It’s the Kids and Pets Issue!

Meow,

I’m Eden Prairie Lifestyle publisher John Lee’s cat, Riley. I taught myself English by studying the thought-provoking articles in Eden Prairie Lifestyle.

I was honored when John asked me to write his monthly letter to the readers. Lest you think any less of me, I assure you I wrote this solely because I felt like it; not because I was asked. Cat code requires us only to be helpful when the situation demands it, which is never.

I’ll be honest. I have no idea what Eden Prairie is. John seems very interested in it, so I can only imagine it is a brand of tinned fish, or perhaps a small, round plastic object with a bell inside. Or maybe its name is literal: a heavenly field filled with comfortable places to nap, and mice. Next time I write one of these letters, I’ll do a little research beforehand. If I feel like it.

In this issue we are pleased to present the crème de la crème of local businesses that cater to pets. There is Flying Cloud Animal Hospital, which provides high-quality care to dogs and cats (the latter of whom are incomparably superior). There is Pet Evolution, which provides the bathing, grooming and nutrition services pets need to look their best and feel their liveliest. (I get all my toys there. I accept no less.) There is Suburban Waste Services, the local refuse collection agency which greets dogs with biscuits in hand. There is Midwest Avian Adoption and Rescue Services, which takes in and cares for parrots, cockatoos, cockatiels and conures in need. (I must visit there someday.) And last but not least, there is Helping Paws, which breeds, trains and places assistance dogs throughout Minnesota and bordering areas.

Perhaps this should be the “Kid and Pets” issue, seeing as how we only have one kid-centric story. Fortunately, it is a very nice one: a glimpse at the colorful bunch behind Eden Prairie Montessori. In this issue we are also proud to feature Kim Guild, Realtor and president of The Guild Group, and Chef Kevin Petroske of Olympic Hills Golf Club. Neither is a kid or a pet, but their stories check out.

John would like to thank all of Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s sponsors, whose generous support goes directly toward buying food – for me

Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce Annual Golf Tournament

Advocate. Prosper. Fore!

We’re passionate about two things here at Eden Prairie Lifestyle : cultivating a community in which local businesses thrive best, and golf. Sadly, first sentences of magazine articles aren’t the only kind of hook we’re responsible for. But that’s okay! We still love competing in the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce Annual Golf Tournament for all the right reasons.

This year’s tournament was held on June 5th at The Wilds Golf Club. It was a beautiful day – a chamber of commerce day – with highs in the 70s and low wind as 128 fired-up golfers took to the links. An hours-long flurry of woods and irons ensued as chamber members deftly vied for top honors. Though every team played heroically, only the top three shall be named in the annals of history (aka Eden Prairie Lifestyle).

“We’re grateful to host any event where business owners, executives and community leaders can interact, network and build closer relationships,” said Kirsten Barott, relationship and events manager for the Chamber. “Our Annual Golf Tournament doesn’t just create new business partnerships and opportunities. It raises funds for the chamber’s future events, our business development programs, advocacy efforts and charitable causes. It creates additional visibility and brand awareness for our sponsoring members. C.H. Robinson Eden Prairie Summer Party

SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT. THIRD PARTY LOGISTICS. PARTYING.

Eden Prairie is home to one of the world’s largest logistics firms: C.H. Robinson, which oversees 19 million shipments annually and has $22 billion in freight under management.

Driving the world’s economy forward takes a lot of work – possibly even more than publishing a magazine. When you’re poring over the latest shipment of John Deere tractors, Energizer batteries or Subway sandwich toppings, it can be easy to lose awareness of your team members.

That’s why C.H. Robinson throws their Eden Prairie Summer Party each June. It is a time for the world’s foremost supply chain experts to kick back and relax among their peers. There is music, food, drink, raffle prizes, and plenty of fun and games (including that time-honored staple of all Midwestern social gatherings: cornhole).

“Whether we’re transporting wind turbine blades from Asia or distributing fresh flowers across the country in time for Mother’s Day, our most valuable resource always stays the same. That’s our people. By bringing ourselves closer together over beer and giant Jenga, we’re forging the connections that have made Eden Prairie the world capital of third party logistics.”

This party is strictly for the C.H. Robinson team. If you really want in on the action, then you can begin a rewarding new career right here in town by visiting chrobinson.com.

