Celebrating inspirational women and mothers

Dear readers,

Welcome to the May edition of Cullman City Lifestyle! As we transition into warmer days and blooming flowers, we are thrilled to celebrate the remarkable women who shape our lives and communities. This month, we pay tribute to the strength, resilience and boundless love of women everywhere, particularly as we honor the special occasion of Mother's Day.

In Cullman, we are fortunate to be surrounded by generations of extraordinary women who have paved the way for progress and positivity. From the matriarchs who instill timeless wisdom to the daughters who carry forth their legacies, we cherish the importance of generational women and the powerful bonds that unite us.

This May, we shine a spotlight on you, ladies! Whether it's a working mother juggling career and family with grace and determination, or a community leader making a difference one act of kindness at a time, their influence resonates far beyond the confines of our community.

Being a mother is why I was put here on Earth and I truly love being my children’s mother. I am so thankful to my mom for teaching me everything. She is the very best grandmother to my three children. We are so blessed to have her in our lives!

To all the mothers, grandmothers, sisters and friends who enrich our lives with their love and guidance, we express our deepest gratitude. Your sacrifices, your laughter and your unwavering support shape the very fabric of our city, making it a place we are proud to call home.

As we embark on this journey of celebration and reflection, let us remember to uplift and empower the women in our lives every day, not just in May. Together, we can create a brighter, more inclusive future where every woman is valued, respected and celebrated for her unique contributions.

Thank you for being a part of the Cullman City Lifestyle family. May your days be filled with love, laughter and the inspiring spirit of women everywhere.

Warmest regards,

May 2024

SELF-CARE AND TRANSFORMATION

Local duo Rebekah Taylor and Kelsey Clark, both certified family nurse practitioners and paramedical tattoo artists, own inkMED Skin Studio in Cullman. They opened their business in December 2023.

“Our business offers medical tattoo techniques that can camouflage skin irregularities, scars – whether surgical, self-harm or accidental – as well as skin conditions such as birthmarks, stretch marks or vitiligo,”

Give your body the attention it deserves

said Clark. “Medical tattooing aids in decreasing the appearance and texture of scars and stretch marks. These advanced techniques are accomplished by depositing ink or serums into the affected area.”

Being woman-owned, inkMED has a unique perspective when it comes to health care.

“It’s special because, as women, we bring an innovative solution that can

apply to anyone. Our background in health care has prepared us to care in an empathetic way for clients who have internal and external scars,” Taylor explained. “As women and mothers, we are proud to own a business to be able to teach our children hard work, honesty, independence, leadership and generosity.”

inkMED offers a wide variety of specialized services designed to help clients feel their best.

“Our treatments consist of scar neutralization, scar camouflaging and stretch mark rejuvenation. These treatments are for the client who has major scarring after surgery making them self-conscious and holding them back from full recovery; the client who has self-harm scars reminding them of

a difficult period in their life that they are ready to let go of; and the client who has stretch marks from pregnancy, weight loss or even weight gain and is self-conscious about wearing certain outfits,” said Clark.

Taylor and Clark are passionate about their work, sharing, “We stand by our mission of honest, safe and excellent work. Each client will receive a free consultation where their medical history is reviewed and

any questions or concerns are answered. We will provide the client with clear precare and after-care instructions. The procedure is similar to having a tattoo. Pain is very minimal to none. Healing on average takes about 30 days. Most clients need between two to three sessions to achieve the full desired results.”

INSURING your FUTURE

Local insurance agent Kathy Sims has been serving clients with Alfa Insurance for a decade.

I asked her if her office being run by a woman makes it special.

“I feel as a woman that I do go the extra mile for clients, as well as have empathy for clients – I’m not looking at what I will earn, but more of how I can actually help someone,” she said.

“I grew up in a small hometown business environment and know the importance of customer service,” she continued. “Personal and professional service is not an expression, but a promise I take very seriously for my customers – those who have placed their trust not only in Alfa Insurance, but in me.”

Sims said there are some things about her career that have surprised her.

“At a young age, I always looked at insurance as being one of the professions that I would never do or want to do,” she laughed. “But it is a very lucrative career, as well as fulfilling in the sense that I get to really help people.”

