Sunshine, smiles and wagging tails!

Dear Cullman City Lifestyle readers,

Welcome to the vibrant month of August, a time when the days are long, the sun is shining and families are getting ready for the new school year. We are delighted to present this special issue dedicated to celebrating the kids - and pets! - in our charming Southern city.

This month, we have a medley of heartwarming stories and exciting features that capture the essence of childhood and the unconditional love of our furry friends. Our fashion feature showcases the latest trends at Werner’s Trading Co. - a stunning array of outfits that blend comfort, creativity and Southern charm.

In our pet rescue article, we shine a spotlight on the heroes among us who dedicate their time and love to rescuing and rehoming animals in need. Paws Up Rescue, LLC is a testament to the compassion and community spirit that make Cullman such a special place. We hope their efforts inspire you to consider adopting or supporting our local shelters.

We also had the pleasure of sitting down with a talented local photographer whose passion for capturing the playful and poignant moments of pets is nothing short of magical. Lisa Jones’ lens brings out the unique personalities of our beloved companions, and her work reminds us of the joy and laughter pets bring into our lives.

As summer reaches its peak, what better way to cool off than with a dip in the pool? Our feature on the joys of swimming pools explores the fun and benefits of water play for kids. D&S Pools is making waves - in a good way!

For those with a budding ballerina or little artist at home, we’ve delved into the world of ballet and painting classes available right here in Cullman. These classes provide not just a creative outlet, but also teach discipline, focus and the pure joy of self-expression.

We hope this issue of Cullman City Lifestyle fills your days with inspiration, joy and a deeper appreciation for the little things that make life in our community so wonderful. As always, we are grateful for your readership and the opportunity to celebrate the vibrant tapestry of our city with you.

Wishing you a delightful August filled with sunshine, smiles and wagging tails. Warmest regards,

August 2024

MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR STRAY, ABANDONED AND NEGLECTED DOGS

Sweet Henry's adoption is pending and we are so happy to hear it!

Renowned primatologist and anthropologist

Dr. Jane Goodall famously said, “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

The wonderful women behind Paws Up Rescue are making an astounding difference in the lives of the animals they rescue – and the families who adopt them.

Paws Up is a local, nonprofit, foster-based organization.

“We officially started in April 2023 and, to date, have rescued, rehabilitated and adopted out 95 dogs. We

are driven by an insatiable desire to save those most vulnerable by thinking outside the box and using all the resources available to us in every situation,” said Co-Founder Brandie Johnson. “We do not walk away from those requiring critical care. We take the old ones, the littles and everything in between. One of our goals is to motivate local organizations and veterinary service providers to engage with us in providing community outreach services. Change is not possible without the support and participation of the community.”

Johnson and Co-Founder Jessica Logan handle the day-to-day operations of Paws Up, and Michelle Miller works in administration.

Said Johnson, “The three of us have regular jobs and families, including our personal dogs that we take care of in addition to rescue.”

When asked why adoption and rescue are so important, Johnson said, “Rescues and shelters are bursting at the seams. Adopting from a rescue like ours gives us the ability to take on another dog; everyone has space limitations. By adopting you reduce demand for pets from commercial breeders or puppy mills. In Alabama, breeders are not regulated or held to any standard, which often results in a lack of quality and operating in poor conditions. Paws Up Rescue believes in promoting responsible pet ownership. We provide education and

support to adopters post-adoption, ensuring pets receive proper care, training and nutrition. Adopted pets often receive thorough medical evaluations and behavioral assessments, making it more likely they’ll fit well into a new home.”

She continued, “Pets provide companionship and can enhance emotional well-being. Adopting a pet can bring immense joy and fulfillment to both the animal and the adopter. Paws Up Rescue believes in quality, not quantity, supporting ethical practices that prioritize animal welfare and promoting a more compassionate society.”

As for the positive impacts pet ownership can have on kids and families, Johnson said, “Pet ownership can enrich the lives of children and families by

providing emotional support, teaching responsibility, promoting physical activity and fostering deeper bonds within the household. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship that often leads to lasting positive memories and experiences.”

