WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
Having given up the reins last month to my beautiful wife and publication director, I'm happy to be back in the driver's seat for the Men's edition. Everyone loves their mom, that's who they call when they're sick and who they thank in press conferences when they get drafted to the pros. Hopefully our May Women's edition was well received, but it's time to move on to the guys, the unsung heroes who hopefully provide the foundation for the family.
In my lifetime, I've witnessed an evolution in the definition of a man. In my grandfather's day, the man went to work, mowed the yard and possibly played catch for a few minutes. Maybe grilled on the weekends. Moms ran the household and took care of the kids. Today's men are a lot different, in some ways better and some ways worse. Men have become more of an equal contributor to the household.
More women are working outside the home, whether that's by choice or a necessity due to the cost of living; it's just a part of life in this era. With this shared responsibility for household income comes a shared responsibility for the household. More men are helping out around the house, cooking dinner and running the kids around. We have all become equal contributors in every way and while this is great for the family dynamic, it's possible that men are starting to lose a little bit of their identity. Let's just call it their "manliness." So in this Men's edition, with it being Father's Day month, we're going to talk about some guy stuff.
As always, we have our local pics for the City Scene department and a robust events calendar but on the guy side. We're introducing you to some great business owners and giving you some interesting insight into what they do. We're showing you some classic cars and telling you how to take care of them. We're also going to give you some insight into how to take care of yourself as well as possibly improve your barbecue sauce. Our whole goal for this edition is to just give guys that one month of the year that's all about them. So sit back, grab a beer and we hope you enjoy this Men's edition of Greenwood City Lifestyle.

For a variety of both residential and commercial customers, the Rees Restoration team handles roofing, siding, windows, doors, gutters, insulation, commercial roofing and water or fire mitigation. The family-operated business owned by Johnny Rees since 2014 gets excellent reviews for making projects stress free and handling communications with insurance companies.
Johnny states the company's mission is to offer exceptional products and services at affordable prices. He adds, "We've worked hard to build a reputation as the trusted choice of local customers for a wide range of remodeling services. As a result of our history of dependable service, we've earned an A+ BBB rating and an Angi Super Service Award."
Additionally, the company currently averages 5.0 out of 5-Stars among 770 Google reviews.
"We believe our customers deserve the very best for their homes or businesses, which is why we install top-of-the-line products with experienced crews. At the end of the day, our team wants you to feel pride in the overall beauty and functionality of your property," says Johnny.
Phil Blazek, Rees Restoration general manager, says potential customers may request complimentary project consultations.
He says the 25-member inhouse team is augmented by an army of preferred subcontractors, suppliers and specialists. "During summer months, we may handle and complete up to 14 roofs a day," he adds. "And that's still while focusing on quality of workmanship that's unmatched."
Completing projects briskly while still leaving properties in the utmost clean state is a hallmark of Rees Restoration, verifies Phil. "We remove tons of material off roofs and customers are hard-pressed to find a coffee cup amount of debris. We definitely approach our projects with the goal of minimizing the impact on anyone's sites," he adds.
Phil says focusing on all the little details of projects ensures that the company's customers receive more satisfying overall experiences. He adds that he believes "their customers say it best" through their reviews, which are "a real source of pride."
To maintain a high level of quality, Phil says the company's entire team meets twice monthly and
"For storm, wind and hail issues, we provide a free damage report. And for expert assistance navigating the insurance claims process, the team of Rees Restoration is here to help."
that each week they host a production meeting to discuss trends, needs and any concerns so that issues can be addressed quickly.
Three new services that the Rees Restoration team is offering this year are solar panels for roofs; an official repair division; and a maintenance program priced at $1,000 to cover 10 years. Phil explains that the maintenance program prompts annual inspections to check for factors such as previously undetected problems, needs for roofs to be resealed and whether chimney flashings are still intact.
"The main mission of the maintenance program is to catch issues before they become larger problems," Phill says.
For commercial properties, Phil says the team handles roofs that are both steep or low slope, also called flat roofs, including apartment buildings or multifamily dwellings.
Regarding community support, Phil says the company sponsors school and sports-related groups and teams. "Proceeds from our last golf outing went to funding school supplies for local teachers who ran out of items."
Yet this year, he adds that the Rees Restoration plans to establish a new program to support military veterans by supplying new roofs for their personal homes in need of repairs or replacements.
One designation about which the company's crew is especially appreciative is that they are an Owen's Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor. These types of 'best of the best' contractors must exceed benchmarks craftsmanship, reliability and professionalism standards. "All of us at Rees Restoration are proud to be among the elite 1% of roofers with this designation," states Johnny.

USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.
A good barbecue sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.
SOMETHING SWEET
This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.
SOMETHING TANGY
Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.
SOMETHING SPICY
This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.