She also had advice for young women just beginning to think about what kinds of insurance they might need.

“Make sure that you have good coverage for your home and automobile, as well as your life,” she explained. “The younger you are when you get your life insurance set up and get associated with a good insurance company on all your insurance needs, the better you will be throughout your life.”

Sims’ office is located at 3188 Alabama Highway 157, Cullman, AL 35058. She serves the communities of Cullman, Vinemont, Holly Pond, Hanceville, West Point, Good Hope, Crane Hill and Arley with insurance products including auto, home, life, commercial, renters and health.

“My goal is to be easily accessible to all my clients and put their needs first,” she smiled.

Find Kathy Sims Alfa Insurance Agent on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ kathysimsalfa or follow her on Instagram at www.instagram. com/kathy.sims.

Sims is also a member of the Cullman Chamber Ambassador Committee, which is composed of business leaders who help members understand benefits, make connections at Chamber events and welcome new member businesses at ribbon cuttings.

Building strong communities

Get to know United Way of Cullman County

1. WHAT ARE YOUR TITLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES?

Our staff at UWCC is phenomenal. Our executive director is Stephanie Childers; she leads the charge on all activities, from campaigning, events, helping partner agencies, you name it. Resource development and outreach is led by Taylor Johnson; she is our media, outreach and fundraising extraordinaire. Trudy Weaver is new to the team! She is our office assistant and handles campaign management and financials. We are definitely a team. We are all hands on deck, helping each other in any way we can.

2. CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT UWCC DOES?

United Way brings people together to build strong communities where everyone thrives. We are unique in that we have a process of accepting nonprofits to support. To be the best stewards of our donors’ monies, we have a community lead and allocations process that includes a thorough report from applying agencies and tours to help our volunteers decide where the funds are best suited to support Cullman County. We currently support 19 partner agencies.

3. WHAT IMPACT WILL THE RECENT CRAWFISH BOIL HAVE ON PARTNER AGENCIES?

“Our Crawfish Boil, the money raised goes straight into our nonprofits,” said Childers.

“United Way brings people together to build strong communities where everyone thrives. We are unique in that we have a process of accepting nonprofits to support.”

“We have 19 in Cullman that are under our umbrella that we support, and all the money raised goes back into them to grow them, nourish them and help them be the best they can be. We do this as an outreach as well; this is our Young Professionals Board, and it is growing.”

4. WHAT MAKES EVENTS SUCCESSFUL?

Teamwork and community support! Our whole staff is incredible. We have the amazing opportunity to partner with and have sponsorship from the wonderful team at Goat Island Brewing and Hank’s Sports Bar & Rumors Deli. Everyone loves the Creole spin on the Boil, and watching them pull things together is like watching a well-oiled machine. We had a company help sponsor veggie costs, Vest Plumbing, and we had the amazing opportunity to work alongside Visual Anthony while they captured content. Our YP Board is a huge player in the success. They show out at this event. Johnson worked incredibly hard behind the scenes with marketing and coordination.

Several upcoming events have sponsorship and volunteer opportunities:

• Annual Meeting, May 30

• Book Drive, May 11-18

• Stuff The Bus, TBD

• Community Health Fair, Sept. 7

• Day of Caring, Sept. TBD

• Designer Bag Bingo, Nov. 7

THE IMPACT OF FAMILY

FAMILY CARE | LIFE + CULTURE

Jacy Hawkins is a registered nurse and with her husband, Dr. Jeremy Hawkins, owns Hawkins Medical & Wellness in Cullman.

“Our practice specializes in direct primary care and concierge medicine, granting members 24/7 access to personalized health care. With a focus on quality over quantity, we provide dedicated attention to each patient,” she said.

Being a family-owned practice is special, said Hawkins. “Our goal is relationships in everything we do. Our family’s desire is to partner with every person we can and help make them the best version of themselves. Jeremy and I love to know each family on as personal a level as we can,” she said.

“Talk about divine intervention – our family has been blessed big time, and we're on a roller coaster of joy, serving up love and support to every family that crosses our path. Think of us as the ultimate dream team, spreading good vibes and making miracles happen as we have been called to serve. God has blessed our family and we get the amazing opportunity to serve each and every family we encounter. We get to be the hands and feet of Jesus as a family on a daily basis.” Hawkins was influenced by her family’s impact.