“We began hosting our Eden Prairie Summer Party after we returned to the office following the pandemic,” said Ruth Gardner, divisional human resources leader for C.H. Robinson. “Solving strategic problems on a daily basis requires a closely knit team – a fact that was underscored once we could no longer share the same workplace – so we decided to bring everyone together for one big shindig. It was such a great hit that we made it an annual tradition.

HELPING PAWS

ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY JOHN
THE POWER OF DOG
"A dog has one aim in life... to bestow his heart."
– J.R. Ackerley

Certain evils aren’t namable in Eden Prairie Lifestyle. One was committed against an 8-year-old girl in St. Cloud, and continued until she confided in her teacher at the age of 16.

The girl’s courtroom testimony was five hours through darkness. She might have frozen had it not been for the warmth at her feet: a lovely blonde dog with big, marble-black eyes, and an expression that betrays equally total incomprehension and understanding.

This golden retriever, named Nova, was the first assistance dog ever allowed to accompany a young victim to the witness stand in Minnesota. It was an occasion made even more momentous by the 30-year sentence which followed. It was

also a testament to one of the greatest goods that will ever be celebrated in this magazine.

Helping Paws is a volunteer-based nonprofit with over 35 years of experience breeding, training and placing assistance dogs throughout Minnesota and bordering areas of surrounding states. Their mission is to further individuals’ independence and quality of life by matching assistance dogs to people with physical disabilities, veterans and first responders with service-related PTSD, and health care, educational, first response and courthouse professionals. Upon the grand opening of their new headquarters on May 5th, 2024, Helping Paws officially became a member of the Eden Prairie community.

“I am the mother of two children with special needs,” said Alyssa Golob. “My older son, Elijah, who has autism, was kicked out of school for the final time when he was in sixth grade. He became depressed, as anyone would, at the prospect of having to complete so many more school years alone, but our family dog Mia helped lift him out of it. I truly believe their incredible bond saved Elijah’s life.

“I had spent 20 years in the non-profit world when I learned Helping Paws needed an executive director. Having already witnessed the power of dog firsthand, I knew this was where I belonged.”

Why does Helping Paws exclusively train goldens and Labs? “Because they’re gentle, athletic, adaptable, intelligent, empathetic, and characteristically enthusiastic about fetching,” said Alyssa. “They are also endlessly loyal – but unlike almost all other breeds, they can easily begin to love a new person without feeling abandoned by their previous one.”

The retriever’s fathomless affection for all of humanity is indispensable to Helping Paws’ system. It takes two-and-a-half years to turn a bumbling puppy into a competent dog. Whenever a trainee isn’t learning how to conduct themself in public, perform complex series of commands, and adjust their surroundings to someone else’s benefit, they are cared for by a volunteer.

“The people who foster our dogs are the most selfless I’ve ever met,” said Alyssa. “They have saved us millions of dollars on food and veterinary care so far, and are the only reason why we can provide dogs valued at up to $35,000 free of charge.

“More than anything, it takes a special kind of person to take in – and unavoidably love – a dog they will say goodbye to so soon. To our volunteers, that sadness is nothing compared to what they feel when they hand a leash over to someone who needs what’s at the end of it far more than they do.

“An assistance dog isn’t just a helper and companion to someone with a physical disability. I recently spoke with one of our volunteers, Sam, who uses a wheelchair and has been paired with one of our dogs. She said she used to feel ignored when she was out in public – like she was seen as some unpleasant reminder of what can happen to others if they aren’t fortunate. But now that she has the dog, people rush over to meet her. They see her. It’s the ripple effect of a Helping Paws dog: spreading inclusion, tolerance and friendship wherever they go.

“One of our clients, Aric, is a combat veteran who was deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan and other war zones during his 25 years of military service. When he returned home to his wife and kids, he essentially went into his basement and didn’t come out again. He was diagnosed with severe anxiety, PTSD, and a musculoskeletal condition shortly after his honorable discharge.

“Aric didn’t think he needed an assistance dog – until he met Minnie. Now he can attend his kids’ hockey games without getting triggered when the puck hits the wall. He is back in the workforce, as a preschool teacher, with Minnie always at his side. She has even given Aric the assurance he needs to enjoy watching Fourth of July fireworks again. All of that, from a single black Lab.”

