The Men's Issue

We are sharing some of Huntsville's finest this month. From a salt of the earth farming and development family to a group of paragliders to an outdoor enthusiast, this is an issue that may just conjure the call of the wild. As writer Bruce Martin says in his article Camp Bruce, "It’s interesting to me that in the creation story, when God created man and woman, he didn’t put them in a house or a building. He put them in a garden. He put them outside! We were made to be outside, an immersive experience engaging all five senses, connecting with God and nature in canopied forests, on rocky mountains, by rumbling streams and clear lakes."

Fly with us off Keel Mountain, hike Walls of Jericho, journey to the lush jungle of the Yucatan, and go back in time to 1814 when one Huntsville's family Legacy of Land began.

And in honor of our men's issue, an excerpt from my dad's favorite poem "If" by Rudyard Kipling:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,    And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,    Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,    Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,    And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Long. Live. Print.

LEGACY OF LAND

THE HAYS FAMILY ARE TRUE STEWARDS OF THIS LAND

HOMETOWN HERO | LIFE + CULTURE
ARTICLE BY AMY BAILEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOE DAVIS

“In 1814 under President James Madison, the Hays legacy of land began.”

It is a beautiful day as I look out over fields of Alabama red clay. Around me spring is in bloom the lavender shades of Red Bud speckle the tree lines and white Dogwood blooms dot the newly emerged shades of bright green coming from the branches of Maples, Oaks, Tulip Poplars, and Birch trees.

This is Alabama the Beautiful, called so because of its land and biodiversity. There are families who have called this land in Madison County home for centuries, one of those families is The Hays.

In April 1814 under President James Madison, the Hays legacy of land began. The first property was over 160 acres purchased at the corner of Drake and Triana. This began the Hays’ family business of buying and selling land.

On this day John Hays, Jimmy Hays, and Jeff Enfinger sit down to talk about their land, their family, and memories of growing up on the farm.

John Hays begins by saying, “In all we do we believe in providing park land for the people.” This is evident in their Hampton Cove development with the Hays Nature Preserve and now their 850 acre Hays Farm master planned community with over 500 acres reserved for park land and gifted to the city of Huntsville. Jeff Enfinger details, “The park plan is made up of three different kinds of parks, a passive park with walking trails, a recreational park, and an urban park similar to Big Spring Park.”

John says, “Another way to say it is that the people in this Hays Farm community live inside a big park.”

In 1906 Elgie Hays bought the property that is now Hays Farm and 5 generations have lived on that farm, that has always been a working farm from cotton to soy beans to cattle. In fact the infamous bovine Lily Flagg was raised on Hays Farm.

This working relationship with the farm and with this community is carried on in everything the Hays family does. “Our family believes in education of children, quality of life for the community, and protection of habitat,” John reads part of the family’s mission statement. Enjoyment of the land by this community is what the Hays family thrives on. For families to walk the trails, picnic in the green spaces, fish in the water, and simply breathe fresh air is the top goal in each development.

John, Jimmy, and Jeff each experienced this symbiotic relationship with the land growing up as part of the Hays family. As they begin talking about their childhood, Jimmy remembers family dinners with lots of conversation. “Mother would say if anyone started talking about other people, ‘We all have our feet under the table and this

shall go no further.’  and of course what she was saying was any gossip goes no further than this table.” He continues, “She would also tell us ‘Anything we say needs to be in the best interest of all concerned.’ “

John remembers when his dad ran the first telephone to the farm. “At that time the only telephone service was in downtown Huntsville and daddy decided he wanted telephone service at the farm. So he himself dug and set the poles connecting the wiring to the two farm houses, so we could have telephone service and talk back and forth.”

When asked about favorite memories of growing up on the farm John immediately says, “Hunting, we’ve always been a big hunting family. When I was little we would quail hunt and for whatever reason in the 50s and 60s we had an influx of ducks in the area, so I remember waking up early with our dogs and going wing hunting.”

