What’s the most frustrating part about building a home?
For some homeowners, it’s not the investment, the time, or the selections — it’s being left in the dark about all those decisions.
“I’ve met with so many homeowners who are discouraged about the idea of building a home, when it should be an exciting time,” says Stacy Eakman, partner of Alair Kirkland. “We’re on a mission to change the way people feel about residential construction companies.”

Kids & Pets
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits.
This issue is always one of my favorites. I suppose because of the immense joy that children bring to their families and the significant impact they make on their communities.
Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment and we are happy to highlight the best for Kirkland's kids in this issue.
Secondarily, who could forget pets? The special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And we can’t ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends. The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.
My own two rescue kitties have shown remarkable tolerance with the amount of snuggling and love bestowed on them by toddler twins.
What children and pets share in common is that they need us. Our care, attention and intention shapes how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.
Cheers!

Musician and owner of Rockory Music School shares his story

N LIGHT EXCEPT AS NOTED
Daniel Miller had an auspicious start in music: His father put him in violin lessons at four-and-a-half years old and it’s been a constant in his life ever since. He started learning to play ukulele at ten, then got into guitar. Miller quit violin at 15 and started with a garage band - continuing to play music throughout college, and eventually earning a degree in Contemporary Writing and Production from Berklee College of Music. Now he plays in five (!) bands - serving as bandleader for one, and owns and teaches at Rockory Music School.
Following graduation from Berklee, Miller returned to the Seattle area and a challenging job market. He worked at a different music school for five years, then started Rockory in 2016. His friend Kenn Wildes owns Stage 7 Pianos, and Miller started with a room there as the
sole Rockory teacher. Eventually, he moved to a neighboring space and has added instructors over time as demand increased. Miller connected with the way music fundamentals were presented at Berklee, and that informs how he teaches and runs his school. “My definition of success is to have all my income derived from music activities. I love performing equally with teaching,” he says. Often playing with his bands on regional tours, he recently performed at Folklife Festival.
Miller loves to play outside - outdoor performances are a major feature of Rockory summer camps. “I like the sound quality better outdoors, it’s just an enjoyable experience,” he says. Rockory offers two band experiences for kids; a school-year program which entails a group of kids rehearsing weekly, culminating in
an indoor event with the traditional trappings of a rock concert like printed posters and a cover charge. The other is the summer camps which allow a performance akin to busking in a more informal setting. “I’d like to enter into some partnerships with venues for our summer camp students to perform, the busking performances are fun for everyone (students and the public),” Miller says. Student recitals are twice per year, and a recent partnership with Lake Washington Christian Church as a venue has been working out well.
This year, Miller celebrates seven years of Rockory Music School and in the future, he hopes to add a woodwind department with flute and saxophone teachers. “When I look at that time, I’m grateful I made it this far. I do all the business aspects of Rockory and it’s working,” he says.

Great Reads for Great Kids
ARTICLE BY CHRIS JARMICK
My favorite books for ages 0 to 4 years would definitely include Mix it Up by Herve Tullet. I saw a young mom reading it to her toddler in the store and he was fascinated. This very simple book begins with a blank page and the words: Are you ready? And on the next page is one grey spot and the words: Rub that gray spot just a little to see what happens. It is simple, clever and worth sharing with your child (grandchild) over and over again.
Another book I believe will be a classic is called Stick and Stone by Beth Ferry and Tom Lichenheld. A story about the friendship between a stick and a stone. There is an adventure and wonderful message about friendship and about bullying. The words are clever and include some fun puns and the illustrations are wonderful.
One of my favorite illustrators and children’s authors is Greg Paprocki. Simple alphabet books with absolutely wonderful illustrations. Titles include B for Bison; Z for Zoo, P for Pirates, and O for Oceans.
Local author Laura Knetzger has a wonderful book series for children of all ages called Bug Boys . It’s about two friends (beetles) who explore and go on adventures together. Inventive and fun!
Another excellent local author whose books are extensively researched, beautifully written and illustrated by various people is Curtis Manley. The most popular of his books are Shawn Loves Sharks , Just Right (Searching for the Goldilocks Planet) and Crane Girl.
Some of the books I recommend for older, readingon-their-own kids include the wonderful graphic novels that teach history with a sense of humor - the Nathan Hale Hazardous Tales series. Don’t forget the Spy Camp and Space Case books by Stuart Gibbs or the award-winning Winterhouse series by Ben Guterson for those 10-13 year olds.