SOMETHING LIQUID
It can be beer, water, chicken stock, soda, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.
SOMETHING TOMATO
You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.
THE SPICE COMBINATION
This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.
• 2 cups ketchup
• 1 cup water
• 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
• 5 tablespoons brown sugar
• 5 tablespoons sugar
• 1/2 tablespoon black pepper
• 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
• 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 15 minutes.
Recipe and information courtesy of Pat Neely and Gina Neely.Tech Neck: It's a real, more common physical health challenge that should get attention, verifies Mike Hyde, D.P.T., co-owner of Hayden Physical Therapy in Greenwood. "Don't think you simply have to live with certain kinds of pain. Feeling better is an option, and being pain free may be right around the corner," he encourages.
Tech neck is any form of chronic neck or shoulder pain, soreness or stiffness caused by poor posture and looking down while using electronic devices, such as computers, phones or tablets. Physical therapists, such as Mike, can demonstrate stretching exercises to treat the neck, shoulder and back throughout the day to help alleviate and prevent tech neck. Physical therapists have years of university level training in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology (study of joint movement), neurology and other medical sciences.
HAYDEN PHYSICAL
THERAPY PROFESSIONALS
GUIDE PATIENTS BACK TO PAIN-FREE SOLUTIONS
"Our day-to-day mission is to provide unmatched therapy experiences through compassionate care and therapeutic excellence," says Mike. "We dig to find the root causes of pain so we can keep it away for good, and ensure close personal attention from each member of our team."
As one of Central Indiana’s last privately owned rehabilitation practices, Hayden Physical Therapy was founded during October 2002 by Jamie Hayden, P.T. Longtime employee Mandy Ploetner, P.T.A., also is a current co-owner of the clinic.
Mike says their highly experienced staff at 586 S. State Road 135, Ste. E, uses the most advanced recovery techniques to enrich the overall wellness of patients. The clinic's staffers treat both genders, from walking ages all the way to centenarians.
"We evaluate movement patterns and treat individuals for injuries, musculoskeletal weaknesses, balance issues or neurological challenges with the goal of getting our patients back to their lives' events with pain-free solutions," Mike says.
Treatment for acute or chronic knee and back issues are commonplace each day at the clinic. He says necks, shoulders and backs are so often intertwined, they negatively affect each other until the main cause is addressed.
Other physical reasons that men may benefit from physical therapy span limited range of motion, osteoporosis, elbow or wrist pain, strokes and ligament injuries to sprains, motor vehicle accident rehabilitation, arthritis and joint replacement recoveries. Additionally, research studies indicate patients who participate in pre-hab programs prior to surgeries often have shorter hospital stays, regain function and return to their regular lives faster than those who do not participate in pre-surgical rehabilitation.
The clinic's professionals combine various treatment techniques, including taping; manual or hands-on therapy on soft tissue and joints; deep tissue massage; ultrasounds; balance training; and trigger point therapy.
Mike has worked at Hayden Physical Therapy since he graduated from the University of Indianapolis in 2006, and is co-owner. He's originally from the Southside of Indy and went to Roncalli High School. He and his wife, Jessie, moved to Greenwood in 2009 when we got married. They have two daughters, Molly and Annie, and a son, Bennett. He says he loves being part of the Greenwood community, especially given the schools, work-related ambiance and churches. He shares that his free time revolves around family: "I try to get as much time with our children and my wife as I can. I also enjoy hunting, fishing and golfing on weekends." He says he really appreciates the caring atmosphere at the facility and the opportunity to help people take back their life from pain or recover from an injury. "The relationships I've made through Hayden over the past 18 years, both with co-workers and patients, have impacted my life greatly in positive ways," Mike states.
Mike says they see many 40- to 60-year-old male golf enthusiasts who now are having sore physical effects from the game. "Oftentimes, problems stem from playing golf, or other sports, without stretching beforehand. We can design golf-specific protocols for each person, ones which include core and hip strengthening."
He adds that it's imperative to determine whether someone is hurting due to feeling "tight" or whether they have a confirmed injury.
Mike knows firsthand what that situation seems like. As a high school athlete who played football, basketball and baseball, he says his back became debilitating during his junior year. It turns out he had a stress fracture in his back.
"Dealing with my back pain was my first experience with physical therapy. I didn't know what to expect, but I actually had a good time in PT. It reversed what was happening in my body, and ultimately made me better and able to get back to being active. And, that's what honestly sparked my interest in PT as a career. I've really enjoyed helping others since then," he recalls.
Many people don't realize they have direct access to physical therapy assistance, states Mike, meaning, with certain insurances, they do not need a doctor's referral to PT or a prescription from a primary care physician.
"Patients can make an appointment themselves to get evaluated. Then we develop a treatment program, sometimes over a couple of weeks because everyone's issues and diagnoses are different. Patients are often pleasantly surprised to discover their insurance plans do cover physical therapy," says Mike.