The mention of their retrieving dogs brings up lots of memories. Jimmy begins to tell a story of an early morning hunt with a group of black Mallards. “The sun had heated up the ice and before we knew it we were all the way in the water, we eventually made it out and made it home thankful we didn’t freeze to death.”

“Our family believes in education of children, quality of life for the community, and protection of habitat.”

Jeff reminisces, “I lived away but would come here at holidays. I guess I began visiting every year when I was 10 or 12.” He laughs, “I think it was colder in the 60s, and John and Jimmy would always give me their boots to go duck hunting. Well the boots they would give me to go hunting in would always have holes in them. And of course being the young one I wasn’t allowed to complain!” Jeff remarks, “Even with frozen feet those memories on the farm are some of my favorites.”

When asked what is the craziest thing they have ever found on a development site, Enfinger replies, “A Mammoth tooth that was bigger than my hand.”

The legacy these three men have left on this community cannot be measured. And it speaks volumes in everything their hands touch.

John ends our conversation remarking on this legacy of land, “Through education people improve their lives, with an improved quality of life people are happier, and of course through wildlife and wildlife habitat protection we get to experience this earth through mother nature.”

YUCATAN DREAMING

An Eden on earth offering seaside lounging and accessible exploring

Salty, balmy sea air hits your nose as soon as you step off the plane. But there is more in the air: the sounds and scents of the lush jungle of the Yucatan. The gentle, warm breezes of the Gulf carry the scents of spices, sugary coconut groves, fruit trees, and rich herbs along the white sand beaches and through the dense jungle canopies. On your less than 2 hour flight to the Yucatan Peninsula you have been transported to this other worldly, tropical Eden called the Riviera Maya, home to Cancun, Mayakoba, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and other Mexican travel hot spots.

Despite its reputation as the ultimate Spring Break party destination, the Riviera Maya’s magic and sensuality draws visitors of all ages from allover the world. With an average year round temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit and a sea temperature that remains pleasant all year long, it is a sought after destination even in winter months. The scents of the jungle, the brilliant blue sea, and the endless adventures that this nature’s playground offers make it a place many return again and again.

CHICHEN ITZA

One of the New 7 Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza is among Mexico’s most visited and iconic archaeological sites. Known for its main central pyramid, this impressive Maya site—once the ceremonial center of the Yucatán—also features temples, ball courts, and a cenote (freshwater sinkhole).

RIO SECRETO

Rio Secreto, or the “Secret River,” is a series of caves carved out by the flow of an ancient underground river in Mexico. While the reserve is most famous for its large halfsunken cavern—a popular diving spot—you can also explore eerie passageways, swim in the river, and admire dripping stalactites, stalagmites, and colorful mineral formations.

TULUM

Tulum, the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city and a port for Coba, is one of the best preserved coastal Mayan cities in the Yucatan, you can also visit in tandem with

Chichen Itza and Ek Balam. Highlights of this archaeological site include the Temple of the Frescoes, which has spectacular figurines of the ‘diving god.’

ISLA MUJERES

Isla Mujeres (the “Island of Women”) is known for its rich marine life and pristine beaches. Here you can snorkel at Manchones Reef, scuba dive in the Cave of Sleeping Sharks, or stretch out on the white sands of North Beach (Playa Norte). On land you’ll find bustling nightlife, with oceanside bars and restaurants serving fresh seafood.

AKUMAL

Akumal is a small beach town located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Meaning “land of the turtles” in the Mayan language, Akumal is famous for its plentiful sea turtle population. Its secluded white-sand beaches and peaceful bays are also ideal for those seeking a more private experience.

PALANCAR REEF

The star attraction of Cozumel Reefs National Park (Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel), Palancar Reef is a rich underwater landscape ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving. Aquatic species thrive amidst these colorful corals, including sea turtles, rays, nurse sharks, barracudas, moray eels, and a kaleidoscope of colorful fish.

