Merriam-Webster defines “style” as a particular manner or technique by which something is done, created or performed. It also describes it as a distinctive manner of expression, a particular mode of living. Whether we recognize it or not, we all have a style—a way of showing up in the world that is unique only to us. I kind of love that.
It’s been fun curating an edition where style takes many forms. We decided to team up with businesses who deeply understand the importance this plays in someone’s life; think “life-style”… we’re all about that here! From custom jewelry and stunning landscaping to magazine worthy interior design and fine auto detailing, we’re passionate about helping you live your best Frederick life-style. We hope these local experts inspire you with ways you can level up your game.
Do you know what I find most stylish about this community? Remember, style is a “particular manner by which something is done.” Word is spreading that Frederick is special. We don’t end up on “best places to live” lists for no reason. In both my observation and experience, it’s this: we take care of one another. Giving back is so engrained into Frederick’s style, you can’t go very far without seeing how that plays out in the business community, the expansive non-profit space, the list goes on. It’s next level. And I’m so proud to call this beautiful place home.
I couldn’t help but take a moment to highlight Frederick’s most stylish night of 2024. Were you downtown on June 5th when hundreds of women roamed the streets as Holly Go Lightly? I still can’t get over it! It was a fabulous evening and all for a good cause—big shoutout to Colonial Jewelers for not only hosting an unforgettable Breakfast at Tiffany’s experience but the opportunity to be a judge. What fun! (Cheesing above with my sister Stephanie and friend Katie).

Wendy Flynn, co-owner of Dream House Furniture & Design in Downtown Frederick, shares her passion for creating beautiful, functional spaces that reflect unique styles and needs.
Here are some of Wendy's top tips for infusing your personal flair into your living spaces.
Choosing the right wall color can set the tone and foundation to build upon.
• Neutrals will always stand the test of time. They provide a versatile base that you can easily update with accents. Be careful of saturated colors. Colors with a slight bit of brown are more soothing for a wall.
• Colors may vary depending on the angle of light. All companies have a stick-able sample of your desired color. Before painting, see how the light moves around the room during different times of the day.
• Wallpaper is an excellent way to introduce color and pattern into small spaces, adding interest and making a bold statement.
The way furniture is arranged in a room can dramatically affect its functionality and aesthetics.
• Ensure furniture, rugs, lighting, and accessories are the right scale for your space.
• The bigger the rug, the more open the space. Large rugs create a sense of expansiveness.
• Have a focal point in every room. Whether it’s an art piece, a beautiful tall cabinet, mirror or a bed, a focal point anchors the room.
• Placing tall furniture in small spaces creates the illusion of a larger room.
• Think about how you move around a room. Clear pathways can improve the flow and usability of the space.
Art can be the soul of a room, adding character and emotion to a space. It has the power to represent who you are as a person or a family–your passions, joys, life experiences and what makes you come alive. When placing artwork, consider the following:
• When hanging a series of pieces, try not to space works more than a few inches apart. Close spacing creates a cohesive and intentional look.
• Always hang art at eye-level to ensure that your art is easily visible and enjoyed.
• Large-scale art makes a more significant impact than smaller pieces unless you’re creating a gallery wall. DreamHouseStyle.com

Colonial Jewelers is a fourth-generation family business known for their expertise in the industry and cutting edge custom jewelry. We sat down with the dynamic duo, Sarah Hurwitz Robey, President, and Chris Robey, Jewelry Designer, to hear what they had to say about their family’s legacy and the craftsmanship that brings custom jewelry vision to life.
HOW DOES COLONIAL JEWELERS HONOR ITS LEGACY WHILE CONTINUING TO SERVE ITS CUSTOMERS TODAY?
“Custom by Colonial… Quality jewelry, crafted with Love”
Sarah: We are so lucky to be in a business that appreciates the past generations for all they have done to get us here. CONTINUED >
Our business has always been centered around helping people celebrate their love, and we continue that mission every day. Diamonds, gemstones and precious metals are timeless and will always have value.
WHAT SIGNIFICANT CHANGES OR MILESTONES STAND OUT? WHAT HAS STAYED THE SAME?