With the success of Paws Up, readers might be surprised to learn just how lean the nonprofit team is.

“With a handful of dedicated volunteers, at the end of the day, we are just three people who keep the rescue up and running and functioning,” Johnson shared. “We operate solely on donations. We have zero paid staff including the three active members.”

'The most fulfilling work'

Local photographer Lisa Jones is known for her artistic touch and passion for professional portraits and headshots –and her heart for capturing the personalities of local rescue dogs.

“I was 52 when I decided I wanted to pursue photography as a business,” said Jones. “With phone companies having made it their business to make everyone a photographer, I knew I didn’t want to just be a photographer – I wanted to be an artist.”

Jones’ first goal was to achieve certification. To learn the technical aspects of photography, she studied for a year, while practicing her skills and building a portfolio.

“After achieving my certification from Professional Photographers of America, I achieved two Masters Accreditations from PPA and Portrait Masters,” she said.

Jones said that within the industry, she is known as a high school senior portrait photographer.

“When I first started working with high school seniors and teens, I knew I didn’t want to offer what every other senior photographer offered,” she said. “I was drawn to low key portraiture and loved the moodiness that often accompanies that style of portrait work. I also loved the timeless look of studio portraits and decided that would be my concentration. I knew the only way I would find success was to offer something different and unique.”

She continued, “Fast forward to 2020. I don’t need to remind anyone about the year the world came to a screeching halt! While headshots have always been part of my business, suddenly they became the bulk of my business as companies turned to online meetings and everyone realized the importance of having a professional headshot. I now do several hundred headshots a year – for businesses, corporations, pageants, actors and models.”

While headshots and portraits have been the mainstay of her business, Jones said her passion has always been fine art portraits.

“I love every aspect of the process, from planning, creation, retouching to printing and framing the finished work of art. I love to plan and create these works for myself as a creative outlet,” she said. “Headshot sessions have given me the opportunity to meet and connect with so many amazing people. My clients are absolutely wonderful and I value each and every one. However, headshot sessions don’t necessarily feed my creative soul.”

Jones said she’s always loved animals and is excited when a portrait client asks to include their pet, typically their dog.

“I’ve had a couple of cats, horses, cows and even a ball python, but for the most part the pet requests have been for dogs. I love having dogs in my studio and decided I wanted to focus more attention on studio pet portraits,” she said.

Jones has a special connection with local, nonprofit, foster-based organization Paws Up.

“Having attended a photography conference last year on pet photography, I listened to almost every speaker talk about how they worked with rescues and how much difference professional portraits were making in helping find forever homes for rescued pets. I reached out to Paws Up and asked if they would be interested in having me take portraits of their rescues, knowing this would give me the opportunity to practice this genre of photography while at the same time hopefully making an impact for their rescues. They responded immediately with a YES!”

Jones said working with rescues isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it.

“Working with rescues has been the most fulfilling work that I have done to date. My reward has been lots of hugs and kisses from the dogs, along with watching so many of them find homes once their portraits are shared online. I have to believe God created dogs as a way to demonstrate His unconditional love for us. In the words of Charlie Brown, ‘Happiness is a warm puppy...or two or three’ (I now have four).”

www.ljonesphotography.com

“Some dogs have been severely traumatized, others come in with completely broken spirits because they don’t understand why their owner has abandoned them. When a dog enters my studio my goal is to build a sense of trust. I want them to feel safe, protected and loved. I let them explore. I get down on their level and offer treats. I introduce them to the camera and flashing light,” she said. “With the help of Paws Up and an occasional volunteer, I’ve managed to get a portrait of every rescue they’ve brought to me. I work to capture their personality. Sometimes that is one of sadness and heartbreak, but every portrait helps tell their story and hopefully find their forever person.”

Dance!

A PASSION FOR BALLET AND THE ARTS

Brooke Desnoes and one of her students Brooke smiling with her dance students

Cullman might be small, but it is mighty when it comes to studios and academies for budding dancers and artists. One is the Brooke Desnoes Ballet Academy, which opened in 2020, along with Ballet South, its pre-professional dance company.

