Cullman is rich with local financial institutions, and those institutions invest back into the community, contributing mightily by supporting numerous nonprofits and schools, partnering with area businesses and positively impacting the overall quality of residents’ lives.
Here, we take a look at four local banks: Cullman Savings Bank, First Community Bank, Premier Bank of the South and Traditions Bank.
John Riley – President and CEO
Cullman Savings Bank was founded in 1887 by 30 of the original settlers of Cullman. It was originally named Cullman Building & Loan, and the first president, Founder G.O. Dinckelberg, devised a plan for each member to deposit a small amount of money into a pool. The members could lend the money to each other until each member constructed his own home. This arrangement remained until each member had the opportunity to build or acquire his home. Back then, there were no regular office hours, so members assembled each Saturday night to transact business.
In 1941, the bank changed its name to Cullman Savings & Loan. It moved to its present location at 316 Second Ave. SW in 1970. A branch office in Hanceville was opened in 1979. Cullman Savings & Loan converted to a federal savings bank charter and changed its name to Cullman Savings Bank in 1994. A second branch was opened at the intersection of Eva Road and Alabama Highway 157 in 2004. Cullman Savings Bank’s South Branch, located at 1652 Second Ave. SW, opened in 2013.
The bank formed the new Cullman Bancorp, Inc. in July 2021 and sold stock to its depositors, enabling depositors and the community to share in the bank’s long-term growth and success.
“Banking locally means quick turnaround, personalized service and giving back to the community,” said Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer T'aira Ugarkovich. “A true local or community bank’s success or failure depends on the financial health of the community. It is in our best interest to always be looking for ways to make our community stronger.”
In 2002, the Board of Directors formed the Cullman Savings Foundation, which merged with Cullman Savings Bank Foundation in 2011. To date, Cullman Savings Bank Foundation has given over $728,000 back to various community projects including the Field of Miracles, Good Samaritan Health Clinic, Wallace State Community College Future Foundation and many other projects.
“We are proud of the role we play in contributing to the vitality and quality of life in the communities
we serve through partnerships with local businesses and nonprofit organizations,” said Ugarkovich. “Since our founding in 1887, we have maintained a rich history of supporting our communities through a combination of leadership, employee engagement, volunteerism, sponsorships and giving. Working with local communities and knowing that our involvement makes a difference is something we focus on daily.”
William R. Faulk – President and CEO
First Community Bank started as Improved Savings and Loan in 1905. Its current Board of Directors includes Finis E. (Fess) St. John IV, William R. Faulk, Garlan Gudger Jr and Terri McGriff-Waldrop.
“As Cullman grew, Improved Savings and Loan did as well. It was more about community than business. Over the next few decades, we became a staple in community banking and changed the name to First Federal Savings,” said Vice President and Director Of Public Relations Rachel McPhillips. “In 1994, William R. Faulk was named president and CEO. His vision has continued to blaze the trail we are on today. In 2008, our
current home was constructed on Second Avenue Southwest and Fifth Street Southwest. In 2011, First Federal changed its name to First Community Bank to reflect our passion for community growth and support. We have been a part of Cullman’s continued growth from the very beginning.”
She continued, “Banking locally offers a range of benefits for customers or businesses. Providing personalized service is where local banks excel. Customers often enjoy more direct interaction with staff who are familiar with their financial needs and can offer tailored solutions. Additionally, local banks tend to have fewer fees and lower lending rates compared to larger financial institutions, which can result in cost savings for customers.
“Supporting the local economy is another significant benefit of banking locally. By keeping deposits within the community, local banks can reinvest in the growth and support of the area. Local banks are more invested in the well-being of the community and are often involved in philanthropic efforts and community development projects, making them a vital pillar of support for Cullman.”
McPhillips said giving back to the community is a powerful way to make a positive impact.
“We believe that building community starts with supporting the local schools, whether that is through team sponsorships or volunteering time and resources for programs like the Liberty Learning Foundation,” she said. “Being able to show support in community events and programs like Oktoberfest and Bloomin’ Festival is extremely rewarding.”
“In 1987 my father, Jay Mullins, and several local business men and women formed First Commercial Bank of Cullman County with the sole purpose of serving the citizens of Cullman County with a locally owned and operated bank. Since the very beginning, our sole mission has been to provide all of our customers with the best possible customer service, while offering all of the products that the larger chain banks provide,” said Mullins.