Sarah: Some of our significant milestones include my grandparents, the Hurwitz family, relocating Colonial Jewelers to Frederick in 1948. My parents joined the company in 1978 and moved to our current location at 1 South Market Street 20 years later in 1998. In 2021, we underwent a full store remodel and expanded our jeweler’s workshop by adding new equipment. In 2023, we celebrated our 75th anniversary in Frederick and I transitioned into the role of President of Colonial Jewelers. Chris joining us as our Custom Designer strengthened our already robust custom department.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN CUSTOM JEWELRY DESIGN?
Chris: Before doing jewelry design and CAD (Computer Aided Design) production, I started as a bench jeweler 13 years ago at Colonial. I remember going to a jewelry show in New York around that time and seeing the most incredible jewelry pieces. After asking the designers how they created such remarkable pieces, we learned they were using CAD. It was at that moment we realized this was the future of jewelry and the next step for Colonial.
Sarah: Colonial Jewelers stands behind the quality and the highest level of craftsmanship, which extends to our custom jewelry. We are well versed in a variety of styles and techniques to be able to provide a huge variety to our clients.
Chris: Custom by Colonial pieces stand out because they are unique to each individual. My time at the jewelers bench has given me an understanding of what’s required to build structurally sound jewelry. Each piece is crafted to match the customer’s aesthetic and diamond or gemstone selection, which can be sourced from Colonial or provided by the customer. Our goldsmith excels in setting diamonds and gemstones and refining
jewelry, seamlessly bridging the gap between digital creation and traditional jewelry-making techniques.
CAN YOU WALK US THROUGH THE PROCESS OF CREATING A CUSTOM PIECE, FROM THE INITIAL CONSULTATION TO THE FINAL PRODUCT?
Sarah: The process of creating a custom piece begins with an initial consultation in our showroom. Some customers arrive with a clear idea for a custom piece, while others decide on customization as they discuss and visualize their ideas with us. We showcase a wide variety of styles and designs to inspire and guide our customers. Our skilled sales associates excel at understanding and articulating the customer’s vision. They gather essential details such as preferred style, intended use and other considerations to shape the design process.
Chris: Once I receive this information, I translate it into a detailed 3D CAD design. The process of creating a custom piece varies for each individual. Some customers entrust us with total creative freedom, while others have specific ideas in mind. In every case, I create a 3D model to ensure the gemstones fit perfectly. This model is then presented to the customer, providing an accurate depiction of the jewelry piece, including the arrangement of diamonds and gemstones. Upon approval, the piece is cast in the chosen precious metal and meticulously finished by our master jeweler.
Sarah: We aim for our clients to enjoy a fun, relaxing and professional experience during their visits to our store. With our well-trained sales team, we always strive for complete customer satisfaction. With over 75 years in Frederick, clients can trust that they are receiving a beautifully crafted custom design from a reputable company that will continue to serve for many years to come.
Chris: I hope the custom experience at Colonial leaves our customers with a unique piece of jewelry they can proudly own and wear, confident it will endure over time. It’s rewarding that customers can actively participate in the creative process, ensuring their jewelry is truly one-of-a-kind.
“Embracing current trends while preserving the craftsmanship and quality that define traditional jewelry.”
Sarah: Our vision for Colonial Jewelers is to honor our family tradition in Frederick by remaining true to our core values. We strive to be a beloved shopping destination and a rewarding workplace. Innovation is key as we aim to offer the best in jewelry and service to the Frederick community.
Chris: With such a deep history in the jewelry industry, it’s important to me to stay on the forefront by embracing current trends while preserving the craftsmanship and quality that define traditional jewelry.
Colonial Jewelers stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of family, tradition, and excellence in craftsmanship. Whether it’s the precision of modern CAD design or the timeless skill of traditional jewelry-making, Colonial Jewelers combines the best of both worlds to create stunning, personalized pieces. THREE “KEYS” LEADERS SHARE ABOUT THEIR LOVE FOR BASEBALL AND FREDERICK
ARTICLE BY KRISTEN WOJDAN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER ROSARIA FILM & PHOTOGRAPHY
We had the privilege of speaking with three of the top leaders in the Frederick Keys organization and got to know a little more about their background and their love for baseball. You can’t go wrong with leaders who are passionate about baseball, Frederick and serving others. FrederickKeys.com
greg baroni CEO and Managing Partner Attain Sports
I originally hail from California and made my way to the East Coast early in my career, more than 40 years ago...I had no real intention of leaving the West Coast…Long story short, I met my lovely bride—my wife Camille—while living in Washington, DC, and the DC Metro Region has been my home ever since!