Maximizing your Return on Life
Carleton McHenry of McHenry Capital on how to get the most from your money
WHAT IS “RETURN ON LIFE”?
Simply put, Return on Life or “ROL”, is using your financial resources to improve your life. Not just grow your bank account, but improve every aspect of life from work to home, health to relationships and more. Money is only a tool and the more you use it to improve each area of your life, the greater your ROL.
This concept came from a consortium of financial planners who realized that one of the most impactful tools people can use to increase their level of happiness is money. Many people are so focused on financial return (ROI) that they lose sight of how they could use their money to make a difference in their lives (ROL).
HOW DO YOU IMPLEMENT ROL IN YOUR AND YOUR FAMILY’S LIVES?
One of the biggest things we did was move from a big city to a small community. My wife and I got married in 2018 in her hometown of Woodinville. While driving
back to Austin, Texas where we were living at the time, we stopped in this little charming town called Leavenworth. We loved the idea of being in a smaller community where we could get to know our neighbors, where people do many outdoor activities, and you can walk to town. And voilà - we decided to move and have been living here since 2019.
Another thing we’ve done to improve our ROL is our second residence. My wife’s father passed away and her mother had a stroke after we got married, and instead of selling their Port Angeles home, we fixed it up to rent out. This has been such a fantastic investment for us not only financially but also as a vacation getaway for ourselves.
We now have two young boys, and spending quality time with them and raising them in our community of choice where they can learn and achieve great things is inspiring to us. We hope to instill in them the same work ethic and values we have, and help them improve all areas of their own lives.

WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND OF MCHENRY CAPITAL?
I started McHenry Capital in 2005 having worked for both Wall Street (Merrill Lynch) and Main Street (GWFC - a boutique investment firm). I wanted to start my own shop that could bring the best of these two worlds together: Wall Street capabilities but with Main Street transparencies. Being a Fee-Only firm was a priority - we get paid by our clients and nobody else so there aren’t conflicts of interest. My team and I act as fiduciaries - we always put our clients’ interests ahead of our own. Our focus is working with families and helping them wrestle with their two biggest financial headwinds: Retirement and college planning.
The cost of higher education continues to increase, so we work with families to not just save for college but save on college. This includes helping students determine both merit and needbased financial aid available for the school of their choice. We also help families compare previously overlooked schools that may offer better financial incentives for their child. In addition, we evaluate how families can best save for college and position their assets to maximize opportunities for financial rewards and incentives.
In terms of retirement and financial independence, we help clients with everything from saving to investing, insurance to taxes and their estate. We make sure everything is in order for them to achieve their ultimate life goals.
ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE IN THE PROCESS OF SELECTING A FINANCIAL PLANNER?
Start with figuring out what you really need. Some people need expertise in one specific area like college planning. Others need a broader approach: Help with saving, creating a budget, and investing. Seek out planners who are truly fee-only so you’re not second-guessing their advice and recommendations! Is meeting in-person important to you or are you okay with virtual? Is working with someone local a must? Do they post all fees on their website for complete transparency? Ask for references. Lastly, require a minimum certification of the Certified Financial Planner designation in good standing.
If you are looking for help, feel free to contact me personally at carleton@mchenrycapital.com. We offer virtual as well as in-person meetings at our Bellevue location on the west side or in Leavenworth or Wenatchee if you come over the Cascades.

