Hi Greenwich Community,
Each May, we look forward to creating one of our most meaningful issues of the year, our Women’s Issue. It’s a celebration of the women who power our neighborhoods, inspire through their work, lead with heart, and uplift others every single day. Whether they’re running businesses, raising families, giving back, or creating space for joy and wellness, the women of Greenwich make a remarkable impact in every corner of our community.
In this special edition, we’re shining a well-deserved spotlight on just a few of those women. You’ll meet Dorothy from That Greenwich Life, whose presence online and off blends authenticity and style in a way that resonates with so many. We had the pleasure of connecting with Stacey Higdon, the outgoing president of the Junior League of Greenwich, whose leadership and service have left a lasting mark on the organization and the community it serves. We also connected with Jennifer Openshaw, the powerhouse and CEO behind one of our favorite non-profits, Girls With Impact.
We’re proud to feature the founders of Minor History, creating timeless leather essentials with purpose and intentionality. And for those who believe wellness can be both creative and fun, you’ll love the story of two Greenwich Junior League members whose love for needlepoint sparked a business and a bond that’s redefining what self-care looks like.
These are just a few of the women changing the face of entrepreneurship, community engagement, and connection here in Greenwich. Their journeys are a reminder of how powerful it is when women support women, dream big, and build something lasting.
We hope this issue leaves you not only inspired, but energized to celebrate the women in your own life. This community is full of smart, strong, visionary women, and it’s a privilege to share their stories in our pages.
With admiration and gratitude,
May 2025

CELEBRATING GREENWICH’S MOST INSPIRING CHANGE-MAKERS
In celebration of our annual Women’s Issue, we’re honored to spotlight a group of inspiring ladies who are shaping our community through creativity, leadership, and connection. From business owners and innovators, to digital creators and community builders, these women are leaving a meaningful mark on Greenwich and beyond.
Penny Goffman is an innovative entrepreneur, speaker, stylist, writer, and devoted mama, known for her ability to connect and empower women. In her recent role as Head of Community at HeyMama, she supported working mothers by fostering relationships across the country through engaging events and curated connections, enabling them to grow both their networks and net worth.
Always take the meeting. You never know who knows who and where a meeting may lead you. It could be that month, that year or even long term down the road. That one singular meeting is a kickoff to a new relationship that can grow & connect you in ways you never imagined.
Flexibility & Creativity. I'm a Type A, extremely efficient and organized personality but when it comes to challenges it's pivotal to embrace the issue at hand, and be nimble. The worst thing you could do is spend time and energy on what ifs, what if I did that differently.

The show must go on, and a forward thinking, creative attitude is critical. With the cards that are dealt, how can you make the best hand? What creative approaches can you map out to overcome and even thrive. This requires flexibility and pivots. The less red tape, the better!
Movement, period, end of story. I have consistently worked out at least 4 days/ week since I was 22 years old, now 45. There is nothing that gets in the way, not travel, no children, not my mood and certainly no excuses. I'm pretty cut throat about it. We're adults. You want to feel good, move your body baby. Don't take my word for it, the science behind movement is endless impacting every single aspect of our lives including focus and energy which are critical to entrepreneurial life.
My HUSBAND, hands down. My rock. My lover. My cheerleader. My mentor. My therapist. My best friend. My financier. My sounding board. The one who makes it all happen with and for me. I've had some crazy ideas, like being 5'2 and driving a 24 ft bus for my exited business Jolie Gotique with zero prior experience, and he never even flinched. Lots of talk about women not needing men, hear me roar type of mentality. Sure, I can roar but I need him and I'm perfectly proud to admit that.
My advice is twofold: Firstly, lead in the way you wish to be led. If you respond
well to praise, feedback, reviews, thoughtful notes, thank yous, gifting, downtime, structure, team bonding - then ensure you are feeding your team these elements. Secondly, take a mirror to yourself. We all have strengths and weaknesses. We are put in that position for our strengths, but if we don't acknowledge our weaknesses the overall team or community will suffer. Leaders need growth, learning opportunities, mentorship and camaraderie with other leaders to thrive, develop and motivate their communities. A leader is only as strong as the team they lead - be the source of energy and inspiration.
Stacey Higdon is the President of the Junior League of Greenwich and has been a dedicated leader within the organization for 11 years. In addition she is on the Board of directors for the Greenwich skating club where she co-chairs the figure skating program. She holds a Master’s in Communications and a Bachelor of Commerce degree. With a diverse background spanning 12 years as a Brand Manager in the consumer packaged goods industry and five years as a television reporter, anchor, and producer, Stacey brings a wealth of experience in leadership, media, and strategic brand management.
Never stop learning. Identify one aspect of your job that excites you the most, then dive deeper—research, take courses, and become the workplace expert in that area.
The Junior League is filled with intelligent, accomplished women, and I really believe two minds are better than one - when I hit a challenge I turn to these incredible women to overcome the challenge as a team.
Leading an organization means tasks can pile up fast. To stay ahead, I make sure to do at least one thing every day—even on weekends and holidays. Sometimes, it’s as simple as spending 5–10 minutes sending an email to keep a project moving. I also tackle small tasks and respond to emails right away whenever possible, otherwise your inbox can become overwhelming!
WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST SUPPORTER?
My biggest cheerleaders are my family, especially my husband and three kids. My 13-year-old and 10-year-old twins are always excited about my work with the Junior League and other organizations. They’ve even helped out many times, which is especially meaningful to me—I want them to understand the value of service and the impact of giving back.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ASPIRING LEADERS?
Share your Vision, and the why! Then leading by example is key—you have to be willing to do the work alongside those you lead. It builds trust and reassures them that they’re not in it alone. Personally, I’m always more willing to follow someone when I know they’re in it with me!

