Sunbeams shining against my skin as I twirled around in circles among the Queen Anne’s Lace that grew in the field between my grandmother’s and great-grandmother’s homes. On summer days like this it felt like joy might burst through my chest. Days filled with nature walks, chasing butterflies, picking wild blackberries, sitting on kitchen countertops and front porches, cutting open a watermelon so fresh it cracks down the middle, and ending the day telling stories and gazing at lightning bugs and stars. I thought everyone grew up this way - climbing over fences and up trees, swinging so high you just knew you were going to swing clear over the oak branch, planting seeds in truck patch gardens and eating tomato sandwiches, catching catfish in the closest fishing hole, singing from hymnals in your Sunday best, and eating cobbler and homemade ice cream. Little did I know I was living in a place more akin to a Eudora Welty novel than the real world. A place where time seems to know better than to interfere with traditions, food, and culture.

One of the great assets of living in North Alabama is its waterways. With beautiful lakes in all directions, it is no surprise why many people choose second homes nearby. Jaunt down 65 for about an hour and you will discover Lewis Smith Lake, more commonly known as Smith Lake. With approximately 22,000 acres of deep, clean, emerald green water, it has become much sought after shoreline. Noted as one of the cleanest lakes not only in the Southeast, but also in the country, Smith Lake is a retreat for many families, including the Parks.
Perched high above the water among the wild magnolias and blackberries with beautiful views of the landscape, the moment you step
into the Parks’ lake house you feel your blood pressure lower and your mind calm. The neutral tones of the home paired with gorgeous greens that reflect the hues of the outdoors surrounding the house, relax you and draw you into the quiet, serene refuge they have created.
Chris and Susan Parks are accustomed to a variety of moving parts both literally and figuratively. Both are practicing physicians in Huntsville, parents to four active children, and still manage to be involved in their community and church. While juggling work, sporting events, and their social calendar leaves their schedule tight, they knew a cozy reprieve at Smith Lake would be the perfect place to get away and unwind.
Why did the Parks choose Smith Lake? The lake itself. “We chose Smith Lake for many reasons, but there is one defining element that had no comparison in our region…the water!” After researching drivable options, they found that Smith Lake has been nationally recognized as one of the cleanest and clearest lakes ever created in the US, making all of the many water sports and activities all the more enjoyable. They love that it is just far enough away from Huntsville to feel like a vacation spot, but close enough to make an easy weekend trip. “Smith Lake is our family’s escape from the stresses of everyday life. The clear emerald waters and towering rock shorelines make it a special place like none other in the Southeast.”
Growing up, both Susan and Chris were river people. Chris, having spent his childhood vacationing on the northern portion of the Tennessee River, and Susan in the southern portion in Alabama. They opted to “plant their family right in the middle at Smith Lake.” With close proximity to Huntsville, it is easy to see why it was such a desirable option.
When questioned how much time they are able to spend at their beautiful lake home, they felt it was not nearly enough. “The hustle and bustle of everyday life makes it challenging to get as much time as we want on the lake, but certainly makes every minute we spend there that much sweeter.”
The Parks’ airy and peaceful home creates the ideal space for family time and provides the perfect backdrop for a sunrise cup of coffee. “It creates the perfect balance between a quiet and restful retreat that can turn into a party full of fun times in the sun at any given moment.” It’s spacious enough to host friends and extended family, and no detail has been left unfinished.

Susan enlisted the help of Victoria Byrom of Victoria’s Interiors in Huntsville to make this lovely spot her own. The exposed white oak ceilings, extensive natural light, and earthy neutral color palette make the home feel serene and crisp. Susan describes her desired design elements of a lake house to be a combination of craftsman and rustic, while still having classic and contemporary design elements and finishes.
Her favorite design elements include the decorative shiplap walls, the bluestone patio, soaring wood ceilings, and elevated screened porch. Outdoors there is an extended porch area with an in-ground hot tub that provides a breathtaking view of the water. Another functional, yet chic feature is the garage door basement featuring an exquisitely decorated family room and bunk beds that opens to the outdoors for easy inside/outside entertaining and fun. Artwork and rugs along with pops of green fabric bring color into the home that also reflects nature, while textures in both finishes and furniture add depth and personality to each room. While serenity is the driving force behind interiors, sophistication can be felt in every nook and around every corner.