For patients who do not have insurance, Mike says the clinic offers a discounted fee, which can be arranged with the office manager.
Hayden Physical Therapy professionals graduated from accredited physical therapy programs and are state licensed. They host monthly community workshops. The upcoming session will be held regarding shoulder pain treatment on June 25 at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome; attendees are asked to call to register.

ALL-N-1 AUTO DETAIL AND RECONDITIONING PROVIDES BENEFICIAL CHECKLIST AND MAINTENANCE FACTORS
While people apply slightly different definitions when classifying 'classic cars,' in general they're considered antique, vintage and collector vehicles when they're at least 10 to 25 years old. How to preserve and best maintain them becomes a key question. To address those answers, Greenwood City Lifestyle tapped into the expertise of Robin Barkdull, All-N-1 Detail and Reconditioning owner.
"If you own a classic car, you've no doubt made several substantial investments in it and want to keep it in pristine condition," says Robin. "It's very important to only hand-wash these cars. Don't take them through a machine wash. It increases the chances of causing damage."
He asserts Indianapolis has the most classic cars of any city in North America. "A large majority of my customers have some sort of classic, muscle or collector vehicle," he adds.
One industry distinction categorizes cars as: A vintage car is one manufactured between 1919-1930. An antique car was manufactured in 1975 or earlier (older than 45 years old). Classic cars were manufactured in the 1990s or earlier (at least 20 years old).
Robin suggests if owners are driving classic cars occasionally, it's best to have them washed every few weeks. He adds, "If driving them in cold weather, they should be washed promptly to keep road salt and other contaminants from ruining finishes. Hand-washing with a microfiber cloth is the ideal bath for classic cars to protect delicate components and ensure every spot is gotten."
He recommends using a rinseless wash product, such as Opti No Rinse (ONR). He says that's the safest way to clean classic cars because polymers in ONR create a greater barrier between dirt particulates and automotive finishes.
"If your vehicle's dirtier than a light dust from short drives, then use a recommended car wash soap that provides a rich foaming lather to trap dirt and grime. Then rinse to leave a clean surface behind. Avoid using dish soap, as it will breakdown and remove wax," Robin states.
What's the best car storage space? Robin says the ideal scenario is to store cars on a concrete floor in a dry, climate-controlled garage with an air-filtered HVAC system. "If that's not possible, choose a dry space. Avoid parking on dirt or grass because that allows moisture to collect on the vehicle's undercarriage, damaging it," he says.
• Use correct gas.
• Select right oil.
• Examine brakes.
Because classic cars are more likely to develop rust issues, Robin reminds it's very important to take additional steps drying after washing to reduce chances of rust developing.
AllN1Indy.com
• Check fluid levels.
• Pay attention to unusual odors.
• Inspect tires, especially before intending to drive car very far.
• Monitor the battery.
• Stay ahead of rust and corrosion.
If considering a classic car purchase, State Farm Insurance offers this inspection checklist:
• Clear title: Check if car is registered to seller, or not registered at all. Fees/penalties add up if new owners need to research and apply for new title.
• VIN: Make sure Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on title matches official VIN tag on car. If they don't match, it's possible the vehicle may've been in a serious accident, the title is counterfeit or the vehicle was stolen.
• Interior: Original is best. Check if seats, upholstery, badges, radio, dashboard and emblems are damaged, or not factory original. Finding/replacing these elements can become costly.
• Exterior: Try to examine the car in natural daylight. Look for paint condition, obvious dents and misaligned/mismatched panels.
• Rust damage: A little can be expected, but if complete sections of floorboards or body panels are rusted or show signs of repair/replacement, be cautious.
• Test drive: If car is running, safe and legal to drive, take it for a spin. Listen for noises, squeaks and clunks. If it feels loose going around corners or over bumps, there may be costly suspension problems.
Robin’s recommendations for anyone thinking about investing in a classic car is to first decide on the auto’s purpose. Then, attend some classic car shows and get involved with a classic car club. He adds, “Make a list of questions for the seller. After a test drive, get a professional inspection. Then find a mechanic and detailer for ongoing maintenance. Last, explore insurance options.”

Use the same commands and gestures. If you use “sit” as the command for sitting, stick to it rather than switching to “sit down.” A traditional “down” requests the dog to lie with its belly on the ground. Many times, people, will say “down” when a dog jumps on them or when they wish for a dog to get off a couch.
Consistency extends to your reactions. Whether offering praise or redirecting unwanted behavior, consistency in your responses helps your dog understand. If you don’t want your dog to jump on grandma when she comes over don’t encourage them to jump on you when you get home.
Consistency builds trust between you and your dog. When your pet knows what to expect from you, they feel more secure and confident.