Witness The Power Of Dog

Helping Paws regularly works to help educate the public about assistance dogs, including how the dogs enhance the lives of people with disabilities, veterans with PTSD, and the community at large. They are available to conduct special presentations for service organizations, schools, clubs, corporations, and other social gatherings. Demonstrations may be 30 to 60 minutes long or customized to fit other needs, and include:

• An overview of Helping Paws: who they are and what they do

• How Helping Paws trains dogs using only positive reinforcement

Helping Paws placed 16 assistance dogs during the 2022-2023 fiscal year. Their staff and volunteers hope to nearly quadruple the number of lives they change each year by 2027. It will be a group effort – not just by the non-profit’s staff and dogs, but by the good people who surround Helping Paws as well. FLYING CLOUD ANIMAL HOSPITAL

Preserving Love, One Pet at a Time

And in the end

The love you take Is equal to the love you make – Sir Paul McCartney

The love you share with your dog is special. It is pure and simple, yet totally non-transactional. Although your dog cannot comprehend all the good you do for them, they still love you like they do.

The love you share with your cat is equally special. They do have high expectations of you, of course, but that’s perfectly reasonable for an animal who believes they are royalty.

Caring for your cherished pet goes far beyond giving them treats and toys. It includes doing everything you’re able to keep them healthy – right up to bringing them back

from the brink of death. If you live in Eden Prairie, you can uphold this pact by bringing your dog, cat or pocket pet to Flying Cloud Animal Hospital.

“I grew up on a ranch in central South Dakota,” said Dr. Jeffrey Krull, co-owner and managing veterinarian of Flying Cloud Animal Hospital. “I started caring for the animals there before I can remember, but my awakening didn’t come until I was 5 years old. That’s when our horses got into the cattle feed, which is poisonous to them. Polly, my dad’s favorite Quarter Horse, got the worst of it. The vet told him nothing could be done. It was one of the very few times I believe my father cried.

“From that moment on, I wanted to be a vet; not just for the animals themselves, but for the people who love them.

Drs. Carrie Rodman, Mike Grace, Jeffrey Krull, Jessica Koupal and Zach Beach

“I was blessed to spend a large part of my childhood caring for farm animals. Vaccinating them. Treating them for cuts from barbed wire. Helping them have their babies. Whenever the livestock were content with themselves, I’d find ways to make life better for the barn cats and cattle dogs. I even took the local wildlife under my wing … except for the skunks. I’m sure they could have used my help, too, but I didn’t want my mom to make me sleep outside.”

Dr. Krull would go on to study veterinary medicine at Iowa State, during which time he also worked at Flying Cloud Animal Hospital. “I had the good fortune of working under Dr. Steve Harris: former owner of Flying Cloud Animal Hospital, and the greatest vet I will ever know,” said Dr. Krull. “As luck would have it, he and I crossed paths again a few years later during a conference in Las Vegas. I was raising a family there at the time and was eager for a change of scenery, so I gladly accepted Dr. Harris’ invitation to join him in Eden Prairie. Talk about night and day!”

Dr. Harris’ retirement in 2009 put Dr. Krull at the helm of Flying Cloud Animal Hospital. It might have been a daunting transition if not for the team at his side.

“Drs. Zach Beach, Mike Grace, Jessica Koupal and Carrie Rodman will all forgive me for saying Dr. Harris was the best,” said Dr. Krull. “They and the rest of our staff are all outstandingly dedicated and talented, and the reason why we consistently live up to our clinic’s mission: to provide thoughtful, informed veterinary care. That includes routine preventative care, dental services, disease screenings, and anything else household pets need to enjoy longer, happier and healthier lives.”

Many good boys and girls owe many good years on earth to the Flying Cloud Animal Hospital team. There is Tucker, a 4-year-old rescue shih tzu whose eye ulcers nearly blinded him; brought back to the light after Dr. Beach spent four weeks treating him at his own home. There is Annabelle, a senior mixed breed with a heart condition that requires regular abdominal draining; currently in her fifth month of treatment, but no less full of life. There is Rocco, who needed intestinal surgery after eating rocks; and again, for the same reason. Even Dr. Krull’s own dog, Lobo, has been saved by Flying Cloud Animal Hospital’s exhaustive approach to veterinary care.