With such a classic lake house aesthetic, the Parks feel that this will be a second home full of memory making for years to come.
“We were careful in selecting a home that was very livable for our family of six but could easily accommodate and be comfortable for our many friends and family who would visit. We are in a quiet cove just down from the Trident Marina that is still near all the action.”
Having owned the home for only a short time, there have already been ample opportunities for building memories. An activity that has quickly become a tradition is what they refer to as a “sunset cruise.” The kids love to take an evening boat ride with the entire family enjoying the sunset on the lake, rocking tunes and watching neon lights provided by the marina in close proximity to their home base.
Their young and active family not only enjoys boat rides, but also a diverse variety of water sports. From paddleboarding and water trampolining off their beautiful dock to tubing, skiing, and wakeboarding, there is truly an activity for everyone to enjoy. “Capping off a long day on the water with a sunset view from the dock is hard to beat.”
For someone thinking of purchasing a second home at the lake, the Parks advise, “Find a place where you know you are on vacation as soon as you walk in the front door, and one that is nearly impossible to leave when it is time to get back to reality.” It seems they have found just the spot to call their own.

Swimming in Lake Sainte-Croix, picnicking in lavender fields, hiking the Verdon Gorge, and cooking classes in Provencal kitchens
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY BAILEY
As we pulled off the side of the road to photograph the sun setting over the village of Bauduen where little cafes and restaurants line the turquoise blue waters of Lake Sainte-Croix, a couple pulled into the overlook and got out a small folding table. They then proceeded to pull out two stools, then a tablecloth, then two flute glasses, then a bottle of champagne, and then an array of cheeses, olives, apricots, and strawberries. They weren’t just watching the sunset, they were getting immersed in sunset. Seeing this simple, yet beautiful display pop up with such ease and intention resonated deeply, and I began to
ponder How can I slow down enough to bring beauty into life’s simple, everyday moments? Provencal life lesson: Always be ready for an impromptu picnic. Note to self: Start carrying a small folding table in the car.
One of the things I love most about France is seeing people pulled off the road under big chestnut trees, in lavender fields, or families along the shore with big blankets and beautiful food enjoying long, leisurely summer picnics.
In 2018 we made our first trip to the South of France. We spent the last days of that trip in Provence. When researching lavender fields and hiking trails, I randomly discovered a whimsical bed & breakfast named Hotel des Colonnes in the ancient Roman town of Riez, nestled among the lavender fields of the Valensole Plateau and situated near the ‘Grand Canyon of France,’ the Verdon Gorge. The next year we went back to that exact spot and spent a month. For someone who travels regularly, always excited about new destinations to explore, I had found something in Provence that was different, a sense of place that was special. I am reminded what French author Guy de Maupassant said, “There are some delightful places in this world which have a sensual charm for the eyes. One loves them with a physical love. Sometimes indeed the memory goes back towards a spot on a river bank or an orchard in blossom, glimpsed only once on a happy day, but preserved in our heart.”
Of course travel ceased and during the pandemic I would find my mind drifting back to this place for
comfort, for inspiration, for hope. So as soon as travel opened back up, I returned again the summer of 2022.
What makes a bed and breakfast? The breakfast? Perhaps, but I believe it’s the owner. Our intimate courtyard mornings, the whimsical decor, the colorful shop of handmade French goods certainly make the experience at Riez’s Hotel des Colonnes all the more charming, but it is the owner Geraldine that is the highlight. Her vibrant personality and her knowledge of the area has made each visit to Provence beyond anything we could have dreamed. On our very first visit we wanted to picnic and explore Lake Sainte-Croix. She gave us driving directions and then said, “You will see a sign that says No Swimming, that’s where you go!” On another trip she told us about a secret spot among the lavender fields to have a secluded picnic. This past summer she and her friends hosted me for a cooking class which began with a swim in a pool fed by a mountain spring, then a gathering in a gorgeous Provencal home learning how to cook Farcis, and ending with dinner underneath a 300-year-old chestnut tree where monks used to come to pray. Swimming in Lake Sainte-Croix, picnicking in lavender fields and under chestnut trees, hiking the Verdon Gorge, and cooking in Provencal kitchens - all of these adventures feel like scenes straight out of a painting.
