It was 1st grade Kite Day and for those of us who remember Kite Days, I don’t have to tell you the excitement behind this day and what a sight it was to see kites of all colors against the big blue sky. You only hoped that your kite wasn’t one of the kamikaze ones that came down and put an eye out. I was the very shy child who had moved not too long ago to the ‘big city’ of Huntsville from small town New Hope, Alabama after my parents divorced. It was a hard time which made days like Kite Day very looked forward to. What I didn’t know that day was that my mom, trying to make ends meet balancing a job and family had gotten stuck at work. So as all the other kids walked out and were greeted by parents, I looked and looked but saw nobody. Tears welled in my eyes as we formed a line and all the other children had a parent holding their hand and a kite by their side. We walked toward the field and I heard you call my name, “Amy Beth, Amy Beth.” There you were dad walking up with a big smile on your face with a kite in your hand. I screamed, “Daddy!” and ran up to hug you, you picked me up in your arms and squeezed me. The joy in that moment felt like sunbeams would just burst out of my body. Those tears became the biggest smile and the emotion that moment still erupts in my heart is a memory that has lasted my lifetime. Even now when I go to my daughter's school events that moment when her eyes meet mine send a surge of joy all over. It was one of the qualities I admire so much about you, you would show up for school events and special moments. It was an honor to show up for you and care for you in those last months.
In this June Men's issue we talk about men who show up - show up in life, show up in their community, show up for their family. BLACK CROW BUILDING AND ENFINGER DEVELOPMENT ARE LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOR MORE THAN JUST HOMES
For the Daltons and Enfingers, building homes is more than construction—it’s a deep-rooted family legacy of trust, craftsmanship, tradition, and community. They blend hard work with family values to create spaces where future generations will always have a home. Through collaboration and a commitment to quality, these hometown builders have laid the groundwork for their families and the families they serve to thrive. They aren’t just building beautiful houses and subdivisions, but a stronger, more connected community...one brick at a time.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GO INTO BUSINESS TOGETHER, AND HOW DID THE IDEA OF BUILDING A LEGACY COME TO LIFE?
Landon: I grew up in the residential construction world watching my father build a very detailed, high level, custom home and fell in love with the craftsmanship and the artistic skill of creating these homes with your own hands, much like a sculptor creates a masterpiece from a void form of stone. Fast forward years, and I’m in the depths of a design-build engineering and construction career where it’s strictly business and numbers, and I wanted something else in my life, something where I could use my passion and knowledge to build something for a family to create lifetime memories, something more than just numbers on a page.
Keith: My inspiration came from Landon’s vision—his dream of building high-quality homes on a larger scale.
HOW DO YOUR INDIVIDUAL STRENGTHS COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER IN THE BUSINESS, AND HOW DO YOU HANDLE DIFFERENCES IN OPINION OR STYLE?
Landon: Having my father involved in Black Crow Building Co. allows us to combine our individual strengths and experience to constantly elevate the quality of our homes and each other throughout the process. Our differences create discussions, which lead to learning and knowledge transfer, which leads to a better understanding of the problem and a better solution for the project. I typically have more of a dreamer perspective where the sky is not the limit and it’s never been done so we should try, and Keith is more logical with the process and steps to take to execute the work, so together we are able to leverage our personalities and strengths, with our disagreements and discussions, to create what we believe is truly the best product possible.
Keith: Landon brings a strong background in structural engineering and business, while I bring over four decades of hands-on building experience. Together, we’re able to approach projects in a way I couldn’t have done on my own. Landon manages the day-to-day operations, and I focus on what’s happening in the field which allows us to play to our strengths. We don’t really have many disagreements—we trust and respect each other’s expertise, and that goes a long way.
WHAT VALUES OR PRINCIPLES HAVE BEEN MOST IMPORTANT IN GUIDING YOUR WORK AND YOUR RELATIONSHIP?
Landon: Honesty and integrity are what our company was founded on and what our relationship stands on. We are going to be open, transparent, and honest with each other, every person involved in the company, and every family we have the privilege of working with. We define integrity as simply doing the right thing, doing what you say you’re going to do, and treating people right. We hold these two principles as pillars of the company as well as our business and personal relationship together.
Keith: Honesty and integrity have always been at the core of everything we do—in both business and life. We believe in treating people fairly, doing what we say we’re going to do, and building something we can be proud of.
Landon: We hold each other to a higher standard each and every day, and we are constantly trying to improve everything we do. I believe true improvement comes from making mistakes and listening to the opinions and experiences of others. At any time, anyone can have a good idea or solution to the problem, so by seeing my father and I constantly discussing, learning, and working together in all aspects of the company, it promotes a culture where everyone has valuable input, and it is always welcomed. There is no boss in this company, we all are equal members of the process with differing responsibilities, and no one is above any job, we all are responsible for taking out the trash when it needs to be taken out. Every person we have as a part of this company is invaluable and seeing my father and I work together each day with the mind set of how can we make each other better and a servants mentality of how can we make each other’s job easier, promotes a strong culture within the company where we are all looking out for each other to give the best home we can to the families that we have the opportunity to work for.