COZUMEL REEFS NATIONAL MARINE PARK

Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park encompasses the island’s best-known diving and snorkeling spots, including the Palancar, Columbia, and Paradise reefs, as well as the Devil’s Throat at Punta Sur and the shipwreck ofFelipe Xicoténcatl—a minesweeper ship used in WWII. The park houses up to 26 species of coral and 300 species of fish.

PUNTA SUR ECO BEACH PARK

Located on Cozumel’s southernmost tip, Punta Sur Eco Beach Park (Faro Celerain Ecological Reserve) spans 2,500 acres (1,011 hectares) of coastal wilderness, coral reefs, and Caribbean ocean. Here you can find ancient Maya ruins, a picturesque lighthouse, and sandy beaches—plus exotic birds, crocodiles, and sea turtles.

PARADISE REEF

One of Cozumel’s most popular dive sites, Paradise Reef (Paraíso Reef) is famous for its clear water, diverse coral structures, and teeming schools of colorful fish. Here you can spot large sea species such as eels, rays, and nurse sharks in addition to smaller creatures such as seahorses, and boxfish.

There is no shortage of adventure, history, romance, relaxation and fun that await you along the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

HIKE NEARBY TRAILS OR FARAWAY PLACES WITH OUTDOOR ENTHUSIAST BRUCE MARTIN

I have always loved the outdoors. As far back as the age of 5, I can remember climbing the mountains in Durango, Colorado with my dad, trout fishing in crystal clear streams, and sleeping under the stars. That love affair continues to this day! I’ve now logged over 8,000 miles on trails around the world including Patagonia and Machu Picchu in South America, and all over the United States on the Appalachian Trail and the High Sierras. And most of those miles were done with my best friend, Mark, or my son Zach.

I started Born 2 Be Wild, an outdoor adventure guide service, in 2003 after reading the book, “Wild at Heart” by John Eldridge. It’s a must-read for every guy on the masculine journey. The common paths, pitfalls, and purpose that every man experiences. And it struck me that the best place to help men on their journey would be in the great outdoors! A chance to get away from the comforts and stresses of life, and connect with God, nature, and a few other men. And it struck a chord. Many of the men who first hiked with me back in 2003 have continued to take new adventures with me to this day! (In 2016, I began leading co-ed hikes, and now have as many women as men going on trips.)

Maybe you’ve wanted to get outside, do a hike or backpacking trip, but didn’t know where to start. That’s where I can help. I offer a Walls of Jericho Backpacking 101 Adventure in the Spring and Fall. This is an overnight backpacking trip into the Walls of Jericho, less than an hour from Huntsville, Alabama. The Walls of Jericho is an easy downhill hike of 3-½ miles to Turkey Creek where we setup camp, then explore all the wonders that the Walls of Jericho has to offer: limestone cliffs, spectacular rock formations, cascading waterfalls, and depending on the season, wildflowers in the Spring, and brilliant autumn colors in the Fall. The following day we break down camp and have a moderate 3-½ mile uphill climb out of the walls back to the trailhead.

I see our guests enjoying themselves on our beautiful patio or inside the taproom with their family and friends, this makes me extremely happy.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOBBY?

Leisurely walks through Twickenham

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY?

My friend Clara planned a trip for us to New Orleans. We brunched at Dickey Brennan’s Tableau, sipped a Sazerac at Hotel Monteleone’s Carousel Bar, rode the streetcar uptown for a cup of crawfish étoufée at Superior Seafood, and enjoyed Pat O’s dueling piano bar.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST AND WHY?

Honesty, it is essential for building relationships both professionally and personally.

AND FINALLY, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DRINK AND ENTREE AT BEEZR?

My favorites are our handcrafted frapuccino martini and my current favorite dish is our Argét gumbo.

WHERE WERE YOU BORN?

Columbus, Georgia, my parents were stationed at Fort Benning.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT HONEST?

I’ve been with Honest since August 2018.

WHO WAS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSON IN YOUR LIFE?

