. And if you’ve
met Terri or maybe simply recognized her voice, that is unsurprising.
Before coming to LuceLine, Terri worked at KQRS in Minneapolis for more than thirty years. Her morning show was the number one show in the country, several of them. Now, she leverages that PR experience to bring live music to the orchard. About making the jump from a radio skillset to an orchard, Terri shares, “This was completely different, but then it’s not. It’s very similar in some ways.” Bands coming to LuceLine in November include Emerson Avenue, The JustUs Band, Olivia Roosa, and The Stand Ups.
The farmhouse and barn that Rich and Terri turned into LuceLine Orchard was built in 1907. Being more than a century in age required some serious renovations to both structures.
What has been surprising about opening the orchard, however, has been crossing paths with people who used to live there long before Rich and Terri bought the place. While there have been several, a notable example was a woman who celebrated her ninety-fifth birthday at LuceLine Orchard. She had lived at the farm in the 1930s and 1940s when she had been a schoolteacher in Hutchinson. “When she first saw the barn, she teared up because she thought it would have been torn down,” says Terri. lucelineorchard.com
LuceLine OrchardMinnetonka Orchard is another wellloved fall destination for apple picking. Located west of Orono on County Road 26, Minnetonka Orchard has more than ten varieties of apples available to pick across its forty acres.
Minnetonka Orchard sets itself apart by staying open through the Christmas season. The orchard opens for the Christmas season Thanksgiving weekend for a full calendar of Santa and Grinch visits, Live Christmas tree sales, and a gift barn.
A specific focus of Minnetonka Orchard is tradition. “People come here with their kids and now with their grandkids,” says Crystal Madsen, the manager of Minnetonka Orchard.
Many have been coming for years and don’t want the traditions that they once did to change. Favorites include Minnetonka Orchard’s apple cider doughnuts as well as the now-famous ‘How Tall This Fall?’ sign. “Simple things like a ‘How Tall This Fall’ sign, a Minnetonka Orchard sign with a ruler, hold a special place for visitors. People have been coming out to measure their kids with it for years. It’s just a staple here,” says Crystal.
So, whether you are returning to a long-loved orchard or venturing out to a new one, apple picking or kicking back for a picnic within the groves is a time-honored way to celebrate the season. minnetonkaorchardmn.com

Nothing ruins a vacation more than getting a call from your neighbor while mid-sip Mai Tai, and they say, “Soo, hope you’re having a good time, but… a tree just fell on your roof.” Your biggest worry when on vacation or snowbirding for the season should be picking the perfect spot to lay your beach towel.
“I can’t tell you how many stories I have when somebody leaves for the winter and returns home only to discover water damage from a leaking water heater, or their pipes have frozen, or the power has gone out, or there’s storm damage and now, instead of coming home rejuvenated they have to deal with tons of damage and stress,” says Mike Gottsacker, owner of True North Home Watch.
True North Home Watch is a professional home watch company that inspects your home or second home inside and out for any issues while you’re away. “We offer a peace of mind,” says Mike. “Having a neighbor or family member is one thing, but what happens when everything hits the fan? When you need someone to manage a crisis or unexpected situation. A neighbor or family isn’t always willing to take that on or is truly unable. How do you manage everything when you’re in Florida for several months?”
Mike Gottsacker Owner of True North Home WatchThis is when Mike becomes your favorite person. “I’m your eyes and ears while you enjoy vacation. Typically, we visit the property once a week, though that can vary depending on what the homeowner requests,” explains Mike. “During each visit, we go through a 40+ point inspection, customized to the homeowner’s specific requirements, and when the inspection is complete, the homeowner receives a link to the report in an email where they can read and see what I found during the inspection, including geo-located timestamps and photos of your property.”
If anything arises, from something small like an unexpected package delivery or something big like water damage, Mike is there to handle it, communicate with you, and coordinate with the right people to fix the situation, always running any decision by you.
“We also offer concierge services,” says Mike. “For example, if you’re having a bunch of furniture delivered while you’re away, I can let them in and make sure everything goes in the right place. Or, if you’re going to arrive home late and exhausted from your trip, we can get groceries for you and have everything stocked and ready for when you come home.”
Mike is the only one in the state certified with the National Home Watch Association (NHWA). “There’s so many points of failure in a home, and many don’t even know what to look for,” says Mike. “Not only am I certified through the NHWA, but I grew up around real estate. My father was a real estate developer, and I started building houses with his crew when I was 15. After college, I got into real estate myself for 20 years, but I’ve always had a love for the construction side and have a discerning eye and the experience to spot potential problems before they become real problems.”
Before you hand over your keys, Mike always meets the homeowner face to face to discuss everything and develop that trust and assurance. “Trust is a huge factor. I want the homeowner to be completely confident and comfortable with me,” affirms Mike. “To me, the home is extraordinarily important. Your home is your biggest investment, and I want you to feel perfectly at ease hopping on that plane and knowing that your home will be safe and that someone trusted and reliable will take care of it.”
What Mike offers at True North Home Watch is hard to come by. Having that peace of mind is everything. But now you can relax and truly enjoy that Mai Tai, knowing that even if something goes wrong, Mike will be there to handle it. Learn more: truenorthhomewatch.com