“Lobo had a large swelling on the left side of his jaw,” said Dr. Krull. “Initial X-rays suggested it could have been malignant and untreatable cancer. Wanting to leave nothing to chance, we performed a bone biopsy, which revealed that the source of the swelling was actually an aggressive bacterial infection. That little extra effort to reach the correct diagnosis saved Lobo’s life. He is now 13 years old and happy as ever.

“Dr. Rodman and I recently treated Josie, an older cat who had been losing weight and not eating well. Her blood work showed probable signs of terminal cancer, but there was also a slight chance it could have been autoimmune hemolytic anemia. We explained treatment options to her family, who welcomed any opportunity to save their beloved cat. One week later, her condition worsened. Even so, we continued administering medication. Two weeks later, a little better – just enough

to give us hope. Flash forward to today, and Josie’s blood values are showing 90 percent improvement. We’re not out of the woods just yet, but she is now gaining weight and back to doting on her family just like she used to.

“While these were all enormous successes for our team, every day gives us something to take pride in, however small it might be. Providing extraordinary veterinary care demands an extraordinary amount of work, but at the end of the day, it’s all in service of one thing: preserving love. If that’s not something worth devoting yourself to, what is?”

THE CRIMES OF BEAUTY AND CHARISMA

Midwest Avian Adoption and Rescue Services

“You have never met a bird more passionate about screaming until you have met a Moluccan cockatoo.

"Carly came to us in 2007 after a confiscation from an animal hoarder in St. Paul," said Galiena Cimperman. "He was a Moluccan cockatoo - a light pink bird native to the Indonesian lowlands, where he should have spent his days foraging for fruits and nuts with his flock. Instead, Carly was confined to a cage in a basement, where he was treated in ways which don't merit description.

"Carly was seizing almost constantly when we first took him in. He required a month of round-the-clock supportive care. At one point we almost decided to euthanize him … but we kept on trying, and he ended up thriving. Though he would never be all right again. His injuries had taken his vision, and he would suffer from seizures and other neurological impairments for the rest of his life.

“Moluccan cockatoos love to scream. You have never met a bird more passionate about screaming until you have met a Moluccan cockatoo. But Carly never screamed, which we suspected his former owner was responsible for.

“So we did what we do with every bird here at MAARS: we loved Carly. We bombarded him with praise and affection whenever he uttered so much as a peep. It wasn’t long till he remembered every cockatoo’s greatest joy in life and began screaming at the top of his lungs whenever the opportunity presented itself, which in his opinion was very often.

“Carly was happy, in his little way, playing with his toys and filling our facility with raucous squawking. Not as happy as he would have been had he just been allowed to stay in his natural habitat, but he did as well as he could with the hand he was dealt. Now that he’s no longer with us, we’ll always remember Carly as one of our greatest successes.”

“SKOOWEET!” A sharp screech pealed out just as Galiena finished her story. “Don’t mind her,” said the executive director of Midwest Avian Adoption & Rescue Services (MAARS). “That’s just Zoey, our

57-year-old Goffin's cockatoo. She’s actually one of the less squawky members of her very squawky species, but she’s also incredibly smart. I think she thinks you called to talk about her.”

Indeed I had, although not about Zoey, specifically. I reached out to talk about an organization that has rescued almost 1,500 birds since its foundation in 1999, and which has placed nearly all of them into permanent homes. The Landing, MAARS’ 4,000-squarefoot facility in St. Paul, houses a cacophonous rainbow of about 85 parrots, cockatoos, cockatiels and conures; all recovered from horrific conditions, now affectionately tended by almost 70 volunteers.

“Parrots are gorgeous and personable,” said Galiena. “But they also live upwards of 80 years, have bone-breakers on their faces, and amuse themselves by screaming and destroying anything softer than their beaks. That’s why so many parrots wind up as pets – and why almost as many are abandoned. An inordinate number of them wind up outliving, injuring or annoying their owners.

“MAARS was founded to absorb the astronomical influx of parrots that are abandoned in the Twin Cities. Dog and cat shelters are understandably poorly equipped to take care of parrots, which have exceptional behavioral needs and need tremendous amounts of care before they’re ready for their forever homes. Nowadays we specialize in caring for seriously challenged birds that have no chance of getting adopted. We’re one of very few refuges in the country that can accommodate them comfortably and humanely.