“The citizens of Cullman County blessed us beyond imagination, and we decided to branch out into other areas of north Alabama with the same mission in mind, premier customer service and products for all of our current and future customers. We changed our name to Premier Bank of the South in 2004 to signify that not only will we always take care of our original Cullman customer base, but also that we are committed to serving other areas of north Alabama. We have always remained locally owned and operated, with no plans to change that in sight.”
Mullins continued, “I could spend hours on all of the benefits of banking locally, but they all circle back to one truth: personal relationships. With all of the advancements in technology today, it has gotten easier to handle banking needs remotely. We strive to constantly implement or upgrade our technology to allow customers all of the products to be as remote as they choose. But even with all of the technological advancements, I firmly believe that it is imperative to have a personal relationship with your bank, to be able to sit down and have face-to-face conversations, to be able to pick up the phone and actually talk to another human. This can be easily lost in today’s environment.”
Mullins concluded, “We have been so blessed over our 37 years, and we feel that it is our duty to give back to the communities that allow us to serve them.
Whether it is helping the local school systems with various needs that arise, supporting local festivals and/or contributing to charitable events, we take great pride in supporting our communities. Our customers are what makes our success possible, and if we can give support locally to show our gratitude, then it is our honor and privilege to do so.”
Tim Compton – President and CEO
Traditions Bank opened in 2003 as a consumer-driven community bank serving Cullman County, and surrounding counties within a radius of approximately 35 miles from downtown Cullman.
“Traditions is a very informal, blue-collar organization with a constant goal of building financial bridges with people from all walks of life, with no regard for social or income status, ethnic background, age, gender, profession, etc.,” said Compton.
He said the benefits of banking locally are completely centered around an agility or flexibility factor in the decisions that are made.
“This agility factor is very difficult to duplicate in organizations that cover multiple states or much larger geographic areas,” said Compton.
He continued, “Traditions makes every effort to give back in our community with the goal of simply giving to the people or organizations that will be using 100% of the money for the good of the community. We feel strongly that this philosophy of giving has a more positive local impact than giving to national organizations that are large bureaucracies with organizational expenses that dilute the money given.”
'SMALL-TOWN
Gentlemen, show us your smiles!
When it comes to your health, dental care is extremely important. Regular teeth cleanings and exams, and, of course, daily brushing and flossing are a must because, as the saying goes, “There’s no health without oral health.”
Dr. Jonathan Echols knows a thing or two about that.
Echols, the son of the late, beloved physician Dr. Bob Echols, owns Cullman Cosmetic & Family Dentistry in the heart of the city’s southeast side.
The younger Echols purchased the practice of Dr. Edwards 20 years ago, followed by the practices of Dr. Carter and Dr. Freeman. After the infamous tornadoes of 2011, the practice’s building was demolished, and the current building was erected.
Three years ago, Echols decided to sell his practice, but he had second thoughts.
“We exist in a wonderful community that has a small-town American feel,” Echols said. “In September 2021 I sold my practice to a dental management company. After what I felt were a lot of wrong turns and mismanagement, I decided to make an offer to take it back. By purchasing back my practice at the end of 2023, we were able to preserve the legacy of a small-town American feel in a wonderful community.”
The practice offers all the services you’d expect from a dental practice, and then some.
“We provide all services from extractions to root canals to implants. We do hybrid dentures, locator dentures and traditional dentures,” said Echols, “but our niche is that we offer it all. We don’t refer you out – and because we have four doctors on staff, you never have to worry we will be closed.
Cullman Cosmetic & Family Dentistry is also very involved in the community, often engaging with local nonprofits.
“Our practice manager was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. We partnered with the Cullman County Bosom Buddies that year for its annual Little Pink Dress event. We sponsor every year now,” said Echols. “We also participate in Smiles for Life. That’s an organization that gives back to children in need by giving away whitening kits for donations. We also work with The Link of Cullman County in various ways.”
Echols talked about what he feels is the most special thing about Cullman Cosmetic & Family Dentistry.
“Our greatest hope is that all who enter our doors leave with a sense of being better just for coming to see us. Our wish is that everyone has the chance to reach their potential in dentistry as well as in life. Our mission statement is: Helping People Reach Their Potential. I am so thankful I get to change people’s lives every day.”
Echols has served on the Foundation Board of Trustees for Cullman Regional as well as the Good Samaritan Health Clinic. He is a deacon at Cullman Church of Christ and also serves his community by working with missions and the youth of the church.
Other dentists on staff include Dr. James Porter, Dr. Ashley Holladay and Dr. Perron Tucker.
Cullman Cosmetic & Family Dentistry is located at 311 Sixth Ave. SE. Keep up with the practice and its community engagement activities online at www. facebook.com/CullmanDentist , www.instagram. com/cullmandentist and www.cullmandentist.com