Keith: I think it creates a strong, positive atmosphere. The mutual respect and support we have for one another carries over into the company culture. I’m proud to work alongside Landon, and I’m motivated every day to contribute to the company’s success—not just for him, but for the whole crew.
OF YOUR COMPANY?
Landon: The legacy of this company must be larger than myself and my family. Black Crow Building Co. is a collection of all families associated with what we do every day, and the legacy needs to be one that includes all families involved. My goal is for this company to endure through generations where my children are working here, and our superintendents’ children are working here, and our pre-construction department has children working here. It needs to be a lasting legacy focused on our families and neighbors to better Huntsville as a whole, not just my family, but improving and serving all that are around us in the community.
Keith: To me, legacy means building something that lasts—something known for quality and commitment to customer satisfaction. I want BCBC to be a name that people trust and respect. More than anything, I hope it continues for generations. I’d love to see my grandchildren one day be a part of it, and I want them to be proud of what we’ve built.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER FAMILIES CONSIDERING GOING INTO BUSINESS TOGETHER, ESPECIALLY IN A HANDS-ON INDUSTRY LIKE CONSTRUCTION?
Landon: I’ve never viewed what we do as doing business together. My father and I have always worked alongside each other helping on weekend projects, helping others in need, working on charitable projects and this is just an extension of that. It’s never been work to us, it’s what we enjoy, working together to help others, it’s our hobby. If you are wanting to work with your family, I think it needs to be that way. If it’s about how much money can we make, and increasing our margins, I don’t think it will ever work. If your desire is to bring together common minds with common goals to benefit others, it can be wildly successful, and you shouldn’t hesitate to dive in.
Keith:If you get the chance to work with your family—take it. It has been incredibly rewarding to build something together and see the results at the end of each project. I feel truly blessed to be where I am today.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GO INTO BUSINESS TOGETHER, AND HOW DID THE IDEA OF BUILDING A LEGACY COME TO LIFE?
As a dad you want to teach your children to be successful however they want to be successful, and in some cases they choose to move and do their own specialty...but in our case my children have chosen to stay and work in real estate which gives me an opportunity to work with them and mentor them in these businesses.
HOW DO YOUR INDIVIDUAL STRENGTHS COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER IN THE BUSINESS, AND HOW DO YOU HANDLE DIFFERENCES IN OPINION OR STYLE?
They’re younger and they have more energy than me...each person is different and we all have strengths and weaknesses. The key to getting along is knowing that everyone is working as hard as they can.. It’s not ever a matter of trusting each other with money but just trusting that everyone is doing their best and working hard. When we have disagreements we wait a week and have another meeting. Let each other think about what we’ve heard or consider any new information. We rarely do anything without full consensus. We have a cooperative, collaborative relationship and this is how we all learn and succeed together.
WHAT VALUES OR PRINCIPLES HAVE BEEN MOST IMPORTANT IN GUIDING YOUR WORK AND YOUR RELATIONSHIP?
Work ethic. This is a competitive world and you have to be willing to compete and take chances. You have to work hard and smart to build confidence in each other and the business.
HOW HAS THE FAMILY DYNAMIC SHAPED THE CULTURE OF YOUR COMPANY AND THE WAY YOU SERVE CLIENTS?
Fairness.. You can’t give everybody everything they want but you have to fulfill your obligations. Always do what we say we are going to do. If people put a question mark behind your name then they don’t trust you.. we make every effort to fulfill every obligation both written and verbal so people trust us personally and professionally.
WHAT DOES LEGACY MEAN TO YOU, AND HOW ARE YOU INTENTIONALLY BUILDING IT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS?
Legacy to me is that all of the family members and children prosper. We spend a lot of time trying to keep children on the right path, even if that path isn’t the
same as ours. In my case I’m lucky that all my children work with me but the legacy is that we have a strong happy family that prospers in the world.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER FAMILIES CONSIDERING GOING INTO BUSINESS TOGETHER, ESPECIALLY IN A HANDS-ON INDUSTRY LIKE CONSTRUCTION?
Have common goals and spend time together deciding what the main goal is. Pinpoint everyone’s role and decide how hard everybody is going to work to make sure the goal is reached. If you lose faith in anyone on the team then you have a breakdown, so always talk it out and try to resolve reservations before it gets to that. Everyone has to work toward the goal. We’re all committed to having a business that is successful and puts out a good product.