After nearly 20 years at KPMG Consulting…[and] seven years at Unisys, in 2009, along with another colleague, I founded Attain, LLC. Over the course of 15 years, I have collaborated with my partners to grow the firm and ultimately created two additional companies. Today, Attain Enterprises includes three unique companies: Attain Capital, Attain Sports and Attain Partners... Through Attain Sports, I have had the incredible privilege of becoming the owner of the Frederick Keys and getting to know and love this wonderful city.
I have a strong passion for building culture/community, driving innovation and solving complex problems. At my core, I am driven to help improve humankind…cultural impact is a significant motivator for me. This translates directly to America’s pastime, baseball, where a healthy team dynamic and commitment to respect and discipline are essential for success on the field. I find true fulfillment in seeing our team members grow and succeed.
WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO GO WHEN YOU’RE IN FREDERICK? ANY FAVORITE RESTAURANTS, SHOPS, LOCATIONS?
Well, you can’t miss a stop at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium! But, beyond that, Visit Frederick is a tremendous resource for all things local, including the museums that share the city’s rich heritage, like the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.
I have had the incredible privilege of becoming the owner of the Frederick Keys and getting to know and love this wonderful city.
HOW DID YOU END UP IN FREDERICK?
I am originally from New York City. After a stint in Arkansas I was looking to get back into baseball and came across the Frederick Keys GM job opening. After one trip up to Frederick, I knew that it was a wonderful community to raise a family and was excited by the ownership group’s vision for the team.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE AS GM OF THE FREDERICK KEYS?
What I love most is the ability to make an impact on the community and provide a great family atmosphere at our games. There is nothing that I like more than to hear our fans talk about how they would come out to Frederick Keys games with their mom or dad when they were growing up and how much of an impact it had on them.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT FREDERICK?
I can’t say enough about the community and how welcoming everyone has been. I have talked to countless people who moved here within the last 10 years and they have all told me “I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.” My favorite part about Frederick has to be the historic charm and the wonderful community of people who have made my transition so easy.

Manager Frederick Keys
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I’m originally from San Diego. This is my second year with the Frederick Keys. Last year I was a hitting coach and this year I’m the Manager for the team.
WHAT IS YOUR BASEBALL BACKGROUND?
I first got into baseball when I was five years old—my uncle got me into it. I played little league up until high school. I attended San Diego HS and leveraged that into a scholarship at Southern Cal...I played in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and we won a Bronze medal. We were the last Olympic college team…I got drafted in the second round in 1996, and I signed professionally with the Minnesota Twins...played for several MLB teams over about 10 years, including: Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers and Florida Marlins.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BASEBALL?
It’s a game within a game…trying to figure out what the pitcher is doing and the pitcher is trying to figure out what I am doing. Then you have your teammates…especially when I was in Minnesota, it was like a brotherhood. I have several life-long friends from that time.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT FREDERICK?
Frederick is slower than other places, which I love! I love the calmness and peacefulness. I love to play golf at Musket Ridge. I enjoy my time here when I’m here!
I love the calmness and peacefulness [of Frederick].
Hawkins Landscaping Founder David Hawkins, Jr. Celebrates 50 Years in Business
ARTICLE BY EMILY HOLLAND
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS MARTIN OF CONVOY CREATIVES
The most striking thing in speaking to David Hawkins, Jr. about his landscaping business is how many lives he’s managed to touch. Hawkins Landscaping is not just a business, but a contributor to community, for its employees, the Hawkins family, and the Frederick clients and organizations it serves. It’s amazing to survey the stability and impact that Hawkins, Jr. has developed over 50 years of business, but what’s even more interesting is that there are no magic bullets. There’s no mysterious secret to his success. Instead, he has done things the old-fashioned way: staying unswervingly committed to the things that are simple, but not easy. Serving customers well, caring for employees, growing sustainably, and refusing to take shortcuts. He began the business in 1974 with $100 and a pickup truck, and today oversees an organization with approximately 25 employees and 18 landscaping vehicles. He didn’t get there by accident, and he didn’t get there by rushing the process or giving up.