“We’re currently looking into moving to a larger location, but we’re well equipped at The Landing for now. We have a cockatoo room, a macaw and Amazon room, a cockatiel flight room, and another area for the conures and rose-ringed parakeets. When our volunteers are running their shifts, all the birds are out and about sitting on their perches, running around, and looking for mischief wherever they can find it.

Parrots are gorgeous and personable. “ ”

“We owe everything to our volunteers, who supply the on-site veterinary care, rehab, behavioral training and kindness that heals parrots after lifetimes – oftentimes literally – of abuse. We’re just as indebted to our donors, whose gifts go directly toward purchasing food, medical supplies, and ultimately our new, bigger location.

“We also dedicate a sizable portion of our budget to toys. Parrots, which should spend about 90 percent of their waking hours flying around and foraging, have extremely active minds. They require constant visual and auditory stimuli, which means toys are central to their world while they’re living in captivity. They even have strong preferences. Some love wood. Some love foam. Some love plastic. A few even make custom toys by delicately combining two or three materials with their beaks.”

In a brilliant move, MAARS has begun putting their birds’ creativity to work for fundraising. If you visit maars.org, you can browse abstract paintings created by the likes of Bongo Bob the umbrella cockatoo, Bizzy the Goffin’s cockatoo, and Cookie the double yellow-headed Amazon. Order a print and take heart that your money is going toward things that are good for parrots. You can also learn how to volunteer at MAARS,

just like Eden Prairie’s very own Sarah Breiner – the one and only Legal Mama.

“As an attorney who specializes in estate planning, I see what happens when pets outlive their owners all too often,” said Sarah. “Parrots, which can live longer than a century, are extreme examples, but that just makes caring for them that much more important. Whether I’m cleaning out cages or teaching a macaw that it’s okay to trust people, I’m making a difference to animals who are wise enough to genuinely appreciate my efforts.”

“What parrots go through in captivity is heart-breaking to me,” continued Galiena. “They’re wild animals with fierce intellects, and we take so much away from them by putting them in cages where they’re treated like nothing more than ornaments. Decor that suffers –guilty of the crimes of beauty and charisma.”

“SKOOWEET!”

“And we work with them. And we love them. And we hope against hope that one day we’ll no longer be needed, because we pray people will realize that something so beautiful deserves to be – was born to be – free.”

PET

evolution

If left to their own devices, your dog would eat questionable things and stink. Luckily for them, they have won the dog lottery. They have the best pal in the world to take care of them!

If you want your pooch to look and feel like a million barks, then you need only go to Pet Evolution of Eden Prairie. The locally owned franchise offers convenient self-wash stations, professional grooming services, and the foods and supplements which fuel canine bodies best. (Cats eat good at Pet Evolution, too!)

WASHING

Is your dog starting to smell like … you know … a dog? Destinkify Fido at one of Pet Evolution’s DIY pup scrub stations! Fully adjustable nozzles. Comfortably warm water. Tubs that safely accommodate big lugs and distinguished seniors. Unlimited shampoo, unlimited towels, and complimentary smocks. One round with the high-velocity commercial air dryer, and presto – a dog that could easily pass for a bed of roses based on scent alone.

GROOMING

If you want to truly beautify your dog, then it’s time to enlist the professionals. Pet Evolution’s seven full-time groomers and three full-time bathers are standing by to provide a “shampooch,” a quick trim around the face and paws, or a full groom that would make any AKC champ growl with envy.

“We’re huge on continuing education,” said David Denniston, franchise owner. “Our groomers are always learning new techniques from online classes and the experts who regularly teach at our store. Whether your dog needs a cool summer shave, a by-the-book breed cut, or a field cut that will help them slip through the wilderness, we’ll make sure you love their new look.

“We make pet grooming convenient, easy and rewarding. You can schedule an appointment weeks in advance, or book the same day if you have to. We’ll help you understand your options, ask what we can

do to accommodate your dog’s health and personality, and let you know when we’re almost finished. We’ll even send you an after pic! And if we discover any health issues that can be addressed through a change in diet, then Alex Apsey, our team’s certified nutritionist, will be happy to tell you more.”

“We

make pet grooming convenient, easy and rewarding.”

NUTRITION

“I’m knowledgeable on the wide range of health challenges dogs commonly face, including obesity, mobility, thyroid, urinary, cardiovascular, dermatologic and gastrointestinal issues,” said Alex. “If you need help balancing your dog’s diet, choosing the right homemade or commercial diet for their unique needs, or making informed decisions about the many supplements we offer for sale, you can count on my expertise to make your best friend look and feel great!

