“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy…”
GeorgeGershwin, Porgy & Bess
After a wet and windy spring, June has finally arrived in the City by the Lake. At long last, we get to enjoy several months of long days, blue skies, warm temperatures and the cool waters of Old Hickory Lake.
Time seems to slow down a bit during the summer, which contributes to the feeling of living easy. Despite the slower pace, there is always something exciting happening in the 37075, and your Hendersonville Lifestyle team is ready to help our readers celebrate the return of summer.
June is also the month in which we celebrate Father’s Day, the day that we take the time to show our dads how much we love and appreciate them. In recognition of this special holiday, we dedicate the June issue of Hendersonville Lifestyle to honoring all the special men in our lives.
We begin this month’s journey by introducing you to three outstanding gentlemen who have gone above and beyond to make our community such a great place to live, work and play.
Next, we visit with a local amateur astronomer who shows us how to capture the beauty of the night sky from the comfort of our back yards.
Continuing, we take a fresh look at one of today’s most popular trends for guys – the transformation of the humble garage from a traditional storage space into a stylish man cave.
Along the way, be sure to check out our City Scene and Business Monthly sections. They will keep you informed about many of the great events and activities taking place across our community.
Okay, Gents… It’s your month. Thank you for all that you do for your families and for our community.
So now it time to slather on the sunscreen, grab a cool drink and get your summer started.
We’ll see you around town soon!

NEW SMART TELESCOPES MAKE BACKYARD STARGAZING FUN
Before these words were first spoken by Captain Kirk in the classic television series “Star Trek”, I was already a huge space fan. SInce childhood, I have been fascinated by the beauty and mystery of the night sky.
Ironically, my interest in space developed simultaneously with my love of photography. Although I could observe objects such as the Moon and the larger planets such as Jupiter and Saturn, my ultimate dream was to be able to photograph them in all of their glory, just like the great observatories across the world.
However, the time was not yet right for me to jump into astrophotography. My spirit was willing, but technology and my budget were not.
Over the decades, life happened. I went to college, married, started my career and raised two sons. There was just little room in my life for space – until 2017, the year of the great Middle Tennessee total solar eclipse.

Totality - Metropolis, IL - April 2024 Hendersonville Lifestyle editor Rick Murray prepares to image the 2024 total solar eclipse.Seizing upon the opportunity, I started preparing. I purchased telescopes, tracking mounts, solar filters and more to be ready. Fortunately, my hard work paid off, and I was able to capture and share some great images of the eclipse.
After the eclipse, I decided to continue my celestial journey by learning to photograph the Moon, planets and deep sky objects such as galaxies, star clusters and nebulae. At first, it was fun. However, I soon began to grow weary of dealing with light pollution, heavy equipment and long set up/ tear down times. As a result, I found myself imaging less and less.
During fall 2023, I learned about a new generation of small, lightweight and inexpensive “smart” telescopes that promised to deliver high quality astrophotography with significantly less effort and expense. After doing some research, I purchased two of the units in early 2024 – the ZWO Seestar S50 and the Dwarf Labs Dwarf II. Each telescope was only about $500, which is considerably less than traditional astrophotography gear. They are available at many telescope retailers, including Amazon and Agena Astro.
Although skeptical at first, I soon learned that these telescopes live up to their hype. Driven by smartphone apps, both devices set up in just minutes, and they deliver beautiful results. Since January, I have captured dozens of objects, including the Andromeda Galaxy, the Orion Nebula, the Pleiades Star Cluster and the Horsehead Nebula. In addition, I was able to capture my second total solar eclipse in Metropolis, IL on Apr. 8.
Comet P12/Pons-Brooks - February 2024
Successful imaging of celestial objects has traditionally been dependent upon several key factors, including expensive telescopes and cameras, complicated set up and alignment procedures, complex learning curves, long exposure times and the presence of clear, dark skies at the observation site. As a result, these requirements have deterred many would-be space buffs from pursuing astronomy as a hobby. Over the past few years, a new generation of “smart” telescopes have appeared have overcome most of these issues. By leveraging sophisticated computing and imaging technologies, these telescopes are able to deliver amazing space images with much less cost and effort than in the past.
Thanks to the innovation of smart telescopes, my voyage into the cosmos continues.

Well-designedgarages have plenty

Everyone has a space that they love to call their own. It is an area of the home that reflects the interests and personality of its primary user. From elaborate kitchens to fun-filled family rooms, we all want to have an area that we can call our own.
For guys, the happy place is often the garage. Despite its traditionally inornate appearance, it is the place where many of our favorite things reside when not in use. Autos, tools and outdoor equipment – let’s face it – the garage is a great place for guys to hang out with their buddies.
Over the past few years, however, the humble garage has undergone a renaissance. Instead of just serving as a storage area, it has become the new man cave. Dreary concrete floors and drab shelving have been replaced with flat panel televisions, sound systems, sports memorabilia, fitness equipment and more to transform a formerly drab location into comfortable living space.
To find out more about this trend, Hendersonville Lifestyle sat down with Andy Peyret, the owner of the Garage Floor Company. Andy has been involved in garage remodeling and other home improvements for over fifteen years. Specializing in garage floors, the company offers over 250 colors to choose from, including custom blends designed around homeowner preferences, such as their favorite sports teams.
“After spending so much time at home during the pandemic, many homeowners have continued to try and maximize their usable home space. A garage offers a great opportunity for additional square footage to use as a home gym, play space for kids, lounge area, outdoor space during the winter and even a home office. With the right planning and organization, a garage can be transformed into a comfortable and inviting room.”
Garages are the perfect places for home gyms, particularly with flat panel televisions on the wall.
Once the floor has been laid, the garage space can be repurposed to make a comfortable living space.
“
The unique thing about garage transformations is that they do not affect your day-to-day lifestyle.
A well-organized garage with a custom woodworking bench is ready for home projects.
Drab walls are no more as sports enthusiasts adorn them with memorabilia. Custom floor coating makes all the difference in garage rebuilds. An exterior view of a custom garage that's perfect for a car enthusiast.WHAT FACTORS SHOULD HOMEOWNERS CONSIDER IN RENOVATING THEIR GARAGES?
“The number one factor in renovations is to decide how the homeowner wants to use the garage. They should evaluate their home to determine features it is lacking that they would like to build out into the garage, e.g. a game room or a home gym. Once a homeowner knows what he wants, then the renovator can turn the dream into a reality.”
ARE THE MOST POPULAR GARAGE ADDITIONS IN 2024?
“Despite the many options available today, the primary consideration in redesigns is still storage – finding an efficient place to store everything that is taking up space in the garage. Once everything has been organized and moved off of the floor, then homeowners can determine the best use for the newfound space.”
WHAT KIND OF BUDGET SHOULD A HOMEOWNER PLAN FOR A TYPICAL GARAGE REBUILD?
“While this question is always asked, it is one of the most difficult to answer. Price is dependent upon many factors including, but not limited to, the size of the garage, its current condition, materials and the full extent of services needed to transform the space. We always do a lot of due diligence before we begin a project so that the homeowner understands every line item.”
“As with the budget, the installation time depends upon several factors, including the complexity of the design and the desired additions. Once the garage has been cleared, we begin the floor coating process, which takes approximately two days. Our flooring finishing is a multi-step process that guarantees maximum durability and protection with commercial grade polyaspartics and epoxies. Depending upon the extent of the remodel, finishing out the storage and new functionality can take several additional days.”
