Hi, Ladies!
This issue brings me so much joy.
If you’ve been following along since I took over the magazine, you’ve likely noticed that I’m a huge proponent of girl power.

I’m grateful to have been surrounded by powerhouse women my entire life. I was raised by a single mother who trailblazed her way through law school at a time when there weren’t many female lawyers. She became a partner at a major law firm, and eventually took a huge chance out on her own, building a successful law firm that operated for more than 20 years. When we thought she was winding down for retirement, she took a position as a judge, which always makes me laugh because she’s been passing judgement on my life choices since birth!
I used to complain about having to go to her office or the courthouse when I was little. I didn’t realize how lucky I was until much later. I had a front row seat of what was possible for women.
In school, I was encouraged to get good grades and speak up in class. I was told that my voice mattered and was valued. I assumed the world wanted to hear what I had to say, and often shared my opinion. I realize that this isn’t always the case, but it should be!
While I was born one of the girly-est girls, I was encouraged to play sports because I was reminded that it was a privilege as our mother’s generation couldn’t. I’m 37 years old, and my mother wasn’t allowed to play sports in high school. INSANITY!
As a female business owner, it’s not lost on me that I would have been required to have a male co-signer to acquire this magazine until 1988 - that’s only 36 years ago. I think about these statistics and appreciate so many women around me doing amazing things. I’ve been privileged to work alongside some incredible women that are lifting each other up, supporting one another, and taking on the world, and I am so grateful for the examples they’ve set.
This month, we honor the ladies: moms, grandmas, sisters, aunts, best friends, and all of those who work hard to get it done every day. We see you; we support you, and, this month, we salute you.
This one’s for the girls and we hope you love it,

THE THRILL OF WOMEN’S SPORTS

Not all heroes wear capes, some wear kneepads
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER FLORENDO PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF VEGAS THRILL AND PRO VOLLEYBALL FEDERATIONThe fact that we can talk about professional sports in Southern Nevada is not lost on anyone who has lived here for more than a decade. It was less than that when the first rumblings of professional sports were heard. Whether you thought that a new team would flop or triumph, there is no denying that Las Vegas has doubled down on being home to professional sports teams.

"There is an incredible amount of pride in the people who live here. You don’t see that everywhere."
The area’s newest addition is Vegas Thrill, Las Vegas’ home team in the newly established Pro Volleyball Federation. This world-class volleyball team’s official home court is the Lee's Family Forum in Henderson and is being welcomed in the only way our community knows how: with open arms.
How the community receives sports teams wasn’t lost on Vegas Thrill’s head coach, Fran Flory, either. It was enough to dissolve her skepticism, she did not think of herself as a glitzy or glamorous Vegas person, and came out of retirement for the position.
“There is an incredible amount of pride in the people from here and who live here. You don’t see that everywhere,” said Coach Flory. “They are very prideful of not just living here, but also the events that happen here, and the teams that compete here. It’s amazing.”
Flory had retired from coaching collegiate volleyball to care for her mother, who passed away in November. “My mom had a saying, ‘c’est la vie.’ Anything that was a challenge, she would throw her hands up and say, ‘c’est la vie. Pick up the pieces and

keep going.” That is what she did, and within two months, Flory was in Las Vegas taking on the challenge of building the Vegas Thrill. “Things happen for a reason,” said Flory, “You get put in the situation the good Lord wants you in.”
The timing is more than opportune for the team, as the popularity of women’s sports is growing. “It’s about d*mn time,” said Flory of the recent surge in women’s sports viewership. “I’ve been doing this a long time, women are beginning to get the coverage and credit for being athletic, not just looking pretty.”
She has a theory on just when and how the tables turned in women’s sports. It started about 12 to 15 years ago when she noticed that the demographics at recruiting events started to change. Before that, it was mostly all mothers and daughters. “You wouldn’t see any dads or brothers. Well, not many. It was all women, and then the trend changed,” says Flory, “I think that men, fathers specifically, started to become proud of their daughters’ athletic achievements and the doors that had opened.”
Fast forward to February and the Thrill’s first home opener, which was sold out and packed with locals, celebrities, and community leaders. “It was super emotional. When I walked into the building for the first time, I shed a few tears, saying here we are, we are doing it. I was amazed by the initial investment without ever seeing the product, they came in on blind faith that this was going to be something worth investing in; something worth being a part of. It was special for the fans, and it was certainly special for us,” she continued.
"It's about d*mn time...I've been doing this a long time, women are beginning to get the coverage and credit for being athletic, not just looking pretty."

Both the team and Coach Flory understand the honor and responsibility of standing for both the sport of volleyball and the Las Vegas community. “I think that our women can be role models not just for the sport but for the community. I want our women to be the heroes of Vegas,” said Flory. Heroes that meld together to form a diverse team of women, ranging from their mid-30s with children to early 20-somethings who have yet to complete their college degrees. Bringing the team together has been a huge task for the coach, but a fun one she
said. Together, they are able to show our youth another team of women to look up to and see what is truly attainable.
Coach Flory’s goal is to make her team as special as the community around it, and, in return, give the community a team to be proud of. From the looks and sounds of it, both goals will easily be crushed. “You can’t go anywhere without someone greeting you, they’ve been so welcoming,” Flory said in reference to the community, “It’s so positive and just a great vibe.” Sounds like her team digs that sentiment, as well.

Dental Checkup MORE THAN A
ONE DENTIST IS ADDING TOOLS TO THE BEAUTY TOOLBOX IN A UNIQUE WAY
When Dr. Barton Foutz, DDS began his career in dentistry, he never imagined one day it would include offering Botox and cosmetic fillers to enhance the patient experience.
“Patients may come in for a functional need, like a twitch in the neck, a headache, or sore muscles in the jaw and love the cosmetic results also.”
“I’ve been treating the picture (the teeth) for 35 years; now, it’s nice to be able to treat the frame (lips, face, and surrounding musculature)” said Dr. Foutz.
For more than just aesthetics, Botox can effectively treat a variety of ailments: migraines and temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). “Botox gives us another tool in the arsenal to treat that, " said Dr. Foutz.
Dr. Foutz, of Foutz Family Dentistry, has been treating patients cosmetically since 2016. “You can’t divorce the aesthetic from the function,” says Dr. Foutz. “Patients may come in for a functional need, like a twitch in the neck, a headache, or sore muscles in the jaw and love the cosmetic results also.”
It makes sense to put your trust in the care of a licensed and trained professional, especially one who uses tools around the face and mouth daily.
With Dr. Foutz, patients are examined carefully. “I do a physical exam, talk over the patient’s desires and goals. Especially with headaches, to figure out what happens when I press here or there to determine where I put the Botox,” said Dr. Foutz.
Knowing patients’ anatomy helps Dr. Foutz to make recommendations for their treatment plan. Along with the exam, he wants the patients to be comfortable during procedures. By using new, sharp needles for the injection, distraction devices, and even sometimes numbing the area before, he is able to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.
In addition to Botox, he can use dermal fillers that plump up areas that have lost volume from natural aging and PDO threads that can smooth or lift. “They are threads that dissolve to make more of your own collagen. These are good for use in places where you can’t place injections,” said Dr. Foutz.
Whichever service you choose, Dr. Foutz wants you to look and feel your best. He concludes, “If you’re going to have it done, we want you to look as natural and refreshed as possible!”