“Being born and raised in Cullman instills a strong work ethic and culture of love and care. As a member of a family business since 2009, I’ve learned the values of responsibility, dedication and resilience,” she shared. “Growing up I learned the importance of hard work and perseverance, witnessing my parents' commitment to providing for our family while serving our community and persevering through the years. This work ethic translated into academic

success, career advancement and a desire to give back to my community. With my business, I will always carry the lessons and values imparted by my family.”

Hawkins said she strives to be honest, courageous, caring and kind. “As a nurse, my passion is to care for every single individual like it is my own dad or mom,” she said. “Jeremy and I strive to help our patients and families through their health care journeys.”

HAWKINS’ ADVICE TO WOMEN ASPIRING TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS AND LIFE:

Believe in yourself! Have confidence in your abilities and trust your instincts. Embrace your unique strengths and talents, and don't be afraid to showcase them in personal and professional pursuits.

Set clear goals: Define what success means to you and set specific, achievable goals.

Build a support system: Surround yourself with mentors, colleagues, friends and family who uplift and inspire you. Seek out role models who have achieved success in areas you aspire to and learn from their experiences.

Prioritize work-life balance: Strive to find a balance between your professional ambitions and personal well-being. Set boundaries, delegate tasks when possible and make time for

self-care, hobbies and meaningful relationships outside of work.

Embrace challenges: View obstacles and setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning. Cultivate resilience and perseverance, and don't let fear of failure hold you back.

Advocate for yourself: Speak up for what you deserve in the workplace, whether it's a promotion, equal pay or recognition for your contributions. Don't shy away from negotiating for better opportunities and advocating for your own advancement.

Support other women: Lift as you climb by supporting and empowering other women in their journeys. Foster a sense of solidarity and collaboration rather than competition, and celebrate the successes of your peers.

Lead with authenticity: Be true to yourself and lead with integrity, empathy and compassion. Cultivate a leadership style that is authentic to who you are, and strive to create inclusive and supportive environments for those around you.

Remember your values: Stay grounded in your values and principles, and let them guide your decisions and actions in both business and life. Integrity, honesty and kindness are timeless virtues that can lead to enduring success and fulfillment.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FINDING YOUR TRIBE

Power of a woman

LOCALLY SOURCED | LIFE + CULTURE
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY DR. REBEKAH LLOYD
Some of the lovely ladies of L.E.A.P.
Taken at Yongsan Garrison in Seoul, South Korea in 2008. We were part of 362d Sig Co, 41st Sig Bn, 1st Sig Bd. - Rebekah Lloyd
32
Dr. Rebekah Lloyd
"We need the generation before us to guide us along their cleared path and encourage us to continue further. We need our own generation to laugh and commiserate with, to know we're not alone in this sometimes strange world. We need the generation behind us to remind us where we started - the ground in which our roots were established - and motivate us to keep moving forward so they can pick up the torch and carry it forward."

Years ago, I found myself in the heart of Seoul, South Korea, which, at the time, was the largest city in the world – a far cry from Bremen, Alabama, a small town in Cullman County without even a single stoplight, where I was raised.

Scarier than that, though, was that I was the only woman at my worksite. In the early 2000s, women comprised less than 15% of the United States Army. As the over-achiever I am, I found myself in an even more male-dominated field –satellite communications. I am not sure what the statistics of the male-to-female ratio are today.

Still, during my nine years in the military, I only ever met two women in the same field as me, and only one of them did I manage to run into twice: once during training at Fort Gordon, Georgia (just outside Augusta) and then again at FOB Shank in the Logar Province of southeast Afghanistan three years later.

Even more difficult than being one of the few: women in the military were overly harsh on each other. By nature of the environment in which we found ourselves, we constantly competed to be better than our male counterparts to prove we even belonged in the military. A phrase I can go a lifetime without hearing again is, "Man up."

I shudder at the thought of all the times leaders would say this to us to motivate us to not be "weak like a girl" – among many terms and phrases used to disparage anyone not as strong as the one uttering the insulting phrase. So then, even more, we women service members had to compete to show "the boys club" how we were not like the women service members they often complained about – even in our presence.