part from the pack of traditional menswear. His love for music also plays a integral part in his creative process. This love for music also founded the Shindig Festival, a weekend of music, food and culture in Florence in which people travel from allover the country to experience and one that should be on your bucket list.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALABAMA?
My wife is from the Shoals. My business was based in New York and I had a runway show during New York Fashion Week that was on September 10, 2001, the day before the 9/11 attacks. Everything began to fall apart after that and we moved to Alabama to restart our life.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DESIGN CLOTHES?
I couldn’t find things the way I wanted them and decided to start my own collection.
WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION?
Everywhere and anywhere.
WHAT FABRIC DO YOU MOST LOVE WORKING WITH? PATTERNS?
I love developing our textiles and artworks into fabrics, which gives us our own fabrics that no one else will have in their collection.
WHY DO YOU LOVE ALABAMA? THE SOUTH?
I’m from here, it is home.
WHAT LEGACY DO YOU HOPE TO LEAVE ON SOUTHERN FASHION? ON THE FASHION WORLD IN GENERAL?
I don’t think about legacy - I just want folks to love the pieces they get from us. I’ve really never considered what we do as Southern Fashion necessarily, I want the clothes to be worn wherever you may be. Fashion is not regional anymore, in my opinion.
HOW DOES MUSIC INSPIRE YOU?
Music is a constant for me and really just part of life. It sets the tempo and builds a backdrop for the collection.
WHO HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MUSICIANS TO STYLE?
I love working with up and coming musicians we believe in and seeing them grow into their dreams. It’s cool to be a part of the process.
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER?
My favorites moments are seeing someone wearing the clothes, or hearing a story from a customer that we made their favorite piece.
“Learn! Know that even if you’re working in the stock room, you’re learning. It is an industry that never stops teaching. Have a great work ethic and attitude and that usually wins.”
HOW DID SHINDIG BECOME A PASSION AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT HOSTING THIS WEEKEND OF MUSIC?
Shindig began as way to bring influential people to the shoals, pour on the hospitality and have them spread the word through their media outlets. It’s always been about our community and how we can be a part of something bigger. That part of Shindig is still what drives us to keep it going.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO BEGIN WHEN IT COMES TO BUILDING A WARDROBE?
Get good things that fit you well and that you feel comfortable wearing. Seek versatility and pieces that can live with you.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR BRAND IN ALABAMA OUTSIDE OF FLORENCE?
We have 18 of our own shops around the country and our website is open 24/7 365 days a year.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATION INTERESTED IN GOING INTO FASHION?
Learn! Know that even if you’re working in the stock room, you’re learning. My early years working for Saks Fifth Avenue is still foundational to what I do today. It is an industry that never stops teaching. Have a great work ethic and attitude and that usually wins.

Canopies of towering palms, locks of Spanish moss hanging from branches, thick palmetto brush blanketing the ground, sawgrass in shades of gold and green cutting through the marsh, you have entered the other worldly landscape of South Carolina’s low country. The sight itself is reason alone to travel to South Carolina’s coastline. The transgression of the sea over centuries of tides, storms, and erosion, paints a boundless horizon of jungle-like swamps, sawgrass laden marsh, and untamed ocean shore.
As you fall in love with its landscape, you will also discover many other reasons to love Kiawah - award winning golf courses, beach, spa, kayaking, boating, fishing, dining, kid’s camps, and more. So park your car, hop on your bike, and get ready to explore this low country paradise designed to give every member of your family a choose your own adventure experience.
Kiawah is a mostly private, beautiful barrier island along the South Carolina shore, about 25 miles south of Charleston. It is often included on lists of the world’s most beautiful beaches. With 10 miles of pristine beaches, Kiawah is the perfect retreat to clear your itinerary and spend the day at the beach exploring, splashing, reading or simply relaxing. My favorite way to wake up every morning is a sunrise walk along the shore. The countless marine treasures that await discovery and the lapping of the waves against the sun speckled shore is a way to ease into the day, clear minded and awe struck.
Another wonderful advantage to Kiawah’s beaches, at low tide you can bike from end-to-end because the sand is so hard and packed. One of the many unique adventures to be had on these Atlantic shores.
Golf is perhaps the biggest reason to visit Kiawah with the biggest names in the sport making their mark on its championship courses. Kiawah has hosted the Ryder Cup, PGA Championship and other top-level tournaments. Year-after-year, the most respected experts place Kiawah courses at the top of every list.
The most famous of these courses, is the The Ocean Course. Located on the eastern-most end of the island, The Ocean Course boasts the most seaside holes in the Northern Hemisphere with ten hugging the Atlantic and the other eight running parallel to those. Although it was originally planned to sit behind the dunes, designer Pete Dye’s wife, Alice, suggested raising the entire course to give players unobstructed views of Kiawah’s stunning coastline from every hole. One catch? This improved view made the course substantially more demanding as it also exposed play to the Atlantic’s brisk and unpredictable breezes. Interesting fact: Because there are no prevailing winds on The Ocean Course, Dye designed two courses in one—one for an easterly and the other for a westerly wind.