I’d have to say that my Dad has to be one of the most influential people in my life. His views on leadership and how he leads and interacts with his staff at work has always been different to what I’ve seen in other leaders throughout my life.

WHAT DREW YOU TO THE SERVICE INDUSTRY?

I started working at a small coffee shop while I was in college and while I was there I discovered how much I enjoy working and interacting with people and finding something that they’ll enjoy. I also love being able to connect with so many parts of the community.

IT IS A GOOD DAY WHEN...

It’s cool (preferably rainy) and we’ve opened the garage door at the shop.

IT IS A BAD DAY WHEN...

I don’t get the opportunity to have coffee in the morning.

FAVORITE MEMORY?

My favorite memory is from a few years ago when I did a cycling tour and rode my bike down the southern coast of California over 5 days.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST AND WHY?

I really value the relationships in my life. I think growing with people and sharing life is one of the most important things in life.

AND FINALLY, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COFFEE DRINK? ALSO, HAVE YOU ALWAYS LOVED COFFEE?

I remember stealing sips out of my parents’ coffee cups as a kid and the first time I had a pour over on a trip while visiting a friend. From a cup of drip from Waffle House to a cappuccino at a local shop, There’s something about the whole experience that I enjoy. However, as much as I like coffee in all its forms, you’ll most likely catch me drinking a black iced coffee every morning.

WHERE WERE YOU BORN AND RAISED?

I was born and raised here in Huntsville, Alabama; on the campus of Oakwood University (formerly Oakwood College.)

FAVORITE CHILDHOOD MEMORY.

My parents would take me out for a drive on Saturday afternoons up to Green Mountain.

WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR SINGING VOICE?

I’ve been singing for as long as I’ve been talking; but I really never found my true voice until I became an adult and started taking voice lessons.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO FOLLOW YOUR PASSION FOR MUSIC?

Music has been a part of my family for generations. My great-grandmother was a minister of music at her church; my grandparents have been in singing groups; my mother was a part of the Aeolians of Oakwood University; and my uncle is a part of the world-renowned, grammy award winning, acapella group “Take 6.”

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST MENTOR AND WHY?

I have to give a shout out to my parents because if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am. If I had to choose my biggest mentor, it would have to be my voice teacher; Dr. Julie Moore-Foster; professor and chair of the Oakwood University Music Department.

IT’S A DIFFICULT DAY WHEN?

It’s hard when you don’t feel like yourself. There are days when I feel lonely and days when don’t feel like moving.

IT’S A GOOD DAY WHEN?

There’s positivity in the air, and happy, upbeat songs playing on my playlist.

“Music has been a part of my family for generations.”

These Huntsvillians take flight every week to soar with the eagles

“Those who have known flight are destined to walk with eyes cast skyward longing to return from whence they came.” This is one of many quotes you hear as Huntsville’s Robert Patterson speaks of his hobby and passion of free flight, also known as paragliding and hanggliding or in simple terms, flying without a motor. There is a gleam in his eye as he tells tales of cross country flying, catching thermals, and traversing

two hemispheres. In fact, the way Robert talks about paragliding is infectious. And if the proof is in the pudding, the crowd of a dozen or more that gather on Keel Mountain when the winds are just right proves how infectious this hobby is.

Over the phone Robert tells me, “You have to be an F-O-R to fly here, Friend of Robert to visit Keel Mountain.” There used to be 6 flying sites for paragliders and hang gliders in Alabama, now there is one and it is on the 42 acres owned by Patterson.

After a series of right turns inclining up Keel Mountain, a gathering of parked cars tells me I have found the launch site, directed not by GPS but by good ole hand written directions ‘take a right through a wooden gate down a dirt road...’

As you walk to the launch site, the trees clear and there before your eyes is a site to behold, the Tennessee Valley. Fields of gold and trees in varying shades of green line the landscape, a Blue Jay darts amongst the grass and wildflowers along the ridge, and the sky is vibrant blue. You are at 1600 feet above sea level.