To say it was an unhealthy atmosphere is an understatement.

So, imagine my surprise when I was drawn into a group of women - moreover friends, all in the

small business world. These ladies do not have a military background, yet they accept me for who I am, quirks and all! Even more, we take others. We have no competition; we have goals and ambitions to improve. Our competition lies only within ourselves as we each try to do better than we did the day before. In the year I have known them, I have grown more in my confidence and inner strength than during my entire military career, a feeling I do not share lightly.

When one of us rises, we all rise – a sentiment often used regarding women's relationship with one another, and for good reason, too. Research shows women are 22% less likely to reach the managerial level than their male counterparts, and the gap between women's and men's promotion to the C-Suite is even more concerning. Many factors have been identified to cause this grave disparity. But rather than a statistical analysis here, I think a more productive approach might be to explore what women's empowerment among us can do.

When one of us reaches the upper rungs of the proverbial ladder, not only should we make a way, forge the path or break the glass ceiling for the women behind us, but we should also reach back with both hands and lift up those attempting to follow in our footsteps. Rather than simply depending on the ocean to raise the boat, we should toss out the lifesaver to those who have not yet made it onto the ship, help those stuck on the ladder's lower rungs and pull them into the boat with us.

Believe me, having experienced a career starved for the support of other women and now a life abundant with it, women need each other.

So, if you haven't found your tribe of women to uplift you, let me know. I'll happily cheer you on from the sidelines of whatever game you find yourself playing in this thing called life.

Mother's Day Musings

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY VARIOUS SHARING MOTHER'S DAY MEMORIES

Traci Johnson Checklist Concierge Service

“My fondest memories of Mother’s Days are centered around 'Decorations' and our 'Green Family Gathering.'  For decades, we have celebrated Mother’s Day with a trip to the Center Hill Cemetery, as well as a trip to the Mountain Grove Cemetery and finally to my Granny Green’s for an amazing covered dish lunch with all of my maternal aunts, uncles and cousins. As a child, I never truly appreciated this tradition; however, as an adult, I treasure these memories and have tried to instill the same tradition into my own children.”

“Some of my favorite Mother’s Day memories include my Gran, my Mama and I going to church together on Mother’s Day wearing our big hats. I am so very thankful to have these sweet memories now that my mom is in Heaven. I sure have been blessed with the very best as well as blessed by the legacy they leave behind. I pray that I can be the same blessing to my two boys.”

Missy Gurley Cullman City Lifestyle

“Mother’s Day has always been a wonderful day, especially since I had my own children. But I cannot remember a Mother’s Day that I did not spend with my mother. From making homemade cards with my sister, Christy, to delicious lunches with family - each year is memorable.”

“Mother’s Day to me is a day to really show how much our mommas mean to us. We should show them every day, but this is especially a day to make them feel special. I am so thankful for my momma, ‘Mimi,’ as most know her. I cherish my time with her and I try to make Mother’s Day special to her every year.”

“Imagine a 5-year-old little boy and his father preparing breakfast for his mother on Mother’s Day. Just before serving the plate to his mother, he says, 'Wait a minute!' He runs to the herb garden to pick fresh mint to garnish the fruit! Or maybe two sisters making Mom special handmade cards! These are not only my memories of past Mother’s Day celebrations, but also precious acts of love that are etched in my mind! Expensive gifts can be purchased, but gifts of the heart last forever!”

Tiffany Steele D&S Pools + Outdoor Living

“My favorite Mother’s Day memory didn’t occur with my first Mother’s Day but actually my third. I had spent the past two years as a working mom and wife on night shift, in the medical field. I was blessed with the option to stay home with my 2-year-old. I felt extra thankful that day because I was able to give my family my undivided attention. My daughter and I went shopping, stopped by Frios for our favorite popsicles and ended the day playing outside with our puppy. The best part is that Dad always has to make dinner on Mother’s Day!”

Emily Bussman

“Mother’s Day takes on a whole new meaning after your own children are born. The amount of love, admiration, respect, and gratitude towards every mother, everywhere is hard to put into words. To my own mother, and all the precious mothers and mother figures you are so loved so cherished, and our incredible blessing to so many. Happy Mother’s Day to you this year and every single day”