Other courses include: Gary Player’s Cougar Point with its short and long par-4s, great risk/reward 5s and extremely scenic and challenging par-3s; Tom Fazio’s Osprey Point still delivers on its playability and natural beauty and gets rave reviews for its pristine conditions and elegant clubhouse; Jack Nicklaus’

Turtle Point traverses a diverse landscape with holes dictating alternating setups from left-to-right and vice-versa; and Clyde Johnston’s Oak Point, the proud recipient of the 2019 Charleston Golf Course Owners Association Course of the Year.
Any outdoor enthusiast who visits Kiawah will find a new adventure every day. From kayaking to paddle boarding to boating to fishing to cycling to natural walks, there is no shortage of activities to satisfy your inner explorer. The first thing our family did was park the car for the week and hop on our bikes. It is the best way to get around the island with trails connecting every nook and crevasse. It is convenient and who doesn’t want to feel the breeze in your hair and the childlike freedom being on 2 wheels brings.

Explore the salt marsh by kayak or boat and enjoy a visit from the friendly dolphin family that resides in the waters. Many people make their way to the point of the island to see the dolphins where they are known to gather every afternoon as the sun begins its descent to the horizon. A day on the water fishing is an option as well.
One of the most alluring things about Kiawah, the long list of activities for children. From the Night Heron Pool and Park where families can spend the whole day to kid’s camp activities like tie-dye shirt making, stained glass art, painting, and so many more classes and crafts to sign up for that the kids will love. There are also nature shows with raptors and reptiles. Those little minds have plenty of fun and adventure to choose from.
There is no shortage of accommodations as well. Leading the lodging list is The Sanctuary, named by Conde Nast Traveler as the #1 Resort in the South in 2024. The Sanctuary is beautifully designed and decorated combining traditional luxury with relaxing home-like atmosphere. Here you will also find The Spa at The Sanctuary, a haven of relaxation and wellness.
“This improved view made the course substantially more demanding as it also exposed play to the Atlantic’s brisk and unpredictable breezes.”
With 255 guest rooms, The Sanctuary sits perched on the ocean like a beacon of opulence and respite by the sea. The Sanctuary pool serves food and drinks and inside you will find an ice cream shop, Beaches and Cream, as well as the award winning Jasmine Porch restaurant.
If you would rather have your own place, Kiawah offers condos by the sea, villas, and homes many of which are pet friendly. Full of all the amenities of home, this is great way to spend time with extended family or friends.
As the premier steakhouse on Kiawah Island, The Ocean Room serves masterful dishes crafted from locally sourced beef, poultry and produce in a seasonally changing menu. This elegant restaurant overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is Forbes Five-Star rated, so you’re ensured an unparalleled dining experience.
Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s signature seafood restaurant, The Atlantic Room at The Ocean Course, serves modern American cuisine with an emphasis on fresh regional catches procured through partnerships with local fishermen.
Your home for genuine Lowcountry cuisine at breakfast, lunch, brunch or dinner, Jasmine Porch has been named “Best Downhome Cookery” by the prestigious Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report. Seasonal menus are inspired by the seafood pulled directly from the local waters and certified organic produce from around the region.
Whether you’re gathering your foursome for a postround drink, grabbing a casual lunch with family on the veranda, or toasting the sunset over the ocean, the Ryder Cup Bar is your perfect gathering place.
Tomasso at Turtle Point is Kiawah’s Italian Gathering Place showcasing old-world cuisine elevated with a contemporary influence of the Lowcountry’s fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Choose from Chef’s hand-made pastas, sauces, and breads—all prepared daily—and complemented by an inspired wine list featuring everything from crisp Pinot Grigios to full-bodied Barolos. Then finish off your meal with a decadent dessert and a glass of house-made Limoncello.
Proud to be a stop on the South Carolina BBQ Trail in the state that invented the slow-and-low cooking method, Cherrywood BBQ & Ale House serves up top-quality meats smoked over local hardwoods, rubbed with signature seasonings and dripping with tangy, house-made sauces.
Located in the heart of Night Heron Park, The Nest Market | Café offers fresh-baked goods prepared on site, specialty coffees, gourmet made-to-order sandwiches, a selection of groceries, including beer and wine, and a wide selection of retail items. On-site dining is also available indoors or on the sprawling, oakshaded porch. Enjoy comfort foods in a casual atmosphere.