Sonia has been deeply involved in philanthropy, supporting causes such as Greenwich Hospital’s Gala, the Old Bags Luncheon, Mothers for Others, the YWCA, Red Cross, and Save the Children. In New York City, she contributed to the Lincoln Center Junior Board, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Temple Emanu-El, while also supporting Greenwich public and private schools during her children’s time there.
A former model, Miss Puerto Rico Universe, and trained ballet dancer, Sonia’s career took her globally. She founded Son-Ya, a design brand sold in top boutiques, and served as Head Designer for Barney’s New York private label, managing high-fashion boutiques across the Tri-State area.
My top career lesson is that success is built on resilience and self-trust, not just talent and intelligence. It’s about learning from failures, adapting, and moving forward with determination while keeping ego in check. Balancing passion and humility is key to long-term growth, both professionally and personally.
I remind myself that every challenge is an opportunity for growth, allowing me to embrace it fully. I am truly blessed to be surrounded by a remarkable group of women, near and far, who are not only
brilliant, loving, and successful but also my unwavering support system. Their strength and encouragement help me stay focused on the bigger picture and break problems down into manageable steps. I am deeply grateful for their unconditional love and support in all I do.
One habit that helps me maintain balance and productivity is setting clear priorities and boundaries. I plan my days carefully, ensuring I make time for work, volunteering, and family… although not always in that order. I also make sure to carve out time for friends and self-care, always finding happiness in everything I do.
My children inspire me every day to be the best version of myself. Their belief in me, their love, and even their challenges push me to grow and lead by example.
My late husband was my/our biggest supporter, and his wisdom, humor, and life experiences continue to guide us… we remind each other of him daily. Lat but not least My girlfriends, who are like family, through thick and thin!
TELL US YOUR FAVORITE INSPIRATIONAL WORDS TO LIVE BY:
My father’s last words before he lost his ability to speak were: “Always be humble and appreciative.” Those words stayed with me/my family, and their meaning has only
deepened over time. True success is found in the legacy we create… through the love we nurture in family, the values we uphold in business, and the lives we uplift through generosity.
From my father, I learned to lead with integrity and empathy. True leadership isn’t about power… it’s about inspiring and empowering others, listening, and making decisions that benefit the greater good. His quiet philanthropy as a doctor in Mexico and Puerto Rico showed me that kindness, humility, and action create lasting impact not only on who you help but on those around you too!

Jennifer Openshaw is a nationally known financial leader, author, and CEO of Girls With Impact, the nation’s leading online Business Leadership training for young women. Her expertise and national reputation as a financial innovator have made her a valuable ally in the media — from “Oprah,” “ Dr. Phil” and “Today” to CNN, Fox and CNBC.
Jennifer personally understands the challenges of many Americans. At the age of 7, she cared for her younger brothers as her mother worked two full-time jobs as a waitress to make ends meet. At the age of 14, Jennifer took on her first job as a maid in a motel and later held multiple jobs to put herself through college.
In 2000, Jennifer was named one of the Internet’s 25 Rising Stars as a result of her work as CEO and founder of Women’s Financial Network, a company created as a result of her experience in the industry and as the “Money Expert” for KCBS-TV in Los Angeles. The company was acquired by Wall Street legend Muriel Siebert (NYSE: SIEB).