“Our health solutions save a lot of dogs from unnecessary trips to the vet. If your dog’s paws have become red and flaky, our Yeasty Beast Protocol homeopathic remedy can undo the damage. If they have a lot of anxiety, ask me to recommend the right CBD chew or tincture. And if their coat has lost its luster, I’ll design just the right diet to restore that healthy sheen.”

Navigating Pet Evolution’s massive selection of single-ingredient, limited-ingredient, grain-free, grain-in, raw and freeze-dried foods can be daunting without Alex’s guidance. But once she has learned what your dog likes to eat – and gathered what they should be eating – she will devise a full, well-rounded diet that they’ll love wolfing down.

Suburban Waste Services

My name is Bonzo. I live in Eden Prairie. I am a dog. I am assured quite often that I am a good boy.

Part of being a good boy is knowing who I can trust around my family. Mail carriers? They get woofed at. Morning joggers? They get woofed at. Deer? They get woofed at. Nothing in particular at three in the morning? I play it safe. I woof at it.

But the garbage man? He is good. He is my friend. He brings me treats. I look forward to getting treats from the garbage man and I love him.

It didn’t always used to be this way. Before my family hired Suburban Waste Services, there were no treats. Then they hired Suburban Waste Services. Now there are treats. That is why I like Suburban Waste Services.

My family seems to really like them, too, even though they don’t get treats. They are weird. They are lucky I am here to woof at things for them. – Bonzo the Goldendoodle (dictated but not read)

Suburban Waste Services was founded in Eden Prairie 17 years ago by Paul and Katie Rosland and Rick Sievers. What began as a two-driver, one-receptionist operation grew to cover the entire southwest metro – a testament to the quality of their service.

“The national operations are only driven by profit and productivity,” said Paul. “By forfeiting customer service, those companies created the niche that Suburban Waste Services was founded to fill: great service for fair prices, by the local guys. When you call us, a recorded voice won’t answer. And when we promise to pick up your trash on a certain day, we do.”

course, is biscuits. Treats have gone a long way toward making sure dogs are polite to drivers. Just as importantly, treat deliveries provide something seldom associated with waste collection: hearty chuckles

“It doesn’t take long until a dog starts getting excited at the sound of our truck approaching,” said Paul. “Watching your dog’s ears perk up when they sense our arrival is always a hoot. We get tons of funny photos of our little buddies waiting patiently by the curb, too.”

If a dog isn’t present to receive their treat in person, they’ll find it waiting for them on the bin’s lid. Truly a hallmark of first-rate waste removal!

“Many of our residential clients are relieved to find out that we offer commercial service as well,” said Chris White, account executive. “They’ve already experienced the Suburban Waste Services difference firsthand, and are eager to have us make their jobs easier. People have actually fought to get out of contracts with their previous waste collection service just so they could switch over to us.

“Running a business means dealing with constant unexpected challenges. You can count on us to overcome them. For example, when one of our clients opened a new apartment complex, they didn’t realize just how much cardboard and styrofoam packaging their tenants would bury them under. We sent a rear loader that very same day, and their problem disappeared just like that.

“There was another time when our client’s parking lot sank right in front of their trash containment area. It was more work to push the dumpster out to where it could be unloaded, but we were happy to go that extra distance.

“Effort. Communication. Versatility. Reliability. If you think you can’t get all of these from your commercial waste service, just give us a chance to change your expectations!”

Treat yourself. If you want the ultimate in residential or commercial waste pickup, then Eden Prairie’s finest is at your service. Call (952) 937-8900 to speak with a real person, or learn more at suburbanwastemn.com.

Eden Prairie Montessori

THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF KINDNESS

Go to any continent except Antarctica. There you will find a Montessori school.

Go to either Eden Prairie Montessori location. There you will find preschool and kindergarten teachers from every corner of the world (except Antarctica). It’s a real cosmopolitan vibe.

Eden Prairie Montessori’s teachers were all drawn to the same model of education precisely because it transcends cultural boundaries. Wherever and whoever you are, great things are bound to happen when you nourish children’s natural interests in a caring, supportive environment.