For a truly unique experience, Mingo Point Oyster Roast and BBQ is Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s longest-running event, a treasured family favorite and a genuine Lowcountry tradition offered over most major holidays and every Monday evening all summer long. Guests of all ages enjoy feasting on fresh oysters roasted over an open fire, along with other BBQ specialties such as ribs, pulled pork, smoked chicken, Lowcountry Boil and more. Plus family fun, live music and more activities. Best of all is Mingo Point’s natural setting—right on the banks of the Kiawah River.
Kiawah is calling, with all picturesque landscape, its award winning golf courses, its delicious local fare, its comfortable accommodations, and its endless adventure.

• Consider if you need to make adjustments to life, disability, umbrella, home or auto coverage.
• Assess your savings and retirement contributions to ensure you are on track to meet your goals for the year.

Grilling glove inventor Derek Simpson shares must haves for a flavorful summer
Derek Simpson is a jack of all trades. Lawyer, sports agent, and grilling aficionado turned co-creator of ‘Grillaz’ gloves. He is a Huntsville native who spends long summer weekends at his lake house, where the warm days and cool evenings bid lots of time spent outdoors. “Just over fifteen years ago, my interest in grilling burgers expanded to experimentation with smoking and cooking over open flames,” Derek explains.
“My exploration of the culinary prospects of searing a steak over high heat or tending the slow, indirect heat required for a pork shoulder has steered me toward extraordinary flavors and exceptionally tender meat. My ventures have been met with well-appreciated approval, and sometimes silence that follows a grilling fail,” he laughs.
While he still considers himself a novice, he has found a few methods and accessories that have improved his grilling game and he shared them with us in hopes of helping you elevate your grill game this summer, too!

For Grilling and smoking, I love the Yoder YS480S, Pellet Grill -it’s built to last. A true workhorse of a grill. It has versatile cooking capabilities and offers a wide temperature range, allowing you to smoke low and slow or sear at a high heat.
Call me old-fashioned, but I recommend the Big Green Egg. I have cooked with one for years and have been a massive fan of its adaptability, quality, and durability. Several years ago, I was fortunate to attend Steven Raichlen’s BBQ University at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I had never seen so many high-end grills in one place. While at the University, the Broadmoor received a Wagyu A5 Beef Brisket that Mr. Raichlen would cook. He could have used any grill or smoker for this rare, pricey piece of meat, but he chose a wellused, well-seasoned Big Green Egg. That’s a pretty solid recommendation. The brisket was cooked perfectly and was delicious.
I get the most compliments on anything I cook when I use the Pit Barrel Cooker, a drum-style cooker that hangs the meat on stainless steel rods over a charcoal fire. I load it and walk away – there’s not even a temperature gauge. The chicken and ribs always turn out perfect.
Another accessory I love is the Drip EZ Prep Tub. It has a built-in basin and high walls, so all of your seasoning, marinades, and juices stay inside the tub. It also has a locking lid to transport it from the kitchen to the grill without spilling.
The Drip EZ BBQ Blanket, an insulated “meat resting” bag, is engineered to slow the temperature drop and prevents brisket, pork butt, or turkey from drying out during the crucial rest phase.
If you’re serious about precision cooking, whether grilling or smoking, I recommend the Fireboard 2 meat thermometer. It is incredibly accurate and has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Cloud Monitoring. The Fireboard App is user-friendly and allows you to monitor your cook while away from home.
The best new accessory for grilling is the Grillaz gloves, which Jon Houser and I created. I have purchased countless grilling gloves and finally decided to design my own. Grillaz are FDA-compliant silicone-coated neoprene gloves that allow you to handle food directly and move items cooked on the grill without any other tools. You can now use your hands to grill! Another awesome feature is the easy pull tab on the back of the glove, so you can remove a glove without getting your clean hand messy.
Whether grilling or smoking, I have never had a bad day when it involves cooking over an open fire or watching clean smoke rise high from a smoker. I wish everyone a wonderful grilling season.
For over three decades, architect Jim Norton has shaped Huntsville’s landscape with nearly 1,000 projects blending creativity and craftsmanship. From custom homes to commercial spaces, his designs reflect a deep connection to the community and a passion for timeless architecture. Dive into the world of design as we learn more about his background and expertise.
WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN ARCHITECTURE BEGIN?
As a young boy I liked to draw trains on sheets of paper and then tape them all together, and I enjoyed building cities for my hot wheels. My parents recognized this and always said I should be an artist or an architect. Looking back that was when I realized there was a feeling of satisfaction in creating and organizing things.
WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?
I would say my inspiration mostly comes from styles of the past. The Prairie Style, Craftsman Style, Art Moderne and The International Style all strived to change the way we lived and worked. Each of these offer a wealth of avenues to pursue. Each embraced color which is lacking in today’s grey and brown architecture. I like color.
FAVORITE ERA OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN?
I like the designs of the 1950s and 1960s. This was an exciting time for architecture and design in general. Suburbia had come into its own and shed the traditional home styles for more modern and rethought ways of living.