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ASPIRING LEADERS?
Move outside your comfort zone. Try new and tough things to build your confidence and skills.
ECAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO PURSUE YOUR CAREER PATH?
I began dancing in Greenwich under the direction of Felicity Foote at the Greenwich Ballet Workshop. After growing up in her studio and traveling to Germany for more than nine summers with her performing company to dance for good causes, I could not see a life without dance.
My mother began researching dance majors and I chose UMass Five College Dance Program. My post graduate years were spent in NYC and Germany before returning to Greenwich and dedicating my time to teaching. I have been going ever since with an incredible team of dedicated and talented teachers that makes every year unique and its own journey.
WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE LESSON YOU'VE LEARNED THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER AND PERSONAL LIFE?
I've come to realize that the way I’ve built my business and life is exactly how it’s meant to be. It’s not about comparison—my studio and my journey are uniquely mine, designed to serve me and my community in the best way possible.
Melissa Truelove, owner of The Dance Pointe, fosters a community where dancers can take risks without fear

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH NEXT?
At the 20-year mark, which is only four years away, I would like to pursue a degree in dance kinesiology.
HOW DO YOU EMPOWER YOUR STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY WOMEN AND GIRLS, TO BUILD CONFIDENCE AND LEADERSHIP THROUGH DANCE?
Our studio is more than just a place to train – it’s a safe space where dancers can take risks, both physically and artistically, without fear. Through discipline and dedication, we instill skills that extend far beyond the studio. As our dancers hone their craft, they naturally develop punctuality, preparedness, confidence, and openness to new ideas and experiences – qualities that serve them in all areas of life. Performing for diverse audiences and supporting meaningful causes, both locally and abroad, teaches our dancers that dance is more than movement – it’s a powerful tool for connection, impact, and leadership. They leave our program not only as stronger artists but as empowered individuals ready to take on the world.
FAST FIVE
1. What is your top career lesson? Surround yourself/hire the most honest and talented people.
2. How do you overcome challenges? I have learned to PAUSE, clarify my purpose and the solution evolves from there.
3. What’s one habit or routine that helps you maintain balance and productivity? Discipline & 5am. PERIOD.
4. Who is your biggest supporter? My husband.
5. Favorite...TV show, book, podcast (pick one!) Book: A Gentleman in Moscow.

Dorothy Cascerceri Simone dishes on staying grounded and grateful
From the moment I first held a microphone as a child, I was hooked on performing. While I couldn't sing or dance, I could talk! Growing up without siblings, my imagination became my best companion, and my stuffed animals were my audience. I've always been, and will always be, a storyteller. Though I loved being in the spotlight, I also spent hours alone in my bedroom reading, writing books, plays, radio shows, and even creating my own magazine.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT?
My biggest challenge was losing my son at 21 weeks into my pregnancy, with my other son only three years old. What followed was a torturous four-year journey of unexplained infertility, failed IVF, and even more traumatic pregnancy losses. The emotional pile-on left me deeply depressed, eventually leading to a PTSD diagnosis.
This dark period pushed me into a journey of healing and soul-searching—breaking cycles of generational trauma and shedding parts of myself and relationships that no longer served me. Ultimately, I got pregnant with my daughter. Before I could birth her, I had to "birth" a new version of myself. That transformation was always the first step on my path, even if I didn't realize it at the time.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE PERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL LIFE?
My work and home life are rarely in perfect balance, and accepting that has been life-changing. Some weeks are busier than others, and understanding that it’s only temporary helps me ride the wave. My kids always come first, and one thing I've become really good at is saying "no" in my career. Knowing my worth and remembering that every “yes” means more time away from my kids helps me limit what I take on. It also weeds out opportunities that don’t align with my brand, my goals, or who I truly am.

The Perfect Morning (Or Anytime)
Protein-Packed Bite!
These egg bites are a perfect homemade spring brunch creation – they’re just so pretty, tasty, presentable and easy – plus they can be made in advance! But they’re also simple enough for an everyday breakfast, especially when used as meal prep to make mornings easier. These veggie egg bites offer quick protein and can be part of a balanced breakfast, especially when paired with whole grain toast topped with cottage cheese, chopped tomatoes, drizzled olive oil and some fruit. An easy, delicious, protein-filled quick breakfast with minimal cleanup that morning? I’m in!
INGREDIENTS:
• 12 large eggs
• 6 oz spinach (about 4 C)
• 1 bell pepper
• 1 C whole milk cottage cheese
• ¾ C feta cheese, crumbled
• ¼ tsp salt
• ¼ tsp ground black pepper
• Nonstick cooking spray
DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Line a 12-muffin tin and a 6-muffin tin with cupcake liners. Spray each liner with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
3. Chop spinach and dice bell pepper. Set aside.
4. Crack eggs into a large mixing bowl and whisk together until the yolks and the whites are mixed well. Add salt, pepper and cottage cheese and whisk again until combined.
5. Add chopped spinach, diced bell pepper and feta cheese to the egg mixture. Mix with a large spoon.
6. Use a large spoon to transfer the egg mixture to the muffin tins, filling each muffin tin just below the brim.
7. Bake in oven for about 25-30 minutes or until cooked through. A toothpick inserted should come out clean and egg bites should reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Once cooked, remove from oven and allow egg bites to cool for about 5-10 minutes before enjoying.
Note: These egg muffins can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-5 days and warmed in the microwave for about 1 minute when ready to eat. Alternatively, freeze and thaw overnight in the fridge or thaw in the microwave from frozen when ready to eat. Microwave time may vary and frozen egg bites will take longer to defrost and get to desired temperature. Reheated eggs should reach a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