Danny Steele worked in the pool industry for several years before taking his knowledge and branching out on his own – founding D&S Pools – in 1992.
“Internet and cell phones were not popular in the 90s so Danny went door to door and asked homeowners if they were interested in having a pool built,” his daughter-in-law, Tiffany Steele, shared. “Danny had great success with this; he has built hundreds of pools over his 32 years in business.”
The name of the family business is special, too.
“When you ask Danny what D&S stands for, he chuckles and says, ‘What do you think it stands for?’ Ultimately, he will tell you it stands for Dad & Son,” she smiled.

His son (and Tiffany Steele’s husband), Chris Steele, grew up around the pool industry. “He still remembers being woken up at the crack of dawn on those summer school breaks because it was time to build another pool,” she laughed.
While dad was still building pools, his son started a career in law enforcement in 2015.
“In 2020, the pandemic caused the swimming pool industry to hit a massive increase with a high demand. Danny was overloaded with work and asked Chris if he wanted to help run a crew on his off days,” Steele continued. “Chris was more than happy to help his dad out when he could. In 2021, swimming pools were such a demand that Chris stepped down from law enforcement to help his dad full-time. That year, Chris decided he wanted to take his lifelong knowledge of pools and provide for his family.”
She continued, “Chris had a dream and expectation of what this business could
look like so he took the name D&S Pools and added ‘+ Outdoor Living’ to it. He obtained his pool contracting license and officially took the reins in 2022. Danny still works alongside Chris. With D&S Pools + Outdoor Living, you get two state-licensed pool professionals for the price of one!”
D&S Pools + Outdoor Living specializes in new installation, repairs and remodeling of in-ground pools. It offers customizable in-ground pools and spas with the industry’s highest-quality materials and the latest technology. It also provides service calls and maintenance, on-site water testing and weekly cleaning, and in-water and outdoor furniture and games.
Asked about a unique project for D&S Pools + Outdoor Living, Steele shared one of her husband’s custom designs.
“In recent years, tanning ledges have become a leading add-on in the pool industry. These tanning ledges (also known as sundecks) are fully customizable,”
she said. “Three years ago, Chris sat down with a client who wanted a tanning ledge but also a section for kids to play while still having the space to swim underwater. Chris designed a tanning ledge that checked every box for that customer and several more (even us, personally!). This custom pool design has become a signature seller at D&S. It starts with your choice of liner, which covers the first 6-inch step that runs across the entryway from one end to the other. That step is followed by a nice sized platform that toddlers can enjoy or you can place a lounge chair on. This design then shifts into a deeper step that follows a nice 4-foot platform that kids really splash into. It slopes into a 6-foot deep end for anyone to enjoy. Finally, this custom design is topped off with the perfect water circulation with precise placement of jets and extra lighting for the full experience.”

Muncher realizes how special it is to be in business with his father and brother.
“We’ve had a lot of time to learn to work together. Growing up there were always home improvement projects going on so we worked together then. Elijah and I have always had similar interests, working on cars, motorcycles and other projects. “For a long time the security industry was somewhat stagnant when it came to innovation,” he said, “but in the last few years the tech has grown leaps and bounds with new products like Bluetooth and NFC (near field communication) devices that allow you to access your space with your phone, cameras with all sorts of AI-integrated analytics, etc.”
Muncher was excited to share some big news: “We’re starting a sister company! The company is called Borders Fencing & Fabrication and it’s going to be all about fencing and gate fabrication. It’s a good fit to go alongside our current model, since we install a lot of gate operators and gate access already.”

Tradition
Physical Therapy ARTICLE BY CULLMAN CITY LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRADITION PHYSICAL THERAPYTradition Physical Therapy is Cullman’s newest physical therapy clinic, founded by Roger Gurley, PT, DPT.
Gurley attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham, graduating with a bachelor of science in psychology in 2003. He went on to earn his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in 2006.
Gurley said he became interested in physical therapy after injuring his ankle while playing basketball in high school and experienced, firsthand, how important physical therapy is for
any type of rehabilitation after an injury. Being involved with returning athletes to their sports as well as patients back to independence, is his passion.
He utilizes manual therapy techniques, functional exercises, Kinesio taping, dry needling, blood flow restriction and therapeutic activities in order to restore patients back to optimal function.
But of course, his No. 1 job is being a dad to his daughter Carsyn.
In his spare time, he said, he enjoys playing golf and cheering on Alabama athletics.
Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.

If you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.

When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book.