ARTICLE BY CASEY CREQUE
The Brady Bunch house is a great example. Icons like Hollywood’s Capitol Records Building, New York’s Pan Am Building and The Fransworth House steered architecture in a new direction.
IT’S THERE A PROJECT THAT YOU’VE WORKED ON THAT STICKS OUT AS THE MOST INTERESTING OR CHALLENGING?
I designed a house once that included a network of secret passageways, an underground tunnel from the main house to the pool house, a walk in china cabinet and hallways wide enough for golf carts. That was an interesting design that I enjoyed creating.
WHAT DO YOU SEE FOR THE FUTURE TRENDS OF ARCHITECTURE?
Architecture is like fashion..ever evolving. When I graduated architecture school we were trained in Post Modernism. This was a bold and playful style of architecture perfect for the 1980s. I like to point out the design of fast food buildings. What once possessed an inviting and festive hut-like imagery has changed into a sterile, impersonal place that tends to bore the imagination. Now, we have evolved into a simplified movement which encourages lines and shapes arranged into a building. My hope is the next trend in architecture will depart from the simple massing of buildings and return to the detail and complexity of years prior.

Since I was 17 years old, I always felt a calling toward ministry. Typically, I shied away from diving into ministries for a variety of poor reasons. Seeing so many that were in ministry for what I perceived as vanity and attracted to attention, I wanted to steer clear of the bad fruit I saw. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to see the good fruit around me until later in my adult life. My vocational life took a turn from corporate finance to banker after my parents were involved in a terrible accident while traveling back from a domestic mission trip in the summer of 2002. My dad became a quadriplegic, so a lot of our focus was on helping and supporting Dad’s care, and I struggled to find the peace in my walk in the Lord and in my business life.
That all changed in 2010 when my close friend, Sr Pastor, Keith Langner, invited me to join him and our Worship Pastor, Matt Evans on a trip to India. That trip made my life’s purpose super clear. After serving, training pastors, seeing firsthand the abject poverty unknown to us in the western world, and experiencing the unchanging power of the Gospel in places like Southeast Asia – I knew I was made to be part of such work as a missionary.
Subsequent years and subsequent trips to Southeast Asia continued to fuel my desire in this, while back home I stayed the course in my banking profession. In 2019, I made a
decision to leave the bank to start Redmond Lending Group. I had no plan to grow RLG into an expanding company, but was seeking flexibility and freedom in my pursuit of this call to ministry, while still providing for my family. Along the way, I contacted my friend and missionary who worked in India about making RLG more than just a mortgage company. My question: “How can we support global missions with what we’re doing as mortgage specialists?” From there a connection was made with Training 2 Send, who continued the work from Southeast Asia into northern countries in Africa.
CONTINUED >
In 2023 we started to set aside capital from every loan we closed – earmarked for missions. I am just as passionate about local needs as I am about global needs. Further, I wanted our company’s culture to be manifestly invested in this cause, not just my missional connections, but any and every employee’s. If one of our employees have a particular passion in mission work, we’re
“LAST YEAR, WE WERE ABLE TO HELP ONE OF OUR LOAN OFFICER’S CHURCHES MAKE A TRIP TO HONDURAS.”
seeking to support! Last year, we were able to help one of our loan officer’s churches make a trip to Honduras. We have since supported some private needs locally, along with our support in Training 2 Send, which I am personally involved with in trying to rally and network more churches, pastors and believers to become made aware of the darkness, lostness, and need in the areas we work in. So much of my time outside of RLG, is devoted to networking to more churches in helping us with this effort.
My mission is to grow Redmond Mortgage to serve our communities as a great resource for their financing and real estate needs. As a mortgage specialist and CEO, I want people to do business with us because we’re great at what we do for their needs. As the owner, I dream of how many closed transactions translates into how many lives reached in the hardest to reach areas of the world.

The capital city of Texas is best known for having a personality of its own, one bursting with foodie and fashion finds, outdoor activities and “Austintatious” art creations, a booming sphere of pro sports experiences (we see you Formula 1 and Austin FC), and seven days a week of live music to boot. Did we mention it’s sunny nearly 300 days a year? It’s time to GET AWAY!
It’s no secret that people are flocking to Austin. What’s not to love about the warm weather, vast culinary scene and the ability to recreationally paddle board through the city limits? Add to that the attractive walkability it offers, letting you fuel your explorative side amid the hustle and bustle of the downtown scene without ever needing a ride.
Sunny most days of the year, Austin is recognized for a myriad of outdoor experiences which you can experience both in downtown Austin with scenic views of the skyline, as well as the surrounding area, including local treasure, Lady Bird Lake. Kayak, hike, bike and swim your way around the great Austin outdoors and enjoy one of the city’s most fantastic offerings that inspires people to get outside and play together.