A well-crafted bag or leather good is more than just an accessory—it’s a work of art. That’s precisely what Minor History has mastered with its minimalist, sustainable designs. We sat down with the team to uncover the inspiration, craftsmanship, and philosophy behind the brand.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START MINOR HISTORY, AND HOW DID THE CONCEPT COME TO LIFE?
The inspiration behind Minor History came from a seemingly simple moment: Hillary Ortiz, now Minor History’s Head of Community & Brand Partnerships, bought a designer handbag for her birthday, and when she showed it to her husband- who has
LUXURY
CRAFTED WITH SIMPLICITY, SUSTAINABILITY, AND STYLE
“WE DESIGN WITH ALL OF LIFE’S ‘MINOR’ MOMENTS IN MIND, KNOWING THAT, IN THE END, THOSE MOMENTS ARE WHAT TRULY SHAPE YOUR HISTORY.”
an extensive background in manufacturing and design - he immediately started analyzing the design. He pointed out the stitching and suggested ways it could be done better. Eventually he took the bag and ripped it apart exposing the layers of nylon and plastic that lined the bag. That moment sparked a realization for them. They were frustrated by the fashion industry's tendency to offer overpriced, low-quality products that often sacrificed both the customer’s experience and the environment.
In 2015, Minor History was born by co-founders Dave Ortiz, and Topher O'Rourke. The mission has always been clear: to offer superior craftsmanship, sustainable practices, and timeless designs. Today, what truly sets us apart is our commitment to quality, which continues to guide everything we create. We believe in thoughtful design that stands the test of time, offering pieces that not only last but are cherished for years to come.
The name Minor History reflects both our aesthetic- serious yet playful- and our philosophy. We design with all of life’s ‘minor’ moments in mind, knowing that, in the end, those moments are what truly shape your history.
Every piece is intentionally crafted to be part of your everyday story, seamlessly fitting into your daily travels, nights out, and everything in between. We’ve always believed that the bags you carry should move with you through all of life’s chapters- both big and small- becoming a part of your personal history.
Your leather should last a lifetime. This is why we started Minor History: to create better quality leather pieces worth your time, that stand the test of time. We believe that quality products with sustainable practices, and fair prices can live in harmony. Our goal is to reveal a higher standard of products by arming you with honest products you always reach for that keep up with your life for life.
Our standards: 100% real, full grain leather, solid brass hardware, no plastic fillers.
“We’ve all carried the Afterparty Clutch through both the minor and major momentsfirst dates, girls’ nights out, best friends’ weddings and special trips. It’s become a part of our lives, which is exactly what we hoped for when we designed it.” -Madeline
Fitzgerald, Merchandising Lead
We create modern accessible heirlooms. We want our customer to know this is the bag they can use day after day and still pass down to a loved one in the future. We transform durable leather into every part of your routine, from your morning coffee run, to your commute, to your dream vacation. Visually, we are creating an aspirational lifestyle, but functionally are still very much grounded in our customer’s reality- from practical design to pricing. Our customer has a timeless style. Every design starts with her day in mind. She prefers to invest in forever pieces over fast-fashion for quality and ethical considerations. We build our collection around her day, her lifestyle, and her ambition.
“I’ve been lucky to have a community of strong women shape me- through both the major moments and the everyday minor ones. From childhood to now, I’ve been surrounded by women who lead with vision, style, and purpose. Their resilience, creativity, and confidence have always been my main source of inspiration and guidance both in my personal and professional life.
When creating products for Minor History, I have them in mind. I think about what they would need- what would complement their lifestyles, their ambitions, and their voices. Our products are a reflection of them: effortlessly adaptable, bold yet understated, and better with age!” - Emily Hayward, President, Brand Strategy & Operations
Our design approach always starts with the material itself. We let the leather take center stage, keeping panels as large and uninterrupted as possible to preserve its natural beauty and durability. By avoiding liners and fillers, our designs remain just as refined on the inside as they are on the outside, ensuring every detail is built for lasting quality.
Our creative process is rooted in longevity and intentionality. We don’t design just to keep up with trends or launch product- we create with purpose, filling the real gaps in our customer’s lives with pieces that will stand the test of time.
Before releasing any design, we put it to the test in our own lives, making sure it seamlessly moves through both the minor and major moments. The Getaway Duffle is a perfect example - created out of a real need for a versatile, timeless travel companion, this duffle came on all our trips for a full year before we were ready to finalize the design.
“Real life product testing is one of the most important parts of the creative process that we never skip. The first week long trip that I brought the initial prototype of The Getaway Duffle on, I was quite literally sending the team messages daily with ideas and revisions for how to improve the bag.”Emily Hayward, President, Brand Strategy & Operations
Ultimately, our creative process is about designing with purpose, refining with intention, and ensuring that every piece we create becomes a lasting part of our customers’ lives.