The creative mind behind both is Brooke Desnoes, who founded and directed L’Academie Americaine de Danse de Paris – which became the largest dance school in Europe.

“By the time I returned home to take care of my ailing father, I had 900 students from beginners to pre-professional level, a great team of accomplished teachers, pianists and music instructors. Some of the greatest dancers such as Violette Verdy, Gailene Stock, Amanda McKerrow, Suki Schorer and others were regular visiting guest teachers. After 25 years in France, my next challenge was to bring a smaller version of what I  offered with great success in Paris to my hometown,” said Desnoes. “In France, I implemented a thriving pre-professional program which trained a great number of students who are now dancing professionally. Many of them also received scholarships to attend university. The Paris pre-professional students performed all over Europe and participated in festivals and competitions – I have these same goals for students of Cullman.”

Brooke Desnoes Ballet Academy and Ballet South have been growing steadily and this month will move their studio to the Cotton Creek complex, where classes will begin Aug. 19.

“The new studio is large and equipped with professional sprung flooring to ensure healthy dance training. It will offer multiple bathrooms, a comfortable waiting room and private changing rooms,” Desnoes shared.

Students can begin learning ballet with Desnoes as young as age 3, with pre-ballet and ballet combination

classes. Students 9 and older can take classes in ballet, pointe, variations, jazz and hip hop. There are also age-appropriate contemporary dance, musical theatre movement and choreography classes.

Desnoes’ passion for ballet and the arts certainly impacts her students.

“I danced professionally in Europe and the United States. In the course of my training and career as a dancer and an instructor I was truly blessed to train and be mentored by some outstanding dancers. At an early age I had the great privilege of being taken under the wing of Dame Sonia Arova, which led me to a career in Europe under the direction of Alexander Bennett. The list of mentors I have had in the course of my career is very long and I will only mention Mary Day from the Washington School of Ballet who helped me develop my skill as an instructor and later, Violette Verdy, who actually became a close friend and the artistic advisor of my school in Paris,” she said.

“I have worked as a professional dancer, instructor, choreographer and artistic director for over three decades and, as you can imagine, I am very passionate about ballet and the quality of dance education! I am a strong believer that the arts play a major role in the development of our children, even if they do not become artists themselves. The arts are a mind opener that help children mature physically, emotionally, socially and cognitively. The arts help our children become resourceful, open-minded and resilient individuals. True artists are also strong leaders.”

Ballet South will partner again this November with Allegro Dance Theatre, Wallace State’s dance company, to produce another stunning “Nutcracker.” Tickets will be available at brookedesnoes.org or ballet-south.org Oct. 1.

"Dance plays a very positive role in the development of young children, young adults and without a doubt contributes to the well-being of adults, too." Brooke Desnoes

summer with a backyardpool

Dive into late summer

Benefits of a backyard pool

August means longer days, blazing hot sunshine - and splashing in the pool.

A swimming pool isn’t just a luxury; it’s a hub of excitement and enjoyment for everyone in the family, including kids and pets. Imagine the laughter of children as they splash and play in the cool water, their imaginations running wild with pool games and aquatic adventures. Pools are a fantastic way for kids to stay active, improve their swimming skills and make the most of their summer break. From diving competitions to floating on inflatables, the fun never stops.

But it’s not just kids who benefit from a pool. Pets, especially dogs, can enjoy the refreshing escape a pool provides. Many dogs love to swim, and it’s a great way for them to exercise and cool off on hot days. Watching your furry friend paddle around is sure to bring a smile to your face and make every moment spent poolside more enjoyable.

For adults, a pool provides a serene retreat from the hustle and bustle of

daily life. Whether you’re lounging with a good book, hosting a lively pool party or simply enjoying a quiet evening swim under the stars, a pool offers countless ways to relax and unwind. It’s also a perfect setting for social gatherings, where friends and family can come together to celebrate special occasions or just enjoy each other’s company.

A good pool builder understands that every family is unique, and so are their needs and preferences. They should offer a range of pool designs and features to suit any backyard and lifestyle. From elegant and tranquil designs to fun and functional setups, they should work closely with you to create the perfect pool that meets your vision.