On this day a crowd has gathered, some have been there since morning riding the wind. One paraglider rose 5,000 feet above sea level earlier in the day. Another named Brad is about to have his first official flight as a certified paraglider. Robert is a personal injury lawyer by trade, and is doing his pre-flight checklist as he gets geared up for his flight.

“Now you see that hawk over there?” asks Robert, “That hawk is doing just what we are doing, soaring and gliding. He is using the wind not flapping his wings. Just like he feels the wind to move up and down, that’s what we do in free flight.”

On a good day this crew’s flights can rise over 5,000 feet above sea level and last over an hour if they ‘hook’ a few thermals. Robert’s highest flight was at 17,999ft. Some days they may even go cross country which relatively means anything over 10 miles.

Patterson says, “The hardest part of learning to paraglide or hang glide is take off and landing. As I tell everyone who is curious, every take off guarantees a landing.”

One of Robert’s most memorable landings happened on a trip to Ecuador, an experience he calls “The Flight of Two Hemispheres.” Taking off along the coastal mountains it was a beautiful day. As Robert and his two fellow paragliders glided along the 5 mile ridge to the landing site, clouds began setting in. The most dangerous threat to any free flight trip is clouds because they carry with them turbulence. To avoid the clouds Robert kept going, rising and falling until in the distance he saw a spot clear enough to land. Passing over the Ecuadorian historical marker designating the Equator, Robert landed in the Northern hemisphere. Their flight had begun in the Southern hemisphere. That was his most thrilling and memorable flight.

For 15 years Robert ran a hang gliding  school. When people began asking him to teach them, he did. Not for profit, merely for love of this sport.

He also held the record for cross country flight in Alabama at 55 miles, until one of his students broke that record and the two began going back and forth as Alabama record holders of free flight distance.

What Robert loves most about his passion, “I love hearing people’s stories.” From Germany to Australia to a recent man from Russia, the people that gather on Keel Mountain are from allover the world. Alongside NASA scientists, lawyers, doctors, business owners, and younger enthusiasts, there is always a group of avid lovers of hang gliding and paragliding ready for flight when the north winds are just right.

After spending the afternoon watching launch after launch, I am hooked and make plans myself to return on the next sunny, north wind day.

If you are interested in learning more about hang gliding or paragliding, Robert recommends first spending the day watching launches and experiencing a tandem flight. He also recommends a nearby school Flying Camp right across the Tennessee state line in the Sequatchie Valley near Chattanooga. He says, “Tell them Robert sent you.”

Some lawyers play golf, some jog or hunt, Patterson runs off a bluff to fly like a bird. When asked why he loves this sport so much, he replies, “It’s like so much of my life, with every take off, every start, I don’t know where I’m going, but I know I’m on my way.”

My Dad

LAWYER DEREK SIMPSON SHARES ABOUT HIS FATHER, LAWYER FRED SIMPSON

My Dad, Fred Simpson, was a true Renaissance Man. He accomplished so much despite his impoverished upbringing. While working as a police officer at night and attending college during the day, he allowed himself to dream of a completely different life.  He was the first in his family to graduate from college.  He applied and was accepted to Vanderbilt Law School, one of the one of the most prestigious law schools in the country.

Upon graduation, he moved to a small up-and-coming town in North Alabama called Huntsville.  A few years later he was appointed to be the Madison County District Attorney, an office he held for 12 years.  During this time, he developed a reputation as a ferocious prosecutor and excellent trial attorney.  After leaving the DA’s office, he started his own law firm and specialized in representing those charged with capital murder.

Although the accolades my dad received as a trial lawyer were numerous, it is the other areas of his life that are so unique and special.  He was a world-class artist and painter.  It was obviously a special gift because he never had any formal training.  Some of his drawings and paintings are still hanging in the Madison County Court House.