When it comes to luxury accommodations, one of the most stunning hotels in Austin is the Commodore Perry Estate . This striking and historic property, once a 10,800-square-foot private mansion known to host Jazz era social extravaganzas, has been transformed into a modern and European-influenced spectacular resort now open to the public. Enjoy the architectural details, white-glove service, in-room Austin purveyor displays, and sophisticated, Southern-style meals.
Speaking of meals, Austin is renowned for pleasing palates, with an exceptional restaurant scene, including barbecue and tacos as its true soul foods. Pair your tacos with queso and the must-have margaritas for an authentic Tex-Mex meal, or indulge in Austin’s quintessential barbecue. It all started with Franklin Barbecue, helmed by Aaron Franklin who was the first pitmaster to win a James Beard award for Best Chef, which was inducted into the American Royal Hall of Fame and was credited for ushering in a new era of food into the city. Austin’s slow-cooked, fall-off-thebone brisket is a mouth-watering experience not to miss.
Beyond barbecue and Tex-Mex is an entire mix of palate pleasers, from upscale Mediterranean and Asian to James Beard award-winning eateries. Geraldine’s inside Hotel Van Zandt is one of Austin’s iconic Rainey Street destinations. Equal parts restaurant, bar, rooftop and live music venue, Geraldine’s overlooks beautiful Lady Bird Lake and offers 4th floor cabanas, a nightly concert lineup and a chef’s contemporary menu.
Perhaps a hidden gem is Austin’s mark on the forefront of the booming food truck scene, a foundation for famed, award-winning chefs getting started before getting the funding to open their own brick and mortars. Whether you indulge in one in a gas station parking lot or parked next to a music venue, you’ll find them all over town, serving up a variety of dishes to be devoured.
But first you should start your day with a cup of joe from Jo’s Coffee. Known for its iconic “i love you so much” mural-clad exterior on South Congress Avenue, patrons come for the hot coffee, good food, cold beer and people-watching. The creative menu includes everything from its house blend to its Cowboy Cookie Cold Brew you can pair with a hash brown or local-favorite “migas” taco.
As for Austin’s retail and local maker scene, the possibilities are endless and elevated. 2ND Street District boasts a mix of boutiques and shops to get your fashion fix and new home decor. For
the gentlemen, embrace the full district experience, shopping League of Rebels , a bespoke experience with tailor made lifestyle wear, or Bonobos , the pioneers of custom fit chinos. Then enjoy a fresh shave from Austin’s premier Finley’s Barber Shop
For the women, shop local and find the perfect gift for yourself or someone you love from Luxe Apothetique, then drape yourself in artisan jewelry from Eliza Page before falling for the modern designs from Blu Dot.
Follow some retail therapy, head over to Upstairs Circus , a unique concept where DIY meets the bar; pick your project, enjoy a libation, create a masterpiece and be merry.
Or shop The Domain district in North Austin, a newer shopping center offering upscale hotels and fantastic restaurants. Shop luxury brands such as Saint Laurent Paris and Gucci and reward yourself with sweet and savory bites from a multitude of
eateries. Nearby is the home of the new Austin FC Major League Soccer team, so you can take in a professional soccer match as part of your metropolitan experience, cheering on the club team partially owned by Matthew McConaughy. Even if you’re not a soccer fan, the energy is incredible, and the stadium is a stunner.
Other Austin districts worth checking out include well-known South Congress Avenue . You can stroll boutiques and additional eateries and check out the uniquely converted bungalows that now offer day and nightlife entertainment destinations.
While East Austin is a larger neighborhood, the depth of culture here is noteworthy. Six Square is Austin’s premier Black Cultural District near the beautiful grounds of the Texas State Cemetery. And, as one would expect, you’ll find a plethora of great restaurants such as local favorites la Barbecue and Bird Bird Biscuit that was just listed as one of Yelp’s Top 5 restaurants to eat at in America.
Now let’s talk about live music. Whatever your scene is, you’ll find it here and, well, everywhere. From your airport arrival, to the open air around you, and then hopping from neighborhood to neighborhood, Austin is filled with live music. You’ll find musicians performing at world-famous festivals, intimate clubs, coffee houses, and even the corner taqueria. With hundreds of live music venues, you have plenty of options available to soak up the sounds. ACL Live at The Moody Theater is home to the beloved Austin City Limits television show and hosts about 100 concerts year round. Tour the venue, select your show and find everything from country to rock, hip-hop, rap, jazz and blues.
With its true passion for its unparalleled live music scene, its championing of local creators and small business owners, and its celebration of its enriching arts and culture offerings, Austin avows a personality all its own and should be next on your playlist. We love it so much!

THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES ARE LIGHT, BRIGHT AND FEEL LIKE SUMMER
The sun has returned, and grilling season is upon us. With the nice weather comes vegetable gardens and fresh produce, along with the overwhelming desire to be outside as much as possible. We’ve compiled some fresh and light dishes that you can shop for at your local farmers market and whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal or something to grill for a crowd on the weekend these dishes won’t disappoint. These pair well together or can stand on their own!
• 2lbs. Outside skirt steak*
• 2 Tablespoons lime*
• 2 Tablespoons finely, chopped cilantro
• ¼ Cup olive oil or avocado oil
• ¼ White onion, finely chopped
• 1 Tablespoon cumin
• Salt and pepper to taste
1. Place skirt steak into gallon freezer bag
2. Combine all other ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour over steak and marinate for 3-4 hours or overnight in the fridge.
3. Bring skirt steak to room temperature by letting it sit out for one hour.
4. Get your grill hot on one side and medium on the other.
5. Once the grill is ready, wipe excess marinade off steak. Starting on the hot side, place skirt steak on grill for 2 minutes per side, attaining a nice sear.
6. Transfer steak to the cooler side of grill and cook until the internal temp is 130°. Let rest for 10 minutes (temp will rise while resting).
7. Carve and serve. This dish pairs well with beans and rice or served as tacos. Following is a chimichurri sauce that compliments it nicely.
*Outside skirt steak is a more tender cut than inside skirt steak, for this recipe outside skirt is recommended. Do not use too much lime as the citrus can cook the meat before putting it on the grill, resulting in a tougher texture.
• ½ Cup parsley, finely chopped
• ½ Cup cilantro, finely chopped
• 2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar
• 3 Cloves garlic, minced
• 1 Red chili (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)
• ½ Teaspoon dried oregano
• 1 Teaspoon salt
• 1 Tablespoon lime juice (optional)
Combine all ingredients in a bowl. You can make this in the late morning and let it sit for around 4-6 hours, or you can make it the day before and let the flavors meld overnight in the fridge. Just be sure to take it out and get it to room temp before you serve it, as olive oil hardens in the fridge. Serve over skirt steak or tacos.
• 2 Ears sweet corn
• 10oz. Cherry tomatoes
• ¼ Cup lime juice
• 1 Finely chopped jalapeno or serrano (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)
• ¼ Cup cilantro, finely chopped
• ½ Cup white onion, chopped
• 2 Cloves garlic, minced
• Salt to taste
1. Grill corn, you do not need to soak the corn beforehand.
2. Place corn on the grill (inside their husks) over medium heat turning every few minutes.
3. After 10 to 12 minutes shuck the corn and put the cobs back on the grill for 2-4 minutes rotating frequently to achieve that charred look and flavor.
4. Cut the corn from the cob, place in bowl and add all other ingredients. Let the mixture meld for about an hour and serve with tortilla chips or as a taco garnish.

An inside look at Donny Maleknia’s foundations for success in business and life
ARTICLE BY CASEY CREQUE
When did you know you wanted to pursue a career in the jewelry business?
Design has always been a passion of mine, but after landing my first job in computer science, an acquaintance suggested that my personality and demeanor would be well-suited for a role in jewelry. He encouraged me to work as a jewelry salesperson and eventually hired me as a traveling jewelry salesman. Before long, I decided to quit my programming job and pursue a full-time career as an independent jewelry salesperson, with the goal of eventually owning my own jewelry store.
What keeps you going throughout the ebb and flow of owning a business?
I genuinely love my job and my customers. That passion gives me the energy to show up to work with a smile, regardless of the circumstances.
You are always so energetic and positive. Where does your energy come from?
I love music and dancing. I begin each day with music and movement. Sometimes at work I’ll dance, and I’m sure that some passersby have witnessed this. I tell everyone: if you’re feeling tired or down, put on your favorite music and start dancing. You’ll feel better in no time!
What is your favorite Jewelry trend?
I love classic designs the most. However, the most important factor in selecting jewelry is what the customer likes and feels good wearing. Each piece of jewelry becomes part of you, something your family will cherish for years to come.
What do you hope your customers take away from shopping at Donny’s?
At Donny’s Diamond Gallery, we believe that every person who enters our store is a gift from God, and we strive to treat them as such. I hope that by the time our customers leave, they will feel like part of our family, knowing they can stop by for any reason and leave with a smile on their face.
What role do you believe small business owners should play in the community?
My wife, Fatemeh, and I met here, but our childhood backgrounds in Iran taught us an important lesson: when you have a piece of bread and someone walks through your door, you must share it...even if that bread is all you have. We strive to live by this principle and have raised our children with it in mind. We strongly believe that to whom much is given, much is required. We are thankful for the success of our business, and for our loyal customers. We see it as our duty to give back to the community that has been so generous to us.