If you are lucky to live long enough, your music and your hairstyle and your kitchen comes back into fashion again. (Fingers crossed on the kitchen over here.) Not everything returns but
a lot of it does. My children are traipsing about their summer wearing white Reeboks that they find very original but they are the same shoes my ballet teacher wore in 1985 and I think they belong on ballet teacher feet. Apparently cottage cheese is ‘back’ now although I’m not sure where it went in the first place.
Cargo pants are also back in style and who doesn’t love tons of pockets? Some things really were such a horrific idea the first time, they should never be brought back in my opinion. For example, if ultra low-rise jeans and the word ‘unprecedented’ go away forever, we probably will be better for it. I really want to bring back the dinner party. Not a 2019 dinner party, although those were beautiful. I definitely spent several hours fanning out paper thin radish slices and artfully arranging olives, herbed Marcona almonds and red globe grapes on various charcuterie boards. But in 2019, having friends over often felt like a huge undertaking. I felt some pressure to make it all perfect. Not sure if it was my mental state or my inability to look away from Pinterest, but it became a whole thing just to have another family over for a burger. Cleaning the house. Planning the menu. Multiple grocery store trips to find just the right something. Leaf blowing the yard and mowing the lawn and deadheading the potted plants. Moving the lacrosse nets out of the walkway. Shuffling the teenagers’ cars like puzzle pieces so people can get in and out of the driveway. It took way too much effort.
And then there was a very long spell with no parties at all. And now that I’ve had plenty of time to reflect… guess what?
Nobody cared. Not the people who loved us. Nobody expected our house to be in Architectural Digest because AD does not feature homes with a dog toy in every room. Nobody gave a judgmental thought to my sad, thirsty garden or the seven bags of open chips in the kitchen except for me, and the party should never be about me in the first place.
Not one person needs a dinner or a life that is influencer worthy in order for it to be joy filled. I want to bring back the 70’s dinner party. I’m ready for the 70’s spirit again. The relaxed dinners with mysterious things suspended in Jello and multiple meatball choices and breezy dresses and low expectations for house tidiness and high expectations for fun.
Maybe the 70’s were laid back because they didn’t know they had to survive the 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s only to be smacked with a pandemic. But it was simpler. Slower. Less comparison to unrealistic ideals. I did some research and maybe we don’t have to bring back all the food. There is a
delightfully entertaining Instagram site called ‘70’s dinner party’ that both inspires and terrifies me. We can skip the mayonnaise centered appetizers and bologna-themed items. They did show a recipe for something called a Pickle Burro which is a large dill pickle fashioned to look like a donkey. Nobody knows why. I’m going to make one though, he looks so cute.* However, the vibe of the 70’s dinner party is what I’m after. Good music. Fun people. Small crockpots and crackers flung into a bowl and cheese dips. 45 minutes of prep for 5 hours of being together. We can play games. We can sit around and talk and laugh and have lemon sherbet for dessert. And it will be nothing, I mean nothing, that social media would be interested in promoting. We aren’t curating a glossy marketing plan, we would just be curating memories. Consider joining me and invite your people over. Get ready to give and get some casual invitations also known as PHONE CALLS and get ready to bring a pineapple cheese ball. And you know what would complement a pineapple cheese ball? A Harvey Wallbanger.
*Note: Several pickles were harmed in the making of this project. Several.

If you’re not fully ready for cold weather yet, first off, you’re not alone, and secondly, this is the perfect recipe for you. This garlic herb butter recipe is a great way to hold onto the freshness of summer while transitioning into those more savory and cozy fall dishes. Plus, herbs are one of the few plants that can more easily be kept alive indoors during the winter! This butter is versatile and goes with just about anything. You can use this on top of bread, popcorn, veggies, as a sandwich spread, and more.
• 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
• 4 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
• 1 tablespoon herb of your choice (dill, basil or oregano are my go-to herbs.)
• 1 clove garlic, chopped
• 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• cracked pepper to taste
1. Add all ingredients in a food processor (or mix by hand in a bowl).
2. Transfer butter mixture on parchment paper or plastic wrap.
3. Cover butter tightly and roll into a log.
4. Place in refrigerator until firm. Enjoy!