That so much beauty and adventure can exist within an approximately 100-mile radius is why I return again and again.
“There are some delightful places in this world which have a sensual charm for the eyes. One loves them with a physical love. Sometimes indeed the memory goes back towards a spot on a river bank or an orchard in blossom, glimpsed only once on a happy day, but preserved in our heart.” - Guy de Maupassant, French Author
Moustiers, as it is called for short, is where the intricate artistry of faience was founded, a special type of tin-glazed pottery and the official serving ware of Louis XIV. Named one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages over and over again. Le Bastide de Moustiers is a Michelin-rated dining experience unlike any other.
Home to the highest density of lavender fields, Valensole sits high atop a hill just a mere 20 minutes from Riez.
A lush hamlet by the Lake of Esparron, there is no shortage of water activities, but one of the most charming parts of this village are the potters and artisans tucked behind hidden streets with studios you can visit.
Like many Provencal villages, Sisteron has a castle, but unlike many villages, that castle is built into the top of a mountain. This gateway to Provence is over 4,000 years old (let that sink in), originally occupied by the Romans and is rated one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages.
“That so much beauty and adventure can exist within an approximately 100-mile radius is why I return again and again.”
Known for two things: a special kind of goat cheese wrapped in dried chestnut leaves and one of the best bookstores in the world. A four-story haven of all types of books, people travel deep into the heart of Provence just to visit this bookstore.
Another beauty, highly visited by tourists but worth your time to stop and pursue the many shops, take photos, and if you have time, stay the night.
The best Brocant market in France, aka antique market. Filled with the most beautiful French antique shops, this charming village has its own personality and distinctive water wheels scattered throughout the village.
Home to upscale French boutiques and mouth-watering cafes, bring your best camera because you will want to capture every nook and corner of this special place.
In this potter’s village you will discover many artisans working in their studios. Narrow streets lined with very colorful houses, galleries, and an ancient pottery kiln make this one of my most-loved experiences in Provence.
This lakeside town is a perfect place to relax the day away. Rent a petite bateau then enjoy cafe Papillion.
Feeling adventurous? A bucket list hiking experience, The Calanques of Cassis are more than worth the day trip. Bring a backpack with a blanket, plenty of water, and food, and enjoy the vibrant blue water of Calanque d’En-Vau.
Although it is the extraordinary that made me want to return to Provence, it is the ordinary that I have fallen in love with. It is the day-to-day moments - it is the simplicity of petit dejeuner in the garden, it is the natural beauty, it is the connection to the land and everything it produces, it is the way time seems to stand still, and it is the fellowship of the people that captures your heart.
One night as our trip neared its end, we walked past an ornate two-story carousel. I turned to my daughter and asked, “Are you too big to ride a carousel?” She looked at me with the strangest look on her face and said, “No, are you?” It is quite possibly the biggest joy of being a parent, rediscovering and seeing this world through our child’s lens, Provence brings out this wonder like no other place I’ve traveled.
Au revoir doesn’t just mean goodbye, it means until we meet again. Au revoir Provence, until we meet again.
Getting There: Fly into Nice or Marseille and rent a car. You must have a car to truly experience Provence.
“One of the things I love most about France is seeing people pulled off the road under big chestnut trees, in lavender fields, or families along the shore with big blankets and beautiful food enjoying long, leisurely summer picnics.”

It’s the most wonderful time of the year - peach season! Anyone who lives in the South knows that this divine fruit is what Southern food dreams are made of. With a basket full of peaches from the farmers market and a love for ice box pie, it’s time for my all-time favorite dessert, Peaches and Cream Ice Box Pie.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY BAILEY
A trip to the farmers market in summer is an essential part of the Southern experience. With fruits and vegetables overflowing from farms and truck patches, canned jams and jellies from local purveyors, locally made salsas and seasonings, and freshly baked goods, summer is the time to savor the flavors of the region.
The summer season brings with it green beans, lady peas, yellow squash, beets, peaches, zucchini, eggplant, okra, and of course the grand dame of them all - The Tomato.
It must not have been tomato season in the Garden of Eden or Eve would have clearly tempted Adam with a tomato. This food from God’s hands is eaten fresh, stewed, fried, and even made into pies in the Deep South.