An avid reader of history, he wrote and published a book entitled  The Sins of Madison County  about the lynchings that occurred on our Courthouse square, and another book entitled  Murder in the Heart of Dixie that details thirteen capital murder cases in Madison County where the jury unanimously recommended the death penalty.  He also published a historical picture book of downtown Huntsville called Huntsville Then and Now

He worked tirelessly with city and county leaders to revitalize downtown Huntsville and always said that one day Huntsville will be the best and biggest city in the state. Oh, how I wish he could see Huntsville now.

The best gift he gave was showing me how a father should love his children and family unconditionally, and insist that we pass our blessing onto the next generation. I miss you, Dad.

WHERE WERE YOU BORN?

I was born in Winston-Salem, NC, along Tobacco Road. Home of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Texas Pete, and R.J. Reynolds.

My house was always a hub of kids in and out. My parents never knew how to say “no” to friends coming over and hanging out. There were a lot of sports. Whatever sport was in season, I was playing it. Everything…baseball, basketball, soccer, football, golf. If I sit back and reminisce, I remember my bike was all the freedom that I needed and I used to ride that thing everywhere.

“FOR YOUNGER PATIENTS

ESPECIALLY, WE WORK AT THEIR PACE AND TRY TO KEEP THEIR VISITS SHORT AND HAPPY. ”

DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE A

DENTIST?

I did not go to dental school until later in life, I was 31 when it began. After college, I worked in advertising and sales and during the economic downturn of 2008 while working for a bank, I lost my job. That was when my wife Riley and I decided that I would pursue dental school. However, I had a degree in Economics, so I had to take all the pre-dental/pre-medical prerequisite courses. I was newly married and a new dad, so it was a lot to handle. We might not have made it without both sets of our parents and all the help that they provided. Riley and I were young when we got married and losing my job was a tough blow early in a marriage. We certainly did not know what lay ahead but Riley kept it all going. She worked full-time and handled everything at home while I spent time at school and during my residency. She is the unsung hero of our story.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO HUNTSVILLE?

My wife’s hometown is Huntsville, so we decided moving here was the best choice for our family. We have been here since June of 2018, and it has been fantastic to put down roots in a blossoming city like this. There are now 3 children in total, a 13-year-old daughter and two sons, one is 8 and the youngest is 3. Add in our 2 dogs, Charlie and Duck, and it is a house full of chaos.

WHAT SETS PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY APART?

I think as pediatric dentists, we set ourselves apart as a specialty in the methods we use to help create willing and cooperative participants in their dental visits. Everyone has their own style but at the end of the day, it’s the time we are willing to spend managing a child’s fear and behavior that makes the biggest impact.  Just like I would want a trained endodontist to do a difficult root canal on my tooth, I want parents to realize that we specialize in children’s care. For pediatric dentists, the difficulty is ensuring that our patients want to climb back in the dental chair after getting through something that they thought was going to be scary or painful. For younger patients especially, we work at their pace and try to keep their visits short and happy.

WERE YOU EVER AFRAID OF THE DENTIST?

As a child, I don’t think that I was ever afraid of the dentist. I remember not liking fluoride treatments because of how bad it tasted. But man, we have come a long way, and that part is much better nowadays. I had my first filling done when I was 12 years old. I still have the same filling today. The doctor who did it, Dr Wanick was from a bygone era of dentistry. I remember he moonlighted as a taxidermist and he had a little refrigerator with glass-bottled cokes in his waiting room. While things have changed a lot since those days, the goal remains the same…to keep your patients comfortable! Although I am not sure I will offer cokes anytime soon.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE CHILDREN’S BOOKS?

I remember reading The Berenstain Bears and The Spooky Old Tree over and over as a little kid. There was a schoolyard across the street from my childhood home and my dad had convinced me that the big old oak tree at one end of the field was the actual Spooky Old Tree. All three of my kids have had that book read to them.

FAVORITE SPORTS TEAM?

I bleed Carolina Blue. I love sports and watch them all. This year, I watched UNC lose to Alabama in the Sweet 16 with four Alabama fans and I will just say that it was not my favorite experience.