How Two Best Friends Are Reinventing Needlepoint with Community, Creativity, and Connection
Pointina, a Connecticut and New York City-based company, was founded by best friends Elizabeth Buffone and Meredith Flenzini Evans, who met in the Junior League and bonded over their shared passion for creativity. "We started talking about needlepoint and realized how much we both enjoyed it. From there, the idea of Pointina was born," Elizabeth explained. Their mission is to create a modern, welcoming space where people can learn needlepoint, build connections, and find joy in a mindful, hands-on craft.
Meredith, an architect, and lifelong needlepointer, learned the craft from her mother and grandmother. "I’ve done it on and off throughout my life,” she shared. Elizabeth also grew up around needlepoint but didn’t fully embrace it until the rise of the grandmillennial aesthetic. "I always saw my mom needlepointing, but there weren’t really any canvases that spoke to me. Now, with the opportunity to create our own canvases, I finally feel inspired to stitch," she said. With Elizabeth working full-time in social media and as a content creator, they naturally started building a community through the videos they posted about needlepoint. "We started posting some videos of our projects, and people were really interested in learning how to do it," Elizabeth noted. This momentum led to the creation of Pointina, a brand that makes needlepoint more accessible through curated workshops and a vibrant online community. The goal? To make needlepoint a rewarding, social, and creatively fulfilling experience.
Every month, Pointina hosts a free Sip & Stitch event, bringing members together to connect, unwind, and stitch in a welcoming setting. They also partner with brands like the Junior League and Pure Barre to host beginner-friendly workshops, each featuring a custom, hand-painted canvas designed to resonate with the brand’s community.
Workshops include a kit with high-quality supplies: a custom canvas, curated threads, and all necessary tools. Participants are guided through foundational stitches and leave with the confidence and inspiration to continue at home, working toward a handmade, heirloom-quality piece.
Beyond learning a new skill, Pointina workshops foster connection. "There’s something special about sitting down with others, working on a project, and sharing stories," Meredith explained. "Needlepoint can be a solitary craft, but we’re transforming it into a social experience."
Wellness is a key pillar of Pointina. Elizabeth, a trained meditation teacher and Reiki healer, incorporates meditation into each workshop. “We’ve found that starting with meditation helps people feel more present and engaged in the creative process,” she said. The repetitive nature of stitching is inherently meditative, reducing
stress and promoting focus. Research shows that crafting activities like needlepoint can lower cortisol levels by up to 50% and enhance overall well-being. By blending mindfulness with creativity, Pointina offers a space for relaxation, connection, and artistic expression.
Workshops are designed to be enjoyable and accessible, ensuring participants leave feeling encouraged rather than overwhelmed. "We want people to feel proud of their progress, even if they don’t finish their piece in one sitting," Meredith said. Each kit includes a stitch guide with diagrams and QR codes linking to video tutorials for continued learning at home.
What sets Pointina apart is its focus on community, creativity, and modern accessibility. Meredith and Elizabeth are dedicated to making needlepoint more inclusive while honoring the craft’s rich history and artistry. The brand’s strong online presence, particularly on Instagram (@pointinastitchclub), has played a key role in building an engaged following. As they continue to grow, the founders envision expanding their offerings, hosting larger events, and deepening their impact within the creative community.
"It’s incredibly rewarding to see people come to our workshops, have fun, and leave with a project they’re excited to continue," Elizabeth said. "We’re just getting started, and we can’t wait to see where this journey takes us."