One of our favorite local businesses, D&S Pools + Outdoor Living, specializes in turning your backyard into a personal oasis, perfect for family fun, relaxation and unforgettable memories. Check them out at www.facebook.com/DnSPools

Unleash your inner artist

From kids to adults to colleagues, painting is fun for everyone!

Looking for a fun way to spend an evening with friends? A different activity for a corporate event?

At Sips n Strokes Cullman, there’s no need for an artistic background. “You can create your own art by following easily understood, step-by-step guidance from one of our amazing instructors!” Owner Emily Bussman smiled.

Take a class on-site or have them come to your office for a fun team-building function.

“Our favorite way to interact in our community, though, is fundraisers,” said Bussman. “We love to help host events, gather friends and family, get creative and make lasting memories.”

Bussman also has a heart for kids,  sharing, “Painting allows children to explore their creativity in so many ways — expressing their thoughts and emotions and solving problems creatively!”

Back-to-school shopping spotlight

It’s that time of year! Back-to-school shopping! While I don’t pretend to be versed in all the latest fashion trends for today’s teens, I do know a little. Hey, my kids are only 20 and 21!

If you’re in or around Cullman and outfitting your teens (or preteens or older kids, even littles!) for fall, a great local option is Werner’s Trading Company on the west side of town. It has everything - for everyone in your family! If you’re feeling saucy, throw in something for your significant other or spouse, or even your dog. Werner’s has you covered!

A Cullman favorite since 1952, Werner’s has been owned by Britt and Laura Wood since 2022, and the couple has maintained the spirit of the local staple while also adding their own flair.

“Werner’s is our go-to spot for our family’s back-to-school shopping,” said Cullman City Lifestyle Publisher Missy Gurley. “They have clothing and shoes for kids, teens,

“Whether you have younger kiddos heading back to class, middle or high schoolers focused on back-to-school basics or fashion, Werner’s should definitely be on your list,” continued Gurley. “I have a teen son and 19-year-old twin daughters who love shopping, and Werner’s has never let me down when it comes to finding things all three of them like - and will actually wear! Community education

Have you visited the North Alabama Agriplex?

The North Alabama Agriplex was “planted” on Cullman’s west side almost 25 years ago. It was built to showcase the importance of agriculture to future generations and educate and create awareness of agriculture in Alabama.

The Agriplex offers multiple classes every week. It also hosts special events; it has welcomed the celebrated Gee’s Bend Quilters and “The Southern Herbalist” Darryl Patton, just to name a few Now, it’s raising funds for a campus expansion, with a focus on the new Community Hub, a 8,525-square-foot facility.

Whether your pup has the obedience of a dog show finalist, or social behavior that makes you want to play dead around others, you can develop more owner confidence with help from this expert trainer.

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”

Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “That, in turn, fosters an environment where the next time a family hosts Thanksgiving or has friends over, the owner and their dogs fall into the habit of obeying commands because of the confidence built through all the work put in beforehand.”

Even dogs with a troubled history can achieve improvement.

“We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.

• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it , but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.

• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.

DOG

SOCIALIZING TIPS:

• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.

• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.

Once your dog is able to socialize with other pets, playdates are a great way to encourage good play behavior. One way to celebrate your pup’s birthday is to celebrate with their favorite furry friends. Here are a few helpful tips for making your gathering a success.

• Set up play areas for your furry guests to enjoy. This can include a doggy pool or splash pad, chew toys, frisbees, and don’t forget the pet-friendly bubbles.

• Offer party guests birthday attire such as a birthday hat, bandana or party outfit. Set up a photo wall for pet owners to get photos with their furry friends in their birthday outfits. Better yet, make it a costume competition, and invite guests to come dressed up ready to show off their pup’s attire.

• Create a treat display with a pet-friendly birthday cake and various chewy snacks for guests to give their pups.

• Party favors are a must to end your festivities with a bang. Fill party bags with bouncy balls, treats, and pet-friendly bubbles to send your guests off with a smile.