“You can be from anywhere on earth. You can come from any tradition. You can have any mother tongue. But love, respect, and kindness? Those languages are universal,” said Shonali Harrison, director of Eden Prairie Montessori.

“Our teachers all share the same thing in common: a passion for early childhood education. It’s our other talents that make each of us special. Some of us love singing. Some of us love playing musical instruments. The best of us love sharing their cooking. And because so many of us come from so far away, we’re able to treat children to a kaleidoscope of different cultures.

“We regularly celebrate diversity at Eden Prairie Montessori – not just the concept of it, but the lovely things which make our world so vibrant. On cultural days our teachers are welcome to wear their traditional dress to school. There are German lederhosen, Norwegian bunads, Pakistani sherwanis, Russian sarafans, and more styles of Mexican dresses than I can name. I’m proud to represent my home country of Sri Lanka in a brightly colored sari.

“And of course there are all the beautiful languages. Our teachers speak Arabic, Farsi, Hindi, Lao, Navajo, Russian, Sinhala, Swahili, Turkish, and many Spanish dialects of Central and South America. It’s adorable to see children answer Miss Maria with an enthusiastic ‘Sí, señorita,’ and yell out ‘Aye yi yi!’ when something goes wrong.

“We share treats from different countries. Nothing too exotic, of course. The average Eden Prairie preschooler might not be adventurous enough to try kottu roti just yet, but tropical fruits and foreign candies always capture their full attention. Food – yet another universal language, and one that can lead to bigger conversations about the world around us.

“Our students are amazed to learn how differently people live. When I share stories about my childhood without television, I can almost see their minds expanding. They’re especially interested in the way many Sri Lankan children spend their Saturdays: going around picking up bottles and cans to sell at the nearest recycling plant. After hearing stories like those, they can’t help but feel more gratitude for everything they have. It helps them learn the importance of taking care of their belongings and surroundings. It teaches them that every blessing is meant to be cherished.

“Our classrooms are filled with little souvenirs from our countries of origin. There are djembes and tablas for children to drum on. There are curious things like Native American dreamcatchers, elephants made of ebony, clay pots from Asia, and authentic klompen from Holland. There are paintings of white sand beaches, Egyptian pharaohs, and camels crossing the Sahara. There are enough flags to start a Model UN. And lest she be forgotten, there is also the Statue of Liberty: ‘A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles.’

“We regularly celebrate diversity at Eden Prairie Montessori – not just the concept of it, but the lovely things which make our world so vibrant.”

“Getting along with others who aren’t like you is easy. A gentle touch. A listening ear. The power of a smile. These are the universal language of kindness. It’s our hope that all of our students will learn it, and spend their lives spreading it wherever they go.”

Eden Prairie Montessori has two convenient locations at 7455 Market Place Drive and 8098 Glen Lane. You may learn more about their infant, toddler, preschool, kindergarten and summer programs at edenprairiemontessori.com, as well as schedule a tour of either school with Shonali at your side.

chef KEVIN PETROSKE

Food isn’t truly great unless it tells a story. When you dine at Eden Prairie’s own Olympic Hills Golf Club, that story comes from Kevin Petroske.

The country club’s executive chef grew up surrounded by food and worked his way into the restaurants. Although he started out bussing tables, it didn’t take Kevin long to rise through the ranks to management.

But the young chef aspired to even greater heights. He went on to study at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts during the day while working nights at the Lake Elmo Inn. “It’s a wonderful restaurant: family owned and totally independent, where I was at liberty to create interesting new features every evening,” said Kevin. “That was where my love affair with menu creation and ice carving truly began.”

One year after earning his associate degree, Kevin joined Redstone American Grill and proceeded to spend the next decade traveling around the country opening their new locations. “Redstone really honed my culinary management skills,” said Kevin. “Everything had to be perfect, on time, and consistent.”

THE CULINARY ARTIST OF OLYMPIC HILLS GOLF CLUB

In 2014 Kevin became director of culinary for Bonfire Wood Fire Cooking and Axels Restaurant Group. Shortly after taking the position, he was chosen for a spot in the culinary enrichment program with the Culinary Institute of America to develop his understanding of new techniques, leadership and dietary training. After learning all he could about purchasing, budgeting and facilities management in the director role, he decided it was time to get back to the kitchen.