Hawkins Landscaping stands out because of Hawkins, Jr.’s unusual level of commitment to five key priority areas. They’re not an “official” business slate, but they naturally emerge as he speaks about what he’s created over the past 50 years. Anyone can aspire to achievement in these metrics, but it’s Hawkins, Jr.’s consistency and dedication which have brought him tangible results. The effect of all these priorities working together provides an inspiring example for the Frederick community and for local entrepreneurs.
CONTINUED >
Hawkins, Jr. says his first commitment in serving clients is always to honor his word and to provide a fair price for quality work. “Honoring his word,” at the most basic level, takes the form of a dedication to timeliness. “I can’t stand when people are late,” he says. He knows that landscaping companies often operate on the basis of arrival during a “window” of time, but he makes a concerted effort to run his company so that his employees show up when he tells the client they’ll be there. “That’s just the first thing,” he says. He’s committed to offering clients a price based on a realistic assessment of labor time completed with materials of a standard they will truly appreciate—he doesn’t undercut or overshoot. “I always want people to know exactly what they’re getting, what the cost will really be, and that they’ll be happy with the outcome.”
Hawkins, Jr. also tries to respond to the needs of clients and focus on relationships during sales. “I make bid presentations in person,” he says. He often develops the 2D and 3D presentations for bids at no up-front cost, and wants the customer service experience to feel superior even before the client signs a contract. “We send appointment reminders and always keep the client informed,” he says.
Hawkins, Jr. is blessed to have developed a business that’s a real family affair. As he says, it’s “all hands on deck.”
It means he and his family spend a lot of time together, and navigate all the headaches that come with running a business, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. Hawkins, Jr.’s wife Carol is at the helm of Hawkins Landscaping’s admin side, while he and his son David Hawkins III focus on business development. With family businesses becoming more of an endangered species, it’s been rewarding to have his son as second-in-command—and David III’s son David IV is already excited and keeping busy with Grandpa and Dad.
One of the things that Hawkins, Jr. is most conscious of is that his company doesn’t just provide employees with “jobs,” but with opportunities to build their lives. “I’ve helped several employees with loans to make down payments on houses and cars,” he says. He focuses on helping employees build security for their families and begin creating the kind of legacy he is building in his own life. His main supervisor, he says, has been with the company for over 20 years.
This is a point of pride for Hawkins, Jr., because as he puts it, “if you don’t take care of your employees, they don’t stay.” His supervisor is just one of several employees that have stayed with the company for a longer tenure. One of his favorite events of the year is the company picnic he holds at his farm, at which he offers games, karaoke, an ice cream truck, bounce house, mechanical bull, and other fun activities for all to enjoy.
A main driver behind Hawkins, Jr.’s consistency is maintaining stability for the community of people he supports. Even in the thick of the uncertainty of COVID, he is proud to mention, “I’ve never laid anybody off.”
Hawkins, Jr. struggles to put his finger on the total number of charities Hawkins Landscaping supports on a regular basis, but he figures it must be around 20. He jokes that Carol bugs him about his tireless generosity, and that he responds with one of his favorite phrases: “We haven’t missed a meal yet.” As long as his family has food on the table, he says, he’s happy to keep giving to others. Hawkins Landscaping has an ongoing relationship with a number of local organizations.
The biggest one, Hawkins, Jr. says, is the Great Frederick Fair. Hawkins Landscaping donates all of the landscaping work at the fairgrounds to support the event, which usually amounts to around 100 hours to set up and 40 to take down. Hawkins has also previously sponsored some of the fair’s concerts. It’s definitely a heavy lift, with no payment accepted other than marketing, but the event is close to Hawkins, Jr.’s heart. “My passion is farming and we’ve always supported 4-H,” he says.
In addition, miscellaneous other beneficiaries include Special Olympics, American Cancer Society (David Hawkins, Sr. passed due to cancer at 51), Hawkins, Jr.’s church, and Habitat for Humanity, which receives some of the landscaping company’s excess materials. Hawkins, Jr. also enjoys working with the Frederick County Career Technology Center, where he mentors occasionally and has offered graduates jobs.
Hawkins, Jr. has used his success to enrich his life and to realize the dream he had all along: owning his own farm. “I wanted to farm from the beginning, and I got into landscaping because it seemed like the most similar thing,” he says. 20 years ago, he purchased a 106-acre farm in Thurmont, which also provides a home base for his business.