Every Southerner knows that the best tomato is one grown in your own backyard. Whether you have raised beds full of heirlooms or containers filled with branches weighed down heavy with cherry tomatoes, these gifts of summer come sweetest the closer they are grown to your kitchen.
If you can’t grow your own, the second runner-up is the farmers market. Each market has that one special farmer who is known for the best tomatoes. If you must buy from the grocery store, only do so in summer. It’s just not worth eating tomatoes out of season.
These divine creatures come in all sorts of colors and funny names: Cherokee Purple, German Queen, Mr. Stripey, Brandywine, Green Zebra.
1. Sliced On A Veggie Plate - Slice that fresh tomato and sprinkle with a little salt.
2. Tomato Sandwich - Some will argue, but I love my tomato sandwich with slightly toasted bread, a little olive oil and salt, and a slather of Duke’s Mayonnaise.
3. Caprese Salad - Sliced and paired with mozzarella, evoo, fresh basil, and salt.
4. Heirloom Tomato Salsa - Years ago, when my husband and I were newlyweds, thanks to the advice of some dear foodie friends, I actually opened the food processor we got as a wedding present, and began making my own salsa. Over the years it has evolved from store-bought tomatoes to farmers market tomatoes. There is nothing quite as good as freshly made salsa in summertime. Here’s the recipe:
• 1/4 cup cilantro
• 1/2 jalapeño (whole if you like it spicy)
• 1/4 red onion, diced
• 1 clove garlic, sliced
• 1 tsp salt
• 1 tsp pepper
• 1/4 cup freshly-squeezed lime juice
• 2 cups heirloom tomatoes, chopped into chunks
DIRECTIONS:
1. In a food processor, combine all ingredients in order listed. It is important to put the herbs and spice on bottom so they chop up properly.
2. Process until blended yet still a little chunky.
3. Chill and serve with tortilla chips.
A local favorite without the food processor - Muchacha de Masias found regularly at MidCity Market.
Another tried and true flavor of Southern summers: The Cobbler. Fan favorites are made with either freshly picked peaches or blackberries which abound in local markets during mid-summer. Cobblers originated in America when colonists couldn’t find suitable ingredients for traditional English pudding. So they opted for stewed fruit topped with batter and baked. These dishes became so popular they were often served for breakfast or as a main course.
• 1 tbsp butter
• 3 cups fresh blackberries or sliced peaches
• Sugar to taste
• 4 tbsp butter
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 cup self-rising flour
• 1 cup milk
• Dash of vanilla
• Pinch of salt
DIRECTIONS:
1. Cook fruit in butter and add sugar to taste. Simmer until soft and creamy.
2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk sugar, flour, milk, vanilla and salt.
3. Heat 4 tbsp butter in a 9 inch iron skillet. Remove from heat once melted. Pour flour mixture into skillet. Top with fruit mixture and let sink into batter. Bake 30 minutes. Check at 25 minutes.
4. When lightly golden brown, remove from oven and let stand 10 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream if you’re a traditionalist.
Need a quick fix of sweet summer goodness you can simply slather on bread or a biscuit? Shop The Mason Jar Canning and Home and her decadent line of canned jams, jellies, and pickles. Find The Mason Jar regularly at MidCity Market and Greene Street Market.

I met friends from as far away as Cincinnati who became pen pals. That summer was pivotal for me, including accepting an offer for my first job to be at the Space & Rocket Center...where I actually did meet astronauts."
"My parents were Thai immigrants who moved from Chicago to Vicksburg, Mississippi for the Army Corp of Engineers. All my favorite summer memories are centered around visits to the historic sites with cannons on the bluffs high above the river where we would picnic. It was a simpler time."

A walk through downtown Huntsville reveals some of Alabama’s oldest gardens, while a drive through Jones Valley or The Ledges may uncover a hydrangea haven or Provencalinspired watering hole. Hidden behind iron gates and stone retaining walls, you may hear a babbling fountain or spy a patinated statue, and sometimes you may catch a glimpse of turquoise waters nestled among an ivygrown treillage and Japanese maples. The way Southerners carefully curate outdoor spaces is part of our history and culture. From heirloom seeds passed down for generations to digging up bulbs and gifting neighbors, our gardens breed love and life.