“During my interview with Olympic Hills in 2018, the owner asked how I felt about building my own kitchen,” Kevin recalled. “I said ‘Where do I sign?’ After accepting the job, they said to shoot for the moon – so I did. We tore down walls, installed every state-of-the-art amenity right down to oversized cooler doors that can accommodate ice bars and sculptures, and even added my very own chef’s table. It gives eight guests a full view of the kitchen while we’re preparing their six-course tasting dinner, and allows me to explain all the wonderful things they’re enjoying in person.

“Whether I’m cooking for the chef’s table, the dining room, or hundreds of wedding guests, I look to use intriguing ingredients whenever possible. I seek out food that has a story, is sustainable, and accentuates the color of my dishes. I especially enjoy challenging Minnesotans’ preconceptions about seafood. If you think perch is a throw-away fish, wait until you’ve tried one from the ocean that fed itself on a steady diet of crab.

“I have always considered myself an artist. I was fortunate to discover early on that food is the perfect medium with which to express myself. Instead of spending months perfecting a masterpiece, I’m able to get that same satisfaction every day.

“I suppose I’ve always gravitated toward the ephemeral. No dish I serve survives longer than a few minutes, let alone throughout the ages. My ice sculptures have a somewhat longer lifespan. It was a thrill to unveil my ninefoot-tall sculpture of Anubis at the St. Paul Winter Carnival – but like everything else I’ve ever made, it soon vanished.

“That’s okay. Art shines brightest the moment people first discover it. Whether it’s duck confit or an ice dragon, it should never outstay its welcome.”  olympichills.com

realtor KIM GUILD,

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF THE GUILD GROUP

“It’s amazing how it goes,” said Kim Guild, president of The Guild Group with Keller Williams Realty. “I became a mother 21 years ago. I became a Realtor one year after. Discovering my two greatest joys in life so close together sure made time fly by fast … and I wouldn’t change a minute of it.

“Do you know how they say to leave your job at the door when you come home each day? I don’t think a passionate Realtor is capable of it. This is a lifestyle – not a job – and I love it because it always gives me something to think about. It always gives me something to strive toward, too. And after two decades of success on both sides of the closing table, it always gives me something to take pride in. I treasure every happy memory I share with my clients.

“I became a mother 21 years ago. I became a Realtor one year after.
Discovering my two greatest joys in life so close together sure made time fly by fast … and I wouldn’t change a minute of it.”

“If you want to excel in real estate, then you’d better do a whole lot more listening than talking. Every question I ask is another chance to learn what truly matters to my client. Why do you want to move? What are you looking for on the other side? What scares you the most? Sometimes people say ‘spiders,’ but even information like that can prove helpful on my mission.

“You’ve got to take the happy with the sad in this business. On one day I might help newlyweds find the perfect nest to feather for their growing family. On the next, I’m liquidating marital assets. Either way, I ask the questions that keep my client’s sights set on their goals. I wouldn’t go so far as to call what I do therapy. But I listen. I advise. I share joy and sorrow, because I can’t help but deeply care about whomever I’m working for. Empathy: It can’t be dialed down.

“It’s also not enough to guarantee the best return on investment. That’s where experience makes the greatest difference. After decades of home sales, I’ve learned exactly which repairs and renovations are going to have the most dramatic effect on the price at closing. I explain the punch list I create to each client, and provide whatever assistance they need to fully leverage it.

“Need a painter, roofer, electrician, or any other contractor? I can recommend the Twin Cities’ best because I’ve worked with and vetted them all before. Not sure which light fixtures, faucets, carpeting, and other features you should choose? Let me handle it. I know what buyers like best. Don’t have time to meet with a plumber? I do. Just hand me your key and I’ll see to the rest!

“My hope is to build a lifelong and rewarding relationship with each of my clients. Hand-written birthday cards. Barbecues, holiday parties and happy hours. Just stopping by out of the blue with your favorite treat (which I surreptitiously found out about months earlier). These are all ways I continue to show my appreciation to my clients. They’re small gestures, but small things add up to big ones. Ninety percent of my business comes from referrals – more than three times as much as the average Realtor.

“To me, that’s the greatest mark of success. Earning clients’ business is relatively easy. Earning their trust is quite another thing altogether. When one of my clients refers me to their neighbor, parent, friend or child, I know they’re genuinely confident in my abilities.”