Author Sarah Adler cooking with her family
Born and raised in the PNW, Sarah Adler is a best-selling cookbook author, nutritionist, lifestyle expert, mother of two, and founder of Simply Real Health. For the last 10 years she has made it her mission to bring simplicity back to our food, our daily lives and to our headspaces. Which is very opposite of how we are taught about food in our modern-day culture. “I love encouraging people to forget about all the noise– the fads and trends that come and go, and to instead, learn about the beauty of simple, real food. And the calming, life-giving effect it has on the rest of our lives,” says Adler.
When Sarah became a mother, she started trying to figure out how to feed her baby and discovered there was nothing out there that combined her desire of serving real food and that
encouraged a wide palate of healthy foods. Not to mention finding something that kept it simple during postpartum and a busy schedule. That’s where the Simply Real Health Baby Food Files were born: taking the same principles Sarah teaches about real food, and applying them to our babies & kids.
“In the Baby Food Files, I walk you through every single month from 4-5 months up to 18 months and explain what to focus on, easy no-prep foods to feed them, and then recipes to try for each month and stage. It takes the overwhelm out of it, and gives you a step-by-step guide to follow to create real-food lovers!” says Adler.
For the complete Baby Food Files go to simplyrealbaby.com, and in the meantime check out one of Sarah’s kid-friendly recipes on the following page.

Should You Adopt a Kitten
Adult Cat?
The vast majority of people who decide to adopt a cat choose a kitten. Kittens are so cute they’re just irresistible. Many people like the idea of watching their pet grow and feel that by adopting a kitten they’re starting out with a “clean slate.”
What most people don’t realize is that caring for a kitten is a lot like caring for a baby. Young kittens need almost constant supervision. You have to safeguard their health: Electrical and computer cords, knickknacks, household cleaners, drawers, window screens, toilet bowls, your feet, and other pets can place a kitten’s safety at risk.
Kittens also have endless energy. Expect your kitten to spend its nights scaling your drapes and running up and down your stairs and across your countertops. Rarely will a young kitten sleep at the foot of your bed.
An adult cat, on the other hand, is usually much calmer and less likely to get into trouble. And, because an adult cat is fully-grown, you know what you’re getting in terms of personality and appearance. You can tell whether or not a cat is the type to sit on your lap, for example.
Depending on your own age and lifestyle, you may be better off adopting an adult cat. If you have a quiet lifestyle, work outside the home, or have children under six, consider adopting an adult cat or cats. Senior citizens are often unprepared for a kitten’s energy level and would actually get more enjoyment from adopting a calm adult or senior cat.
Young children move quickly and like to hug pets. Kids can accidentally hurt a small kitten, which might bite or scratch if it’s scared. The right adult cat, on the other hand, is more likely to tolerate children and less likely to be injured.
The best part about adopting an adult or senior cat? You’re literally saving a life. Because most people want to adopt kittens, a cat’s chances for adoption decrease with age. Most of these cats make wonderful pets when someone gives them a chance. MEOW is a no-kill shelter. The cats remain there, or in foster care, until they are adopted. Sadly, although the odds are improving, many older cats at shelters are euthanized. By adopting an adult cat, you are helping make room for more who might otherwise be put down.
MEOW does not place single kittens in catless homes or homes with only older cats. Kittens need a buddy. Somebody to wrestle with, to bite and scratch. Somebody to chase from one end of the room to the other. Somebody to curl up with for a nap. Certainly, they enjoy human companionship, love to play with you, and will learn that a human lap is one of the best possible places to nap. If they don’t have a buddy to wrestle with and bite and scratch, though, they may decide the human in their life is suitable for these activities. Once this inappropriate play behavior begins, it’s difficult to break. If you feel kittens are the best choice for you, two will be happier than one.
MEOW places approximately 800 animals each year, including several from MEOW Canine Division. Our adoption standards ensure that every animal is placed in an environment where there is appropriate space, human contact, and a commitment to safeguard and care for the pet for its entire lifetime.