The farm is home to horses as well as dogs and cats. He says it’s worked out particularly well and is well-justified by how it allows him to store and maintain business equipment. He loves what he does, but the real treat is getting out on the tractor in the evenings. By starting from the ground up, he’s managed to use business growth to fuel a personal passion that also plays a role in keeping him going.
“Honesty, fairness, integrity – holding on to employees and customers long-term:” these are the key attributes that Hawkins, Jr. says he seeks to exemplify with Hawkins Landscaping. He’s a big proponent of the Golden Rule. These types of ideas aren’t necessarily the trendiest today, with social media always promising a new business hack, but Hawkins Landscaping is proof that they work. David Hawkins, Jr. knows that one thing you can’t argue with is a job done right. HawkinsLandscaping.com
Kevin and Jennifer Cuozzo Use Their Passion for Cars to Help Others Achieve Their Best Ride
ARTICLE BY EMILY DICKEY
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS MARTIN OF CONVOY CREATIVES
On the road of life, when your future’s so bright, you gotta have shade.
Fueled by their passion for automobiles, Kevin and Jennifer Cuozzo, owners of Doctor Tint and Details, have provided customers with shade and detailing to keep their cars protected and looking their best for 27 years.
“We have a car-obsessed life,” Jennifer said, noting cars were a central aspect of their lives growing up. “My dad had
over 100 vehicles and Kevin’s dad worked in the auto industry. We both spent a great deal of time in car dealerships.”
Frederick natives, Jennifer and Kevin met at Frederick Community College and married in 1997.
At the time, Kevin was working for an automotive detail shop while Jennifer finished her accounting degree at Hood College. On their honeymoon, the newlyweds were given the opportunity to buy the business where Kevin was employed.
“We took a chance, then dedicated our lives to making it successful,” said Jennifer, which included working seven days a week and learning all they could about services such as window tinting, ceramic coating, detailing, and paint protection film.
In the beginning, Kevin used knowledge he obtained while training under the previous owner and worked primarily with dealerships. Over the years, he grew his skills by learning more tricks of the trade and getting certified in ceramic coating through Detail King in Pittsburgh. Jennifer has handled the other side of the business, by taking care of bookkeeping, customer service, and marketing.
Through the years, they invested in the Frederick Doctor Tint business “piece by piece.”
“We started with the detailing aspect, then took on automotive window tinting, and finally took on residential and commercial window tinting,” Kevin said.
The road to success wasn’t an easy one for the Cuozzos—there were hard times on their journey as well, including the aftermath of 09/11 and the Covid Pandemic.
“There were two years when we didn’t pay ourselves and lived off savings and credit cards,” Jennifer said. “It was hard, but it has been a great business.”
The business has grown to include another location in Delaware, near Bethany Beach, and more than 10 employees, including two detailers who have been there for more than 20 years. “We have grown a family with our customers and employees,” Jennifer said.
The couple’s daughter, Lillian, and her boyfriend, Jimmy Lucas, are both part of the family business and strive to be integral participants in the company’s operations. “They are just as dedicated as we are,” said Jennifer.
As Kevin and Jennifer look to the future, they are not only proud of their accomplishments thus far, but also that they did it as a team.
“The best part is that we have built it together,” Jennifer said. “It has made our relationship stronger. It all keeps getting better.” TintAndDetails.com
Automotive Window Tinting improves the driving experience because it protects against heat and glare, while also protecting the car’s interior by preventing cracking and fading. Drivers are also protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Window tinting is recommended by dermatologists and the Skin Cancer Foundation.
Ceramic Coating is a protective layer for car’s paint, similar to wax. The liquid polymer chemically bonds to the vehicle and serves as a first line of defense against water, debris, and scratches.
Residential and Commercial Window Tinting protects the interior of homes and businesses, while also blocking out harmful UV rays and cutting heating/cooling costs. Doctor Tint and Details were contracted to do window tinting at the Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History and the pickleball courts inside the Armory. TintAndDetails.com
Part the top half of the hair in two sections. Create fishtail braids (or braids of choice) and tie them together in the back of the hair. Add a fashion accessory around a ponytail for a little extra fun!
Braids are a great way to add style and uniqueness to your hair style rotation and have been a staple in hair styles dating back to 3500 B.C. This historical hairstyle is here to stay, so we wanted to share some go-to impressive looks.
